THE ball mill has superseded stamps for the reduction of gold ores in most of the recently designed plants, partly because stamps are not suited to die fine grinding required for flotation, and partly to save space and construction cost. Experience with these new mills seems to confirm the idea that it is more difficult to recover bold from a ball-mill product than it is when stamps are used for crushing. Microscopical examination of particles of gold that have passed through a ball mill show that the gold has been pounded into exceedingly thin flakes coated with a talcy surface, making it more difficult to save by amalgamation, flotation, or concentrating. Bearing in mind that gold is extremely malleable, it seems reasonable that this should be so. Contrast the action in a stamp battery, where the crushing is by impact in the presence of mercury, to the grinding and rolling under pressure in a ball mill. It is well known that a better recovery can be obtained by panning or amalgamation from a sample of ore that has been crushed by mortar and pestle than from one reduced on a bucking board.

Forty-six alloys covering the complete concentration range of the Nb-Rh system were examined by metallographic and X-ray methods; solubility limits of terminal ad intermediate phases and transformation and solidus temperatures were determined. There are nine intermediate phases; two eutectic, five peritectic, two eutectoid, and three peritectnid reactions were encountered. The experimental methods and the constitution diagram are described in Part I. Part 11 deals with the crys -tallography and relation of the intermediate phases. The Nb-Rh system was selected for study for three reasons: first, it was hoped that the anticipated similarity of the Nb-Rh phase diagram to the Ta-Rh1 and Ta-Ir2 diagrams treated earlier (see also Ref. 3) and to the Nb-1r4 diagram treated simultaneously would allow a crystallographic and comparative evaluation of the intermediate phases in these related systems; second, it was likely that the previous experimental methods could be carried over without significant change; and third, it was expected that the interesting mechanical properties of the a1 phase of the Ta-Rh and Ta-Ir systems would also be encountered in similar phases of the new systems, and that these phases could be investigated more closely. The phase diagram had not been treated fully in the literature; only brief surveys of some intermediate phases were found.5-7 It was attempted to cover the details of the phase boundaries, Part I, as well as to present the crystallography of the intermediate phases, Part 11. EXPERIMENTAL METHODS Specimen Preparation and Treatment. The following high-purity starting materials were used. 1) Niobium powder, 99.8 pct pure, mesh size -60 +200, from Wah Chang Corp., Albany, Ore. The analysis furnished by the supplier showed the following major impurities: Ta, <500 ppm; Zr, <500 ppm; 0, 300 ppm; Fe, 280 ppm; Ti, <I50 ppm; W, Si, <100 ppm; C, N, 30 ppm; all other impurities, <30 ppm. 2) Rhodium powder, ground sponge, 99.9+ pct pure, mesh size -80, from J. Al3Ni whiskers were chemically extracted from unidirectionally solidified Al-A13Ni eutectic ingots, bent into loops, and heated for 0.1 to 10 hr at 320°, 415", and 510°C. The initial strains ranged from 0.003 to 0.055. In all cases, permanent plastic deformation was noted after heat treatment. The deformation consisted of relatively uniform bending at low stresses and temperatures and short times and kinking followed by fracture at high stresses and temperatures and long times. After kinking, the whisker segments adjacent to the kinks were found to have straightened, which is evidence of a dislocation condensation mechanism. The range of temperatures and strains at which time dependent plastic deformation was found indicates that creep of whiskers probably plays a role in the creep of A13Ni whisker-reinforced aluminum. WHISKERS may be defined as nearly perfect single crystals which exhibit high strength. Because they can support high stresses at relatively low strains, they have been successfully employed in reinforcing metals at both ambient and elevated temperatures. In studying the creep behavior of A13Ni whisker-reinforced aluminum at elevated temperatures,1,2 it was noted that the composites exhibited measurable creep deformation. This investigation of the creep relaxation of individual A13Ni whiskel, extracted chemically from the composite was initiated to determine if creep of whiskers could con. "bute to the overall creep of the composite material. Many observations of plastic deformation of metal and halide whiskers have been made. Brenner3-8 noted that copper, silver, and iron whiskers exhibited heterogeneous plastic deformation at room temperature when strained beyond their yield points. Gyulai9 and Gordon10 observed plastic deformation of relatively large (>3 µ) NaCl and KC1 whiskers, although the smallest, most perfect whiskers were completely elastic. Eisner" noted plastic deformation and microcreep of iron and silicon whiskers at room temperature after straining beyond the yield point. Whiskers reported to exhibit creep at stresses below the yield point were zinc1&apos;-" and Silicon.15 Cabrera and price" observed some zinc whiskers which crept at room temperature after a short incubation period but then stopped creeping after a short time. Because some of their specimens exhibited no creep, they concluded that those whiskers that crept were relatively imperfect. Pearson, Reed, and Feldman15 