AfteR several years study, the Universal Atlas Cement Co. decided to rebuild its plant at Leeds, Alabama. The entire old plant, which was to operate during the new construction, was then to be scrapped with the exception of two kilns. The quarry was to be mechanized, new and larger kilns installed, with the most modern type of equipment all through the plant. Raw grinding operations at all of the Universal Atlas plants were dry. However, the dust hazard of this operation and the growing emphasis on occupational diseases made wet grinding attractive. Coal at Leeds is cheap, so that a slightly higher coal practice was unimportant. Power was cheap, so that waste-heat boilers were not desirable. Since new kilns were to be installed, these could be made long enough to make filters unnecessary. Wet raw grinding could be either the old practice of open-circuit compartment mills or closed-circuit grinding in accordance with metal-lurgical practice. The latter saved power and steel wear and saved initial investment. This had been demonstrated in cement plants. Also, the elimination of tramp oversize was a most important advantage. Ease of chemical control was another factor. Blending in the thickener, with elimination of slurry mixers had been found practicable. Therefore, if wet raw grinding were used at all, the advantages were clearly in favor of closed-circuit grinding. Detailed layouts of the most modern possible closed-circuit dry-grinding plant and of a closed-circuit wet-grinding plant were prepared, and careful estimates were made of initial investment and operating costs. Full consideration of all the factors involved resulted in a decision to install wet closed-circuit grinding. The capacity of the new kilns was established at 4000 bbl. per day. Two new kilns were installed, each with a capacity of 80 bbl. per hour. Since 625 lb. of raw material is required to make a barrel of finished cement, the capacity of the grinding plant for the new kilns had to average only 1250 tons per day. Sufficient additional grinding capacity had to be provided for the two remaining old kilns, or their possible replacement by a third new kiln. The grinding rate, therefore, was set at 90 tons per

The last few years have shown an increasing interest in the subject of beneficiating iron-ores in all iron-producing countries. In the United States, this movement has been slower than in certain parts of Europe, for the obvious reason that the abundance and relative cheapness of the Lake Superior irou-ores has hindered the development of enterprises for the preparation of low-grade ores. Gradually, however, conditions have changed. The world's consumption of iron is increasing enormously. Being in 1900 about 40,000,000 tons, in 1910 it was already 60,000,000; and there is no reason to doubt that for the near future the increase in iron-cousumption mill continue at the same rapid rate, especially with the development of China, certain parts of Africa, and other regions which have hardly been touched as yet by modern industrialism. It is, therefore, not surprising that apprehension is felt that the known available iron-ore resources of the world are gradually being depleted. Signs of this feeling are the recent iuvestigation, under the direction of the U. S. Geological Survey, of the iron-ore resources of the United States, and the estimate presented to the last International Geological Congress, at Stockholm, Sweden, of the iron-ore resources of the world. These investigations have emphasized the fact that the known high-grade ore-deposits are limited in extent, and will, at a not distant future, be exhausted, compelling the iron industry to depend for raw material on the enormous deposits of low-gratle ores which are distributed over almost all the world. The discovery of new deposits of high-grade ore, in countries not yet thoroughly explored, will not materially change this prospect. Of course, the part which such new deposits will play in the future cannot be forecast. The difficulty and cost of transportation will probably exclude many of them from use at the present centers of the iron industry.

