Rotation diffraction patterns of Cu-4.84 wt pct Si polymystalline samples were taken during the course of isothel-ma1 affing of the suPersaturated a phase, a diffraction spots were obserzled to streak during the initial stages of aging, and this streaking was similar to the streaking of a spots observed earlier by Barvett with deformed super saturated samples of the same composition. Although it was suggested that stacking faults were the sole cause of styeaking in the deformed samples, the present study has shown that plates with one small crystallite dimension can also contribute to the streaking when there is lattice coherency across close-packed planes. THE decomposition of the supersaturated a phase in Cu-Si alloys has been reported to occur by means of both thermal and stress activation.1-4 According to the Cu-Si phase diagram,3 Fig. 1, the supersaturated a phase (fcc) is expected to transform during aging by the precipitation of the y phase. The results of earlier studies2,4 have indicated that metastable k phase (hcp with nearly ideal close packing) forms initially at temperatures below the eutectoid temperature, after which the k transforms to the a and y phases. Hof-mann et al.4 have proposed a metastable version of the phase diagram, showing the approximate boundaries for k formation below the eutectoid temperature. In view of the close-packed nature of both the a and k phases, it is essential to consider the role assumed by stacking faults in the transformation. Streaking effects have been reported by Barrett 1 in the rotating crystal X-ray patterns of strained Cu-Si alloys and were attributed to stacking faults rather than particle size effects. This deduction was based on the observation that streaks in the diffraction patterns did not occur tangent to the 220fee Debye ring. It is known that the atom movements involved in faulting leave some X-ray reflections unaffected while others are broadened,' and, in particular, it has been shown that faulting will not cause streaking of 220fee reflections tangent to the 220fee Debye ring as would be expected if all the reflections were broadened.' Conclusions reached in a paper by weertmanl are amplified in a mathematical and graphical way. It is shown that in a stressed crystal a straight dis-location may be in a position of unstable equilibrium with respect to helix development, and how a small perturbation may start the dislocation off on its helical path. Helix development occurs by diffision; bulk diffusion is necessary for development from a screw, but core diffision is sufficient for development from an edge dislocation. For a mixed dislocation helix development can take place by core diffusion if the helix also climbs; a diffusion reversal takes place when the slope of the helix equals the slope of the Burgers vector. The work done on a crystal by the external forces is graphically shown to be consistent with the direction of motion of the dislocation in helix development. Finally a detailed mechanism for tangle formation from helices is presented. In the course of helix development a glide situation may be reached where a segment of each helix loop lies in a slip plane in which it can expand by glide. Thus is it visualized how a helix can deteriorate into a tangle. A paper by weertmanl proposes dislocation-tangle formation by a helical dislocation mechanism. The present paper amplifies Weertman's arguments in a mathematical and graphical way and presents some further ramifications of the proposed model. The importance of dislocation tangles is discussed in Weertman's paper and the references cited therein. The mechanism of their formation is not yet understood. Weertman proposes that in cold-worked crystals conditions exist suitable for the conversion of straight dislocations into helices and subsequently into tangles. Helix formation occurs by a diffusion process and Weertman proposes that at low temperatures only core diffusion is important. The present paper necessarily repeats some of Weertman's work. Since the mathematical development and notation used are slightly different from his, this was thought necessary for clarity. GEOMETRY OF THE HELIX weertman2 has shown that the equilibrium form of any dislocation line is a helix if it is assumed that the energy per unit length (line tension) of the dis- location is constant. For the special case that no external forces act on the dislocation, the helix reduces to a straight line. We shall assume in this paper that the dislocation has a helical form even when it is not in equilibrium. The parametric equation of a helix is, see Fig. l: where a is the radius of the cylinder tangent to the helix, and 270 the pitch of the helix. The pitch is related to v, the number of turns per unit length (along the axis) by the relation: When a = 0 Eq. [I] gives a straight line in the