INTRODUCTION Virtually all countries have general legislation covering most aspects of mining and mineral processing, including investment and tax laws, safety and health regulation, and specific rules applying to exploration reporting procedures. Yet most developing countries negotiate individual agreements with foreign investors for major mineral projects, in particular when all or part of the expected output is exported. Such agreements are known under several different names, as for example concession agreement; technical assistance agreement or service contract; management agreement; production sharing contract; joint venture; or contract of work. The objectives and conditions governing such contracts are as diverse as these titles are. While a mining project is only one among a large mumber of similar undertakings in industrial countries, in most developing countries such projects usually have a dominating position within the country's economy. The general legislation is often inadequate and insufficiently detailed to cover all aspects of large projects with extensive foreign inputs and international markets. Therefore, the need for specific arrangements. Specific arrangements may also become necessary due to the complexity of markets for mineral products, the large number of participants - equity partners, suppliers, financial institutions, buyers, etc. - or economic and political conditions in the host country and fiscal regulations in the home country of the investors. Most agreements are concluded between governments, or government agencies, in developing countries and private industry headquartered in developed market economies - Canada and the United States of America in North America, Western European countries, Japan, South Africa and Australia - or, in some instances, with state-owned firms in these countries. There are fewer agreements between developing countries and the centrally planned economy countries - Eastern Europe and the USSR - which cannot be considered here because of absence of adequate information. Agreements can be concluded at any of the different stages from exploration through closing of a mine. While most contracts are negotiated at the time when a potentially viable ore body has been delineated and investigated sufficiently to anticipate a realistic time for commencement of production, other agreements start with "grass-roots" exploration, during operation of a mine, smelter or refinery or, exceptionally, after a temporary shutdown. While several major provisions are included in all types of agreements, others are covered in much more detail (or not at all) in some contracts reflecting the specific work programme of each project. While it is realized that subdivision and classification of complex contractual relations is necessarily arbitrary to a certain extent, such grouping is useful in practical terms, especially for the non-specialist. The following discussion, therefore, will start with a description of the major forms of contractual relation - concession, investment contract, joint venture, management agreement, service and production sharing contracts. Major issues covered in all, or almost all, agreements will then be dealt with. These include stages of development, corporate structure and control, fiscal arrangements, infrastructure development and environmental law, and dispute settlement and renegotiation. FORMS OF CONTRACT RELATIONS There has been marked change in the type of agreement entered into during the 1960s (and before) and the early 1970s and the period thereafter. While straight "concessions" - granting of exclusive rights to foreign investors over a certain deposit or areas with little restriction or well-defined obligations - were the rule during the first half of this century, more complex agreements have evolved since. Some of these cover every conceivable aspect, foreseen or only possible, and define rights and obligations of all partners to the last detail. Over the years, agreements have without doubt become more beneficial for the developing host countries, in part as a result of well-publicized nationalizations, as for example in Chile, and in part due to changed attitudes in all countries

The present known petroleum reserves are limited, and unless important new fields are discovered the Nation will be dependent, in the not too distant future, upon imports or upon synthetic liquid fuels to supplement domestic petroleum supplies. As a national defense measure, it would appear desirable to develop a substitute source of liquid fuels within the borders of the country if new discoveries of petroleum should Prove disappointing. Congress undoubtedly had this in mind when it passed the Synthetic Liquid Fuels Act (78th Congress, approved April 5, 1944). The act directed the Bureau of Mines to construct and operate demonstration plants for producing synthetic liquid fuels from coal and oil shale, and from forestry and agricultural products. As a part of this program, the Bureau of Mines has built a demonstration plant at Anvil Points, near Rifle, Colo., for retorting the oil shale, and has developed a mine to supply the plant with oil shale. At the beginning of mining operations, the physical qualities of the oil shale, which would have a bearing upon the selection of mining methods and practices for exploiting the deposits, were largely unknown. A comprehensive mining-research program has been set up to determine the best methods and practices to follow to obtain the lowest overall practicable mining cost for producing the oil shale on a large scale. Unusually low mining costs will be necessary for shale oil to be produced commercially. Consideration now is being given to exploiting a series of flat-lying beds 70 ft thick by a room-and-pillar method of three benches with the advance heading at the top. This report is one of a series giving the results obtained in research on mining problems, The structure and physical qualities of the oil shale indicate that the 70-ft interval of the oil-shale measure can be safely mined in open stopes; studies indicate that this method would be the most economical one to use.' As labor will be a major item of expense, the largest equipment that could be operated efficiently in the workings would be required to obtain the lowest practicable mining Cost. It Was therefore desirable to know the maximum safe span of unsupported rooms and the size of pillars necessary to support the overburden. This paper describes the work done at the Columbia School of Mines Barodynamic Laboratory in determining the maximum safe unsupported roof spans and the minimum safe pillar dimensions for the oil-shale mine at Rifle, Colo.

