The flotation and adsorption behavior of ilmenite, monazite and zircon have been studied with sodium oleate as the collector and pH as the principal variable. The maxima in the flotation and adsorption properties of any of the above minerals fall within similar pH ranges. The bell shaped pH versus adsorption magnitude (r) curve is explained on the basis of collector concentration (Co and the concentration of hydroxyl ion (COH-) acting as the depressant. An equation of the type: 1 =KiCor~K2 Coh-/Coi-is proposed to account for the experimental data. The beach sand deposits along the sea coast in Southern India contain ilmenite, monazite, zircon, rutile and sillimanite as valuable minerals while quartz, garnet, shells and traces of hornblende form the gangue. A typical composition of the deposits is reported to be as follows:' Ilmenite 75%, Zircon 4-6%, Rutile 3-4%, Monazite 2 - 4%, Garnet 2 - 5% and the rest 8 -10%. Selective flotation of beach sand constituents has been reported by many workers.2-4 The fatty acid soaps have been invariably used as collectors. It is seen that all the valuable constituents of the beach sand are efficiently floated by soap collectors such as sodium oleate. In order to selectively float the beach sand constituents, it is necessary to use some depressants such as sodium silicate.3 The physicochemical parameters that govern the flotation of these minerals are yet to be studied in detail. In the present article, the findings on the parallel studies on the flotation and adsorption of the systems — ilmenite-sodium oleate, monazite-sodium oleate and zircon-sodium oleate — are being reported. In these correlative studies on adsorption and flotation of beach sand minerals, ilmenite (FeTiO3), monazite (Ce, Dy, Nd) PO4 and zircon (ZrSiO,) have been selected because they represent three important

Muskat's depletion performance equation is here derived considering the expansion behavior of the reservoir hydrocarbon system and a simple fractional-flow equation. This nietkod of derivation leads logically to the two extensions that follow. The first of these is concerned with gravity segregation in a depletion-drive reservoir. The second is concerned with including an empirically determined tern? for water influx in the performance equation. The more general equation for gravity segregation when there is a primary gas cap and empirically-determined water influx is stated for completeness. These equations have been found useful in reservoir performance calculations in Eastern Venezuela. A discussion on the methods of solving these equations follows, and considers firstly the effect of taking finite intervals in the numerical integration, and sec-ondly, methods of incorporating the time functions involved in segregation in with the expansion behavior. The paper concludes with a brief general discussion on further extensions to the depletion performance equation. INTRODUCTION The two fundamental sources of energy by which oil is produced from a reservoir result from pressure depletion inside the boundaries of the reservoir and fluid encroachment across the boundaries of the reservoir. The wells in either case form low pressure outlets through which oil and gas may be produced by the expansive force of the reservoir fluids and associated encroaching fluids. When the reservoir pressure is higher than the bubble-point pressure of the oil, so that there is no free gas in the reservoir, these expansive forces are the only ones available for the production of oil. However, when the reservoir pressure is less than the bubble-point pressure of the oil, free gas is vaporized as the pressure falls. With both oil and free-gas phases present, the additional forces of gravity and capillarity may operate on the gas-oil system, as they have previously operated on the oil-interstitial water system. Gravity tends to segregate the free gas from the oil due to their density difference. Capillarity opposes and eventually balances gravity as the more extreme free gas and oil saturations are reached, preventing the independent move- ment of free gas until it is above a certain saturation, and the independent movement of oil when it is below a certain saturation. The type of depletion performance equation chosen for predicting the future performance of a reservoir depends on the amount of past history available. When the reservoir is somewhere past the halfway mark in depletion, some form of decline curve is often used. With less past history, material balance equations which incorporate empirical factors based on the past performance are often used. When, however, the amount of past history is small, the Muskat depletion performance equation will usually be used. The distinguishing feature of this type of equation is that empirical factors based on the over-all or macroscopic reservoir behavior are almost or entirely absent. Each parameter affecting the reservoir performance is ascribed an independent set of values based on measurements made on laboratory samples; that is, incorporating microscopic empirical factors. In establishing Muskat-type depletion performance equations, it is necessary to consider the reservoir as consisting of a number of associated blocks, in each of which the saturations and pressures may be considered uniform, and in each of which all substances have uniform pressure-volume characteristics. Thus, a primary gas cap can usually be considered as one block and an aquifer as another. Gravity segregation may be negligible for practical