This paper is in the nature of a rough preliminary report on the progress that has been made in the application of the mass spectrometer to various problems arising in the petroleum industry. A few years ago the authors considered a number of the problems that were arising in the qualitative and quantitative measurement of small amounts of hydrocarbons. The methods available of making analyses by chemical techniques appeared to leave much room for improvement. Without going into the reasons at this point, attention was turned to the possibility of employing physical instead of chemical methods of accomplish-ing the desired results. A preliminary investigation disclosed that the mass spectrometer presented a possibility of solving many problems which could not easily be accomplished by other methods. Work was begun in developing the necessary apparatus and technique. A great deal of encouragement and many valuable suggestions were received from Dr. Robert A. Millikan, Dr. W. R. Smythe, and Dr. W. N. Lacey, of the California Institute of Technology, and from Dr. E. 0. Lawrence, who recently received the Nobel Prize, of the University of California. The authors particularly wish to acknowl-edge the very great willingness of these out-standing scientists to be helpful in solving many of the problems that were involved. So far as the authors are aware, this was the first application of the mass spectrometer to commercial work. The results were considerably better than had at first been anticipated. Briefly, it is pos-sible to run a qualitative and quantitative analysis of an unknown mixture of hydro-carbon gases, with an accuracy of better than plus or minus 5 per cent of each of the various constituents. An exceedingly high degree of sensitivity has been obtained, and a relatively short time is required to com-plete an analysis. Furthermore, it is un-necessary to separate a mixture of gases into its various components in order to complete the analysis.

PRIOR work on the Zr-Cu phase diagram by Alli-bone and Sykes,' Pogodin, Shumova, and KUGU cheva,' and Raub and EngeL3 as confined largely to copper-rich alloys. The investigations of Raub and Engel were the most recent and seemingly the most complete of these. Alloys from 0 to 68.3 pct Zr were studied principally by thermal analysis and microscopic examination. These authors reported an inter metallic compound ZrCu, (1116°C melting point) and two eutectics, one at 86.3 pct Cu (977°C mp) and the other at 49 pct Cu (877°C mp). The solubility of zirconium in copper was reported to be less than 0.1 pct at 940°C. The zirconium melting stock consisted of Westing-house "Grade 3" iodide crystal bar (nominally 99.8 pct pure). It was treated by sand blasting and pickling (HF-HNO, solution) to remove the surface film of corrosion product, resulting from grade designation tests. The crystal bar was cold rolled to strip, lightly pickled again, and cut into pieces approximately 1/32 in. thick and 1/4 in. square. These were cleaned in acetone, dried, and stored for charging. The high-purity copper (spectrographic grade) was supplied by the American Smelting and Refining Co. with a nominal purity of 99.99 pct. These copper rods were rolled to strip, cut into squares the same size as the zirconium platelets, cleaned in acetone, dried, and stored. Equipment and Procedures The equipment used for melting and annealing the zirconium binary alloys and for the determination of solidus curves has been described in connection with previous work on the Ti-Si system' and in recent papers in this series describing the studies on eight binary zirconium systems.5-' Techniques employed for preparing and processing the alloys were also similar to those used in the above references. Ingots of 20 g were melted under a protective atmosphere of helium on water-cooled copper blocks in a nonconsumable electrode (tungsten) arc furnace. The ingots were homogenized and cold-worked prior to isothermal annealing to aid in the attainment of equilibrium. The specimens were heat-treated in Vycor bulbs sealed in vacuo or under argon, depending on the temperature of the anneal. Quenching was accomplished by breaking the Vycor bulbs under cold water. Temperature control was within ±3OC of reported temperatures. Thermal analysis was primarily relied on to determine eutectic levels, peritectic levels, and compound melting points. The induction furnace incipient melting technique was also used but did not provide the accuracy obtained by thermal analysis in this system, which involves much lower solidus temperatures than the other zirconium systems. A special technique for the determination of characteristic temperatures was employed in the case of several intermediate phases and their eutectics which displayed very small differences in melting temperatures. Specimens were sealed in Vycor bulbs and annealed at a series of very accurately controlled temperatures. Metallographic examination was then employed to reveal incipient melting. Furnaces and techniques in general were described previously.' The echant used was 20 pct HF plus 20 pct HNO3 in glycerine unless otherwise stated. Results and Discussion The chemical analyses of the majority of alloys prepared for the determination of phase relationships in this system are given in Table I and a brief summary of the equilibrium anneals employed is given in Table 11. In a preliminary program, alloys containing 1, 4, and 7 pct Cu were annealed for three different times at each of the temperatures 700°, 800°, and 900°C. No change in the relative amounts of phases present was detected after 350, 150, and 75 hr at the above temperatures, respectively. The times listed in Table II were accordingly chosen as a result of these preliminary tests. Zirconium-rich alloys containing from 