The Hoover and Mason Phosphate Co. made extensive tests with a rig manufactured by the Paris Manufacturing CO. as shown in Fig I. It is powered by a 20-hp Wisconsin air-cooled gasoline engine, through a single reduction gear and flexible coupling. The machine operates a 4-in. auger with a detachable cutting head, as shown in Fig I. The auger length is 3 ft 4 in. and the cutting head averages 7 in. The unit has a drilling capacity of 100 ft and can drill an average prospect hole in less than 15 min. The weight of the motor is used for the thrust feed for driving the auger and head down, aided by the spiral shape of the auger. The rate of downward motion—i.e., the feed—is regulated by a handwheel. The string of tools is withdrawn from the hole by a gear train controlled by a hand-operated clutch. IN AN ARTICLE on "Recovering Smelter Dust and Oxide," published in the Engineering and Mining Journal (Vol. 131, No. 2), the authors briefly described some dust-recovery equipment and its operation at a secondary-metals brass-smelting and refining plant. A description of our experience in overcoming certain operating difficulties may prove of interest or value to those who are confronted with some of the same problems or who should equip their furnaces with dust-collecting equipment. The dust loss from reverberatory smelting and refining of brass con¬sists largely of zinc, with smaller percentages of lead, tin, and copper in the order named. At the Kramer plant, the fume discharge from the two stacks amounted to 3 to 4 tons of solids per day, making a dense smoke. With dust equipment in operation, the discharge from the stacks is invisible and approximately 2500 lb. of zinc and other metals is recovered daily thereby from each furnace operating.

Peculiar crusts having appeared on certain irons made at Glendon and Pequest, which, in our experience, were entirely new, some analyses of them were made; and these analyses, together with an account of the manner of appearance of the crusts, are herewith submitted to the Institute. At Pequest the ores mere: & Peters, from Ringwood, N. J.; + roasted sulphurous ore, from Charlotteburgh, N. J.; and + red ore (decomposed magnetite), from Chester, N. J. The fuel was 7/8 Lehigh anthracite and + Connellsville coke, and the limestone a dolomite from Andover, N. J. The resulting iron varied in silicon from 0 84 per cent. in No. 1 foundry to 0.51 per cent. in gray forge; in phosphorus, from 0.81 per cent. to 0.55 per cent.; sulphur, 0.035 per cent.; manganese, 0.375 per cent. It was highly "chilling" in its properties, and very strong. In running, it invariably appeared to be of a lower grade than it really was; the higher grades scintillating as much as hard iron usually does. After getting into the moulds, and beginning to cool, a black crust began to show itself, seeming to exude from the pigs, till finally, when the iron was cold enough to break, it completely covered the face of the pigs. Beryl is a mineral that may be difficult to distinguish from quartz by casual field inspection. The easily recognized green color and hexagonal crystal form of coarse-grained beryl are by no means universal, even in beryl from pegmatitic deposits. If it occurred as a fine-grained accessory mineral in an igneous rock, it would almost certainly escape detection unless samples were submitted for petrographic or chemical analysis. There may be substantial deposits of some beryllium mineral, other than beryl, that has been overlooked because that mineral also closely resembles the common rock-forming minerals. A reliable and simple method of identifying beryllium minerals and determining the beryllium content of a rock would be helpful in exploration. This article describes preliminary experiments in applying nuclear reaction to the qualitative identification of beryl and to the semiquantitative determination of the beryllium content of rock samples. Gaudin,1,2 the first to apply a nuclear reaction in detecting beryllium minerals, developed a method that irradiates the sample with gamma rays, which react with beryllium nuclei to produce neutrons. The neutrons are then measured with standard equipment. The cross section for this reaction is about 1 millibarn. The cross section is a measure of the probability that a reaction will take place, for example, between a beryllium nucleus and an incident gamma ray or alpha particles.3-5 At 1-millibarn cross section for the reaction, satisfactory performance required a source strength of the order of 1 curie (3.7 x 10"' disintegrations per sec, where each disintegration releases one or more gamma rays). The reactions will not take place if the gamma radiation is below a minimum energy, in this case 1.63 mev. The size of the source and the energy of the radiation made heavy shielding necessary for these experiments, both to reduce the background count of the neutron counter and to safeguard personnel. The original discovery of the neutron by Chad-wick in 1932 resulted from experiments with another nuclear reaction, induced by bombarding beryllium with alpha particles in which the products are carbon-12 and neutrons. The equation for this reaction is as follows:' " ,Be" + ,He'? 