THE Maintenance Committee of the Coal Division of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgical Engineers is presenting with this report the first of a series of cost comparisons which it plans to present to the Institute. The plan is to assemble maintenance cost on all equipment connected with mechanical operations at the face of coal mines, to arrange these costs by districts, to make comparisons between districts, and within districts. This particular report covers data with respect to mobile loading machines, including both "on-track" and "off-track" equipment. It is anticipated- in-fact, considerable data have already been accumulated-that next year complete maintenance costs by districts can be presented for complete loading units, including the various classes and combinations of on-track and off-track equipment. Data have also been collected with respect to some phases of maintenance methods and certain recommendations of the committee are included dealing with maintenance problems. In the assembly of these data more than 120 questionnaires were sent to operating companies through- out the United States. At the time the report was written 33 questionnaires had been returned with completed information and an additional group of companies had written that the information requested was not at present available but that they hoped to have such information available in the not far distant future. The tetnperature-conposition phase diagram of the syste,n MnS-CdS has been investigated over a range fro)n 600° to 1000° C. The small degree of solid solution on the MnS rich slde cornpared to the large CdS rich single-plzase region could be esplained by the difference in strzrctures of the cotnponents and the relative sizes of the metal ions. The change in lattice parameter as a function of cot)zposition is linear atzd jollous Vegavd's rule within experittzental limits of error. Mns and CdS have gained considerable attention in recent years because of their interesting solid state properties. In order to investigate such properties and thermodynamic quantities of mixed compositions of transition metal chalcogenides, it is necessary to establish their phase diagrams. Two earlier publications are concerned with the MnS-CdS system. Schnaase' found complete miscibility when MnS and CdS were co-precipitated in aqueous solutions at room temperature. However, there is evidence that the mixed crystals were not stable over the entire range of composition. roger's' investigation of the ternary system ZnS-CdS-MnS at 900" C indicates a solution of 48 mole pct MnS in CdS. During the course of this work which covers a temperature range from 600" to 100O° C, emphasis has been placed on the use of high-purity materials and well-defined modifications of starting products. EXPERIMENTAL Starting Materials. The stable green modification of MnS with NaCl structure was prepared by direct fusion of the elements and by chemical transport reaction. Stoichiometric amounts of manganese of 99.99+ pct purity and of sulfur of 99.999 pct purity from Gallard-Schlesinger Corp. were sealed in an evacuated quartz tube at a pressure of 10"5 mm Hg and annealed for 48 to 60 hr at 800°C. The quartz tubes used throughout this work were outgassed under high vacuum at a temperature of 90OU to 1000° C for 12 to 18 hr. For the synthesis of MnS by chemical transport3 stoichiometric ratios of elemental manganese and sulfur and small amounts of iodine were sealed under vacuum in a quartz tube, which was placed in the temperature gradient, 900/800-C, of a two zone furnace. Single crystals of MnS in form of platelets and octahedra were deposited at the cooler end of the tube. The manganese content was determined by EDTA titratin. A typical result of several analyses was 63.05 pct Mn which agreed well with the computed value, 63.14 pct. Commercially available CdS of 99.9+ pct purity, a mixture of the cubic and hexagonal forms, was converted into the hexagonal high-temperature modification by annealing CdS under vacuum in quartz tubes at 700° C for about 36 hr. As a second method, cadmium sulfide was transported in a temperature gradient, 70O° /650" C, with in vacuo sublimed iodine from the hot to the cooler zone of the tube. Large sized crystals in form of hexagonal columns and some platelets were obtained. An average result of the cadmium analysis by EDTA titration4 was 77.93 pct in good agreement with the computed value, 77.81 pct. Only the NaCl modification of MnS and the wurtzite modification of CdS were used for the solid solutions. Preparation of Solid Solutions. Finely powdered MnS and CdS samples were thoroughly mixed in molar ratios and compressed into pellets of about 6 mm diam and 2 mm in height at a pressure of approximately 13,500 atm.

