VALUATION of a mine is an approximation of its true cash value which requires the application of fundamental principles of economics. Mines are valued from necessity, for the following reasons: (a) Transfers of titles. (b) Dissolutions of partnerships or corporations. (c) Mergers of mining companies. (d) Appraisals for the purpose of State and Federal taxation. (e) Establishment of the fact of worth as a basis of loans. (f) Determination of values as frequently required in litigation. (g) Listing of stock for sale by a reputable stock exchange. For the majority of purposes a valuation is required as at the present time, but for some purposes valuations as of bygone times may more nearly reflect the intrinsic worth of a mine because its subsequent history can never be, entirely ignored, but valuations made as at the present time are better indicators of cash values. Many mines with great intrinsic worth have been sold for small cash prices. The object of legitimate mine valuations is to deter-mine salable value, or that price in cash at which a transfer of the property from a willing seller to a willing buyer might be consummated, assuming that both vendor and vendee have knowledge of all pertinent data and that the owner, is not forced to sell at a sacri-fice-the definitions of fair market value precluding a forced sale.

A new mechanism of crystal growth involving oapor, liquid, crnd solid phases explains many observations of the effect of implurities in crystal growth from the vapor. The role of the impuuitq is to form a liquid Solution with the crystalline tnalerial to be grown from the vapor. Since the solution is n prefevred site for deposition firorti the uapor, the liquid becorrles supersaturated. Crystal growth occurs by precipitatzon from the supersaturated liquid crt tlie solid-liquid zntevfnce. A crystalline defect, such as a screw dislocation, is not essetztial for VLS (vapor -liquid-solid) growth. The concept of the VLS mechanism is discussed in detail with reference to tire controlled growth of silicon crystals using gold, platinum, palladium, nickel, silver, or copper as an implurity agent. RECENTLY a short communication' described a new concept of crystal growth from the vapor, the VLS mechanism. In this paper we present a detailed description of the process and its application to the growth of silicon crystals and we discuss its relevance to existing concepts of .'whisker" crystal growth. Crystal growth from the vapor is usually explained by a theory proposed by Frank2 and developed in detail by Burton, Cabrera, and Frank.3 In this theory a screw dislocation terminating at the growth surface provides a self-perpetuating step. Accommodation of atoms at the step is energetically favorable, and is possible of much lower supersatu-ration than required for two-dimensional nucleation. Crystals of a unique form resulting from aniso-tropic growth from the vapor are "whisker" or filamentary ones. Such crystals have a lengthwise dimension orders of magnitude larger than those of the cross section. For most filamentary crystals both the fast-growth direction and directions of lateral growth have small Miller indices. The special growth form for a whisker crystal implies that the tip surface of the crystal must be a preferred growth site. sears4 proposed that, according to the Frank theory. a whisker contains a screw dislocation emergent at the growing tip. Such an axial defect provides a preferred growth site and accounts for unidirectional growth. The hypothesis was extended by Price. Vermilyea. and Webb," still implying the presence of a dislocation at the whisker tip. They postulated that impurities arriving at the fast-growing tip face become buried while those arriving on the surface of slow-growing lateral faces accumulate and thereby hinder growth. These considerations led to a whisker morphology. There is increasing evidence that most whisker crystals grown from the vapor are dislocation-free. Webb and his coworkers6 searched for an Eshelby twist7 in zinc? cadmium, iron. copper, silver, and palladium whisker crystals. They found unequivocal evidence for an axial screw dislocation in only one element, palladium. However, not every palladium crystal examined contained a dislocation. Observations with the electron microscope have failed to show dislocations in whisker crystals of zinc, silicon.9 and one morphology of AlN.10 Since many whiskers are completely free of dislocations, an axial dislocation does not appear to be required for whisker growth of many substances. A significant advance in understanding whisker growth has been a recognition of the need for impurities. This requirement has been clearly demonstrated for copper,11 iron,13 and silicon9-1 whiskers. For silicon, detailed studies proved conclusively that certain impurities, for example, nickel or gold, are essential. Another pertinent phenomenon which has received little attention is the presence of a liquid layer or droplets on the surface of some crystals growing from the vapor. Crystals in which this has been observed include p-toluidine,14 MoO3,15 ferrites,16 and silicon carbide.'" The liquid layers or globules were considered to be metastable phases, molecular complexes, or intermediate polymers originating from condensation of the vapor phase. The possibility has been suggested that the halide being reduced is condensed at the tip18 or adsorbed on the surface11 of a growing metal whisker, for example copper. The literature on whiskers discloses illustrations of rounded terminations at the tips. These appear. for example, on crystals of A12O3,19,20 sic,21 and BeO.22 For BeO, Edwards and Happel suggested that during growth of the whisker the rounded termination consisted of molten beryllium enclosed in a solid shell of BeO. A recent paper9 on the growth of silicon whiskers contains many observations pertinent to an understanding of the mechanisnl of whisker growth. These observations are summarized as follows. 1) Silicon whiskers are dislocation-free. 2) Certain impurities are essential for whisker growth. Without such impurities the silicon deposit is in the form of a film or consists of discrete polyhedral crystals.

