The steady-state creep behavior, in compression, of indium containing a dispersion of atomized glass particles was studzed over a range of temperature, stress, and composition. The observed behavior was not consistent with a simple model of dislocation climb over dispersed particles. From room temperature to about 100°C the temperature dependence could be described by an activation energy about one and a half times that of self-dijfusion in indium while at higher temperatures a much higher ternperature dependence was observed. THE value of dispersion-hardened and precipitation-hardened alloys has long been recognized. The mechanism of hardening, however, is not completely understood, especially at elevated temperatures where dispersed particles increase creep resistance. Following the suggestion of Schoeck1 that the rate of creep in dispersion-hardened materials is controlled by dislocation climb over second-phase particles, Ansel and weertman2 derived steady-state creep equations for dispersion-hardened materials. Their derivation was based on dislocation climb over non-deformable spherical particles in a metallic matrix. For low stresses they predicted a linear relation between applied stress and steady-state creep rate. For stresses large enough to cause dislocations to pinch off around the precipitate particles, the theoretical creep rate was shown to be proportional to the fourth power of stress. For very high stresses an exponential stress dependence was predicted. In all cases the theoretical creep rate is linearly proportional to the diffusion coefficient. This provided the primary temperature-dependent factor. Subsequently, Ansel and Lenel3 reported some experimental data on SAP, a composite of aluminum and aluminum oxide, that was in good qualitative agreement with the above theories. Their experimental creep rates, however, were four orders of magnitude less than the theory predicts. This was attributed to a low density of active dislocation sources in the material; somehow the dispersed particles inactivated the dislocation sources instead of merely interferring with dislocation motion. Meyers and sherby4 have recently reported on the creep behavior of SAP. Their results were inconsistent with a simple dispersion-strengthening model and led them to conclude that a continuous network of oxide controls the high-temperature mechanical characteristics of SAP. Because of the rather complex mechanical behavior of SAP and the lack of agreement about the morphology of its oxide phase, it appeared desirable to study the creep of a dispersion-strengthened material of controlled morphology. For the present work a dispersion of spherical glass particles imbedded in a matrix of indium was chosen. The microstructure of this material was similar to the idealized uniform dispersion of hard spheres in a deforming matrix assumed by Ansel and Weertman in their theoretical treatment. SPECIMEN PREPARATION For experimental convenience, it was decided to use a low melting-point metal in this investigation. It was necessary that the metal not be oxidized readily up to its melting temperature and that it wet the second-phase particles. It was desired that the material chosen for the dispersed phase be available as a fine powder with closely controlled size and shape. The material chosen to satisfy these requirements consisted of a matrix of indium metal containing a dispersion of atomized particles of a soft soda-lime-silica glass ranging from 5 to 30 µ in diam. The glass particles had a highly regular spherical shape. The composite was made by stirring the glass powder into liquid indium maintained at a temperature just above the melting point of indium, 156°C. The creep specimens were prepared by a hot pressing operation. Five to ten g of the mixture were placed in a steel die and pressed at 125°C for 5 min under a pressure of 30,000 psi. The resulting specimens were cylinders about 3/8 in. in diam and ranged from 0.4 to 0.7 in. high. By following this procedure a uniform dispersion was obtained in the creep specimens. Typical microstructures of specimens containing twenty and forty volume percent glass powder are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Unfortunately, grain size could not be determined by the metallo-graphic techniques used. CREEP TESTING PROCEDURE Creep tests were performed in compression under constant stress. THE important investigations of Dr. G. F. Becker at Steamboat Springs, Nev., in 1885, aided by the analytical work of W. H. Melville, established the fact that sulphides were being deposited at the surface by hot ascending waters.1 Steamboat Springs is situated near the eastern base of the escarpment of the Sierra Nevada, six miles distant from the Comstock lode. In a region of former volcanic activity, hot springs with a temperature of about 80° C. break forth through a fissure in granodiorite, and at the base of a basaltic bluff the waters have deposited a large amount of siliceous and calcareous sinter, some of which is colored red by antimony sulphide. The sinter from one of the springs was analyzed by Mr. Melville,2 and his results, re-calculated to grams per kilogram, showed [ ] The relative quantities of antimonious and arsenious sulphides are not given in the above analysis, but I believe that the former greatly predominated. The water of one of the springs was also analyzed by Melville and the re-calculation of this analysis to salts that were possibly present is given in Table I.

