In September last I had my attention called by Mr. R. G. Leckie to a deposit of nickel in the township of Orford, province of Quebec. In many ways it has proved to be a subject of great interest. As this ore is, as far as I can learn, entirely new in mineralogy and metallurgy, it has seemed to me that it would be a matter of interest to the Institute to have laid before it, in a short paper, the peculiarities I have met with in studying it. This deposit of nickel was first described by Dr. T. Sterry Hunt, our President, in the Geology of Canada, 1863, p. 738, in the follow ing terms: " The general diffusion of nickel throughout the magnesian rocks of the Quebec group has been already noticed. THE year 1937 started off most hopefully for the metal industry but the prices for nonferrous metals declined after reaching a peak in the first quarter. E. & M. J. average prices for March were: -electrolytic copper f.o.b. refinery for domestic delivery 15.775c., lead 7.19c., and zinc 7.38c. There was the usual talk of shortages and the accompanying peak in the market prices of securities of producing companies. In retrospect it now appears that this was the peak of general security prices as well and of most commodity prices. On Dec. 1 copper was back to 11c., lead to 5c., and zinc to 5.5c. At the same time metal security prices had fallen to less than 40 per cent of their March highs. This has not been a purely domestic phenomenon. Metal prices have followed a similar course in London, in spite of the fact that in all three metals a tariff wall separates the domestic market from the foreign. There is nothing in the record to suggest that planning has so far had any stabilizing effect on prices. It is doubtful whether anybody will he found to claim credit for the planning. Strong evidence supports the conclusion that domestic demand for these and the other metals has been dammed back by the uncertainties confronting those who are considering long term construction commitments. This is particularly true with the public utilities, who are the largest consumers of copper and lead. If the plans were designed to maintain employment rather than to maintain political control of the Government, it would appear that they should be discarded. The course of the steel industry has been followed so closely in the press that no comment is necessary to indicate its similarity.

With the opening of the Tilden mine near Ishpeming, MI, a new era in iron ore beneficiation was begun. A description of a U. S. Bureau of Mines investigation is summarized to illustrate the selective flocculation-deslime-flotation process developed by the Bureau and used at the Tilden concentrator, which is also briefly described. The operating parameters for the selective flocculation-cationic flotation of an oxidized taconite from the Mesabi range are discussed. A water reclamation system using lime and a cationic flocculant was applied to reclaim the effluents from a 900-pound-per-hour flotation pilot plant. About 80 percent of water requirements were recovered, and the calcium content of the reclaimed water was found to be more important than clarity in influencing the selective flocculation and flotation processes. Although reclaimed waters with about 10 ppm calcium registered turbidities of approximately 5,000 ppm SiO2 equivalents, the concentrates produced using these waters contained 64 percent Fe and 55.0 percent SiO2 and had accompanying iron recoveries of 75 percent. Lower grade concentrates resulted from using reclaimed water with higher calcium contents and lower turbidities.

IN May, 1878, I had the honor of presenting to the Institute, at the Chattanooga meeting, some observations upon the heat of the Comstock Lode, and since then the subject has attracted some attention and criticism, in the course of which, I have observed errors of apprehension which I beg leave to correct now. Mr. John Arthur Phillips discussed it before the Geological Society, his paper being printed in the Quarterly Journal for August, 1879.* His criticism is based upon that part of my paper in which I quote a number of analyses of the mine waters, to illustrate the fact that the heat does not come from the oxidation of pyrite. MANY attempts have been made to develop a relation between the tensile properties and the deep-stamping qualities of metals com-monly used in deep drawing. These operations are generally performed cold and the metal is always stressed beyond the elastic limit. However, the problem cannot be readily solved without a proper investigation of (1) the relation between actual stress and actual strain in the plastic range and (2) the stresses that are set up in the metal during the process of deep stamping. Much work has been done in recent years to add to our knowledge on plastic deformation of metals and the shortcomings of the ordinary tensile test, particularly in the plastic range, have been sufficiently recognized. It has been widely acknowledged that the local contraction, which appears in a tensile test after the maximum load is reached, is not a general characteristic of the material but is peculiar to this form of testing. The plastic deformation of materials is explained by the slip of their crystals along certain planes and this rearrangement should be similar whether observed in a tensile, compression or