THE Getchell mine, a comparatively recent gold discovery, is in the old Potosi mining district, Humboldt County, Nevada. All ore is mined from open pits using Diesel shovels and gasoline trucks. Two types of ore are mined, oxide and sulphide. Oxide ores are siliceous or shaly; sulphide ores either gougy, siliceous or shaly. In mining, the sulphide ore is segregated into hard and gougy ore, because the gouge must be dried before it can be crushed, The oxide ore is not segregated. GENERAL METALLURGY The oxide ore is the leached outcrop that overlies the sulphide ore body. All of the iron and arsenic sulphides found in the sulphide ores have been thoroughly oxi-dized, The sulphur and arsenic have been leached out while the iron is present as hematite and limonite. The oxide ore is amenable to direct cyanidation, and although no visible free gold is present it is released at a comparatively coarse grind. The sulphide ore is more refractory, since the gold is all of micron size and some of it is locked in fine sulphides. It has been established microscopically that the free gold is coated with an impervious shell, which is probably some form of iron compound. The sulphide ores contain from 1.5 to 2 per cent of arsenic, which is present as orpiment and realgar with minor amounts of arsenopyrite. The orpiment and realgar are of a later mineralization than the gold and are barren. Roasting and washing of the sulphide ore prior to cyanidation is necessary to eliminate the arsenic, to alter the gold coating from an insoluble form to a soluble form, and to release the gold associated with the fine sulphides. Washing the ground calcine in weak sulphuric acid, trona, or hot water are beneficial in the order named, but to date the water is the best from an economic standpoint. Metallurgical tests as well as plant practice indicate that a certain amount of gold cannot be recovered even by going beyond economic practices, On this basis metallurgical results are viewed in the light of an optimum tailing rather than a per-centage of extraction.

(written discussion?).-A few months ago we became interested in deter-mining the properties of. pure nickel as a metal for certain uses and arranged, in cooperation with the International Nickel Co., a series of tests on cold-rolled so-called pure nickel and both longitudinal and transverse specimens annealed at 100° intervals from 250° to 1050° C. Since our tests confirmed; in a general way, the observation put forth by Messrs. Browne and Thompson, they are given at this time. A bar of hot-rolled nickel about 9 in. (23 cm.) wide and 1/2 in. (12.7 mm.) thick made by the International Nickel Co. -of grade A stock, analyzing nickel plus cobalt 98.48 per cent., iron 0.67 per cent., manganese 0.27 per cent., carbon 0.07 per cent., silicon 0.162 per cent., sulfur 0.033 per cent., and copper 0.22 per cent., was cold-rolled down to a final thickness of 0.134 in., malting a 73.2 per cent. reduction by rolling. Test specimens, 9 by 1 in., cut parallel (marked longitudinal) and normal (marked transverse) to the direction of rolling were milled to give a test section 2 5/8 in. long by 0.5 in. wide. Three specimens each, longitudinal and transverse, were annealed at one time in a nichrome-ribbon-wound tube furnace. The temperatures were taken with a Pt-PtRh thermo-couple in conjunction with an Engelhard millivoltmeter. An annealing period of .) 2 hr. plus 25 min. preheating was used in all cases. Sclero-scopic and Brinell hardness tests and static tensile tests were made on the rolled and annealed specimens. The tensile tests are shown in graphic form in Fig. 7. The Brinell and scleroscopic values are given herewith.

