Thin seam coal mining in the western US nominally equates to recovery of stray seams associated with thicker, major seams. The thin or stray seams encountered are generally recovered, but not in all cases. The alternative to extraction is, of course, spoiling. The majority of thin seams are encountered somewhere in the overburden above the major seam or in the parting between thick seams. Although some are true strays and appear anywhere in the geologic sequence, others might be classified as thin "rider" seams immediately above or below a thick seam and separated by some equally thin parting. For the purpose of this discussion, stray or thin seams are defined as those which are less than 1.2 m thick or represent less than 10% of the expected extractable coal. [Figure 1] is a graphic representation of typical thin, stray, or rider seams which actually appear in a western operation. Operationally, stray seams create irritating scheduling problems and require special handling techniques which do not always lead to efficient equipment utilization. Additionally, coal recovery from a thin seam is considerably less than the 95% usually recovered from thick seams. Higher recovery in thin seams leads to dilution problems, which depreciates Btu quality, and most western coals are not in a position to lose heating value. Thin western seams also undulate and pinch or swell more than thick seams, and this leads to more difficult recovery. Often they are associated with equally dark carbonaceous shales and visual selectivity is difficult at best during daylight hours. Resource Recovery Regulations Thin seam recovery in western mines is encouraged by both federal and state regulations and by the mining industry's concern for total resource recovery. [Table 1] lists the western coal states and their recovery regulations. The federal regulations are found in the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. They state, "General performance standards shall . . . require the operation as a minimum to … conduct the surface coal mining operations so as to maximize the utilization and conservation of the solid fuel resource being recovered." Economic stimulation for thin seam recovery appears to be marginal or at the least controversial. Scheduling and operational problems often outweigh the nebulous profits created by engineering analysis. The only alternative to extracting thin seams occurring above major production seams is to strip directly through them and lose the resource to the spoil pile. Although this is not palatable to environmental emotions or resource promoters, it is the most simple expedient to operations people.

IN many places throughout the Western mountain plateau regions of the United States coal beds in place have been burned over very extensive, areas, the fire evidently originating on the nakedly exposed outcrop of the coal bed and gradually burning its way into the bed for considerable distances under very heavy cover. . The surface evidences of the burned-out coal beds are seen in the calcined and discolored rocks overlying the places of the outcrop. The greater the mass of the burned coal the higher the results of its combustion can be seen in the overlying strata. I have noted many instances of this condition in the States of South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona. In the lignite fields of Dakota and Wyoming I noted stretches of level country many square miles in extent where the surface rocks were roasted and vitrified by the burning of a great bed of lignite lying nearly level and with a light cover; this is probably the most favorable natural condition for the burning out of a coal bed. The less the depth of the rock covering overlying the coal bed, the better the .chance for a continuous supply of air to the fire; but when the coal bed clips heavily into the ground, or even if level, if it, passes under a hill or mountain which gives the bed a heavy covering of strata, the fire has more chances of being extinguished from natural causes than in the first condition described. The distance which, a crop fire may extend into a coal field is very much influenced by the dip, the thickness of the coal bed, and the nature of the rock covering immediately overlying it.

