In a study1 of the action of amyl xan-thate on chalcocite in water suspension, it was found that if the xanthate is added in relatively large quantity the xanthate group can be accounted for in three forms: (1) as xanthate ion remaining in water, (2) as benzene-soluble cuprous xanthate on the chalcocite, (3) as a benzene-insoluble coating on the chalcocite. Reduction in the amount of xanthate added leads to disappearance of form I then of form 2. With minute quantities of added xanthate, substantially all the reagent is of the "unleachable" kind. Yet this unleach-able xanthate can be dissolved by pyridine to form a soluble cuprous xanthate complex, and it is sufficient in effectiveness to make chalcocite flotable even if insufficient in quantity to form a complete mono-molecular film on the mineral. In that study it was also found that chalcocite abstracts cuprous xanthate from benzene so1ution, in what may (or may not) be a case of molecular adsorption. It seemed desirable, therefore, to study further the "unleachable" xanthate on the chalcocite, and particularly to ascertain whether it is formed as a result of the benzene leach or is actually formed during the conditioning of chalcocite in aqueous xanthate solution. A 'splendid tool to make such studies has recently been perfected; that is, the use of radioactive spies or tracer atoms. With this tool, it was thought possible to answer the problem stated above, but, unfortunately, this did not prove to be true. Answer to the flotation question was clouded by the existence of rapid and selective diffusion of copper atoms in the solid mineral—a phenomenon that was totally unexpected yet remains interesting and perhaps important. Method of Radioactive Spies The method of radioactive spies is discussed in many places. Two convenient references are the article by Evans2 and the book by pollard and Davidson.3 The method was first developed by van Hevesy and paneth in 1013, when only natural radioactive isotopes were available. These isotopes are few in number, and so the method remained limited in scope. Recently the synthesis of over 350 active isotopes of all the known stable chemical elements4 has opened widely expanded possibilities for the method, A fundamental tenet of the method is that a radioactive atom and a nonradio-active atom are exactly alike until disintegration of the radioactive atom. Then, by its sudden death, the spy reveals its location. The relative abundance of spies at various locations makes it possible to ascertain the relative abundance of the corresponding nonradioactive atoms at the same times and locations. OUTSTANDING among the year's events in copper has been the reimposition of an import duty of 4r. per pound in this country which became effective June 21. In consequence of this action by Congress, the Ottawa Empire conference recommended a duty of 2d. per pound equivalent at normal rate of exchange to our 4c. duty, on all copper originating outside of the Empire. Lip to the middle of this year only Russia and Japan had a closed market; the import duty on copper in Russia is 30 per cent ad valoremm and in Japan about 2c. Russia's consumption has always been in excess of production and she has imported from 2(1,000 to 40,000 ton, of copper per annum. Japan, with a production of 6,000 to 7,000 tons per month, has absorbed, in normal times, its production, but during recent: sears has exported varyiug quantities in 1929. 2,200 ton-: in 1930, 2,700 tons, and in 1931. 3,600 ton-. Aside from the-e two countries, the international market has heretofore been free. It and when the British Empire duty become, effective the world's markets will be divided into four unit: 1. The Sierra Consolidated Mines Co., organized in 1909, owns, together with other holdings, practically all of the productive mineral area in the Ocampo district. Lying within this area are 15 mines, large and small, that hid previously been worked and appear to have yielded, since the discovery of the camp, about 100 years ago, bullion of a total value of over $50,000,000. The deepest mine, the Santa Juliana, had been worked to 1,100 ft. below the outcrop. The reopening of the mines involved, first, extensive and thorough development to open up the known ore shoots at greater depth and explore the ledges for additional shoots, and, second, a revision of existing equipment and methods, so as to increase output and reduce cost of production. This paper will give some account of the metallurgical treatment and a description of the new mill to be built at El Salto. The Ore The ore is practically all argentite, Ag2S, with some associated gold, and carried in a siliceous gangue. The typical ledge matter is an ande-sitic breccia cemented with quartz, or quartz stockwork in andesite.l The proportion by weight of silver to gold averages about 60 to 1. The silver sulphides occur ordinarily in rather fine. dissemination, sometimes not being easily discernible with the naked eye, even in ores of very good grade. The ledges also contain considerable pyrites, which as a rule is barren. "Bronce" is the local term applied to such barren pyrites, and "Pasta" to such as carries values.