The fatigue behauior of irradiated copper single crystals is compared to that of unirradiated crystals. Proton or electron irradiation did not substantially change the fatigue-lzj.e, fatigue-hardening-, or slip-line characteristics, while neutron irradiation did appear to alter these parameters. Postfatigue transrrzission electron microscopy did not reveal any marked structural differazces between irradiated and unirradiated specimens. Possible dislocatio~a mechanisnzs to explain the observed behavior are discussed. A LTHOUGH considerable work has been done to ascertain the effects of radiation on the tensile properties of metals (e.g., Refs. 1 and 2), little work of a basic nature has been reported on the effect of radiation on fatigue properties. Since it is known that fatigue properties are sensitive to conditions at the surface of the metal, it was felt that charged particle irradiation, whose penetration into metals is very small, might influence the fatigue behavior. To investigate this surface effect, irradiations with 10 mev protons and 1.5 mev electrons were conducted. The range of 10 mev protons in copper is about 0.236 mm; which is very small compared with the thickness of the specimens used (1.53 mm). The range of 1.5 mev electrons is somewhat larger, on the order of 0.665 mm.4 On the other hand, irradiation with reactor neutrons produces damage throughout the entire specimen, so neutron irradiation can be used to study the effects of bulk damage. The damage introduced by proton and neutron irradiation is expected to con!ist of large interstitial dislocation loops,5 tiny (<25A) vacancy loops," and/or various vacancy-rich regions called depleted zones.&apos; In the case of electron irradiation at about -173°C the damage is expected to consist of isolated Frenkel pairs.&apos; The effect of radiation damage on the fatigue properties of some engineering materials has been reported,g,10 but the results are not clear-cut or consistent. SPECIMEN PREPARATION Zone-refined copper was used to grow single crystals by a modified Bridgeman technique in an inert helium atmosphere. Using a seeding method, single crystals were obtained as bars about 6 in. long with a cross section of 3 by $ in. Immediately upon removal from the split-mold graphite boat in which they were grown, the very soft bars were embedded in a room-temperature setting plastic. They could then be cut into specimen lengths without introducing any long-range damage. Generally, four or five specimens plus one seed were obtained from each bar. The plastic material was dissolved away in acetone and the orientation of each sample was checked by the standard Laue X-ray

BaCKOFEN, Avery, and Turner have shown"2 that the large tensile elongation in superplastic metals is correlated with a high strain-rate sensitivity of the flow stress. At present, the reported superplastic materials are complex eutectic or eutectoid systems with a large solubility range in at least one of the terminal phases. This note describes the behavior of a solid-solution alloy (at 22°C)5,= Sn-1 wt pct Bi, which has been processed in order to produce a fine grain size.2,3,6 The chill-cast, 1/2-in.-diam ingot was homogenized for 1 week at 130°C, extruded at O°C to 0.083 in. diam, quenched within 15 sec, and stored at -196°C. Samples were warmed to room temperature 16 hr prior to mechanical testing or metallography. During tension testing at room temperature, it was found that the flow stress reached a steady-state value which depended on the imposed elongation rate and was independent of strain to an error of about ±5 pct. In Fig. 1 is plotted log a vs log e where a is the measured steady-state flow stress and i the imposed strain rate. These quantities were calculated using "instantaneous" area and length to an accuracy in the sample diameter of ±5 x 10-4 in. The log a-log 1 curve is sigmoidal. The strain-rate sensitivity, which may be given by d log old log 6,&apos; has a maximum value of about 0.48 between i = 5 x 10-4 and 5 x 10-3 per min. The value is well above frequently measured values for metals at creep temperatures (0.1 to 0.3) and comparable to the rate sensitivity for Pb-Sn solder: which has been shown to be superplastic.2,3 Note, however, that below or above the strain rate of 10-3 per min the rate sensitivity of Sn-1 pct Bi decreases and at high rates is more nearly like that of conventional metals. The grain size of this material is relatively uniform, Fig. 2, and may be specified by an average linear intercept i.&apos; Grain growth occurs at room temperature but after 16 hr, L = 5. Tensile elongation was measured on finer-grain-size specimens, which had been at room temperature 15 min prior to testing. After 15 min, the samples are fully recrystallized. Three strain rates, 5 x 10-3, 10-2, and 2.5 x 10-2 per min, were employed for which the measured elongations varied from 425 to 500 pct. These results would seem to justify the term superplastic, applied to this alloy, although the ductility is inferior to that of the Sn-Bi eutectic.3 The Sn-1 pct Bi alloy, which is a single-phase material with equiaxed, fine grains, is an excellent one on which to make an estimate of the Nabarro-Herring9 creep rate. According to the model of Avery and Backofen2 a substantial part of the deformation must be accomplished by N-H creep in the strain rate-temperature regime in which d log a/d log 1 = 0.5. The maximum N-H creep rate is given by9 L2kT where v is the atomic volume and D the self-diffusion coefficient. For this test v = 3.O x 10-23 cu cm, D = 1.4 e-23,300/RT = 2.5 x 10-l7 sq cm per sec,7 L = 5x 10+4 cm, T = 295°K, and a = 2000 lb per sq in. = 1.38 x 10&apos; dyne per sq cm. The calculated creep rate is E= 4 x 10-11 per sec which may be compared with the measured creep rate at this stress, Fig. 1, of 6.7 x 10-5 per sec. The N-H creep rate is seen to be negligible. Earlier consideration2 of this question was in error because incorrect diffusion coefficients were used. The assistance of R. R. Russell in metallography is acknowledged gratefully.