THOUGH recent months have seen a rapid decline in lead-smelting activity and consequent uncertainty as to the future, the first half of the year showed progress in keeping with similar activity in other metals. Demand for scrap increased and various lead-bearing materials found their way to plants producing secondary lead. Some of these materials introduced complications into normal smelting procedure and were the cause of many conferences among plant officials attempting to find the most satisfactory method of treatment. If a blast furnace is to do itself justice it must be run with an open charge. Troubles inevitably result when materials are added to a charge which tighten it up and pre- vent free burning of the coke and con- sequent rapid smelting with a clean hearth This fact has long been recognized by plants producing primary lead, but only recently only it received the attention it deserves.

THE data given herein were first included in a paper read before San Francisco Section, A.I.M.E., in October 1940, and are applicable to conditions existing until the gold-dredging industry was temporarily suspended by Order L-208 of the War Production Board in the fall of 1942. There is no doubt that gold dredging will be resumed at some future time, and on a scale equivalent to that of the recent past, but the cost data given herein will be affected to some extent by conditions existing at that time, and by labor rates and prices for materials then prevailing. DRAGLINE VS. BUCKET-LINE Dragline dredges should not be considered for mining large areas of low-grade placer gravel. In such deposits a dragline operator with a 5-cu. yd. dragline would be doing well to maintain an operating cost of 6¢ per cu. yd., while a bucket-line dredge with buckets no smaller than 7 cu. ft. each could be operated for less than 4¢ per cu. yd. By operating costs, I mean only field charges such as direct operating and overhead, which includes pay roll, power or fuel, repairs and maintenance, insurance, land clearing and general expenses, but not including such items as prospecting, depletion, depreciation of equipment, State Franchise Tax, or Federal Income Tax. It is not to be inferred that a dragline dredge cannot make a profit in small low-grade deposits, where the extent of a given property is too small to justify the use of the more costly bucket-line dredge. Consider small deposits of 10¢ gravel. It is obvious that a deposit of 5,000,000 cu. yd. of such gravel could not be mined profitably with a new, 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge, costing upward of $250,000, and with operation costs at 4¢ per cu. yd., paying for land or royalties out of earnings; nor could a new combination 5-cu. yd. dragline and washing plant, worth upward of $125,000 and working at 6¢ per cu. yd., make a profit. These comparisons are made because the hourly capacity of both types of dredges is nearly the same. The bucket-line dredge averages 93 per cent operating time in 24 hr., as against about 80 per cent or less for the dragline dredge. These percentages of operating time are important factors in making a comparison of this kind. The bucket-line dredge has greater efficiency in cleaning soft bedrock, usually characteristic of dredging deposits, and a 7-cu. ft. bucket-line dredge can be efficient to a total digging depth of 80 ft. (65 ft. below water, 15 ft. above). A 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge is limited to about 30 ft. of efficient digging depth, 5 ft. of which could be above water. In small areas of gravel not over 30 ft. deep, a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge could make a profit where a bucket-line dredge could not do so. As an example: compare the dredging of 3,000,000 cu. yd. of 10¢ gravel 28 ft. deep with bucket line, costing 4¢ per cu. yd., and with a 5-cu. yd. dragline dredge operating at 6¢ per cu. yd. WHEN the word gas is mentioned in connection with mining, almost invariably it is inferred that the explosive gas, methane, is in mind and that it must refer to coal mining. While it is true that methane occurs, or is likely to occur, in almost any or all coal mines, it is also a fact that the metal mines of the world have in them by far a greater variety of gases than have the coal mines. In many cases the gases in metal mines are as dangerous to individuals as the gases likely to be found in coal mines; in some instances the metal mine gases are even more deadly. The coal mine is more likely to have methane than the metal mine, in rare instances it may have high percentages of nitrogen or high carbon dioxide, or there may be a deficiency of oxygen where the air is confined in a blind end or in a sealed region; much more rarely there are found in coal mines in relatively small percentages, ethane, or other hydrocarbons with odor of ether, gasoline or kerosene, or there may be minute percentages of hydrogen sulfide. In time of coal mine fire or explosion, there is likely to be high carbon monoxide (4 per cent. or over in some cases) and if the coal contains much sulfur, there may be some sulfur dioxide in the fire fumes. In metal mines there are a number of cases of occurrence of methane and attendant explosions; some metal mines have appreciable percentages of the decidedly explosive hydrogen; in some metal-mining regions carbon dioxide flows into the mine, fills the workings and overflows just like water. In other regions, at many working faces there are high-temperature gases containing a mixture of gases of sulfur (sulfur dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and possibly SO3 in some cases) together with carbon dioxide and nitrogen, and the deadly hydrogen sulfide in lethal proportions is found in some high-sulfide metal mines at blasting time. Carbon monoxide constitutes a decidedly dangerous day by day hazard in connection with metal-mine blasting, because of the heavy charges of dynamite that are used and the use of fuse, which in burning gives off much carbon monoxide. The poisonous gas hazard is accentuated because of the relatively small openings where metal-mine blasting is done and to the inefficient ventilation of the usual metal mine.