THE power drag scrapers and the slackline cableway excavator have been called "long-range excavators." Broadly, their field of usefulness is restricted to work in which their long range of action permits them to operate economically, and which other, possibly more conventional, excavating units cannot do. Both of these machines dig or lift material and transport it to a remote dumping point. They combine these two functions in a single machine, nearly always in a single straight-line motion. [ ] The purpose of this paper is to examine the important features that distinguish the machines in this group from each other, as well as from other groups. The Machines The "power drag scraper" is a long-range excavating machine that employs a bottomless drag scraper operated back and forth between digging and dumping points by two haulage cables. The typical arrangement is that of Fig. 1. This is the "slusher" of the underground mine, as well as the "dragline scraper" of the sand and gravel industry, and other open-pit mining operations.

SEQUACHEE Valley includes portions of the counties of Marion, Sequachee, Bledsoe and Cumberland. It extends in a general direction parallel with the Great Valley of East Tennessee, some 75 miles northward from the Alabama state line. It is separated from the Valley of East Tennessee by a mountain arm about a dozen miles wide, known as Wallen's or Walden's Ridge. The genesis of the valley, geologically speaking, is simple. It is an erosion-valley along the axis of an anticlinal. The point of the wedge remains in a row of low "saw-tooth" hills, running up the center of the valley. These hills are of Lower Silurian age, and consist of Trenton limestone, covered and protected in some measure by chert. A simple and inexpensive clay imprint core orienting device has been developed by Dr. R. D. Call. It has a minimum of moving parts, is durable and easily used by drillers, and adds only 15 minutes to a core run. Conventional wire-line drilling and a drill hole inclined 30° to 60° from the horizontal plane are required. The device will not operate in a vertical hole. The orientor is an eccentrically weighted downhole device which can be constructed in a mine shop from an old inner core barrel and lead. Modeling clay is packed in the core lifter case, which is screwed on the downhole end of the orientor. A clay imprint of the bottom of the hole is taken after each coring run. This imprint is matched to the top of the succeeding core run, the drill core is pieced together, and a reference line representing the drill hole is scribed on each core. Fracture attitudes are measured relative to the reference line and the core axis. On recent drilling projects, tests for imprint reproducibility were conducted. The results of these tests show an average variation of f3" in location of the scribed reference line between imprints. Comparisons of surface mapping data with oriented core data are good. It is rare that the entire length of drill core in intensely fractured zones can be oriented because it is impossible to piece the core together. However, if a triple tube set-up is used, a modification in the scribing procedure can result in a good statistical sampling of the fracture population. Attitudes of major structures have been oriented with this technique.

