The use of strain gauges and compression pads for an underground bolt installation in a central Pennsylvania coal mine revealed that satisfactory anchorage could not be maintained in the shale stratum that constituted the immediate roof. Comprehensive laboratory tests resulted in a new shell designed with an increased area of contact and smaller surface serrations. Retightening of the bolt was also found to be beneficial for maintenance of high load values. Roof bolting in coal mines has progressed very rapidly in the last decade, and today this method of support is in general use. There are many theories concerning the functions of roof bolts, but the importance of beam building is indisputable. Proper tension in the bolts minimizes shearing along bedding planes and creates a thick, competent beam from individually weak layers. Bolting must be accomplished immediately upon exposure of the roof, and bolt tension must be maintained if roof failure is to be prevented. Seams are being mined today with roof bolt support where conventional timbering was not effective.' The widespread use of continuous mining equipment was made possible by roof bolts which permit long supported spans free of obstructions. Since adequate anchorage is the key to successful bolting, better methods for determining the efficiency of anchorage are continually being sought. Attempts have been made to measure bolt loads, thus assessing anchorage efficiency by employing sensing devices between the bolt head and roof. 3-s None of the techniques appears to be very accurate, and all have at least one serious deficiency. The greatest efforts are being directed toward the standardization of the pull test.6" Nevertheless, the author believes that the pull test is only one criterion for establishing the efficiency of anchorage and not necessarily the most important one. The conventional pull test involves the short-term application of forces, whereas the success of roof bolt installations is dependent upon the ability of anchorage to sustain relatively long-term forces. Therefore, it would appear that the time-dependent function of the anchor is the single most important parameter for the success of roof bolting in many types of rocks. UNDERGROUND TESTS Strain gauges and compression pads were employed to measure bolt loads in a central Pennsylvania coal mine.8 Bolting had been employed only sporadically in the shale top since dubious benefits were obtained with this type of support. Table I shows some typical results from this investigation. Anchorage losses were extremely variable among the bolts, but all showed a considerable degree of bleed-off. The tests indicated that anchorage efficiency was extremely low in this type of shale. The results confirmed that bolting under these conditions was practically worthless, and thus a waste of material and labor. Probably even more important, bolting constituted a hazard when reliance was placed upon it for support. Certainly the complete lack of confidence in roof bolting, which was apparent in the mine personnel, was justifiable since the bolts did not accomplish their purpose. PRELIMINARY LABORATORY BOLT TESTS The extreme losses in bolt tension that were detected in underground installations prompted a comprehensive study to assess the causes. However, preliminary studies were first made to determine the combined stresses in a roof bolt and to prove conclusively that the observed bleed-off phenomena were due to anchorage: slippage and not to some other physical manifestation. THE potential iron ores of Michigan can be classified from the stand- point of the predominant impurities into siliceous, sulphurous and phosphorous ores. Research on the flotation of each of these classes of ore was carried out in the following manner. The flotative properties of the valuable minerals of iron and of the worthless and deleterious ones were first determined under carefully controlled conditions. This information was then applied to synthetic mixtures of these minerals, which simulated the potential ores. Finally, data obtained during the two foregoing stages of the investigation were used in the flotation beneficiation of samples of the potential ores. Hematite is the most important mineral of iron in each of the above classes of iron ores. This paper deals with a study of that mineral in the very nearly pure state. There are two varieties of the mineral-specular hematite and massive hematite. The latter is the principal variety, but the former is an important mineral of iron in some of the potential ores. Because of this condition, flotation research was performed with both varieties. This research consisted essentially of: (1) a survey of the literature on hematite flotation, (2) the preparation of pure massive hematite, (3) the preparation of pure specular hematite, (4) the development of a laboratory procedure and (5) flotation experimentation. For the purpose of this discussion, the results of previous work on the flotative properties of hematite can be summarized as follows: Specular hematite has been readily floated with terpineol and sodium oleate or heptylic acid1. Further, hematite has been likewise floated with a proprietary frother and oleic acid or other soluble oils2. WHATEVER the outcome of the Industrial Recovery Act, it has currently injected the first hope and optimism into the coal industry for more than a decade. Compared with the recent drab years the results are impressive: Bituminous production for the first ten weeks, 78,000,000 tons, may be compared with 63,000,000 last year; anthracite, 14,600,000 tons and 9,600,000 tons for the same periods, respectively, bringing the heaviest payrolls in ten years with individual checks reminiscent of former boom times. Hurried calls for long deferred new equipment and replacements have stimulated foundry and machine works and the -invigorating effect on the railroads is indicated by the first actual car shortage in a decade. And even in the welter of confusion over code prices, this heavy tonnage has moved at the most profitable figure the coal man has realized for many years, though with the large volume on old contracts, profits were not as large as many think.\