Activities of oxides in the ternary FeO-MnO-SiO system are calculated from data on the binaries, using the Gibbs -Schuhmann method. These activity data are used, together with thermodynamic relations, to calculate the contents of oxygen, silicon, and manganese in liquid iron, and the composition of the corresponding oxide phases in equilibrium with it. Excellent agreement was found between calculated and experimental metal compositions, indicating that thermodynamic methods, such as those presented, can supply useful data on slag-metal equilibria, and are therefore capable of wider application. When molten steel containing oxygen is treated with a deoxidizer, the product of the reaction is composed of the oxides of the deoxidizing elements together with more or less iron oxide. This assemblage of oxides is presumably very close to equilibrium with the melt since it is formed directly from elements dissolved in it. Therefore, it is likely that metal analyses corresponding to a given oxide phase composition are calculable with considerable precision where sufficient information is available on activities in both phases. The present study was made to test this hypothesis in the case of deoxidation by silicon and manganese. Here experimental data on the relationship among oxygen, silicon, and manganese in the metal phase are available, as are activity data for the MnO-SiO2, FeO-SiO2, and FeO-MnO binary systems. A further objective was to demonstrate in a specific example how gaps in the data may be filled by judicious interpolation, and how the Gibbs-Schuhmann method is applied to obtain activities in ternary systems. The rigorous derivation of the latter, requiring considerable facility in handling partial differential equations, tends to mask the real simplicity of the method, and repel the very engineers and experimenters who would benefit the most from its use. I) GENERAL PROCEDURE Deoxidation of steel with silicon and manganese results in the formation of two phases, metal and oxide. The number of components is four—Fe, Mn, Si, and 0. The phase rule then gives the number of degrees of freedom: If temperature and pressure are fixed, 2 deg of freedom remain. Consequently, it suffices to fix the concentration of two of the components of the system for all the concentrations to be determined and, at least in principle, calculable. The practical problem is then to discover a straightforward method of calculation with a minimum of trial and error solutions. The type of reactions to be dealt with are like the following: Si (in steel) + 2 O(in steel) = SiO2(in oxide phase) The standard free energy of this reaction is readily obtained from the literature, so that the equilibrium constant can be calculated by the expression: Since the metallurgist is concerned with percentages rather than activities, a real solution requires information that will permit activities to be converted to concentrations. This information is fairly adequate for the elements dissolved in molten steel, but is not available for the FeO-MnO-SiO2 oxide system. Therefore, the first step in this study was to find the relation between activity and concentration for the three oxides making up the system. The next step was the calculation of slag and metal compositions that are in equilibrium with one another. As shown by the phase rule, it is sufficient to assume the values of two composition variables in order to calculate the rest. But which two are picked makes a vast difference in how difficult the calculation turns out to be, so that it is necessary to make preliminary trial of several routes to find the easiest one. A convenient method is to begin with the slag, and to pick FeO concentration and that of one of the other oxides. Starting with the relation between oxygen dissolved in the liquid steel and FeO in the slag permits a good first estimate to be made of the oxygen content of the steel in equilibrium with FeO, because the iron content being fairly close to 100 pct, Fe has an activity close to unity. Using this first estimate of oxygen