THE product obtained by roasting stibnite is likely to contain some unoxidized antimony trisulphide and a mixture of antimony trioxide and antimony tetroxide. It was desired to determine, as accurately as possible, the condition of the antimony as well as the total quantity present. Attempts were made to separate the trisulphide and the two oxides by methods based upon their varying solubilities in different solvents, but no satisfactory results were obtained in this way. It was found, however, that by determining the total antimony content, the antimony present as trioxide, and the antimony present as trisulphide, a good idea of the chemical composition of the roasted product could be obtained. The total antimony was determined by dissolving the sample in concentrated hydrochloric acid, reducing the antimony entirely to the trivalent condition by means of hydriodic acid and eventually titrating the antimony back to the pentavalent condition by means of iodine in the presence of sodium bicarbonate.' The details of the procedure are as follows: Weigh out 0.25 gram of the roasted product into a trapped flask (Fig. 1), add 4 grams of powdered tartaric acid, 2 grams of potassium iodide and 40 c.c. of concentrated hydrochloric acid. Boil the solution gently for 5 min. and then cool to room temperature by shaking the flask while holding it under running water. Then, very carefully discharge the iodine color by the cautious addition of 0.05-normal sodium thiosulphate solution, adding a little starch toward the last. A NEW method of treating steel by ammonia has recently been intro¬duced into the metallurgical industry, by means of which piston cylinders of internal combustion engines, shafts and other similar steel products can be made more resistant to wear than formerly. In 1929 the writer' published the historical notes and some experiments upon nitrification. He believes that the corrosion of nitrified steel is a matter of importance and worth studying; and as there have been few studies thereof, he has conducted experiments in this respect. L. Guillet,2 in 1927, reported corrosion tests made on nitrified and cemented steels with acid and salt solutions. In 1928, 0. Hengstenberg3 reported the high resistance of nitrified steel to water vapor and air. V. 0. Homerberg4 stated that nitrified steel has high resistance to water, air and salt solution; and G. Hagg5 studied nitrified layers of iron by means of the X-ray. Though F. Hanaman6 in 1913, measured the single potential difference of steel treated with ammonia at above 650° C., no one, it seems, has ever measured the single potential difference of the so-called nitrified steels having extraordinary hardness. The writer measured the single potential differences of nitrified special steels in various solutions with the object of studying the corrosion problem and, if possible, of knowing whether any new physical property would be caused by nitrification.

