Pore volume compresibilitieu measured in the laborutory on core .samples are reported for typical reservoir .sarrrl.rtorres at reservoir pressure. These cornpressibilities ore different for each reseriloir sample and cannot be correlated to porosity. The compressihilities are a1so functions of presslire. In recent years several authors have pointed out the importance of including pore volume compressibility of the reservoir rock in certain reservoir engineering calculations. Hall' showed that in calculating the hydrocarbon volume of an undersaturated reservoir from the production per unit change in reservoir pressure, the neglect of rock compressibility could, in the extreme case of low porosity rock, lead to results in error by a factor of two. Hawkinsl' and Hobson and Mrosovsky showed that both rock and interstitial water compressibilities must be included to achieve satisfactory accuracy in this calculation. Although rock compressibility is an important reservoir property in these calculations, very few data are available. Hall' made compressibility measurements on a few samples in a small pressure range. No other direct pore volume compressibility measurements have been reported. Geertsma' discussed the elasticity of reservoir rock but did not present any new data. In this paper, rock compressibilities suitable for reservoir calculations are reported for a variety of sandstones typical of U. S. reservoirs. The measurements were made through a range of pressures which is also typical of reservoirs. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Plugs 1 in. in diameter and 2- to 3-in. long were diamond drilled, 14 from cores from seven oil-bearing or potentially oil-bearing sandstone, one from a quarried sandstone, and another from a shallow, oil-free, pure orthoquartzite. The plugs were extracted in toluene, vacuum dried, and then weighed. The plugs were then saturated with kerosene and reweighed. This gave pore volume. They were then again extracted in toluene. vacuum dried, and jacketed in 0.004-in. thick copper foil. A short length of -in high pressure tubing led from the jacket. The jacketed sample was then saturated with kerosene and placed in the hydraulic pressure cell as shown in Fig. 1. Movement of the mercury slug showed the change in pore volume of the sample under a given pressure change. Temperature was about 72" F for all measurements. Before taking any measurements, the external pressure on the sample was raised to 10,000 psig and kept there for several hours. This formed the thin copper jacket around the plug. 7-he pressure was then removed and the sample left at least overnight, during which time it recovered its original pore volume. An external pressure of 12,000 psig was then applied and held constant. The change in pore volume was noted as the internal pressure was raised in 1,000 psig increments to 10,000 psig. The internal pressure was then reduced to zero, again noting pore volume changes,

INTRODUCTION THE small domestic underfeed stoker as now designed is unusually sensitive to the coking and plastic properties of coals, and when the attempt is made to burn the high rank coking and caking coals of the Appalachian fields, serious trouble may occur. Part of the trouble may be caused by the ash content and clinkering characteristics of the particular coal in use, but more often it is the result of an excessive accumulation of coke in the form of "trees" or masses in the fuel bed. Often the zone of burning becomes so restricted that the fire goes out, and in extreme cases the fire may be lifted completely out of the fuel bed and away from the air ports. Even if the fire is preserved, excessive coking may cause response to subsequent heat demand to be slow and irregular. Coke trees seem to grow. most readily during periods of hold-fire operation, so that in order to preserve the fire in mild weather it is often necessary to set the timer for such a long operating period each hour that much unneeded and unwanted heat is developed, causing discomfort. During demand periods the fire may pick up so slowly that the intense burning which develops just before stoker cut-off causes a serious overshooting of the thermostat. Stoker coal performance tests which have been made in a number of laboratories 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 are one method of approach to the problem of selecting stoker coals. As yet these tests have not been standardized and they are expensive and time-consuming. The value of the results probably increases with the length of the test. Sherman and co-workers at Battelle Memorial Institute believe that even a one-week test is not too reliable a trial2 and it is quite likely that others will agree. A great advantage of such tests is that characteristics of coals, other than the tendency to form coke masses, may be evaluated from them. The selection of stoker coals would be greatly facilitated if there existed some simple measure of the tendency of a coal to form coke in a fuel bed. Although possessing all of the disadvantages of any small-scale laboratory test, the test for the free-swelling index of coal has been found useful for evaluating the probable effects of swelling properties upon combustion. 7 Ostborg, Limbacher and Sherman, have shown that the test can predict, roughly, the tendency of coke to accumulate in the fuel bed of a domestic stoker. They also gave instances of its value in predicting combustion behavior in some large installations. The use of the test for free-swelling index has become well established and has been adopted as a standard by the American Society for Testing Materials.8 When domestic stoker coal investigations began at the State Mine Experiment Station in the summer of 1944, it was decided

