Whether we have occasion to think of it or not, an adequate and economic supply of energy fuels is vital to each of us. It is interesting to look ahead at the way in which fuels from supplementary sources will begin to enter into the energy mix to help meet the long-term national energy needs. From 1947 to 1965, the average annual rate of growth of energy consumption was 2.7%, with total energy demand in 1965 being equivalent to 54 quadrillion Btu's. During this short period of 18 years, the cumulative output of coal in the U.S. was 9.6 billion tons; natural gas, 193.5 trillion cu ft; and crude oil, 45.9 billion bbl. During the next decade and a half the nation's energy requirements are expected to grow at an average rate of 3.3% yearly, with consumption of energy expected to reach an annual rate of about 88 quadrillion Btu's by 1980, or 63% over the 1965 level.

At this time, when electricity in its various applications is attract- ing so much interest, and with such good reason, it has been suggested to me that, as the Aspen Mining and Smelting Company, of Aspen, Pitkin county, Colorado, was the first mining company in America to employ electrical power for hoisting, a record of what has been accomplished by this company would be of interest. Early in the year 1888 the question of power for the development of the ore-horizon lying below the level of the tunnel through which the property is worked, became one of importance. The conditions under which it was proposed to use power were as follows (See Fig. 1): The company's mines lie upon the northwestern slope of a mountain, the ascent of which is at an angle of 28' from the horizon. The ore, consisting of argentiferous galena and other silver-bearing mineral, is found at or near the plane of contact of a superincumbent mass of blue limestone, with an underlying bed of dolomite. The structures and transformation temperatures of high-purity Fe-Cr alloys have been investigated as functions of composition (0 to 10 wt pct Cr) and rate of quenching from the high-temperature Y phase field (up to 40,000°C sec-1). The structures were chmacterized by transmission electron microscopy. The transformation temperatures for each alloy exhibited the progressive decrease to a constant value with increasing cooling rate which has been shown to be characteristic of several iron binary systems. The corresponding structures were found to become increasingly finer in scale with increasing cooling rate and solute content, but to remain essentially equiaxed in character. In all the materials except the high-purity iron and one of the alloys, an additional and lower transformation temperature than the constant value for the equiaxed structures was observed. The structures of specimens which transformed at these lower temperatures (only single thermal wrests were observed in any given run) were martensitic and consisted of arrays of fine ferrite laths which varied in size and morphology with changing solute content. The factors controlling the nature of these transformations are discussed. The composition dependence of the martensitic transformation temperature, ME, in Fe-Cr alloys together with those reported for other iron binary systems indicate that MB for pure iron is some 700°c, rather than the values of 550° and 760°C reported previously. This conclusion is further supported by the results of a compmison of the thermodynamics of mmtensite formation in several systems. ThE extensive investigations of the structures formed on athermal transformation in iron and its alloys have led to the characterization of several forms of martensitic or "military"1,2 transformations and, in addition, a "civilian7' transformation to ferrite or "equiaxed a"* which occurs athermally and at a very high rate.374

The recent surge in demand for uranium in the US, accompanied by a significant increase in price, has stimulated the search for and development of lower grade ore bodies. At the mill, this translates into much larger throughputs and-compounded by many recently enacted environmental considerations-has made the cost of milling a critical factor in today's uranium production economics. The three conventional milling methods employed in the extraction of uranium ores are reviewed in the following sections.

Iron, like other metals, solidifies through the formation of dendritic crystals; iron alloys forming solid solutions, like other solid solutions, solidify likewise through the formation of dendritic crystals. The alloying elements or impurities as well as the inclusions segregate generally in the interstices, or "fillings," between the axes and branches of the dendrites; that is, in the portions last to solidify. This results in dendritic segregation or heterogeneity, which is generally persistent and makes possible the revelation of the dendritic crystallization of the metal through the selective action of a suitable etching reagent.' For this purpose, a cuprie solution, such as Le Chatelier's, is generally used, copper being deposited on the pure, or relatively pure, ferrite present in the axes while the fillings remain free, or relatively free, from copper deposition. The dendritic structure, formed on solidification in a steel containing 0.50 per cent. carbon, 0.37 per cent. manganese, 0.12 per cent. silicon, 0.07 per cent. sulfur, and 0.035 per cent. phosphorus is shown, after treatment with Le Chatelier reagent, in Fig. 1 under a magnification of 8 diameters. Commercial steel always contains inclusions of manganese sulfide, which are located in the fillings of the dendrites. Comstock has shown that boiling sodium picrate imparts a dark coloration to these inclusions. We find that this reagent likewise reveals dendritic segregations in commercial steel, as shown in Fig. 2, under a magnification of 8 diameters. which represents the same spot as that shown in Fig. 1. The fillings have been darkened while the axes remain white, the action being, therefore, the reverse of that of cupric reagents. On closer examination, under higher magnification (Fig. 3) it is found that the picrate blackens the small particles of manganese sulfide, that these are frequently surrounded by a rim of white, or relatively white, ferrite, and that both the ferrite