ALTHOUGH many physical properties of superlat-tices have been studied intensively, relatively little attention has been paid to their mechanical properties until recently. Even for the well-known transformation in 0 brass, the effect of the transformation on plastic behavior has only lately been extensively investigated.''' A partial analysis of dislocation structure in superlattices has been given by cottrel13 and his theory agrees well with the experimental results on CU3AU.4,5 His analysis, however, is implicitly limited to low-temperature effects, since it does not include the behavior of dislocations at temperatures high enough for diffusion, and hence climb, to occur. The work of Herman and Brown2 on the creep of 0 brass indicates that important effects occur under such conditions, and consequently, the theory should be extended to include them. Such high-temperature effects cannot be observed in Cu3Au, since it disorders below the temperature at which diffusion occurs at a reasonable rate. There are materials of the same structure, however, such as Ni3A1, which retain their order up to, or close to, the melting point. GEOMETRY OF THE COMMON SUPERLATTICES The two best-known ordered structures are the 0 brass type, B2, shown in Fig. 1, and the Cu3Au type, Ll2, shown in Fig. 2. In the B2 structure the (000) and (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) sites are different in that they are occupied by different types of atoms. The symmetry of the structure is then lowered from a body-centered cubic, A2, in which the sites are equivalent, with atoms located randomly in the sites, to simple cubic. This lowering of symmetry has the consequence that two types of regions may occur within a crystal: regions where A atoms are in the (0, 0, 0) sites, and regions where they are in (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) sites. The boundary between two such regions will contain bonds between like atoms, and be a surface of higher energy. These regions are known as antiphase domains and the boundary as antiphase boundary. In the B2 structure, boundary formed during the ordering process should disappear as a result of domain growth, since any domain growing to the boundary of two others will join one and engulf the other.' In any well annealed crystal, only a single domain should exist, with antiphase boundary present only in connection with dislocations, as discussed below. The L1, structure is related to the A1 (face-centered cubic) in much the same way as the B2 is to the A2. The face-center sites are occupied by A atoms, and the corner sites by B atoms. The symmetry is again lowered to simple cubic, and antiphase domains can exist. In this case, however, there are four initially equivalent sites in the unit cell: (0,0,0), (0, 1/2, 1/2), (1/2,0, 1/2) and (1/2, 1/2, 0). In the ordered structure any one may be occupied by a B atom and the other three by A atoms. Thus four types of antiphase domains can occur in this structure. This is sufficient to permit a metastable "foam structure" to exist within a crystal.''7 Antiphase boundaries along three different planes are shown in Figs. 3, 4, and 5.* *The presence of a layer of disordered material between antiphase domains, as suggested by Jones and Sykes8 does not seem likely. Such a layer would be a region of unnecessarily high energy which could readily be reduced by the formation of the type of boundary discussed here.__________________________________________________________ The notation (111) [110] means a boundary lying along a (111) plane between antiphase regions related by a 1/2 [I10] translation. It may be seen in Figs. 3 and 4 that an antiphase boundary usually results in incorrect nearest neighbors (shown connected by braces). The definitions of the terms commonly used in connection with metamorphism at elevated temperature near igneous contacts are re-examined. As the study of tactite zones associated with igneous contacts progresses, more and more emphasis is put on the localization of the ore by structural forms. The generally early age of the silicates and late age of the sulphides is well established. Postsilicate structural deformation is likely to localize ore bodies. The silicates are often replaced by the ore minerals. we may not be far from proving that the elements involved in the formation of silicate aureoles are merely normal "volcanic" emanations, that silica, lime, magnesia, and alumina, and probably soda and potash, are likely to undergo local transfers only. The work of Newhouse suggests the agents of the formation of sulphides in deposits of various classifications are the volcanic emanations. Introduction The purpose of this paper is to define the terms commonly used in connection with the subject, to briefly review and discuss the broad features of the aureoles, to indicate some of the features lately recognized: to discuss the genesis, and to suggest how the associated ore deposits can best be studied and developed. When developing a subject in mining geology one is soon conscious of the vast amount of pertinent literature and that most relevant ideas, no matter how obscure, have been considered. One can only hope to make some small contribution in point of view, a few confirmatory observations, or, perhaps, suggest a small new idea indebted to the most recent data. It is nearly impossible, also, to give specific credit, and adequate credit, to all the contributors to a given subject. This study, furthermore, was not intended to cover the field exhaustively, nor is the bibliography complete. Definition OF Terms There is much confusion in the use of the broad terms concerned. Needless to say, metamorphism means change of form; metasomatism, change of substance. The term contact metamorphism, however, has been widely misused possibly by a majority of economic geologists and engineers. As originally adopted by European investigators it meant changes effected largely by heat (thermal effects) in the rocks invaded by plutonic intrusives, but did not include those local changes usually at the immediate contact brought about by the addition of substance, i.e., by metasomatism. IRon-oRe deposits in the Philippine Islands