purposes when the rock and oil properties are adverse and/or the dip or thickness of the reservoir is too small. In this case the whole oil leg may be considered as one block, except in very large reservoirs. In very large reservoirs the fluid and rock properties may vary enough, particularly in the dip direction, for it to be necessary to divide the oil leg into a number of blocks, in each of which the relevant quantities may be considered uniform. When gravity segregation of the oil and free gas is not negligible, it is necessary to consider the space occupied by the initial oil leg as divided into two blocks, a secondary gas cap and an effective oil leg, in each of which saturations may be considered to be uniform. The total volume of these two blocks is thus constant, but the secondary gas cap grows continuously at the expense of the oil leg. The following article covers the history of a metallurgical campaign, commenced in March, 1905, at the mines of the Socorro Bold Co., in the so-called desert region of Yuma county, Arizona. The results obtained were simply a function of necessity, as will be seen from the description of the local economic conditions and the character of the ores treated. The mines and mill of the Socorro Gold Co. are located near the small village of Harrisburg, about 60 miles from Congress Junction, Ariz., which, at the time this work was undertaken, was the nearest railroad station, and from which all supplies were brought by wagon through the desert, at a cost varying from $10 to $15 per ton in addition to the railroad freights. Wood, the only available fuel, cost $7 per cord. Water for all purposes was pumped to the plant from a well in the valley about 4 miles away. Under the Arizona law, a working-shift is 8 hr. Wages were $6 per day for foremen and mill-men, $4 per day for blacksmiths and engineers, $3.50 per day for miners, and $3 per day for shovelers and trammers. The ore consisted of quartz, in which, above the 250-ft. level, the iron-minerale were largely oxidized and some free gold was visible; below that level few traces of oxidation occurred, and pyrite constituted the principal mineralizer in the quartz, together with occasional pockets of galena and a few eccentric specks of covellite. The 20-stamp mill was equipped with plates for amalgamation, and three Standard tables for concentration. The tails from the tables mere elevated by a centrifugal pump to a launder, by which they were conveyed to a 60-ton cyanide-mill for further treatment. The cyanide-mill was erected at so great a distance from the stamp-mill that a separate crew of workers and a separate power-plant were necessary. Some attention should be given to definitions. The term "unit operation " may have at least two meanings. One meaning is the merging of titles and the development and operation of the unitized area, as if it were one tract of land held under a single oil and gas lease, according to a definite program intended to accomplish a maximum recovery from the pool as a whole at a minimum of cost. It is incomplete when the royalty owners do not also merge their titles to their oil and gas rights in the area, and is complete when they do. The other meaning is not accompanied by any merger of titles, but the development and operation of the area is in accordance, as nearly as reasonably practicable, with such a program. This second conception may be nothing more than a cooperative development and operation plan, but in this paper it is regarded as more than that. If there cannot be unit operation without a merger of titles, it would seem that the state cannot require unit operation, for it cannot require a merging of titles; but if it may consist in requiring each and all of the leaseholders to develop and operate or to submit to a development and operation according to some such common plan as is referred to above without at the same time requiring a merger of titles, it would seem that unit operation may be required by the state. Whether the states have this power is the subject to be herein considered. If the state can so bind the several lessees, it also can so bind the several lessors. The writer does not know what would be an ideal plan for the development and operation of a pool; but it takes into account the fact that the accumulation of gas and oil is not uniform throughout the formation; that often free gas, highly compressed, occupies the upper portions of the reservoir, the oil with compressed gas in solution coming next in order; that at places oil is not overlain by free gas, and sometimes there are peaks where free gas is not immediately underlain by any oil; and the fact that these substances are held under a uniformly distributed pressure, generally referred to as "rock pressure." It also recognizes that the most efficient utilization of this naturally existing reservoir pressure in the recovery of the oil requires that there be no operation of wells completed into areas where gas only has accumulated, for this diminishes the