AN historical society of particular interest to mining engineers all over the world was born in Cornwall in 1935. A hundred-year-old winding engine then finished its long labors at the Levant mine on the cliffs near Lands End, England. The engine was to be dismantled and scrapped. A few men living near-by, appreciating that this event was one of the final acts in closing a long century of extraordinary mining and engineering evolution. armed a committee to prevent the destruction of the old mine hoist and succeeded in purchasing the engine. They restored the engine house and in time arranged with the Manor of Trewellard, owners of the land, for a 99-year ground lease on a peppercorn rental.

Two methods are used to obtain the relatiorlship between ratio of gas to oil permeability and gas saturation. One method is to calculate a curve from field measurements of reservoir behavior: the other is to measure the relationship on a core .sample in the laboratory. The curves resulting from these TWO methods arc often comparer1 and seldom found to agree. The most important reason for the nonagreement is often overlooked. This reason is that the performance k9/k0 curve is calculated with the assumption of uniform pressure and saturution throughout the reservoir. To show the differerence between performance type kg/k0 curves and laboratory type kg/k0 curves. two performance type kg/k0 curves for two different production rates were calculaled from the production perforrnance of a hypothetical reservoir for which a laboratory type curve was assumed. Production performance of the hypothetical reservoir bras calcu- lated by use of international Business Machine's 701 Computer. The perfortnance type kg/k0 curves differed from the laboratory curve for the hypothetical reservoir. The performance type crrrve for the lowest production rate most nearly coincided with the laboratory curve. INTRODUCTION Predictions of oil reservoir performance are often made with the aid of complex numerical calculations. An important quantity required in these calculations is the ratio of gas permeability to oil permeability (kg/k0 )at a particular gas saturation. Two methods arc used to obtain a relationship between this ratio and gas saturation. The curves resulting from these two methods are called performance kg/k0 curves and laboratory kg/k0 curves. The performance curve is obtained from field measurements of reservoir behavior. Particular kg/k0 values are calculated from the producing gas-oil ratio, the cumulative reservoir withdrawals, the original oil in place, the average reservoir pressure, and the PVT properties of the reservoir fluids. The particular kg/k0 values are then plotted against the average rcservoir gas saturations for the entire history period. In order to use this derived kg/k0 relationship for performance predictions, a curve through these points is extrapolated to higher gas saturations. The laboratory kg/k0 curve is obtained from measurements made on core samples. Saturation is maintained uniform throughout the core during these measurements. The kg/k0 curves obtained with these two independent methods are often compared and seldom are found to be the same. Various reasons have been offered for the lack of correlation. One is that insufficient core? were obtained to derive a curve representative of the reservoir rock. Another is that laboratory methods have failed to reproduce reservoir conditions. The most important reason for the noncorrelation has been often overlooked because of the difficulty in evaluating its effect. This reason is that the performance or field kg/k0 curve is calculated with the assumption of uniform pressure and saturation throughout the reservoir. In any

GENERALLY speaking, the production of other metals in Mexico fluctuates with that of silver. The first commercial discovery of mineral was in Taxco, Guerrero, in 1552. Five years later, the patio process was introduced at Pachuca, by Bartolome de Medina. In 1884, the main line of the Mexican Central R. R. was completed and a few years later, the National railway. In 1907, the patio process, after 350 years of successful operation, was replaced by cyanidation. Soon after the completion of the railroads, smelters were built at various points and provided means of treating ores that could not be treated by any of the processes existing at that time, such as patio, lixiviation, or pan amalgamation. As a result, a number of mines were developed along the railroads and even far \ out in the mountains. In order to facilitate the shipment of this ore to the smelters, purchasing agencies were established, which for a time were very profitable; most of these agencies are now permanently closed.