Diphenyl guanidine is used as an accelerator in vulcanizing rubber. Other rubber accelerators are also flotation collectors, e.g., dithiocarbamate, thiazole, and the xanthates. Urea and its derivatives are good flotation collectors,' and guanidine is the nitrogen analog of urea. These two characteristics suggested testing diphenyl guanidine as a flotation collector. Diphenyl guanidine has been tried in flotation work previously, but references give no details.'.' Bunker Hill Co. of Kellogg, Idaho, supplied the ore sample used in these tests. The sample was typical of the ore milled in 1949 and contained 4.52 pct Pb and 1.08 pct Zn. A flotation test made by the author with potassium ethyl xanthate as a collector, the same flotation reagents, and the same grind employed in regular Bunker Hill mill practice was the standard for comparing results with the compounds and derivatives of guanidine. The compounds and derivatives of guanidine are only fair collectors of galena. However, if potassium ethyl xanthate were used in the galena float, its presence later in the sphalerite float would make it impossible to introduce another type of collector and be certain which collector contributed the result, so the compound or derivative of guanidine under test was used in both the galena and sphalerite floats in Table I. On both the galena and the sphalerite in the Bunker Hill ore, the depressing action of sodium cyanide and zinc sulfate is much greater with collectors of the guanidine type than with the xanthates. If the depressing agents are left out when a guanidine type of collector is used, but a pH of 8.6 is maintained with either lime or sodium carbonate, the depressing action is approximately the same as in the standard xanthate test. Consequently the depressing agents, sodium cyanide and zinc, were not used in the galena floats of tests 1226, 1228, and 1286, Table I, so the galena floats would be on a comparable basis with the standard xanthate test. As shown by the tests in Table I, the loss in the tail when diphenyl guanidine is used is 8.3 to 9.3 pct, as compared to 17.6 pct with potassium ethyl xanthate, or a recovery of 2.3 to 2.0 lb more zinc. Concentrate grade is 13.7 pct with potassium ethyl xanthate and increases to 22.9 and 31.8 pct with diphenyl guanidine, showing a much higher selectivity. Unless the Barrett's No. 4 coal tar creosote is considered to be a collector, no collector other than diphenyl guanidine is present in the tests, Nos. 1226, 1228, and 1286. Tests 1218, 1253, and 1263 in Table I1 were run to check the effect of the depressing agents used in flotation of the galena (sodium cyanide and zinc sulfate) upon subsequent flotation of sphalerite by diphenyl guanidine. Urea was substituted for potassium ethyl xanthate in tests 1253 and 1263 because it is a good collector for galena and a poor one for sphalerite, and the effect of the depressing agents is more marked with urea than with potassium ethyl xanthate. Test 1205 checks the effect of urea alone without any depressing agents when used for the flotation of galena. Table I1 shows that diphenyl guanidine as a collector for sphalerite is compatible with other flotation reagents used in floating galena. When the depressing agents sodium cyanide and zinc sulfate are used in the galena flotation step, the amount of lime in the sphalerite flotation must be increased (compare 1253 and 1263). Table I11 gives some of the compounds of guanidine which were tested and compared. Those tested were fed dry. When an organic collector is promising, its compounds and derivatives should be tested and their comparative collecting power recorded. Eventually, in this way, it may be possible to discover some of the essential chemical characteristics of a good collector. For example, it is interesting to compare the diphenyl and dibutyl derivatives in Table IV with those of urea in Table 111, Example 3, U. S. Patent 2,664,198. All are good collectors. A unique freeze conditioning agent (FCA) which functions by forming structurally weak ice rather than suppressing the freezing point of water has been successful in alleviating frozen coal problems. Frozen coal treated with FCA has been quickly unloaded at temperatures below -17.8OC (O°F). Other applications of FCA include deicing: conveyor belts, idler, idler arms, and other moving parts that have been impeded by ice.