Oil and gas development in Louisiana during 1935 brought this state at the close of the year up to fourth place in the nation as a producing area. A review of development in North Louisiana centers around Rodessa, the most important reserve discovered in this area in many years. While the producing limits have not been defined, this discovery is one of the major developments of the year. New gas fields were discovered in Lincoln, De Soto and Bossier parishes. The Lincoln Parish discovery, completed flowing a highly saturated gas from the Glen Rose, further indicates the importance of deep-seated prospects in the interior salt-dome area. Minor extensions were made at Sligo and Pine Island. During the year, 126 oil wells and 103 gas wells were completed in North Louisiana as compared with 144 oil wells and 68 gas wells during 1934. The North Louisiana oil production was 9,617,405 bbl. as com-pared with 9,274,050 bbl. during 1934, an increase of 343,355 bbl., while the gas production increased 18 billion cu. ft. in 1935 over its 1934 figure. The Louisiana Department of Conservation gage of Nov. 1, 1935, shows an open-flow capacity of 4,563,725,000 cu. ft. per day from 941 wells in the Monroe field and 682,770,000 cu. ft. from 159 wells in the Rich-land field. A great deal of leasing continues in North Louisiana as a result of the Lincoln Parish discovery and development in the Rodessa field, especially in Bossier, De Soto, Winn, Lincoln, Bienville, Webster, Ouachita and Richland parishes. South Louisiana's position as an area of important reserves was further proved during the past year. Increased drilling resulted in the discovery of seven new fields: Lafitte, Garden Island Bay, Tepetate, Bunkie, St. Martinsville, Jeanerette and Big Lake. New sands or producing horizons proved productive in 15 of the proven fields. The total oil production for South Louisiana during 1935 was 40,731,-056 bbl. as compared with 23,255,437 bbl. during 1934. The effects of testing temperature, frorn 77" to 420" K, and volume fraction of martensite on the micro-plastic response of unaged Fe-31Ni martensite-austenite aggregates have been determined. The kinetics of the aging phenomena which lead to a decrease in the microplastic response were also characterized. These determinations, supplemented by other experimental results, show that at least two mechanisms of plastic deformation give rise to the apparent softness of the quenched structures. Only one of these mechanisms is fully discussed in this paper The transformation of retained austenite to martensite during the application of stress leads, in specified conditions, to large microplastic strains. This deformation behavior cannot be described by normal transformation plasticity theory but is shown to result from the fact that stress-assisted formation of martensite is a possible deformation mode. The present results and further considerations of previous work lead to the conclusion that it is unnecessary to postulate a special work-hardening mechanism to explain the mechanical properties of unaged martensite. It is now generally accepted that dislocation motion can occur in many solids at stresses very much below the L'macroscpic" yield stress, e.g., 0.1 pct offset. This phenomenon has been investigated by a variety of techniques including measurements of elastic limit,' effective static elastic modulus,~ and irreversible deformation following stressing at low levels.3"5 Of particular interest to the work to be described are exper -iments conducted on the deformation of martensite in attempts to decide whether freshly quenched ferrous martensites are "hard" or "soft".6 Muir, Averbach, and cohenl and McEvily, Ku, and ~ohnston' have shown that as-quenched ferrous rnartensites can be plastically deformed at relatively low stresses. A difference between these two sets of experiments exists in that some diffusion of carbon would take place before testing in the experiments of Muir et a1. because the plain Fe-C alloys which they have tested transform to martensite well above room temperature. McEvily et a1. examined Fe-Ni-C alloys with Ms of about -30"~ and tested the alloys directly after quenching to — 195" ~ —a technique which obviates any appreciable carbon diffusion. Unfortunately, a characteristic of the alloys which transform below room temperature is that they do not transform entirely to martensite. The results discussed below will show that, because the transformation of this retained austenite under stress leads to plastic deformation, one cannot investigate the properties of martensite by such experiments. The existence of a second deformation phenomenon, which is not caused by retained austenite, is also established in the present work. In line with a previous suggestion,' it is believed that the second microdefor-mation mode is principally due to the internal stresses generated by the formation of martensite. To avoid confusion in the present report, the evidence we have found for this interpretation will be discussed separately in a brief note.7 EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The alloys were induction-melted and cast under vacuum; the resulting compositions are given in Table I. The ingots were hot-swaged to 2-in.-diam bar and further cold-swaged and/or cold-rolled prior to specimen preparation. The standard tensile specimens were machined from sheet. The gage section was 0.05 by 0.2 by 5 in.; 0.75-in.