Recovery of fine coal from solids reporting to wash water has become increasingly important. These solids range from about 28 mesh to 0 and constitute 3 to 7 pct by weight of the feed tonnage to a coal preparation plant. In the past they were usually wasted to streams, but present clean stream legislation makes it necessary to remove them from the wash water and, if economically possible, recover the associated coal as a saleable product. Where these solids are not wasted to streams or to slime ponds they are recovered by thickeners and filters. Since filter cake is often high in ash or sulfur, or both, it is not readily marketed or used. Common practice is to mix it with other plant products, generally slack or cleaned run-of-mine. Uniform blending is difficult, not only because the impurity is usually high, but also because during certain operating periods it is possible to get a concentration of this filter cake in a railroad or barge.

As predicted, during 1937 South Louisiana witnessed one of the most active drilling campaigns in the history of the area, resulting in the discovery .of 14 new fields. The economic importance of 10,000-ft. production was far-reaching and the objective depths placed on some wildcats was 12,000 feet. Most of the important discoveries and deep tests were in the delta area between the Atchafalaya and Mississippi Rivers, where the upper Miocene sands were found productive between 10,000 and 11,000 ft. The casing program on these wells usually called for a protection string of 95/8-in. casing at approximately 9500 ft. Drilling barges with the heaviest equipment were used where water transportation was available. The oil production for South Louisiana during 1937 was 62,147,690 bbl., as compared with 51,968,727 bbl. during 1936, an increase of 19.5 per cent. There were 281 oil and gas wells and 172 dry holes completed during 1937 as compared with 262 oil and gas wells and 135 dry holes during the previous period. New Fields Gibson.—The first discovery for the year was in the Gibson area, where Shell Petroleum Corporation's Realty Operators No. 1, sec. 18, 17 S., 15 E., Terrebonne Parish, was completed flowing 780 bbl. of 38° A.P.I. oil daily through a 14/64-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 1700 lb. Production is from upper Miocene sand found from 9461 to 9483 feet. Abbevil1e.—The discovery well for the Abbeville field was Continental Oil Company's Hebert No. 1, sec. 20, 12 S., 3 E., Vermilion Parish, completed flowing 50 bbl. of distillate and 2 million cubic feet of gas through a 3/16-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 2550 lb. The well was plugged back from 12,216 ft. in the Chickisawhay, and is producing through perforations from upper Miocene sand found from 7668 to 7682 ft. Later in the year, the same operators completed Brookshire No. 1, sec. 66, 12 S., 3 E., flowing 366 bbl. of 42° A.P.I. oil per day through a 3/16-in. choke with a tubing pressure of 1800 lb. Deep drilling was the keynote of the more important developments in the North Rocky Mountain region during 1929, with Montana recording the most important achievement through discovery of three new oil fields. Alberta produced 1,000,000 bbl. of 74 gravity naphtha, showing a considerable gain over 1928, developed a commercial oil pool in Turner Valley and extended that field 8 miles southward. Wyoming's discovery field was deepened to a second producing horizon, giving impetus to deeper drilling, and practically every Wyoming oil field will have a deep test either this year or in the near future. Whereas Montana prospecting has been confined to the shallow plains structures, since the discovery of Kevin-Sunburst field, the coming year will see an active search for new oil and gas pools in sharp-dip structures, following the success of prospecting in the Sweetgrass Hills during 1929. A dozen or more structures have been mapped in North Central Montana, several of these straddling the Alberta border. Four structures tested thus far have all shown commercial oil or gas or both. Sweetgrass Hills The first important development in the Hills area was the Rogers-Imperial gasser, which had an initial of 51,000,000 cu. ft. of dry gas per day, with a rock pressure of 1080 lb. This well is located on a sharp nose running north from the hills into Alberta. Several wells drilled by independent operators on the American side, on the west flank of reserve structure, have developed a total open flow capacity of 30,000,000 cubic feet. The third structure tested in the Hills area is known as Bears Den, where commercial oil was found at the base of the Cretaceous at 2470 ft. From the historical account of the coal industry set forth in the preceding pages the reader will have learned that coal is extremely widely spread throughout the United States, and in most places it has been easily found, that it has been remarkably easy to develop, and, where the deposits were available to streams on which it could be transported to markets, it was opened almost as soon as the country was settled. Such were the mines along the James, Susquehanna, Monongahela, Ohio, Kentucky, Cumberland and Big Muddy Rivers. In other localities where such easy means of transport were not convenient, the early production was confined to local use, or to places to which it could be hauled by wagons, but everywhere small mines were established almost as soon as the country was settled, and these increased both in number and size as the available markets grew. These early mines were nearly always opened by local people, and the industry was so far-flung that its growth attracted little or no attention excepting when a labor disturbance or a breakdown in transportation occurred. Had it been concentrated in a few places as most metal industries were, or as the petroleum industry was for many years after it started, it is probable that much better records of its progress would have been kept. When the canal era began, in the eighteen twenties, coal was at first not considered as a valuable source of freight revenue, and much surprise was expressed that the receipts of the Schuylkill Canal were very largely from coal after the first few years, as was the case of the Union Canal though not to such an extent. Even the early railroads to the coal fields did not realize the extent to which the products of mines would figure in their revenues, and it was many years before railroads were built practically solely for prospective coal traffic; indeed this did not happen until some years after the Civil War. Map 12 shows the extent of the canal system in the United States in its relation to the coal fields at the time of its maximum development. It will be seen that only the coal areas in Pennsylvania, Ohio, and to a very small extent in Indiana were able to ship by canal at all, and that only a very small portion of such fields could do so. PHILIP NORTH MOORE was born on July 8, 1849, at Connersville, Ind. His father, a civil engineer, was descended from Henry Moore who came from Ireland in 1773 to live in Washington, Pa. Through his mother, Philip Moore was descended from John North, who came to America in 1635 and settled in Connecticut. The story of Mr. Moore's life as told by himself is given on pages 373-386 of T. A. Rickard's "Interviews with Mining Engineers." He studied at Miami University, where he gained the degree of A.B. in 1870, and A.M. in 1873. In 1920 his alma muter conferred on him the honorary degree of LL.D. He, as a special student, was a member of the class of 1872 at the School of Mines of Columbia University.