The processes involved in turning a set of seismograph records into a geological structure map may be divided into three classes; (1) picking reflections on the records, to be used for the computations; (2) determining the basis on which the computations should be made in order to arrive at correct results; (3) making the necessary computations and plotting sections and maps. The first is usually done by the crew chief, or at least checked by him. The computing system usually originates in the head office, occasional consultations with the party chief providing modifications as necessary to meet special conditions. The computations and plotting are done by the party computer, with possibly one or two assistants if the calculations require much time. Picking the Rejleclions Marking of the reflections on the records is perhaps the most important step and the one most likely to determine the reliability of the final results. Making the "picks" is important because most of the problems that come up in practical work are connected with the problem of what can be done with poor records. The lack of any definite criteria by which to judge what are good and usable reflections is at the bottom of the difficulty. Give the same set of records to several people to mark and they will probably come out with a variation in the number of reflections per record that are deemed usable. With good records the correct picks are obvious to all, but with poor records experience seems to be the only reliable guide as to what picks are reliable and what are merely born of imagination and desperation. Experience in marking records and seeing how the structures eventually check out is more important than training in physics or geology. Different types of equipment and shooting methods may produce records quite different in appearance, from the same territory, and the computer can do his best work with records of a type on which he has had considerable experience, and has learned the limitations and shortcomings as well as the virtues of the data with which he is working. Reflections may be picked for dips only, in which case the particular reflection picked is not recognizable with certainty on records from any other spread. The need for instruments to measure the movement of fluids and gas in wells has been recognized by engineers for many years. Information regarding flow in the producing interval has a direct bearing on completion practices in new wells and also provides information on the production characteristics of the well. Many hours of engineering time are spent in planning and completing wells but knowledge as to whether or not the original planning has produced the desired results has not always been complete. Many questions such as the following often arise: Why is it that two wells are completed under supposedly identical conditions, yet one well is a good one and the other is a poor one? Are the sands that look the best on the electric log contributing to the production? These and many other conditions in the producing well need to be under- stood in order to develop more efficient production practices and to improve on methods of completing new wells. It is the purpose of this paper to briefly describe one type of instrument, outline the methods of running the equipment and show the results of surveys made under various conditions. With an understanding of the use of this type of survey its importance can be evaluated in relation to the problems encountered by the operator. DESCRIPTION OF INSTRUMENT The instrument is a velocity recorder employing a clock-controlled 16mm film for recording the rpm of an extremely sensitive rotor which is rotated by the flow of fluids or gas in a well. The helical-vaned rotor and shaft, weighing one-half of one ounce are an integral unit exposed to the well fluids and are the only moving parts not enclosed in the fluid-tight housing. No packing or fluid seal of these parts is necessary and the shaft is mounted top and bottom on special jeweled bearings. Fig. A is the lower part of the instrument showing rotor and shaft with the protecting housing sleeve removed. The rpm of the rotor is recorded on the moving film by a combination electrical and optical system. The record is a series of dashes on the film, each dash and space representing twenty (20) revolutions of the rotor. As the movement of the film is controlled by the clock the number of dashes and spaces in one minute of film travel represents the rpm of the rotor. The range of the instrument is from 0 to 2,500 rprn. The barrel or housing is 1-11/16 in. OD and seven feet long. Various types of expanding fluid traps are attached to the lower end of the instrument to direct the flow through the 1 in. orifice containing the rotor. In evaluating uncertainty, experiments are usually performed repeatedly and then conclusions are drawn from the distribution of results. With the advent of high-speed electronic computers, it is possible to perform experiments using mathematical models constructed to simulate complex experiments or operations. Statistical methods are then applied to the results of the simulated experiments. This procedure forms the busis of this paper. Demonstrated is the need for properly accounting for uncertainty in petroleum engineering problems. How uncertainty affects solutions is evaluated in three example illustrations. The method used to evaluate uncertainty in petroleum engineering studies is the Monte Carlo simulation procedure.'