became the subject of official record as early as 1664. Undoubtedly iron ore was known and recognized by the Filipinos long before the earliest Spanish records. It is even possible that the Filipino practice of smelting iron ore is, like the native copper smelting, older than the Spanish conquest of the islands. The first records have to do with the magnetite-hematite ores near the towns of Santa Inez and Bosoboso in Rizal Province, from 15 to 20 miles east of Manila. The magnetite-hematite ores of Bulacan were exploited in 1783. Similar ores near the town of Mambulao in Camarines Province yielded a number of specimens to be exhibited in Spain in 1834. With the exception, then, of the lateritic iron ores on the eastern coast of northern Surigao, the true nature of which was not recognized until 1914, the important iron-ore deposits of the Philippines had all been discovered before the islands came under the dominion of the United States. Indeed, in the Spanish documents relating to the history of iron mining are statements which, if their accuracy be not questioned, leave us in the Philippines today with much less iron ore than the Spaniards found. To quote, for example, a report submitted to the Superior Government in Spain in 1835 by one of its emissaries, Don Lorenzo Calvo: "The Philippine Islands, most excellent Sir, possess iron and exhibit it in nearly every known mineralogical combination, and in such abundance that the cordillera of the island of Luzon, from Montufar Point in San Bernardino Straits to Cape Bojeador, is composed of no other mineral than iron, its ranges, of the third order, being in content and structure totally iron of the best quality, the more valuable in that its combinations are such as to facilitate its fusion and to render its redaction to metal simple." Today, however, it is recognized that the iron-ore deposits in the Eastern Cordillera of Luzon constitute, not a continuous belt, but a series of widely separated deposits, including a half dozen orebodies within a distance of 10 miles in Bulacan Province, a single outcrop at Santa Inez, Rizal Province, farther south, and three deposits around

We know that if, to a quantity of mercury, gold and silver are added until a putty-like paste is formed, and if this mass is spread on a flat surface and pressure is applied, a more fluid portion of the mercury will be squeezed out from the rest, carrying gold and silver with it. The proportion of gold to silver will depend, I think, upon various causes and conditions—the relative chemical affinity which gold and silver have for mercury; the amount of pressure used; the presence of other metals:

KNOWLEDGE of the isothermal transformation behavior and the TTT chart method of graphically summarizing such information has been of invaluable aid to the ferrous metallurgist in understanding and developing heat treatments intended to provide specific mechanical properties. It is to be expected that similar lines of study directed to titanium-base alloys will be as profitable. This paper summarizes, on conventional TTT charts, the isothermal transformation products and pertinent reaction rate data for binary alloys of titanium containing 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 pct Mo, respectively. The results so presented were derived from metal-lographic examination. Some X-ray diffraction work was done to clarify certain points of question. Ti-Mo System To the authors' k.nowledge, TTT charts have only been used to describe the reaction rates of eutectoidal decompositions. It would seem that the kinetics of decomposition of any unstable solid solution might be conveniently described in this manner. The equilibrium diagram of the Ti-Mo system' is shown in Fig. 1. The similarity with the Fe-Ni system will be recognized. Additions of molybdenum serve to stabilize the /3 phase to increasingly lower temperatures. The solubility of molybdenum in the a phase is restricted to less than 1 pct at 600°C. Under normal conditions. a homogeneous ,8 structure quenched to a, temperature in the a f & field will reject a of invariant composition. The rate at which this occurs depends on the degree of undercooling and the degree of supersaturation of /3. The structural character of the rejected phase may also be expected to be related to the undercooling. Materials and Experimental Methods A sponge titanium was used which has a nominal impurity content as reported in Table I. The nominal composition of the molybdenum used is also included. The alloys were prepared in 150 g melts by arc melting in an evacuated water-cooled copper crucible of the type reported in an earlier paper.' The pancake-type ingots were forged to 1/4x1/4 in. bars and homogenized for 24 hr at 1000°C in evacuated Vycor bulbs. Specimens Vi in. thick were cut from these bars for heat treatment. The heat treatment cycles followed an invariant procedure. The specimens were soaked at 1000°C for 20 min under a helium protective atmosphere prior to quenching into a lead bath held at a temperature corresponding to a chosen degree of undercooling. After a prescribed period of time at this temperature, the specimen was removed and water quenched. A series of specimens so treated for progressively longer periods served to establish the times for initiation and completion of the decomposition of the /3 phase at a particular temperature. Although heat treatment of unprotected specimens in a lead bath does permit surface contamination by lead diffusion, this method is necessary to insure sufficiently rapid quenching rates. As long as the bath treatments were of less than 1 hr duration. the contaminated surface was not unduly deep and could be removed without excessive grinding. Metal-lographically, the contaminated zone could be readily distinguished from the pure binary alloy. Transformation Characteristics of Ti-Mo Alloys Metallographic examination showed that a supersaturated p phase may decompose by one of two processes. THE extension of metallurgical control of steelmaking processes has always made it desirable to have some quick method for determining the oxygen content of molten steel. To meet the practical demands of the steel industry, this