-wide ends had 0.2 5-in. centered holes for pinloading. The three-point bend samples were 0.075-in. thick and 0.6 in. bide. The distance between the outer loading points was 5.5 in. In order to establish a standard starting condition, all specimens were quenched to 77°K prior to annealing in vacuo for austenitizing. The temperature of the austenitizing anneal was controlled to + 5"~. The testing and aging temperatures were maintained by various liquid baths (nitrogen, 77"~; freon, 130° to 200°K; acetone, 200 to 300°K; silicone oil, 300' to 450°K) to better than il°K. Strain Measurement. The results herein were derived from both uniaxial tension and three-point bending experiments. For bending tests, the stresses and strains reported are those corresponding to the maximum fiber values. Normally, because of the small strains involved, very sensitive strain measurements are necessary to make microplastic measurements. However, because of the magnitude of the dilatation and shear involved in the martensitic transformation, the requirements in the present experiments proved to be less rigorous. THE coal hydrogenation process is well known as a means for the production of liquid fuels -from coal. In this paper the possibilities of the coal hydrogenation process as a source of chemical raw materials will be discussed. The recovery of chemicals from coal hydrogenation products necessitates some modifications and additions to the equipment used for the production of fuels. The conversion of coal into liquid fuels such as gasoline requires two steps: liquid phase and vapor phase hydrogenation. Intermediate oils obtained in the liquid phase contain oxygen and nitrogen compounds, especially aromatic compounds, since the coal itself is composed mainly of cyclic compounds. These oils are the raw material for the separation of high molecular weight aromatics and of tar acids and tar bases. The relative amounts of heavy and middle oil-boiling above and below, e.g., 325°C-can be influenced by temperature, residence time, and catalyst of the liquid phase hydrogenation. In the vapor phase hydrogenation a solid bed catalyst is used to convert the intermediate oil from the liquid phase operation into hydrocarbons of the gasoline boiling range. Essentially pure hydrocarbons with a low content of sulphur, oxygen, nitrogen, and olefines are obtained. Depending mainly on the catalyst, the high ring compound content of the liquid phase oil can be preserved and gasoline rich in aromatics obtained. However, with other catalysts, these ring compounds can be split into gasoline with a high content of isoparaffins.1 Again, depending on the operating conditions, products of varying boiling range can be obtained. Selection of catalyst and operating conditions therefore makes possible the production of different grades of motor fuel and also variations in the relative amounts of benzene, toluene, and xylene when aromatic hydrocarbons are produced. The schematic flowsheet, Fig. 1, shows the main steps of the coal hydrogenation process, and the product streams used for the recovery of chemicals are indicated. In the liquid phase hydrogenation stage, coal is made into a paste with recycle heavy oil. The coal paste is mixed with hydrogen and preheated at a pressure of 300 to 700 atm in heat exchangers and preheaters. The coal paste and hydro¬gen enter high pressure converters where the liquefaction of coal, conversion of the high boiling liquid materials initially obtained, into intermediate oils is performed at a temperature around 470°C. The reaction products enter the hot catchpot in which lower boiling oil vapors are separated from the residue containing unreacted coal, ash, and heavy oil. This residue, usually called H.O.L.D. (heavy oil let down), is processed to separate solid and liquid material. By thermal treatment of the residue, e.g., a coking process, distillate oil is obtained, which can be recycled as part of the pasting oil. This stream is rich in polynuclear aromatics and can be, and has been, used for the recovery of such material. HAVING had some experience in the use of gasoline-gas in a laboratory, I have been induced by frequent inquiry to present a few hints concerning it, which I hope may be of some value to those who are out of the reach of coal-gas, and who contemplate using this gas. While I will not delay to describe the method by which this gas is made, it may not be out of place to note that, unless frequent charges are put into the carburetter, the gas is variable in richness. This may be partially avoided, it is said, by repeatedly pumping from one cell in the carburetter to another. If a machine is in constant use for many months without re charging, the gas becomes rather poor for illuminating purposes ; but in this condition it may be burned in a Bunsen burner with advan tage. Could the gas be used always in this condition, no difficulty would be experienced, and it would be quite satisfactory for general laboratory purposes. Considerable annoyance, however, is experi enced whenever the machine is filled with gasoline. The Bunsen and other burners then produce a flame too smoky to be used with com fort, and, in fact, with most of them, a full supply of air; turned on at the base of the burner, will not suffice to completely burn off all the carbon. Finding it necessary to adopt some method by which I could get a flame free from unconsumed carbon, I adopted a plan which has in every way proved satisfactory. In addition to the pipe conveying the gas to the table, and ar ranged with a stopcock, there is brought to the table, within a fern inches of the gas-pipe, another pipe, conveying air direct from the pump. This pipe is also arranged with a stop-cock. The air- and gas-pipes are now connected with one pipe by a T joint; and to this last pipe is attached, by rubber tubing, the Bunsen or other burner. I have successfully used this simple system in connection with both small and large Bunsen burners, a burner with three tubes, arid a Fletcher burner; and recently I have added a new still to our equipment, and have been tising with it a Fletcher special high power burner No. 6, to which this system has been applied. No exact demarcation can be made between producfion engineering and engineering research projects which interest production engineers because the results of today's engineering research make possible many of the applied production engineering methods of tomorrow. A corollary of the development of fundamental research is that so-called practical research becomes necessary. Assuming