A mass of circumstantial evidence is presented to indicate that the main source of alloy losses in open-hearth tapping is oxidation by air, with the steel apparently reacting with an amount of oxygen equivalent to about 30 times its own volume of air. The effect is erratic from heat to heat, depending largely on turbulence and distance of free fall of the stream of liquid metal. THIS paper reports another phase in a general study of oxidation in the open-hearth, various aspects of which have already been discussed in previous papers.1,2,3 It is based on experiments conducted on commercial, basic open-hearth furnaces at various times when opportunity offered, beginning about 1938, in an attempt to determine the mechanism and measure the amount of air oxidation during the flow of the tapping stream through the air into a ladle. This effect is closely connected, not only with alloy losses and control of chemical analysis, but possibly with various questions regarding inclusion content and steel quality and with a true picture of the deoxidation of steel in general. Thus it is believed that discussion of a large part of the results to date may be of assistance to others who are studying problems related to deoxidation or to steel cleanliness and quality. The literature reveals that strangely little attention has been devoted specifically to the effect of pouring steel through open air. Bardenheuer and Henke4 in 1939, in a paper devoted largely to overall losses of manganese in the basic open-hearth, reported that for a number of heats tapped into a tilted ladle held just beneath the runner so that the maximum distance of drop of the stream through the air was held to less than about 30 in., there was in most cases almost no loss of manganese from furnace to ladle. Hultgren,5 in 1945, showed that in high-carbon basic electric steel deoxidized in the furnace and containing no large inclusions as it left the furnace, large silicate inclusions, often rich in manganese oxide, were present in samples dipped from the pool in the ladle; also that the rise in content of large inclusions (above 0.01 mm dim) was greater when the metal stream was made to spray or flow in a turbulent manner. Our interest in this phase of oxidation in the open-hearth was first aroused by a study of alloy efficiencies on ladle additions. The frequency curves of manganese efficiency (net recovery of metal added in ladle) given in fig. 1 are of interest in this connection. Lowest, and also most variable (47 to 95 pct), recovery was in low-carbon heats having no coal additions to the ladle, progressing upward to a maximum average and least variable (82 to 97 pct) recovery in high-carbon heats killed with aluminum and silicon. Both coal additions and higher carbon contents in the tap stream, as well as additions of silicon and aluminum, help to lower the amount of manganese loss. But the most interesting point is the amount of manganese oxidized in many heats tapped at 0.50 to 1.06 pct carbon. It has been shown in a previous paper3 that the amount of oxygen in the tap stream in such heats is very small, usually below 0.01 pct, too small to oxidize any appreciable amount of manganese. Also, the fact that manganese should be oxidized at all in a metal solution containing such more stable oxide-forming elements as aluminum and silicon is an indication of some rather intense oxidizing effect such as could be caused by reaction with the air during ladle filling. THE precipitation of the nitride Fe4N from the solid solution of nitrogen in a Fe and of the phosphide Fe3P from the solid solution of phosphorus in a Fe both lead to the formation of structures that may be easily identified as Widmanstätten figures, within the meaning of the term as used in this series of papers. A complete solution has been obtained for the figure formed by Fe4N. The structure of Fe,P, however, is not fully known and a complete solution of this figure thus cannot be obtained; nevertheless, a study of this figure has furnished some new information. PRECIPITATION OF FE4N FROM ALPHA SOLID SOLUTION OF N IN ALPHA FE Constitution of System Iron-nitrogen A knowledge of the constitution of the whole of the Fe-N system is unnecessary for this work, though the recent studies by Eisenhut and Kaupp1 and by Lehrer2 have clarified most of the moot points; it is sufficient for our purpose to state that a Fe of high purity dissolves 0.42 per cent of nitrogen in solid solution at the eutectoid temperature, 591° C., and that this solubility decreases at first rapidly and then more slowly until at room temperature the solid solubility amounts to approximately 0.1 per cent nitrogen.3

The creep behavior of hot-rolled, hypoeutectic Zn-Ti alloys was investigated in the temperature range from 0.43 to 0.53 TM. Secondary flow was found to originate primarily from strain-induced gvain growth where grain boundary )nigvation served to relieve the strain energy of distortion introduced by slip, grain boundary sliding, and subgvain formation. The extent to which this recovery mechanism operated was determined by the ratio of grain width to the spacing between planar fibers of TiZn,, compound particles generated in these alloys during rolling. When this ratio was unity, creep resistance demonstrated a marked improvement. In this condition, which was fulfilled by annealing following rolling, structural stability was enhanced with decreasing grain size below the equicohesive temperature (-0.5Tm), while the reverse was true above this temperature. TITANIUM concentrations approaching the eutectic composition of 0.23 wt pctl have been shown to promote a significant increase in the creep resistance of rolled zinc,2 The alloying effect created with titanium is somewhat unique; a structure closely resembling that of a fiber-reinforced metal composite can be developed which selectively modifies creep strength in preference to other mechanical properties. In an earlier investigation,~ the present authors found that, while the fiber network, composed of individual TiZn,, compound particles, had a distinct influence on rolled texture, the crystallographic variations produced were of minor importance with respect to creep. Rather, creep resistance seemingly increased when the grain size appeared to coincide with the in-terfiber spacing. The work described here was undertaken to explore this effect in greater detail. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Three zinc-base alloys containing 0.05, 0.12, and 0.16 wt pct Ti were prepared from CP zinc and iodide titanium in the form of 4 by 2 by f in. chill-cast ingots. The melting and casting procedures for these alloys have been detailed el~ewhere.~ Individual ingots of each alloy were hot-rolled at 200°C (392°F) to total reductions of 10, 25, 50, 75, and 90 pct in from one to five passes, respectively, employing a 10-min reheat prior to each rolling pass. With grain, tensile-type creep specimens with a 1-in.-long, -in.-wide gage section were machined from the rolled strips for test purposes. Annealing studies to explore the influence of grain size on secondary creep flow were carried out at 400°C (752°F) in argon for times extending up to 60 min. The grain-size effect was evaluated in terms of average grain width and length values statistically derived from lineal intersection measurements.4 A similar method was applied in establishing the average interfiber spacing, i.e., average perpendicular distance between adjacent planar fibers. The creep characteristics of the alloys were investigated by means of constant-load and constant-stress creep tests. The former tests were conducted at 25°C (77°F) under an initial stress of 10,000 psi, while the latter were performed in the range from 25°C (77°F) to 90°C (194°F) at stress levels varying from 8000 to 22,000 psi. Total specimen strain, as determined with Budd HE-1161-B strain gages, was in excess of 0.10. Maintenance of constant stress was achieved through periodic load reductions made at 0.01 strain intervals to compensate for the attendant incremental reduction in specimen cross-sectional area. The maximum indicated error in the applied stress at these strain intervals was less than 3.0 pct. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Constant-Load Creep. In an effort to clarify the in-terrelation between interfiber spacing and grain size with respect to the creep resistance of the Zn-Ti alloys, their separate effects on secondary creep rate were determined as a function of titanium content and rolling reduction. These results are set forth in Figs. 1 and 2, respectively. The average grain diameter plotted in Fig. 2 was resolved from average grain width and length values. No data are presented for reductions of less than 50 pct because of the inability to obtain consistent measurements on these strips. The curves of Fig. 1 indicated that, for a given titanium content, a decrease in interfiber spacing, as produced with increasing reduction, promoted a decrease in creep rate. Depending on titanium content, however, wide variations in creep rate occurred at the same interfiber spacing suggesting that interfiber spacing, by itself, has little or no influence on creep resistance. Grain size, on the other hand, decreased progressively with both increasing rolling reduction and titanium content, the effect of which led to a pronounced decrease in creep rate, particularly when the average grain diameter became smaller than 3.0 x 10"4 in., Fig. 2. The continuity of this relationship tended to support the view that grain size rather than interfiber spacing was predominant in controlling secondary creep. Annealing Effect. The observed dependence of creep flow on grain size suggested that a further contribution to creep resistance would result when the alloys were annealed to effect a coincidence between grain width and interfiber spacing, see Fig. 3(b). ~eiides creating an immediate barrier to grain boundary movement, annealing offered the possibility of providing increased structural stability by eliminating many high-energy, mobile grain boundaries.= To test this hypothesis, specimens from the Zn-0.16 Ti strips reduced 75 and

INTRODUCTION Tochibora Mine belonged to Kamioka Mines, which are located in Gifu Prefecture, the cen- tral part of the Japanese main island, has occupied the important position as a main source of silver, lead and zinc for the smelter of Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd.. The annual production of crude ore goes up to about 1 mil- lion metric tons with average grades of 20g/t Ag. 0.31% Pb, and 4.18% Zn. For the last 20 years, the mine has struggled with the depressed zinc metal price in yen and the escalation of operating cost, especially la- bour cost. For instance, prices of commodities and labour cost have been raised 8 times and 14 times respectively during this period. On the other hand, total operating cost has been con- trolled to increase 4.5 times. The productivity of the mine has been increased 4 times by means of improvement of individual works and adoption of perfectly mechanized trackless mining system to reform the mining method. Some improvements are presented as follows; Today, drifting is carried out by the tunnelling crew which consists of 9 operators equipped with 5 Mobile-Jumbos, 2 LHD's and a jeep for carrying and loading ex- plosives. In order to get the high utilization of these machines, each crew manages systematically and continuously adjacent 15 faces under the direction of a forceman. As a result, we have accomplished high advance