method must also be simple enough so that the sampling can be done by the regular furnace crew. This requirement was kept in mind continually in the work to be described. An oxygen value is required for proper control, whether it be of a rimming steel or of a fully killed steel. However, two factors have discouraged the development of such direct methods: I. The reaction C + FeO -+ Fe + CO is rapid enough to make the correct sampling of the bath a difficult problem. The most generally accepted means of circumventing this difficulty have been the aluminum-killed bomb test of McCutcheon and Rautio1 and the aluminum-killed spoon test of Herty.2 The theory of these tests is that all of the oxygen in the iron is converted to A1203, which can then be determined by chemical methods. Even when simplified so that the analysis is made by a measurement of turbidity, this method is too slow to be used in routine control. Furthermore, the results obtained have never been entirely satisfactory, and some of the reasons for this will be discussed later in this paper. 2. The ordinary chemical methods of analysis for oxygen in steel are not reliable. The only analysis that seems to possess sufficient dependability to be of value is vacuum fusion,3 and the apparatus and technique developed for this have been too complex and slow for routine work. INDIRECT METHODS Indirect methods of estimating the oxygen have been resorted to in mill practice. Generally these depend upon the chemical equilibria involved. The oxygen in the bath is related to other components in the slag or metal that can be analyzed more readily. These methods have many difficulties in common. Steelmaking processes involve a complicated set of interrelated reactions, all of which tend to approach equilibrium at varying rates. The degree to which any particular equilibrium is approached, is not , well established. Moreover, a proper use of theoretical equilibrium constants requires a more extensive knowledge of the activities of the reactants than we now have. This is well illustrated by the irregularities observed when trying to determine the oxygen in the metal by its ratio to the iron oxide in the slag. Equilibrium relations may be used more readily if they are evaluated by plant experience, but the extent of approach to equilibrium remains an undetermined variable and lack of an entirely satisfactory means of determining oxygen for the calibration is felt keenly. For example, the statistical analysis of the relation between carbon and oxygen4 5 illustrates that even in a single plant wide variations exist under normal conditions of operation. Recent research work has shown that coal can be produced, at reasonable cost, from almost all coal-mining districts containing not more than 3 to 8 per cent. of ash. From coal so produced, an abundant supply of coke, suitable for blast-furnace operation, can be made containing from 12 down to 6 per cent. or less of ash. These statements apply broadly to the Appalachian coal belt, including most of the mining districts in Pennsylvania, Ohio, West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Alabama. The exceptions will generally be found among those coals carrying a prohibitive percentage of sulfur. Any gravimetric heavy fluid method of separation will effect a reduction in the percentage of sulfur, but this reduction may not be sufficient to produce, from coal unfit for metallurgic use, a product that can be so used. When a large part of the sulfur is in the form known as "organic sulfur, "or is present as very finely disseminated and homogeneously distributed pyrite, possibly it cannot be eliminated from the low-ash coal produced. When the sulfur exists as pyrite in distinct layers, bands, or nodules, or when it is finely disseminated but is irregularly distributed, often a low-ash coal low enough in sulfur to make good metallurgic coke can be produced from relatively impure coals. It has generally been assumed that the quality of coke on which blast furnaces must be operated depends on the geographic location of the furnace, and that the grade of coke on which a blast furnace must operate is that produced from the best coal obtainable by careful mining; or if the coal is prepared by washing, hand picking, or other means by which the foreign impurities are removed, that the grade of coke on which the furnace must operate depends on what has been termed the "inherent ash" of the particular coal. The term "inherent ash " is generally understood to mean the percentage of ash present after all removable (free) impurities, slate, fireclay, high-ash bony coal, and pyrite have been removed, and is usually applied to the percentage of ash present in run-of-mine coal from any mine after these impurities have been removed. Perfect washing, or perfect preparation, is understood to be attained when the percentage of ash in the washed coal is reduced to the percentage of inherent ash; that is, of ash that cannot be removed by the washing processes in common use. DETERMINATIONS of circulating load in a classifier operating in closed circuit with a grinding mill are usually made from screen analyses of the mill feed and classifier products. The percentage remaining on someone selected screen size must be used in the calculation, and, because of the wide variation in average particle size between the mill feed and classifier overflow, an accurate and representative result at the selected mesh is often difficult to obtain. To overcome this difficulty and reduce the time required in making the determination, I have devised a method which uses the liquid-solid relationship in the circuit rather than screen analyses. The quantities required for the calculation include only the usual dilution and feed tonnage measurements, which should be made regularly in the course of ordinary mill operation and, in addition, the amount of new water added to the classifier, or to the head of the mill with the new feed. If measurements are obtained on both of these quantities it is possible to check the calculated circulating load, and to calculate the percentage of moisture in the new feed to the mill; or, if the latter is known, to check the feed tonnage.

