THE absence of a convenient glossary of terms connected with mining and metallurgy has long been felt by the general public. It is to meet this want, not to furnish a technical manual for experts, that the following glossary has been prepared. It originated in an attempt on my part to revise for publication the manuscript of a compilation prepared from the appendix of Yale's work on Mining Titles and one or two other sources, to serve as an appendix to a new work on mining law, about to be published by Mr. H. N. Copp, of Washington, D. C. This revision soon assumed, contrary to my original intention, the proportions of a reconstruction; and with the consent of Mr. Copp, and for the purpose of receiving from my fellow-members valuable aid, I presented my still incomplete work as a paper at the Lake Superior meeting of the Institute, inviting from any quarter suggestions of new terms or better definitions to be incorporated in the glossary before its final publication. This invitation was so widely and generously responded to, that I cannot undertake to make in this place individual acknowledgments to those members of the Institute, and professional colleagues outside of it, who have favored me with assistance and advice. The labor bestowed upon this paper since its presentation at the Lake Superior meeting has considerably exceeded that of its first preparation, as may be inferred from its great increase in length, as well as the numerous alterations which it has undergone. It could certainly be still further enlarged and improved; but I think a comparison of it with any of the glossaries of the same class now in print will show, at least, that it is an advance upon what has hitherto been accomplished. 1 shall be grateful, however, for further criticisms and suggestions; and I purpose at some future time to incorporate in a supplementary paper the results of such additional collections or corrections as I may obtain. To avoid too great prolixity, I adopted at the outset the following general principles: 1. To include the most important technical words and phrases used by American miners and metallurgists, or occurring in English books and periodicals.

The following tables have been compiled from the annual reports of the Inspectors of Mines, to determine the percentages of fatal and non-fatal casualties from roof-falls and explosions of fire-damp. As we cannot assume that every accident has teen recorded by the inspectors ; as many casualties terminating fatally after the lapse of a considerable period, are inevitably recorded as " non-fatal;" and as clerical errors may have crept into the compilation,* the figures of these tables cannot be considered absolutely correct, but the summary is sufficiently reliable to show the features I wish to differentiate. Under the heading " Miscellaneous" are included all accidents not directly attributable to explosions of fire-damp, roof-falls or fails of coal. Prominent among the numerous causes included under this head are premature or delayed explosion of blasts, accidental explosion of powder or cartridges, accidents from mine cam, falls in shafts, machine accidents, sliding of loose coal in pitching breasts, suffoca tion by choke-damp, etc., comprising in all 48 per cent. of the total number of casualties.

A graphic method was developed which can be used to predict the tendency of oil field waters to precipitate calcium Sulfate under a variety of conditions. Application of this method is made to the prediction of sulfate scale formation in heater treaters. boilers. oil wells. cooling systems and water injection wells. INTRODUCTION A solution may be said to be in equilibrium with respect to a given salt when the concentration of that silt in equal to its solubility. If for any reason the concentration of the salt is increased or its solubility decreased. the equilibrium is upset and precipitation of the salt takes place. Thus, if the concentration of a salt in a particular solution is known and its solubility can be calculated for a given set of conditions, the tendency of this salt to form a precipitate under these conditions can be predicted. Based on these principles a method has been developed for determining the tendency of oil field waters to form calcium Sulfate precipitates under various conditions. THE SOLUBILITY DIAGRAM Calcium sulfate