THE fact is notable though probably little known that the United States is the only nation obtaining and distributing through its Government bureaus any data pertaining to waste metals and drosses. Some foreign governments do issue reports relating to mine or smelter produc-tion of primary metals, but none gives in scope and detail the information published now by the U. S. Bureau of Mines and formerly by the U. S. Geological Survey; and this is despite the fact that the funds annually allotted for those purposes are insignificant in comparison with allotments for the preparation of data relating to other industries of like importance. The earliest data on the production of metals from secondary sources in the United States were-contained in a press bulletin issued by the U. S. Geological Survey on Jan. 4, 1909. The information published was that for the year 1907 obtained and compiled by C. E. Siebenthal, who was one of the first to visualize the growing importance of the scrap-metal industry. The National Conservation Commission had emphasized its opinion that the known domestic supply of certain kinds of the more important metals was being rapidly marketed and that while there was no immediate cause for concern it was best to conserve such resources. Not only had there been a lamentable lack of any data regarding the quantity of scrap metals available or used but also gross carelessness and indifference in the segregation, collection, and effective use of scrap material. Siebenthal realized that even approximately correct statistics of recoveries from the more important base-metal scrap and drosses were nearly as essential to both producers and consumers as the statistics of the output of primary metals. There were not then nor are there now sufficient funds for complete collection of data, nor was it considered the province of the Geological Survey to do more than determine approximately the recovery of secondary metals for use in supplementing those given for the primary metals. Discussion o f Papers. Meetings of the Institute offer opportunity for social acquaintance and exchange of ideas, for the--presentation of papers, and-for discussions. thereon ; also incidentally for viewing under especially favorable conditions mining operations and industrial establishments, and for hospitalities which demonstrate the brotherhood clue to kindred interests. Placing sociability prominent is not to be assumed as relegating other features of meetings to subordinate positions; but during about 40 years of membership in the Institute, the value of acquaintances formed (often ripening into close friendship), and the interchange of data, have frequently demonstrated that the social feature of meetings is of great and lasting value to the membership. Of a roll embracing 4,011 members, resident in all parts of our country, and scattered in various portions of the world, only a small fraction are able to attend meetings, even if the localities selected are alternately widely separated. Hence, the return which most members receive for their annual assessment of dues is limited to the publications issued, and the credit of being recognized as a. member of a great and worthy organization. The greater the value of the contents of our publication, the fuller the return which goes to members. While the Institute disavows responsibility for views or statements made ill papers which appear in its Transactions, the fact that these contributions, after passing proper censorship, are accepted by the Institute and spread before the world may properly be received by the writers as endorsements of their (the writers&apos;) ability to present a specific technical or industrial proposition worthy of being carefully read. But the mere presentation and publication of contributed papers falls short of fulfilling one important feature of our meetings. If the purpose is confined to having the writers&apos; views, discoveries, theories, or methods published, this can be obtained through the technical or trade journals and magazines. The true value of a paper presented at a meeting of the Institute may often be gauged by the discussion which it encourages, although there are contributions of decided value which do not especially invite discussion. However, most Of the papers offered contain statements apt to encourage criticism or elaboration by others whose experience or knowledge, or both, assist in combating or endorsing statements made.