A correlation is presented for predicting the viscosity of gas-saturated crude oils under reservoir conditions. It is based on the dead oil viscosity and the solution GOR. The correlation was developed from a study which showed that at a fixed solution GOR, the relation between the gas-saturated oil viscosities and the correrponding dead oil viscosities is a straight line on logarithmic coordinates. Data from 457 crude oil samples from the major producing areas of the U. S., Canada and South America were used. The best straight lines through the data were fitted by the method of least squares with a digital computer. The correlation is presented in the form of an equation and also in a convenient gra-phical form. INTRODUCTION The viscosity of gas-saturated crude oils under reservoir conditions is an important physical property used in reservoir engineering calculations. Many difficulties are inherent in the sampling of gas-saturated oils and in the laboratory measurement of their viscosities. Therefore, it is frequently neither possible nor convenient to obtain measured values, so the viscosity must be estimated from other, more readily available data. This paper presents a correlation for predicting the viscosity of gas-saturated crude oils. The correlation is based on the amount of gas in solution and the viscosity of the dead oil at the temperature of interest. A previous correlation of these variables was presented by Beal. In comparison, the correlation presented here extends to a higher GOR and to a lower dead oil viscosity. Over the range of variables covered by both, this correlation is based on approximately 11 times as many oil samples. DEVELOPMENT OF CORRELATION A study was made of the variables or parameters which could be used to relate the viscosity of a gas-saturated oil to its dead oil viscosity. Preference was given to those variables which are easily and commonly measured in the field or in the laboratory. It was found that either the differential liquid formation volume factor or the solution GOR of the gas-saturated oil could be used as a correlating parameter. The solution GOR was se- lected for the correlation because of its simplicity and availability. In an attempt to refine the correlation by introducing a second parameter, the following additional variables were tested: differential liquid formation volume factor at the reservoir bubble point, the formation volume factor at the saturation pressure for the GOR of interest, reservoir temperature, viscosity of C+ fraction at 100°F and atmospheric pressure, weighted average gravity of gas in solution, oil gravity, reservoir bubble point pressure, saturation pressure at the selected GOR and reservoir temperature, and gas mol fraction. None of these improved the correlation to any significant extent. It was found that at any fixed solution GOR, the relation between the gas-saturated oil viscosities and the corresponding dead oil viscosities is a straight line on logarithmic coordinates, for the range of variables investigated. This straight-line relationship was used for the correlation. Viscosity data on a total of 457 crude oil samples were used. The data were obtained with rolling ball-type viscometers. The samples came from all of the important producing areas of the U. S., as well as from Canada and South America. Their geographical distribution is shown in Table 1. The ranges of properties represented by these samples are as follows: For each crude oil sample the viscosity of the liquid phase from each step of a differential liberation was plotted against its solution GOR on semi-logarithmic paper. The carbides of approximate composition and Mn have been studied using X-ray diffraction techniques. Those carbides of the type (Fe,Aln)zC ave isostructural with cementite. The cell pararmeters a and c have minimum values at approximately 10 at. pd substitution of manganese for iron; no satisfactory explanation has yet been found for this phenomenon. The carbide fFeMn4)C has a monoclinic unit cell whose dimensions are close to those of ,11,15Cz A neu-troip-dij~ractiot~ study of (F'eAlrz4)C~ reveals that, like MnsCZ, it is isostructural