Adsorption of potassium dodecyl xanthate from aqueous solutions on artificial and natural zinc sul-fides was studied by means of infrared absorption spectroscopy. The adsorption species and their stabilities varied depending upon the conditions of the surfaces of the zinc sulfides. Adsorption products were analyzed after they had been removed from the surface with pyridine. Zinc dodecyl xanthate was confirmed for surfaces covered with oxidized products while dodecyl alcohol and carbon disulfide were detected on purified or weakly oxidized surfaces. It is of great significance to study the adsorbed species of collectors on the surface of sulfide minerals with a view of increasing our understanding of the mechanism of flotation. Compared with other methods, infrared spectroscopy promises to be of particular value in determining the nature of the species adsorbed at the mineral/solution interface since it gives direct identification of the adsorption products; and, furthermore, it has an advantage over the electron diffraction technique which has been employed in similar problems in that infrared spectroscopy utilizes radiation of very low energy so that the probability of changing the unstable surface films during examination should be correspondingly decreased. Infrared spectroscopic studies concerned with sulfide mineral flotation have already been reported by several investigators on zinc sulfide-hexanthi01' and lead sulfide-xanthate2,3 systems. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the adsorption of potassium dodecyl xanthate (KDX) at the zinc sulfide-aqueous solution interface by means of infrared spectroscopy. Rarely is the pure zinc sulfide-xanthate system encountered in practical flotation since zinc sulfide is usually activated with small amounts of certain metallic ions, such as copper ion. However, investigation of the pure zinc sulfide-xanthate system appeared promising for studying the fundamental mechanism of the adsorption of xanthate on the sulfide minerals. Although there are few cases where xanthates having an alkyl radical higher than hexyl are employed in practical operations, KDX was used in this study since it was reported that the adsorbability of xanthate on zinc sulfide was increased with an increasing number of carbon atoms of the alkyl radicals.4 EXPERIMENTAL Samples: Experiments were made on artificial zinc sulfide and natural sphalerite. The artificial zinc sulfide was obtained commercially from Dainihon Toryo Co. as a fluorescent pigment of the purest grade A. Considering the fact that there are often cases where the surface of sulfide minerals are apt to be oxidized so that the adsorption of xanthate at sulfide mineral/solution interfaces may be substantially affected, two different procedures were employed in preparing the samples of the artificial zinc sulfide. 1) The zinc sulfide was washed with hot concentrated ammonium chloride solution (300 g per liter) to remove surface oxidation products and followed by washing with deoxygenated hot distilled water by centrifugation until the constant electric conductivity of the solution was reached (Sample I) (specific conductivity of the solution = 8.6 x l0-5 ohm-' cm-'). 2) Sample I in a suspension of 5% by weight was oxidized with a 1.5% aqueous hydrogen peroxide solution for about one hour, and then was washed with distilled water as mentioned in the preparation of Sample I (Sample 11) (specific conductivity of the solution = 1.0 x 10"4 ohm-' cm-'). Both Samples I and II were dried under vacuum and stored in a vacuum desiccator. The specific surface areas of the samples determined by the BET method using carbon dioxide gas were 19 x l04 cm2 per g for Sample I and 35 x l04 cm2 per g for Sample 11. In addition, a sample which was derived from Sample I was also prepared. In 40 ml of 3 x 10-2 M zinc sulfate solution was placed 2 g of Sample I for 2 hours, washed with distilled water by successive centrifugation until no sulfate ion could be detected and dried under vacuum (Sample 111). (communication to the Secretary ?).-Dr. Pogue's presentation of the facts concerning the emerald deposits is very clear and convincing, and the only addition that I can suggest is a summary of previous theories of origin. He makes it evident that the pegmatite theory is the only one capable of explaining the existing relations, but upon certain details there may be some difference of opinion. If I understand the term pneumatolytic, it does not imply that all the elements concerned in a given deposit were transported as gases, but rather that the crystallization of these elements into the various minerals was favored by the presence of certain gaseous substances, notably H20, C02 and HF. It is highly improbable that the oxides of glucinum, aluminum, chromium, and silicon, which enter into the composition of the mineral emerald could have been transported in the gaseous form. The same is true of the metallic constituents of the parisite and other associated minerals. The explanation suggested, that solutions separated into liquid and gaseous portions, the latter ascending and forming the emerald in the upper portions of the rock only, therefore, seems to me untenable. When two formations exist side by side and one, A, is mineralized while the other, B, is barren, the possible explanations may he classed as (1) chemical, and (2) physical. 1. Some chemical feature of A not found in B might have caused crystallization of certain minerals in the former, which did not appear in the latter. In the present instance both rocks appear to be so similar chemically that no such effect can be looked for. Pogue mentions carbon as a possible precipitating agent, but describes both formations as carbonaceous, so that the difference in the minerals of the two can not be thus explained.

