Richard Strong (Oliver Iron Mining Div., U. S. Steel Corp.)—Mr. Waterman states (p. 59, Trans., January 1954): "Core-sludge combining factors have been calculaied for any combination of core-sludge recovery on the basis of several logical assumptions: 1—The sludge sample loses reliability geometrically as sludge recovery drops. 2—The sludge sample should not be used if the percentage of sludge return is less than the percentage of core recovered. 3—A core sample should receive a weighting at least equal to the percentage of core recovery." Assumptions 1 and 2 seem justified at Chuquicamata and most geologists would agree to the validity of assumption 3. However, contrary to the statement quoted above, the core sample does not in general receive a weighting at least equal to the percentage of core recovery when the Chuquicamata methgd is used. Furthermore, the basic Chuquicamata method is identical to the Longyear or relative volume core-sludge assay combining method. Finally, the Chuquicamata method does not, in its present form, reflect true geometric loss in sludge sample reliability according to the relationship L = AR (N-1) The basic equations representing the two steps of the Chuquicamata method can be combined algebraically as follows (using the symbology of the original article except as noted): Vol A + B Assay 2 = ASA = Assay 1 Vol A VolB Core Assay [I] Vol A CA.F + ASA (100 —F) Combined grade =[21 100 Pct where F and (100 — F) are the core and adjusted sludge assay factors from Fig. 3. The true core factor includes not only the factor F from Fig. 3 but also the quantity VolB ------------- (100 — F), which is implicit in the value of Vol A the adjusted sludge assay. This quantity is real and positive for all values of F and core recovery less than 100. Therefore the true core factor is always less than F except when F is equal to 100. If sludge recovery is 100 pct, Eq. 3 can be further simplified as follows: Let F = percentage of core recovered. Let Vol A = Vdh (100 Pct — Pct CR) where Vdh is the total volume of the sampled interval and let Vol B = (Vdh — Vc.) Pct CR where V, is the core volume in the sampled interval at 100 pct core recovery. Then combined grade = Vo V. CA Pct CR- + Assay 1, 100 Pct — Pct CR Vdh Vdh [4] 100 Pct Eq. 4 shows that when sludge recovery is 100 pct the laboratory sludge assay receives significant weight in the Chuquicamata method, even at 100 pct core recovery. The maximum weight assigned to the laboratory sludge assay depends on drillhole size, as follows: Eq. 4, with suitable changes in symbology, is identical to Royce's formula 8,' which is a statement of the Longyear or relative volume method of combining core and sludge assays. If Mr. Waterman's assumption 3 is of paramount concern to the geologist, the Royce method (for core recoveries of 60 pct and above) or a method employing the percentage of core recovered as a core weighting factor are the only recognized methods known to the writer which achieve the desired result. A modification of the latter method embodying Mr. Waterman's assumptions 1 and 2 would result from applying the factors from Fig. 3 directly to the laboratory core and sludge assays.

Industry needs a generally applicable means of defining average grain sire and grain size distribution. Students of sediments have explored this field, employing methods that might also prove useful in engineering problems. Before attempting to solve specific problems it is well to review the derivation of commonly used grade scales and the reasons for their selection. This aspect of the problem seems largely to have been lost, and a review of basic factors may suggest causes for failures in using size analysis data.

There is not a coal preparation engineer alive who would equip his newest and most modern preparation plant with all new and untried pieces of equipment. He may install a few such pieces in which he has great confidence, but he will also spend much time assuring himself that everything else in the plant has been subjected to the test of time. He may arrange these units in a unique manner, but in general, they must have proven themselves elsewhere before he will approve them for his plant. A modern coal preparation plant contains only a few items of processing equipment, the remaining items being devices for materials handling. Consequently, pure automation is almost impossible. Although the main aim of automation is conservation of manpower, it generally results in uniformity of product, lower maintenance costs, and the many intangibles that make a better plant.

(communication to the Secretary *).-It has long been known that sulphur and oxygen react upon crude oils, removing hydrogen and thereby creating unsaturated hydrocarbons which unite with each other, producing heavier forms. Dr. Rogers now finds that the percentage of sulphur in the oils of several fields in California is roughly proportional to the specific gravity of the oil. This additional proof is most welcome. It is rather surprising, , in that the impression had prevailed that practically all the reacting sulphur escaped from the oil as hydrogen sulphide, and did not remain in combination with the oil. It would be interesting to know what part of the sulphur-plotted by Dr. Rogers is in solution as free sulphur and hydrogen sulphide, and what part is, in more complex compounds, such as thiophanes, etc.