0.1 to 10 pct CU were reduced by cold pressing from 58 to 8 pct, depending upon thk alloy content, homogenized for 7 hr at 900°C, and then reduced 80 to 13 pct by cold rolling, again depending upon copper content. Other alloys were studied in the cast, or cast and annealed conditions. The contracted scope of investigation for this system included the range 0 to 50 atomic pct Cu. This approximate region is shown in Fig. 1. Due to evidence of phase relationships departing considerably from those proposed by Raub and Engel" in the 50 to 100 atomic pct range, the investigation was extended to cover this composition area rather thoroughly also. Fig. 2 is a drawing of the entire diagram. The labeling of some phase fields was omitted in Fig. 2 for the sake of clarity. An expanded view of the zirconium-rich region, with the experimental points necessary for its construction, is given in Fig. 3. The generally accepted value of Vogel and Tonn8 or the allotropic transformation a + 862' ±5OC, was employed in the construction of these diagrams. A careful study revealed that the "Grade 3" crystal bar used in this investigation actually transforms over the approximate range 850" to 870°C, due to impurities. It must be expected that this two-phase field in unalloyed zirconium will cause some departures from binary ideality in the very dilute alloys. Zirconium-rich Alloys: The a + ß transformation temperature is decreased from 862" to about 822°C by increasing amounts of copper. Thus, a eutectoid reaction, fi ß a+ Zr,Cu, occurs at a composition of about 1.6 pct Cu. The eutectoid level was determined to lie between the alloy series annealed at 815" and 830°C. The characteristics of some common size distribution equations are critically discussed. A generalized form of several well-known size distribution equations is obtained from a differential equation describing statistical distributions. The equation contains three parameters and can describe the major features of size distributions in the fine and the coarse size regions. A graphical method for its implementation is provided. The application of this and other equations to sets of data are compared both for the quality of fit and from a comminution kinetics viewpoint. If a narrow size range of a brittle material is broken sufficiently to obliterate the feed sizes, but not so severely that excessive secondary breakage occurs, a plot of cumulative fraction by weight undersize (Y) vs. sieve size (X) on a log log grid (sometimes called the Gates-Gaudin-Schuhmann plot)1-3 gives a straight line of slope ~ 1 over much of its range. On closer inspection, deviations in the extreme coarse range covering perhaps 10 to 30% of the total sample may be apparent (frequently, a change in slope from ~ 1 to a value different from unity) together with over-all slight irregular departures from a smooth line. One model of breakage postulates that the same fracture pattern persists throughout all size ranges.4 The fracture pattern is characterized by the slope of the line on a log log grid. Accordingly, a distribution of sizes broken in the manner specified earlier is expected to produce a size distribution having the same slope as that of a broken narrow size range. Additionally, the slight irregularities mentioned above should even out in the summation process, giving a smooth straight line of slope ~1 on a log log plot. This idealized state of affairs does not, however, describe the distribution of a multi-event process such as that for a tumbling mill product. On the average, these curves (plotted again log log) tend to have a slope in the fine region different from and usually less than unity,5 while the coarse size region curves with increasing slope for cases of mild reduction, and with decreasing slope when moderate or severe size reduction has occurred. In addition, there are usually slight irregular deviations from a smooth curve. Most curves display two distinct regions — fine and coarse — and a few curves show one or more intermediate regions. Feed size studies6,7 show an effect which theory is required to explain. For the same material, mill loading and other operating conditions, and the same time of grinding, plotting the dimensionless ratios Y vs. X/(feed size) does not reduce the size distribution data to the same curve. Y vs. X does not correlate the coarse region, but it can provide a crude correlation of the fine region which improves as size diminishes and as grinding time increases. The size distribution in the coarse region is somewhat more dependent on the feed size than is the distribution in the fine region wherein the degree of dependence diminishes as time proceeds; the distribution of sizes in the fine region are determined largely by the nature of the material and the comminution conditions. A comprehensive model of comminution must recognize that several different patterns or modes of breakage can occur in a mill; 5,8,9 that there can be some selection in that some size ranges are broken more than others; and that, while some particles may be the product of a single fracture event, or may even remain unbroken, others result from multiple rebreak-age. Thus, breakage in a tumbling mill is more complex than the Schuhmann4 model admits in that several different types of comminution micro-events* occur rather than just one type, and these events, though different in size scale, are of the same overall pattern as that which is visualized by the model. The concept of an average comminution micro-event has, therefore, a mathematical rather than a physical connotation, at least for tumbling milling. Equations with which to describe particle size distributions have been sought for over half a century.10-13 No equation presently in general use was first derived from an analysis of the statistical mechanics of breakage; whatever theoretical basis the existing