observed similar creep behavior of silicon whiskers at 800°C. They also concluded that creep of the whiskers was a result of imperfections in their crystals. Brenner16 observed delayed failure of A12O3 whiskers at elevated temperatures but found no evidence of plastic deformation up to 2030°C (99 pct of E.EREINAN and M.SALKIND,JuniorMembers AIME,are Research Scientist and Chief, respectively, Advanced Metallurgy Section, United Aircraft Research Laboratories, East Hartford, Conn. Maunscript submitted April 5, 1968. IMD the melting temperature). Brenner also noted7 that some copper and iron whiskers exhibited delayed kinking above 350°C while others did not. One can conclude from these observations that small relatively perfect whiskers could exhibit completely elastic behavior during sustained elevated-temperature loading of composites. Since A13Ni whiskers tested in both bending and tension were found to exhibit no evidence of plastic deformation at room temperature&apos;7&apos;18 this study was initiated to determine whether or not creep of A13Ni whiskers occurred at the elevated temperatures at which creep in the composites was observed. Whiskers were chemically extracted from ingots of unidirectionally solidified A1-A13Ni eutectic, constrained in bending to various elastic strains and heat-treated. The bending constraints were removed after heat treatment and the amount of permanent set was taken as a measure of the time-dependent plastic deformation. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES Ingots of eutectic Al-A13Ni containing nominally 6.2 wt pet Ni were unidirectionally solidified at approximately 11 cm per hr using a process described elsewhere.19,20 The starting materials were 99.99 pct pure. Cylindrical sections cut from the center of each ingot were placed in a 3 pct aqueous solution of hydrochloric acid and the whiskers were extracted as described previously.17 The whiskers nearest the surface were blackened somewhat due to overexposure to the acid while the center of the ingot was being dissolved These partially attacked whiskers were discarded. An intermediate zone of silver-gray-colored whiskers was collected and stored in methanol for use in relaxation experiments. Individual long pieces of A13Ni whiskers were placed on Fisher Precleaned Microscope Slides. These normally straight whiskers were bent elastically into arcs or loops of varying radii by manipulating their ends with a slender probe. The mass attraction between the whisker and the probe was sufficient to cause the whisker to follow the probe. The whiskers were retained in the elastic bend by the surface tension of a fine residual film on the slides. By using long whiskers, the action of the surface tension on the unlooped ends of the whisker allowed high elastic strains to be maintained in the loops. After each whisker was bent, a photomicrograph was taken for use in measuring the bending strain. The range of strains studied was 0.003 to 0.055. The bent whiskers were then encapsulated in Pyrex tubes at pressures between 10"6 and 5 x 10"6 mm of mercury and heat-treated at 320°, 415°, and 510°C (respectively 53, 61, and 70 pct of the peritectic decomposition temperature). After each heat treatment, the liquid film on the slides was found to have dried, but the whiskers were held in their original shapes by a residue on the slide. The use of the material balance equation to estimate the volume of hydrocarbons originally present in a reservoir, whose producing mechanism is partly due to water drive, has been discussed in the literature by several authors. There is no general agreement upon the possibility of obtaining reliable results by this method. Gas reservoirs in contact with an active aquifer are considered in this paper. Theoretical considerations based on the cybernetic principle of uncertainty (which states that the internal structure of a system cannot be uniquely determined from its observed external behavior) lead to the conclusion that the volume of gas originally present in a reservoir of this type cannot be uniquely determined from its past history. The range of values which encompasses the actual value of the reserves varies from case to case and must be determined by either numerical or analogical methods. Results obtained for six gas fields are reported. All these fields were produced with small fluctuations in their production rates, as is common practice for gas reservoirs; no gas storage fields were considered. Results obtained show that reserves values in a range of 1 to 2, associated with appropriate aquifers, allow the matching of the reservoir past history with mean-square deviations less than the experimental errors involved in pressure and produclion measurements. Similar results have been found in several other partial water drive gas reservoirs. From these results it is concluded that gas reserves cannot be uniquely determined from the past performance of partial water drive reservoirs, at least in cases where the reservoir has been submitted to small fluctuations in the production rates, and pressure data of normal accuracy are available. INTRODUCTION A number of authors have analyzed the problem of estimating the reserves originally present in a partial water drive reservoir from its past pressure-production performance. Literature which deals with this subject can be grouped, according to their conclusions, as follows. 1. A reliable value for the reserves can be obtained even if reservoir data (pressure and cumulative production) are affected by errors within the normal range.