engineering research to include all subjects related to oil and gas production on which knowledge is being increased through experimentation and through analyses of data obtained from both the laboratory and the field, a review of the work of 1932 shows that the fundamental concepts of at least three major problems have become better understood—bottom-hole pressures, solubility of gas in oil, and fluid movement—and that the established data on the relationships of oil and gas have been applied to obtain more efficient and more economic production of both. Engineers no longer are concerned primarily with the initial development of devices for obtaining the pressures at the bottom of wells. Advancement in the technique of obtaining reliable pressure readings in wells has been rapid. One of the first public suggestions regarding apparatus for obtaining precise information at the bottom of oil wells was made before the Petroleum Division of the A.I.M.E. in 1928. Even during the early development stages in East Texas, reservoir pressures were estimated from well-head observations. Soon, however, a number of proved devices and methods were available, and today bottom-hole pressures in many fields are being recorded and studied as an essential part of the production programs. The research now turns to interpretations of data, obtained with these devices, in terms of reservoir energy and to the development of methods whereby the oil and gas will be withdrawn in accordance with rational and equitable programs based on oil-gas-energy relationships. The term ((bottom-hole pressures" should not be interpreted as indicating the full scope of all research on this problem. THE Omaha District, Corps of Engineers, has been doing subsurface exploration work for a number of years, both by contract and with its own forces. Certain practices and procedures concerning the recovery of large diameter cores have been developed which will be described in this paper. GEOLOGY Most of the drilling to date has been in connection with structures on the main stem of the Missouri River above Sioux City, Iowa. A wide variety of subsurface conditions has been encountered. The bedrock formations appear in regular order from the oldest to the youngest, traveling upstream; or in other words, the general regional dip is to the northwest. The oldest formation is the Carlile shale, a compaction or noncemented waxy shale of Cretaceous age. Because of its uncemented, soft nature this shale has a tendency to grind or wash away when drilled. It also has a tendency to rebound or expand when the overlying pressures are removed. A 25-ft bed of sharp, friable sandstone called the Codell member is present near the top of the Carlile shale. This member is a cemented sediment, but in drilling, many of the sand grains are broken loose and exert extensive abrasive action on the core barrel and bit. Above the Carlile shale is the Niobrara chalk, a soft calcareous deposit with shaly horizons and some thin beds of bentonitic clay. The average thickness of this deposit is about 145 ft. It is soft enough to be sawed or bored with ordinary woodworking tools, yet is compact enough to be used as building block. The Pierre shale, the formation above the Niobrara chalk, is over 800 ft in thickness and is the most widespread material in the area. It is a dark colored, compaction shale containing numerous thin bentonitic clay seams and at certain horizons, hard manganese concretions. The shale has numerous faults and in addition, along the valley walls, has undergone considerable - slumping. Joints, fault planes and slickensided surfaces are common features encountered in drilling and add to the difficulties of high core recovery. East of the Missouri River the bedrock is generally covered with from 100 to 200 ft of glacial till, composed of clays, silts, sands, gravels and boulders. The valley itself is filled with alluvial deposits, mostly of the sand and gravel sizes, and contains a buried preglacial or interglacial channel over 100 ft in depth. The overburden deposits require sampling in connection with engineering studies and must also be cased before the underlying bedrock can be cored. The diameter of the required overburden samples can thus have an indirect effect on the size of core recovered from the bedrock. UNTIL a few years ago, geological mapping, the study of ore boulders, and different geophysical methods were the principal means used in the systematic search for mineral deposits covered by a layer of disintegration products or soil. These methods have been developed to a high stage of perfection as far as the geometrical definition of the conductor is considered. Use of geophysical methods in prospecting is based on the fact that an ore body differs from the country rock not only geologically but also in its physical properties. The general drawbacks and complications included in the use of geophysical methods are well known to everyone who has been using them, so need not be entered into here in detail. One of the more important ones is the fact that geophysical methods are unable to furnish information concerning the chemical composition of the ore bodies responsible for the indications. Further, the ores of many metals, such as silver, gold, beryllium, zinc, mercury, tin, lead, vanadium, antimony, chromium. molybdenum, tungsten, manganese, cobalt, nickel, and the platinum metals cannot be directly located by known geophysical methods, owing to lack of physical characteristics suitable for distinguishing them from the country rock. Thus it is quite natural that efforts have been made to develop direct methods for prospecting and locating ore bodies of the elements named. Known as chemical, biogeo-chemical, and geobotanical methods of prospecting, these have been much improved during recent years. A brief review of these methods and of some results obtained with them will be presented in the following, on the basis of available information and my own experience.