6C12 + 8,n' [1] re-particle neutron In the above nuclear equation (Eq. 1), the sub- script number indicates the number of protons in the nucleus (the atomic number) and the superscript the total number of neutrons and protons (approximately the atomic mass). For the alpha-neutron reaction the cross section is about 250 milli-barns, or 250 times that of the gamma-neutron reaction used by Gaudin. The positively charged alpha particle is repelled by the positive charge of the beryllium nucleus; it must, therefore, have a certain minimum energy in order to approach close enough to the beryllium nucleus to react. For reaction with the beryllium nucleus, the lower limit of the alpha-particle energy is 3.7 mev. The alpha-neutron reaction, with polonium-210 as an alpha source, was selected for the present experiments. Alpha particles are emitted by polonium-210 at 5.30 mev, which is adequate for the reaction with beryllium. Furthermore, this isotope of polonium emits alpha particles with negligible associated gamma radiation, thus eliminating the necessity of shielding. The half-life of polonium-210 is 138 days. Inasmuch as alpha particles carry a possible charge and are large compared with most nuclear particles, their energy is rapidly dissipated in passing through matter. Their range in standard air is 3.66 cm,3 and they penetrate only a few tens of microns into a mineral sample. The short range in air can be minimized by preparation of a flat sample surface that can be brought very close to the alpha source during analysis. On the other hand, short range of alpha particles in air lessens the radiological health hazard and makes it possible to use this method without shielding. It must be emphasized, however, that the alpha emitters are potentially very dangerous if they enter the human body. Polonium must be handled with extreme caution. The literature has reported experiments on the yield of neutrons from reaction of alpha particles with beryllium nuclei. Feld" reports that in intimate mixtures of polonium and beryllium, 3 x 106 eutrons per sec are produced per curie of polonium. Elsewhere in the same reference it is stated that a sandwich-type source yields about one third as many neutrons as an intimate mixture. A table of neutron yields for full energy polonium alpha-particles on thick targets as reported by Anderson7 is the basis of Table I. From Table I it can be deduced that the elements most likely to interfere, i.e., those that also produce neutrons when bombarded by alpha particles, are boron and fluorine. These data also show that it will probably not be possible to determine very small quantities of beryllium in rocks because of the masking effects of the major elements, sodium, magnesium, and aluminum. An IBM/XT microcomputer with 10 MB hard disk storage, together with automatic sensing capability of truck movements at several key locations in the pit, formed the core of this automatic truck dispatching system. System software is written primarily in MICROSOFT FORTRAN with supporting subroutines in MACRO assembly language. The software is designed to automatically monitor truck movement throughout the pit, to make heuristic assignments based on expected shovel availability and truck travel times, and to record production statistics. It is currently dimensioned to handle 50 trucks, 10 shovels, 10 dump sites, and three material types. Due to the lack of funds to purchase the necessary communications hardware, the work related to the automatic sensing of truck movements has not been performed to date. Otherwise, the system is fully operational on a realtime mode.

In the coastal plain region of the middle Atlantic slope there are no large supplies of potable surface-waters. The great rivers by which the region is intersected are tidal estuaries, and the water of their local branches is often of bad quality. The cities situated at intervals along the western margin of the region obtain a plentiful supply of excellent water from the rivers above the tidal estuaries, but out on the coastal plain surface-waters are mainly used. A few artesian wells have been sunk which afford abundant water, but their number is at present very limited. Norfolk, Newport News, and the many smaller places use surface-waters, and all over the region there is great need for purer and more abundant supplies. During the past five years I have been engaged in a study of the geology of the coastal plain for the U. S. Geological Survey, and have given special attention to the question of subterranean waters. In this communication I shall present a brief review of the geological conditions under which such waters occur in this region, and give an account of the wells which have been bored. Unfortunately the number of well-records is small, and some of the most important questions of subterranean geology are as yet far from settled. It is hoped that this paper may lead to further borings, especially as the cost of artesian wells has been much reduced by the introduction of new machinery and methods, and is now quite within the reach of the average community. In New Jersey there are many wells, and the water-bearing horizons are so definitely determined that they may almost everywhere be predicted with certainty. In Maryland and Virginia the data are less definite, but there is excellent evidence of a wide distribution of water at moderate depths.