CONSTANTAN is an alloy of copper and nickel that is extensively used, under a number of trade names, as a resistance wire with a low temperature coefficient of resistance, and one of the elements of base-metal thermocouples, iron usually being the other thermoelement, although for low-temperature work copper is also used. Before the war, constantan was imported, in common with many other technical necessities. Since it required considerable time to receive the constantan after it was ordered, fairly large stocks were kept on hand; but after the beginning of the war no more was imported acid the stocks of foreign material were exhausted about the same time that the steel and munition manufacturers began to need great quantities of it for thermocouples for the heat treatment of steel. To meet this demand, the International Nickel Co. began manufacturing constantan that met all the requirements of the users of resistance wire but did not give the same electromotive force against iron as the German material and consequently could not be used with instruments calibrated for a definite e.m.f.-temperature relation. It so happened that all the constantan made had an e.m.f. lower than that necessary to meet the specifications of the Leeds & Northrup Co. for whom this investigation was carried out. If some had been higher and some lower, good wire could have been obtained by a, process of selection, but as it was no wire at all could be procured. To remedy this situation, a thorough investigation was started with the close cooperation of the International Nickel Co. and the Electrical Alloys Co. The specifications to which the constantan had to conform were that it should give an e.m.f. of 47.40 millivolts. against pure iron at 1500° F. (816° C.) with the cold-junction temperature at 0° F., or a proportional e.m.f. at temperatures near 1500° F. The method of checking a wire was as follows: It was first welded to a piece of iron wire; Armco iron was found to be satisfactory but iron with greater than 0.1 per cent. carbon would give a lower e.m.f. against the same piece of constantan than pure

AT Dominion Steel & Coal Corp. it has long been recognized that continued mechanization of mine operations is necessary in the Pictou, Cumberland, and Sidney coal fields of Nova Scotia. The varied physical conditions in these fields call for special consideration of individual cases before planning is finalized. Because standard equipment cannot be procured which would operate successfully, many experiments have been necessary over the years to keep pace with the progress made in other countries. There are two mines, producing 2000 tpd, located in the Pictou coal field. The field is badly distorted and crossed by many faults. Seams are highly inclined and irregular and vary in thickness from 5 to 40 ft. Entries are difficult to maintain because of squeezing of the coal. ribs and movement of the roof and pavement. Output from the three operating mines in the Cumberland field is 3000 tpd. The field is highly inclined, inclination varying from 12° to 32°. Overlying beds consist of shales and massive sandstone lenses of extreme toughness and are responsible for bumps when the stresses are relieved by extraction. At greatest depth these are among the deepest coal workings in the world. Depth of cover ranges from 2300 to 4000 ft. This prohibits room-and-pillar working and necessitates longwall operation. Working of contiguous seams concurrently to maintain output increases the already difficult conditions. The Sydney field, with a frontage of about 30 miles, is the most important of the Nova Scotia coal fields. With the exception of one small area it is now wholly submarine. Output is approximately 21,000 tpd. Seams are 21/2 to 8 ft thick, and cover in the areas varies from 600 to 2300 ft, with an average of 1500 ft from sea bottom to the top of the seam. The seams dip in a seaward direction, pitches ranging from 6" to 4.0". The shoreline is the last place of entry to the seams and distance from the bank to the working faces is generally over 3½ miles, in some cases as much as 6½ miles. Ventilation is a problem and requires the construction of large permanent airways. Getting and Loading Coal: In 1925, in view of heavy pressures exerted by thickness of cover overlying the seams, roadways and pillars of the room-and-pillar system being worked began to break up and coal was lost. It was decided that a change in the method of extraction in areas with heavy cover was necessary, and experiments were made with many short walls and longwalls varying between 90 and 250 ft. Trial and error proved that the best operating length was between 400 and 500 ft, delivering all coal to the dip, with roadways to the face following a level course. The change-over was gradual, and the technique of roof control developed with the system, so that falls to the face are now very infrequent. An advantage of longwall mining is that it yields 95 pct extraction, especially important in coal seams of high quality or in seams where faults or disturbances restrict the workable areas. This percentage of extraction is based on the fact that the longwall advancing system takes development faces where pitch permits