A mathematical model was derived for the temperature change in a particle undergoing heterogeneous chemical reaction and heal exchange with a stream of fluid. The model has been applied specifically to the exothermic oxidation of spherical particles of zinc sulfide. Very good agreement was obtained between the theoretical prediclion and experimental observation. It was found that at no stage of the reaction was the particle subjected to a state of thermal instability. In studies of gas-solid reactions, it is generally assumed that the gaseous and the solid phases are at the same temperature throughout the reaction period. This is not strictly true since most of the reactions are either exothermic or endothermic in nature. This paper deals only with heterogeneous gas-solid reactions of noncatalytic type. In the case of exothermic reactions (e.g., roasting of sulfides), there may result an increase in temperature of the particle due to the release of the heat of reaction, and this increase in temperature may enhance the reaction rate and thus cause further release of heat. Such a "spiralling" effect may lead to a thermally unstable situation within the particle. On the other hand, in the case of endothermic reactions (e.g., calcination of limestone), there may occur a decrease in temperature of the particle as the reaction proceeds, leading to a virtual "quenching" of the reaction front. A general discussion of autothermic processes with emphasis on properties and reactor design is given by Van Heerden. 1 Levesque and cubicciotti 2 observed self heating of the sample in the oxidation of thorium. Anous et al. 3 observed self cooling of the sample in their dehydration studies on chrome alum. Cannon and Denbigh, 4 and Ong et al.5 reported self heating of the sample in their studies of the kinetics of oxidation of zinc sulfide. A typical plot of heat generation and heat loss rates with reaction temperature is shown in Fig. 1.'14 The Sigmoid curve represents the heat generation rate while the straight lines represent the heat loss rate. The main objectives of this analysis are to estimate the temperature increase of a single particle undergoing an exothermic reaction and to study the possibility of a thermally unstable situation within the particle. Also, a study of the dependence of the tempera- ture increase on different process variables has been attempted. A "she ll-by-shell" method has been proposed to analyze the problem. The shells may be made as small as necessary, and equations may be set up for heat transfer by various mechanisms. Such equations will have to be solved for each shell, with the boundary conditions for ith shell being obtained from the (i - 1)th shell, using a high speed digital computer. The oxidation of spherical particles of zinc sulfide is considered for this analysis, but the treatment is general enough to be applicable to other reactions and particle shapes. The oxidation reaction can be written as AH =« -115 kcal/mole ZnS [1] Such a reaction has been found to proceed in a topo-chemical manner; i.e., as the reaction proceeds, a progressively thicker outer shell of zinc oxide is formed, while the inner core of unreacted sulfide decreases. It has been found experimentally, both in the present work and in the previous investigations,4-6 that the particle retains its original dimensions. Therefore, at any given time, the particle may be

GASIFICATION of coal under pressure produces a gas that may be used as the fuel in a gas turbine. The pressure produced by a gas-turbine compressor (5 to 9 atm) should allow the use of high firing rates without unreasonably high solid carry-over rates. Hot make-gas with the tars contained in it in the vapor form can be used in a gas turbine. Most of the ash can be removed through a grate, and only a small portion of the ash and any of the solid combustible material carried over by the make-gas requires separation. The gas stream from which separation is required is a small portion of the total flow of a gas-turbine plant and hence the separator size will be small. The gas stream is reducing and will not, therefore, allow separator fires to occur. The response of the producer to rapid load changes is satisfactory. Only the air rate must change substantially in synchronism with the load. The coal feed, the steam addition to the blast, and the ash-removal rate can follow the load changes