Upon the solution depend the health and comfort of the employee and his family, and as a consequence his contentment and efficiency. The following description covers briefly the methods installed for Witherbee, Sherman & Co. The operation of the system has been for about two years under the direct supervision of T. A. Hammond, Land Agent, and I am indebted to him for a compilation of the results.

The Nichols series system of electrolytic copper refining has successfully maintained its strong competitive position in the copper-refining industry of today; therefore the improvements made in accomplishing this result are of interest. While additional interest would lie in specific comparisons of results obtained in series operation with those in multiple, we have refrained from such a comparison because it can be fair to both only when they are operating under similar conditions on the same grade of materials. Historical The Nichols Copper Co. started a small refinery at Laurel Hill, using its present system, about 1892. The details of the process in its early stage of development were kept strictly secret, so that no information was published or interchange of ideas permitted with the staffs of other copper refineries, where the multiple system was being developed at the same time. However, the fundamentals of the process and type of cell used today differ very little from their earliest form. All operations including loading and unloading of tanks, and all transportation as well, were carried on by hand. The plant remained in this condition with a gradual expansion taking place until the World War forced such a rapid development that little time or thought could be devoted to modernization or mechanical improvement requiring careful design or detailed planning. Considerable progress was made, however. (1) Large refining furnaces were developed. (2) The old expensive air-lift type of circulation was abandoned in favor of the present system. (3) Operating technique was gradually developed to a high point of efficiency. (4) Tank construction and lining were greatly improved, the first concrete tank being installed in 1915. (This tank is still in operating condition.) (5) A new power plant was constructed. (6) Fuel oil was substituted for lump coal on the refining furnaces. (7) Mechanical casting of the finished product was accomplished. During this entire period the plant was particularly fortunate in receiving only high-grade, clean copper bullion coming principally from the Phelps Dodge mines in Arizona. PRESIDENT Truman's economic report to Congress calls for an increase of 40 billion dollars in the value of goods and services produced in the United States by 1955; this is an increase of 16 percent over our 1949 production. If such an increase is to be realized, it will be possible only by a comparable increase in the production of steel-the keystone of our economy. Going one step further, since the raw materials of steel are iron ore, limestone, and coal, the President's goal can be reached only through the efforts of the mining industry. Coal and limestone reserves are not critical at this time, but the abundance of iron ore reserves has been subject to controversy. In this issue we proudly present "Cerro Bolivar--Saga of a Crisis in Iron Ore Averted" (a story which has been seven years in the making and three years in the getting).

A MATTER of much concern at present to the coal-mining industry of-Great Britain is the effect of the working of the Coal Mines Act, 1930. This Act, which received the Royal Assent on Aug. 1, 1930, contains five parts: (I) production, supply and sale of coal; (II) the reorganization of the coal-mining industry; (III) hours of work; (IV) the Coal Mines National Industrial Board; (V) general. The first three parts are of major interest and discussion can be confined to them.

The history of surface mining is essentially that of mining coal, copper, and iron ores and the non- metallic minerals, i.e. clays, gypsum, phosphate rock, sand, gravel and stone. The accompanying table comparing world production with that of the U. S. indicates that two thirds of the 8.8 billion tons of ores mined throughout the world come from surface operation. Assuming that the stripping ratio for surface mining in the U. S. applies equally to world production, then over 21 billion tons of waste, or a total of nearly 27 billion short tons of material are mined annually in the world by surface methods. Several factors are significant indicators of economic and technologic trends in surface mining. Among these are increasing production, a shift in emphasis from underground to surface mining, a decline in the grade and quality of some crude materials and, with few exceptions, an increase in the productivity of labor.

Laboratory and pilot scale tests have been made to determine the utility of heavymedia separation, particularly a cone-type separator, as a means of recovering aluminum and other values from shredded municipal solid waste. The effect of the method of shredding on the behavior of aluminum in a heavy-media system was determined. Two-stage pilot-scale heavy-media separations were made with size fractions of shredded refuse. Recoveries of aluminum, as well as other components of the refuse, were measured and medium losses determined. The experimental results indicate that with certain reservations a heavy-media cone system can be utilized for aluminum separation and recovery from shredded and air-classified municipal solid waste. Observations made using two-stage heavy-media separation in a drum unit are included. Qualitatively, the results from the two types of separators are similar.