TO THE BOARD OF DIRECTORS OF AMERICAN INSTITUTE OF MINING AND METALLURGICAL ENGINEERS Gentlemen:-I have the honor to present the following, report for the calendar year 1920. The activities which seem to call for special comment are: THE NEW FORM OF MAGAZINE MINING AND METALLURGY appeared every month during the calendar year and has been developed until it contains some ten departments. It has brought forth more commendatory letters than have been received at headquarters on any other subject throughout the year. Less than a dozen letters unfavorable to the change have been received, and the indications are that the magazine has met a want deeply felt, especially by members distant from headquarters. The technical papers printed by the Institute are published in abstract in the magazine and opportunity is given to members who desire them to receive full copies of any or all papers published. The Bound Volumes, as usual, contain all the papers in full and discussions thereof. FINANCES The greatly increased cost of paper and printing has put a tremendous burden on the Institute&apos;s finances, since the dues of $12 per year are only 20 per cent. greater than the members paid when the Institute was founded forty-nine years ago. This has resulted in a temporary deficit, similar to that encountered by many of our sister engineering societies. The fact that our Institute has lower dues and gives more in the way of publications to its members than any other of the national engineering societies has rendered the situation more difficult for us. MEETINGS The Annual Meeting in New York, the Field Meeting in the Lake Superior District, the meeting of the Petroleum and Gas members at St. Louis, and of the Institute of Metals Division in Columbus, Ohio, have all been described in full in the magazine.

AN incomplete statistical analysis performed wearily on the morning after Thursday, Feb. 12, indicates that the unavoidable items of conversation among steelmen were the current shortage of sleeping time and the "Normandie." No analysis is needed, however, to be certain that many thousands of valuable words were uttered, both in and out of technical sessions, concerning matters of deep interest to members of the Iron and Steel Division. The opening session consisted mostly of papers that have appeared, or will appear shortly, in Metals Technology. One, however, that was not finished in time to be printed in any form, but that aroused great interest, was by E. L. Ramsey and L. G. Graper (Wisconsin Steel Works). Its subject was the production of high-sulphur steel by treatment with sulphur dioxide derived from anhydrous sodium sulphite or bisulphite added to the ladle or to the mold. The sulphide distribution in the finished steel is such that increased machinability and longer tool life result. Both items are of obvious importance in these days of mighty production.

In the hope that a brief description of the conditions that are favorable or unfavorable to success in the practical treatment of titaniferous ores in the blast-furnace may not be without interest to the members of the Institute, the present paper is submitted. The class of ores of which I speak may be described as magnetites, with a gangue of siliceous matter, in which a portion of the silica is replaced by titanic acid. Professor Dana, in his System of Mineralogy, gives a long list of representative analyses of titanic iron ore in which the percentage of titanic acid varies from 59 down to 34. If the percentage is below the latter figure, the ore is no longer recognized as a "titanic ore;" although, according to my experience, titanic acid is present, in small quantities, in almost all ores. In the methods followed in ordinary analysis it is usually included with the "insoluble matter," unless special search is made for it. In the ores usually regarded as "titanic "the proportion of titanic acid frequently assumes quasi definite percentages, such as from 4 to 5, 8 to 9,12 to 13, and so on, in an ascending scale to those higher percentages that do not at present concern us. The proportions quoted characterize large masses of ore that are now accessible to market and are lying idle only on account of the titanic stigma. My experience with titanic acid in the furnace began in England, fourteen years ago, with my being employed as chemist by the manager of the Norwegian Titanic Iron Company, which was at that time smelting, without mixture, ilmenite from Norway in a furnace 16&apos; X 50&apos;. The process, regarded as a process, was a perfect success; but the enormous quantity of fuel required, the small quantity of iron in the ore, and the cost and uncertainty of importation militated seriously against its commercial success, and a few years saw the attempt abandoned. CARBONIFEROUS CLAYS FROM a geological standpoint, but scant attention has been paid to fire-clay beds. Only within the last few years have they been the subject of individual investigation, prior to this time having been considered only in their relation to coal seams. While the relative importance of coal and fire clay is still immeasurably in favor of coal, yet an industry as large as that of fire clay is entitled to a measure of attention. A discussion of the Carboniferous clays is practically a discussion of the clay beds in the Appalachian basin, since more than 90 per cent. of these clays mined are from this region. The clays are confined to the northern end of the basin, or the States of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Kentucky, Maryland and West Virginia, ranking in importance about in the order named. The clay deposits of the Carboniferous period have been divided into two classes; those found in the Pottsville conglomerate series of rocks, and all those that are found in the formations above, for the reason that the clay beds above the Pottsville series all resemble each other in properties, composition and appearance, and all are distinctly different from the bed found in the Pottsville formation. The bed of clay found in the latter formation is unique in that flint clay is practically restricted to it. (A variety of flint clay is occasionally found in these upper deposits but this is in such small amounts as to be negligible.) Carboniferous clays occur between stratified rocks; sandstones, limestones, etc., in the same manner as coal veins. They are often accompanied by a coal vein although where the clay is of a workable thickness the coal is generally too thin to work. The clay beds are sometimes known by the name of the coal seam at which horizon they occur. Clay beds may be from a few inches up to 20 ft. in thickness. They may consist of all soft clay all flint or both soft and flint.