In a former paper (Runs., xxi., 286) I described the plant of the Marsac Refinery, and the manipulations of the process, but cou1d not, at the time, give reliable statistical results. To supply the latter is the object of the present paper. I shall give actual facts as correctly as possible, without any bias one way or the other. For all statistics I am indebted to Mr. W. G. Lamb, who has charge of the Marsac lixiviation-plant and refinery; to Mr. A. Luebeck, assayer at the Ontario mill; and to the Daly Office, Salt Lake City.* Before starting on the work of the year 1892, a most careful clean-up was made, and any remnants were charged to the refinery. During 1892 the Marsac lixiviation-works produced 48.8 tons of so-called "regular" sulphides, which contained, on an average, 11,449 ounces of silver per ton; 11.77 ounces of gold per ton; and 569.8 pounds of copper per ton. To this must be added, 266 pounds of sulphides and by-products left over from the product of 1891, which contained 1380 ounces of silver, 1.41 ounces of gold, and 63 pounds of copper. Before giving the results of the clean-up, a general discussion of the items of expense, methods of assaying, etc., is desirable.

G. H. CLAMER, * PHILADELPHIA, PA.-Unfortunately, prior to the war no serious attention was given to the conservation of tin, notwithstanding that this country is practically dependent upon outside sources for its entire tin supply. Tin is of vital importance in many industries, but it is surprising how many and how excellent are its substitutes when we become acquainted with them. Tin has always been a relatively high-priced metal, and it is part of the human attitude to associate high prices with high standards; it is not until the price of a commodity becomes well-nigh prohibitive that we hunt for substitutes, because the idea of substitution seems always to involve an assumption that the substitute must necessarily be inferior. The history of the development of bearing bronzes is a striking example of this policy. In the early clays, copper-tin alloys were almost universally used, the idea then being prevalent, which is still held by many, that a bearing to resist wear must be hard, and the harder the better. The favorite bronze bearing contained 90 per cent. copper and 10 per cent. tin; frequently, in service which was considered severe, even higher proportions of tin were used.. X-RAY analysis and single-crystal study have been utilized in recent years as a new means of following constitutional changes in alloys. If such transformations can be suppressed by rapid cooling, they can be followed at room temperature in a particularly convenient manner. In the following we shall consider changes in solubility and polymorphic transformations with particular reference to phenomena of the age-hardening type. Finally a thermodynamic viewpoint is developed for examining such transformations.