activity, approximate values of the manganese and silicon contents of the melt are readily calculated from the appropriate equilibrium constants. WITH seventeen papers submitted. and thirteen presented in three sessions, the geophysicists had a most successful meeting at New York in February. The first paper on Monday morning dealt with the location of a diabase dike near Chapel Hill, N. C., by magnetic and resistivity methods. The magnetic indications were pronounced directly over the dike. whereas the anomalies of apparent resistivity were less distinct and displaced away from the dike. G. A. Moore—The tin-fusion method has been a very favorable possibility for many years. The authors apparently have settled the question that delayed the method for a long time by showing that no hydrogen is absorbed in the tin. This, of course, is very important. I want to make a few remarks concerning the absolute accuracy of analysis, which must be the final basis for deciding among the various methods. From the figures in the paper, there seems to be some remaining slight discrepancy on the actual amount of hydrogen present in various samples which may be presumed essentially identical. (This is of the order of the precision of individual analyses but appears in averaged results.) From the analyst's viewpoint, the tally of hydrogen content can be regarded as occurring in three portions. First is a large portion which comes off easily and automatically during sample storage and later on heating in the apparatus. This is fairly easily analyzed. Second is an item which may be either positive or negative in the tally sheet. In warm or hot evolution, this is a portion which, in practice, can never be re-

THIS paper gives the results of an investigation of the specific resistance and temperature coefficient of the electrical resistance of nickel and its important alloy, monel metal. For most of the pure metals, the temperature coefficient of resistance is approximately 0.0004 per degree centigrade at 2.0° C. Nickel and iron, however, are exceptions. This property is important as it gives us good material for the construction of thermometers and other instruments involving electrical control. A summary of information on this subject has been published by the Bureau of Standards.1 The present experiments antedate this publication by several years and as the information obtained is not contained in it, the results of the experiments are published as additional information. ELECTRICAL PROPERTIES OF PURE NICKEL It is generally conceded that the lowest values for electrical resistance are obtained in the purest metal. In the case of nickel, the best material obtainable is electrolytic nickel, which contains approximately. 99.80 per cent. nickel, 0.15 per cent. iron, and 0.05 per cent. copper. Any cobalt that may be present is included in the nickel figure. If the electrolytic sheet has been deposited without intermission, it is possible to cut a section from the sheet and roll it into wire without melting. By this means a nickel wire may be obtained that is uncontaminated by any of the impurities always taken up by nickel during melting.

General Motors, with $20.7 billion in sales, heads the entire list, and a prominent member of the mining industry, Island Creek Coal, occupies the 500th spot with sales of $109.6 million. The lists of "industry medians" following mining's "Top 38" reveal how well the mining industry fared in 1965 in various salient categories of business performance.

A field neutron activation analysis technique suitable for determining uranium in ores has been tested. The method is based on the measurement of the 74.7 keV gamma ray from 'U. When the thorium/uranium ratio is greater than one or the vanadium is greater than 1%, a low uranium analysis is obtained. No satisfactory correction for thorium has been found, but a correction for vanadium can be deter¬mined. For ore containing greater than 0.01% uranium, the uranium can be deter¬mined with an accuracy of about 10% which is quite adequate for a field exploration technique.