The Mascot mines of the American Zinc Co. of Tennessee are situated in the Holston River valley, in Knox County, Tennessee, about 13 miles (20.9 km.) east of the city of Knoxville, and form a property of three operating shafts and one open pit. A second open pit is located at Jefferson City about 16 miles (25.8 km.) east of the Mascot mines. Geology Topography.—The principal topographical features of the region within which the zinc deposits occur is a series of parallel northeast and southwest ridges which reach altitudes of 200 to 400 ft. (61 to 122 m.) above the valley. These ridges are formed of resistant formation such as sandstone, quartzites, etc., while the valleys are occupied principally by limestone, including Knox dolomite, and by shale and other formations subject to quick erosion. The Holston River valley is wide and open with a rolling surface. Sink holes are common to the limestone portion, the general aspect of the valley being that of well-rounded hills with low intervening valleys superimposed upon which is a characteristic sink-hole topography. General Geology.—According to Keith, the rock formation of the area extends from the lower Cambrian into the Silurian. The region has undergone severe deformation with hcavy faulting, the underlying Cambrian having been brought to the surface by a series of low angle thrust faults, the strike of the faults and formations paralleling the general northeast and southwest direction of the topography and dipping at varying angles to the southeast. In general, the Cambrian quartzites, sandstone, etc., occupy the ridges while the Cambro-Si urian dolomites, limestone and shales occur principally in the valleys. Of the latter, the Knox dolomite is of particular interest to this paper in that it is the ore carrier in the Mascot area. (New York Meeting, October, 1913.) The Equilibrium. Position of A 1.-Some of the most important data on this subject are collected in Table I. Definition of Ae 1-Just as we call A 1 of rising temperature Ac 1, and that of falling temperature Ar 1, so we may give the symbol Ae 1 to the equilibrium position of A 1. Preliminary Assumptions.-In deciding what weight to assign the various data, and indeed what data are to count, three assumptions should be made. These are: 1. The corollary from the phase rule, that the temperature of Ae 1 is constant and independent of the carbon content, though, of course, it may be changed by the presence of other elements. 2. That because neither in heating nor in cooling can the transformation begin before the temperature reaches Ae 1, though it may be delayed by lag till after the temperature has passed beyond Ae 1, therefore Ae 1 should be at or below the observed beginning of Ac 1 and at or above the observed beginning of Ar 1, and, a fortiori, it should be at or below the observed maximum of Ac 1, and at or above the observed maximum of Ar 1. It may be necessary to take these maxima into consideration in view of the experimental difficulty of detecting these beginnings.

This investigation was undertaken for the purpose of determining, in a systematic way, the effect of the rate of cooling of steels, heated to above the transformation range, on their various mechanical properties. This paper gives the results obtained in the investigation of the heat treatment of carbon steels carried out under the auspices of the Committee on The Heat Treatment of Carbon Steels of the Engineering Division, National Research Council. The objects of this committee, of which Dr. Henry M. Howe was chairman, were to increase knowledge of the influence of heat treatment on the mechanical properties of carbon steel. The mcthod pursued was to subject specimens of steel of the carbon contents most used for engineering work, 0.34 per cent., 0.52 per cent., and 0.75 per cent., to various heat treatments, and to test the mechanical properties thus induced. The steels were the same as were used by the committee on fatigue phenomena. This project was financed jointly by the U. S. Bureaus of Mines and Standards; industries and university laboratories have cooperated. A large part of the work was done at Doctor Howe's private laboratory. The committee consisted of F. B. Foley, H. AT. Boylston, H. C. Boynton, G. K. Burgess, H. J. French, J. H. Hall, Zay Jeffries, R. S. Johnston, F. C. Langenberg, H. F. Moore, E. H. Yeirce, H. S. Rawdon, W. E. Ruder and 11. J. Stagg. SEVERAL years ago a group in the metallurgical division of the U. S. Bureau of Mines began a study of the application of new developments in physics to metallurgical problems'. Among these developments were the extensions of what may be termed by analogy the "sound spectrum." Electromagnetic waves, from X-rays to radio waves, have been quite thoroughly explored for metallurgical use, but the sound spectrum, extending from low-frequency vibrations involved in certain types of metal failure by fatigue through the range of audible sound to inaudible vibrations having frequencies of many kilocycles, has had only meager consideration from metallurgists. Because of the general interest in the process recently demonstrated by St. Clair3 for flocculating smoke by means of sound waves, this article is written to point out possible applications of sound and supersonic (ultrasonic) waves in the metallurgical industry.