The Central Michigan area held first place in the state during the year. Midland and Isabella, the leading counties in 1932, produced most of the oil in 1933. The Porter field southeast of Mt. Pleasant and along the same structural trend saw the greatest drilling activity. In Porter during the year 117 new wells were drilled. Under proration these wells produced 3,583,617 bbl., or nearly one-half the total for the state, which has been estimated at 7,947,695 bbl. The Porter field is already outlined on all sides except the northwest. It probably reached its peak in 1933. Unless a new field of some magnitude is developed in 1934, Michigan will see a continuous decline. The Greendale extension to the old Mt. Pleasant field furnished the new flush for 1932. In 1933

The first plans were made in 1930 for the mining by open-pit methods of the low-grade disseminated ore body now known as the Morenci open pit. It was not until 1937, however, that final plans were completed and the decision reached to go ahead with the actual development. Many advances were made in open-pit mining equipment during that period of seven years, therefore the ways and means of attack actually used were very different from those originally contemplated. Diesel-operated bulldozers, big trucks, full-revolving electric shovels and electric churn drills constitute the major equipment finally purchased for this modern stripping operation. Neither the bulldozers nor the big trucks were considered in the early operating plans, for at that time bulldozers had not been used in mining operations and the trucks as yet were undesigned. The full-revolving shovel and the churn drills were not new developments in open-pit equipment, but both had undergone remarkable manufacturing transition, emerging far more efficient and far more dependable than their predecessors. Even the ordinary drilling steel had been fundamentally changed. It was now threaded so that the dulled cutting bits could be detached and replaced, thus eliminating the costly transportation of long bars to the drill shop for resharpening. The decision to use trucks in the preliminary stripping operations was based on the desirability of this type of transportation to economically prepare the pit for rail haulage, coupled with the success that the contractors had had with them on other big excavation jobs. There are at present no plans for the use of trucks beyond the preliminary work, inasmuch as rail haulage will give lower costs after roadbeds and benches are once established. For many years to come, both ore and waste haulage will be over favorable grades. The average length of ore haul between the pit and an assembly yard will be about two miles. From there the crushers will be 1? miles with a connecting track grade of 0.4 per cent. The upper ore benches of the pit will be reached from the yard by a series of four switchbacks over a ruling grade of 4.0 per cent compensated for curvature. Tracks to the dumps will be on 0.2 per cent grades.