&apos;-&apos; 2. A reliable value for the reserves can be obtained only if reservoir data are very accurate&apos;- or if past production performance has been subjected to abrupt variations in the production rate."&apos; 3. No unique value for the reserves can be obtained from reservoir past production performance. This conclusion has been based upon theoretical considerations" and verified in several field cases. The purpose of this paper, which deals only with partial water drive gas reservoirs, is to test the above conclusions against actual field cases. Some theoretical considerations on this problem are also presented. THEORETICAL CONSIDERATIONS As the behavior of a gas reservoir communicating with an aquifer depends on both the aquifer and the reservoir characteristics, the physical system to be studied is the combined gas reservoir plus aquifer. The information which is available for studying the performance of such a system is the well production rates and bottom-hole pressures, all given as functions of time. The external behavior of the reservoir-aquifer system is therefore described by 2n input variables (Gp, Wp,) and n output variables (p,), n being the number of wells in the reservoir. In reservoir engineering it is common practice to consider the reservoir as a whole, disregarding the internal distribution of pressures and of producing wells. This practice is equivalent to substituting the above multi-variable system with a single-variable system, where the average reservoir pressure is the only output variable and the cumulative production G,(t) and W,(t) are the input variables. The internal structure of such a system, defined by initial gas reserves G, aquifer shape and dimensions, boundary conditions and petrophysical parameters distribution throughout the aquifer, is unknown. Therefore, from a cybernetic point of view the system is a "black-box It has been demonstrated" that for a blackbox the indetermination principle holds. Accordingly, the number of different internal structures (or set of parameters) which can account for the observed external behavior is infinite. In electrochemical separation of metals, it is necessary to control the potential applied between the electrodes so that only the desired electrode reactions can occur. A knowledge of the minimum potential needed for a given electrode reaction to take place continuously is therefore pertinent to the success of the process. In molten chloride systems at high temperatures, activation polarization is believed to be small,1,2 so the minimum potential needed for the electrolytic decomposition of a molten metal chloride MC1n (n = valence of the metal ion) is therefore essentially the equilibrium electrode potential E of the metal-chlorine galvanic cell in the solution. If the decomposition products are pure M and chlorine at a pressure of p atm, E*Eo-rt/nf in [i] Since EO (the standard electrode potential of MCln) is a constant at a given temperature and R (the gas constant), and F (the Faraday&apos;s constant) are all constants, the variation of E with the electrolytic bath conditions is largely determined by the effect of the latter on the activity of the metal chloride amcln (standard state = pure MC1,). Measurement of E and study of how amCin varies with temperature and concentration, the nature of the solvent, and that of the coexisting solutes are therefore pertinent in the selection of optimum operating conditions for the electrochemical separation of metals. Because of its low melting point, high decomposition potentials of its components, and the low solubility of heavier metals in it, the LiC1-KC1 eutectic melt is a useful solvent and has been used in the electrodeposition of Mo,3Ce,4 and u5 metals. Senderoff and Brenner3 measured the potentials of Zn/Zn++, Fe/Fe++, Cu/Cu+, Mo/Mo+++, and Ag/Ag+ against an Ag/AgCl (pure) reference electrode at 600°C and a concentration of 4.1 mole pct of each chloride and came to the conclusion that complex ion formation occurred in some of the melts. Laitinen and LiUe gave an electromotive force series at 450°C for a number of {Metal/Metal ions (unit activity)) electrodes in LiC1-KC1 eutectic melt, the {pt/pt++ (unit activity)) electrode being chosen as the reference. Walker and Danly7 studied the ther-modynamic properties of NiC12 in LiC1-KC1 eutectic melt over a wide range of temperatures and concentrations by measuring the electrode potential between a nickel electrode and a chlorine electrode in the melt. Since potential measurements made by using the chlorine reference electrode are of more direct significance both in the study of electrochemical separation and in the evaluation of the thermodynamic properties of the melt, it is therefore decided to measure the electrode potentials of cells of the type {M/MCin (mole fraction = N) in LiC1-KC1 eutectic melt/Cl2 over a range of N values and temperature for a number of metal chlorides. The hydrogen reduction of Cr2O3 to chromium metal was found to be feasible at very low water-vapor concentrations, corresponding to dew points of -38° to -24°C, over a temperature range of 1130" to 1490°C. Hydrogen reduction under these conditions was predicted by the calculated equilibrium curves which also indicated that CrzOs is reduced directly to chromium without forming the intermediate oxide, CrO. This reduction path was confirmed by X-ray diffraction analysis. The percent reduction of Cr2O3 at each reaction temperature was constant with time, suggesting an inhibiting