z direction. The growth of a straight dislocation into a helix is now described mathematically by letting a vary from zero to its final value. The tangent to the helix is given by where is the path length along the helix. This gives the direction of t and since its magnitude is unity we must have So that dcp/ds = (a2 +p2)-"'. STRATEGICALLY situated in almost the heart of the leading fertilizer- consuming area of the United States, Tennessee long has ranked second only to Florida as a phosphate-producing state. Since 1932 its share of the national output of phosphate rock has increased steadily, and in 1937 its production mounted to an all-time record. More significant even than the increase in tonnage are the forward strides in technology. The Tennessee Valley Authority's research program has led to quasicommercial operations using hydroelectric power to manufacture concentrated phosphatic fertilizer that is used to further the farmer education program designed to streamline the fertilizer business and halt the appalling waste of farm land by soil erosion. Even more stimulating to chemically minded imaginations is the production of elemental phosphorus by a private company that not only has succeeded in extracting it from the phosphate rock in electric furnaces but actually has contrived to capture it and to transport it safely in tank cars. New values have been created for low-grade phosphate deposits, and the economic life of reserves has been lengthened while the waste of former years goes back into the mills for recovery of its values by modernized methods. Tennessee's phosphate-mining industry dates from the discovery of blue rock in-lewis County in December 1893. Its known reserves are of the order of 101,500,000 tons, which compares with the production of 825,099 tons in 1937; that is, 21 per cent of the phosphate-rock output of the whole nation. The total output reported from 1894 until July 1, 1938, was approximately 19,000,000 tons. Official estimates of reserves are overly conservative and evidence submitted before a joint Congressional committee in November 1938 places "probable" reserves at more than 6,000,000,000 tons.

Feldspars, the most abundant minerals of the igneous rocks, occur in numerous forms and mixtures. The feldspars of commercial significance are found in widely distributed pegmatites as large crystals usually free of iron-bearing impurities and thus suitable for hand-cobbing, and also in larger bodies where the ore contains various types of feldspar intermingled with quartz and relatively free of iron-bearing impurities, or at least readily unlocked from impurities present at relatively coarse mesh. The latter type of ore includes some pegmatites, and the "alaskite" bodies so common in the Spruce Pine district of North Carolina. On the west coast of the US and in Oklahoma there is-or has been-commercial recovery of natural feldspathic sand as a source of alumina in glass and ceramics. "Aplite" in commercial terminology is a light-colored igneous rock with a granitic composition and a fine sugary texture, often banded with readily removable iron impurities. Only one area in Virginia produces aplite for the glass industry; it is located near Montpelier in Hanover County. According to Deer et al. (1966) the word feldspar derives from the Swedish feldt or jolt (field) and "spath:" chunks of rock appearing in tilled ground overlying granite. Castle and Gillson (1960) indicate a Germanic origin, citing "spat," which is said to refer to any transparent or translucent material which is readily cleavable. The term "spar" has in the past been applied to minerals other than feldspar, such as barite, calcite, and fluorite. It is correct to call the latter "fluorspar." There is a true barium feldspar, but it is rare and of no present economic importance. What is recognized as feldspar or "spar" by present producers and consumers consists of three silicate minerals which, if pure, would have the formulas KA1Si3O8 (microcline or orthoclase), NaAlSi3O8 (albite), and CaAl2Si2O8 (anorthite). These are almost never found in pure form in nature, but occur together in great abundance in a three-component system. A considerable number of different combined ratios of these three exists, with the exception that isomorphism between potassium spar and calcium spar is very limited. User specifications for feldspar products are largely built around the prevalent naturally occurring ratios. Passages following will refer to "K-spar," "Naspar," or "Ca-spar." Nomenclature and Descriptive Terms Relating to both the mineralogy and the economics of feldspar are certain terms whose coverage it is useful to specify. Commercially, aplite is a feldspathic rock mined and beneficiated in one location in Virginia, in which both titanium and feldspar minerals are present-the latter now being the major, if not the only, economic product. Technically, the term aplite when applied to this rock is of questionable accuracy. But, in light of accepted commercial usage, the term will be here used to designate it. Regarding the Virginia rock, Ross (1941) is cited. Alaskite is another term requiring understanding if not precise use. A distinctive rock type customarily called by this name is found near Spruce Pine, Mitchell County, North Carolina. An important major feldspar source, it contains somewhat higher levels of plagioclase feldspar and quartz than alaskite as defined in the Glossary of Geology and Related Sciences, which states that `orthoclase, microcline, and subordinate quartz are the principal