IN other countries, research involving testing in various phases of ground movement and lessening its damaging effects, as by roof control, is going on more intensively than in this country, as evidenced by official mining papers and general articles appearing- in .Great Britain, Germany, France, and South Africa. One most important bulletin, "Some Aspects of Deep Level Mining on the Witwatersrand Gold Mines with Special Reference to Rock Bursts,"' was published by the Association of Mine Managers of the Transvaal, Johannesburg, under date of June, 1933, though not received in this country until 1.934. Since the deepest mining in the world is being done on the Rand-several mines over 7000 ft. deep and the Robinson mine 8000 ft.-the studies made are of intense interest to all mining men who have to deal with heavy ground pressure. In the discussion following the papers differences of opinions are shown on a number of problems; for example, on the ade¬quacy of sand-filling to prevent rock bursts and whether compressible or rigid artificial supports are best; also whether pressure bursts are due to the doming of strata and collapse of a lag of the dome or to induced shear cracks in the hanging wall. The problem of obtaining some means of warning of an impending rock burst led to testing with height indicators to find whether warning might be obtained by the lessening of distance between hanging wall and footwall. The indicators used are similar in idea but not in detail to the "convergence recorders" developed by the Safety in Mines Research Board of Great Britain for their roof-control studies in coal mines. Success at several Rand mines is claimed in that indicator records give some degree of warning when the lessening of height is rapid, although, on the other hand, when this happens bursts do not always occur.

The simultaneous segregation of two solutes during the directional solidification of an ingot is treated mathematically on the basis of simplifying assumptions. Expressions are derived for the difference in concentration of two solutes, and for the location and concentration gradient of a pn barrier formed in a semiconductor by the segregation of a donor and an acceptor. THE problem of normal segregation of a single solute during the freezing of an alloy has been treated mathematically by a number of investigators. Gulliver' showed that coring increases the quantity of eutectic above that to be expected at equilibrium, for a system having limited solid solubility and, on the basis of simplifying assumptions, calculated the fraction of eutectic to be expected. Scheuer2 expressed composition of solid solution in terms of a distribution coefficient and the fraction solidified and compared experiment with calculation for the systems A1-Cu, Al-Zn, Cu-Sn, Cu-Zn. Hayes and Chipman,3 in a detailed study of segregation in a low carbon, rimming steel ingot, calculated distribution coefficients for a number of solutes in iron, compared calculated and experimental segregation curves, and discussed the effects of process variables such as rate of solidification and stirring. In the present paper a mathematical analysis is made of the simultaneous segregation of two solutes during the orderly freezing of a solid solution system, with particular emphasis on the difference in solute concentrations. Although the analysis is quite general and can be applied to the segregation of minor elements in alloys, it is directed in particular at the solidification of a semiconductor containing a donor and an acceptor. Normal segregation has unique aspects in a semiconductor, because of the ways in which donors and acceptors affect the electrical properties. The difference between two solute concentrations becomes of importance, as does also the gradient of the difference where the difference goes through zero, this being the concentration gradient of excess carriers at a pn barrier. A primary object of this paper is to extend the mathematical treatment of segregation to include these newer aspects which are of particular significance for semiconductors. One property of interest is the electrical conduc- tivity, which arises from the presence of donors 'or acceptors in solid solution. The conductivity may be either n-type or p-type depending on whether donors or acceptors, respectively, are in atomic excess. For both germanium and silicon, elements of Group V of the Periodic System, such as P, As, and Sb, are donors and elements of Group 111, as B, Al, In, and Ga, are acceptors.4-6 If a donor or acceptor is present alone in solid solution, the conductivity is proportional to its concentration." If both a donor and an acceptor are present, then the conductivity is proportional to the difference in their atomic concentrations. If the donor and acceptor segregate at different rates then a pn barrier in certain circumstances may form at some point in the ingot. Accordingly, equations are derived and illustrated which express the effect of segregation on: 1—the concentration of a single solute with a discussion of the assumptions; 2—the difference between two solute concentrations and means for minimizing its variation in an ingot; and 3—the location and concentration gradient of a pn barrier. The analysis is applicable to processes in which the entire charge is melted and then progressively frozen from one end. The method in which an ingot is solidified in a crucible7 and that in which a solidifying rod is pulled from the melt8 both fall into this category. Segregation of One Solute If a cylinder of molten alloy is caused to freeze slowly from one end, a normal segregation of solutes will usually occur, producing a lengthwise concentration gradient in the ingot. Depending on whether a solute raises or lowers the melting point of the solvent, it will become concentrated in the first or last regions, respectively, to freeze. If it is assumed that freezing is such that there is no diffusion of solute in the solid, complete diffusion in the liquid, and that k, the distribution coefficient, defined as the ratio of solute concentration in the just-freezing solid to that in the liquid, is constant, then the