effect of water vapor. A small increase in the residual water-vapor concentration of a single temperature, 1490°C, strongly retarded the rate of reduction This effect was expressed by an empim&apos;cal equation which indicated a direct relationship between "distance from equilibrium" and the rate of reduction. me effect of temperature over the range of 1130" to 1490°C was expressed in an Arvhenius plot of log rate vs reciprocal absolute temperature. From this curve the apparent enthalpy of activation was found to be 29,600 cal. Based on the hypothesis that the rate of reductiun is contvolled at the oxide-metal interface, an over-all rate equation consistent with the experimental data and the thery of absolute reaction rates was formulated. A simplification of this expression to an Arrhenius equation was justified by the overriding effect of temperature on the rate of reaction for the minimum water-vapor concentration range. MOST of the metals in Subgroup V1 of the periodic table can be prepared commercially by direct reduction of their oxides by hydrogen or carbon monoxide, at temperatures considerably below the melting points of both the metals and their oxides. Chromium is an exception, being generally reduced from its ore, Cr2O3 . FeO, by silicon in an electric arc furnace which operates above the melting point of the Fe-Cr alloy or above the melting point of chro- mium if a chromium oxide be the starting material. In reduction of chromium oxide by hydrogen, either reduction does not occur at all or the rate of reduction is extremely slow. Theoretical considerations based on the high, exothermic, free energy of formation of Cr2O3 compared to the oxides of the other Subgroup VI metals, molybdenum, tungsten, and uranium, would also suggest a slow rate of reaction and a high activation energy. Interest in the direct gaseous reduction of fine-powdered ores in fluidized beds was considered justification for examination of this reaction. In order to develop a basis for a continuing study of the commercial feasibility of the direct gaseous reduction of chromite, a study of the kinetics of the reduction of Cr2O3 with hydrogen was undertaken. To the authors&apos; knowledge no accurate kinetic data for this reaction have been obtained. Neither has an activation energy been determined nor has an attempt been made to establish a mechanism of reaction. LITERATURE Maier10 compared the data of I. Y. Granaat,6 H. von Wartenburg and S. Aoyama, and G. Grube and M. Flad7 with that derived from calorimetric and ther-modynamic properties for the equilibria for the reduction of Cr2O3 with hydrogen. These results, plotted as the log of the equilibrium constant vs absolute temperature for the reduction of Cr2O3 and the intermediate oxide, CrO, to chromium, show agreement between the differently derived data. In both cases the equilibrium constants were extremely low. Maier showed that, over a temperature range of 1000° to 2000°K, Cr2O3 is more readily reducible than CrO. Granat assumed that CrO was preferentially formed from Cr2o3 above 1100°C. Grube and Flad&apos;s analysis of their reaction products in the 895" to 1000°C range indicated the coexistence of only Cr2O3 and chromium. The hydrogen reduction of the other Subgroup VI metals, molybdenum, tungsten, and uranium, shows that reduction of the higher oxide proceeds through all of the intermediate oxides before being reduced to the metal. Since evidence pointed to an anomaly in the reduction behavior of Cr2O3, the authors investigated the reduction path of Cr2Os.to chromium. This was done theoretically with more recently available free-energy data and experimentally by X-ray diffraction analysis. This work reinforces Maier&apos;s conclusion.

Measurements of gravity with gravimeters have come into increased use in this country and abroad in the past five years. Probably 100 to 125 gravimeter parties are working in the United States alone. In oil exploration, gravimeter methods have relegated the gravity pendulum definitely to second place, if not third, and now closely rival and possibly surpass the torsion balance in many applications. Gravimeters have lately been applied in mining, although it is doubtful whether they will ever replace electrical or magnetic methods in this work. Notwithstanding the widespread application of gravimeters, there has been no article covering the entire field in the domestic or foreign literature. The purpose of this paper is to meet the demand for comprehensive engineering information on the subject. The working principles of a number of gravimeters will be illustrated and treated in relation to the action of corresponding seismometers and astatization methods. The mathematical discussion of theory has been confined to the most necessary fundamentals and been given in as elementary form as possible. A description of calibration methods constitutes the last part of the paper. The symbols shown at the top of page 197 will be used in equations throughout the paper. Dynamic and Static Gravity Methods Methods of measuring gravity fall into two groups: dynamic and static methods. The first group involves the measurement of time. Examples are: determinations of the period of oscillation of a pendulum, measurements involving the free fall of a body, and comparisons of gravity with the centrifugal force of a rotating body. Measurements in the second group of gravity methods are concerned with deflections of certain indicators when the force of gravity is in equilibrium with another comparison force.