with Pd5Bz. The iron and manganese atoms occupy the palladium atom sites, while the carbon atoms were found to have the same atomic coordinates as the hovon atoms. A neutrorr-diffraction study of indicates that the carbon-atom positions are very close to those occupied in (Fez.,ll/lr~,.3)C. In both carbides studied, tlre iron and manganese atomzs were found to be essentially randomly distributed, although, in the case of (Fe,.811fn1.2)C, it is possible that there may be a slight preference of manganese atoms for- the general (d) positions and a corresponding slight preference of iron atoms for the special (c) positions. It has been found that a complete range of solid solution exists between Fe3C and Mn3C at 1050°C,I although Mn3C becomes unstable when the temperature is reduced to 95O0C,' and can only be retained by rapid quenching. It is also known that a complete range of solid solution exists from Fe5Cz to M~SC~,~ although the stability range of carbides of the type (Fe,Mn)sCz as a function of the relative proportions of iron and manganese is not known. X-ray examinations of Oh-man's carbide3 and Spiegeleisenkristall,~ which have the approximate compositions (Fe3.67Mnl.33)C2 and (Fe3-,Mn,)C, where x lies between 0.4 and 1, respectively, have been made. The following carbides have also been studied: ] The lattice parameters determined during these investigations are listed in Table I. It is seen that carbides of the type (Fe,Mn)sCz have a monoclinic unit cell while carbides of the type (Fe,Mn)3C have an orthorhombic unit cell. It is evident that the variation of lattice parameters with manganese content is not linear for carbides of the type (Fe,Mn)3C. The coordinates of the atoms in (Fe2.7Mno.3)C have recently been determined by single-crystal analysis., The fractional atomic coordinates have been shown by Fasiska and jeffrey to be in good agreement withj those deduced from an earlier analysis of Fe3C by Lipson and etch.' However, it was impossible to determine whether iron and manganese atoms occupied ordered positions because of the small difference between the atomic scattering factors of iron and manganese. The atomic positions in Mn5Cz (Refs. 8 and 9) and Fe5C2 (Refs. 7 and 8) have been obtained only by comparisons made with the isostructural compounds P~SB~.' Since X-ray diffraction techniques were used in these investigations, accurate positioning of the carbon atoms, which have a low atomic scattering factor, was difficult. No attempt has been made to determine the atomic positions in the other carbides previously studied. It was felt that an investigation of the lattice parameters of a number of intermediate carbides of the types (Fe,Mn)sCZ and (Fe,Mn)& would be of interest. It seemed likely that a neutron-diffract ion study of such carbides would indicate whether ordering occurred between the iron and manganese atoms because of the large difference between the neutron-scattering cross sections of iron and manganese. It also seemed probable that such an investigation would provide a determination of the atomic coordinates of the carbon atoms. I) EXPERIMENTAL DETAILS Specimens, each weighing approximately 20 g, were carefully prepared according to the following proportions: The components were 500-mesh powders of 99.995 pct purity iron and spectroscopically pure carbon and a 200-mesh powder of 99.995 pct purity manganese. The component powders were intimately mixed by prolonged shaking, then each specimen was inserted into a spot-welded cylindrical container of tantalum foil, whose end was closed but not sealed. Each specimen in its envelope was then sintered at 1050° C for 24 hr in a thin-walled evacuated quartz capsule, such a time having been previously found sufficient for equilibrium to be attained.' Each specimen was then quenched in order to attempt to retain the high-temperature phase, as the literature indicates that transformations may occur on cooling. Debye-Scherrer X-ray photographs were taken of each specimen using a 114.6-mm-diam camera, Fig. 1, patterns 2 to 6. The exposure time was 6 hr using filtered iron radiation at a tube voltage of 40 kv and a tube current of 12 ma.