Of the potential applications of nuclear explosives to mining, excavation is perhaps the most obvious and the best understood, and probably the most practical for use in the near future. Large quantities of rock and earth can be moved by proper emplacement of nuclear explosives, but economic and practical relationship must be determined between the known capabilities of nuclear explosives and the required excavating to remove overburden. On an energy yield basis, even the cheapest of the present commercial explosives cost more than the most expensive nuclear explosive. Comparing the energy yield of a megaton thermonuclear device with the yield of TNT shows that one energy yield per dollar is 400 times greater for the thermonuclear device. However, small-yield nuclear devices (a few 10's of kilotons yield) are less efficient blasting materials than chemical explosives, with the result that the heat of explosion is utilized less effectively. While only 1 lb of conventional explosive is required to excavate 1 cu yd of rock, or about 2 million cu yd per kiloton, nuclear devices excavate from 100,000 to 300,000 cu yd per kiloton. This changes the economic situation, and it is thus apparent that nuclear explosives are cheaper only for the large explosions.

The absolute viscosity coefficients and activation energies for viscous flow of bismuth, lead, and zinc are reported. The viscosities were measured in an oscillating cup viscosimeter from nearly 1000°C to within 1 deg of the melting point of zinc; 2 deg of the melting point of lead; and in the supercooled condition of bismuth, 9 deg below the melting point. Two methods of relating the change in the viscosity coeflicient with temperature were compared. From the plot of the logarithm of viscosity (77) as a function of reciprocal absolute temperature (1/T), the equations of the lines which fit the data are: AS a part of the Reactor Fuels and Materials Research program at Mound Laboratory, precise measurements of the physical properties of liquid metals are of interest because the desirability for a low vapor pressure liquid coolant in high-temperature nuclear power plants has focused attention on the properties of the liquid metals.' Also, a clearer understanding of the liquid metal state can be achieved when better measurements are available. For these reasons, the viscosity values of certain liquid metals have been determined. The viscosities of the liquid metals, bismuth, lead, and zinc are measured in an oscillating cup viscosi-meter. In this apparatus the liquid is sealed in a right-circular cylindrical cup which is attached to a torsion fiber so that the system forms a torsion pendulum. The damping effect of the molten metal upon the normal oscillations of the torsion pendulum is a function of the viscosity of the liquid. This method is advantageous because of the small amount of sample required (8 to 10 cc), the ease of remote operation of the apparatus in a vacuum system, and the containment of the liquid metal in a hermetically sealed, nonreactive, tantalum crucible. With the liquid metal sealed in the crucible, loss of liquid by vaporization and chemical reactions with atmospheric gases are prevented. Additionally, an absolute viscosity determination is obtained which avoids the sources of possible error in a relative measurement. The difficulties in a relative method include the repetitious cup calibrations, and the uncertainty inherent in the practice of calibration of the apparatus at room temperature and extrapolation to the high temperatures necessary for the investigation of most liquid metals. The oscillating cup viscosimeter was first described by Meyer in 1891.2 The first complete mathematical treatment offering an absolute measurement of viscosity with this type of apparatus was proposed by Andrade and chiong3 in 1936 for an oscillating sphere filled with a liquid. This solution was modified to include a right circular cylinder by Hopkins and Toye4 in 1950, and R. Roscoe5 in 1958. Roscoe's treatment for the calculation of the viscosity of a liquid at a particular temperature from the logarithmic decrement and period of oscillation of the torsion pendulum was used in this investigation. A detailed description of the method of calculating the viscosity from these measurements has been reported earlier.' This calculation has been programmed for the IBM 704 and IBM 1620 computers for expedition of the otherwise laborious calculations. IT is not often that bore hole surveys can be checked by actual civil engineering methods. A recent Arizona survey was checked by normal surveying methods and the comparison of the results should be of value to both oil and mining men. During the summer of 1948 the Phelps-Dodge Corporation, at its Copper Queen property near Bisbee, Ariz., drilled a 1245 ft, 8 in. diam, churn drill- hole in a mineralized area and cased part of it, intending to use it to transfer mill tailings for stope fill. The hole, as frequently occurs, was not straight, and, in endeavoring to locate the bottom in- the underground workings, they found no evidence of the hole at the underground coordinates directly below the surface location. The noise of the drilling tools was reasonably clear, but the direction of sound was uncertain. Preliminary tests with available equipment were not successful in locating the bottom of the hole. Be- cause of the mineralized character of the area and the fact there was some casing in the hole, any magnetic method of well surveying would give results ' of doubtful value.