The $650 million financing for Into Ltd.'s Soroako nickel project is a story worth telling-not only because the project itself represents a significant achievement but also because there are certain important lessons that can be derived from our experience in financing the project. A critical appraisal of the methods and successes in the financing plan is presented in this article, in light of goals which Inco sought to achieve. A technical assessment of the project is not included, since Inco Ltd. has submitted a series of papers on this subject at the International Laterite Symposium as part of the 108th Annual Meeting of AIME in February 1979. The metals Cd, ,Wg-, Sn, TI, Zn, and Zr reach a peak hardness after a criticfir1 deformation by rolling- and then soften with fwther rolling-, thereby exhibiting wovk softening. Optical metallography on Cd, Mg, and Zn shows that work softening is accompanied by a change in grain size occurring during deformation. The creep of zinc from -1l° to +60°C at stresses in the range of 7.9 to 17.3 kg per sq mm is given by € = e0 -t- Bt + Kt +at6. The third and second rate constcints are related by the equation a = K~ K6 and their stress and temperature dependence can be represented by the equations K = A, . exp - (u, - Bu)/kT. A model based upon the stress activated glide of sub-boundaries is proposed which qualitatively accounts for the metallog-raphic observations. Expressions, which are in reasonable quantitative agreement with the ex-pe~inzental observations, are derived for the creep of zinc. THE term "work softening" has been used previously by Polakowski1 and by Cottrell and stokes2 to describe phenomena where further strain of a deformed material leads to a decrease in flow stress. In both cases, however, the conditions were changed for the second straining. Here, the term "work softening" is intended to refer to a decrease in flow stress after continued straining in the same direction at the same temperature: work softening is the antithesis of "work hardening". Work softening of zinc was reported by chadwick3 and in discussion of that paper Jenkins4 indicated that cadmium also work softens. More recently work softening has been reported5 in two magnesium alloys, -99.5 pct Mg. Chadwick found that the hardness, 0.2 pct Proof Stress and the UTS of electrolytic zinc all increased with progressive cold reductions up to 30 pct and then progressively decreased with further rolling. Gay and Kelly6 used a back-reflection X-ray technique to study the effect of cold rolling zinc and found that although deformations greater than 2 to 5 pct reduction in thickness produced some recrystallized grains, deformations greater than 40 pct caused com-plete spontaneous recrystallization. At deformations greater than 60 pct the material was found to consist solely of recrystallized grains, -20 pm diam, the size of which decreased with increasing reduction and was much less than the initial grain size of the annealed material (-300 pm diam). Similar results were also reported for cadmium, tin, and lead.6 Gay, Hirsch, and Kelly' suggest that these experiments indicate recrys-tallization takes place when the dislocation density exceeds a certain value. However, no measurements of MATERIALS AND EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The purity of the metals used in this work is indicated by the following figures: Zn (99.99); Cd (99.94); Mg (99.95); T1 (99.99). The zirconium was iodide crys tal bar with a probable purity of about 98 pct. The metals were obtained in the form of 0.25 in. thick strip or 0.425 in. diam rod by various fabrication methods and then annealed to ensure complete re-crystallization. Hardness-deformation curves were obtained at room temperature by rolling 4 in. thick strip under conditions which left a surface adequate for diamond pyramid hardness tests immediately after rolling. The hardness was taken as the niean of five impressions made using a 5 kg load and the time elapsing between rolling and making the last impression never exceeded 5 min. The zinc specimens for creep testing were from 3 by 3 by 4 in. cast slabs which were rolled to 0.10 in. thickness starting at 350°C and finishing cold. The resulting strip was cut into pieces 1 in. wide and annealed in batches. With suitable choices of annealing temperature between 100" arid 400°C five different grain sizes varying from 4.54 x 10' to 3.03 x l05 grains per sq cm (530 to 20 um diam) were obtained. Creep tests were done in compression using a sub-press, based on a design after Ford,8 in which the strip is compressed between dies 0.100 in. wide under conditions of plane strain. Since there is no lateral spread of the material, the area of contact between the dies and strip remains constant throughout the test and the application of a constant load, using the load maintaining device of a hydraulic testing machine, resulted in a constant stress. Covering the dies with strips of P.T.F.E. reduced frictional effects to a minimum. The creep strain was obtained by measuring the travel of the crosshead of the testing machine to a sensitivity of 0.1 pct reduction in thickness. The complete subpress assembly was contained in a steel box and for tests above the ambient this was filled with liquid paraffin and heated electrically. Temperatures below the ambient were obtained with a cooling mixture of acetone and solid carbon dioxide in the box. The liquids were stirred and the temperature of the specimen, which was controlled to ±0.5"C dur-ing a test, was measured by a thermocouple placed near the dies. Compression testing of cylindrical specimens was also carried out in the subpress using hardened flat discs separated from the test material by P.T.F.E. sheets which obviated barrelling of the specimens. We did install one 100% brick bottom in our #33 furnace which is basically the same design as Inland's furnace. We had previously embarked on a program of replacing all bottoms in our 300 ton furnaces every 2nd campaign which would be about every 2000 - 2300 heats. This had been necessitated by the effect of our rather high oxygen blowing rates and our desire to maintain a minimum bottom interval level. This meant that we were able to compare bottom performance of various types of materials on a realistic bas is. Since furnace availability is critical to our operation, we are organized to employ every piece of equipment and all the necessary man power to complete a rebuild in the shortest possible time. A 300 ton furnace requires 7.5 days to rebuild. If a new bottom is to be installed an additional 2.5 days is added - 24 hours for tear out and 36 hours for bricklaying - making a total of 10 days.

On Oct. 29, 1929, there were hearty speeches of welcome and of hope for the successful issue of this international gathering; on Nov. 7, the farewells were even more heartfelt expressions, and anticipation gave place to, realization. H. I. H. Prince Yasuhito of Chichibu, who had graciously opened the Congress; was unavoidably absent at the closing ceremony, being on duty with his command at the Army maneuvers, so that the principal speech was made by the President of the Congress, Baron Furuichi. The outstanding statistics of the meetings were: an over-all attendance, delegates and members, of 800 from overseas and 2800 Japanese 83 sectional meetings, all. meetings having practically capacity attendance, this being especially true of Section 11, mining and metal¬lurgy, where standing room only was commonly the rule; and 780 papers were presented, in full or in abstract or by title. H. I. H. Prince Chichibu attended each section on Oct. 31. The large attendance of Japanese students was notable at most sections.