instead of driving headings and leaving roadway pillars. This system yields high tonnage during development and limits loss in extraction to duff left during operations. Accompanying disadvantages, on the other hand, are the heavy construction cost of main roadways and the necessity of driving all new flank face roadways through the gob. If the main roadways are driven through the solid, and large enough pillars are left on each side for protection against flank face weights, then the width of solid coal is approximately 1700 ft. This represents 10.6 pct of the coal available, or 89.4 pct extraction of the whole. These pillars, however, are of such size that they provide a useful pillar drawing area as a final operation of the mine. This paper is concerned with the physical phenomena in the fracture process of presplitting and only indirectly with the establishment of the optimum presplitting parameters. Its nature is therefore qualitative, rather than quantitative. Before examining the problem of presplitting, it is first necessary to study the phenomena which occur when an explosive charge is detonated in a borehole. To do this it is desirable to consider the action of the explosion wave separately from that of the expanding gases.l In the theoretical analysis such a separation poses no problems. Experimentally this was accomplished by use of an underwater-spark discharge to generate the stress wave and by pressurized oil to simulate the pressure of the explosion products. The main role of the wave is to generate a densely radially fractured zone around the borehole. The subsequent gas pressure, exerted against the walls of a highly (radially) fractured cavity, generates a quasi-static stress field (henceforth referred to as static stress field). This stress field was found to be the same as that of a pressurized cylindrical "equivalent cavity" with a radius equal to that of the crack tips. Under these conditions the quasi-static stresses become appreciable and cause further extension of the radial cracks. It was further found that, under gas pressure, the longest of the radial cracks would extend first, and extension of two diametrically opposed radial cracks requires the least pressure. From these observations concerning the single shot the transition to a whole series of more or less simultaneous shots, as in presplitting, can readily be made. In the case of multiple shots, as in presplitting, exactly the same effects occur, but at numerous locations and sufficiently close in time that they interfere with

ORIGINALLY, mining machines were actuated by purely mechanical mechanisms comprising cams, levers and gear trains, which became more and more complex as demands were made for additional operations that would increase mine tonnage. To simplify these intricate machines, development engineers began utilizing the principles of high-pressure hydraulics long employed for the control of various machine tools. The resulting specificially developed hydraulic systems are now literally the heart of the mining machine. During World War No. 2, very little fundamental change in design was made in existing mining machines, but because of the recognition of the merits of hydraulic application to the machines of war, it is reasonably certain that hydraulics will be applied to mining machines in the future to a much greater extent. This potential future indicates that a more thorough knowledge of hydraulics and its maintenance must be incorporated in mine operation. Contamination of Oil Maintenance of high-pressure hydraulic equipment varies considerably with respect to mine practice and conditions. The success or failure is largely dependent upon the hydraulic fluid and its care. Since all successful hydraulic systems have been designed around the use of mineral oil as the fluid, a complete analysis of this prime factor should be made to make clear the requirements of the fluid in a hydraulic system. Contamination of Oil Manufacturers of mining machinery usually have specified an S.A.E. rating or viscosity index of the, proper mineral oil for use with their respective machines without considering the fact that many oils will meet these specifications but will not give the desired life or efficient operation. Hydraulic fluid should be specified as a good grade of mineral oil, such as turbine oil, having rust and oxidation resistance. It must have high chemical stability, high lubricity, and proper viscosity. These factors will minimize maintenance costs by reducing wear and the consequent replacement of parts, and at the same time will lower costs for the oil by extending its life. Bulk purchases of oil should be limited to small sealed containers provided with a proper pouring spout, thus reducing the possibility of contamination of the oil before it reaches the mining machine. The introduction of foreign matter, such as sand, water, coal dust and residue oil left in filling containers, will cause untold damage and maintenance expense. Sand, being one of the best natural abrasives, will soon wear the close tolerances of the various hydraulic mechanisms to an extent that will necessitate complete replacement. Water is considered normally insoluble in oil, but because of