AS is well-known, the length per unit volume, Lv, of any lineal feature (such as grain edges in a polycrys-talline specimen) can be estimated from a count of the number of point intersections with a random plane of polish. Specifically:' Lv = 2NA in which NA is the expected number of intersections per unit area of the plane. As with all other measurements in quantitative metallography, the estimation of Lv is subject to a sampling error, the magnitude of which will depend on the number of observations. The analysis is usually performed by counting the number of intersections falling within a closed test figure of known area applied to a succession of different areas on the plane of polish. The test figure can be drawn directly on the screen of a projection microscope or else superimposed on the image of the structure by means of a reticule in a focusing eyepiece of an ordinary microscope. The use of micrographs is very inefficient unless, as in the present study, these are also needed for some other purpose. Consider an analysis in which n applications are made of a test figure within which the expected number of intersections is N. The expected total number of intersections counted is then given by NT = nN If (N) is the standard deviation in N for one application of the figure and if the latter is applied to non-overlapping regions so that the N's are independent in the statistical sense, then the standard deviation in Nt is given by: a(NT) = a(N)vn Eliminating n from Eqs. [2] and [3] we obtain: Thus, k will be a constant for a given specimen and test figure. From Eqs. [ I] and [4] we find As is to be expected, therefore, the fractional error in the estimation of Lv is inversely proportional to the square root of the total number of intersections counted. It is very desirable to have at least a rough estimate of k before starting an analysis, since it will then be possible to decide in advance by use of Eq. [5J how many counts should be made in order to achieve the desired accuracy in Lv. Without such information the investigator, unless lucky, will either do needless (and tedious) work or else obtain a result with too large an error. It is very easy to calculate k for the limiting case of N — 0, i.e., when the test figure is vanishingly small. In this case there is a negligible probability of two or more intersections falling within the figure. There are therefore only two possible outcomes: a count of one with a probability of, say, p and a zero count with a probability of (I-p). Thus and Therefore: We might expect k to depend on N and therefore on the size of the test figure. Such a dependence was observed2 in the analogous case involving the estimation of grain-boundary area per unit volume by a count of the number of intersections of a test circle with traces of the boundaries on the plane of polish. In this case the theoretical value of k at the limit N — 0 was 1.41. It was also predicted that k would display an initial sharp decrease with increasing N. Experimentally, k was observed to decrease to a value of 0.62 at N - 6 and thereafter remain approximately constant. Furthermore, the value of k for N > 6 was found to be insensitive to the form of the structure provided no pronounced anisotropy or grain-size variation was present. The effects of heat transfer on the corrosion behavior of type 304 stainless steel in boiling water have been studied. Heat transfer conditions increase the tendencies of the stainless steel toward stress-corrosion mucking when the water is contaminated with Cl-. Surface preparation is the most important variable in determining the severity of the stress-corrosion problem in water with a given Cl- content. Heat treatment, chemical cleaning, and degree of wet film boiling also affect the corrosion of stainless steels used as heat transfer surfaces in boiling water. An up-paratus for corrosion testing under controlled heat transfer conditions is described. THE principal objective of this investigation was to study the corrosion behavior of AISI Type 304 stainless steel in boiling high-purity water under conditions of heat transfer. The principal variables in the study were: a) boiling conditions: limited boil, agitated boil; b) metallurgical structure: annealed or sensitized; c) surface condition: rolled, pickled, or ground. The results of the study should elucidate the role of heat transfer in the corrosion of stainless steel in boiling high-purity water and provide a base line from which to assess the severity of this type of corrosion. Although there has been an investigation of the effect of heat transfer on the corrosion behavior of stainless steels in alkaline waters,' work on the corrosion of stainless steels under heat transfer has been largely confined to various acid solutions.'