IN dealing with segregation in babbitt, and its effect on the final cast structure, which is a bearing, it is obviously impossible to cover all of the compositions manufactured. Each composition, of course, will exhibit certain specific types of segregation. However, as examples,, two compositions of babbitt are presented: one a tin-base of well-known analysis and the other a lead-base, which in the past few years has found wide usage. Bearings usually are cast either statically or centrifugally; therefore the effect of these two methods on segregation is presented. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE A slab of babbitt 1/2 in. thick by 5 in. wide and 17 in. long was cast, using a book mold with the long edge vertical. An A.S.T.M. grade 2 babbitt was used (3.5 per cent copper, 7.5 per cent antimony, remainder tin), to which 0.10 per cent tellurium had been added. Unfortunately, no metal without tellurium was available. The mold to hold the babbitt was heated to approximately 300°F., the temperature being judged by the babbitter. The pouring temperature of the babbitt was 875°F. (470°C.). One slab was made by allowing the babbitt to cool without stirring. The other slab was stirred during the entire cooling cycle. This stirring consisted of a vigorous churning or puddling into the mold until complete solidification had taken place. Three samples were removed from these slabs. One was taken at the extreme bottom, another half way to the top, and another at the extreme top, all at the center of the width. Chemical, macroscopic and microscopic examination was made of all samples. Table I shows the chemical analyses obtained at the described positions [ ] in the slab. The analyses show no serious amount of gravity segregation. Microscopic examination from edge to edge of the slab showed little change in structure. From top to bottom there was a progressive coarsening of the grain size in the stirred slab but little change in the slab that was not stirred (Fig. I). No definite exhibit of segregation could be detected. In line with our experimental study on the tin-base babbitts, we cast an almost duplicate slab using A.S.T.M. Alloy No. 15, containing 0.9 to 1.25 per cent tin, 14.75 to 15.5. per cent antimony, 0.80 to 1.25 per cent arsenic and 0.4 per cent copper. The slab was 16 in. long and 3/8 in. thick, cast with the long side vertical. One slab was allowed to cool normally and the other was stirred continually during cooling. A technique, equipment, and a compound have been developed and field tested for sealing tubing joint thread leaks without removing the tubing from the well. This eliminates the necessity of killing the well with possible damage to the producing formation, which could result if it were exposed to drilling mud. A thread sealing compound, developed and tested in the laboratory, is introduced into the tubing and squeezed into the joint to eliminate the leak. A high percentage of successful field applications have eflected an appreciable cost reduction in repairing leaking tubing strings in East Texas and in the Louisiana Gulf Coast area. INTRODUCTION In producing oil and gas wells the industry has been plagued with a never ending problem of tubing connection leakage. This situation is becoming increasingly more significant as more gas wells are placed on production and as higher pressures are encountered at greater depths of current drilling. Substantial progress has been made in minimizing thread leaks by careful handling and cleaning of joints and by the use of improved sealing compounds in combination with controlled makeup. But even with the use of the best known methods and sealing materials during initial makeup, occasional leaks through tubing joint threads appear inevitable. In some instances, tubing joints in high-pressure gas wells have been found to leak gas at relatively less pressure than that at which the tubing had been tested satisfactorily using liquid. Many expedients have been employed to prevent the physical replacement of tubing when leaks have developed. Perhaps the most commonly used is the sodium silicate treatment in which the solution is lubricated into the tubing to form a crystalline plug in the leak. Generally, any benefit realized is of a temporary nature. In addition to field studies on handling and makeup of tubing, extensive laboratory work has been undertaken on the development and testing of thread dopes.&apos; Also, substantial effort has been devoted to testing tubing joints using high-pressure gas as a pressure medium.&apos; The results of this work have emphasized that tubing joints are susceptible to occasional leaks, especially when subjected to relatively high differential pressures. To cope with the problem of leaking connections, an extensive investigation was undertaken to devise means of sealing leaks without removing the tubing from the well and without reducing the inside diameter of the tubing. The purpose of this paper is to present a technique, together with the associated equipment and compound, which have been developed for effecting a seal of leaking tubing in place. DISCUSSION Work was initiated simultaneously on two ventures: (1) to develop a satisfactory leak sealing compound and (2) to develop tools necessary to find the leak and place the compound. Leak Sealing Compound In the development of a