An approximate theoretical model is proposed to quantitatively predict freezing ranges Tf and hydrostatic tensions P developed within solidifying binary alloys, allowing for a certain amount of diffusion of solute in the solid during solidification. The maxima in ATf and AP as functions of composition are shorn to occur at smaller solute concentrations than would be expected from the equilibrium diagram, and are found to correspond closely to experimentally observed maxima in microporosity. THE freezing range of simple binary alloys appears to have been little studied, except for certain indirect observations on the defects, particularly microporosity and hot tearing, arising in long freezing range materials. Two theories relating to the freezing range of alloys and its effect upon porosity are reasonably well established, and appear to have been held in isolation from each other: a) From purely equilibrium considerations early researchers expected that an increase in solute content of an alloy should increase the freezing range (defined here as the equilibrium freezing range ?Tf = Tl-Ts where TL and Ts are the liquidus and solidus temperatures, respectively) and thereby increase the width of the pasty zone for a given set of conditions. This in turn should increase the difficulty of feeding the residual liquid through the dendrite mesh to compensate for the contraction on solidification, and consequently tend to increase the observed amount of porosity. From qualitative observations on steels Czikel1 reports an increase in porosity with increasing carbon content up to 0.46 pct C. More careful measurements by Whittenberger and Rhines2 on fourteen different alloy systems showed an approximately linear relation between ?Tf and pct porosity (although unfortunately the precise experimental data is not given). b) Conversely however, other authors3"5 propose that porosity is reduced by the presence of increased amounts of eutectic present at the final solidification temperature. Lees7 and Bochvar6 claim that the hot tearing of alloys is similarly reduced. Scheuer8 has put forward a theory to explain this effect, Fig. 1. The argument is basically that solidification progresses on a plane front through a relatively open dendrite network and is thus (the argument is not developed more explicitly) easier to feed. Variation of the horizontal permeability (parallel to the bedding plane) in the vertical section of reservoir rocks has long been observed as a characteristic of a normally heterogeneous system which reservoir rock represent. The use of a recently developed water injection profile device offered opportunity to measure with a high degree of reliability the rate of inflow of water into Burbank sandstone in wells previously cored. Water injection profiles were not correlative with core permeability profiles in such wells. Apparently the vertical permeability substantially influences the flow between strata in a formation in a manner as to void the usual conclusions that have been drawn from consideration of the horizontal permeability measurements alone. The results obtained in comparing water injection profiles with horizontal permeability profiles suggest that many of the usual production operations based upon "selective" behavior or treatment of rock exposed in well bores need to he re-valuated and re-examined. INTRODUCTION Petroleum reservoir rock are heterogeneous systems. Heterogeneity exists in respect to lithologic character insofar as such rock are composed of distinguishable solid phases. Heterogeneity also exists in respect to certain properties, such as porosity and permeability, that vary due to variation of the physi-cal structure of the rock. Except in exceptional cases, both the horizontal permeability (measured parallel to the bedding planes) and the vertical permeability (measured perpendirularly to the bedding planes) exhibit significant variation in any common source of supply. The variation in horizontal permeability. as reflected by con. analyses. has drawn the greatest attention of petroleum technologists probably out of the general notion that the mass movement of fluids in a reservoir is predimonantly in the horizontal direction. Furthermore, in the usual case, the rock permeability measured in the horizontal direction is greater than that in the vertical. The variation of horizontal permeability of reservoir rock has been the basis for developing a number of operating practices and procedures intended to improve the petroleum production operation. Many such procedures are referred to as "selective" in the sense that the practice is intended to control the flow to a more. or less. permeable interval within the common source of Supply. It is often said that such practices are "tailored" to the permeability profile. The practices referred to involve, among others, the following: selective perforation of casing; selective shooting, acidizing and plugging: plugging back to intervals of low permeability; and, regulation of flow to prevent coning of water or gas, or irregular encroachment of water or gas. Certain expressed notions involving a concept of "by-passing," or "trappingl" that are held to be particularly harmful in causing the avoidable loss of recoverable petroleum have grown from observed variations in the horizontal permeability. Oftentimes estimates of the reserve of a common source of supply are tempered by conclusions relating variation in horizontal permeability to recover-ability of the oil-in-place. Certain conclusions attributed to the significance of the variation of the horizontal Permeabilitv often extend to the design and operation of pressure-maintenance projects involving both water flooding and gas-injection. Many advocate increasing the number of injection wells, advocate maintaining uniform and equidistant input-output well patterns, or advocate so-called "dispersed" gas-drive techniques rather than gas-cap injection because the permeability profile of cored wells is supposed to indicate that "by-passing" or "trapping" would otherwise exist. It is important, therefore, to have an opportunity to test whether the variation in the horizontal permeability found through core analyses of a typical reservoir rock is sufficient to establish the paths of fluid flow in a reservoir. It is particularly important to have an opportunity to determine whether flow at the sand face of a well conforms to the permeability profile as established by core analyses. In that manner, the merit of certain 50-called "selective" operating procedures and other notions may be evaluated. The purpose of this paper is to compare horizontal permeability profiles of wells in the Bartlesville (Bur-bank) sandstone with water injection profiles, for the purpose of showing that there is no correlation between the horizontal permeability of a core and the water intake characteristics of a typical sandstone. GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS OF BARTLESVILLE (BURBANK) SANDSTONE The Bartlesville sandstones of Northeastern Oklahoma are off-shore bar deposits.' Although other reservoirs had different processes associated with their deposition or with the formation of their porous, permeable structure, the l!artlesville sandstones on which these field Fields were made are, in every respect. typical petroleum reservoir rock. The permeability of the Bartlesville sandstones shows a typical variation in both the horizontal and vertical direction. Furthermore, the permeability profile logs of wells in any pool are not correlative, even as between wells as close as 660 ft and 330 ft apart.'. The same condition exists in such sand-tones as the Jones Sand at Shuler' and is the ordinary and usual characteristic of reservoir rock. THE FIELD DATA The data reported herein are those obtained from coring of nine wells on the center of ten-acre locations for the purpose of providing water-injection wells in the Bartlesville (Burbank)

I. INTRODUCTION THE utilization of hydro-electric power in electro-metallurgical indus¬tries, aside from purely mechanical operations, may he of two kinds. The electric energy may be used to supply the heat necessary for the per¬formance of the chemical reactions of a metallurgical process, or the elec¬trolytic action of a direct current may be employed for extraction of metals, either in a reduction process or a refining process. In discussing this subject, it is well to distinguish between established industries, which are producing metals and alloys at a profit by use of the electric current, and the many processes which are either still in the experimental stage or have not even passed the paper stage of development of a patent. That is, we consider electro-metallurgical industries as commercial operations which are now consuming large blocks of electric energy, while processes which are not in commercial operation are only prospective consumers. Also, owing to the difficulty and risk of any attempt to foresee the effect of the European war upon electro-metallurgical industries, we have felt obliged to disregard the war entirely, and state our opinions regardless of its existence.