The slvuclures of alloys in the system In-Bi have been investigated after (levy vapid queuching from the mell (splat cooling) to -190°C. Tuo-phase fields could be suppressed over most of the tota1 concentvalion range; five melastable phases a1, a2, ?, ?1. and ß exisl, of which four have simple elementtike structures. For example, ß has the A5 struclure of white till. Crystal-tographic data and coordination numbers for these phases aye given, as well as addilional information on the equilibrium diagram, where a new phase In5Bi3 teas found. THE phase diagrams of binary combinations of B elements from the groups B2, B3, B4, and B5 are usually of a simple type and show considerably fewer intermediate phases than combinations of these elements with A metals, transition metals, or the B1 noble metals. Aside from phases such as the typical B3-B5 compounds with the ZnS-B3 structure type, few stoichiometric phases are known; among them are In2Bi and 1nBi.l Nonstoichiometric phases include ß (In-Sn), a1, (In-Pb), and the tin-rich ? phases in the In-Sn, Cd-Sn, and Hg-Sn systems.' The first two phases have a close relationship to indium, while the latter group are known to be structurally related to a Sn. Thus, there are generally no immediate experimental data for the correlation of the crystal structures of B metals and B metal combinations with certain monotonously varying parameters, such as the valence electron concentration (VEC), or the average atomic size. Such parameters have been recognized as structure determining, e.g., for the transition 4 Sn — y phase,2,3 where nonintegral valence electron concentrations are encountered. It should be possible to extend such correlations to other binary systems, if nonequilibrium single-phase alloys could be produced over broad valence electron concentration ranges, and if their crystal structures could be regarded as being imposed by their electronic states. It has been shown in the case of the tin-rich 7 phases3 that alloy phases with typical crystal structures can be produced in B metal alloys rapidly quenched from the liquid to -190°C by the splat cooling technique due to Duwez,3-8 and reviewed in Refs. 5 and 6. The In-Bi system was selected because it extends over a valence electron concentration range in which several metastable, nonstoichiometrir phases could be expected to occur. Further, the low melting points of the known intermediate phases, In2Bi and InBi, Fig. 1(a), indicated low binding energies and thus possibly low driving forces for the formation Of the equilibrium structures. EXPERIMENTAL TECHNIQUES AND RESULTS The preparation of the quenched foils followed the practice described in Ref. 3. Master alloys were produced by melting of indium (99.97+) and bismuth (99.99+) in evacuated Vycor capsules or in an inert gas arc furnace; quantities of 20 mg were splat-cooled onto copper and silver substrates held at - 190°C; and crystal structures and lattice parameters were determined on a GE XRD-5 diffractometer using Cu Ka, radiation at -190°C and at room temperature. The duplication of each run with both substrates permitted the elimination of overlap of the substrate diffraction pattern and that of the investigated substance. The XRD patterns were usually taken from sin2 " = 0.03 to 0.35; the substrate was used as a means of internal calibration. The fractional accuracy of the lattice parameters of metastable phases is approximately 10-3 In the following, all percentages are in atomic percent. The stable and metastable phases found after rapid quenching to -190°C are listed in Table I, together with estimated concentration ranges and crystallographic data. The investigated alloys and phases present in them are given in Table 11. Except for the region between indium with 33 and 50 pct Bi, where a revision of the equilibrium phase diagram became necessary to include a new stoichiometric phase In5Bi3, the diffraction patterns taken after heating to room temperature agreed with those expected from the phase diagram, Fig. l(a). This suggests that the new nonstoichiometric phases are not stable at room temperature, thus following the observations made for the y phases based on tin.3 Results concerning the equilibrium phases In2Bi and In5Bi3 and the revision of the equilibrium phase diagram which is made necessary by the inclusion of In5Bi3 will be treated first. The Crystal Structure of In2Bi. Makarov7 had identified In2Bi as belonging to the AlB2-C32 type ; however, in a later paper the structure was revised.8 In2Bio was found to be of the Ni21n-B8ß type,21 with a = 5.496A, c = 6.57.9A, and N = 6 atoms per unit cell.9 This crystal structure was confirmed in the present work; definite evidence for the doubling of the c axis, as compared to the A1B2-C32 type, and for the proposed order structure, was found in the powder pattern. The observed lattice parameters agree well with those of Ref. 8; those measured at -190°C are given- in Table I. The Crystal Structure of In5Bi3. A new, equilibrium, intermediate phase was identified in slow-cooled, as-cast alloys; it was identified as In5Bi3. The structure has been worked out by Giessen and Grant;" lattice parameters at -190°C are given in Table I. This phase is probably identical with "In3Bi2", produced by vapor deposition techniques, but not recognized as an equilibrium phase by Palatnik et a1.11 After completion of the present work, the existence of In5Bi3 has also been demonstrated by superconductivity measurements on In-Bi alloys.20