Any city dweller who has walked alone along a remote mine passageway has to be impressed by the eerie silence-the total absence of noise except for one's own breathing and scuffing of boots on the bottom. An underpound mine can have tremendous contrasts, from complete silence to the ear piercing clatter of percussion drills working in the mine roof. Noise in underground mining machines is both useful and detrimental. Without characteristic noises that are recognizable to miners, operators would have a more difficult job operating their machines. Noise serves as a warning of approaching machinery, and changes in noise give indication that breakdowns may occur. But excessive noise is a health hazard. In recognition of this fact, our congress included noise exposure as a part of the "Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969." As [Fig. 1] indicates, allowable noise exposure is established by specifying a time duration permitted at different noise levels. This is the well known "Walsh-Healey" criteria which govern noise exposure in many industries. In most industries noise exposure is not a constant value. Noise emitted from coal mining machinery varies widely, and therefore interpretation of compliance is not a simple matter. Time, environment, instrumentation and machine productivity, as well as the designed machine characteristics affect the results. It is the purpose of this paper to present the underground coal face machinery noise problem from a manufacturer's point of view. Manufacturers are very much aware of their responsibility to alleviate the noise problem. Not infrequently, orders are received from coal operators that a given new machine must comply with "The Coal Mine Health & Safety Act" noise regulations. Such a request is indicative of the misunderstanding which exists with machine users, while indicating their desire to comply with the law. Obviously, if all machinery could be designed and used at some arbitrary low noise level, it would be possible to simplify the regulations. However, there still remains the pervasive problem of existing machines. Extensive investigation to create practical retrofit kits for existing machines, to substantially reduce noise have been only marginally successful. Certain machine mechanisms are inherent noise makers. The only really good solution is to substitute a quieter mechanism. Such overall new designs have been undertaken, and several examples are mentioned later in this paper. Before describing machine noise problems, it is necessary to define noise values. Noise levels are measured in decibels. The designation "DBA" is decibels measured on the "A" scale, or one in which the frequency sensitivity of the instrumentation is about the same as the human ear. The numbers are often misinterpreted because it is a logarithmic, rather than an arithmetic scale. In comprehending the numbers, it should be remembered that any increase of 3 dB doubles the sound power. In practical terms this means that two noises of equal power at the same distance away increases a dB reading by three. Although the interierometric method for the determination of length changes was devised by Fizeau more than three quarters of a century ago, it has not achieved the widespread use in the metallurgical field that its precision and simplicity would seem to warrant. The interferometer and the basic principle are both very simple. When optically plane surfaces held at a very slight angle to each other are illuminated by monochromatic light, rectilinear, equally spaced interference fringes arc formed. Each fringe corresponds to a defiuitc thikness of the wedge formed by the optical flat.;. The difference in wedge thickness between two consecutive fringes is cqual to one half the wave length of the illuminating light. Instruments for vicwing the intertero~ncter have passed through a number of modifications. Outstanding among the improvements were those Abbe. in 1884. His improved instrument permitted micrometric mcasurements to the order of one-hundredth of the width of an interference fringe (i.e., lengths were measured to the order of one