sealing compound, tests were conducted on those compounds commercially available which include: (1) conventional thread lubricants, (2) thermo-setting resins and (3) other materials which held promise of effecting a seal. Although none proved completely satisfactory in their available form, two commercial compounds proved nearly equally effective in sealing leaks during laboratory tests after proportioned quantities of graded silica had been added. Field usage has indicated that the preferred compound is one prepared of an aluminum-stearate base thinned to the proper constituency and carrying a mixture of fine mesh graphite and graded silica. The compound developed by Humble Oil & Refining Co. is designated as Tubing Thread Leak Sealant 800. Placement Tools and Technique In developing tools to detect joint leaks and to place the sealing compound, work was done initially on wireline equipment. Preliminary designs were completed of a tool somewhat on the order of a pressure bomb to test individual joints with gas at high pressure to determine if the joint was leaking. THE most effective means of strengthening hot-rolled ferritic steels are grain refinement and precipitation hardening. It is well-known that grain refinement increases both the strength and the toughness. However, the upper limit of yield strength obtainable by grain refinement alone is about 60,000 psi,&apos;12 i.e., without the formation of acicular structures of lower toughness. The most economical means of obtaining higher strengths is the addition of small amounts of elements such as columbium, vanadium, and titanium which form carbonitrides. These precipitates are very effective in increasing the strength, but the ductile-brittle transition temperature is is Although it is agreed upon that precipitation decreases the toughness, there has been little effort to isolate the causative aspects of embrittlement. The purposes of this research are to assess quantitatively the embrittlement associated with different precipitate distributions and morphologies, and to correlate the degree of the embrittlement with the microstruc-ture. In this manner, a more fundamental insight into the mechanism of embrittlement may be gained. The steel selected for this purpose was a low-carbon, columbium-bearing steel which, after solution treatment, was aged in various time-temperature cycles while attempting to hold all other microstructural variables constant. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURE The composition of the steel used in this investigation is given in Table I. Starting with commercially hot-rolled material 0.074 and 0.280 in. thick, tensile blanks were cut from the thinner material and sub-size Charpy blanks from the thicker stock. The steel had been rolled using a low finishing temperature and rapid cooling after hot rolling to produce grain refinement. Also, chemical-extraction analysis and electron-microscopic examination revealed that the cooling was rapid enough to suppress any significant precipitation of CbC. Therefore, the as-rolled steel is essentially in the solution-treated condition in terms of the precipitation reaction, and it was used as the base material in this investigation. The room-temperature tensile properties of the as-rolled steel aged at 1100", 1150", and 1200°F for various time intervals were determined, see Table 11. The ductile-brittle transition behavior was studied for smooth and notched tensile specimens, and longitudinal half-size (0.200 in. thick) Charpy V notch specimens aged at 1100" and 1150°F for various times, also Table 11. In addition, tensile specimens aged for single times at 1050" and 1200°F were evaluated with respect to their ductile-brittle transition. Only one 1050°F treatment was used because of the extremely slow kinetics of precipitation at this temperature and because no significant difference between 1100°F aging was observed. Only one treatment at 1200°F was used because aging at this temperature alters the shape of the grain boundary cementite particles present in this steel and complicates analysis. The design of the tensile specimens is given in Fig.1.

AT the Edwards mine a 4 by 81/2-ft two-compartment shaft is used for men and supplies in the older workings down to the 900-ft level. All ore is hoisted through a 5 by 15-ft three-compartment vertical shaft which extends to the 1500-ft level. Ore pockets are on the 1300- and 1500-ft levels. The two-compartment countershaft used below the latter level is 6 by 12 ft inclined at 42°. Ore from the countershaft is hoisted to the 1350-ft level where it flows by gravity to the 1500-ft level ore pocket. One-ton skips are used in balance in the countershaft and two-ton skips, also in balance, from the 1500-It level to the surface. These skips are slung under the man cages. Each level has an ore pocket of 200 tons&apos; capacity. Development at Edwards is similar to that at Balmat except that haulage drifts are only 7 by 7 ft. They are mucked with Eimco-Finlay No. 12 loaders. A drill carriage similar to that used at Balmat is being tried out on the new 2300-ft level, the present bottom of the mine. Drifts are driven below grade and later raised 6 in. and ballasted with waste leaving a ditch 6 by 12 in. at one side for drainage. All development is done on an incentive bonus system, the miner paying for his explosives.