Mr. A. Bement, Chicago, Ill. (communication to the Secretary*) :—Mr. Campbell, in proposing his method of sampling coal-seams, has rendered an important service in insisting on the presentation of an adequate history of the sample; and it is to be hoped that his suggestion will meet with further recommendation. In my opinion it is fully as important that a complete description of the sample and the conditions surrounding its taking be given, as the results of the analysis itself; and if such should become standard practice, coal-analysis would assume greater value. As it is, the published data are very confusing, and only to an extremely small extent are they really useful. The method suggested by Mr. Campbell, however, cannot have a general application; for example, in the Eastern Interior coal-basin, particularly at the present time, the output consists largely in grades other than mine-run, which in Illinois, for the year 1905, was only about 24 per cent. of the total product; and inasmuch as Mr. Campbell's method of sampling cannot give values for any other grade than mine-run, my contention that, at best, it can have but a limited application, is apparent. To illustrate the argument, there are two coal-seams, with the characteristics of which I am particularly familiar; each seam, as it lies in the ground, contains almost exactly 10 per cent. of ash; the lump coal from one of these seams ranges from 10 to 11 per cent. of ash, but from the other seam it does not average more than 6 per cent., although, as before mentioned, the average percentage of ash in the full seam is the same for each case. A careful and proper sampling of coal-seams, to be followed by analyeis, is to be commended in connection with all investigation; in fact, it should precede any careful study. A serious error, however, may be made in attempting to use such results to set values on the product as shipped or received. The only

THE accepted basis of comparisons between mills of different diameter is the percentage critical speed. If n = actual mill speed, rpm, nc = calculated critical speed, rpm, np = calculated percentage critical speed, and D == inside diameter of the mill in feet, then n, In the following analysis capacity, T, is expressed in short tons per hour, tph, and power consumption, P, in kilowatts, kw. Accordingly power consumption per unit of capacity, P will be expressed in kilowatt hours per short ton, or kw-hr per ton. In all equations D refers to the inside diameter of the mill in feet and v to the peripheral speed of the mill in feet per minute inside the liners. ' Comparison between separate mills must be based on equivalent grinding conditions, i.e., same feed, same size distribution of feed, same size distribution of product, and same percentage of solids. In addition, comparisons between separate rod mills must be based on the same rods, same type of liners, and same percentage rod load. Comparisons between separate ball mills presuppose the same balls, similar liners, and same relative ball load. The practical np-range through which the equations apply varies, being narrower for fine grinding in ball mills and wider for coarse crushing in rod mills. The Relationship between Capacity and Speed It is the general belief that the capacity, T, of a tumbling mill is directly proportional to the speed of the mill, other things remaining constant.' Mathematically this is represented by the equation T - c¹ n tph [4] where c, is a factor related with the grinding characteristics of the ore, method of reduction, and the units chosen. It is proposed here that the general equation relating mill capacity and speed should be of the form T = c¹ nm tph [5] In other words, the capacity should be proportional to the mill speed raised to power m, the numerical value of the exponent being 1 5 m 5 1.5, depending on the circumstances. Eq. 5 can also be written in the following forms: T = c, (np)m tph, and [6] T=Ca vm tph, [71 where v = peripheral speed of the mill in feet per minute. If the observed capacity of a mill at speed n¹ is = T¹ tph, the capacity T² of the same mill at speed n² should be T² = T¹ (n²/n¹)tph [8] The Relationship between Power Consumption, Mill Diameter, and Speed The only well known theoretical deduction relating power consumption, P, and mill diameter appears to be the formula of duPont introduced by Gow, Guggenheim, Campbell, and Coghill.' According to duPont, the power required to operate a mill is a function of the mass of the balls, of the lever arm of the ball mass, and of the speed of the mill. The ball mass per unit of mill length is proportional to the square of the diameter, the lever arm is directly proportional to the diameter, and the critical mill speed or any percentage thereof is inversely proportional to the square root of the mill diameter. The permeability of Mo-0.5 pel Ti to hydrogen was investigated over a limited range of temperature and pressuire (709° to 1100°C, 1.i and 2.0 atm). The resulting permeability, p, is found to obey the The experimental data justifies the permeation mechanism as a diffusion contl-olled pnssage of Ilvdrogen atoms through the metal barrier. 