two-hulldredth of the mave length of light ). It also permitted the consecutive use of light of several wave lengths. which made possible the determination of the order number of any fringe and therefore the absolute thickness of the wedge at any point. The Abbe dilatometer and methods of measuretment, including corrections to he applied for the change of index of refraction with change in tempcrature and barometric pressure in an air wedge, have been thoroughly described by Pulfrich.' Pulfrich2 made further improvements in the interference measuring apparatus. His instrument embodied all the features of the Abbe dilatometer but was made more versatile by its complete mechanical separation from the interferorneter. The introduction of an Amici prism in the piece permitted the simultaneous observ tion of the whole set of fringe systems developed in the interferometer from the visible light of a geisler tulle. .Also, the introduction of a direct-vision, reflecting prism made it possible to set the fringes parallel to the two vertical fiducial line. of the instrument without the necessity of rotating the interierometcr. Interferometric methods employed ill this country have been developed and dcscribed by Priest, Pelers and Cragoe," Austin,5 Merritt,= Saunders,? and Nix and MaNair. Since none of these authors used the type of instrument that was employed in the present investigation, they Will not be discussed here. This paper will be limited to the description of the interfernmetric apparatus and method used at the Aluminum Research Laboratories and to the presentation of data so obtained. THE binary aluminum-silicon alloys have certain characteristic advantages which are now well known, and these alloys have come into considerable use during the past several years.1 Their field of application has been limited to a certain extent, however, by their low yield point and hardness, low endurance limit, and relatively poor machining characteristics. These properties are improved by the addition of copper, and the ternary aluminum-silicon-copper alloys constitute an important class. The addition of copper decreases the corrosion resistance of the aluminum-silicon alloys and increases specific gravity. Magnesium is a hardening addition which seems to have relatively little effect on corrosion resistance, and which, of course, reduces specific gravity. The object of the work described in this paper was the development of alloys and heat treatments for the production of sand castings and permanent-mold castings having substantially all the advantages of the binary aluminum-silicon alloys together with mechanical properties improved to a degree permitting wider application.

The oil production performance of thin-oil-column type reservoirs producing entirely by natural water drive are discussed in this paper. The dimensionless production histories were obtained in a series of scaled porous-medium laboratory-model tests under varying effects of rate of production, mobility ratio across moving boundary, ratio of oil- and water-sand thickness and mobility ratio across fixed boundary including the effects of different residual oil saturations in the water-invaded regions. This scaled-model study of thin oil columns indicated that greater recovery of oil results for lower values of the following: rate of production, mobility ratio across the moving boundary, water-sand thickness relative to the oil-sand thickness, and mobility ratio across the fixed boundary or residual oil saturation in the water-invaded region of oil sand The results of the study are given as dimensionless production history plots which may be used to predict the performance of the field they represent. INTRODUCTION Oil fields producing under natural water drive can be classified into two major groups: (1) an "edge-water drive" reservoir group in which the water is encroaching from the reservoir periphery, and (2) the group of reservoirs in which the oil-sand is entirely underlain by an aquifer. Reservoirs in the second group are further subclassified as "bottom-water drive" reservoirs and "thin-oil-column" reservoirs. The latter reservoirs are characterized by their relatively equal oil- and water-sand thicknesses and by having both the oil and water zone relatively thin. When oil is produced from a water-drive reservoir by a partially penetrating well, water breaks through sooner or later before all of the displace-able oil is recovered. Many analyses of this general situation have been made with varying degrees of realism in their approaches, both theoretical and experimental5.6 in nature. Pertaining to the scaled laboratory model studies of natural water drives using porous media, detailed investigations have been made by Henley, et al.7 on bottom-water drive and by Caudle8 on edge-water drive reservoirs. No laboratory model