-4 Furthermore, the study of the corrosion of stainless steels in high-purity water has been generally restricted to auto-clave and instream testing in superheated (e.g., 300°C) water and steam.5'6 Cooling water problems led to this study of the corrosion behavior of type 304 stainless steel in high-purity water at its atmospheric boiling point. In addition to the effects of heat transfer, this study also considered the influences of the type of boiling,7 metallurgical structure, and surface condition on the corrosion behavior of stainless steel in high-purity water. Two boiling conditions were investigated in this study: a) limiting boiling, i.e., when the heat-transfer surface had just reached the boiling point and boiling nucleated randomly over the specimen surface and b) agitated boiling, i.e., when a mild degree of superheat had been achieved on the specimen surface and boiling occurred generally over the specimen surface. Both boiling conditions are broadly classified as wet-film boiling. Originally, this program included the study of a third type of boiling, dry-film conditions. At dry-film boiling the temperature of the heat transfer surface is high enough so that it is covered with a continuous film of steam. Experimental difficulties made it impossible to study this kind of boiling with the available apparatus. Since surface condition affects heat transfer rates, three typical surfaces were chosen for study: a) as-rolled, the 2B finish received from the supplier, b) as-pickled, 30 min in 8 pct HNO3-1 pct HF, and c) as-ground on 120 grit paper. In order to evaluate the effect of improper heat treatment or welding on hot wall corrosion, both annealed and sensitized mi-crostructure were included in this study. EXPERIMENTAL Test Apparatus. The particular problems of interest in this investigation required a knowledge of the thermal gradient through the test specimen. From this gradient, the heat flux to the surface and the surface temperature could be determined. In order to satisfy this need, an apparatus similar to the boiling-disk apparatus of Fisher and whitney2 was designed. IT is not very necessary for those who work ores to return the litharge to lead, because they use litharge in place of lead ore and they use it the more willingly when it still contains some trace of silver. For the cupeling hearth can never be so well made or so cleanly operated that some little bit of silver does not remain in it, and some particle of it is also necessary by its very nature. But for one who has to use very much lead at one time, like someone who smelts sweepings or cements, or for someone who wishes to bring his operations to a conclusion and withdraw his investment, it is possible to have the lead again. In order to do this, the litharge is taken and ground. Cupeling hearths are washed in addition to being ground. Edward Thomas (U.S. Bureau of Mines, Washington, D. C.)—This excellent article on an ingenious and successful installation of wooden rock bolts loses much of its effectiveness through an attempt by the authors to establish the general adaptability of this type of support. Possibly because they have only local experience as a guide, they imply erroneously in the first paragraph that the Bureau of Mines has been opposed to wooden bolting, although later in the article reference is made to a Bureau publication on the subject. In 1947 the Bureau of Mines decided to sponsor experiments in roof bolting in coal mines because the experience of the St. Joseph Lead Co. had indicated that this type of roof support appeared to be a roof-fall accident-prevention measure that might be adopted and also effect economies in operating cost. Justification for this belief has been borne out, particularly in coal mining. This program has been carried out under the following general program: 1—The Roof Control Section of the Bureau of Mines has advocated and initiated underground experiments under controlled conditions with many different ideas related to rock bolting since 1947. In no instance has cooperation in developing an idea been refused, no matter how ridiculous it may have seemed at first glance, if it has been requested by a mining company. 2—The Bureau of Mines has no police powers over the selection of roof-support devices and seeks none. 3—At the request of an operator, the Bureau of Mines will make comparative tests on various types of bolts underground and will submit resultant data for the operator's consideration. 4—Wherever possible, the Bureau publicizes successful installations, so that others may benefit from this experience; however, it is careful not to discriminate between manufacturers of bolts or bolt-installation equipment. Unsuccessful experiments probably should also be publicized, but from a practical standpoint it is usually not feasible. In other words, the role of the Roof Control Section of the Bureau is in line with the original purpose for which the Bureau was first organized: to serve industry through gathering, analyzing, and disseminating factual data. The distribution of manganese and oxygen between molten iron and FeO-MnO-SiO2 slags not saturated with SiO2 has been determined and used to calculate activities of MnO and SiO2 in MnO-SiO2 slags. These were found to be intermediate between the corresponding activities in FeO-SiO2 and CaO-SiO2 slags. THE equilibrium