with time lags in the order of minutes. The necessary control equipment is simplified by these producer characteristics. With these possibilities in mind, the Steam Turbine Division of the General Electric Co. made arrangements with Battelle Memorial Institute in January 1945 to investigate the problems of the gasification process. A number of tests were made during this investigation on an updraft producer with a grate area of 1 sq ft. The equipment used has been described and the results of the tests made between 1946 and 1950 have been reported.1 The testing with this small producer was recently completed. The concluding tests were run to determine the effectiveness of a clinker-grinding grate and the effect of the operating conditions on the amount and character of the solid carry-over. The present paper describes the producer as modified, and gives the results of the tests using three coals. Another method of using coal in gas turbines is to pulverize it and burn it directly in the combustion chambers. This plan is being tried by the Loco- motive Development Committee of the Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., whose investigation has reached the stage of tests of full-sized equipment.

The Niobates (Columbates) and Tantalates are chiefly salts of metaniobic and metatantalic acid, RNb2O6 and RTa2O6; also in part Pyroniobates, R2Nb2O7, etc. Titanium is prominent in a number of the species, which are hence intermediate between the niobates and titanates. Niobium and tanta¬lum also enter into the composition of a few rare silicates, as wöhlerite, låvenite, etc. The following groups may be mentioned: The isometric PYROCHLORE GROUP, including pyrochlore, microlite, etc. The tetragonal FERGUSONITE Group, including fergusonite and sipylite. The orthorhombic COLUMBITE Group, including columbite and tantalite. Also the orthorhombic SAMARSKITE GROUP, including yttrotantalite, samarskite, and ånnerodite. The species belonging in this class are for the most part rare, and are hence but briefly described.

PREVIOUS studies of the shock loading of randomly oriented polycrystalline aggregates have firmly established that, after rather short load duration, hydrostatic compression closely approximates the shocked state.' However, McQueen deduced from pressure measurements with good time resolution that, during shock loading, metals begin to undergo a stress relaxation at the yield stress. He suggested that the relaxation is due to plastic deformation accompanying the change from a one-dimensional compression to a three-dimensional, hydrostatic, compression.' Stress relaxation may occur faster as stress is increased above the yield stress, but the existence of unidirectionally compressed states for finite times suggests that the concept of a unidirectionally distorted lattice should furnish considerable insight into the mechanical behavior of materials subjected to shock loading. Here, a crystallographic analysis is presented for the hypothetical situation where atom motion may be considered as unidirectional which, as indicated above, is a useful extension of the macroscopic concept of shock loading to the microscopic domain. Only motion caused by the com-pressive forces is treated; i.e., lattice vibrations upon which this motion is superimposed, as discussed by Fitzgerald, are ignored.3 The purpose of the analysis to be presented is to develop a description for single crystals of the lattice rotations that occur for idealized uniaxial strain deformation. The usefulness of such an analysis in realistic deformation is to give a method of specification of those properties of an initially distorted lattice which would affect the subsequent deformation. Non-axial complications that arise experimentally, such as off-axis rarefaction waves, must be treated in proper context. Consider the material element shown in Fig. 1 and let the compression be uniform at all regions of the element. Then, any interior point of the element is displaced in proportion to its distance from the base of the element. Accordingly, if the top of a unit element is displaced by an amount, (-K), with respect to the base, a point P(X, Y) will be displaced by (-KY). Crystal planes are, therefore, rotated by the compression. Analysis of this rotation may be accomplished from the geometry shown in Fig. 1 where the line OP is the edge of the plane {hkl} and N is its normal.