The elevated-temperature steady-state creep behavior of polycrystalline a Zr was studied in vacuo under constant tensile stress. The experiments were conducted from 660° to 845°C over the stress range 870 to 5400 psi. The steady-state creep rate, is, of a Zr was found to be related to the applied stress, a, and temperature, T, by the equation where C is a constant. Two interpretations of the data are considered, each requiring different values of the parameters ß, Q, and . It is shown that this formula can be derived using Gilman&apos;s phenomeno logical equation relating dislocation velocity to the shear stress for the case where dislocation mobility is limited by the nucleation of kink motion. From the fundamental dependence of strain rate on dislocation velocity and the density of mobile dislocations, the factor exp(ßo) can be related to the stress dependence of the dislocation density, and Q to the energy of kink formation. The two interpretations considered are as follows: Case I—the parameters are adjusted so that the equation above describes the data over the entire range of stress and temperature, implying that creep is controlled exclusively by dislocation glide; Case IIthe parameters are adjusted to allow for the possibility that creep is diffusion-controlled at high stresses but glide-controlled at low stresses. For both cases the values of the parameters are within the spread permitted by the data. Factors favorable to the observation of the unusual stress -dependence of i, for a Zr are discussed and it is shown that the anomalously rapid rates of self-diffusion and the low modulus on the principal glide system are primarily responsible for the anomalous creep behavior. Metal-lograflhic observations are presented and discussed with reference to the overall creep behavior. PREVIOUS investigations of the creep behavior of a Zr have been conducted from room temperature to about 500C The results of these investigations are primarily of engineering significance because of the variety of conditions under which they were carried out, and the low testing temperatures employed. Little information is available concerning the fundamental nature of the elevated-temperature creep behavior of a Zr. This investigation of the creep behavior of a Zr above half the melting temperature (the melting temperature, T,, of a Zr is estimated to be about 1860"K was initiated because there are two significant anomalies of the physical properties of a Zr: a) the rate of self-diffusion in polycrystalline a Zr is anomalously rapid: b) both Young&apos;s modulus for polycrystalline a Zr and the shear modylus as-sociated with the prismatic slip system { 1010)( 1120) (the principal slip system in a Zr 7) have anomalously large temperature variations The importance of these quantities to the understanding of creep behavior has been demonstrated, and it was hoped that this investigation would provide a critical test of the predictions based upon the analysis of creep data for other pure metals. However, as the investigation progressed it became increasingly clear that the unusual creep behavior of a Zr could not be analyzed in a conventional manner. 1) EXPERIMENTAL EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES Two grades of zirconium, designated A and B, were used in this investigation. The analyses, as supplied by the vendors, are presented in Table I. Material A, with a nominal purity of 99.84 pct, was supplied by the Wah Chang Corp. in the form of cold-rolled sheet from which specimens were machined without further fabrication. Material B, with a nominal purity of 99.95 pct, was purchased from the Nuclear Materials and Equipment Corp. in the form of iodide crystal bar.

The Fifth Class, that of the OXIDES, is subdivided into three sections, according to the positive element present. The oxides of the non-metal silicon are placed by themselves, but it will be noted that the compounds of the related element titanium are included with those of the metals proper. This last is made necessary by the fact that in one of its forms TiOz is isomorphous with MnOp and PbOz. A series of oxygen compounds which are properly to be viewed as salts, e.g., the species of the Spinel Group and a few others, are for convenience also included in this class.