In a gold standard world which possesses insufficient metal to meet the every-day needs of all, confidence becomes the vital factor, the very foundation upon which the machinery for the expansion of gold into currency, and credit, rests. The gold supply, affected by many influences, moves constantly from one point to another, but not always to that point where it is most needed. In the period 1928-1930, the combined gold holdings of the United States and France increased $1,370,936,-000, and this with new gold adding only $600,000,000 to the monetary gold stock.Theref ore, the gold stocks of other countries must have been depleted during the period by $770,936,000. This uncontrolled shifting throws the delicately adjusted instrumentalities of both credit and commerce out of equilibrium. If a given nation's gold stock shifts so as to bring it substantially below the legal reserve ratio set up against it for currency issues, the effect can easily extend to the currency issues and banking credit volume of one or more nations which may have based their gold exchange standards upon the gold stock of such nation. Thus the substitution of paper based on gold in place of the actual gold is an inflation of the currency, which carries through into an uncontrolled pyramiding upon the entire machinery of credit based on gold. In 1929 Europe, South America, Africa and Asia had overissued currency based on gold. America, Oceanica and Japan, which have not overissued their gold currencies, would in normal times require their entire present gold stocks and, as Continental Asia is largely upon a silver credit basis, from a domestic standpoint, it would appear that the gold problem is not so much one of maldistribution, as it is one of inadequate supply. It would appear that some method of increasing greatly the velocity of gold, within the safe reserve point, should be devised, or that silver, of which estimates indicate that 7,000,000,000 oz. are available for

PREVIOUS investigations into convective flow in molten metals have examined systems in which the length-to-height ratio of the enclosure is large, usually using long graphite boats.''2 In normal castings this ratio is generally small and it is not possible to extrapolate the results of previous work to casting configurations. The present investigation was undertaken to examine liquid flow in systems of low length to height ratio. The apparatus used for the experiments is shown in Fig. 1. The molten zone of tin is contained in an aluminum mold of inside dimensions 6.4 by 6.4 by 0.31 cm. A heating block containing a resistance coil is attached to one end of the mold and a cooling block is attached to the other end. These are used to produce a wide range of temperature differences across the mold. The mold is contained in a stainless steel tank which is heated from the outside by resistance heaters to give the required operating temperature during the experiment. Temperature measurements in the molten tin are made with an iron-constantan thermocouple PT equal to 5 atm. The phase diagram derived by us was the same as that found by Krivsky and Schuhmann, except for a similar discrepancy in one boundary line representing the gas composition in equilibrium with SO a. The vapor pressures of the pure components can be neglected at 1700°K, 1 atm and 2500°K, 5 atm. There-fore, in these cases PT is essentially the total pres-sure in the system. This is valid for all the diagrams presented by Krivsky and Schuhmann except for the one at 2500°K and 0.01 atm, where the vapor pressure of silicon is comparable to PT.6 This work was supported in part by the American Iron and Steel Institute. (New York Meeting, February, 1912.) THE Ashio copper-mine of the Furukawa Mining Co. is situated 18 miles from Nikko, and 109 miles north of Tokyo, near the center of Japan. The mine-waters are run over scrap-iron, whereby most of the copper is precipitated as cement copper, leaving iron sulphate with some copper sulphate in solution. After using in the wet concentrating ore-dressing plant, the waste water contains clay and ore-slimes. The only avenue of disposal of this water is the Watarese river; but as this flows through valleys in which the water is used for irrigating the rice-crops, it is necessary to purify and clarify the water before discharge. The water amounts to from 600 to 700 cu. ft. (from 17 to 20 cu. m.) per minute, and averages about 0.00025 per cent. of copper, representing more than 18 tons of copper per month. The water carries H2SO4, FeSO4, Fe, (SO,),, CuSO4 and other metallic sulphates in solution, and clay, ore-fines, slimes and basic. iron sulphates as suspended matters. To purify and clarify the water, precipitation by milk of lime has been used, in three different ways, as follows: I. First Method, Copper not Recovered. Milk of lime was run into the water, and the mixture run through six settling-ponds, and then through a sand filter into the river. Fig. 1 is a view of the settling- and filtering-ponds. In the first pond, sand and metallic hydrates free from copper collected; in the next five ponds, slime, calcium sulphate, and metallic hydrates carrying copper settled out. Potential applications for boom tunnelling machines requires reliable assessment of in-situ performance. The majority of existing classification schemes concentrate on the prediction of excavation rate, neglecting the important influence of tool consumption rates. A statistical approach is taken to the analysis of the performance data, which was obtained first-hand through in-situ monitoring, and laboratory testing of representative rock samples. A statistical discrimination technique is used to produce a scheme for the prediction of performance groups, each of which covers a limited range of cutting rate and/or tool consumption rate.