1 HE permeability of metals to hydrogen has been investigated by a number of workers and their published results have been tabulated by Barrer' up to 1951. Since most of the work on the permeability has been accomplished prior to this date, the compilation is fairly complete. Mathematical discussion of the permeability process has been reported by Barrer, smithells, and more recently by zener. From these efforts several facts are observed. First, the permeability of metals to diatomic gases involves the passage through the metal of individual atoms of the permeating gas. This is evidenced by the fact that the rate of permeation is directly proportional to the square root of the gas pressure. Second, the gas permeates the lattice of the metal and not along grain boundaries. It was shown by Smithells and Ransley that the rate of permeation through single-crystal iron was the same after the iron had been recrystallized into several smaller crystals. Third, it has been observed that the rate of permeation is inversely proportional to the thickness of the metal membrane. Johnson and Larose5 verified these phenomena by measurirlg the permeation of oxygen through silver foils of various thicknesses. Similar findings were noted by Lombard6 for the system H-Ni and by Lewkonja and Baukloh7 for H-Fe. Finally, it has been determined that for a gas to permeate a metal, activated adsorption of the gas on the metal must take place. Rare gases are not adsorbed by metals, and attempts to measure permeabilities of these gases have proved futile. ~~der' found negative results on the permeability of iron to argon. Also, Baukloh and Kayser found nickel impervious to helium, neon, argon, and krypton. From what was stated above concerning the dependence of the rate on the reciprocal thickness of the metal barrier, it is seen that although adsorption is a very important process, at least in determining whether permeation will or will not ensue, it is not the rate determining process for the common metals. A case in which adsorption is of sufficient inlportance to cause abnormal behavior has been noted in the case of Inconel-hydrogen and various stainless steels.'' APPARATUS The apparatus used in this study is shown in Fig. 1. The membrane is a thin disc (A), but is an integral part of an entire membrane assembly. The entire unit is one piece, being machined from a solid ingot of metal stock. When finished, the membrane assembly is about 5 in. long. Two membrane assemblies were made; the dimensions of the membranes are given in Table I. The wall thickness is large compared to the thickness of the membrane, being on the average in the ratio of 13 to 1. There exists in this design the possibility that some gas may diffuse around the corner section of the membrane where it joins the walls of the membrane assembly, If such an effect is present, it is of a small order of magnitude, as evidenced by the agreement of the values of permeability between the two membranes under the same temperature and pressure. A thermocouple well (B) is drilled to the vicinity of the membrane. The entire membrane assembly is then encased in an Inconel jacket and mounted in a resistance furnace. The interior of the jacket is connected to an auxiliary vacuum pump and is always kept evacuated so that the membrane assembly will suffer no oxidation at the temperatures at which measurements are taken. The advantages of this configuration are: 1) there are no welds about the membrane itself, so that the chance of welding material diffusing into the membrane at elevated temperatures is remote. 2) It is possible to maintain the membrane at a constant temperature. Since the resulting permeation rate is very dependent upon temperature, it is advisable to be as free as possible from all temperature gradients. 3) It is possible to obtain reproducible results using different specimens. THIS paper deals with the flotation of the mineral fluorite (calcium fluoride) and of two associated gangue minerals, calcite and quartz. The aim of the investigation was to produce "acid-grade" fluorite, which must contain less than one per cent of silica. Several reagents are used successfully in practice for floating fluorite from its ores. Oleic acid is the most widely used collector, usually at temperatures above 60°C, with sodium silicate as a dispersant for quartz and quebracho or tannin to depress calcite. Sulphides (e.g., galena) are often removed first by xanthate flotation. Many investigators23 report results in which more than 80 pct of the fluorite is recovered in a concentrate assaying 96 pct or more of fluorite and less than I pct of silica. This investigation was undertaken with the intention of floating the gangue, which is the minor constituent of the ore, from the fluorite. Hence emphasis was first placed on the cationic compounds that float quartz. No satisfactory separations were obtained in this way, and other reagents were investigated to discover whether these were more effective than oleic acid in floating fluorite from quartz in the usual way. The first part of the paper describes experiments with several long-chain collectors available commercially. Most of this work has been by captive-bubble and cylinder flotation tests, with some batch tests in a flotation machine. The second part describes the use of sodium cetyl sulphate as a collector for fluorite and includes laboratory tests and extension of the work to batch tests in the flotation machine. A method for determining the adsorption of sodium cetyl sulphate on fluorite has been developed and is described. Exchange adsorption between lattice ions in the mineral surface and collector ions in solution. Closely related is adsorption by the collecting mechanism postulated by Taggart,17 in which there is metathesis between the collector and the mineral cation or anion. 2. Exchange adsorption between adsorbed gegen ions (p. 67, ref. 19) and collector ions in solution. 