studies, however, have been made to investigate the performance characteristics of thin-oil-column reservoirs. This paper presents the results of a study on scaled models of thin-oil-column reservoirs, operated under varying conditions corresponding to the actual field practices. SCALING PARAMETERS The object of scaling is to produce a one-to-one relationship between physical and dynamic parameters of the model -and prototype. The most comprehensive treatment of scaling techniques for oil reservoirs is given by Geertsma, et a1.,9 which covers two methods for arriving at dimensionless groups for scaling. Table 1 lists the scaling parameters suitable for creating kinematic and dynamic similarities between the model and the prototype in the variables considered for the thin-oil-column reservoirs. In order to achieve similarity it is essential that the dimensionless groups listed in Table 1 have equal values in the model and the protorype simulated. WITH the movement of American capital into foreign investment, a new field of specialization for the American mining engineer is gradually opening a field hitherto entered almost wholly by chance and without full appreciation of its possibilities. Our age has been fitly called the "Age of Specialization." The special application of one's knowledge and ability to a definite and restricted branch of .his profession is purely a modern condition. Any profession, or branch of a profession or, industry, in which the problems may be segregated into definite types, calls for specializa-tion. Modern industry demands efficiency and that, reduction and ultimate annihilation of waste. Effort and time wasted by workers' on a problem with which they are not familiar is as flagrant a waste of money -the final standard-as any waste of materials. One of the subdivisions of mining engineering which is beginning to be recognized is of engineers who are clearly conversant with the particular and peculiar problems obtaining under foreign operating conditions. The need is as yet obscured, however, by the domestic prosperity of our American mining industry. The opportunity here lies more with the American engineer than with other nationals. The foreign en-gineer now in that service is not there through a realiza-tion of the special opportunities that exist, but through necessity, whereas, with the American engineer, more especially ,the recent graduate or those who will soon graduate, this is a new field to be entered wholly by choice. As a matter of fact, many engineering students will find it necessary to seek foreign service if they wish to remain in mining. Although the scope of the domes-tic industry is tremendous and there are many positions open to the junior engineer, there are not enough for the great number of graduates turned out yearly from our, mining schools. Educators tell us that less than 40 per cent. of the students in engineering schools gradu-ate; and of these but a minority continue in engineering. Even this minority is too great for our domestic. In-dustry, and although the young engineer realizes that condition after a few years he rarely seeks foreign work. A. perusal of the directory of the American Institute of Mining Engineers indicates that, but about one-half of one per cent of the Junior Associates are in positions outside of North America. Granting that most of them are still in school, the figure is surpris-ingly small.

THE property of the United Comstock Mines Co. lies in the eastern foot-hills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains, in the Washoe mining district of Storey County, Nev. Commencing at the boundary line between Virginia City and Gold Hill, covering all the town of Gold Hill, it extends south to American Flat; the main camp, or the new town of Comstock, the mills, shops, residences of employees, and the main haulage-tunnel portal are located on American Flat. The property extends for about 10,300 ft. along the lode; this covers the southern end of the main Comstock lode, the Knickerbocker branch, and the junction of the Silver City branch with the Comstock lode. Within the property, 5000 ft. of the main Comstock lode is known to have been productive, 1000 ft. of the lode at the northern end of the property is thoroughly developed, and 1000 ft. south of this is partly developed; this leaves about 3000 ft. of the known productive portion that has not been opened up by this company. The northern end of the property, or the Imperial mine, has been intricately developed by five main levels and numerous sublevels. The Yellow Jacket ground to the south has been partly developed by the reopening of three old levels. In addition, the main haulage level is driven from the portal at Comstock for 9250 ft., to the north end of the property; about 5500 ft. of this `is in the foot wall of the lode and parallel to it.