the churning action of a hydraulic system water is broken down to particles so small that they remain in suspension. It occurs naturally in its elemental form, as metallic sulfides, nonmetallic sulfates, and as combined or free sulfur in natural gas, crude oil, and coal. COMMERCIAL SOURCES Most of the sulfur that is consumed is converted into sulfuric acid before use; therefore, it is not necessary to recover sulfur solely in its elemental form. Processes for recovery are peculiar- to the types of reserves being processed. The major commercial processes as well as the general geographic locations where the appropriate reserves occur are listed in the following. It should be noted that the sulfur values may be recovered as the primary product, as a coproduct with other materials, or as a byproduct. Elemental Sulfur 1) Frasch mining is used for subterranean deposits of elemental sulfur around the Gulf Coast areas of the United States and Mexico. Generally, but not exclusively, such deposits are located in salt dome structure. 2) Autoclaving, flotation, or solvent extraction of surface deposits of elemental sulfur is practiced throughout the world. 3) Extraction and conversion of hydrogen sulfide from sour natural gas into elemental sulfur is done principally in Canada, France, and the United States. 4) Conversion of metallic sulfides from pyrites into elemental sulfur is done via the Outokumpu process in Finland. 5) Catalytic cracking and hydrocracking of sulfur-bearing crude oils to produce elemental sulfur is done worldwide. Desulfurization of refined petroleum products also yields elemental sulfur. 6) Recovery of elemental sulfur from sulfur-bearing oil sands (Athabasca tar sands) has been initiated in Canada. 7) As of this writing (1970), a plant has been constructed for the thermal decomposition of gypsum to produce elemental sulfur in the United States. Sulfuric Acid Sulfur values in the form of sulfuric acid are recovered via: 1) Recovery from smelter gases throughout the world. 2) Roasting of pyrites throughout the world with iron sinters as a byproduct. 3) Roasting of anhydrite with cement as a coproduct, primarily in Europe. 4) Processes currently are being developed for recovery of sulfuric acid from combustion gases resulting from the burning of high-sulfur-content fuel. Other Sulfur values also are recovered from waste products which normally occur in highly industrialized areas. Some examples are: coke-oven gases, sludge sulfuric acid, and pickling liquors (ferrous sulfate).

The problem of stability of slopes in reservoirs is one of real interest in civil engineering. The problem is whether the valley walls will remain stable or whether they are likely to slide as conditions are changed by storage of water in the reservoir. If major slides are indicated, as on the walls of relatively steep canyons, one must estimate whether they will be so located and of sufficient size as to interfere with operation of the reservoir-as by blocking the outlets, or by displacing sufficient water to over-top the dam in a huge wave. Some cases involve problems in soil mechanics for slides in earth or weaker rock; other locations need the assistance of rock mechanics for slides in harder rock. While this is not a new problem, attention has recently been focused on its importance by the hugh landslide into the Vaiont reservoir in 1963, which claimed the lives of over 2000 people and forced abandonment of the dam and powerhouse. VAIONT RESERVOIR SLIDE Fig. 1 shows Vaiont Dam in Italy which is a double curvature arch, 875 ft high, located on a tributary of the Piave River, north and west of Venice. When completed in 1960 it was the highest arch dam in the world. In 1960 a sizable landslide (some 700,000 cu yd) occurred on the left abutment a short distance above the dam. Following this, the reservoir was held down for construction of a by-pass tunnel through the right valley wall to insure connection with the upper end of the reservoir in event of further slides. In October 1963 a giant landslide occurred on the left valley wall, over a width of some 14 miles (see Fig. 2). Over 300 million cu yd slid into the reservoir, displacing the water and forming a hige wave 700 ft above the top of the dam as it hit the opposite, or right, wall of the valley. The wave then passed some 500 ft over top of the dam, followed down the tortuous winding canyon and debouched into the

THE work of Merica1 and other investigators indicates that the phenomenon of age-hardening in. alloys of the duralumin type is primarily dependent upon the variation in the solubility of copper with temperature. In addition to copper, however, these alloys contain small amounts of magnesium, silicon, manganese and iron, which may affect the age-hardening either directly or indirectly. The effect of these elements on the solubility of copper and on the manner in which this solubility varies with the temperature is of considerable interest, therefore. The effect of magnesium is of especial interest because apparently it exerts a marked effect on the natural or room-temperature aging of alloys of the type described.2 A series of investigations3 has been in progress in the research laboratories of the Aluminum.