constant for the reaction between molten iron containing manganese and slags containing FeO and MnO, namely: FeO(slag) + Mn = MnO (slag) + Fe(1iquid) is most conveniently represented by: (MnO) Kmn== (FeOHMn] [Fe] is omitted, since for dilute solutions of manganese in iron, afe is approximately constant. When activities are used for (MnO), (FeO) and [Mn], Kmn is a true equilibrium constant and will apply to all types of slags, but when weight percentages are used, the values obtained for Kmn for different slags vary considerably. The equilibrium between iron containing manganese and relatively pure FeO-MnO slags has been investigated by several workers;1-4 the most recent investigation reported is that of Chipman, Gero, and Winkler.4 Their results, corresponding to slags containing up to 4 pct SiO2, were represented by the equation: 6440 log KMn = +2.95 In this case both slag and metal may be assumed to be ideal solutions, therefore the values of Kmn so derived represent the true constant for the manganese reaction. As the molecular weights of MnO and FeO are almost equal, weight concentration of these oxides may also be used in the above expression. Acidic oxides such as SiO2 and P2O5 affect the activities of FeO and MnO differently, so that when total concentrations by weight of FeO and MnO are used in the above expression for Kmn the values obtained are no longer constant. These will be denoted by K'mn. Körber and Oelsen5 investigated the manganese reaction using silica-saturated iron-manganese-silicate slags and found: 7940 logK'mn =3.172 This corresponds to Kmn values much higher than those obtained for pure oxide slags. The results of Körber and Oelsen, and Chipman, Gero, and Winkler are summarized in Table I. In the present investigation it was decided to study the manganese reaction using iron-manganese-silicate slags not saturated with silica, and which fell mainly between the orthosilicate join 2FeO . SiO2 - 2MnO.SiO2 and the FeO-MnO side of the ternary system FeO-MnO-SiO2. It has been shown" that the phases present in solidified slags of this part of the diagram are (FeO, MnO) and (2Fe0.Si02, 2Mn0-SiO,) solid solutions. Such an investigation would be of interest in deoxidation and also gives information on activities in liquid slags. This equilibrium has not as yet been investigated successfully. Hilty and Crafts7 attempted to examine this reaction in a rotating crucible furnace, but were unable to obtain suitable slag samples. In the present investigation one series of experiments was carried out in a rotating crucible furnace, because the success of Taylor and Chipman8 with such a furnace in their study of oxygen distribution between molten iron and (CaO, MgO) — FeO-Si0, slags suggested that it would minimize contamination of the slag by the crucible material. A second series was carried out using a wire-wound resistance furnace. Rotating Crucible Furnace Experiments In all cases the metallic charge consisted of 800 to 1000 g Armco iron containing 0.02 pct C, 0.03 pct Mn, and traces of Si. The modulus of elasticity and yield strength of commercially pure, annealed titanium sheet was investigated at room temperature as a function of strain rate and direction of loading. The value of E varied with direction of measuremeni in the sheet but was unaffected by strain rate in the range 0.04 x 10-to 10-2min-1. The yield strength increased with increase it2 strain rate and varied with specimen orientation. VALUES of the modulus of elasticity, E, in tension for commercially pure titanium have been reported at from 14 to 20Xl06 psi.' Reasons suggested for this variation have been a) composition, b) strain rate, c) texturing, and d) creep. For example, alloys of titanium with aluminum, manganese, and nitrogen have yielded modulus values of from 12.5 to 16.8 x lo6 psi at room temperature.' It was shown by Klier that the modulus in titanium plate was sensi-tive to strain rate. while Dotson and kattus meas- ured variations in E as the strain rate was increased from 3X to 60 min-l. For RC-7OA, 0.040-in. titanium sheet at room temperature Dotson and Kattus found that the average values of E, for specimens in the rolling direction, increased from 14.7 to 16.0 X lo6 psi as the strain rate increased. Simultaneously, the 0.2 pct yield strength increased from 74,700 to 95,700 psi for the same specimens. Differences in yield strength and E have been reported as a function of directionality in titanium sheet.= Dotson and Kattus report such an effect, and Feola6 found in annealed titanium sheet marked anisotropy in tensile strength, yield strength, reduction in area and elongation at room temperature, with