3. Adsorption of nonelectrolytes (polarnonpolar) without displacement of adsorbed ions. With cationic collectors, inorganic cations in the solution (e.g., hydrogen ion) compete with the collector ions and therefore act as depressants, while inorganic anions have the same effect with anionic collectors. An extensive investigation has been made of the deformation behavior associated with the Fe3Si super-lattice using transmission electron microscopy techniques. Above 243°K the stress-strain curve exhibits three stages. Stage I occurs at a very low stress level and is related to the generation of perfect superlat-tice dislocations. Stage II is characterized by an extremely rapid rate of work hardening and is associated with the Taylor type locking of these superlattice dislocations. Finally Stage III is related to dynamic recovery processes since the work hardening rate is very small. Below 243ºK, only Stage I is observed, but it occurs at a much higher stress level. This latter observation is related to the generation of imperfect dislocations in Stage I with the consequent production of second nearest neighbor antiphase boundaries. The reason for this is that insufficient thermal energy is available at these low temperatures to generate the complete and perfect superlattice dislocations. It has been shown that the fully ordered FeCo alloys, i.e., those possessing the B2 type structure, exhibit three distinct stages of work hardening whereas the corresponding disordered alloys show only one.&apos;" This difference in behavior between the disordered and ordered alloys has been attributed to the fact that dislocations in the former case travel only as ordinary 1/2ao(111) types whereas in the latter case the move through the lattice as coupled 1/2a0(111) dislocations separated by an antiphase boundary (APB), i.e., the so-called superlattice dislocation. Although some preliminary work has been carried out concerning plastic deformation in ordered alloys possessing the DO3 type superlattice,3 no detailed analysis similar to that described in Refs. 1 and 2 has been attempted. Specifically, it has been suggested that the superlattice dislocation in this particular type structure should consist of four ordinary 1/2ao<111> types bound together by first and second nearest-neighbor APB&apos;s. Fe3A1 and Fe3Si are the two classic alloys possessing the DO3 type lattice; however, because of the somewhat higher ordering energies associated with the FesSi alloy, which in turn assures that dislocations will travel through the lattice as perfect superlattice dislocations under at least some conditions, it was chosen for the present investigation. Because of the extreme brittleness of Fe3Si, all deformation was done in compression. Stress-strain curves were obtained using both polycrystalline samples as well as single crystals. In the latter case the crystals were oriented so that deformation could be controlled either by single or double slip. They were then wafered parallel to and at various angles to the operative slip planes. These wafers were in turn examined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) techniques in order to determine the extent of the interaction from the dislocation configuration contained therein. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE The alloys used in this investigation were arc melted under helium from electrolytic iron of greater than 99.90 wt pct purity and transistor grade silicon of 99.99 wt pct purity. A typical analysis of interstitial impurities showed 120 ppm 0, 15 ppm N, and 65 ppm C Because of the extremely low ductility of the Fe3Si alloys, it was necessary to spark cut 0.230-in. diam polycrystalline cylinders 0.400 in. long from arc-melted fingers using a thin-walled brass tube as a cutting tool. The polycrystalline alloys could not be recrystallized since very little strain was induced in preparation. However they were annealed at 1273°C for 15 min in evacuated vycor capsules to relieve any cooling stresses that may have developed during solidification and then air cooled. The resulting grain size of the alloy was 0.50 mm. According to warlimont4 1273ºC is just within the single phase field where FesSi possesses the DO3 type lattice. In addition because of this high critical ordering tem-ature, air cooling from this temperature was believed sufficient to fully order all of the Fe3Si samples used in the present investigation. For the same reason, no attempt was made to achieve any degree of disorder by quenching. In fact, rapid quenching from 1123°K caused cracking. Such cracking was first suggested by sato5 with respect to the experimental observations of Glaser and Ivanick.6 Single crystal compression specimens were spark cut from single crystal ingots grown in a Bridgman type furnace. The iron and silicon for the crystals was prealloyed by arc-melting two 130-g buttons which were cut into small pieces before remelting in the furnace. This procedure resulted in a long-range inhomogeneity of 0.5 at. pct Si between the top and bottom of the 2-in.-long single crystal ingot, which was assumed to be negligible in the present investigation. The single crystals, after orienting and spark-cutting, were about 0.37 in. by 0.37 in. in cross section and about 0.5 in. long. True stress-strain curves were obtained using an Instron Tensile Testing machine in conjunction with techniques described previously. 