-" INTRODUCTION The solution to most technical problems may be derived from interrelationships among several quantities called variables or parameters. There may be only a few variables or several hundred. Interrelationships among parameters may be explicit or implicit, well established or only approximate. Some variables that fully or partially depend on the magnitude of others are called dependent variables. Input variables for most practical problems are not precisely known; there is usually an uncertainty in their value. The degree of uncertainty may vary from one variable to another. Variables that are known accurately are called determinates.' For instance, the gravity of crude obtained from a particular pool may be known precisely, and therefore is a determinate. The degree of precision with which a quantity can be determined increases as data describing the pool are accumulated during the development of the field and the producing life of the pool. The uncertainty of a parameter may result from difficulty in directly and accurately measuring the quantity. This is particularly true of the physical reservoir parameters which, at best, can only be sampled at various points, and which are subject to errors caused by presence of the borehole and borehole fluid or by changes that occur during the transfer of rock and its fluids to laboratory temperature and pressure conditions. Uncertainty may also result in attempting to predict future parameter values. This type of uncertainty is particularly evident in investment analyses involving future costs, prices, sales volumes and product demand. Uncertainty in the solution to investment problems is often called risk, and its study is called risk analysis.' Uncertainty also enters into biological and sociological analyses in which indeterminate factors are often important due to limited control of the experimental material. It is customary, in evaluating uncertainty, to perform repeated experiments and to draw conclusions from the distribution of the results of these experiments. With the advent of the high-speed electronic computer, it is possible to construct mathematical models which simulate complex experiments or operations and to perform the experiments repeatedly, utilizing the models. Statistical methods are then applied to the results of the simulated experiments This method forms the basis of the investigation reported here. PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTIONS FOR VARIABLES The uncertainty in the value of a variable may be indicated by a probabilistic description accomplished by expressing the quantity by a probability distribution. Many recognized probability distributions can be used to describe physical quantities. Recent studies used various types of distributions to describe core analysis data.',' However, for the examples in this paper, the uniform and triangular distributions are believed to reasonably approximate the data used (Fig. 1). The uniform distribution confines the variable between an upper and a lower limit. The variable may lie anywhere between the two limits. This distribution is used when no one range of values for a variable is more probable than any other, but information or intuitive reasoning indicates the variable will lie somewhere between the chosen limits. The triangular distribution is used for a variable when more data are available to indicate a central tendency of distribution. This allows postulating a "most likely" value to the distribution and upper and lower limits. In this case, as for the uniform distribution, the variable is not expected to assume a value less than the lower limit or greater than the upper limit. However, with improved quality of data it can be postulated that the variable will tend to assume a value close to the most likely value, and that there will be a decreasing probability for values away from the most likely value. The area under either of these probability distributions is equal to unity since it is assumed that there is a 100 percent probability that the variable will lie somewhere under the curve. An ordinate erected at any particular value of the variable divides the area under the curve into two parts: the area to the left of the ordinate represents the probability that the value of the variable will be equal to or less than the value of the variable at the position of the ordinate, and vice versa. The probability is zero that the variable will have any specific deterministic value. If two ordinates are drawn for any two values of the variable, the probability that the variables will have a value lying between these ordinates is equal to the area under the curve lying between the ordinates.