It is well known that under certain conditions ammonia is found in the gas produced by the distillation of coal. Until recently it was held, and many still believe, that this ammonia exists in the coal, and is a natural product of the destructive distillation, varying in percentage, like the other products, according to the nature of the coal, but not formed synthetically beyond that limit. This opinion is in contradiction with well-established facts concerning the formation of ammonia from the elements of the coal. If any ammonia exists as such in the coal, the quantity is insignificant. The purpose of this paper is to explain the theory of the formation of ammonia during distillation, and call the attention of the members of the Institute to its application in connection with the production of heating-gas for metallurgical purposes, etc. For many years little or no importance was attached to the presence of ammonia in coal-gas. It was deemed by the gas-manufacturers an undesirable product of the process, as one of the impurities to be removed; and no attempt was made for its recovery. Not until its practical extraction and utilization was found possible, did scientists commence to investigate the question. Little was known about the nitrogen of the coal, and still less about the reactions leading to its transformation into ammonia. A. W. Hofmann, I believe, was the first to establish a relation between the percentage of nitrogen in the coal and the proportion of ammonia in the coal-gas. As early as 1863 he pointed out that, in dry distillation, such as is practiced in the manufacture of illuminating-gas, only one-third of the total nitrogen in the coal is liberated, two-thirds remaining in the coke. It is no longer possible to doubt that the ammonia is a synthetical product, resulting, under certain conditions, from the combination of the,elements of the coal. The former discussion on the subject started with the consideration of five papers presented at the Chicago meeting in 1893, and continued for several years. The Suggested Lines of Discussion, prepared by Doctor Howe, covered a wide field and added greatly to the success of the work. Naturally, the first step in a new discussion will be to remodel and bring up to date the old Suggested Lines of Discussion so as to embody all the important advances in the metallurgy of steel that have a bearing on the physics of steel and keep the papers and discussions within the field of work undertaken. This paper will be devoted to the practical application, in rolling steel, of the effects of carbon, phosphorus, and manganese on its tensile strength, with some suggestions on further research work. Dr. J. E. Stead, in his paper Influence of Some Elements on the Mechanical Properties of Steel,1 gave a complete review of all that had been done during the past thirty years. He gave full credit to all investigators who worked on these lines, also their results, with his views on same, and in many cases his own results. All of this data and much new valuable information were put in convenient shape for reference and study. To do this required a great deal of work, which is fully appreciated by the steel manufacturers and investigators. The variations in the values given by the different investigators for the increase of the tensile strength of steel for each 0.01 per cent. of carbon, phosphorus, and manganese were largely due to the steels they worked on, the large or small variations in the amount of the elements present, and the omission to take into consideration all the factors, from the blast furnace through to finished rolled material, that affect the character of the steel. For instance, a poorly made dirty steel requires considerably more carbon to give the same ultimate strength than a well-made clean steel with the same phosphorus and manganese content.

The deformation behavior of single crystals of Nb-Mo alloys has been investigated with particular reference to the influence of composition, orientation, and temperature. Strong solid-solution hardening was observed reaching a maximum at the equiatomic cotrlposition and can be attributed to the difference in atomic size between niobium and molybdenutrz. Changes in the form of stress-strain curve, as shown by a high work-hardening rate and restricted elongation to fracture, were observed at a composition of Nb-85 pct Mo and are attributed to the presence of MozC DreciDitate. Conjugate slip was only extensive in dilute alloy samples; at the 50/50 composition deformation rnainly occurred by primary slip, and the onset of conjugate slip gave rise to failure by cleavage on (100). The variation of yield stress of Nb-50 pet Mo with orientation was consistent with slip on (011)(111) slip systems. The temperature deperndence of the yield stress between -196" and 250°C was similar to that of pure bcc metals, but at a much higher stress level; no evidence for twinning %as found. IN recent years the deformation behavior of various pure metals in groups VA and VIA has received considerable attention, but surprisingly little work has been carried out on binary alloys made by mixing metals from the two groups. Such an investigation would be of interest since single crystals of metals of group VA have been shown to deform characteristically with a multistage deformation curve1"3 while a parabolic type of deformation curve has been reported for most of the group VIA metals.4'5 It has been suggested by Law ley and Gaigher~ that the difficulty encountered in obtaining multistage deformation curves for molybdenum in group VIA was possibly because of the presence of a microprecipitate of MozC which they observed even at carbon contents as low as 11 ppm. Recently a multistage deformation curve has been reported for molybdenum ," although the stages are not so definitive as those for group VA metals. The binary alloys of the particular refractory metals which have been investigated in single-crystal form include Ta-w,' Ta- Mo,' and Nb- Na." While a large amount of hardening was observed for alloys of the Ta-W and Ta-Mo systems, associated with room-temperature brittleness for alloys approaching the equiatomic composition, Ta-Nb remained ductile over the complete composition range with little or no solution hardening. Other systems have been investigated by hardness measurements on polycrystalline material and a discussion of the hardening of these alloys has been presented by ~udman." The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the deformation behavior of Nb-Mo alloys in detail, with particular reference to alloy composition and single-crystal orientation. In this way it was hoped to shed some light upon the restricted ductility of these alloy specimens. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The starting materials were obtained in the form of beam-melted niobium rod and sintered molybdenum rod of suitable dimensions. Since niobium and molybdenum form a complete solid-solution series at all temperatures, alloy single crystals were produced by melting the two constituents together in an electron bombardment furnace (EBM). To produce specimens free from segregation a molten zone was passed over the length of each rod six times in alternate directions at a speed of 10 in. per hr. Typical specimens were analyzed for interstitial impurities by gas analysis and for metallic impurities by spectrographic analysis. The results of this analysis are shown in Table I. Many of the tensile specimens were also analyzed (after testing) by scanning the gage length in an electron beam microanalyzer, from which it was found possible to predict the approximate composition of a specimen from the original proportions of each element in the EBM. The tensile specimens were made with a gage length of 0.5 in. and diameter of 0.075 in., using a Servomet Spark machine. By careful machining on the finest range for the final i hr of this technique, surface cracks could be reduced to the level where they were easily removed by electropolishing in a solution of nitric and hydrofluoric acids. The specimens were strained at a rate of 10 4 sec-' using friction grips designed to prevent accidental straining and maintain a good alignment before straining. The orientations of the individual specimens tested are shown in Fig. 1 and the corresponding compositions listed in Table I1 together with collated experimental data. 2)RESULTS a) General Deformation Behavior. The effect of composition on the room-temperature deformation curves of similarly oriented specimens is shown in Fig. 2. The yield stresses of the pure constituents, while not the lowest reported to date, were at least comparable with existing data. Although the solution hardening was large for alloys at either end of the phase diagram, and comparable with the Ta-W solution-hardening data of Ferris et a1.,8 the low work-hardening rate characteristic of niobium was sustained until a composition of Nb-85 pct MO had been reached. The many complexities arising from our present oil pool proration systems emphasize the need for a suitable standard of property rights. Attempts at conservation and unitization agreements have frequently failed because of the lack of such a standard. The necessity of reducing production to consumption has caused umpires, committees, commissions and other governing bodies to allocate the production of flush fields among the respective owners. The methods of allocation vary widely and conservation of underground reserves is frequently neglected or misused. Critical economic conditions increase, rather than modify, competitive methods. In some fields we have irregular and uneconomically close well spacing. Many operators drill unreasonably large holes, take excessive sand penetrations or leave their wells untubed in order to secure higher potential open-flow tests than their offsets. All of these practices result in economic waste and frequently damage to the pool. Regardless of our agreement with the fundamental principles of proration or unitization, both are actual necessities in many of our present economic situations, and we are in urgent need of a suitable standard of rights to facilitate and simplify their operation. The problems pertinent to unit management are simple and of daily use in many partnership enterprises, but the problems of fair and proper division of production under either proration or unitization are, as yet, subject to controversy. The rights of respective owners must be ascertained and standardized before we can eliminate wasteful practices and still preserve constructive competition in our industry. Valuation of Tracts In a recent unitization conference it was found that each participant had a different basis for calculating the relative values of tracts. Some of these assumptions were as follows: 1. Unrestricted open-flow operation to abandonment. 2. Current proration system to abandonment.

INTRODUCTION As mineral particles are made smaller and smaller, it follows that their surfaces assume a greater and greater importance. In the extreme, the colloidal systems are characterized by the complete dominance of surface over bulk properties. Surface characteristics and properties will clearly influence any fine-particle processing operation. Comminution, for example, is a process of creating new surface. Agglomeration, on the other hand, may involve the reduction of surface area and the forces involved are generally surface forces. All mineral separations, solid-solid as well as solid-fluid, involve the treatment of two or more phases (solid plus liquid and/or gas). As the interfacial area increases, so will its effects on processing. Both physical and chemical separations are influenced by interfacial phenomena. Gravity separations are usually performed in a liquid phase and may be affected, for example, by the wetting characteristics of the solids. Flotation processes, of course, are based on the exploitation of differences in surface properties. Hydrometallurgical processing usually involves interfacial chemical reactions, e.g. leaching. The rates of such reactions depend on surface area and may be influenced by electrochemical effects in the electrical double layer at the solid-liquid interface, or by adsorption of reactant and/or product species from solution. In characterizing a mineral surface, it is important to consider first the surface area, since this determines the relative importance of the interfacial effects. The structure and chemical composition of the surface, which may depend on segregation of impurities within the solid and on adsorption from the external environment as well as on the bulk composition of the solid, will generally determine such