precipitation most frequently occurs when two waters are mixed: one containing calcium ions. and the other sulfate ions. As one of these waters is added to the other a point may be reached where the concentration of calcium Sulfate is greater than its solubility. thus causing the formation of a precipitate. The solubility diagram is a graphic device for determining the location of such points, thereby making possible a prediction of the tendency of such a system to deposit sulfate scale. A similar diagram can be used to solve many other problems involving the precipitation of calcium sulfate. Fig. 1 shows a solubility diagram representing the mixing of two waters. Water "A" contains a high concentration of odium, magnesium, and sulfate ions together with a small amount of calcium. Water "B" contains a high concentration of calcium ions together with sodium, magnesium and a small amount of sulfate ions. THE stratigraphical geology of the vicinity of Buffalo has always been of great interest on account of its bearing on the origin and history of the Niagara-river gorge, between the Falls and Lake Ontario. Recently, however, the character and thickness of the strata which underlie Buffalo have acquired more practical and economic importance on account of their relation to the possible occurrence of natural gas in commercial quantity near the Niagara river. In a paper presented at the Duluth meeting (l887), on " Petroleum and Natural Gas in New york State" (Trans., xvi., 906), I gave a brief description of the four wells which had been drilled by the Buffalo Cement Company between 1883 and that time. One of these wells is 1305 fret deep; and, at the time that my paper was finally revised for the Transactions (June, 1888), it was still an open question whether the drill in this well had reached the Niagara limestone, or had penetrated the Medina sandstones and shales, which latter are boldly exposed in a number of localities in the district, hut more particularly along the Niagara river in the vicinity of Lewiston and Qneenstown. The difficulty in this geological question at Buffalo has lain in the fact that no reliable determination could be made of the thickness of the strata included between the Corniferous limestone, immediately below which the drilling of the Buffalo gas-wells was commenced, and the Niagara limestone. On the other hand, the strata included between the latter limestone and the middle portion of the Medina sandstones and shales, have been minutely measured and studied in the Niagara gorge below the Falls by many American and European geologists. The first reliable section of these strata was constructed by Professor Eaton, and published in 1824 in his report on the Geological and Agricultural Survey of the District adjoining the Erie Canal. This section, extending from Lake Erie to Lewiston, is complete, with the exception that no thickness is given to the Salina or Onoudaga salt group,

The co-operation of the members of the Institute is earnestly sought by the Committee on Nominations, recently appointed by the Board of Directors, in its work of formulating a ticket for officers and places falling vacant in the Board of Directors in February, 1916. The Committee must present the official ticket of nominations to the Board of Directors at its October meeting. This paper presents an analysis of fracture mechanisms in coal subjected to bi-axial state of stresses, indentation of laterally con- fined coal specimen. Coal specimens were loaded to failure by the straight wedge indenters at various lateral confinement pressures. Strain distribution and acoustic emission characteristics of coal specimens under stress were recorded. The influence lines of vertical forces acting on the horizontal straight boundary of the coal specimen for each type of wedge indenter have been established using holographic interferometry technique. The effects of wedge indenter angle, confinement pressure, and coal anisotropy on fracture types, failure modes, and post-failure conditions were studied. The results indicated that combined application of holographic interferometry and acoustic emission monitoring techniques is not only suitable for studying deformability of heterogeneous and microscopically discontinuous material under stress but it also enhances the mode of fracture during the post failure stage.