A RECENT demand for some form of panoramic display of an important railway line, showing its branches, connections, and terri tory controlled by it, revealed to the writer the advantages of' a topographical model or relief map fix this purpose. Hitherto, maps of this nature have been used chiefly for scientific and geographical purposes, and confined to a comparatively narrow field of service. They deserve to become more popular and to have their advantages better understood. Much has been written and accomplished in this direction by Prof. Lesley, Messrs. Harden, Moulten, de Mendonca Cortez, and others; but I believe their pub lished descriptions of the methods employed in the construction of these models are confined to those used by themselves. It is the writer's aim to present in condensed form these various methods, and some suggestions of practical value as to the most economical course of procedure, as well as to mention some of the uses that may be made of the results obtained Methods of Construction.—Many different materials have been prepared and used in the preparation of relief maps, such as metal, clay, plaster, gypsum, wax, putty, Card-board, papier-mache, wood, and compositions of varions kinds, with results more or less success ful : wood, however, in the writer's experience, has been found to be by far the most satisfactory, combining the advantages of stability, accuracy and ease of handling. The following is a brief description of several of the methods used in constructing topographical models : When clay, wax, putty, compositions or materials of a plastic nature are used, the operator carries his work up from its base by means of measurements or by the eye, manipulating and shaping the material as best he can, ac cording to such features of his subject as he wishes to delineate. This process requires remarkable skill, and given this, will probably fall short even then of an approximation to accuracy; lacking essential elements of detail nil over the work and exactness, particularly in position and elevation of the most important points in the territory mapped. When either of the above mentioned materials or compositions are used, metal or wooden pins are sometimes driven into the base or level datum plane of wood, the top of these pins giving the eleva-

ABOUT four years ago the writer proposed a revision of the correlation of the Huronian formations in Michigan, and noted the bearing of the question on the correlations of the Huronian rocks in Wisconsin and Minnesota.1 Dr. C. K. Leith opposed this revision and argued for the retention of the correlations of the United States Geological Survey, published in 1911,2 for which he and Dr. Van Hise were mainly responsible. As late as June, 1917, Harder and Johnson, following Leith, thought it "premature to change radically a correlation based on years of careful field work."3 The work of Wolff on the Mesabi and Cuyuna Ranges, of Hotchkiss on the Gogebic Range (unpublished), and of the writer and assistants on the Michigan ranges, together with data developed by exploratory and mining operations, has introduced so many pew facts not recognized in the scheme of the U. S. Geological Survey that the correlations of 1911 must be considered, in some important respects, obsolete. Indeed new data are accumulating so rapidly that any classification, which for the moment may seem best to explain the facts, is almost immediately modified or refined by further observations. The problem of Huronian correlations is difficult, but interesting and important. With the aid of fossils, stratigraphers of the post-Algonkian formations have been able to show that slight disconformities may separate strata of vastly different ages, and that within physically conformable strata may be concealed a hiatus of great magnitude. THE committee appointed to investigate the application of oxygenated air to the blast' furnace believes, after a careful study of the problem, that this enriched air will increase hearth temperature, tonnage, flexibility of operation, and quality of pig iron made, and that fuel consumption will be decreased. These improvements are supported by theoretical evidence; but a practical trial of the process is necessary to establish more definitely the magnitude of benefits realized. The commercial application, however, may profitably be preceded by a test on a smaller scale. A small furnace will, in general, respond to the enriched air in the same way as a commercial furnace and the magnitude of the benefits to be gained from varying additions of oxygen can be fairly well established at relatively little expense. A new experimental furnace, being built jointly by the Bureau of Mines and the University of Minnesota, at Minneapolis, will have a capacity of about 6 tons and will riot require more than 700 cu. ft. of natural air per minute. Its hearth is 36 in. in diameter and its height about 32 ft. Enough oxygen to enrich the blast to the extent recommended by the committee can be obtained from a small oxygen unit. It might even be cheaper to perform preliminary experiments with tanks of oxygen obtained from regular, dealers. A procedure in making the test that suggests itself is to start with operation on normal air; then to use blast, enriched in several steps. Systematic temperature measurements of the tuyeres, slag, and metal would reveal any changes in hearth temperature. When these changes become large enough, the burden may be gradually increased to just within the breaking point and the furnace brought back to normal, if possible, by the addition of oxygen. Such a test would show what might be expected in the way of a decrease in fuel consumption and the time taken to "straighten up" the furnace by means of oxygen. The new furnace at Minneapolis is so equipped that the furnace process can be observed from the stock line to the iron notch. We have been taking gas samples at various elevations in the furnace to study combustibility of the fuel and the reducing power of the gas. If either of these is affected by removing inert nitrogen, the change can easily be measured.