The beginning of Colorado's mining industry is linked on one side with that of the Appalachian districts and on the other side with that of California, because the first discoveries were made by pioneers when on their way from Georgia to California. In the summer of 1849 a party of seven Georgians were taking a herd of thoroughbred horses across the continent to the Pacific coast. They reached Camp Lyon, on the Arkansas river, in October, and, meeting James Dempsey, a Government guide, they were persuaded by him that it was too late to cross the mountains that season. His advice was accepted, and, moving northward, they established a winter camp at the junction of Cherry creek with the Platte, close to the site of the city of Denver. Upon a sand-bar, lining the south side of the river, they built two cabins. During the closing months of 1849 they prospected the alluvial banks of Cherry creek, but they made no attempt to penetrate into the mountain canyons, near them, westward, for fear of the Indians.* They found gold in several places along Cherry creek, and particularly at a spot 16 miles up the stream from their camp. From the feathers of the wild geese that they shot they obtained quills in which they placed their gold-dust. This party of Georgians consisted of Dr. L. J. Russell and his brother, Green Russell, also A. T. Lloyd, G. W. Kiker, and P. H. Clark. Early in 1850 they crossed the main range of the Rocky Mountains by the Bridger pass and went on to California. Based on metallographic and X-ray data probable equilibrium conditions from 1340" to 2400°F are presented for the composition range investigated. These are correlated with investigations of Takei and Kuo. Provision is made for existence of Mo, C and (Fe, Mo)2,C, carbides heretofore omitted in diagrams in this composition range. These carbides and (Fe, Mo),C, in equilibrium with ferrite and austenite, restrict the austenite and austenite + ferrite fields to lower carbon contents and higher temperatures than in the Fe-C system. OK groups of steel of different molybdenum content, but with approximately the same carbon variation in each group, Table I, were studied. The alloys were melted in an acid-lined 30-lb high-frequency induction furnace, and the ingots forged to l-in. rounds, which were then ground to 0.75-in. diam. To minimize chemical segregations a short length of each bar was given a high-temperature heat treatment as listed in Table I. Specimens 0.062 to 0.125-in. thick were thereafter cut from the homogenized bars for heat treatment to determine phase changes in the alloy. Heat treatments were performed in either a lead bath or muffle-type electric furnace, depending upon the temperature required. Maximum temperature variation was * 2" F in the lead bath and * 5"F up to 1900°F and +8"F above 1900°F in the electric furnace. Adequate protection of the specimen from the oxidizing atmosphere in the electric furnace was obtained by sealing the specimen in either a pyrex or a silica capsule which was evacuated or not as circumstances required. For austenitizing followed by quenching to an isothermal temperature, the specimen was placed in a closed-end refractory tube the mouth of which, extending beyond the furnace, was connected to a vacuum pump. The specimen could be withdrawn from this tube and quenched as desired. IDENTIFICATION OF PHASES The principal method of identification of phases was metallographic examination conducted on surfaces well removed from exposure to lead or atmosphere effects during heat treatment. Hardness measurements (Dph/lOkg) were also made on these surfaces. The etching reagents used and their effects are listed in Table II. Martensite and ferrite were readily recognized by their customary appearance after etching with saturated picral or 1 pct nital. The presence of liquid at high temperature was indicated by curved interfaces characteristic of boundaries between solid and melt, by intergranular pools of dendritic areas in a carbide matrix, and by a black network coincident with austenite grain boundaries. Examples of these structures are shown in Figs. l(a) and (0). The types of carbide which were attacked by the electrolytic chromic acid etch and the alkaline KMnO, etch, Table 11, were identified by X-ray analyses of extracted carbides of five alloys. Carbide residue was obtained from a metallographic specimen by etching the specimen for 24 hr in hydrochloric-picric acid in alcohol (grain-size reagent), after which the carbides, standing in relief, were scraped from the surface of the specimen and mounted on a glass