1,7 The strain rate was 0.05 in. per in. per min. Prior to testing, the ends of all the compression cylinders were hand polished using a special jig to insure parallelism after which the sides of the samples were electrochemically polished to eliminate stress risers and to facilitate slip line observations. THE first record of the quarrying of dimension stone in Minnesota dates back to 1820 when limestone was quarried locally for part of old Fort Snelling. Limestone quarries were operated at Stillwater, Mankato, and Winona as early as 1854. Granite was quarried first at St. Cloud in 1868, and within a few years thousands of tons were shipped to widespread points. Rough dimension stone for large buildings furnished the first important market, but beginning in 1886 paving blocks were in demand. The largest shipment was in 1888, when 1925 cars were shipped from the St. Cloud area. Quartzite was quarried first at New Ulm in 1859 and somewhat later at Pipestone and elsewhere in southwestern Minnesota: The productive dolomite quarries at Kasota were opened first in 1868 and have continued as large producers of a variety of stone to the present time. At present, the industry is controlled by relatively few operators, and for that reason detailed figures on dimension stone are not released for publication. A general idea may be obtained from the data in the Minerals Yearbook for 1948. The figures for total stone produced in Minnesota are 1,804,000 tons valued at $5,090,652. Probably the largest item in the latter figure is received from dimension stone. A better idea of the situation, in relation to the country as a whole may be gained by using the data for 1930 when more companies were operating in Minnesota, and complete figures were published. In that year Minnesota produced granite valued at $2,668,119 and ranked third among the states in value. Minnesota&apos;s production of granite was almost exclusively for dimension stone. In the same year Minnesota produced 300,000 tons of limestone (dolomite) valued at $840,860, and this likewise was mainly dimension stone. In finished limestone Minnesota ranked second among the states in 1930. Sandstone and minor amounts of quartzite are the only other dimension stones that have been produced in Minnesota, but the quarries are now inactive. The commercial stones of Minnesota have been described in two reports by Bowled and by Thiel and Dutton.2 The early history of quarrying in Minnesota and extensive notes on the various rocks are given by N. H. Winchell.3 Small limestone and dolomite quarries were numerous throughout the area of Paleozoic rocks in southeastern Minnesota. Early production was largely dimension stone. With the increased use of Portland cement, most of these ceased production, and today only those at Kasota and Winona remain in operation. In recent years many quarries have reopened and new ones started, but these are devoted to the production of crushed rock and agricultural lime. As the application of modern quarrying and finishing methods increased, small companies in the granite business have dropped out, and the remaining companies have modernized their plants, purchased old quarries, and opened up new ones, thus furnishing a wide variety of granites suitable for most of the customary uses. It is the purpose of this review to present notes on&apos; the geology and operations of each of the quarries now operating within the state. Granites and Related Igneous Rocks The term granite as used in this report includes granites, gneisses, diorites, gabbros, and other igneous rocks. The granites of greatest economic importance are found in three widely separated regions, see Fig. 1. 1-Central Minnesota in the region of the city of St. Cloud, 2-the upper Minnesota River valley region, 3-the northeastern portion of the state, commonly referred to as the Arrowhead region. The St. Cloud Region: The rocks of the St. Cloud region are mainly granites and related rock types such as monzonites and quartz diorites. The stones may be grouped into three major types, namely, pink granite, red granite and gray granite. Most of the pink granite occurs in the area to the southwest of St. Cloud. The rock is best described as stone with large pink crystals set in a finer grained black and white background. SCHLESINGER,* Denver, Colo.-Two problems are of great interest to the radium manufacturer at the present tine: The first is to perfect a process, more efficient and more economical, which is capable of treating a greater variety of ores. . Practically all the radium now manufactured in the United States is extracted from carnotite ores and these vary a great deal according to their location. The amount of sulfates contained in the ore is of particular importance, and any straight acid-leaching method, such as developed by the Bureau of Mines, becomes prohibitive when the ore contains more than 0.5 per cent. of sulfates, as the sulfates go into solution and naturally precipitate the radium as insoluble radium sulfate. Since the amount of ore obtained from any one claim is usually comparatively small, it is necessary to work a number of claims in different localities, and a process, in order to be commercially satisfactory, should handle all of these ores. In other words, it would be entirely unprofitable for radium manufacturers to employ any process which cannot treat any but sulfate-free ores. He must deal with carnotite containing appreciable amounts of sulfates, and must be able to work this in with the other ores. Carbonaceous ores from certain sections in Utah; which are known to contain as pinch as 1.0 per cent. and more of volatile matters, are prone to a, nitric acid-leaching process. The second problem relates to the treatment of concentrates. There is no doubt that a very large amount of low-grade ore, containing less than 0.75 per cent. uranium oxide, is available. Strictly speaking, manganese should not&apos; be classed as &apos;a rare metal, since there is 800 times as much manganese in the earth&apos;s crust as there is zinc or lead. But manganese&apos; as a metal is rare, just as titanium metal is rare though titanium is five times as abundant in the earth&apos;s crust as manganese.