The Climax Molybdenum Company's mine is situated on the Continental Divide at Fremont Pass in Lake County, Colorado. Elevations at the mine range from 11,000 it. to over 12,000 ft. The ore body is on the south flank of Bartlett Mountain, a prominent peak in the Ten Mile Range. A horizontal section of the mine, such as the Phillipson level (Fig. I), shows the outer ore zone as an annular ring varying in width from 300 to 800 ft., surrounding barren silicified rock. In vertical section the outer ore zone is dome shaped (Figs. 2 and 3), the apex of which is truncated at the surface by glaciation, exposing part of the ore body. The outer ore zone overlies the barren core and is itself overlain on the flanks of the dome with unmineralized rock. An ore zone of similar shape underlies the barren core of silicified rock, known as the Central Ore Zone (Figs. 2 and 3). Molybdenite is distributed uniformly through a zone of moderately silicified granite, schist and quartz monzonite (early) porphyry, around a highly silicified core. The molybdenite occurs in veinlets associated with fine granular quartz and pyrite, replacing altered and fractured granite, schist, and porphyry, and as coatings on numerous fractures cutting these rocks. Intense fracturing of all rocks is a characteristic feature of the Climax ore body. Most fractures are mineralized and no longer represent planes of weakness. Much fracturing is postmineral, however, and these fractures are generally filled with sericite or gouge, or remain as unmineralized joints separating otherwise massive rock into blocks of various size. Study and Mapping of Caving Characteristics Important differences in the behavior of caving of various blocks of ore at Climax have been recognized, involving arching of the rock over caved stopes, tendency of caved rocks to funnel, and size of caved rocks. Also, new problems have arisen associated with future mining on the Phillipson level, and may occur with proposed development of lower levels, such as excessive stress on mine pillars caused by large masses of overlying stable rock, and higher costs in maintenance of mine workings in soft, weak rock. To explain the differences and to provide solution for these problems, a study of geologic structure was undertaken early in 1944, to determine whether it would be possible to map cavability of rock from physical features exposed in mine workings and in diamond-drill cores. A comparison of known caved areas was made and rocks were classified structurally according to strength or degree of cavabil-ity. As nothing of this nature had been done before at Climax, the approach to the problem was rather indefinite. This paper is concerned with the layout of a conveyor and beneficiation plant system involving several mines and a single point of delivery. The objective of the procedure is to locate the conveyor lines and beneficiation plants in an optimal manner considering the economics of scale inherent in both the transportation and beneficiation processes. Upon completion of the mining plan, the layout of the conveyor network is achieved through the principle of Steiner minimal trees. The optimal number and location of beneficiation plants for this layout are then determined using a sequential economic analysis based upon the flow of material from the individual sources to the ultimate destination. The practical aspects of the method and the advantages and disadvantages of its use are discussed to link the model to a practical problem.

Automatic controls have long been a fact of technological life. Some understanding of control systems is rapidly becoming essential to the competence of mineral engineers. Students in undergraduate mineral engineering curricula, however, should not be expected to develop proficiency in the design and interpretation of control systems. They should be provided the opportunity to absorb some of the fundamental concepts and cant of such highly specialized peripheral fields as automatic controls. The present paper describes the components of a simple, flexible and relatively inexpensive control system designed primarily for the use of students in independent study projects. The control system is based on a continuous on-stream optical analyzer analogous to commercially available systems using X-Ray fluorescence analysis. The components can be easily adapted to control other separators and separations. As described here, they have been arranged to control the magnetic separation of a magnetite bearing specular hematite from quartz to produce a quartz product of fixed hematite content using a minimum of power. The control system consists of the magnetic separator* with a vibrating feeder, † a sampler, an optical scanner, a differential amplifier, a millivolt recorder ‡ and a motor driven, metered variable DC power supply for the separator electromagnet. An optional magnet current recorder is useful. The system as arranged for closed loop control is illustrated in Fig. 1. The elements of the loop are identified in automatic control jargon in Table I. IN all probability the mining and metallurgical industry as a whole can demonstrate a larger ecorlomic return from installation of dust-control equipment than any other major industrial group. This fact has partially accounted for the marked increase of dust-control installations made during the past decade. While the primary objectives for installation of dust-collecting systems are improved working and operating conditions for men and equipment, the fact that an economic return can be anticipated on salvageable materials is an added advantage which shows in