This paper concerns field experiments to define the areal extent, orientation and thickness of an artificial fracture in the Sacatosa field, Maverick County, Tex. The fracture was made by a sand-oil treatment of 176,-000 gal of lease crude containing a fluid-loss additive and 270,000 lb of 20-40 mesh subangular Poteet sand. The well was perforated with a jet gun, consisting of six shots in a single plane. Fourteen test holes were drilled at various locations around the fractured well. Drill-stem tests, Micro and Sonic Logs, coring and sampling of formation cuttings were used to determine the presence of the fracture in these holes. The test holes were drilled at distances up to 250 ft in a radial pattern around the fractured well. In addition to fracture areal extent and orientation, sand grain size before and after fracturing, erosion of perforations and fracture thickness were studied. INTRODUCTION The orientation,12 areal extent3, 4 and thickness5-9 of artificially induced fractures in reservoir rock by hydraulic means have been discussed in great detail in the oil industry in recent years. Methods for initiating vertical"' and horizontal" fractures have been tested in the laboratory and the field. Although the methods used give successful well stimulation, good field data on the physical characteristics of the fracture are lacking in the literature. It is recognized generally that properties of a fracture, such as thickness, sand placement in the fracture" and shape, may vary from reservoir to reservoir. This paper gives data on size, orientation and sand placement in a large fracture initiated in a single plane in Sacatosa field, Maverick County, Tex. It is not intended as a speculative study; rather, it is restricted to actual field data on fracture properties. No attempt is made to prove that the same type of fracture occurs in all wells. The field procedure was to drill 14 test holes at various locations around the fractured well. By employing several different testing techniques, the presence of the fracture and some of its characteristics were determined. These techniques as well as the results obtained are discussed in detail in this paper. DESCRIPTION OF FRACTURE TREATMENT N. J. Chittim Well No. 37-1, completed in the San Miguel No. 1 sand, Sacatosa field, Maverick County, Tex., was chosen for the field study. The San Miguel sand is a tight, well consolidated sandstone with an average porosity of 23 per cent. The permeability ranges from 0.1 to 10 md, with a median permeability of 2.3 md. The sand thickness averages 23 ft and is located at depths of 1,150 to 1,700 ft throughout the field.I3 The fracture treatment performed on Well 37-1 was as follows. 1. The well was drilled to a depth of 1,438 ft with native mud, and 51/2-in. casing was set and cemented to the surface. 2. The casing was perforated at 1,349 ft with a fracture-initiating jet gun. This gun consists of six shots, 7/16-in. diameter in a single horizontal plane. The jets were oriented in two groups of three, 180" opposed. The perforating device was designed to initiate a fracture perpendicular to the wellbore.