slide. Diffraction patterns were obtained with a Philips spectrometer using iron-filtered cobalt radiation. Figs. 2, 3, 4, and 5 illustrate typical etching behaviors with chromic acid and alkaline KMnO,. Chromic acid attacked Mo,C as shown in Figs. 2(a) and (b)-but not (Fe, Mo),C, Fig. 3(b). Alkaline KMnO, attacked (Fe, Mo),C, Fig. 3(c), and also attacked M0,C. In accordance with these behaviors, a typical differentiation of coexisting Mo,C and (Fe, Mo),~ is shown in Figs. 4(a) and (b). The carbide (Fe, Mo),,C, could not be obtained free of other coexisting carbides for etching experiments. The behavior. however. of coexisting carbides identified by x-ray diffraction as Mo,C ind (Fe, Mo),,C, indicate that (Fe, Mo)23C6 is not etched by chromic

Constant-load creep-rupture tests were conducted in an argon atmosphere at temperatures of 1600 to 2200°F on two heats of iron containing about 0.06 and 0.09 pct P in solid solution. The tests were conducted in the as-cast condition. Stresses were selected to give strain rates approaching those encountered in the hot working of steel, and within the limits of the creep-rupture test apparatus, namely. from about 0.001 to 50 pct per sec. FOR generations, rolling and forging practices have been developed largely by empirical methods, based on prior experience. While largely successful, difficulties are frequently encountered when new or different alloy compositions are tried for the first time. There is need to know the relationships which exist among temperature, strain rate, composition, and other variables on the deformation and fracture characteristics of steels. It has been shown for aluminum and several high-temperature alloys that the deformation and fracture characteristics follow rather well-defined laws and patterns which are closely related to the effects of strain rate, temperature, and composition.1"3 As the melting temperature of aluminum or its alloys was approached, it was possible to study the interplay of work-hardening factors and recovery or recrystal-lization, the latter resulting in improved ductility and increased resistance to intercrystalline fracture. In particular, the effects of composition are very poorly known. Within the meaning of "composition" should be included impurity elements, such as sulfur, phosphorous, lead, copper, and many others, as well as those elements which are added for alloying purposes in iron. The role of multiphase structures, in contrast to solid solutions, should also be studied in much greater detail. high strain rate creep-rupture tests would provide information regarding the deformation and fracture characteristics of metals at hot-working temperatures. It was also desired to establish the stresses which are necessary to accomplish the desired deformation, and to relate these to the strain rate and temperature. Secondly, it was the purpose of this particular study to determine the effects of phosphorus, within solid solution limits, on the deformation and fracture characteristics of iron at hot-working temperatures. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Two phosphorus levels were selected, one corresponding to the upper limit normally found for commercial steels, and one substantially higher than this, but within the region of solid solubility at the test temperatures chosen for this investigation. Twenty-pound heats were prepared by induction melting electrolytic iron in air in a magnesia lined furnace. After deoxidation with about 0.2 pct Al, ferro-phosphorus was added, and the heats were then poured into prefired silica molds. The purpose of using silica molds was to obtain a slow cooling rate during solidification to produce a relatively coarse grain size, producing a structure subject to some segregation and therefore more nearly characteristic of ingot structures. The major part of the casting assembly provided a large shrinkage head in order to produce sound castings and to promote slow cooling of the specimens. The primary austenitic grain size varied from ASTM No. 2 to No. 00. The composition of the heats, including a low phorphorus melt, used for comparison purposes, is shown in Table I. It will be noted that the oxygen content of the phosphorus containing heats is relatively high, in spite of the deoxidation practice, a condition which is difficult to control in small melts. Creep-rupture tests were nevertheless undertaken when it was noted that this quantity of oxygen did not appear to give results any different from those from a heat containing 0.01 pct 0, low phosphorus and comparable carbon Content;4 see Table 11.