Ultrasonic-atlenuation changes due to the formation of free dislocations have been observed during tensile tests of magnesium and LiF single crystals and samples of polycrystalline Results on the LiF and samples are similar: A preyield attenzration increase is observed which, however, be-corlzes smaller as the magnitude of the drop in load al yielding increases. This indicates that the yield point observed in these materials is due to dislovation rather than dislocation unpinning and that the initial density ' free dislocations must be low if the yield point is to be sharp,. Tests on the magnesium ere conducted at both 27" and 200C. Magnesium has the unusual property that the yield drop is larger at the higher test temperature and is accomplished by a decrease in attenuation. The latter is due principally to the temprovary pinning of detained dislocations by highly solute atoms. After strain aging., a stress as low as 0.3 bur suffices to unpin dislocations; microstrain measuements of sufficient sensitivity should. reveal plastic flow at stress levels this low IN another paper,' we describe the technique of simultaneously observing ultrasonic-attenuation changes and plastic microstrain during deformation of spher-oidized carbon steels. Changes of ultrasonic attenuation indicate damping effects caused by the oscillation of long, freely moving dislocation segments. Simultaneous microstrain measurements are used to indicate total dislocation motion. The dislocation-damping observations are most useful in the study of the early stages of deformation where the dislocation density is low and the plastic strain is small and relatively difficult to measure. Particularly interesting results are found in materials which display sharp yield points. Observations of these phenomena are reported here for three materials: single-crystal LiF and magnesium, and poly crystalline molybdenum. EXPERIMENTS Dislocation-damping effects were observed by measuring changes in acoustic attenuation with the ultrasonic-pulse method. The end faces of each of the specimens were ground flat and parallel and a quartz 10 Mc per sec, x-cut transducer was attached to one face. The bonding agents used were: a) "Nonaq" stopcock grease with magnesium, b) beeswax with LiF, and c) salol with molybdenum. With the LiF, the best acoustic signals were obtained at 45 and 50 Mc per sec; all other measurements reported are at 10 MC per sec. The theory that maintaining a high back-pressure on the oil sand lowers the viscosity of the oil has been generally accepted. The theory has also been advanced that lower viscosity permits the oil to be moved through the sand to the well at an expenditure of less gas per barrel of oil than would otherwise be required. It seems reasonable to assume that production of oil at the minimum gas-oil ratio will result in a greater ultimate recovery of oil. During the past five years the writer has acquired data on thousands of tests made on wells to determine the best rate at which to produce them. In the majority of cases reduction in back-pressure did not definitely increase the gas-oil ratio. The information obtained from these tests has raised doubt in the mind of the writer as to the correctness of the theory that lowered viscosity results in lower gas-oil ratios and in higher ultimate recovery of oil. The reasons that explain the results obtained in these tests cannot yet be definitely stated, but the hypothesis is being tentatively assumed that there are other factors which outweigh the influence of viscosity. Energy in Gas Moves Oil to Well The general opinion is that in most cases it is the energy in the gas that moves the oil to the well. In wells flowing naturally it is also the energy in the gas that lifts the oil to the surface. In a flowing well, there are two very distinct operations: 1. Moving the oil through the sand to the well. 2. Lifting the oil to the surface. The more important function of the gas is that of moving the oil to the well. Means for lifting the oil can always be found once it has been delivered to the well. Chuquicamata is moving into a new cycle of productivity; she has begun to give up the sulphide copper which lies deep-seated beneath the oxide ore zones in large but yet unknown quantity. After forty years of production, Chuqui may be likened to a strapping youngster, with adolescence and maturity still ahead. Mining operations are being projected-not for decades -but for generations. Although there are still many years of open-pit mining ahead, planning of future underground mining has been started. The bottom of the orebody is still unknown, but enough work has been done to show that Chuqui is one of the largest known copper orebodies in the world. Until recently, only the oxide ores have been mined and these have been treated at the rate of 50,000 to 60,000 tons per day by leaching. Construction of the sulphide plant was timed to coincide with reduction in production of oxide ores. The new sulphide concentrator and smelter, designed in keeping with the magnitude of the orebody, will be brought on the production line at the rate of 30,000 tons per day. The capacity of the plant now planned can be expanded to treat 60,000 tons of sulphide ore. Little wonder that Chuqui is a name legendary in the remotest mining circles. But to those who have known her more intimately, and there is hardly a mining camp without a Chuqui graduate, she means much more. She is an orebody that has made engineers. Reposing at 10,000 ft on the western flank of the Andes in the arid northern reaches of Chile, water is scarce, common fuels absent, and volcanoes and earthquakes add drama and hazard. It is these natural difficulties which have created the fascination and challenge which have caused many engineers to devote their lives to unlocking this treasure house of nature.