Recent studies of creep have made it apparent that plastic deformation may occur in metals under stresses less than the elastic limit as determined from short-time tests. In summarizing conclusions drawn from creep tests by various investigators, Tapselll said: "It is evident that if a material has a true elastic range, the elastic limit must represent the maximum stress for no creep." The presence of a definite elastic limit, represented in single crystals by a critical or threshold shearing stress, is claimed by Schmid2, Elam3 and others who have investigated the plastic deformation of single crystals. However, this "law of critical shearing stress" was determined2 from short-time tests, and the measurement of the deformation was made with apparatus primarily designed to observe large amounts of plastic deformation, not to detect elastic changes. Experimental data recently obtained with highly sensitive instruments by A. W. Hanson4 on zinc and by Podaschewsky5 on rock salt indicate that the elastic range in single crystals is considerably narrower than formerly was supposed. Moreover, a theoretical possibility of permanent deformation, under the influence of even the smallest shear stress in single crystals above a certain temperature (Td), has been developed by G. I. Taylor6. This evidence seemed to warrant an examination of the elastic limit in large single crystals by means of creep tests. The first metal chosen for examination was zinc. In order to determine the ability of cyclones with heavy liquids to preconcentrate ores, a study of the variables which govern the behavior of the solids in the apparatus has been made. To assess the test results, the cyclone products have been examined by sink and float analysis at various specific gravities and the results examined by the Tromp type curves. This analysis has allowed the development of the SG50 unit — specific gravity of the particles, 50% of which goes to overflow and 50% to underflow — rather than the d50 (size) unit used in classification. The results of tests using the closed circuit laboratory cyclone assembly with dry feed samples show the validity of the equation: Results indicate that 83% of the feed may be rejected containing 0.1% Sn. Recoveries in excess of 80% are obtained at a grade of 1.7% Sn from feed samples assaying 0.4% Sn. As water-wetted particles may comprise the plant feed, separate tests were performed to examine the effect of water in the feed material. Results indicate that the entrained water divides into two fractions, one of which is defined as free water and is rejected to the cyclone overflow, the other fraction forms an adhering envelope of water on the ore particles, altering their effective size and density. The presence of the envelope of water on the particles increases the ease with which the heavy liquid can be recovered but decreases the concentration efficiency. It is proposed that the detrimental effect of water in the cyclone may be minimized by using a higher feed pressure cx by the use of surfactants. A higher feed pressure, by increasing shearing forces, would reduce the thickness of the water envelope on the particles. The surfactants, by adsorbing on the particles and producing hydrophobic surfaces, would displace the water envelope and allow the heavy liquids to wet the modified surfaces. In both cases a larger proportion of the entrained water would report to the cyclone overflow as free water, thus minimizing the detrimental effect of water on the concentration efficiency. Additional testing is required on the behavior of water in the system; to determine the optimum particle size for the preconcentration step; to determine final particle size for optimum liberation and subsequent treatment of the products in present plants and to determine the efficiency with which the heavy liquids may be recovered from the products. For many years tin mining in Bolivia has been very important to the economy of the country. In recent years the tin content of the ore reserves has been steadily declining. An improvement in concentration efficiency is highly desirable in order to increase productivity from the present low-grade mine ores and to allow retreatment of the many millions of tons of tailings from past operations, some of which equal the present ores in tin content. A number of investigators have been or at present are working on various phases or approaches to the problem. Gravity concentration is used in Boliva today as it has been in the past to recover tin minerals from the mine ores. An objective of the work reported in this paper was to examine the possibility of treating present low-grade ores and sink-float tailings products, at a relatively coarse grind, in order to produce a higher grade feed material to the present gravity concentration plants. The possibility of using heavy liquids in cyclones to treat large tonnages with a minimum of outlay presented itself and is of particular interest since heavy liquids are now available with physical properties which lend themselves to simple recovery methods. Tests were carried out using a closed circuit laboratory cyclone assembly. It was desirable to determine the value of using the SG50 concept and Tromp curves for analyzing the cyclone concentration test results. The effects of entrained water on the behavior of ore particles in the cyclone were examined. ONE of the main functions of the United States Bureau of Mines is to obtain and disseminate information that will promote safety in and around mines, and the health and safety of employees engaged in mining. Serious health and safety conditions arising out' of contamination of air in metal mines by dust, fumes from explosives and fires, and absorption of oxygen by timber and other causes, led the Bureau of Mines to cooperate with the United States Public Health Service in the study of dust occurrence and ventilation in metal mines in various parts of the country. Dr. A. J. Lanza, of the U. S. Public Health Service, and Edwin Higgins, mining engineer of the U. S. Bureau of Mines, in 1915, made a detailed study in the mines around Joplin, Mo., their reports1 are now available. In 1916, 1917, and 1918, a similar study was made in the Butte, Mont., region by Doctor Lanza and D. Harrington, mining engineer of the Bureau of Mines; the reports of this investigation will be available soon. In 1919, the study was continued in some of the Arizona mines by D. Harrington, of the Bureau of Mines, and G. E. McElroy and Dr. R. A. Koronski, of the U. S. Public Health Service, the underground work being completed in June, 1920; these reports are now being prepared for publication. In the spring of 1920, the scope of the work was extended, with D. Harrington in charge as supervising mining engineer, and short studies made in the mines of the Coeur d' Alenes in Idaho and around Oatman, Ariz. It is hoped soon to extend the work into mines of California, Nevada, Colorado, Michigan, and Minnesota, and ultimately to other states should the mining companies be willing to cooperate.