PETROLEUM has been found in Russia in various localities from north to south, as may be seen from the list given below: (a) In the basin of the Petchora river, Northern Russia. (b) In the basin of the Volga river, in the governments of Samara and Saratoff. (c) In the government of Astrakhan and in the Uralsk territory, close to the northern and eastern coast of the Caspian sea. (d) At Grozny in Northeastern Caucasus. (e) In the Daghestan territory, Eastern Caucasus, on the Caspian sea. (f) On the Apsheron peninsula (Baku and other districts) close to the Caspian sea shore. (g) On the island of Tcheleken in the Caspian sea, also on the island of Sviatoi. (h) In the Transcaspian territory on the Neftianaia Gora (Oil hill) and on the surrounding hills. (i) In the Ferghana valley in Russian Central Asia. (j) On the Kertch and Taman peninsulas on the Black sea. (k) In Siberia it has been discovered in the Transbaikal territory and on the island of Sakhalin. In the above-mentioned districts petroleum has been found to exist under different geological conditions and to vary in its chemical and physical properties. At the present time petroleum is produced in Russia at Baku, Grozny, on the island of Tcheleken, in the Ferghana district, and in the Uralsk territory. The yearly production in 1912 throughout the Russian Empire amounted to 69,400,000 barrels, of which the Baku fields were responsible for 52,000,000 barrels. This shows that the Baku fields on the Apsheron peninsula are the chief oil-producing centers in Russia, being at the same time the oldest of all our oil fields.. In this paper I shall discuss the Baku fields only, leaving all the others until a later date.

Minerals: When man first picked up an appropriately shaped stone and fastened it to a stick of wood to create a primitive axe or hammer he started down the long road of mineral dependency that has continued until today (Fig. 2). Though he did not realize it, that man and his stone axe created an extremely simple form of mineral economy. The struggle against extinction from that day has been fought with minerals. In addition to providing himself with a means to fight for survival, he also exhibited an increase in intelligence. As his curiosity was stimulated, his ability increased to provide himself with better mineral and metal weapons and tools. Today, when we examine the artifacts of past civilizations, we measure the degree of development that had been attained by the variety of metals and minerals possessed and how they were used. The metals employed are so characteristic of the level of intelligence that we have named the various stages of human progress by the metals that were most commonly utilized. Thus, mall went through the Stone Age, the 13ronze Age, the Iron Age and now has reached the Steel Age. The first period of mineral development, the Stone 4ge, began during late Pliocene time. In this first mineral age, prehistoric man began to shape stones by chip- ping off small pieces until the stone assumed the crude form he wanted. As his intelligence increased, he progressed to finer workmanship and turned out finished spear heads and barbed arrows. Throughout this very

Sulfurization of copper oxides was investigated using differential thermal analysis (DTA) and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). When mixtures of cuprous oxide and sulfur were heated, the surface of the cuprous oxide was converted to cupric sulfide at the melting point of sulfur (119°C); additional sulfuriza-tion took place when the sulfur vaporized above 200°C. Cupric oxide also reacted with sulfur to form cupric sulfide but the starting temperature was approximtely 225°C. When the cupric oxide and sulfur were physically separated, sulfurization still occurred indicating a reaction with the vapor phase of sulfur. Sulfurization was obtained in runs with cuprite, chrysocolla and basic copper carbonate. Further decomposition of cupric to cuprous sulfide was noted at somewhat higher temperatures. The DTA-TGA data made it possible to set up postulated reactions in each system. These techniques were found to be well suited for studies of this type. Because of the difficulty encountered in flotation of many metallic oxide minerals, efforts have been made to find suitable reagent combinations to sulfi-dize these minerals in the flotation circuit. Recently Bautista and Sollenberger,1 using a different approach, showed that the surfaces of many oxide minerals can be converted to sulfides by heating them with sulfur to temperatures between 150° and 225°C. This technique was effective even with chrysocolla, a mineral which is very difficult to sulfidize. The primary objective of the present study was to obtain information on the reactions between the oxide minerals and suIfur. A better understanding of the mechanisms involved might prove useful in pointing the way to improvements in the process. A secondary objective was to demonstrate the value of thermo-analysis in investigations of this type. Bollin and Kerr2 have reported the use of a modification of differential thermal analysis to study the thermal reactions which occur on heating elemental constituents in a closed system to synthesize copper sulfides and iron sulfides. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) was used to detect enthalpic changes as mixtures of minerals and sulfur were heated. The DTA indicated the temperatures at which reactions started and whether they were exothermic or endothermic. Weight change data were obtained by thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA). These data could often be used to support postulated reactions and to eliminate consideration of other possible reactions. EQUlPMENT Differential thermal analysis (DTA) involves measuring the temperature difference between the sample being tested and a thermally inert reference, generally aluminum oxide, as both are heated at a uniform rate. Series connected thermocouples in the sample and reference are used to detect the temperature differences that occur as the sample undergoes enthalpic changes.3 Crystalline transitions, fusions, vaporizations, dehydrations, decompositions and many solid state reactions can be detected. A DTA unit manufactured by the Robert L. Stone Co., Austin, Tex., was used in this investigation with a temperature rate increase of 10°C per min. The samples and reference were placed in Inconel cups with wells in the bottom into which the differential thermocouples fit, and run in a nitrogen atmosphere. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) measures the changes in weight that a sample undergoes as it is heated. A Chevenard thermobalance converted electronically for graphic recording was used with a heating rate of 5°C per minute. An X-Y recorder plotted temperature on the X axis and weight changes on the Y axis. A flow of 250 ml per min of nitrogen was streamed through the furnace. Samples were placed in a porcelain crucible open at the top, unless otherwise noted. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS Sulfur: Two sulfur samples from different sources were tested. The DTA of a high purity sulfur and a reagent grade sublimed sulfur are shown in Fig. 1. Nearly all the tests were run with the sublimed sulfur due to the difficulty in grinding and high electrostatic charge encountered with the high purity sample. The thermal insulation of high-temperature equipment for industrial purposes is a subject that has not received from engineers and designers the attention its importance deserves. This may be attributed to a number of causes: In the first place, heat flow is a rather difficult factor to measure under the working conditions of an industrial furnace, and until the comparatively recent introduction into certain operations of the heat balance sheet, with a systematic attempt to account for the discrepancies in the totals, the various causes of heat losses and the reasons for their existence were not brought to light. Moreover, such rapid advancement and radical changes in the design of equipment, especially in metallurgical lines, have occurred that practice has apparently outdistanced the theory of design. In the modern tendency toward greatly increased size of units, effort has seemingly been made to utilize the heat of fuel gases without proper attention having been paid to conserving heat energy and confining it strictly to the points of maximum activity. The systematic study of the thermal properties of structural materials, which is being carried out by various government bureaus and also by a number of technical societies, is forming the basis for more intelligent and consistent work in the economically important subject of prevention of fuel waste. Advantages of Insulation It is not necessary in this practical and utilitarian age to enlarge upon the need of prevention of heat losses, but attention may advantageously be called to the other benefits derived simultaneously with the saving in fuel and the increase in thermal capacity of furnaces when properly insulated. In most industrial furnaces—which are here spoken of in the broadest sense, indicating general high-temperature equipment for any purpose and heated in any manner—the operations are generally carried on through a temperature range which has been found by practice to give the most ef-