In the mechanical twinning of magnesium on the {1012} planes the crystal-lographic deformation is such that, in the direction of the hexagonal axis [0001], twinning is possible only undef tension stress, while in the directions perpendicular to the hexagonal axis, twinning is possible only under applied compression. Thus in extruded magnesium and magnesium alloys where the extruded textures are best described as either [1010] or [1120] fibers,&apos; the basal planes are all nearly parallel to the extrusion axis and such material is susceptible to ( 1or2 ) twinning by compression in the direction of the extrusion axis. In order to explain the results of cyclic stressing in alternate tension and compression upon the tangent elastic modulus in such material, Dorn and Thomsen2 have postulated that, following twinning under applied compression, a retwinning or un-twinning occurs as a result of residual microtensile stresses immediately upon removal of the applied compressive force. Recently, Carapella and Shaw4 have used this supposition of untwinning in magnesium in discussing their results on indentation hardness and on cold drawing of MI sheet. In trying to confirm this hypothesis by suitable direct experiments, the authors have been unsuccessful in detecting any evidence whatsoever that untwinning follows the release of applied compression and are forced to conclude that this hypothesis is improbable or, at least, that the quantity of material involved is small. For the experiments, small cylindrical specimens 0.040-in. diam. X 0.120- to 0.140-in. long were etched from 0.0625-in. extruded rod. The ends of the specimens were accurately faced off parallel in a jeweler&apos;s lathe. The compression jig was simply an ordinary set of micrometer calipers with an anvil interposed between the spindle and the specimen. The anvil was free to move axially but restrained from rotating so that the rotation of the spindle would not introduce a twisting stress on the specimen. With this arrangement the compressive strains could be estimated to 0.0001 in. and X ray pinhole photographs could be taken with or without load as required. Fig I is the pattern of an uncompressed specimen of AZ3I alloy, showing the approximate [1010] extrusion fiber. The X ray beam is normal to the extrusion axis; in this position it is particularly sensitive in detecting twinning if one directs his attention to the diffraction ring from the basal plane. Since twinning on (1072 planes produced an 86" reorientation of the crystal lattice, the original basal reflections occur at the 3 and 9 o&apos;clock positions while the (0002) reflections from any twinned material will occur at the 6 and 12 o&apos;clock positions. Fig 2 shows the same specimen compressed 3.0 pct, photographed while still under load. This strain has been just enough to produce a detectible amount of twinning and the sensitivity is roughly indicated by the fact that no alterations were produced in the intensities or maxima of the other diffraction rings. Based upon the experimental results, an adsorption model has been formulated which emphasizes the predominant role of the hydrocarbon chain in collector adsorption.