partial or complete equipment write-off. The conditions apply to most phases of the mining, milling, and smelting industry, both non-metallic and metallic. As with any mechanical devices, selection of suitable dust collector equipment involves evaluation of available products with characteristics most nearly meeting conditions of the application at hand. When there is valuable product to be collected, and/or when there are possibilities of air pollution or public nuisance, collector selection is often guided by the maxim of "highest available collection efficiency at reasonable cost and reasonable maintenance." A brief review of dust collector designs will permit outlining of major characteristics of each group. Final selection will involve detailed data against a background of the problem under consideration. The dry centrifugal collectors, see Fig. 1, represent a group of low cost units with minimum maintenance. They are subject to abrasion under heavy abrasive dust loads and to plugging with moist materials. Efficiency drops off rapidly on particle sizes below the 10 to 20 micron group. Because of the large amounts of —10 micron particles in most mining dust problems, they will normally be used as primary collectors and will be followed by high efficiency units. This combination is cspecially popular where the bulk of material is desired in a dry state with wet collection indicated for the final cleanup portion. In remote plant locations, dry centrifugal~ can be used alone if product in dust form has no value or if dust loading is light enough to eliminate a nuisance in the plant area. Where high efficiency dust colleotion equipment must be selected, choice will normally involve fabric arresters, wet collectors, or high voltage Electro-Static precip-itators. Fabric arresters, see Fig. 2, rely on the passing of dust-laden air at low velocity through filter fabric. Velocity ranges from 1 to 3 fpm for the usual installation and may be as high as 10 to 20 fpm in arrangements where automatic frequent vibration or continuous cleaning of the filter media is employed. Fabric is normally suspended in either stocking type or in an enlvelope shape. Collection efficiency is excellent even on sub-micron particle sizes. Equipment is bulky, must be vibrated to remove the collected dust load, and is restricted in applications from temperature and moisture standpoints. Condensation of moisture on the fabric filter mcdia causes plugging of the passages with great reduction in air flow. Temperatures for the usual medias of cotton or wool are 180" and 200°F maximum, although the introduction of synthetic materials such as nylon, orlon, and glass cloth have increased the possibilities of this type of collector for higher temperature applications. The wet-type collector may employ a number of different principles so that entering dust particles in the gas stream are wetted and removed. Principles usually include impingement on collector surface or water droplets, often in combination with centrifugal forces. Variety of wet collector designs is indicated by typical collectors illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. Collection efficiency is a function of the particular design, although the better collectors will have high collection efficiency on particles in the 1-micron range. Wet collectors have the advantage of handling hot or moist gases, take up small space, and eliminate secondary dust problems during the disposal of the material. At times collection of the material wet is a disadvantage. Wet collectors may also be subject to corrosion and freezing factors. The high voltage Electro-Static precipitator, see Fig. 5, is probably the most expensive type of high efficiency collector. It finds its applications generally in problems in which collectors previously discussed cannot be employed. Its collection efficiency is based on its design features and can be excellent on the finest of fume particles. Material is normally collected dry. Gas temperatures are of no great concern as long as condensation does not occur within the dry type of precipitator and the temperatures do not exceed the limits for materials used in its construction. With the application of dislocation damping theory an attempt was made to determine whether the generation and extension of dislocations is inherently more difficult in a brittle steel than in a ductile steel. A ductile steel was compared with a brittle stee1 by simultaneously measuring the ultrasonic attenuation and velocity during tensile test, and the density of free dislocations and their mean loop length were then calculated as a function of strain. The results showed that in the ductile steel there was always a large generation of dislocations and great extension of loop length occurring at some stage within the early plastic region. In contrast, the brittle steel showed very little or no such sudden changes in dislocation dynamic states after the onset of plastic deformation. Furthermore, a strong temperature dependence of dislocation dynamic states was also observed in the ductile steel and a hypothesis was suggested that a thermally activated process of dislocation rearrangement could occur at higher deformation temperatures. The activation energy of dislocation rearrangement at room temperature was estimated as about 2030 cal per mole.C. DUCTILITY is an indispensible property in the application of engineering materials, especially steel. During the past two decades the theoretical and experimental approach to the understanding of flow and fracture of metals has been constantly undergoing changes and progress." while