The extractive metallurgy of primary aluminum from its ores is discussed with special attention to the production of alumina from high grade ores by the Bayer process, including differences between American and European practice and a brief description of some processes for lower grade ores and the electrolytic reduction of the oxide to aluminum. METALLIC aluminum is not found in nature, but the oxides, hydroxides, and especially the silicates are plentiful. The estimated percentage of in in the crust of the earth is about 8 pct while that of iron is about 5 pct. By far the larger portion of this is combined with silica in the form of various clay minerals and igneous silicate rocks. From the point of view of extractive metallurgy of aluminum, these are low grade ores while the better qualities of bauxite are the high grade ores. There have been various definitions of bauxite but perhaps the best definition at the present time is that bauxite is a rock or earth commonly used as an ore of aluminum or its salts in which the aluminum is present predominantly as a hydrate or a mixture of hydrates and hydrous oxides. It contains varying amounts of oxides of silicon, iron, and titanium and traces of compounds of some of the less common elements. The silica is mainly combined with alumina as clay or clay minerals which are hydrous aluminum silicates, although a part of it may be present as quartz sand. On the American continents, the alumina is mainly present as gibbsite, Al2O3 . 3H2O, and the same may be said of the best known deposits of the Dutch East Indies and some of the deposits in India. In France and other countries in Europe as well as in Africa, the alumina is present mainly as boeh-mite, A12O3 . H2O, but in some of these deposits it is mixed with minor amounts of gibbsite. Some other deposits, such as those in the islands of Haiti and Jamaica, evidently contain two or more hydrates or hydrous oxides of alumina in varying proportions. Perhaps the main portion of the alumina may be present as gibbsite and boehmite with the proportion between the two varying rather widely. In the silicate minerals, including clay, the alumina is chemically combined with silica and has not been separated satisfactorily by mechanical or physical ore-dressing methods. Low grade bauxites are mixtures of hydrates, usually gibbsite or boehmite, with clay, iron oxides, etc. In some low grade bauxites, it is possible to separate a portion of the gibbsite or boehmite, which may be present as relatively hard and coarse particles, from soft or finely divided clay minerals by log washing or similar methods. This has been applied to the product of some mines or parts of them, but on other ores it is not applicable. In some cases the gibbsite or boehmite is almost as fine and soft and of nearly the same specific gravity as the clay minerals so that washing and gravity separations are not successful. The iron oxide, the clay minerals, and a part of the titanium minerals are often so finely dispersed in the ore that any of the physical mineral separation methods, including separations by gravity, particle size, flotation, and electrostatic or magnetic separation, have not been commercially SUCCESSFUL except on relatively small lots of ore. For these reasons, the only available methods of separation on the general run of ores have been methods which would be classed as chemical rather than physical or mechanical separations. Aluminum oxide can be reduced by carbon at temperatures above 1800°C to form metallic aluminum and aluminum carbide or nitride. The temperature for rapid reduction of aluminum oxide to metallic aluminum is about the boiling point of aluminum and above the temperatures necessary to reduce iron, silicon, and titanium so that the direct reduction of an aluminum ore with carbon will produce an alloy of aluminum, iron, titanium, silicon, etc., which may be mixed with carbides and nitrides. Also a large amount of the reduced aluminum may be lost as a vapor except in the presence of some alloying agent such as copper or other metals. While it is possible to refine such alloys or mixtures so as to produce commercially pure aluminum, the methods which have been found are too expensive for the present market. Introduction Grinding circuits are used to reduce the particle size of ores to the size desired for beneficiation or to grind a concentrate to a size required for final marketing. Grinding and classification can be carried out using either wet or dry circuits. Most sulfide ores are ground in wet circuits using one or more stages of grinding to obtain the necessary mineral liberation to produce a final concentrate which will meet the desired criteria. Iron ores are ground in circuits applicable to the particular ore using either wet or dry grinding. Nonmetallic minerals frequently present different requirements. Barite is likely to be subjected to wet grinding before beneficiating the ore; the concentrate is dried and then dry ground to meet market particle size requirements. The one thing that most mill operators will agree to is that there is no such thing as the "best" configuration of equipment for grinding. The circuit which works well on one ore may be totally unsatisfactory for another ore body. The general trend in the industry is flow sheet simplication with fewer parallel circuits instead of multiple-line circuits using small mills. This change in philosophy has been brought about by the saving of both capital and operating costs that may be possible with larger equipment. Remember that comminution is basically a very inefficient process, and that the costs can range upwards to 50% of the total milling costs. It, therefore, behooves the mill operator to carefully design his grinding and classification circuits. He must ascertain the optimal economic particle size for beneficiation and then make certain he has achieved the best balance between capital and operating costs to achieve the desired mesh of grind. Equipment Grinding circuits consist of one or more pieces of equipment to grind the solids. Generally, these circuits include one or more grinding mills, classification equipment, and the necessary materials handling equipment such as pumps, pipelines, and conveyors. There are many different types of equipment available which are used to grind and classify ores and minerals. Following is a tabulation of most of the equipment used for wet and/or dry grinding.

The electrical resistance of titanium as a function of purity and temperature was measured from —325" to 2800°F. Two points of inflection in the data plots were found, and an increase in resistance with increase in temperature above the transformation was observed. IN 1948 Greiner and Ellis' reported on the thermal and electrical properties of titanium, including a study of the effect of temperature on the electrical resistance. The materials used in the research were obtained from the United States Bureau of Mines, where powder metallurgy techniques were being employed for consolidation purposes. These authors found a decreasing resistance with increasing temperature above 1625°F, and concluded that the latter temperature represented the point of transformation from hexagonal close-packed to body-centered cubic structure on heating. They reported a specific resistivity value of 55x10-6 ohm-cm, and showed that dp/dt was positive, decreasing with increasing temperature above ambient. In one of his early texts Hume-Rothery2 mentioned that certain metals, including titanium, exhibited minima in plots of resistance vs temperature. He indicated that this occurred at 212°F. Reporting many years ago on the effect of temperature on the electrical resistance of zirconium, de Boer and Fast³ showed that phase transformation in this sister metal occurred over a range of temperatures, the extent varying with its purity. Graphs of resistance vs temperature, showing transformation effects over a range of several hundred degrees, were presented for relatively impure metal. In the latter case the resistance decreased with increasing temperature throughout the region of partial phase transformation, thereafter increasing as predicted for normal metals by modern theories of the solid state. Since the quality of metal used in previous studies was substandard compared with iodide-type titanium, and in view of the fact that there seemed to be some rather unusual observations in the reported literature, it was decided to undertake a more extensive study of the thermal effects using high purity titanium, and to include temperature ranges beyond those which had been studied in order to ascertain whether or not the characteristics of zirconium would be duplicated. Experimental Materials Materials used in this investigation included commercial quality titanium (Ti-75A produced by the Titanium Metals Corp. of America) in the form of ¼ in. diam rods, and high purity iodide titanium (produced by the Foote Mineral Co.) in the form of crystal bar of irregular size. The latter was cold-swaged into rod form and machined to the desired size. Lead wires to all specimens consisted of 18 gage Ti-75A. Chemical analyses of the stock materials are given in Table I. After a year-long study comparing existing crafts and techniques for ocean exploration with the future needs of oceanologists, the University of Pennsylvania's ocean engineering research team has come up with a system proposal for prolonged deep-sea exploration. Given the assumption that it will be necessary to re-explore our oceans every 25 years or so, engineers from the University's Towne School of Civil and Mechanical Engineering believe the best sys- tem for future ocean exploration would consist of a stable, manned surface ship operating and controlling two types of vehicles-an unmanned untethered craft for broad search missions, and an unmanned, tethered vehicle for detailed work.

Rolled sheet products are elastically anisotropic and a large number of measurements of Young's modulus and rigidity modulus are necessary to completely specify their elastic properties. This paper describes and uses a simple measurement technique to obtain the nine elements of the elastic modulus tensor from which all the elastic The elastic properties of a polycrystalline material are usually specified by giving the Young's modulus E and the rigidity modulus G. Unfortunately, these two moduli by themselves are insufficient to completely specify the elastic properties because the rolling process introduces a preferred orientation which makes the material properties can be deduced. In particular, the variation of Young's modulus and the rigidity modulus in the principal planes of a sheet of ausformed steel were deduced. Furthermore, the variation of Young's modulus in the rolling plane was compared with direct measurements. anisotropic. This anisotropy makes E and G functions of the orientation of the test specimen in the sheet so that a complete description of the elasticity requires many measurements on a large number of specimens. A more fundamental approach to the problem is to consider the sheet as a single crystal and measure the elements of its elastic modulus tensor. Although this appears formidable, there have been developed recently high-frequency ultrasonic techniques which yield these tensor elements directly. The peninsula of Nicoya contains virtually all of the known manganese deposits of Costa Rica. These are south and west of the Tempisque River, which flows across the peninsula near its juncture with the mainland. This peninsula forms the westernmost part of the province of Guana-caste, which is the northern. of the two Pacific Coast provinces of Costa Rica. The larger villages are connected by ox-cart roads and trails. The area may be covered on horseback without difficulty except during the rainy season, when rivers are in flood and difficult to ford. This is particularly true of the Rio Seco-Guay-jiniquil area, where there are no inhabitants and few open trails through the tropical jungle. Santa Cruz and Sardinal are served by the Taca Airlines, two planes a week from San Jose and Puntarenas. The port of Puntarenas has excellent loading facilities but none are available nearer the manganese districts; there ore must be lightered to vessels standing offshore. Physiography In Costa Rica there are three physiographic divisions: (I) the central plateau (Mesa Central), a somewhat dissected lava platform upon which are superimposed volcanic peaks, some of which are still active; (2) the Atlantic lowlands and (3) the Pacific lowlands. The peninsula of Nicoya and the larger part of the province of Guanacaste lie within the Pacific low- lands. The term "lowland" indicates relation to the central plateau, as the peninsula of Nicoya is largely mountainous. The mountains of Nicoya form the southern extremity of a range of low hills, which are almost continuous along the Costa Rican coast to the Nicaraguan border. The coast line shows evidence of subsidence. The Gulf of Nicoya obviously is the drowned valley of the Tempisque River. The west coast of Nicoya shows many rocks, shoals, bays, inlets and small islands as evidence of a sea encroachment. The altitude of the manganese deposits ranges from 0 to 800 ft. Topography is of the mature type of wide valleys and low hills, often with abrupt slopes. The climate is tropical and humid; rainfall of 125 in. falls largely between Sept. I and Jan. I. Vegetation often is very dense, the Rio Seco-Guayjiniquil area being truly tropical jungle, containing many hardwoods. History and Production The production of manganese ore in Costa Rica apparently dates from the first World War. It reached a peak of about 10,000 tons in the year 1919, then declined rapidly. Evidence of this period of prospecting has rotted away or been swallowed by the jungle. The war now in progress apparently revived the interest in Costa Rican manganese and has encouraged further prospecting. Deposits long known have been redenounced and trails have been cut through the jungle to them. Many new deposits have been discovered in the last

OIL well drilling fluids have become a vital part of the drilling industry during the past 25 years. From chance usage of drilling mud at the fabulous Splindletop field in 1901, drilling fluid control has become an extremely technical and exacting science. Drilling for oil today involves exploration at depths ranging to 21,000 ft, nearly 4 miles. Geological formations encountered at these depths offer a tremendous challenge to the production, research, and service facilities of any drilling mud company.

Under the designations "industrial talc" and "soapstone" are included earth materials of widely different chemical and mineral compositions. Talc, the mineral, is a hydrous magnesium silicate, with a suggested theoretical formula H2Mg3(SiO3)4 or H2O.3MgO.4SiO2, which postulates 63.5 pct SiO2, 31.7 pct MgO, and 4.8 pct H20.18 Single grains or leaves of talc, however, seem to have variations in water content that range from 3.5 pct to more than 7 pct, as well as slight differences in the proportions of MgO and Si02.20 Most of the industrial talcs produced in the United States do not approach the composition given above (see Table 1), but are essen- [ ]

THIS chapter and Chapter 19 deal with the heat quantities involved in open-hearth steelmaking, including the thermal efficiency of the furnace as a generator of high-temperature heat, the heat storage in the steel and slag produced and in the furnace walls, and the heats of the various chemical reactions involved in combustion, in the formation of slag, and the refining of steel. The fundamental laws to be considered are the first two laws of thermodynamics as applied to problems involving sensible and potential (or latent) heat only: 1. Heat input equals heat outflow plus storage. 2. Heat may be transferred only from a hotter body to a colder one. The first of these laws relates to the various heat quantities or the heat balance of the process. No one has as yet made an open-hearth heat balance that came out almost exactly balanced. The cause probably lies in the difficulties of accurate temperature and flow-rate measurements at the high temperatures involved and the inherent complexities in flow distribution and air leakage present in any real open-hearth furnace system. Some idea of the magnitude of the heat quantities involved can be obtained by a brief, crude outline of the heat balance of a 90-ton heat of steel. We will assume a 60 to 70 per cent hot- metal charge in a fairly fast working and only moderately efficient furnace, burning fuel oil, with a fuel consumption of around 4 million Btu per net ton of ingots produced. The time from start of charge to tap is 9 hr. During this period, the oil burned represents 360 million Btu and the sensible heat in the preheated air at the port ends is 117 million Btu, so that the total heat input at the ports is 477 million Btu. Heat stored in the steel and slag at the end of the heat, plus the various amounts absorbed by certain bath reactions, amounts to a total of 195 million Btu, but 120 million of this is supplied by the heat in the hot metal and by various heat-evolving reactions in the bath,

Examination showed that characteristic cleavage step patterns are observed on the cleavage surfaces of undeformed, slipped, bent, twinned, compressed, and indented zinc crystals; and the effect of temperature is discussed. Dimples were seen to produce cleavage steps in a treelike pattern in otherwise undeformed crystals. The steps seem to originate when cracks intersect screw dislocations. IT has been known for a long time that the path of fracture in polycrystals may be discontinuous (see Jaffe, Reed, and Mannl for review). Recently, Kies, Sullivan, and Irwin2 have proposed, and given evidence, that crack propagation is discontinuous within individual crystals as well. Other evidence has been given by Low.' When discontinuous cracks within a crystal join together to make a macrocrack, the lamellae between each set of two cracks are torn somewhere, forming small cliffs. These cliffs appear as lines when the cleavage surface is observed microscopically.4,5 The lines have been called vein, tree, and riverlike markings by various authors, and they have sometimes been mistaken for fissures. The descriptive term cleavage steps is used in this paper. Cleavage steps vary in height over a wide range of values, from molecular dimensionsG to lor. and larger. Kies, Sullivan, and Irwin,2 as well as George,' have shown that the gross cleavage step patterns for plastics, polycrystalline metals, and for mono-crystals are sometimes similar. Thus, they depend mostly on the mechanical variables that prevail during cleavage and are relatively insensitive to the structure of the material. For example, parabolic markings2,7,8 sometimes result when cracks open up ahead of, and not coplanar with, the main crack front. If the advance crack has the same velocity as the main crack, their intersection line is a parabola, otherwise it is a hyperbola or an ellipse. The patterns are strongly affected by differences in crack velocities. This results in chevron patterns which point to the place of origin of the main crack. It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate the existence of a mechanism of cleavage step formation which is a continuous rather than a discontinuous process. Also, certain characteristic step patterns are described, and the strong effect of temperature is shown. The specimens were zinc monocrystals (grown from 99.999+ pct pure metal). These were cleaved at room temperature and at — 196°C. Results and Discussion Cleavage step patterns are highly variable from point to point on a given specimen, as well as from one specimen to another. Although the patterns shown in the photographs are typical, they have been selected for graphic illustration. Figs. la and lb compare undeformed crystals that were cleaved at —196 °C and room temperature, respectively. Cleavage at room temperature (Fig. lb) resulted in a higher density of high steps (dark black lines) and enhanced the visibility of the fine background markings. Deformation by simple slip caused no marked change in the step patterns until the glide strain reached about 1.0. But, as Fig. lc shows, the density of high cleavage steps was greatly increased by large glide strains. Corrugations lying perpendicular to the slip direction may also be seen in Fig. lc. These are caused by deformation bands. The cleavage resistance of the crystal of Fig. lc was very high compared to undeformed crystals (estimated by the force on a needle required for cleavage). Striking and varied cleavage step patterns were observed on bent crystals. Two characteristic patterns that were observed on crystals bent at 25°C, and cleaved by reverse bending at —196°C, are shown in Figs. 2a and 2b. The first, Fig. 2a, consists of V-shaped lines similar to the parabolas of other materials2,7 Fig. 2b shows a pattern that is the equivalent of Fig. la, consisting of faint background lines with a few higher step markings. Cleavage of bent crystals at room temperature resulted in Figs. 2c and 2d. Now, the cleavage step lines show a strong tendency to follow one of two perpendicular paths. In Fig. 2c (bent once), many of the cleavage step components that lie parallel to the bend axis are assembled into irregular lines. In Fig. 2d (bent twice), the cleavage steps again tend to consist of two perpendicular components, but neither of the components is assembled into lines. Also, the step density is higher.

THE results of an extensive experimental program relating to the effectiveness of gravel screens have been correlated. The factors considered in some detail include gravel size and condition of packing, sand size and size distribution, fluid velocity, fluid viscosity, and thickness and arrangement of gravel screens. Good agreement between calculated values based upon probability considerations and experimental results relating to the influence of the thickness of the gravel screen was obtained. All of these factors are treated in the correlation in order that their influence may be taken into account in ascertaining the characteristics of an effective gravel screen for a particular set of conditions. The details of the experimental program are not given in the present paper but a description of generalized behavior and typical experimental results are recorded in graphic form. INTRODUCTION Gravel screens have been placed in water and oil wells for a number of years1,2,3 with the dual objective of increasing the productivity and decreasing the entrance of sand into the well bore. An understanding of the factors controlling the effectiveness of gravel screens in this connection is of industrial interest because it will lead to the proper selection of gravel. Some of the fundamental considerations involved in the migration of sand through a coarser body of porous materials were investigated by Coberly and Wagner4 and further experimental work has been carried out by Gumpertz.5 Apparently the pertinent phenomena are somewhat complex and are influenced by many variables. The present paper deals with the prediction of the behavior of gravel screens under the conditions encountered in practice but does not attempt to discuss the experimental methods or results that were obtained as a background and upon which the prediction is based. INFLUENCE OF GRAVEL SCREENS UPON PRODUCTIVITY The use of a gravel screen may increase the productivity of a well by increasing its effective diameter, and this constitutes one of the objectives of its use. The permeability of most gravels and coarse sands that are employed in practice is so large compared to that of the sand in place that relatively little loss in production rate will arise from the use of material fine enough to cause the desired resistance to sand migration. For example, in Fig. I is depicted the approximate variation in the permeability of closely sized spherical gravels under the conditions of packing likely to be encountered in screens. The dotted lines indicate the variation that might be found because of differences in packing. It should be realized that the permeability is not a single-valued function of the. average grain diameter but is related to a large number of factors, including the size, the size distribution and the shapes of the particles. However, Fig. I does permit a rough estimation of the permeability of closely sized- spherical gravels and shows that the permeability with even the smaller particles is very large compared to that of most petroleum production horizons.

STANFORD UNIVERSITY, CALIFORNIA Our activities for the year 1918-19 have closed with the coming of summer. It has been a most successful year in many respects, especially in the reorganization necessary after the war conditions had passed. An INITIATION SCENE AT STANFORD UNIVERSITY. "old-days" initiation was held on the Stanford campus by the Society a few weeks ago.