Chemical upgrading testwork on Stillwater chomite concentrate shows that reduction roasting and leaching (sulfuric acid and/or ferric sulfate) can provide upgraded feed to ferrochromium furnaces for making upgraded ferrochromium. Two-stage reduction smelting in electric arc furnaces can make upgraded ferrochromium also. Sulfating roasts and leaching (acid and/or water) results using gaseous SO2—SO3 or solid ammonium sulfate were not satisfactory for upgrading chromite. Chemical upgrading of domestic Stillwater (Montana) chromite has been considered at various times1&apos;2&apos; to provide a material with higher chromium to iron ratio, more like foreign high grade ore, for the production of standard grade ferrochromium. Physical bene-ficiation of Stillwater chromite ore can provide a ratio, Cr/Fe, no higher than the ratio in the chromite mineral, which is approximately 1.7. For comparison the analyses of a foreign metallurgical grade chromite ore, a high grade electrostatic process Stillwater concentrate and a stockpile concentrate from the Stillwater ore are noted in Table I. Single stage smelting of the high grade foreign ore with a ratio, Cr/Fe, of 3.37 can provide a ferrochromium of over 65 pct chromium content. Similar smelting of the Stillwater concentrate with a ratio of 1.7 can provide a ferrochromium of 50 to 55 pct chromium content.&apos; It has been demonstrated on a pilot plant scale that chemically upgraded Stillwater chromite having a ratio, Cr/Fe, of 3.0 also can be smelted to provide a ferrochromium containing over 65 pct chromium.5 Two major considerations for an upgrading process are the ratio, Cr/Fe, in the product and the chromium recovery. A minimum ratio, Cr/Fe, of 3.0 is required in the product but for economic reasons a higher ratio is desirable for blending purposes as long as the recovery is satisfactory. Data from different kinds of chemical upgrading testwork are presented in this report. Some of the testwork was conducted to make a product which was not intended to be feed for ferrochrome smelting, but the data are considered pertinent to chemical upgrading. Results reported by others are noted also for comparison. WORK REPORTED BY OTHERS The U. S. Bureau of Mines has contributed much to the literature on chemical upgrading of chromite and a summary is given in Table 11. Reduction roasting and acid leaching were reported by Boericke and Bangert,1 by Lloyd and Gorst, et a1,2 and by Boericke3 to demonstrate very good success on a laboratory scale and only fair success in pilot plant tests for Stillwater (Benbow) concentrates. This work included basic studies on thermodynamic properties to explain the reduction and leaching results. Canadian workers, Downes and Morgan,9 have reported experimental success in upgrading a low grade Bird River chromite, similar to Stillwater material by the same process. Russian workers1&apos; have noted results on reduction tests of high grade chromite which may apply to low grade ores and which help in understanding the reduction process. The use of flux additives in the reduction process was an innovation of their work. The Canadian workers9 also reported other kinds of experiments, including autoclave leaching of the chromite in a limited amount of sulfuric acid. An insoluble basic chromium sulfate was formed and separated from soluble iron, magnesium, and aluminum sulfates to provide an upgraded material. U.S. Bureau of Mines workers, Lloyd, Rosenbzum, Home and Davis,&apos; reported on autoclave leaching of Benbow concentrates as a means of obtaining chromium alum for electrolysis. This last work required selective crystallization of alum to separate iron from chromium. Chloridizing roasting of Benbow and Mouat concentrates has been reported by Hunter and Banning6 and others8 to show that the iron chloride could be volatilized from the chromite to provide upgraded residues.

The use of computer models to design the ultimate open pit limits during feasibility studies as well as during long-range mine planning is becoming an enforced practice in all types of mining, e.g., ferrous, non-ferrous, and coal. As a result, the state of the art in computerized ultimate pit limit design methodologies and associated computing and optimizing techniques has advanced considerably in recent years. Unfortunately, very little has been published to date regarding the preferred ultimate pit limit design philosophy, i.e., optimizing us satisfying, or regarding the modeling approaches being used for different types of orebodies. This paper reviews the current state of the art in various modeling approaches and optimizing techniques that are in use for different types of deposits, through available literatures and personal communications.

It is the object of this paper to oppose unnecessary changes, and the introduction of new and confusing terms. From the earliest times of which we have ally record on the subject, iron has been divided into general classes. Whether iron was first known in the form of wrought iron or of steel, is a matter of no importance; but at the time when cast iron first became a prominent article of commerce, wrought iron and steel were old products— steel, at that time, being generally made from wrought iron by the process of cementation. As steel was then properly defined as iron containing more carbon than wrought iron, so cast iron was appropriately defined as iron containing more carbon than steel. Until the year 1776, when Huntsman first began the manufacture of a new kind of iron by melting wrought iron and steel in crucibles, the above definitions were all that could be desired. At first, probably, owing to imperfect appliances, only a highly carburized iron was melted in crucibles, and this led to its being called cast steel. If our ancestors had found a name for this material not involving the use of the word steel, we would have been saved the trouble of the present discussion. As the arts developed, new uses were found for steel, and the products of the crucible were varied, until at the present day it is quite common to find steel containing no more carbon than average wrought iron, and other steel containing nearly or quite as much carbon as some cast iron. All of these various products of the crucible have retained, or received, the name cast steel, usually abbreviated to the simple word steel, without caus-ing any confusion among producers or consumers in regard to terms or their meaning. In 1865, twenty-one years ago, the Bessemer process was introduced ; this was followed in a few years by the Siemens-Martin process, and the products of both were at once, and have ever since been, called steel, from the fact that they were identical in chemical and physical properties with crucible cast steel. At the present time, then, we have three subdivisions of cast steel, viz.: Crucible cast steel, Bessemer cast steel, and Siemens-Martin,