MOST investigators are aware of the present unsatisfactory state of information concerning the fundamentals of crushing and grinding. Considerable scattered empirical data exist, which are useful for predicting machine performance and give, acceptable accuracy when the installations and materials compared are quite similar. However, there is no widely accepted unifying principle or theory that can explain satisfactorily the actual energy input necessary in commercial installations, or can greatly extend the range of empirical comparisons. Two mutually contradictory theories have long existed' in the literature, the Rittinger and Kick. They were derived from different viewpoints and logically lead to different results. The Rittinger theory is the older and more widely accepted. In its first form, as stated by P. R. Rittinger, it postulates that the useful work done in crushing and grinding is directly proportional to the new surface area produced and hence inversely proportional to the product diameter. In its second form it has been amplified and enlarged to include .the concept of surface energy; in this form it was precisely stated by A. M. Gaudin2 as follows: "The efficiency of a comminution operation is the ratio of the surface energy produced to the kinetic energy expended. According to the theory in its second form, measurements of the surface areas of the feed and product and determinations of the surface energy per unit of new surface area produced give the useful work accomplished. Computations using the best values of surface energy obtainable indicate that perhaps, 99 pct of the work input in crushing and grinding is wasted. However, no method of comminution has yet been devised which results in a reasonably high mechanical efficiency under this definition. Laboratory tests have been reported' that support the theory in its first form by indicating that the new surface produced in. different grinds is proportional to the work input. However, most of these tests employ an unnatural feed consisting either of screened particles of one sieve size or a scalped feed which has had the fines removed. In these cases the proportion of work" done on. the finer product particles is greatly increased and distorted beyond that to be expected with a normal feed containing the natural fines. Tests on pure crystallized quartz are likely to be misleading since it does not follow the regular breakage pattern of most materials but is relatively harder to grind at the finer sizes, as will be shown later. This theory appears to be indefensible mathematically, since work is the product of force multiplied by distance, and the distance factor (particle deformation before breakage) is ignored. The Kick theory' is based primarily upon the stress-strain diagram of cubes under compression, or the deformation factor. It states that the work required is proportional to the reduction in volume of the particles concerned. Where F represents the diameter of the feed particles and P is the diameter of the product particles, the reduction ratio Rr is F/P, and according to Kick the work input required for reduction to different sizes is proportional to log Rr/log 2.5 The Kick theory is mathematically more tenable than the Rittinger when cubes under compression are considered, but it obviously fails to assign a sufficient proportion of the total work in. reduction to the production of fine particles. According to the Rittinger theory as demonstrated by the theoretical breakage of cubes the new surface produced, and consequently the useful work input, is proportional to Rr-1.5 If a given reduction takes place in two or more stages, the overall reduction ratio is the product of the Rr values for each stage, and the sum of the work accomplished in all stages is proportional to the sum of each Rr-1 value multiplied by the relative surface area before each reduction stage. It appears that neither the Rittinger theory, which is concerned only with surface, nor the Kick theory, which is concerned only with volume, can be completely correct. Crushing and grinding are concerned both with surface and volume; the absorption of evenly applied stresses is proportional to the volume concerned, but breakage starts with a crack tip, usually on the surface, and the concentration of stresses on the surface motivates the formation of the crack tips. The evaluation of grinding results in terms of surface tons per kw-hr, based upon screen analysis, involves an assumption of the surface area of the subsieve product, which may cause important errors. The'evaluation in terms of kw-hr per net ton of 200 mesh produced often leads to erroneous results when grinds of appreciably different fineness are compared, since the amount of -200 mesh material produced varies with the size distribution characteristics of the feed. This paper is concerned primarily with the development, proof, and application of a new Third Theory, which should eliminate the objections to the two old theories and serve as a practical unifying principle for comminution in all size ranges. Both of the old theories have been remarkably barren of practical results when applied to actual crushing and grinding installations. The need for a new satisfactory theory is more acute than those not directly concerned, with crushing and grinding calculations can realize. Many problems associated with potential hazards in a proposed mining area may not be adequately appraised because of the complexity of trying to evaluate them in terms of production requirements. Frequently, encountered hazards have to be dealt with by day-to-day operational schemes that require the miner to either force a way through them or avoid them by blocking off the area in which the hazards are known to exist. These considerations, after the mine is in full production, can be costly to the mine operator and can increase the danger to the miners. A hazard-evasion computer program for mine planning that will appraise proposed mine layouts on the basis of existing or potential hazards has therefore been developed. The program is intended for use during the planning phase of a mine, where it should assist the mining engineer in making decisions in mine design, With the output from this program, the mining engineer should be able either to corroborate his judgments made on the basis of mining experience or to find unanticipated solutions to design problems. The program tests hundreds of possible solutions to a mining layout, and by sorting out the 10 best (based on a criteria of minimum-abandoned-coal) limits the number of choices that need to be considered and appraised for applicability to a given mine scheme.