Many thousands of years ago when our earliest ancestor first swung out of a tree, picked up a rock, and threw it at what he hoped might be his lunch, the minerals industry, in a manner of speaking, was born. It was then a very long step indeed to the primitive metal industry of our early civilizations, for we know that precious metals were accumulated and some metal objects were produced several thousand years ago. Prospecting, or "exploration" to use the modern euphemism, consisted of little more than outcrop examination and the use of a gold pan, and it probably did not change much from our earliest civilizations until relatively recent times. In a general sense, all the early explorers of North America were also prospectors, for mineral wealth was certainly one of the goals of the first pioneers and settlers. The earliest pioneers didn't do too badly either, for they discovered copper and iron in various places in the Appalachians and Michigan, gold in the Southeast Piedmont and many mineralized areas in the Southwest. In most places these were outcropping ores or gossans, and the prospecting was incidental to the arduous task of ekeing out a living in a new land. It was the explosive discovery of rich placer gold deposits at Sutter's Mill in California that caught the public fancy and precipitated the establishment of prospecting as a full-time occupation. After the end of the Civil War in 1865, full-time prospecting became an important occupation and continued as such for almost three generations. Prospectors equipped with picks, shovels, gold pans and four-footed transportation swarmed all over what are now our Western States, discovering thousands upon thousands of mineral showings-and certainly most of today's large mining districts. Our vigorous western mining industry is a tribute to the courage and persistence of these men. The techniques of these picturesque prospectors, however, were essentially the same as those of their predecessors-examination of every outcrop and assiduous use of the gold pan. The great increase in discovery at this time was therefore due to increased activity rather than to different techniques. An important result of this in- creased prospecting was the growth of interest in geology. It was during this period that the U.S. Geological Survey began to grow. Many of the major mining districts were mapped, and geological studies and projections began to have an impact on further ore discovery. Ore search and development gradually became more geologically oriented and the geologist became a fixture in most mining camps by the 20th century. The development of mass-mining techniques in the early part of the century also changed exploration concepts.

Expansion of concentrator capacity at Iron Ore Company of Canada's Carol Lake plant resulted in a dramatic increase in the production of fines. With iron recovery from the fines running only 18%, Carol Lake engineers initiated an extensive test program which resulted in the installation in July 1977, of a full-scale plant utilizing Reichert cone concentrators. Results to date have indicated a 100% increase in iron recovery from the concentrator's fines product. Carol Lake is located near the western boundary of Labrador, Newfoundland, some 960 km (600 mi) northeast of Montreal. Concentrator operations began in 1962 with a design capacity of 7 million t/y (7.7 million stpy). The bulk of the concentrate was pelletized at a 6 million t/y (6.6 million stpy) pelletizing plant completed in 1963. The remaining concentrate was sold in the international market. The concentrator was first expanded in 1966 to 10 million t/y (11 million stpy) capacity. In 1967, the pellet plant was expanded to match the increase in concentrate production. Sales increases led to a further expansion in 1973. By 1977, more than 40 million tons (44 million st) of crude ore were processed to recover in excess of 17.42 million tons (19 million st) of concentrate and 10.4 million tons (11.5 million st) of pellets.

The purpose of this book is to present the practical side of economic geology concisely and in convenient form; established facts and the applications of accepted views are emphasized; theoretical discussions and questions of genesis are avoided. Coal, iron, and placer deposits are omitted; they are subjects of specialized study that are fully and concisely treated in other works. The reader is assumed to possess a knowledge of mineralogy, petrography, and elementary geology. The arrangement adopted is based on Kemp's theory of magmatic waters, on Lindgren's conclusions on hydrothermal and secondary alterations, and on the theories of secondary enrichment enunciated by Emmons and Weed. No general classification of ore deposits is attempted, nor is any attempt made to fill by hypothesis the wide gaps, nor to explain the apparent contradictions that rank economic geology among the most inexact of sciences. The present knowledge of the subject is too incomplete to warrant such broad generalizations. The demand for good properties generally exceeds the supply. While mines of the first rank will undoubtedly be discovered from time to time, it is probably true that a great proportion of deposits having outcrops of commercial grade or of evident promise have been recognized and explored. A review of mining conditions over long periods shows that the rich discoveries belong to pioneer days, and that as time goes on the more important developments are the result of lower working costs, improved metallurgical processes, and an increasing knowledge of economic geology. When a future Agricola examines the development of copper smelting in the 20th century, he will be amazed at how little took place in the first half of the century and how much in the second. In a period when the technology of transportation, communications and chemical processing advanced many fold, copper smelting remained practically static. The result of tightening energy supplies and stringent environmental controls in recent years has been a spate of development activity that not only is challenging the supremacy of the reverberatory furnace, but threatens to wipe out pyrometallurgical techniques entirely.