ANNOUNCEMENT on August 6 of the historic event of dropping an atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, was more dramatic even than V-E day, since that had so long been forecast whereas the bomb production had been the best-kept secret of the war, even though at one time more than 100,000 people had been at work in connection with its production, and some two billion dollars had been spent on the project. Mining men had long been aware of an unexplained abnormal interest in uranium production, and suspected that something of the sort was on foot, while metallurgists were aware that various men of their acquaintance were engaged in some top secret research. The first announcement was soon supplemented by other official releases which told more about the research laboratories for theoretical and pilot studies, and the plants in Tennessee and Washington, but none of them made clear what the modus operandi is of these terrific bombs. Inquiry at Colum. bia University, where Dr. Dunning and his associates had succeeded in 1939 in splitting the uranium atom, and where laboratories known only as SAM have been feverishly active since the beginning of the war, was unproductive, since none of those officially connected with the project could give out anything beyond the official releases.

FOREWORD-At the SME-AIME meeting in Las Vegas this year, the SME Publications Board and the MINING ENGINEERING Committee decided that a fitting way of celebrating the United States&apos; bicentennial would be to publish an article in ME covering the great men in American mining. After some discussion as to the inclusion of financiers -men such as William Randolph Hearst, J. Pierpont Morgan, etc.-the group agreed that the feature should be restricted to the "nuts-and-bolt people," e.g., mining engineers, geologists, mineral processing engineers. Thus, from the AIME All Institute Honors roll and from the SME Awards list, the group chose these 11 historical figures: Herbert Hoover, Daniel C. Jackling, Henry Krumb, James Douglas, Rossiter W. Raymond, Hal W. Hardinge, Seeley W. Mudd, Erskine Ramsay, Howard N. Eavenson, Robert A. Richards, Arthur F. Taggart. What follows is an account of each of these great miners&apos; achievements and the problems they faced, and an assessment by some of today&apos;s mining leaders of the challenges that lie ahead.

Reasonable and timely solutions to the complicated mathematical calculations involved in the mine planning, economic evaluation and slope stability studies related to the Ruth Mine would not have been feasible without the modern digital computers. The Ruth Mine was a prosperous underground copper operation in east central Nevada from 1915 to 1948, when rising mining costs finally exceeded the value of the ore. A substantial reserve of porphyry copper remained in the ground, but until recently all economic evaluations indicated that it was at best a marginal operation and a relatively poor risk of capital. There has been a steady progress in improving all aspects of surface mining since the first steam shovel started stripping overburden; however, developments in just two rather specialized areas proved to be critical in changing the Ruth Mine from a reserve of mineralized rock to an economically attractive orebody. One involved the progress made in recent years in the science of slope stability. Applying the latest techniques in this field to mine planning resulted in reducing the stripping ratio from 6.0:l to 4. 2:l. The other major factor was the efficiency and cost performance of large capacity haulage trucks which made it feasible to go down over 1100 ft. in an open pit and recover ore with a high stripping ratio economically.

§ 1 Introduction.—This paper gives the results of our micro-graphic determinations of the position of Ae3 in a series of 14 hypo-eutectoid steels of varying carbon content, one of them very rich in phosphorus, and of SEe for one hyper-eutectoid steel. We have proceeded chiefly by noting the temperature at which the reabsorption of the pro-eutectoid element is found to be complete after a 30-min. holding, but in part also by noting the temperature at which its precipitation begins. Observations on these same steels by Messrs. Burgess, Crowe, and Rawdon, of the United States Bureau of Standards, are given in a paper1 issued simultaneously with this, while in a third paper2 one of us compares these data with those of earlier observers. These three papers are treated as one whole by numbering their sections, tables, and illustrations continuously, and by setting the folding plates of micrographs at the end of the last paper. The Composition of the Steels Experimented On is given in Table I. § 2. Lead concentrates from Kuroko (black ore) mines, which contain 4-7% Cu, 55% Pb, 3-777, Zn, and 0.5-0.9% As, are pretreated by a hydrometallurgical process before electric furnace smelting with other lead resources from Kuroko. The hydrometallurgical pretreatment involves sulfuric acid leaching in the first stage and ferric leaching in the second stage. This paper describes the short history of lead recovery from Kuroko and the performance of laboratory tests and pilot plant and commercial operations.