of drift. Furthermore, raising is carried out by a set of the raise-borer in case of long raises like ore- passes and also by the stage blasting method in case of short ones like slot-cuts. Generally speaking, the sublevel stoping method is considered to be one of the best methods for various respects; high productivity, low cost, easy grade control and safety. This method has been introduced in Tochibora Mine since 1950 and is now widely applied to lodes that could not be mined before by this method be- cause of the shapes of them and the conditions of their country rock. Now we are convinced to be nearly accomplished for our method. This report presents some examples of the standard sublevel stoping method and its variations which are practised at the mine. STANDARD SUBLEVEL STOPING Up to 1979 since 1950 when this method was first applied at the mine, 17 million tons of crude ore have been produced by this method, which amounted to 55% of the total production of the mine. During three decades, the productivity has been increased considerably by means of trackless mining system using large-sized machines and etc.. In other words, mining efficiency has been increased from 20 tons/man.shift to 100 tons/man.shift at large stopes. Formerly undercutting was carried out above the drawing drift by jack-legs and small scrapers and then several cone-shaped glory holes were made by stopers between the undercut level and the draw level. But now, a undercut drift is driven in parallel with the haulage drift at the same level of it. And at the undercut drift, drilling upward is carried out by a large-sized machines like the fan drill in order to extract the broken ore directly at the drawing drift connected with the haulage drift. Simplification of the work as well as utilization of large- sized machines enables to get higher productivity. But if the deposit is comparatively wider and the broken ore around the middle part of the deposit cannot be extracted, several drawing drifts are driven to the deposit and in order to minimize dead ore at the final stage of operation, the

During the past few years much interest and attention has been focused on a relatively new method of ore concentration, which utilizes the principles of sink and float and employs as the heavy medium a suspension in water of a finely ground solid, such as galena or ferrosilicon. Although a relatively recent development, much progress has already been made in applying heavy-media separation processes to a considerable number of ores. Eight plants in this country and abroad are now treating approximately 10 million tons of ore annually by heavy-media separation (sink-float) processes, including lead-zinc, lead, iron, garnet, tin and tungsten. At the annual meeting of the A.I.M.E. in 1941, three interesting papers (unpublished) dealing with heavy-media separation (sink-float) processes of ore concentration as practiced in four commercial units in the United States were presented by Victor Rakowsky, Grover Holt, Elmer Isern and Robert Ammon. These papers gave an excellent exposition of the principles of sink and float, as well as the operating practice in two iron-ore-beneficiation plants, the Harrison and the Merritt, of Butler Brothers, in Minnesota; the Central mill of the Eagle Picher Mining and Smelting Co.; and the Mascot mill, of the American Zinc, Lead and Smelting Co. Augmented by pictorial descriptions and a working model demonstrating the processes, these papers evoked a great deal of interest and discussion. In fact, in reporting the high lights of the meeting in the April 1941 issue of Mining and Metallurgy, Professor Taggart made the statement that " preconcentration by heavy suspension was Miss A.1.M.E 1941 so far as milling is concerned." Although to date the greatest application of heavy-media separation from the tonnage point of view has been for the treatment of lead, zinc and iron ores, these processes have a much wider field of usefulness. In this regard, it is to be noted that recently new heavy-media separation plants for treating cassiterite ore and garnet ore have been placed in successful operation. Moreover, numerous other types of ores have been found to respond well to these processes when tested on a semi-commercial scale, and it is expected that in the near future a considerable number of new plants will be erected. In view of the fact that heavy-media separation processes offer such attractive possibilities, particularly now, when the mining industry is being called on for an even larger production than ever before has been attempted, despite shortages of labor and supplies, it was felt that a description of some of the successful separations that have been worked out during the past year in the Ore Dressing Laboratory of the American Cyanamid Co. on a variety of ores of strategic importance would be of interest. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to present the essential data relating to investigations of heavy-