the fracture behavior of metals can be influenced by many factors such as chemical Composition,3 second-phase particle mor-phology,4 and dislocation arrangement,5 it is now a general belief that the fundamental understanding of the ductile-brittle fracture phenomena of solid materials must stem from the study of dislocation dv-namics developed under stress conditions.6,7 Most of the traditional ductility tests, such as Charpy impact test, slow bend test, and tensile fracture test, cannot by themselves reveal directly the mechanisms of ductile to brittle transition of materials. In the experimental investigation of tensile ductility it would be ideal to be able to study directly the dynamics of dis-locations in a bulk specimen during the process of deformation. Since the ultrasonic pulse technique is the only satisfactory method for studying dislocations and the fine details of deformation characteristics in metals in the course of a tensile test, it would appear that a comparative study of ultrasonic attenuation changes during tensile tests of metallic materials exhibiting different ductility might be very informative. So far no work comparable to this study has appeared in the literature. Recent progress in both theory and experiment has indicated the feasibility of studying the dislocation mechanisms of ductility behaviors by ultrasonic measurements during tensile test. Granato and Lucke8 have developed a quantitative theory that enables the calculation of dislocation density and their average loop length from the measurements of ultrasonic attenuation and velocity, and several investigators, including Chiao and Gordon,9'10 have shown that simultaneous ultrasonic measurements can be successfully made during a tensile test. Furthermore, many investigators11-13 have repeatedly proposed in the past several decades that deformation and fracture are mutually self-exclusive, and that the ability or inability of a material to deform plastically, i.e., to generate dislocations, is a major factor in determining whether the material will be ductile or brittle. Thus, in the present work an attempt was made to determine whether the generation and extension of dislocations is inherently more difficult in a brittle steel than in a ductile steel. This article is principally concerned with the study of the relation between the propagation of ultrasonic waves and tensile deformation in a steel series which displays quite different toughness at room tempera-turk. changes in attenuation and velocity of ultrasonic waves have been measured as a function of strain during the deformation process. The results have been interpreted in terms of the vibrating string model for dislocation damping as developed by Granato and Lucke, and it has been found that some of the more subtle predications of the model are in good agreement with the experiments. This would be especially meaningful because most of the previous experiments in testfying the model were carried out with single crystals of high-purity materials and little work has been done with polycrystalline steel alloys. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES AND RESULTS Specimen Materials. The tensile specimens used throughout this experiment were of two compositions selected from a series of Fe-Mo-0.77 pct Mn-0.22 pct C steels prepared for a ductile-brittle fracture transition study. One steel contains 0.21 pct Mo and the other 1.03 pct Mo. These two compositions were chosen for the present study because they possess quite different toughness properties at room temperature. The 0.21 pct Mo steel is quite ductile while the 1.03 pct Mo steel is rather brittle, as measured by the standard Charpy impact test. The alloys had been prepared by vacuum induction melting and chill casting in steel molds. The ingots were hammer-forged into 1/2-in.-sq bars from which tensile specimen blanks were cut. These blanks were first normalized under argon atmosphere at 1700°F and then reaus-tenitized and isothermally transformed at 1050°F to a bainitic microstructure. The chemical compositions, heat treatments, hardness measurements, and Charpy transition temperatures of the two steels are listed in Table I.

The principal events in the oil history of south Arkansas, north Louisiana and Mississippi in 1930 have been: In Arkansas, very little activity, except for discovery of deep oil production at Urbana, and completion of the first oil well in Miller County. In Louisiana, continued development of the Zwolle area, bringing production up to about 10,000 bbl. per day; practically complete development of the Carterville oil-producing area; discovery and drilling of the rather disappointing Holly area, and discovery of Trinity gas production at Sugar Creek, Claiborne Parish and Rodessa, Caddo Parish. In Mississippi, discovery of the Jackson gas field, in Hinds and Rankin counties. Proration of oil runs was not put in effect in these areas during 1930, because the natural decline of the older fields brought production below the demands of local markets. The only effect of the oversupply and low price of oil was the curtailment of some drilling which might otherwise have been done. Drilling in Arkansas reached the lowest stage since the discovery of oil, with less than 100 completions. Louisiana showed some increase in drilling over 1928 and 1929, but almost half of the wells were drilled primarily for gas rather than oil. As no review on north Louisiana production has been prepared since 1927, and there was none on south Arkansas for 1928, the developments of the three years, 1928, 1929 and 1930 are here briefly discussed.