In recent years there has been increased miniaturization of electromechanical devices to keep pace with current trends toward smaller electronic components. A major problem facing the designer, however, is the higher stresses encountered by the material as a result of shorter springs. Hence an improvement in the elastic limit, as approximated by the 0.01 pct offset yield strength, would be highly desirable. An increase of 25 pct in the yield strength, for example, will permit a 20 pct reduction in both the length and thickness of a cantilever-type spring while maintaining the same compliance. One technique of improving the yield strength that has received little commercial attention is crystal-lographic texture strengthening.1,2 Texture strengthening is expected to be most beneficial in materials of hcp structure, but considerable gain can also be expected in cubic materials. A wire with a (111) fiber texture, for example, is expected to be 20 pct stronger than randomly oriented material, and 50 pct stronger than wire with a (100) fiber texture.293 For sheet specimens with a {110}(112) texture, characteristic of many heavily rolled fcc alloys, the (111) transverse direction is expected to be the maximum yield strength direction, about 20 pct higher than that in the (112) rolling direction.&apos; In addition, the (111) direction is the direction of maximum modulus of elasticity for most cubic alloys. A large value of the elastic modulus could be desirable in designs where stiffer springs are required. To test the above idea, a 0.090 in. (-2.3 mm) thick commercial grade A (5 pct Sn) phosphor bronze sheet, a widely-used material for relay springs, was rolled from the spring-tempered condition (60.5 pct reduction) to various additional reductions up to a total reduction of 95 pct. Subsequently, additional material was obtained with a total thickness reduction of 97.3 pct Standard tensile specimens were prepared from the sheet material with the tensile axis parallel to and at 90 deg to the rolling direction. Tests were run on an Instron testing machine at a strain rate of about 0.050 min-l. Textures were determined by the use of the reflection pole-figure technique. Data were obtained using nickel-filtered CuKa radiation and with the aid of a Siemens pole figure goniometer. The X-ray pole figure studies show an incrzasing development of the texture toward the {110}(112) ideal

IN order to show the need for gas reserves, their control, and conservation, in California, it is necessary to describe briefly the local conditions under which gas is produced and marketed, to point out the lack of coordination between supply and demand, and to relate the history of efforts to prevent wastage. There are now 24 fields in California producing a surplus of gas over field fuel requirements. They are usually grouped geographically into three divisions, as follows: (I) Los Angeles Basin (Los Angeles and 0 r a n g e Counties), thirteen fields, all casing-head gas. Total daily gas available for sale 125,000, 000 ?cu.ft. (2) Coastal (Ventura and Santa Barbara Counties). Seven casine-head and one dry gas field. total-avail- able daily, 165,000,000 cu.ft. (3) San Joaquin Valley (Kern, Kings, Fresno, and San Joaquin Counties). Four casing-head fields, five dry gas fields, and two producing casing- head and dry gas from different zones. Total available daily pro- ducticon, 475,000,000 cu.ft. Total all fields, 765,000,000 cu.ft. daily.

The Bureau of Mines is operating an oil-shale mine 10 miles west of Rifle, Colo., as part of its Synthetic Liquid Fuels program. The purpose of operating this mine is twofold: First, to supply oil shale to an experimental Processing plant; and second, to develop practices and select methods for mining oil shale on a commercial scale at the lowest practicable cost. The second purpose—that of finding out how to mine oil shale most cheaply—entails considerable mining research. Since the drilling of oil shale probably will be one of the major items of the mining cost, fattors that influence drilling speeds were investigated. One phase of the drilling program was the development of a successful hard-surfaced rock-drill bit1 that can be used for drilling long holes in oil shale without changing bits. During that phase, drilling speeds were measured and drill cuttings were collected for assay and for screen sizing, when the cuttings from the individual tests were compared, a definite relationship was shown to exist between the drilling speed and the coarseness of the drill cuttings. Procedure Measurement of Drilling Speeds All drilling in the tests was done with a Model UMB-D-99W Gardner-Denver wagon drill. Round-lugged drill steel, 141 in. in diameter was used in 6, 12, and 18 ft lengths with 1/8-in. Timken H-type bits hard-faced with acetylene tube borium. The tests were made in the lower adit of the Bureau of Mines oil-shale mine; the grade of the oil shale drilled ranged from 18.6 to 42.7 gal per ton, During the experiments air pressure varied between 75 and go psi while water pressure remained fairly constant at 75 psi. All holes were drilled almost horizontally. Each drill hole was thoroughly cleaned of cuttings after being collared. The advance of the drill along the carriage was measured and recorded as the drilling speed in inches per minute. Method of Collecting Cuttings TO facilitate the collection of cuttings, each drill hole was collared in a smooth, vertical portion of the oil-shale breast (Fig 1). A galvanized-stee1 sheet was fastened to the breast below the area in which the hole was to be drilled. The cuttings washed out of the drill hole by the drilling water were guided by the steel sheet into a wooden box. The cuttings that remained in the drill hole after the drill was withdrawn were scraped out and placed in the same box as the cuttings washed out of the hole. After the cuttings from a I-min. drilling interval were collected, they were placed in flat metal pans. The fines were allowed to settle and the clear water was decanted. The cuttings then were dried in the sun.