THE United Verde Extension mine is located in the Jerome mining district, on the eastern slope of the Black Hills, approximately northeast of the town 'of Jerome, Yavapai County, Arizona. The ore deposit may be termed a replacement in Yavapai schist. This schist is one of the oldest formations in the district, being probably of volcanic origin, and has been folded and faulted and contains intrusions of diorite and quartz porphyry. It is believed that the mineralization followed the porphyry intrusions and replaced the country rock; this was followed by erosion and a period of secondary enrichment, all completed in pre-Cambrian time. Later sediments of sandstones and limestones, to the depth of approximately 600 ft. (182 m.), were laid down, followed by volcanic flows. Faulting and erosion again took place, resulting in the present complicated arrangement of the strata. Prospecting, therefore, is very difficult, because the sediments practically cover the mineralized areas. This necessitates the sinking of deep shafts, cross-cutting, and, in some instances, diamond drilling to learn something of the various relations of the different formations and the occurrences of intrusions associated with ore deposition. The locating of new orebodies, therefore, is beset with innumerable difficulties. EARLY MINING METHODS The two orebodies constituting the principal resources of the company are known as the- small orebody and the Bonanza, or large orebody. These are about 150 ft. (45 m.) apart, and while they appear to be distinct orebodies may later prove to be connected. The character of the ore, the general associations of the porphyries adjoining the orebodies, and other characteristics, both in the ore-and general environment, are very similar. The small orebody was the first to be discovered and was mined for some time before the Bonanza was found.

A multistage mixer-settler extractor described in earlier hydrodynamic studies was simulated on a computer. A mass transfer mechanism was derived based on a pseudo distribution constant and a pseudo first-order rate constant. The constants were adjusted to give the proper output concentrations and proper form of the stage-wise concentrations. The results obtained by computer simulation of start-up conditions show very good agreement with experimental data. A second simulation was constructed which demonstrated that the model can be greatly simplified and still yield good results.