The latter method corresponds with the direct effect. of low and high finishing-temperatures ; that is, a plus difference indicates low, and a minus difference high, finishing-temperature. I make this explanation to prevent confusion in comparing the two papers. Mr. Sauveur has shown that there is a close relation between the size of the grain and the ultimate strength, and also that the size of the grain depends on the temperature at which the material is finished in rolling, and on the chemical composition of the steel. In 1936 the Institute established the Anthony F. Lucas Gold Medal, which will be awarded from time to time "for distinguished achievement in improving' the technique and practice of finding and producing petroleum." These awards will be sponsored by the Petroleum Division. Captain Lucas was a pioneer in the oil industry, one of the early wildcatters and a leading mining and petroleum engineer. He was famous as the discoverer of Spindletop. He became a member of the Institute in 1895 and in 1913 was the first Chairman of the Petroleum and Gas Committee of the Institute, the forerunner of the present Petroleum Division. It consists of a refractory column into which air is injected at various levels, forming several superimposed fluidized beds with no supporting grates. When pelleted zinc sulphide concentrates are charged, the roasted product needs no further sintering before reduction to metal. WHEN a gas such as air is blown upward with increasing velocities through a loose mass of solid particles, marked changes in the physical behavior of the particles are noted. At first, when the velocity of the gas is insufficient to support any of the solid, the mass constitutes a "fixed bed." As the gas velocity increases until the pressure drop through the bed approaches the effective weight of the bed per unit area, the bed expands until the solid particles are supported by the air rather than by the lower particles. Some vibration of the particles becomes apparent, but little mixing occurs. This condition is called a "quiescent fluid bed." A further increase in gas velocity imparts more separation and more motion to the individual particles until a condition of turbulence is reached. This "turbulent fluid bed" resembles a rapidly boiling liquid with the characteristic highly agitated diffuse surface and many small eruptions of the boiling mass. Different degrees of turbulence can be generated and all produce excellent mixing. The final stage occurs when the gas velocity becomes so great as to create a "dispersed suspension." Here no surface of the mass is defined and the gas carries solid particles out of their original positions. These changing conditions of fluidization have been studied carefully and pertinent nomenclature standardized by a committee of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.' Many mathematical analyses2-3 have been made of the forces acting in a fluid bed. These analyses are invaluable, especially for the design of column sizes and selection of equipment. However, in a metallurgical process involving solids of many sizes with changing densities, varying temperatures, and changing gas compositions within the bed, calculations based on theory become approximate. Optimum operating conditions then are best determined experimentally. Many applications have been made of the principles of fluid-bed action by mechanical, chemical, and metallurgical engineers. Especially when good con- tact between reacting solids and gases is desired, very effective results are obtained from fluid beds. They permit excellent temperature control and uniformity throughout a mass of solids in fluid action. Heat transfer to walls and any coolers is high, and fast reaction rates are attained because the solid surfaces are continuously swept clean. The main disadvantages of fluid-bed operations are the danger of short-circuiting in a single bed, danger of incipient sintering which stops action, the necessity of avoiding large changes in particle size or density during roasting, and dust losses when particles of the charge are carried out with exit gases. In the metallurgical field the roasting of sulphide ores to form oxides and sulphur dioxide appears to combine several operating conditions which can be achieved to advantage in a fluid bed. Roasting involves a solid-gas reaction where a high reaction rate is necessary for high capacity, where good temperature control is important in order to prevent sintering, where good heat transfer is needed, and where the density of the solids, when changing from sulphides to oxides, is not largely changed. Short-circuiting, however, constitutes a major problem when a single fluid bed is used. Because of the turbulence of the bed, an entering particle may be in the region of the discharge before it is roasted. Hence, to attain a satisfactorily low sulphur in the calcine, a long average residence time with correspondingly low capacity is required. The solution to this difficulty is the use of multiple stages, which in the conventional fluid-bed design requires separate hearths with feed and discharge mechanisms for each stage. A further practical difficulty in fluid-bed roasting of flotation zinc concentrates is their fine particle size which makes a true fluid action without excessive carry-over of dust very difficult to attain, especially when the large air volumes necessary for high capacity are used. A New Design After considerable experimentation in the laboratory and on a semipilot-plant scale, a new method and equipment for roasting were devised which provided a unique solution to these problems. Operators of coal preparation plants use equipment such as large-capacity dump trucks and bulldozers to haul, spread, and compact refuse material to conform to federal and state regulations governing the disposal of solid waste. For example, federal regulations require that refuse be spread and