Thin seam coal mining in the western US nominally equates to recovery of stray seams associated with thicker, major seams. The thin or stray seams encountered are generally recovered, but not in all cases. The alternative to extraction is, of course, spoiling. The majority of thin seams are encountered somewhere in the overburden above the major seam or in the parting between thick seams. Although some are true strays and appear anywhere in the geologic sequence, others might be classified as thin "rider" seams immediately above or below a thick seam and separated by some equally thin parting. For the purpose of this discussion, stray or thin seams are defined as those which are less than 1.2 m thick or represent less than 10% of the expected extractable coal. [Figure 1] is a graphic representation of typical thin, stray, or rider seams which actually appear in a western operation. Operationally, stray seams create irritating scheduling problems and require special handling techniques which do not always lead to efficient equipment utilization. Additionally, coal recovery from a thin seam is considerably less than the 95% usually recovered from thick seams. Higher recovery in thin seams leads to dilution problems, which depreciates Btu quality, and most western coals are not in a position to lose heating value. Thin western seams also undulate and pinch or swell more than thick seams, and this leads to more difficult recovery. Often they are associated with equally dark carbonaceous shales and visual selectivity is difficult at best during daylight hours. Resource Recovery Regulations Thin seam recovery in western mines is encouraged by both federal and state regulations and by the mining industry's concern for total resource recovery. [Table 1] lists the western coal states and their recovery regulations. The federal regulations are found in the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act of 1977. They state, "General performance standards shall . . . require the operation as a minimum to … conduct the surface coal mining operations so as to maximize the utilization and conservation of the solid fuel resource being recovered." Economic stimulation for thin seam recovery appears to be marginal or at the least controversial. Scheduling and operational problems often outweigh the nebulous profits created by engineering analysis. The only alternative to extracting thin seams occurring above major production seams is to strip directly through them and lose the resource to the spoil pile. Although this is not palatable to environmental emotions or resource promoters, it is the most simple expedient to operations people.

I therefore raise a question as to there being some difference in standards used by different manufacturers in regard to the dimensions of the shovels for similar sizes and styles, so it may be rather confusing to some of us when we attempt to use the table in this paper and classify the capacity of the shovels as given here with some that are on the market.

The Institute also has its student, junior and associate membership and its Woman's Auxiliary. Primarily, it is a technical society, devoting itself largely to the encouragement of progress within the industries it represents, and to the discussion and dissemination of facts regarding this progress to its membership. The wisdom of this policy is reflected by the prestige and position which the society has gained, not only .among its members but throughout the entire mining world.

(written discussion*).There is one feature of the fire-refining of electrolytic copper which I believe should be mentioned when the relation of oxygen content to the "pitch" or "set" of refined copper is under discussion; that is, the segregation of impurities. Variation of "pitch" or "set" is frequently noted in castings of different shapes, cast at the same time from the same furnace, though the oxygen content remains identical. For instance, it is possible to cast two wire-bars in the same shaped molds from the same ladleful of copper, the one 2 in. thick showing a good level set, the other, 4 in. thick, being overpoled. Also, when two bars are cast of the same weight and at the same time from the same furnace, one bar in a copper mold at the proper temperature, the other in a mold that has been allowed to get overheated, the bar in the hot mold will show

INTRODUCTION In the early 1960's research was begun in Sweden to improve the agglomeration of our domestic iron ore concentrates (5). Different agglomeration methods that were used in the building material industry were studied under the economic support from the Swedish Technical Council, the Swedish Board of Technical Development and by the Swedish industry. The research work was performed at the Division of Mineral Processing at the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. All known agglomeration methods were reviewed and the methods were developed to produce superior quality agglomerates (6). The term cold bonding (in contrast to sintering) was introduced to describe the induration operation in these processes and this has been accepted internationally. Even though we used it mostly for steam autoclaving methods, it has come to describe a class of processes that use binding methods by pore filling. Schumacher in Germany discovered around 1907 that a strong material can be produced by mixing slaked lime with fine ground quartz and subjecting to a steam atmosphere under pressure at about 185ºC. This started development of lime-sandstone building materials and later on, in Sweden, the light-weight concrete. Schumacher also used the same reaction for briquetting iron ore concentrates by adding silica and lime, and autoclaving. The product seems to have been accepted for blast furnace burden and the process was used on an industrial scale until the 1920's. The sintering method has a small melting phase as diffusion medium and in the steam-autoclaving method a small quantity of water condensate at about 200°C serves the same purpose. Thus the induration process by the hydrothermal hardening methods is similar to that of sintering or heat treatment.