E. M. Fitchett (Johnstown, Pa.)—The fact stated by the authors that: "In the laboratory, without marked efficiency decreases, the authors have deposited zinc successfully from solutions containing as high as 1 g per liter of germanium," (p. 465, paragraph 3) is most unusual. A similar statement is made in the summary and conclusions: "Germanium alone, within normal operating limits does not cause large efficiency losses." The limits are not defined. These facts are directly contrary to much of the published history on the effect of germanium in zinc electrolysis. A description of the conditions leading to such a successful electrolysis would be of interest to all engaged in the production of electrolytic zinc. It is unfortunate that the authors of this paper did not determine the actual concentration of germanium and cadmium in the solutions which they electrolyzed after a zinc dust purification. This purification will take out a variable amount of these impurities, depending upon the composition of the dust, type of agitation, presence of activating agents, etc. Probably every electrolytic zinc plant in this country has accurate methods, both wet and spectrographic, for determining germanium and cadmium. These specific methods, adopted from the standard analytical literature, are often available to educational institutions for the asking. The headings of Fig. 2 and of the two tables, with their definite concentrations of germanium and cadmium (which are not so definite according to the footnotes) could possibly be somewhat misleading, since the actual amounts of germanium and cadmium present during electrolysis are not known. Even the 1 hr electrolysis time might be too short for a study of this type; 12 or 24 hr tests might be much better. Commercial solutions have been known that gave over 90 pct ampere efficiency during the first hour of electrolysis, but no metal at all after 24 hr.

Heine's " blue test" for copper, as described by the authorities generally, calls for a set of standard colors; and there has been some discussion concerning the relative superiority, for this purpose, of sulphate and nitrate solutions. The whole matter evidently hinges on the preservation of the standard colors in well-stoppered bottles. The apparatus described by Q. L. Heath* cannot be much improved, when very accurate readings are required. The following method was devised for the purpose of doing away with preserved sets of standard colors, by making a fresh standard for each batch of assays. The solutions are prepared in the usual way, each ammoniacal solution being filtered into its separate bottle, and then filled up to the containing-mark and thoroughly mixed. A similar color-bottle, with an " S " etched upon it, to distinguish it from the other bottles, which are numbered to correspond with the samples, is kept to run the standard. About 150 C.C. of water is put into it, and then the amount of acid (sulphuric or nitric) present in each determination, followed by 30 C.C. of ammonia (s. g. 0.90), which should make the mixture strongly ammoniacal. The liquid is now made up almost to the containing-mark (200 c.c.), say within 1 C.C. The lowest assay is selected first and placed alongside the standard, which, at the beginning, contains no copper. A copper-solution is then dropped into the standard from a burette ; and after each addition the bottle is well shaken and compared with the assay-sample. This operation is repeated until the two shades match exactly, when the burette is read and the assay-result is calculated. The assay next in order of depth of color is now taken and treated in the same way, and so on, until the batch is completed. It

TIE fundamental principle of resistance thermometry lies in the determination of temperatures by the measurement of an electrical conductor subjected to various temperatures and the translation of the resultant changes, in ohms, into temperature equivalents. Such resistance measurements can be made with maximum precision by the use of a standard Wheatstone bridge and a reflecting galvanometer of high sensitivity. Under such conditions, results are obtainable that may be accurate within 0.1 or even 0.01 per cent., and the "idiosyncrasies" of heated electrical conductors can be studied with advantage and profit, even if the latter is not of a financial nature. The chief requisites for producing a serviceable -commercial instrument may be enumerated as follows: First, there must be a resistor or "bulb" that can stand the maximum temperature without deterioration and which has a pronounced temperature coefficient. Second, there should be constructed an "even" bridge, having two fixed arms of equal values, in ohms. Third, a rheostat, the maximum resistance of which will be equal to the total change in the resistance of the bulb, between temperature extremes, is required. Fourth, there must be a sensitive galvanometer which is aperiodic, or nearly so. Finally, there should be a fairly steady source of direct current. The general scheme of this type of apparatus, in its simplest form, can be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1. Resistors A and B are constructed of manganin, therlo, or some other resistance wire having a negligible temperature coefficient. The sensitive D'Arsonval galvanometer G has its zero in the center. R is a rheostat and X is a resistor or bulb made of insulated platinum wire, or else of nickel, copper, or some alloy, according to requirements. K is a battery, but a direct-current service line is often used instead, with sufficient ballast in series to properly reduce the current.