compacted in layers not more than 0.6 m (2 ft) thick. If the refuse layers or piles have poor load-bearing characteristics, movement of equipment over them becomes extremely difficult. The increasing cost and limited space for the construction of settling ponds extensively used for fine refuse disposal are leading to the growing practice of dewatering the fine refuse by means of vacuum disk filters and combining the resulting filter cake with coarse refuse for waste bank disposal. However, this filter cake usually contains more than 25% moisture. Therefore, when it is combined with coarse refuse, the moisture level of the total refuse may become high enough to impair the load-bearing strength of the refuse. Precisely this problem and the attendant difficulties of moving heavy equipment arose when vacuum disk filters were installed at a preparation plant in West Virginia. Combining the moist filter cake with the coarse refuse generally results in a 12% moisture level for the total refuse at this plant. At this moisture level, the refuse can still be handled with some dif¬ficulty by the equipment. However, the problem has frequently been compounded after rains. The experimental program described in this paper tested the following methods of improving the load-bearing properties of coal refuse: moisture reduction, addition of crushed coarse refuse, addition of fly ash, addition of lime, and addition of a mixture of lime and fly ash. In terms of a balance between economic and technical considerations, the most effective method was demonstrated by laboratory and plant tests to be a 2% to 5% addition of lime. Test Program During formulation of a test program aimed at improving coal refuse stability, a number of treatment techniques were selected for evaluation of their effect on refuse load-bearing characteristics. The reduction of refuse moisture was the first technique considered, since moisture content plays a key role in the bearing strength of a bulk solid. The reasoning was that a very small reduction in refuse moisture, provided it could be accomplished with minimal effort and cost, would be sufficient for eliminating refuse disposal problems most of the time. At the same time, it was recognized that periods of rainy weather would offset moisture-reduction measures. Other techniques selected for evaluation because of their potential for improving refuse-bearing strength at reasonable cost were: addition of crushed coarse refuse, the addition of fly ash, and the addition of lime. A simple one-dimensional laboratory compaction test was designed for evaluating the effect of each of these techniques on refuse-bearing strength. Those techniques that gave best results in the laboratory would then be tested in the preparation plant in West Virginia. Laboratory Tests The laboratory test for evaluating each of the techniques involved the application of weight to a load module placed on a refuse sample in a container. The distance the load module sank with an increasing amount of applied weight was measured, and the relationship between module displacement and loading was obtained. The refuse container was large enough to minimize the influence of wall effects, and to decrease the effect of the container bottom, a test was terminated when the load module sank to about three fourths the depth of the container. Initially, an attempt was made to conduct compaction experiments with samples of total plant refuse. However, the presence of + 0.13 m (+ 5 in.) material in the refuse interfered with the mechanics of the test, and the large amount of material required for a representative sample made testing extremely tedious and time-consuming. To avoid this problem and because it was believed that only the fine components of the refuse were the major cause of the stability problem, tests were conducted with 13 mm X 0 (1/2 in. X 0) material from the total plant refuse. The equipment consisted of a 0.46 m (18 in.) cubic container, a loading module with 62 cm2 loading area, weights totaling 450 kg, and a portable concrete mixer for combining water and additives with the refuse. Refuse samples of about 110 kg dry weight were used for each test. Experimental compaction test data were evaluated by plotting the linear displacement of the load module vs. loading. A WIDE variety of lead ore is treated by the Midvale Smelter, for it is a custom plant not only treating Company lead concentrate and direct-smelting ores but also custom ores and concentrates, principally from Utah, Idaho, and Nevada, with lesser amounts from Arizona, California, Colorado, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. The principal operating departments of the plant are weighing and sampling, Wedge roaster, D&L sintering, blast furnace and drossing, and baghouse. The lead bullion produced is shipped to a subsidiary, the U.S.S. Lead Refinery, Inc., at East Chicago, while the by-products, such as matte and speiss, are shipped to other smelters or re-treated at the plant.

GAS as a factor in the efficiency of oil production, might be a better title for this paper as it deals in general with the significance of the gas-oil ratio as an index of the efficiency of oil production and briefly discusses oil production methods with reference to the gas-oil ratio in wells, particularly during the early life of a field. In the recent hearings held at Washington before the Federal Oil Conservation Board the fuller utilization of the energy contained in the gas occluded in or associated with the oil underground was stressed by some of the speakers when referring to greater ultimate recovery of oil. One speaker commenting on this point said in part, "There is ample evidence indicative that if the gas associated with the petroleum in our fields were conserved and elevated gas pressure maintained in the oil sands during their productive life, the ultimate production of oil could be greatly increased."