INTRODUCTION MINERAL deposits that have formed by the various geologic processes, when exposed to air and water at or near the surface of the earth, break down and form new compounds that are stable under surface conditions. Mechanical disintegration of the ores proceeds along with chemical alteration which generally is attended by oxidation, carbonation and hydration. Essentially all minerals are affected-silicates, carbonates, native metals, sulphides, etc. Where iron sulphides are present, oxidation yields sulphuric acid, and in the presence of oxygen and iron, ferric sulphate, a powerful solvent, is formed. Above the water level, in the vadose or shallow zone, both air and water are present. Below the water level air is excluded and that which is carried down with water is removed from the solution by reactions with reducing materials. Above the water level, solution is the pre-dominating process; below the water level, precipitation generally is equally important. In some deposits, particularly above the hater level, valueless materials are removed from the ore, leaving certain metals in a more highly concentrated state. This type of alteration, which has been termed negative enrichment, is common in ores of iron, aluminum, manganese and certain other metals. Some gold deposits, particularly those in which the environment is unfavorable for solution of gold, have been enriched near the surface by removal of material other than gold. Certain metals are readily dissolved in an oxidizing acid environment. These include copper, silver and, under certain conditions, gold. In the presence of iron sulphides, deposits of these metals are likely to be leached above the water level. The metals are carried downward to depths where air is excluded, and where they may be redeposited, generally below the water level. Such enrichment by addition of metals has been termed positive enrichment.

THE economics of aerial survey and the technical processes by the aid of which vertical and oblique aerial photographs are turned into line maps showing the most profuse topographical detail such as contours, rivers, roads, plantations, habitations and cultivated lands do not concern us here. They have been ably and exhaustively described in the publi-cations of the British War Office, handbooks on surveying methods and on photogrammetry and in the South African mining, engineering and geological press. Suffice it to mention that for geological interpretation vertical photo-graphs are used on such scales as soon to 1/5,000 to 1/10,000, overlapping each other by 55 to 60 per cent in the direction of flight and some 10 to 20 per cent sideways on to the next sequence or strip. Through this duplication in the overlap the stereoscopic examination becomes possible. The standards by which monochrome aerial photographs are inter-preted can be grouped under the following headings: 1. Continuity.-The continuity of topographic relief not obtainable on the ground owing to the smallness of man relative to that relief. Here lies the greatest value of aerial survey with relation to geology. An immediate alignment can often be made of drainages running in different directions on each side of a hill; saddles and gorges in the mountainsides; abrupt termination of outcrop or indubitable signs of faulting. Most conclusive evidence is thus often obtained about faults which may be perfectly visible at one place on the ground but cannot elsewhere be identified because of decreased throw. Similarly, dikes can often be followed notwithstanding frequent interruption and disappearance under the soil. Scattered outcrop in scrub-covered or bush-covered country can be conveniently located and often correlated, with a large saving of time compared with field work. The same applies to geological contacts. Once these have been established at a few points on the ground, the intervening stretches can be drawn in.

THE investigations of Wyman1 have demonstrated that copper deoxidized with several of the commonly used agents that confer immunity to ordinary hydrogen em-brittlement can still be embrittled if it is annealed alternately under oxidizing and reducing conditions. During the oxidizing cycle, oxygen diffuses into the copper and frequently deposits a subscale composed of the oxide of the residual deoxidizing agent. Upon subsequent reduction with hot hydro-gen, the copper becomes ruptured along the grain boundaries to a depth sharply limited by the previous penetration of oxy-gen as delineated by the inner boundary of the subscale. Obviously the sensitivity to this kind of hydrogen embrittlement is engendered by the introduction of oxygen during the oxi-dizing anneal, but beyond this the mecha-nism of the process, and hence the controlling factors, remain obscure. There are several possibilities: (I) oxygen dissolved in the copper matrix of the subscale may, upon cooling prior to the hydrogen anneal, precipitate as cuprous oxide which is subse-quently reduced by hydrogen as in the familiar case of hydrogen embrittlement; (2) oxygen in solid solution in copper may itself confer susceptibility to embrittlement by hydrogen; (3) the normally refractory oxides such as those of aluminum, silicon and titanium may themselves he reduced by hydrogen when in contact with copper; or (4) the precipitated oxides of the sub-scale may be complex compounds such, perhaps, as Si02-Cu20, which are partially reduced by hydrogen. These possibilities have been examined, and it has been con-cluded that the first three and possibly the fourth are operative collectively or indi-vidually under more or less predictable conditions.