During the past 20 years the advantages of reinforced concrete as a substitute for timbering in so-called permanent mine openings have been fully recognized, and its use has become almost general practice in the larger mines. The term "permanent mine openings" is used advisedly and is assumed to embrace such openings as ventilation shafts, material shafts and main hoisting shafts, with their adjacent stations, ore pockets, etc. In the concreting of such openings, the actual cost as compared with that of timbering has been of secondary consideration, the support of large openings, elimination of fire hazards, and prevention of interruptions to production being the primary objectives. The ultimate economy, however, of lining such openings with concrete when they are to remain in use during the entire life of the mine, and especially when they are in bad ground, will seldom be questioned. During this 20-year period there have appeared in engineering publications a number of interesting articles on the use of concrete in mines, nearly always describing some specific project of major proportions, such as the concreting of ore pockets, large stations or main hoisting shafts. Such articles are unquestionably of interest, since the projects require considerable engineering thought, not only in the method of excavating large openings, but in their engineering design as well. Concreting of main hoisting shafts, particularly when this is done with the least possible interruption to production, provides some interesting problems. The concreting of haulage drifts of the dimensions commonly found in mines, on the other hand, soon develops into a routine operation, therefore it is with some hesitancy that the author attempts to prepare an article on this subject. The writer can recall only one article on the concreting of mine haulageways, although several articles have been written concerning the concreting of tunnels considerably larger in dimensions than those required in general mine practice.' From the scarcity of articles on the subject, it would seem that the concreting of haulage drifts is still far from being considered general

It is the purpose of this paper to describe in detail the laboratory development and mill application of an unusual combination of flotation reagents employed in the concentrator of the Climax Molybdenum Co., on the Continental Divide, near Leadville, Lake County, Colorado. This development originated in an ore-dressing research laboratory maintained by Climax at the experimental plant of the Colorado School of Mines, which is staffed by men directly employed by the Climax Molybdenum Co. Mill-scale testing of laboratory developments was supervised by a representative from the testing laboratory, working in close cooperation with the operating staff at the mill. General milling practice at Climax is ably described in a paper by E. J. Duggan,1 mill superintendent. Other aspects of the Climax project have been described in papers by W. J. Coulter,2 by Butler, Vanderwilt and Henderson,= by Allen Kissock,4 and by Leo H. Glanville.5 Consequently, this paper will be corfined to the metallurgical aspects of recent reagent developments, avoiding, as much as possible, repetition of material covered in these earlier publications. Brief History of Reagent Practice at Climax Prior to the year 1937, the only reagents employed at Climax for froth production and collecting action in the flotation of molybdenite were steam-distilled or destructively distilled pine oils. The only exceptions to this practice were brief periods of mill testing, when reagents of various types were tried on an experimental basis. None of these experimental runs was sufficiently encouraging to justify its continuation as regular practice. Sodium cyanide has been employed since the very early days of milling at Climax as an inhibiting agent for control of pyrite and chalcopyrite. Alkaline reagents such as lime or soda ash have been used in recent years to minimize the detrimental effect of iron salts on flotation of molybdenite. The presence of these harmful salts is attributed to the decomposition of fine metallics abraded from liners and balls in the first stage of regrinding rougher concentrate. Flint pebbles are used in subsequent regrinding, since alkaline reagents are not entirely adequate to offset the inhibiting effect of iron salts as the grind becomes progressively finer and the grade of concentrate progressively higher. Climax metallurgists were familiar at an early date with the use of petroleum products such as kerosene and gas oil as promoters of flotation of molybdenite. Charles C. Oliver6 discussed the use of pine oil and kerosene as early as 19-20, in connection with the milling practice at Dominion Molybdenite Co., Quebec. Nevertheless, the early attempts to apply this knowledge in the Climax concentrator were complete failures. Recrystallization of aluminum single crystals after plastic extension is carefully studied in relation to the structure of the deformed matrix. The shapes of the new grains are analyzed with regard to slip planes and to the presence or absence of deformation bands. A mechanism by which the orientations of the grains are related to the parent lattice is described. EXPERIMENTS previously reported&apos; have been extended to develop some of the characteristics of the new crystals which are formed on annealing axially strained crystals whose deformational characteristics had been documented with special care. Thus, the presence of deformation bands affects the growth contours of the crystals, some of the strained crystals produced single crystals anew, and some, polycrystals, on annealing, while others merely "recovered" or "polygonalized" after the 600°C annealing treatment generally adopted in these tests. In the matter of orientational relationships between new crystals and the strained matrix, the present experiments have added little to previous experience, which had demonstrated great variety in the range of orientations encountered and no simple theory or correlation. For example, there has been ample evidence for the predominance in various face-centered cubic metals of a favored orientational relationship; viz., a rotation of 30° to 40° around a <1ll> axis, between grains growing in a matrix with a strong single orientation texture and the matrix itself.