Probably no other prosperous mining district is so little known as the Black Hills. The name leads one to assume that the district is a rolling country, consisting of more or less insignificant hills. Nothing could be more untrue, as the Black Hills is an elevated region rising to heights of 7000 and 8000 feet above sea-level, and broken by deep gorges and ravines. It is, in fact, a mountainous country in all that that term implies ; but the cañons and gorges are of such a character that the country is easily penetrated by railroad-lines, and good wdgon-roads exist to-day, affording access to every portion of it. Aside from the stampede to the Black Hills country in 1876, when gold-placers were discovered, and 15,000 or 20,000 people became infected with the mining fever, the region has never had a mining " boom." Quartz-mining commenced in 1877 or 1878, and has been successfully prosecuted ever since; the output of gold steadily growing, until at present the yield is about $7,000,000 annually. This great production is about equally divided between two entirely different classes of deposits. The first class, comprising the so-called quartz or free-milling ores (of which the Homestake mine is the principal producer), are veins of generally steep dip, in the older metamorphosed rocks, and similar to the veins worked in other mining districts. The second class of mines is located in what is known as the " siliceous gold-belt." The Siliceous Gold-Belt. This belt, more particularly to be described in this paper, lies in the immediate vicinity of Deadwood and Lead City, and covers an area 6 or 7 miles in length by 3 or 4 miles in width. Vermiculite is a nonmetallic mineral of the mica family, probably related to biotite mica. Its occurrence has been noted at numerous places in the United States and in some foreign countries, but it can be said that vermiculite is of only moderately wide distribution. A laboratory and field survey of over 60 deposits in the United States by F. 1;. Schundler & Co., of Joliet, Ill., indicates that the purest deposit represented in this survey is on the property of the Zonolite Company at Libby, Montana The Zonolite Company is commercially active and the vermiculite it produces is sold as Zonolite. Hereafter, in this report, the word "Zonolite " will be used to designate the vermiculite produced by the Zonolite Company. Values given herein to Zonolite are peculiar to the vermiculite produced from the Zonolite Company's deposits. References to " vermicullite," are to he interpreted as covering the broad field covered by the Schundler survey. Composition and Characteristics of Vermiculite Vermiculite is an aluminum-nmgnesium silicate. The following typical analysis is published by the United States Bureau of Standards: silica, 41 per cent; iron oxide, 7; aluminum oxide, 18; magnesium oxide, 21; calcium oxide, 1; alkalis (sodium and potassium), 1; moisture, 11. Vermiculite breaks down into platelike formation in crushing and grinding operations. Its cleavage is basal. Crude, screened, dry Zonolit,e weighs between 80 and 90 Ib. per cubic foot; its specific gravity is 2.8 and its specific heat is approximately 2. The fusion point of Zonolit'e is 2462" F. Crude vermiculite contains between 7 and 9 per cent of chemically combined moisture. The instantaneous introduction of crude Zonolite into an expansion furnace at a temperature of between 1800" and 2000" F. transforms the combined moisture into steam, which in an effort to liberate itself forces all explosive expansion of the platelike crude material

OIL-WELL depletion curves, to be of value, should show when a well or lease may no longer be operated at a profit. The difference, at any time, between the total expenditures and the total income of a lease or well may be called the lease status. Plotting this lease status against time will give a curve subject to more accurate and different interpretations than the barrels-time curves. According to the hypothetical barrels-time curves shown in Fig. 1, well A, at the end of 16 mo., is producing twice as much oil as well B and will continue to produce for another year whereas well B will cease producing in about 6 months. The Editor, with the full realization of his own forgetfulness of political duties until it is brought to his attention perhaps by some unfavorable election already. consummated, wishes to remind the thinking men who compose the body of the membership of this Institute that never before in the history of the country has it been so important that we should be represented at Washington, and in our State Legislatures, by men of vision, high character, courage, broad experience in the more important affairs of life, and undoubted loyalty. Let us all endeavor to secure the nomination and election of this type of man, and let us, each in his own district (which collectively will represent practically every important locality in the Union) carefully scrutinize all candidates for election and work for the-best one who seems to have any chance of being. successful. Let its place ourselves in communication with political leaders, newspaper men of prominence, and public men generally, strengthening our own appreciation of the importance of the election at this time and cooperating for the purpose of obtaining candidates of the highest character. Upon the men of intellect depends chiefly the burden of wise selections at this time. Congressional elections will occur this Fall in the following states:
