THIS paper describes experiments in which eight test samples of gelatin dynamite were fired in three different types of apparatus and the quantity and composition of the gaseous products of detonation determined. The special dynamites were so prepared that the oxygen balance of the samples varied from -35.0 to +6.0 g. per 100 g. of explosive, including the wrapper. By means of this graded series of explosives, the relation between oxygen balance and gaseous products of detonation could be studied explicitly. The effect of varying oxygen balance on explosive strength has-been discussed in another paper.1 The apparatus employed in the work described in the present paper included (1) the Bichel gage, a steel bomb of 15-1 volume; (2) the Crawshaw-Jones confined detonation apparatus, a steel cannon from which the explosive is fired into a pipe of 904 volume; and (3) the Hercules tank, an apparatus in which the explosive is confined in a quartz block which is placed in a steel tank of about 4500-1. volume. A full description of the apparatus is given later. VARIABLES AFFECTING COMPOSITION OF DETONATION PRODUCTS The character of the detonation products of commercial explosives is governed in part by the same factors that affect the combustion products from explosive mixtures of air with gases or vapors. In either case, combustible materials-namely, carbon, hydrogen, and sometimes sulfur-are present and combined variously. In an exploding gas mixture the combustibles are oxidized by oxygen in the admixed air, whereas with explosives the necessary oxygen is provided by oxygen-carrying materials in the explosive ingredients.

An experimental determination has been made of the efject of surface diffusion on the vapor pressure obtained in a Kwudsen cell. The results show that a knife-edge orifice in a molybdenum lid may give erroneous results for the vapor pressure of silver. when a correction suggested by winterbottom and Hirth is made, the results become meaningful. Experimental work with cylindrical orifices in molyhdenz~m lids and knife-edge orifices in ceramic lids shows that good vapor-pressure results may he obtained when the orifice is designed so that ejfusion is the only significant source of weight loss. THE Knudsen effusion cell technique has been used by many investigators to study relative and absolute vapor pressures over metals and alloys at elevated temperatures. As a result of this interest, some theoretical studies have been made of geometric factors affecting effusion from the orifice of a Knudsen cell. A review of these studies has been made by Margrave.1 Recently, Winterbottom and Hirth2 have suggested that a physical effect, that of condensation, surface diffusion, and re-evaporation, may seriously affect Knudsen cell measurements, especially when a knife-edge orifice is used. Inasmuch as many of the present vapor-pressure data have been obtained using knife-edge orifices. it was felt that an experimental evaluation of the effect of surface diffusion on Knudsen cell measurements would be of value both in the design of the cell orifice and in establishing realistic estimates of the limits of error for existing data. The experimental program was in two sections. Firstly, measurements of the vapor pressure of silver were made in cells with cylindrical and conical orifices in which the surface-diffusion contribution to the weight loss should be negligible. These results were correlated with existing data to give a reliable measure of the real vapor pressure of silver. Secondly, measurements made using knife-edge orifices were corrected using the surface-diffusion theory of Winterbottom and Hirth2 and were then compared to the real values. The experimental arrangement is shown in Fig. 1. The balance was an Ainsworth RV-AU-1 automatic recording microbalance capable of measuring weight changes of ±0.02 mg on a total load of up to 100 g. The temperature was measured by an optical pyrometer signted on the bottom of the suspended crucible. The temperature readings were calibrated in a separate experiment in which pyrometer measurements were made while at the same time thermocouple readings were taken of the temperature at the inside top and bottom of the crucible. The range of reproducibility with this technique was ±4°C. A constant voltage source maintained a temperature of ±2°C at 1200°C over 10 hr. Silver of 99.99 pct purity was used in nonporous alumina crucibles. Lids of molybdenum, tantalum, or magnesia were cemented to the crucible using a sodium silicate cement. THE Federal taxes on incomes and excess profits are of course heavy. In 1917, the value of the mineral production of the United States was a little in excess of $5,000,000,000. The total of Federal taxes for that year, for the mineral producing companies, as computed by themselves, amounts, according to tentative compilations, to about $207,000,000, and the total for the comprehensive group of mineral and metal indus-tries to about $766,000,000, which figures represent respectively 9.5 per cent. and 35.1 per cent. of the total tax paid by all corporations. Be-cause of greater complexities in applying the revenue laws to mineral properties than to most other industries, opportunity is afforded for wide differences of view. The western public domain acquired by the United States through trcaties, as the result of conquest or purchase, was invaded after Marshall's re-discovery of gold in California, by an overwhelming multitude of prospectors and miners from all parts of the world. he mineral lands of the whole Pacific slope were practically unsurveyed. Congress, disgusted with the experiment of leasing mineral lands, which it had tried for 40 years, and abandoned in 1847, enacted no laws for the management of these public mineral lands, and the pioneers made their own laws governing mining titles. These local regulations applied at first to gulch-mining in the auriferous river-beds only; and they constituted a simple and practical system. adapted to the needs and means of primitive communities—significantly called " camps." They had the means of measuring distances, but not angles; they knew no property except personal property in the form of pickaxes, pans, supplies, camp-equipage, horses or mules, and mining rights. The earliest codes which they developed expressed what might be called the law of the lariat. With the lariat they measured the distance assigned to each miner along the gold-bearing gulch—a double portion to the discoverer, and a single portion to his successors, in the order of their coming. With the lariat, they hung, after such due process of law as was available, the rascal who stole a horse, or a bag of gold-dust, or a mining claim, or killed another man without giving him fair notice and a chance to defend himself. In these pioneer codes, adopted in mass-meetings and enforced by the same authority, two features concern us most: 1. They measured mining property by one dimension only. So many feet of the gulch, held by one man, meant a distance into either bank, and a distance in depth, extending as far as gold might be found.

The construction of a model to associate probability of occurrence of some measure of mineral wealth with the geology for each subdivision (cell) of the area is postulated. The questions (1) are the observations made in reconnaissance geology sufficiently related to mineral wealth to distinguish the cells of high value from those of low value, and (2) can this geology be related mathematically to mineral wealth and probability are answered in a case study of 97,000 square miles in Arizona and New Mexico. Measurements on mineral wealth and geologic variables of 243 cells were made. The geologic variables, valued in counts, percentages and lengths, quantified the theoretical concepts of the model. It was found that multiple discriminant analysis and classification analysis by Bayesian statistics and multivariate normal probability function constitute a two-phase probability model that associates probabilities with geologic information and mineral wealth. The cells of explored area must be allotted the value class indicated by their cumulative production and estimate reserves (given well-defined geological relationships in a mineral wealth area), and a discriminant and classification analysis must be performed in which probabilities of the cell belonging to each of the value groups are generated as a function of the geologic variables. This determines whether high value cells can be distinguished from low value cells by their geology as well as indicating those cells misclassified by the model into a higher value group than warranted by their known mineral wealth. The second use of the model is for extrapolation. It is demonstrated how geologic information on an explored area can be utilized in guiding exploration in an unexplored area. Exploration decisions can be predicted on explicitly determined measures of uncertainty (the probabilities). SUMMARY This study postulates the construction of a model to associate probability of occurrence of some measure of mineral wealth with the geology for each subdivision (cell) of the area. Such a model will distinguish those cells deserving further exploration on the basis of their geology: The basic postulates of this study are as follows: v = Q(R,S,F,A) P(V) = G(R,S,F,A,V), where V = a measure of mineral wealth P(V) = the probability of occurrence of V R = age and type of rock F = rock fracturing A =age of igneous activity and contact relationships. There are really two questions to be answered: 1) are the observations made in reconnaissance geology sufficiently related to mineral wealth to distinguish the cells of high value from those of low value, and 2) can this geology be related mathematically to mineral wealth and probability? In order to answer these questions, an area of about 97,000 square miles situated chiefly in Arizona and New Mexico was selected as a case study. This case study area was divided into 243 cells, each 20 miles square, and measurements were made on mineral wealth and geologic variables. Crude geologic variables valued in counts, percentages and lengths are constructed to reflect the above postulated variables. These measurement variables thus provide quantified values defining the theoretical concepts of the model. It was found that multiple discriminant analysis and classification analysis by Bayesian statistics and the multivariate normal probability function constitute a two-phase probability model that associates probabilities with geologic information and mineral wealth. Given the availability of an area that is well explored and upon which the relationships of mineral wealth to geology can be adequately defined, there are two ways in which the analysis outlined in this paper can prove beneficial. First, the cells of the explored area must be allotted the value class indicated by their cumulative production and estimated reserves, and a discriminant and classification analysis must be performed in which probabilities of the cell belonging to each of the value groups are generated as a function of the geologic variables. The Pb-U system has been investigated by X-ray, thermal, and microscopic analyses. Two pyrophoric intermetallic compounds were found; UPb3 and UPb. The crystallographic structure of UPb3 is reported. A phase diagram was drawn for the system showing three eutectic and one syntectic reaction. AS a result of the interest in uranium metallurgy, the Pb-U system has been investigated. Practically no quantitative data appears in the literature concerning this system. Chips were machined from bars of high-purity uranium obtained from Ames Laboratory and the lead was 99.9 pct high-purity grade from Bel-mont Smelting & Refining Co. The chips were pickled in a dilute solution of nitric acid, washed in water and then alcohol, and dried prior to use for alloy preparation. The lead was simply sheared from the pig with no chemical treatment. Lead and uranium were placed in graphite crucibles and loaded into an induction furnace. In order to insure good alloy formation, the lead was loaded above the uranium to wash the uranium chips into the melt. After the charge was held at the desired preparation temperature for 15 to 30 min, it was allowed to cool in the crucible. The entire melting operation was accomplished in an atmosphere of helium (double charcoal refined grade with no further treatment). The procedure was to outgas the furnace by first evacuating it to 10-% m Hg, admitting helium to 8 psi gage and sealing the furnace off. An optical pyrometer focused on the charge through a hole in the crucible cover was employed for thermal measurements. Usually a 50° to 70°C correction had to be added to the instrument value. The most suitable alloy preparation temperature range was found between 1220° and 1280°C. The reason for this is explained by the phase diagram, Fig. 7. Above this temperature range two liquids separate preventing alloy formation upon cooling at a reasonable rate. On the other hand, below this range the uranium was coated with a layer of both compounds and the rate of reaction was diminished by diffusion processes. The fastest reaction rate occurred in this narrow range of temperature because only UPb coats the uranium and it evidently does not protect the uranium as well as UPb,. Apparatus and Procedures The development of apparatus and techniques was determined by the peculiar properties of the alloys. All the alloys were pyrophoric, and, consequently, the alloys had to be protected from oxidation by handling them in a dry box or inert atmosphere furnaces. Other operations performed outside of this equipment had to be done as quickly as possible. Thermal analyses were conducted in a furnace and arrangement similar to that described by the author.' Graphite crucibles having a thermocouple well in the bottom were used to contain the prepared alloy, while a helium atmosphere protected the melt from oxidation. The furnace was outgassed by pumping a 10-3 mm Hg vacuum until the furnace had been heated to 400°C. Then helium was admitted and the furnace sealed under 8 psi gage pressure. Chromel-alumel thermocouples were used for thermal analysis and the accuracy of thermal measurements was judged to be k 5°C. At first, an attempt was made to use platinum-platinum-rhodium thermocouples, but evidently lead vapors attack it at high temperatures forming low melting alloys. These lead vapors had direct access to the thermocouple because the graphite crucible was porous. A differential temperature control was used to regulate thermal analyses. The thermal gradient across an alundum tube placed between the windings and the crucible was maintained constant by a controller.

THE influence of environment on the mechanical properties of metals has been extensively studied and documented.' Most investigations have dealt with an interaction between a particular environment and a specific metal surface and the concomitant change in bulk mechanical behavior. Typical contributing media are oxide and metal film:;, electrolytes, and other surface-active agents. In the last category fall controlled gaseous environs (i.e., pressure or vacuum). Most vacuum exposure experiments prior to 1963 were conducted at pressures s>10-6 torr and elevated temperatures, or in such a manner as to prolong the exposure (e.g., by stress-rupture, creep, and fatigue). Little attention has been given to vacuum environment effects on the mechanical behavior of metals subjected to simple uniaxial deformation at room temperature. Test times and temperatures were assumed too ineffective as far as bulk changes were concerned. Further, the contribution of surface effects to the bulk mechanical behavior of metals was considered minimal. Under vacuums of the order of 1.0- 8torr and higher, molecular densities and, consequently, the rate of monolayer formation are such that exposures from seconds to days would be required for complete gas coverage. Thus, atomically clean surfaces created under ultra-high vacuum could conceivably maintain their cleanliness for time intervals orders of magnitude greater than at higher pressures. The influence of this unusual type of environmental surface phenomenon on the short-term bulk mechanical behavior of aluminum was first observed by Krame and Podlaseck in 1963.' kin equivalent effect was reported for magnesium by Williams and Nelson.3 It was concluded from these studies2,3 that vacuum and, consequently, the monolayer formation rate of the oxide, were responsible for the described changes in flow behavior. The presence of an oxide layer impedes dis- I) EXPERIMENTAL DATA: MOLYBDENUM The tensile behavior of molybdenum was investigated by the author4-6 at ambient temperature over a range of pressures from 760 to 10-10 torr. These studies revealed that the flow behavior of the bulk specimens (0.200 in. diam by 2 in. gage length) was independent of pressure on sintered (0.062 mm grain size) and arc-cast polycrystals (0.012 to 0.149 mm grain sizes) and single crystals. Since the specimens were relatively large in size, it was assumed that any flow behavior effect would be surface-limited because of the short-term deformation procedure. Strain-rate-change experiments performed to determine the activation volumes for individual specimens at 760 to 10- 10 torr further indicated that the surface flow contribution was either minimal or zero, contrary to the findings of Shen el a1.7 on aluminum. Although the flow behaviors did not change, specimen ductility did change. For the sintered material at a strain rate of 4.2 x 10-4, specimen ductility was -9 pct higher at l0- 10 torr than at atmospheric pressure (dry nitrogen). A more comprehensive investigations on this same material revealed a distinct pressure dependence, Fig. 1. Intermediate and atmospheric pressure tests were obtained by backfilling the system from l0- 10 torr with extra dry, prepurified nitrogen. Other environments (air and purified argon) were also utilized for the 760 torr experiments; the results were essentially the same as those for dry nitrogen atmospheres. Departure from the fracture strain values obtained at 760 torr takes place in the vicinity of l0-6 torr, as indicated by the scatter band; a noticeable ductility increase is apparent at l0-8 and 10-10 torr.

FORMAL theories of yielding and flow have been developed to describe thermally activated plastic flow in metal crystals.'-" hey are all based on Becker's' original idea that thermal fluctuations aid the applied stress in overcoming internal barriers to flow and lead to the following relation. where j is the strain rate; C is a constant which includes a frequency factor, the entropy, the number of flow units, and the amount of strain associated with each successful fluctuation; E(T) is the activation energy associated with flow, and is a decreasing function of the applied stress, 7; k is Boltzmann's constant; and T is the temperature in OK. The various theories differ mainly in the model chosen and in the nature of the relationship between the applied stress and the activation energy. Beckerl and Orowan' suggest a relationship of the form E a(Ti — t)2, where .ri represents the stress required for flow without the aid of thermal fluctuations; Kauzmann,3 Cottrel1,5 and Seeger6,7 suggest E a(t — t) ; Fisher8 suggests E while Cottrell and Bilby4 suggest a more complex relationship between E and 7. Additional data are needed to test these various theories., esweciallv- in view of Dorn's9 ork. which indicates that the activation energy for creep is independent of the stress and strain. The present paper presents the stress-strain data derived from incremental loading of magnesium single crystals in tension and direct shear, in the temperature range of 78" to 364°K. Incremental loading was employed in order that the creep component of the strain could be determined. Stress-strain curves of aluminum10-13 and copper" single crvstals. derived from incremental loading tests, have been found to be in agreement with those obtained by the more conventional constant strain rate or loading rate tests. Three aspects of magnetite smelting are discussed. The first is the working out of equilibrium conditions for eliminating sulfur. The second is the influence of magnetite solubility on the difficulty of tapping the reverb matte. The third is an approximation of the equilibrium conditions in the reverb gases which govern whether magnetite is mode or reduced in the reverb slag by these gases and by any iron sulfide in the slag. MAGNETITE has had a varied history in the Hurley Smelter since its start in 1939. Magnetite determinations on the smelter products are made regularly only on the monthly composite samples. Variations on the monthly averages are shown in Table I. Magnetite which drops from the slag and matte in the reverb has some slight bottom buildup which comes and goes, but no substantial accumulation from this source has been found at the end of a normal nine months' furnace campaign. However, there has been some low grade magnetite bearing material mixed with considerable A1,0,, which has slid down from the bottom of the sloping flue between the reverberatory furnace and the waste heat boilers. This accretion has required drilling and blasting near the skimming end of the furnace. The magnetite has interfered with tapping at times. When the smelter was first started, tapping trouble from magnetite was extremely severe. Increasing the reverberatory furnace temperature by putting in an air preheater and a Dutch oven has helped greatly, although there still is occasional tapping trouble. When the present series of physical chemistry articles on copper smelting started coming out in 1950, they were read with interest, but no immediate application was seen for them. Results of some laboratory work in 1952 aroused a much stronger interest in this physical chemistry. A series of melts was made on some converter slags, which had magnetite in very large grain sizes, with the object of reducing the grain sizes in the slag, as it was known that it was easier to handle in the reverb in that condition. Anything done in the tests greatly reduced the grain sizes—even in the controls, where nothing was done except melt the slag and cast it. There was more magnetite in the slags after the tests than before, and with wide variations. There were no obvious reasons lor much of what happened in these tests. Much of the base material published in English in this field was made available for study. Recalculations were made on many of the type problems, and part of the data was reduced to local temperatures and compositions. Explanations were found for what happened in the 1952 series of tests on converter slags, and the same principles turned out to be a description of much of what magnetite does in the reverb. This article is to present the results of that study, from the viewpoint of applying the technical material in definite numerical form to the operating conditions in both the converters and the reverberatory furnaces at the Hurley smelter. Magnetite Variations on Monthly Averages, 1939 to 1955 Pet Magnetite Lowest Highest Average Converter slag 13.6 43.3 25.4 Roverb slaa 2.7 20.9 8.7 Matte 28 15.9 98 In general it was found that magnetite is made or reduced in both the converters and the rever-beratory furnace, depending on variations of temperature, matte composition, and reverb gas composition occurring in ordinary plant operation. Within reasonable limits, the field conditions for formation or reduction can be predicted, and probably can be set up and maintained. Converter conditions affecting magnetite formation can be put into numerical values better than for the reverb from purely technical calculations. The converter can be operated so as to keep the magnetite in the slag down to between 12 and 14 pct and still give satisfactory life for the converter brick. This depends upon having converter flux available which will make a slag with a good separation without raising the temperature too high. In the Hurley reverb and others with similar conditions, it is likely that a compromise of conditions will give a reasonably good control of combustion and still keep the magnetite from building up on the bottom. This discussion consists of three main parts. The first is the working out of the equilibrium conditions in the converter for determining in which direction the reaction 3 Fe,,O, (s) + FeS (1) F? 10 FeO (1) + SO, will go under actual converter operating conditions. The second deals with the influence of the solubility of magnetite in the slag and matte in the reverb on the difficulty of tapping matte. (written discussion *).-Mr. Len-nox's paper is decidedly interesting in that he shows that a field exists for the Chilean mill, in which its efficiency compares favorably with that of more modern grinding devices. The figures he has given clearly indi-cate that a coarse feed is conducive to higher efficiency than the fine feeds which the Chilean mill has usually been called upon to grind. The fact is also apparently indicated that operating the Chilean mill in closed circuit with a mechanical classifier results in still higher efficiency, and that in such cases the percentage of returns should be kept below 100 per cent. to obtain best results. It would be interesting to see the results of further tests with what Mr. Lennox calls "Mixed Feed," since the data given in Table 4 seems to' point to the fact that a mixed feed,

The existence of fluid migration across fixed boundaries in oil and gas reservoirs has been known for many years. Several techniques have been developed in the past for estimating The rate of migration across fixed boundaries as an aid in planninng field development and in the valuation of oilfied properties. The principal de/errc7nt to the use of these techniques lies in the rather extensive reservoir and field data required for ca1cula1ion.s of fluid migration. For this reason, a new, simplified procedure has been developed which makes possible the calculation of fluid migration with a minimum of field and resrvoir data. This new technique is based on certain. solutions of the differential equations describing flour in the reservoir which assume, for the portion of the reservoir of interest, that the formation can be approximated by a homogeneous rock of uniforrn thickness, that only a Single mobile fluid phase exists, and {hut fluid production at the well is solely a result of expun.rioti of rile resersoir fluds. The results of the, present work are compiled in a set of curves. These curves can he used to calculate both rule and cummulative fluid migration when the abovc assumptions ore ju.r/ifiril. The only data required for such calcu1ations are the production hisrories of all wells in the field, the permeability and porosity of the reservoir., the, compressibility and viscosity of the fluid. and the shape of the reservoir, INTRODUCTION The migration of fluids across fixed boundaries in oil and gas reservoirs has long been recognized as an engineering and economic problem, but no methods for estimating the extent of migration during the development stage of a reservoir have been published. The investigation reported here has been directed toward providing a simple technique for estimating the extent of such migration and has therefore been restricted to the simple case of a homogeneous reservoir of uniform thickncss containing compressible liquids. It is assumed that only a single mobile fluid phase exists and that fluid production at the wells is solely by expansion of the reservoir fluids. Obviously, few, if any. reservoirs conform to these assumptions during their entire productive life. On the other hand, most reservoirs approximate fluid expansion reservoirs during their initial stages of primary production. Consequently, the present work should be applicable during the field development of most reservoirs, regardless of whether or not they ultimately are gas cap, dissolved-gas, or water-drive reservoirs. The mathematical analysis of this problem has been outlined in the Appendix, while the results of the investigation are presented in the following discussion. DISCUSSION OF CALCULATION PROCEDURE SLNGLE Well, Ini-iimite Reservoir The procedure for calculating fluid migrations is based on solutions of the partial differentia1 equations describing the flow of a homogeneous compressible liquid in a homogeneous reservoir of uniform thickness. This differential equation has the form of the well-known diffusion equation. The Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation has developed a hydrometallurgical process for recovering nickel from oxidized ores, including both the iron-rich laterites and magnesium-rich, soft silicates. Known as the HSO-HTCP (Hydrothermal Sulfidization Oxidation-High Temperature Cementation in Pulp) Process, the system consists of feed preparation, sulfidization, oxidation, precipitation (cementation), and calcination and melting. This paper deals primarily with the sulfidization and oxidation phases of the process. Nickel sulfide ores lend themselves readily to concentration before smelting or pressure leaching, but neither of the major oxidized ore types — the iron-rich laterites and magnesium-rich, soft silicates-has been directly concentrated. Upgrading of crude ore in current practice is limited to cobbing lumps of the harder, lower grade rock (protore) from the softer, enriched silicate ore, because only a small percentage of the nickel in these ores occurs in discrete, contrasting mineral particles. There is no apparent mineralogical contrast in the superficial, iron-rich lateritic ores and, in fact, there is no firm assurance that the nickel atoms are within the lattices of the limonite minerals, or else irregularly adsorbed on the limonite. Within underlying, "rotten rock" silicates, occasional veinlets of gamierite and related nickeliferous silicates are found.' The gamierite veinlets, however, are only incidental, and the majority of the nickel atoms occur as erratic replacements of magnesium atoms in the micaceous chlorites of the ore mass. Pyrometallurgical processes account for nearly all the nickel currently being recovered from oxidized ores. Plants in New Caledonia, Oregon, Japan, Brazil and Greece smelt the ores to make ferronickels or a sulfide matte,2 and the ammoniacal leaching3 at Nicaro, Cuba, is preceded by a reducing roasL4 The only fully hydrometallurgical installation has been the politically ill-fated Freeport Nickel Co. enterprise, and this process was limited to lateritic ores.5p6 A hydrometallurgical technique which might handle both laterite and the typically richer silicate ores has been an enticing goal. The technique described here was developed at the Colorado School of Mines Research Foundation, Inc. on behalf of the Republic Steel Corp. It uses sulfur, heat, air and metallic iron to recover nickel from these ores. Inasmuch as the ores are treated as aqueous slurries, the cost of drying a plant feed that normally carried 30% or more moisture is eliminated, and there are no dust problems. Patent applications have been filed by Republic Steel Corp. on the procedures used for getting the metal into solution and on the subsequent recovery without liquids-so l ids separation of the slurry. It is referred to as the HSO-HTCP Process (Hydrothermal Sulfidization Oxidation — High Temperature Cementation in Pulp). THE PROCESS FLOWSHEET The results of various experimental studies have been combined to form the continuous flowsheet illustrated in Fig. 1. This flowsheet serves as a general pattern showing the sequence of the operations which include: (1) feed preparation; (2) sulfidization; (3) oxidation; (4) precipitation (cementation); and (5) calcination and melting. This paper deals primarily with the sulfidization and oxidation phases of the process. Feed preparation: In general, the silicate ores can be considered as earthy rather than hard, and preparation might be carried out before the addition of water in a trommel, or with water in a scrubber or log washer. This breaks up the earthy particles, allowing the hard lumps to be separated by screening. The oversize material from most ores is relatively barren and may be discarded. If there is occasion to control the iron-magnesium ratio in the plant feed, laterite, which normally breaks up readily into fine sized particles, and silicates are mixed in suitable proportions. The fine product slurry from the initial steps is mixed with elemental sulfur and fed to a conventional ball mill, although the amount of actual grinding that takes place is relatively small. The object of milling is to complete the disintegration to natural particle size and to produce an intimate mixture of the ore and elemental sulfur. It is now generally recognized that diffusion data and theories are needed for multicomponent systems, where extensive practical developments and even some theoretical studies have already been made. For example, much recent work on precipitation from solid solution has been concerned with ternary solid solutions such as A-M-Z' while Zener relaxation has been studied on Au-Ag-Zn alloys,' although adequate diffusion data are available for neither of these systems. Actually, the only ternary systems for which systematic diffusion studies have been begun, in addi- tion to the one reported here, are CO-i-cr3 and Cu-A-Au. Since the theory of multicomponent diffusion is still in the stage of active development5 it is important to distinguish the various kinds of diffusion data that can be determined. An oversimplified approach, widely used prior to 1950, was to determine the influence of a third element, such as nickel, on the diffusion behavior of a binary alloy, such as CU-Z. Later it was recognized7 that four diffusion coefficients can be used to describe ordinary interdiffusion in a ternary system, while as many as six coefficients may be required to include the Kirkendall effect. It is likely that the number of independent coefficients will be shown to be less than four and six, respectively, through the application of the thermodynamics of irreversible processes.5 The simplest type of diffusion in a multicomponent system is tracer diffusion, since each component is characterized by its own tracer-diffusion coefficient in an alloy of a given composition. Thus, in a ternary alloy there are three tracer-diffusion coefficients, each a function of composition and temperature. The present research program is a study of tracer diffusion in the copper corner of the Cu-Ni-Zn system out to 30 at. pct each of Ni and Zn in a 150°C range of temperature just below the solidus temperature. Microscopic observations during creep tests were made on AI-20 pet Zn, 80 pet Ni-20 pet Cr, and 25 and 3S aluminum specimens. All these materials failed in an inter-crystalline manner under certain stress and temperature conditions. Particular atten-tion was given to the initiation and propagation of intercrystalline cracks in coarsegrained AI-20 pct Zn specimens. The geometry of the grains and grain boundaries in these specimens was known before the tests. On the basis of the observations and a knowledge of the interaction between grains and grain boundaries, a mechanism of intercrystalline fracture and propagation of the fracture has been proposed. METAL, and alloy fracture occurs essentially in two ways: transcrystalline and intemrystalline. In the past most of the work done in this field was centered on the determination of stress criteria for fracture. The specimens used for these studies were tested under varying conditions of stress state, temperature, and strain rate. Unfortunately, very little attention was given to the initiation and propagation of the fracture, whereas the nature of fracture was examined closely only after failure. Several extensive reviews of these studies have been published by Orowan, Smith, Barrett, and Petch.1, 4 It is well known that a material which exhibits a ductile and transcrystalline fracture can be made to exhibit a brittle and intercrystalline fracture by modifying its composition and by heat treatment. This modification may or may not result in microscopically observable precipitation in the grain boundaries." In the creep of any one alloy the transition of transcrystalline to intercrystalline fracture is a function of stress, strain rate, and temperature." The tendency for intercrystalline fracture to occur increases as the strain rate decreases and the testing temperature increases. Extensive work on high purity aluminum (99.995 pet) under creep conditions showed the importance of the interaction between grains and grain boundaries, and the different responses of grain and grain boundaries to the variables: stress, strain rate, and temperature.7, 8 It was also shown that grain boundary deformation necessarily has to be accommodated in the grains by various deformation means as. for example, fold formation. The type of fracture resulting from the creep of high purity aluminum was invariably found to be transcrystalline. On the other hand, 2S and 3s aluminum were, under certain conditions, found to fracture in an intercrystalline manner." One reason given for this was that the grains could accommodate to a lesser extent the deformation of the grain boundaries.19 It was decided to examine this line of reasoning in greater detail and to investigate the particular interactions between grains and grain boundaries that result in the incidence and progression of inter-ct,ystalline fracture. It is also the purpose of this paper to show where and how intercrystalline cracks start and how they propagate to result in fracture. Several alloys—Al-20 pct Zn, 80 pet Ni-20 pet Cr, 2S and 3s aluminum-— were used for this study, but attention was paid mainly to the behavior of an A1-20 pet Zn alloy, since its general creep behavior has been established." From the results of this study a mechanism of intercrystalline fracture is proposed. Experimental Procedure The experimental procedure was similar to that used in previous work and has been detailed elsewhere.' Two parallel flat surfaces were milled from an originally round specimen, giving a gage portion which was 1x0.09X0.17 in. Some round specimens, 1/4 in. round by 1 in., were also tested. The A1-20 pet Zn specimens. which were annealed at 1030°F for 24 hr, showed two to four grains across the width of the test bar, and most of the grains occupied the whole thickness of the specimenu. At the same time, chemical and crystallographic research on the clay minerals during the past few years has laid a suitable foundation upon which to base conclusions of economic value drawn from field observations. All of the criteria and deductions herein presented are based upon extensive field work by the senior author, both in the United States and Canada, and when .subjected to the ultimate tests of development and exploitation they have held up remarkably well, despite the fact that many of these conclusions apparently have not been reviewed in the literature heretofore. The nomencelature of the bleaching clays is rather confusing in the light of present-day commercial standards and has even led to litigation.'" The old term "fuller's earth" is largely based upon trade usage and the definition of the term therefor? is dependent upon the changing standards of commerce. For statistical purposes the Bureau of Mines8' classes as "fuller's earth" all natural bleaching or filtering claylike materials that possess high adsorptive capacity without previous chemical treatment or activation. Conversely, the so-called activated or acid activated clays are now generally recognized as any clay mineral or mixture of the clay minerals whose adsorptive capacity has been developed to commercial standards by chemical or physical treatment. Therefore, without attempting to propose any additions to the nomenclaturc: of bleaching clays, this paper will refer to naturally adsorptive clays and activable clays, respecbively, for the two types indicated.

In September, 1930, H. N. Eavenson, then Chairman of the Coal Division, appointed a Committee on Methods of valuing Coal Propelvties, with John B. Dilworth as chairman. The latter prepared a schedule' of features for consideration under the general headings of Undeveloped and Developed Coal Properties. These subjects were divided among the members of the committee and during the next year written discussions of his allotted subjects were received from each member. Mr. Grimes and Mr. Eavenson discussed the entire list,. These discussions were mimeographed and a set sent to each member before the meeting of the Institute in February, 1932. There was a general discussion at that meeting. At the meeting in February, 1934, Mr. Dilworth submitted a report12 which summarized the accumulated opinions and data and presented the conclusions of the committee as a whole on the subjects embraced in it's schedule. Members of the committee expressed the desire that some of the individual opinions be published for reference. Mr. R. Ground movements in the zone adjoining an active cave were measured at four sites in the San Manuel Mine. Measurements were made to detect extension and inclination, basic components of displacement, which can readily be duplicated by mine personnel using relatively simple equipment. The displacements demonstrated the development of a zone of strain relief surrounding the active cave, within which the ground tends to migrate toward the cave, and extension cracks develop tangential to the cave. This expansion of the ground surrounding an active cave can be exploited to promote future caving; it also creates special problems with respect to the design of an effective ground support system for mine openings in the production area.