&apos;-&apos; This reorientation has been interpreted by various investigators in support of both the "oriented nucleation" and the "oriented growth" hypothesis. In the case of axially extended single crystals of aluminum, no general relationship, such as the one stated above, can be used to correlate the orientations of the recrystallized grains with that of the original crystal. Thus, Carpenter and Elama and Burgers and Basart7 were content to assume that the orientational relationships so developed were random in nature. Mathewson, however, in the Campbell Lecture of 1943 "rgued on the basis of <112> slip that a complex strain, chiefly characterized by rotation around a variable axis in the slip plane combined with a principal rotation around the pole of the slip plane, could be responsible for such devious relationships. Nevertheless, owing to the limited data now available dealing with orientational relationships between new grains and the single crystals strained in tension from which they have recrystallized, no adequate examination of the above generalization could be made. Here, there is the disturbing preliminary condition that any desired orientational relationship may be expressed by means of two rotations about mutually perpendicular axes, so the process lacks a certain critical flavor and any successful choice of axes meeting certain theoretical requirements could be replaced by another differently selected pair. With this reservation clearly in mind the process of double rotations, as previously indicated, was used to relate the orientations of the single crystals which grew out of the strained single crystalline matrix and was construed as certain evidence in favor of the theory of incongruent shearing action proposed by Mathewsons as a necessary element in the (111) slip process with close-packed metals. Several aspects of the calcination of Michigan limestone were investigated: the rate of calcination of limestone spheres with diameters from 1.8 to 14 cm at temperatures from 800° to 1200°C by a thermogravimetric method; the temperature profile across limestone during calcination; the excess pressure developed in the interior of the stone during calcination; the pore surface area, pore volume, and effective gas diffusivity in burnt lime; and the microstructure of polished and fracture surfaces. It is found that, over a wide range of experimental conditions, the difference between the surface and center temperatures remains essentially unchanged during the latter half of calcination. From the rate of weight loss after about 50% calcination, the value 0.00126 cal per cm sec degree is found for the effective thermal conductivity of burnt lime. From the excess internal pressure measurements, i.e., 0.4 to 6 cm Hg at 800° to 1200°C, the permeability of burnt lime is estimated to be within the range 8 X 10-&apos; to 5 X 10&apos; sq cm. With increasing temperature and time of calcination, the pore structure of burnt lime coarsens as indicated by a decrease in the pore surface area, pore volume, and an increase in the average pore size. For the temperature range 600° to 835°C the ratio (effective gas diffusivity/molecular diffusivity) is about 0.18.

The Tri-State zinc and lead-mining district is in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, the southeast corner of Kansas and the southwest corner of Missouri. The area throughout which active mining has been conducted is about 45 miles long and about 5 miles wide, extending northeasterly from Commerce, Okla., to Alba, Missouri. Although the lead ores were mined on a very small scale in the vicinity of Joplin, Mo., as early as 1848, nothing of any importance was done in the district until 1870, since when both mining and smelting have been prosecuted with considerable vigor. In the beginning the lead ores only were exploited, but within a few years extensive deposits of zinc ores were found and since that time the production of zinc ore has far exceeded that of lead. Both the surface and mineral rights in Missouri and Kansas were under individual ownership by the time ore was discovered. Although some of these rights were purchased by mining companies, most of the mining has been done under leases covering small areas, usually 40 acres, although in the past many leases were given on much smaller tracts. In Oklahoma most of the mineral land had been alloted by the Government to various Indian tribes and although the title to some of these lands had been acquired by various white men before the discovery of the rich Picher field, the title to most of the land has remained with the Indian tribes and the leasing of the mineral rights has been done by the Federal Government for the benefit of the Indians. The Indian allotments were of 200 acres each and some of the mining leases covered entire allotments, although many leases were granted for only 40 acres or even less. Practically all of the leases granted in the past required the erection of a concentrating plant on each lease, a condition that has had a pronounced effect upon the mining and milling methods of the district, since the apparent ore reserves on each tract were too small to justify large and elaborate mining and milling plants.