June was the month in which AIME was founded in the year of 1871. For some reason, February was selected as the month for the legal Annual Meeting. One can't help thinking wistfully of Annual Meetings in June but of course this is not the reality. Because the Centennial Ceremonies are taking place in February, that month has been chosen as the one in which MINING ENGINEERING, the monthly magazine of the Society of Mining Engineers, a constituent society of AIME, is publishing its Commemorative is- sue to celebrate the event. SME and ME take a proprietary air about AIME. This is mostly because AIME started as the American Institute of Mining Engineers. Metallurgy was added to the name in 1919 and Petroleum in 1956. The official abbreviation of "AIME" has been retained, however.

TWO metallurgical tools have acquired wide use within the past several years as a means of studying the transformation characteristics of steel. One is a technique used first by Bain and Davenport for determining the transformation characteristics of a steel at constant temperature; the second is the end-quench hardenability test. Constant-temperature transformation curves like those of Bain and Davenport have done much to rationalize the metallography of steel; however, in commercial practices, constant-temperature transformation is seldom encountered, therefore only rarely can such curves be directly applied. The real reason for the determination of such curves lies in the fact that they provide a way of thinking about transformation that is both convenient and productive. The end-quench hardenability test is a more practical means of studying transformation, for, by correlating positions on the hardenability bar with shapes of different masses, an almost direct application of the results can be made. Unfortunately, the end-quench test, though practical, can do very little toward improving the metallurgists' way of thinking about transformation. These two metallurgical tools, dealing with precisely the same phenomenon, should be very closely associated in metallurgists' minds. Actually, they are frequently pushed into separate mental corners and considered as being more or less distinct and unrelated. The reason for this is that no strong connecting link between them has been developed. An attempt is sometimes made to relate these two tools by projecting the critical cooling rate on the isothermal transformation plot as illustrated in Fig. I. The critical cooling rate is considered as a constant rate-though in practical applications, cooling rates are never constant—and this constant cooling rate is given uniform significance from the Ae temperature down to the temperature of initial transformation. A little thought indicates the errors of such a procedure. Certainly the time interval spent just below point A of Fig. I cannot be as effective in promoting nucleation as is the time interval spent just above point B. Yet the procedure represented in Fig. I considers all the time spent between temperatures A and B to be just as effective in promoting nucleation as though all the time were spent at temperature B. Furthermore, change the shape of the isothermal curve between points B and C in any way desired, and the required critical cooling rate is not changed one iota. This cannot possibly be true. Such a way of thinking about critical cooling rates not only is incapable of giving any results that are quantitatively satisfactory but is likely to give very misleading qualitative results.

EFFective sand permeabilities can be ascertained from core analysis if the laboratory data are compensated to allow for the presence of connate or residual water. Such adjustments can be made by applying empirically derived correction factors. Effective sand permeabilities can be estimated also from analytical studies of field depth-pressure measurements. In one method the time rate of pressure build-up after a well is shut in from steady-state flow is required, and in the other the direct measurement of a steady-state rate of flow and the corresponding equilibrium pressure. The results of the investigation discussed in this paper demonstrate that these methods for determining mean effective sand permeabilities can be correlated. Introduction In recent years many investigators have demonstrated the practical value of an accurate knowledge of the physical and dynamical characteristics of reservoir sands containing oil and gas. Of these factors, which serve to completely define a porous medium as a container or carrier of fluids, the dynamical characteristics are of particular interest to the production engineer because they afford a direct measure of the rate at which the oil or gas content of a reservoir will become available. The constant that defines dynamically the porous medium as the carrier of a homogeneous fluid in viscous motion is the "permeability." Coke-analysis Method The generally accepted practice in com-piling permeability data has been to analyze in the laboratory core samples taken in the course of drilling through the productive horizon, and to obtain the mean measure of the productive ability or permeability for the interval open to production by graphical integration of the permeability profile. An average permeability ascertained in this manner, however, is useful to the production engineer only for comparisons of wells drilled in the same horizon, as permeabilities determined in the laboratory are measures of only the ability of a porous medium to transmit a single fluid. As a result of many investigations, it has been shown, however, that under actual reservoir conditions water is coexistent with the petroleum and that its presence greatly reduces the permeability of the sand to oil. Empirical relationships showing the effect of the presence of any immiscible fluid A (such as water) in a porous medium on the permeability of the medium to a fluid B (such as oil) have been established separately by Hassler,1 Dunlap,2 and the writer (Fig. I),3 so that the average specific or dry-core permeability as determined in the laboratory can be corrected to give the true measure of the ability of the horizon penetrated to transmit oil, provided the percentage of pore space occupied by connate water is known accurately.