The effect of various plastics upon the permeability of a sand and the mechanism of their ensuring permeability within the consolidated sand body is discussed. Data are presented on various properties of the plastic materials used in sand consolidation and the effect of temperature and usable temperature ranges are considered. The recovery of petroleum from uncon-solidated sands presents serious production problems, owing to sloughing of the formation. The solution of some of these problems usually has been by mechanical methods.' The ideal way of controlling the sloughing tendencies of these un consolidated formations, however, is to prevent the movement of the individual sand grains by the use of a bonding medium. A step in the desired direction was taken by Irons and Stcesser2 when they taught the use of liquid plastics to produce a consolidating deposit that prevents sloughing. More recently, Wrightsman and Buckley3 proposed a modification of this process. In this use of the liquid plastic, the sand grains become coated and the ensuing hardening of the plastic by polymerization or condensation cements together the sand Particles. Liquid plastics that have been suggested for this Purpose are of the following types: phenolformaldehyde, alkyd resins, vinyl type resins, polystyrene and the acrylic esters. The effect of various plastics upon the permeability of a sand and the mechanism of their ensuring permeability within the consolidated sand body is discussed. Data are presented on various properties of the plastic materials used in sand consolidation and the effect of temperature and usable temperature ranges are considered. The recovery of petroleum from uncon-solidated sands presents serious production problems, owing to sloughing of the formation. The solution of some of these problems usually has been by mechanical methods.' The ideal way of controlling the sloughing tendencies of these un consolidated formations, however, is to prevent the movement of the individual sand grains by the use of a bonding medium. A step in the desired direction was taken by Irons and Stcesser2 when they taught the use of liquid plastics to produce a consolidating deposit that prevents sloughing. More recently, Wrightsman and Buckley3 proposed a modification of this process. In this use of the liquid plastic, the sand grains become coated and the ensuing hardening of the plastic by polymerization or condensation cements together the sand Particles. Liquid plastics that have been suggested for this Purpose are of the following types: phenolformaldehyde, alkyd resins, vinyl type resins, polystyrene and the acrylic esters. The finite element method was originally developed in the aircraft industry to handle problems of stress distribution in complex airframe configurations. This paper describes how the method can be extended to problems of transient flow in porous media. In this approach, the continuum is replaced by a system of finite elements. By employing the variational principle, one can obtain time dependent solutions for the potential at every point in the system by minimizing a potential energy functional. The theory of the method is reviewed. To demonstrate its validity, nonsteady-state results obtained by the finite clement method are compared with those of typical boundary value problems for which rigorous analytical solutions are available. To demonstrate the power of this approach, solutions for the more complex problem of transient flow in layered systems with crossflow are also presented. The generality of this approach with respect to arbitrary boundary conditions and changes in rock properties provides a new method of handling problems of fluid flow in complex systems. INTRODUCTION Problems of transient flow in porous media often can be handled by the methods of analytical mathematics as long as the geometry or properties of the flow system do not become too complex. When the analytical approach becomes intractable, it is customary to resort to numerical methods, and a great variety of problems have been handled in this manner. One such method relies on the finite difference approach wherein the system is divided into a network of elements, and a finite difference equation for the flow into and out of each element is developed. The solution of the resulting set of equations usually requires a high speed computer. When heterogeneous systems of arbitrary geometry must be considered, however, this approach is sometimes difficult to apply and may require large amounts of computer time. The finite element method is a new approach that avoids these difficulties. It was developed originally in the aircraft industry to provide a refined solution for stress distributions in extremely complex airframe configurations. 27 Clough has recently reviewed the application of the finite element method in the field of structural mechanics.6 The technique has been applied successfully in the stress analysis of many complex structures.l, 27, 28 Recognition that this procedure can be interpreted in terms of variational procedures involving minimizing a potential energy functional7 leads naturally to its extension to other boundary value problems. In the field of heat flow, there recently have been introduced several approximate methods of solution that are based on variational principles.2-4, 17 By employing the variational principle in conjunction with the finite element idealization, a powerful solution technique is now available for determining the potential distribution within complex bodies of arbitrary geometry. In the finite element approximation of solids, the continuum is replaced by a system of elements. An approximate solution for the potential field within each element is assumed, and flux equilibrium equations are developed at a discrete number of points within the network of finite elements. For the case of steady-state heat flow, the technique is completely described by Zienkiewicz and Cheung.33 Since the flow of fluids in porous media is analogous to the flow of heat, Zienkiewicz et al. have employed the finite element method in obtaining steady-state solutions to heterogeneous and anisotropic seepage problems. 34 Taylor and Brown have used this method to investigate steady-state flow problems involving a free surface.25 The work of Gurtin has been instrumental in laying the groundwork for the application of finite element methods to linear initial-value problems.12 As a result, Wilson and Nickell have recently

From rolling textures of polycrystalline AgCl determined as a function of temperature, changes in the amounts of the individual textural components are correlated with temperature-dependent changes in glide geometry. The preferred orientations are influenced by the slip behavior as follows: 1) pencil glide, characterized by (110) slip directions and a greater participation in the deformation the higher the temperature, leads to a(012) fiber texture; 2) low-temperature deformation, primarily on (110) (110) systems, generates the {237}-(11, 9, 7) component; and 3) slip on {111}(110), comprising a significant portion of the room-temperature deformation, generates the {135}(211) and {110}(112) components. Typical re crystallization textures are also presented and briefly discussed. SPECIFIC relations between flow mechanisms in crystals and the individual orientations or components in deformation textures are necessary for a thorough understanding of the origin of such textures. Within each ordinary class of crystal struc- tures there is insufficient variety in the observed preferred orientations to permit direct and unambiguous correlation between flow mechanism and texture. A second approach to this problem is the correlation of textural changes with some known variation in glide geometry within one substance,1 In this paper, the latter approach is applied directly to a material in which there are distinct changes in the character of glide with changes in temperature. Silver chloride, although a nonmetal, is reported to exhibit slip,2,3 fiber textures,4 and rolling textures5,6 crystallographically similar to those of the well-studied fcc metals;7,8 in addition, there is a marked temperature sensitivity of the glide planes upon which flow occurs.3 Previous investigations of textures in AgCl unfortunately did not employ methods sufficiently sensitive to define possibly important minor components in the texture, nor did they utilize the temperature dependence of the glide systems. Thus, in order to clarify the effects of changes in slip mechanism, this paper reports a survey, using semiquantitative methods, of preferred orientations in rolled AgC1. Inasmuch as the influence of prior deformation texture upon preferred orientations after annealing is also of interest, some representative annealing textures are presented.

INTRODUCTION IN general, during all electrowinning processes, large volumes of gas are liberated at the cathodes of the electrolytic cells. Most of this gas escapes from the electrolyte, but much of it may be absorbed or entrapped in the metal being plated. In many cases, this is not objectionable, but since it is liberated when the metal is heated, it is a potential source of trouble where the metal has to be heated or melted. Since this gas is principally hydrogen, in escaping from a melt it may cause minor explosions and scattering of the molten metal, while in other cases it has been reported to make the metal rise in the molds when cast. Therefore such metals would be more generally useful if all or most of the gas were removed before they were used. In an earlier investigation' the gas content of electrolytic manganese was determined and methods found for removing most of it without detrimentally affecting the properties of the metal. In this paper results of a similar investigation on electrolytic chromium are presented. APPARATUS The apparatus used in these investigations is essentially the same as that used in the manganese work' and is shown in Fig I. It consists of sample chamber A, vacuum or pressure gauge B, volume gauge C, vacuum pump D, hydrogen container E, auxiliary gas chamber F, and furnace G. The pressure in the system is measured by the mercury manometer B. Changes in ' gas volume are measured by volume gauge C which is essentially another mercury manometer in which . the volume of the mercury column is large and can be varied by raising or lowering the well H. In this apparatus the tube had a volume of 100 cc for a 61 cm length. Larger changes in gas volume can be accommodated by auxiliary containers attached to the system at F. The sample is heated by furnace G, the temperature of which is regulated within ± 5°C by an automatic controller. The only change in the apparatus was the sample container which was made smaller because of the chromium metal's containing more gas than the manganese metal and a smaller sample was used. METHOD The measurements were made as follows: The complete system when cold was evacuated and refilled with H2 until all the air was removed. It was then refilled with H2 to the desired pressure, as indicated on manometer B. The temperature was then raised to the desired value and as gas was either liberated from or absorbed by the sample, the height of well H was changed to alter the volume of the system so as to keep the pressure constant. In determining rates of liberation of gas, volume readings were taken at convenient time intervals depending on the rapidity with which the gas was liberated. The Iraq Petroleum Co., Ltd. continued the systematic exploitation and exploration of its Kirkuk field, maintaining a carefully unitized operation. Bottom-hole pressure differentials and low gas-oil ratios were maintained. All crude was produced by flowing The cleaning up following the construction of the Mediterranean pipe line, which began deliveries in August, 1934, was completed during the first quarter of 1935. The line easily maintained its rated capacity for the remainder of the year. The Mosul Oilfields, Ltd., through its operating subsidiary, the B.O.D., Ltd., expanded its exploratory organization from 9 to 16 drilling rigs and discovercd 20" A.P.I. crude on the Sadid, Hibbarah and Qasab anticlines. Whether these discoveries will be commercial pools remains to be proved. The Qaiyarah-Najmah-Jawan field, which was discovered by the I.P.C. in 1928, was extended arid production was found in the Eo-Cretaceous as well as the "Main Limestone" (Eocene, Oligocene and Lower Miocene). Gas caps were found under each of the crests of the West Tigris structures. Negotiations are in progress between the Mosul Oilfields, Ltd. and the Iraq Government for the extension of the Anatolian Railway from the Turkish border to Mosul, with a view to tanking the heavy West Tigris crude to the Mediterranean. The subsidiary of the Anglo-Iranian Oil Co., Ltd.', the Khanaqin Oil Co., Ltd., continued to operate its Naft Khaneh field near the Iranian (Persian) border to supply the local Iraq market through the Rafidain Oil Co., Ltd. Somewhat more than 28 million barrels of crude was produced in Iraq during 1935. The Alta and St. Louis mines of the Alta Mines, Inc., produce a somewhat oxidized ore with a talc gangue that presents quite a problem in milling. For several years the mill recoveries were relatively low and there seemed to be no cure for this condition even with increasing the various collecting agents and frothers to two or three times of what they should be. The usual alibi of "oxidized ore" was given as the reason for these results and the matter stood there for some time until these investigations were started. Flowsheet As a brief outline of the flowsheet the ore is crushed to minus I in. in a Telsmith jaw crusher and then fed to a 64½ Marcy grate mill. The resulting product from the grate mill is passed over a trommel where the coarse particles (plus 7 mesh) are returned to the grinding circuit through the classifier. The under 7-mesh pulp is passed over two Denver mineral jigs where a high grade concentrate is produced, thence over two Wilfley tables where a table concentrate is produced and about 80 pct of the oxide lead recovered. The tailings from these tables are pumped back to the classifier and after classification the 30 pct pulp density product, which overflows the lip, is passed into a series of 10 Denver economy flotation cells where a lead-copper concentrate is produced. Three products are made and shipped to the smelter termed jig, table and float concentrates. Results with various Reagents In March of this year work was started on the metallurgical problems of the mill and, as is shown in Table I, the results obtained were not too efficient. Tests were run with various reagent combinations that were recommended for ores of this nature but there was no appreciable effect on the recoveries. The grades of the flotation concentrates were reduced by the insoluble picked up and retained by these more powerful collectors and frothers. Results with "Metso" In past work on ores of this type the use of "Metso" had improved gold and lead recoveries, but no effect on the silver and copper recoveries had been noted. To

Columnar grained specimens of nickel, containing 0.25 pct Si and 0.22 pct Mn, have been exposed to liquid bismuth in the temperature range 670° to 1050°C. Under isothermal conditions the liquid penetration rate is constant. The activation energy for the process is 22,000 cal per g-atom. Small amounts of plastic deformation, introduced into specimens prior to exposure, increase the penetration rate. The slou. step in liquid film penetration is associated with a reaction which occurs at or near the leading edge of the film. Either transfer of nickel across the liquid-solid inteqace or diffusion in the grain boundary ahead of the liquid film is suggested. Aliquid metal, if brought into contact with the surface of an unstrained solid metal, will usually penetrate to some extent into the grain boundaries of the solid. Under isothermal conditions the extent of penetration after any particular time of exposure is related to the relative magnitudes of the interfacial tensions concerned.1,2 If the liquid-solid interfacial tension is less than one-half the grain boundary tension the liquid may penetrate at a relatively rapid rate for an indefinite distance into the grain boundary surfaces. If the liquid-solid interfacial tension is greater than one-half the grain boundary energy, liquid penetration occurs at a continually decreasing rate so that after the liquid has penetrated to a relatively short distance below the surface the process essentially ceases.3 Many observations of a qualitative nature concerning inter crystalline attack by liquid metals have been reported, for example, liquid bismuth upon copper,' liquid mercury upon brass,4 and liquid mercury upon nickel.' Scheil and Schessl determined the rate of penetration of liquid bismuth into the grain boundaries of hot rolled copper rod? At constant temperature, penetration rate was found to be independent of the depth penetrated, the rate in- creasing with increasing temperature corresponding to an activation energy of 20,000 cal per g-atom for the process. It was suggested that at lower temperatures the liquid travelled mainly along lines of three grain intersections while at temperatures greater than 1000°C essentially all grain boundary surfaces were covered. Recently, in a study of copper bicrystals having a common [loo] axis it was found that at 649°C bismuth penetrated 22, 25, and 63 deg boundaries while it did not penetrate 2, 12, 15, and 72 deg boundaries.' Elbaum reported that liquid gallium penetrates aluminum grain boundaries to a depth of 0.6 cm after 11 hr at 27°c.8 Assuming that the rate controlling step in the process was diffusion down the liquid film to the specimen surface, a diffusion coefficient of 10-5 cm2 per sec was calculated.