torsion test, and if the results of any of these forms of testing show deviations, it must be due to other influences, as for example the local contraction in a tensile test. For this reason the tensile-test curve as obtained from the measurements taken on a tensile-test machine or registered by an autographic device has been supplemented by the so-called "actual stress-strain curve," which is constructed from the observed tensile-test data by eliminating the effect of local contraction and is in complete alignment with the stress-strain values obtained in a compression or torsion test. The effect of the transition elements in binary solid-solution additions upon the recrystallization temperature of iron has been investigated. All these elements immediately raised the temperature, the majority having their greatest effect in less than 0.10 at. pct. A correlation is noted between the rate of change of recrystallization temperature with atomic percent solute and the electron configuration of the solute element. THE work of Abrahamson and rant' on binary chromium-base alloys indicated that a correspondence existed between the effect of each solute element on the brittle-to-ductile transition temperature of chromium and the ground-state electron configuration of the element added. This was felt to be a bonding phenomenon and would be expected to be observed in measurements of other properties involving the breaking or exchange of atomic bonds. From this work it was postulated that a like correspondence should be found for other properties of binary alloys, such as recrystallization. This study is an effort to check this postulation using binary solid-solution iron-base alloys. Previously, the majority of recrystallization studies were carried out on steels. However, Tammann2 investigated the recrystallization of iron as effected by Co, Ni, Si, Mn, Mo, and Cr and stated that elements with the same crystal structure at room temperature as iron appeared to be more effective in raising the recrystallization temperature. Austin, Luini, and Lindsay3 studied the effects of Ni, Cr, Mn, Co, Si, and Mo on cold rolling and annealing, but noted no trend. Abrahamson and rant,' in their work on the effect of both substitutional and interstitial elements upon the brittle-to-ductile transition of chromium, have shown that the outer electron configuration in the ground state of the solute element appears to be the prime determinant of the transition temperature. PROCEDURE All alloys were made using 99.95 + pct Fe with 0.02 wt pct 0, 0.004 pct C, and 0.001 pct N. All alloying elements were 99.9 + percent pure. Metal-lographically the alloys, out to at least 0.1 at. pct, appeared to be in solid solution. Though several published phase diagrams tend to dispute this.4 All alloys were arc melted six times and cast into square 400-g ingots under an argon atmosphere.

The review by Professor J. C. Jaeger (Chapter 1) briefly summarizes and discusses a select group of papers by various workers dealing primarily with aspects of fracture in brittle rock materials. Professor Jaeger's treatment is primarily concerned with the correlation of phenomenological and theoretical failure criteria with empirical results from short duration tests at ambient temperatures and generally at low lithostatic and interstitial fluid pressures. As engineering rock mechanics becomes more concerned with new techniques of mineral exploration and production at increasingly greater depths in the crust, it is well to be aware of the effect of the environment -that of the superposed stress field upon the lithostatic and interstitial fluid pressure, the temperature and the duration of the loading upon the failure of rocks either by fracture or flow. All results to be discussed here are from laboratory tests on small homogeneous samples, thus caution should be used in the direct extrapolation of these results to large inhomogeneous rock masses having quite different boundary conditions in the earth. The purpose of this supplement is to briefly point out the major effects of these parameters as examined singly, with all others held constant, and to cite some recent results which apply to the main theme on the brittle failure of rocks. The total stress field imposed upon a small volume of porous and permeable rock in the earth's crust may be thought of as the sum of an applied differential stress, plus a lithostatic pressure, plus an interstitial fluid pressure. The differential stress portion may be completely specified by nine components, six shear and three normal. IN a previous study' of the carbide phase of chromium steels, it was shown that chromium carbide (Cr7C3) is a more stable carbide than cementite (Fe3C) at tempering temperatures above about 500°C. in quenched steels containing from about r1to 7.5 per cent chromium. Below this temperature the carbide phase was found to consist of cementite in all of the steels examined. In the present investigation it was found that a similar change in the carbide phase takes place in molybdenum and in chromium-molybdenum steels at approximately the same tempering temperatures. The approximate ranges of occurrence of the alloy carbides Cr7C3, Cr4C, and Mo2C have been determined in steels containing up to 5 per cent chromium, 1 per cent molybdenum and 0.60 per cent carbon. The experimental