IN order not to deviate from the proposed order both in speaking of melts and of things necessary for guns, I shall tell you at present the method by which iron balls are made. This is surely a very fine invention and a horrible one because of its very powerful effect. It is a new thing in warfare,* because (as far as I know) iron balls shot from guns were never seen in, Italy before those that King Charles of France brought here for the conquest of the Kingdom of Naples against King Ferrandino in the year 1495. Now, although I spoke to you briefly of these when I told you above of the purification of iron, it seems to me necessary to show you again in more detail here how they are made. Therefore I tell you that in addition to iron, bellows, blast furnace, and charcoal, it is necessary to have the moulds, without which they could not be cast. At first, when this work was begun in Italy, it was customary to make these moulds of bronze so as not to be obliged always to be making them of clay. Now the present masters cast the moulds of the same iron in order to save expense. Although I am aware that you should already know how to make these from the methods of moulding taught you before, still I shall tell you the method that is followed in making these, because in the practice of every particular thing there is some divergence from the general procedure. For these balls, first make a ball of wood or of clay, or have one made of lead or iron, round and of exactly the dimensions that you wish. This is if you wish to make only one in your mould; otherwise take as many as you wish it to contain. Bury half of this, or these, in a board or in clay and, having greased them with oil or lard, make a mould over them of plaster of Paris, or of clay if you have no plaster, exactly as you wish it to be in iron or bronze. Then make the other half opposite this. After having taken out the balls make little openings for the gates and vents and like- wise four holes for pegging the parts together. About eight years ago a comprehensive study of American timbers was begun in the U. S. Division of Forestry with a twofold object. On the one hand, it was desired to deternliiie the working-qualities of our numerous economically important timbers, and to furnish reliable standards of strength. 011 the other hand, it was intended to get a clearer insight into the properties and behavior of wood in general, with a view of establishing more rational methods in its use, and to furnish data for physical inspectioil which would permit an intelligent application of the standards of strength, and place upon a rational foundation the so-called " factor of safety," which is at present a mere baseless guess. The first object, namely, the establishment of standards for any given species, requires a very large series of tests, since Wood is an exceedingly variable substance, so much so that in the same tree a variation of 50 per cent. in strength may be found; hence the greater need of rational data of inspection. So far, the insufficient appropriations and facilities at our disposal have permitted us to establish really reliable standards for five species of southern conifers only. These have been deduced from nearly 20,000 tests. Besides these, 10,000 other tests have furnished indicatious regarding some two dozen other species. This work is now entirely abandoned, waiting for more prosperous times. The study of wood in general, however, can be carried on with smaller means, and has this year yielded not only very interesting, but highly important results, which will soon be published in detail. By contrast with viscometry and sedimentation, no actual measurements of the applicability of Stokes' law to steelmaking have ever been reported; instead, the proof for and against Stokes' law has been inferred from the frequently observed phenomenon that inclusions collect in the top scum and the bottom of ingots. As such proof is unsatisfactory, continued reference to Stokes' law in steelmaking, even as a model for calculating the terminal velocities of rising inclusions, should be avoided. In fact, all conclusions that have been reached regarding size, density, and viscosity on the flotation of inclusions could be made more rationally without Stokes' law. A worthwhile exception is that of Mitsche1 who in 1934 used Stokes' law to show not only the expected effects of size, density, and viscosity on flotation but also the beneficial effects of i) melting under a slag layer (now Electro Slag Refining); ii) treating melts with synthetic slags (Ref. 2 gives recent applications); iii) bubbling an inert gas through the melt (recent applications in Refs. 3 and 4); and iv) altering the solid/ liquid interface characteristics. At this point, it should again be emphasized that the boundary conditions for which Stokes' law was derived place enormous restrictions on the law but its application, as noted earlier, can yield useful results in some fields under certain conditions and within well-defined limits. This paper presents some of the results of a rock mechanics instrumentation program designed for, and implemented at. longwall panel 4N at the York Canyon Mine near Raton, New Mexico. The objective of this particular instrumentation program was to determine the response of the rock mass to longwall mining of a thick coal seam utilizing shield-type supports. Measurements were made in the rock along the ground surface, above the coal seam, in the coal seam, and immediately below the coal seam. Longwall test panel 4N had a total developed length of 762 m (2500 ft) and a face width of 168 m (550 ft), [Fig. 1]. The seam mining height in the panel area was approximately 3 m (10 ft). The average depth of overburden above the panel is 107 m (350 ft) although it ranges from 73-134 m (240-440 ft). Roof support at the face was provided by 116 Hemscheidt 320 HSL shields. These shield-type supports weigh 11.4 metric tons each.

Byproducts are more important to the copper mining companies than to the copper market. Copper ores frequently contain gold, silver, molybdenum, lead, zinc, and cobalt. With the increase in the prices of these metals copper mining has become more profitable. If byproduct prices remain high, additional firms will be attracted to the copper industry; the increased supply of copper will reduce the long-run copper price. However, this is unlikely to happen because the markets for the copper byproducts, especially molybdenum and cobalt, are small. Increased recovery from copper and other sources will depress the prices of these byproducts before the copper price is significantly affected. Should byproduct prices remain high, the copper market will both settle at a lower long-run price and be more unstable in the short run. Since changes in the copper price do not affect the entire earnings of a multi-metal mine, the copper price must fall further before such mines reduce output in the short run. Higher byproduct revenues will make copper supply less responsive to copper prices; shifts in copper demand will result in greater copper price fluctuations in the short run than they did before.

CERTAIN dusts are dangerous when inhaled, but most hazardous of all dusts are quartz or other forms of pure crystalline silica. The inhalation of dusts containing silica in combination with other elements gives rise to changes in the lung which differ from those produced by pure silica. As a generality, silicates are less dangerous than pure crystalline silica and vary greatly among themselves in harmfulness. Repeated analyses have shown that approximately 70 per cent of the total number of particles involved in any dust-producing operation are below 1 to 2 microns in diameter. (A micron is. approximately 1/25,000 in.) Similar studies of dusts recovered from silicotic lungs post mortem have demonstrated essentially the same size frequency distribu-tion, except that the upper limit of size retained in the air sacs is approxi-mately 10 microns. Experiments carried on by Gardner and the author have further demonstrated that greater changes were produced by a fixed weight of very fine quartz particles (2 to 3 microns and smaller) than by the same weight of slightly larger particles (8 to 10 microns). Any attempt to control a dust hazard should therefore be directed toward the removal from the working atmosphere of particles less than 10 microns in size, and particularly those below 3 microns. All industrial hygienists agree on this matter, but there remains considerable dispute as to the lower limit of particle size capable of causing injury. It has been gen-erally conceded, however, that particles of harmful dusts smaller than ¼ to ½ micron are not essentially concerned in the development of pulmonary fibrosis. This opinion is partly substantiated by the existence of large numbers of these small particles in practically all atmospheres that are, not associated with any known hazard. Such particles are so small that they have very little mass, fail to settle even in quiet air, and probably are not easily retained in the lung. Until further research proves that they are involved in the dangers provoked by the inhalation of certain dusts, engineers will generally agree that it is better to dis-regard them.

Coal mine refuse handling traditionally has been the redheaded stepchild of the industry-a problem to be ignored as much as possible. During the past few years, however, mining companies have become more aware of the potential water pollution problem associated with refuse handling and storage. Planning for refuse disposal involves environmental protection and the economics of refuse handling. For over two years, Monterey Coal Co. has operated a non-polluting refuse disposal system at its No. 1 Mine located in Brushy Mound Township of Macoupin County 6 miles south of Carlinville, Illinois. Drainage goes to Spanish Needle Creek and eventually to the Illinois River. The mine produced 3.5 million tons of clean coal during its first two and one-half years of operation and is designed to produce 3 million tpy of clean coal at capacity.