There have been many attempts to prove that platinum was known to the ancients, but since no traces of the metal have been found in the relics of early times, it must be concluded that it was not known to them. As far as records go, it was actually first discovered in the 16th century in a Spanish mine on the Pinto River in South America; from which source it received its name of Platina del Pinto (little silver from the Pinto). It was more or less of a rarity and was a subject of interest to a few chemists only, until the year 1822 when the metal was first discovered in Russia. In 1819 there were noticed in the washings of the gold sands of the southern part of the Ural Mountains, grains of a heavy white substance, but it was not until three years later that this substance was found to contain platinum. While at first the amounts of platinum brought from the Urals were meager, prospecting soon disclosed rich deposits extending over a considerable area, and nuggets from 10 to 20 lb. were by no means rare. This discovery assured to chemists an ample supply of platinum for their crucibles, etc. The ore is now found in various parts of the world but the richest deposits are still found in the Ural Mountains. The platinum of commerce is obtained entirely from alluvial deposits at depths varying from 6 to 40 ft. The sand and gravel of former river beds are subjected to a series of screenings and washings to effect the separation of the ore. Actually, probably all gold-bearing gravel beds of the world contain platinum, and it is more than likely that large quantities of platinum ore have been thrown away with the black sand washings from gold placer deposits. This is especially true of the alluvial deposits of the Pacific Coast in California and Oregon. Platinum ore is usually found in the form of rounded or flattened grains of "sand," and occasionally in irregular lumps of the size of peas. Large nuggets are very rare. The ore has a metallic luster and is distinguished by its steel gray color, but shows light gray streak when rubbed on a hard white surface; it has a high specific gravity, 16 to 19; is infusible in the hottest blast furnaces, and insoluble in any single acid. Platinum ore is a complex body consisting of the metal in combination with varying proportions of the other members of the platinum group; iridium,

BETWEEN the third and twentieth days of November, 1903, six intensely interesting letters were mailed from Santiago, Chile, addressed to "Mr. William Braden, Consulting Mining Engineer, 71 Broadway, New York City." The subject of these communications, referred to as the "Rancagua mines," was a copper property situated in the high. Andes; and the writer was Marco Chiapponi, an Italian mining engineer. Many a letter has been written about potential mines and prospects, good and bad, situated in all parts of the world; but few of them combine the shrewdness, sincerity, naïveté, and salesmanship that appear in these fascinating letters by Chiapponi. In 1894, Mr. Braden, as a young man twenty-three years old, had gone to Santiago to look after the erection and operation of some mining machinery that was to be exhibited at the International Mining Exposition. Not the least important of his purposes was to get acquainted at first hand with the mines and mining men of Chile, which ranked at the time (as it does today) second to the United States as a copper-producing country. It happened that a dispute arose regarding charges for certain construction work done in connection with young Braden's exhibit. Finally, arbitration was agreed upon and the Chilean exposition officials proposed Se[n]or Marco Chiapponi as a fair-minded neutral to decide the question. This he did in a manner satisfactory to both sides, and subsequently he and Mr. Braden became good friends. Nine years later Braden wrote to Chiapponi inquiring as to certain matters connected with the Corocoro copper mines in Bolivia. It was to this letter that Chiapponi refers in his letter of November 3, from which the following are some extracts,