steels were made in small high-frequency furnaces from Armco ingot iron, low-carbon ferrochromium and calcium molybdate and were poured into 2-in. ingots, which were forged to 1-in. round bars. Sections of the bars were heated to the carbide-solution temperature and cooled rapidly to induce austenite transformation at relatively low temperatures. The steels were subject to some segregation, therefore comparatively high temperatures were necessary to dissolve all of the carbides. The microstructure of the quenched specimens was examined to verify the belief that the carbides had been dissolved, and also to determine the nature of the nonmartensitic structure of incompletely hardened steels. Ferrite and pseudomartensite were present in some of the specimens, but all specimens were quenched at such a rate that pearlite was not formed, in order to ensure the formation of the carbides at temperatures lower than about 500°C. It had been found previously' that in chromium steels the chromium carbide could be produced by transformation of austenite in the pearlite range above 500°C., and, in order to start the tempering treatment with the carbide present as cementite, the absence of pearlite was considered to be essential. The specimens were tempered for 64 hr. to permit the formation of the stable carbide. After tempering, the specimens were submitted to microscopic and X-ray examination. The carbides were separated either electrolytically in a 5 per cent HCl electrolyte or with an acidified copper-potassium chloride solution. The crystal structure of the carbide phases was determined by the Debye-Scherrer type of X-ray patterns. The X-ray patterns obtained from specimens near the boundaries between two types of carbides were generally weak and diffuse as compared with the other patterns. For this reason, and because the more soluble components may be masked, the boundaries between the phases could not be determined precisely. However, the X-ray analysis of electrolytically separated carbides has given consistently reproducible results

INTRODUCTION As part of a general project to simulate a concentrator, the Brenda Mines Limited secondary crushing plant, located near Peachland, B. C., was sampled during the summer/winter of 1975 and during the summer of 1978 to develop a digital crushing plant simulator specific to the Brenda operation. The purpose of this simulator was to study the influence of manipulable process variables on important responses, to permit study of alternative circuit configurations if desired and to perform off-line optimization. This chapter describes the methodology employed to develop the simulator (1,2) along with typical applications thereof. SECONDARY CRUSHING PLANT FLOWSHEET Figure 1 is a schematic diagram of the Brenda Mines Ltd. secondary crushing plant circuit. The 41,000 tonne coarse ore stockpile(a) is -17.8 cm oversize (3B belt) from two 2.4 m x 6.1 m double deck vibrating screens (not shown). The screens are fed by 2 conveyor belts operated in series with two 198 cm apron feeders that handle discharge from a 152 cm x 226 cm primary gyratory crusher(520 KW). The primary crusher (not shown) treats up to 2725 tonne/hr of run of mine ore. Minus 1.9 cm undersize from the primary screens (#19 belt), referred to as the primary fines, joins secondary screen undersize (#18 belt) for conveyance to fine ore bins (not shown). Feed from the coarse ore stockpile is transferred by means of vibrating feeders and two 120 cm conveyors (#6 and #7) to transfer belts #8 and #9 (Figure 1). The belts feed two secondary 2.1 m standard heavy duty cone crushers (bl and b2). Each crusher is equipped with a modified coarse mantle liner and a standard coarse bowl liner. Mantle throw is 9.2 cm; nominal close side set is 3.2 cm. Crusher .countershafts (443 rpm) are driven by single 260 KW synchronous motors (710 rpm). Discharge from the secondary cone crushers joins discharge from four 2.1 m tertiary heavy duty shorthead cone crushers (fl, f2, f3 and f4). With the exception of the cavity (modified medium mantle liner and standard coarse bowl liner; close side set is nominal .84 cm) and motor (224 KW), these machines are similar to the secondary crushers. The combined discharge is transferred from a 183 cm conveyor to #14 belt which empties into a 1452 tonne secondary screen surge bin (c). Vibrating feeders beneath the bins feed five 2.4 m x 6.1 m double deck vibrating screens (dl, d2, d3, d4 and d5) sloped at 200 from the horizontal. THE empirical character of plasticity analysis insures a continuing need for measurements of the yield surfaces of anisotropic materials. Recently, Wheeler and Ireland (W-I) proposed that an octahedral yield locus could be constructed on the basis of six Knoop hardness indentations. Such simplicity would have obvious appeal, if it led to consistently dependable results. In other recent work, a much more straightforward (and more tedious) method of measurement was used to establish all quadrants of the plane-stress yield loci for two substantially anisotropic titanium alloys.2,3 The same materials have since been reex-amined by the W-I method with results being reported here. A full description of the stress state under a Knoop indentor would be complex. In principle, however, this can be avoided in relating the hardness number to a plane-stress