FOR discharging and diffusing the gases from the reverberatory furnaces and converters the Morenci Reduction Works has been provided with one of the largest reinforced concrete chimneys ever built. It is 612 ft. high from the bottom of the foundation to the cap at the top, and has a minimum diameter of 24 ft. inside the lining near the top and 38 ft. 10 in. at the bottom. Its estimated capacity, at the elevation of 4338 ft. above sea level, is about 1,000,000 cu.ft. of gas per minute at a temperature of 500° F. and an atmospheric temperature of 90°. Under these conditions the draft will be at least 3 in. of water at the flue inlet. The gases enter the chimney through a steel balloon flue 33 ft. high and 15 ft. wide, the bottom of which is 19 ft. above the ground.

The use of filling in mines is less common in the United States than it is in Europe, where in some places it is required by law. In most cases the filling is placed by hand, and the material used for this purpose is the waste from development and that sorted from the ore in the stopes. When these sources provide an insufficient supply, additional rock must be quarried on surface or mined underground, or some other material must be used. In different parts of the world sand, clay, gravel, culm, granulated slag, mill tailings, and even ashes, have been used as filling material in place of or in conjunction with rock. Of all the materials used for filling the best is probably clean sand. Gravel, finely crushed rock, granulated slag and coarse mill tailings are almost as good, and the methods used for placing and confining sand will apply equally well to any of these. The advantages of sand are its comparatively slight compressibility and the ease, economy and convenience with which it may be placed. On account of the voids, which necessarily occur in fills made of coarse waste, such fills will compress 10 to 25 per cent before they develop their full strength, whereas clean sand seldom compresses more than 5 per cent. Sand is especially desirable when practically complete filling is required, and sand derived from mill tailings, especially when not thoroughly cleaned, has been remarkably effective in sealing off and extinguishing mine fires. When natural sand is available on surface, or when it can be obtained from the mill tailings or tailings dump, the cost of using this material for fill will probably be considerably less than that of rock. In this paper it is not proposed to discuss all methods of filling, but to describe some of the methods used for placing sand fill and to make a brief comparison of their merits. Methods of Placing Sand Sand may be transported and placed underground by several methods, which may be classified as follows: 1. By Hand.—The sand, which must be comparatively dry, is taken down the shaft in cars on cages and is distributed to its destination in these cars, or it is dumped down raises and is drawn off and distributed by means of cars, wheelbarrows or scrapers.

Grinding costs are an important item in cement manufacture, and the cost of power is one of the large items in grinding costs. Even where power is of secondary importance, cost items dependent on mill capacity are influenced by the efficiency with which the mill uses power. Tube mills typify the grinding mills most generally used in cement plants, though other types are in use. Tube mills have been widely criticized as being extremely inefficient, and this feeling regarding them has led to many attempts to design more efficient grinding equipment. Other types may be an improvement over tube mills, but the improvement has certainly not been revolutionatry, at least as applied to clinker grinding. The very fact that there is doubt regarding the relative efficacy of various types of mills is an indication that an adequate basis for an analysis of performance is lacking. The development of methods of analyzing mill performance has been hampered by the lack of a suitable method for measuring the work actually done in pulverizing. There has been no acceptable standard to which mill performance might be compared. As a consequence, it was not known whether the margin of possible improvement in pulverizing operations was large or small. Even direct comparison of different types of mills was seldom possible because most plants had only one type of mill for each type of service. Comparisons between plants were difficult because of differences in the grinding characteristics of various clinkers. Some recent developments complete a chain of circumstances that place the cement industry in a particularly fortunate position for the study of its clinker-pulverizing operations. Modern investigators of grinding phenomena have generally agreed that the best measure of mill performance is the production of new surface. For most materials this measure of performance is largely theoretical and has a rather remote connection with the practical aims of the grinding operation. In clinker grinding, on the other hand, surface area is intimately connected with the properties conferred on the cement by grinding.