R. V. NorHis, Wilkes-Barre, Pa. (communication to the Secretary*) : The electric-haulage plant of the Short Mountain Colliery of the Lykens Valley Coal Co., mentioned by Messrs. Stoek and Harris as the earliest underground electric plant in the United States (and, I believe, the second in the world), was started July 23, 1887. The plant, designed by W. M. Schlessinger, consists of two motor-cars, each weighing about 5 tons and equipped with a 32-h.p. Union Electric Go. motor. The original general construction of the motor-cars is shown by Mr. Stoek; but they were rebuilt, the same year, with some important improvements in design; and, except for strengthening the frames and replacing the original pig-iron weights by a casting, they have not been greatly changed since that time. A complete list of the elements as given for 1915 includes 18 that melt above 1,700" C. There does not exist one complete thermal equilibrium diagram for any pair of these 18 elements. Several of these elements have been combined, in relatively small proportions, with metals of lower melting point: e.g., tungsten, molybdenum, and vanadium, in steels, or with nickel and cobalt; but of this refractory group, platinum is the only one that has been extensively studied in this connection. When one considers that, with few exceptions, the industries have made use of alloys to the exclusion of pure metals, it is reasonable to expect that alloys of this refractory group will invade fields in which the pure metals have found little application. The past neglect of this class of metals has, no doubt, been partly due to the rarity of some of them, for even though alloys of very valuable properties should be developed, their cost, unless in exceptional applications, would be prohibitive. There is also a well-founded reluctance to undertake research involving very high temperatures which, in the case of most of these elements, must be accompanied by an inert atmosphere as well. This combination of high temperatures*and control of atmosphere within the heating chamber of any furnace of present design is a difficult problem. It is the purpose of this paper to give results,' of an investigation of one binary series of this group, in which methods were employed that avoided the usual difficulties accompanying high-temperature alloy investigation. , Historical.—The alloys of tungsten and molybdenum have received very little consideration during the past. During the past few years the author has had an opportunity to examine a number of base-metal mines in the western United States, France and Spain. Nearly all of these mines produced some silver, and laboratory studies of the relationship between the silver and the various base-metal minerals in the ore have given some interesting and, it is to be hoped, enlightening facts. As this work was undertaken primarily to ascertain the amount of silver chemically associated with, not controlled by, the various base-metal minerals, the laborious and not always satisfactory method of picking out "pure" samples of each mineral from many localities was employed. However, the results obtained have justified the time that has been spent. Not only have the conclusions arrived at in different mining areas been in accordance with one another but in many instances they have afforded scientific support or explanations for much of the knowledge that operators in the various camps have acquired by practical experience. Although many of the conclusions are not new, many of the facts are, and the results, if they do nothing else, serve to confirm the findings of some of the other workers in this field, particularly the work of Nissen and Hoyt1 and of F. N. Guild2. Dr. S. G. Lasky3 has suggested a novel method for determining from a series of algebraic equations the amount of silver controlled by each of the base-metal minerals but I doubt very much whether his method can be justified, chiefly because there appear to be more variables to be considered than the few that appear in his equations. THE very extensive development of a brown coal formation, in the region of the Rocky Mountains, is well known to all of you. The existence of these coals was known years ago, but they were of no practical importance until within a few years, when the mineral wealth of that country began to be developed and railroads were built. As their qualities became better known, their adaptability to domestic manufacturing and metallurgical purposes was more appreciated. They are still much undervalued, although they are mined at some points on a very extensive scale.