yield locus, by the expedient of superimposing the appropriate hydrostatic component on that state of stress. Six possible orientations of in-dentor on orthogonal (symmetry) planes, along (principal) coordinate directions, are illustrated in Fig. 1(0). Pictured in Fig. l(b) are normal-stress components nominally associated with indentation n: o2(H), directly proportional to the Khn in this case, together with By overlaying a hydrostatic tension, ah, that in general is equal to the stress state around the indentation is reduced to one of plane stress in the x-y plane for which the stress ratio is a The key step in the W-I yield-locus construction is to represent the Khn for any indentor orientation as a vector quantity on the octahedral plane. In the plotting, the vector is given as deviatoric stress components along the principal axes in the ratio , where represents the direction of the minor (width) diagonal and 1 that of the major (length) diagonal. There is no attempt by W-I to justify the 7/1, although it might be supposed that the value originates in the usual ratio of major to minor diagonals in a Knoop indentation of about 7/1. If that were its origin, the link to the deviatoric stress ratio would presumably be made by first taking 7/1 and then turning to the Levy-Mises equation for isotropic material: Interpreted in this way, the W-1 approach seems arbitrary and even contradictory. Yet it would still be favored by two circumstances: the deformation under a Knoop indentor approaches plane strain: when dcw/del =a; and the shape of the locus where plane strain is represented is not overly sensitive either to the exact value of dc,/dcl or to the degree of anisotropy, within a rather wide range of both variables. IN all branches of the chemical industry, corrosion plays a very costly part unless it is suitably com-batted, and as a result it is probably correct that chemical and design engineers are more corrosion conscious in the field of chemical industry than in others. Most metals occur in nature in combination with other elements. The refined or reduced state to which man converts them for his use, by removing the combining elements, leaves them in an unstable condition. Therefore in most of the media to which the metals are exposed they are constantly combining with the constituents of their environment, or in other words they are continually being corroded. Similarly, nonmetallic materials are corroded by undergoing chemical change. The rate at which corrosion takes place varies widely from metal to metal and medium to medium. In practically all cases the corrosion of metals in solutions (electrolytes) is electrolytic in nature and the rate of corrosion is dependent on many factors such as temperature, pressure, internal stresses, galvanic action, metal-ion concentration, and so on. In the chemical industry substances must be handled which are particularly corrosive to materials of construction. At the chemical plants of The Consolidated Mining and Smelting Co. of Canada, Ltd. (otherwise known as Cominco), situated at Trail, B. C., Canada, the following are some of the materials that have to be handled: Gases. Sulphur dioxide, sulphur trioxide, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, oxygen, hydrogen fluoride, ammonia, hydrogen sulphide, and oxides of nitrogen. Liquids. Solutions of ammonium sulphate, ammonium sulphite, ammonium nitrate, caustic soda and potash, sulphuric acid, nitric acid, hydrofluo-silicic acid, hydrofluoric acid, phosphoric acid, aqua ammonia, and formic acid. Solids. Gypsum (containing phosphoric acid), ammonium sulphate, ammonium nitrate, phosphate rock, caustic soda, potash, and phosphate fertilizers.

THIS communication describes a series of experiments in which dislocation etch pitting was used to ascertain the depth of damage in crystals which were mechanically polished or which were cut with either a commercial metallographic cut-off wheel,* a com- All specimens were cut from single crystals of American Smelting and Refining Co. 99.999+ pct pure copper which were grown from the melt by the Bridge-man technique. The test specimens were disks, with faces being (111) planes and the disk axis a (111) direction. The disks were annealed in a vacuum of 10-5 Torr for 24 hr at 950°C prior to cutting or polishing and were given a light electropolishing in an ortho-phosphoric acid bath before etch pitting. Both Youngs1 and Livingston's2 reagents were used for etch pitting and the reagents gave identical quantitative results; however Livingston's reagent produced less staining and so all photomicrographs shown are of {111) surfaces etched with this solution. The surface of the annealed crystals showed well-defined subboundaries and a density of dislocations of about 1 X 106 per sq cm excluding those present in subboundaries, Fig. 1. The depth of cold work produced during mechanical polishing was determined after an annealed specimen was mounted in a paraffin holding block to protect it from extraneous damage. The exposed (111) surface was ground on metallographic papers and then polished on billiard cloth through 0.05-p alumina abrasive. It was necessary to remove about 0.3 mm (-0.01 in.) to obtain a structure representative of the annealed sur- face, indicating that the crystal was damaged to this depth during mechanical polishing.