INTRODUCTION This introductory paper presents a description and definition of what the finance function is and what it specifically means for the mining industry. In its simplest terms, finance is, "management of money matters". As an area within the discipline of business administration it draws heavily on the related fields of economics and accounting, and to a lesser extent on marketing and production. MINING FINANCE DEFINED In preparing to write about what finance means to the mining industry, I asked a number of mining people the question, "What does mining finance mean to you?" Most responded that mining finance was "How a company borrowed money for mine development", and perhaps half those questioned included "raising equity" in the definition. It is not surprising that the mining industry concept of finance is the providing of funds needed for the objectives of the business, for that was once a view shared by authorities in the field of business administration. Further, it is certainly the area where much of the emphasis has been placed in the past ten to fifteen years as the industry struggled with the development of more remote and more refractory or lower-grade orebodies while profitability and internal cash flow were below expectations. No wonder project finance became such a popular topic. Twenty years ago it is probable that the emphasis would have been on mine valuation, for that subject was the area of finance then most often examined in industry publications. Papers concerning the pros and cons of payback, internal rate of return, and discounted cash flow appeared regularly. Let's examine the following situations, each the result of a financial decision: - Funding the exploration program in a developing country was accomplished by buying the next six-months budget needs in local currency. One week later the currency devalued 30 percent. If the purchase had been delayed or the local currency borrowed short term, a substantial saving would have been made in funding the program. - A major mining company borrows heavily to finance both expansion of its primary mining business and its entry into several new industry segments. When markets for all of the commodities it produces turn down for a prolonged period, there is concern over the adequacy of cashflow to cover debt service in addition to other company needs. The company's financial officers, however, had arranged very large committed credit facilities from numerous financial institutions which assured the availability of funds for several years. This enabled the company to implement a strategy to conserve cash, sell assets and survive until conditions improved. Further, short term suppliers of credit also were comfortable with the assurance that longer term credit was there to support them. -A medium size mining company financed several mines independently with limited obligations on the part of the parent company. The company decided to refinance the operations under one agreement. More flexible terms, lower interest cost and a longer tenor financing were achieved in return for assuming the risk as a direct obligor. - The exploration and development group of a large mining company proposes to develop a new mine in a country in which the company does not presently operate. With a platinum electrode the Eh-pH response in aqueous systems follows an empirical relation [Eh = E- 0.059 pH](1) where E usually carries a value between 0.8 and 0.9 v. The same potential (E) is observed with a number of other noble metal electrodes in the absence of surface poisoning and of other well-defined redox couples. Many sulfide mineral electrodes also respond in a similar manner in solutions containing their respective ions over wide pH ranges, especially in the alkaline pH region. Such a parallelism between noble metal and sulfide mineral electrodes points to certain implications of their surface conditions, and the flotation and leaching behaviors of sulfide minerals under aerated conditions may be inferred with respect to the foregoing Eh-pH response. Comparison of Sulfide Mineral and Noble Metal Electrodes [Fig. 1] shows the Eh-pH response of pyrite, galena, chalcocite, and pyrrhotite electrodes, reported by Sato, and some experimental points obtained with a platinum electrode in distilled water. The Great or Cumberland Valley, which (under a variety of names) extends from Canada, through Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, and East Tennessee, to Alabama, is composed in part of limestones lying immediately above the Potsdam sandstone. Geologically, they belong to the era between the Potsdam and Trenton, and are commonly termed Calciferous. A peculiarity of these limestones is their great richness in limonite or brown hematite ores, which form a large part of the charges of the many blast-furnaces situated on their outcrops. The mines from which the ores are obtained are (properly speaking) only pits or quarries, from which 'the ore is extracted by means of picks or shovels, powder being rarely employed. The ore does not occur casually at any point in the limestone, but forms regular lines, following apparently the outcrops of certain beds. In Lehigh County, Penn., where 1 have been engaged on the Geological Survey of the State, during the past season, there are three or four of these lines. During the progress of the survey I was much struck by the fact that the two most important and promising lines of outcrop were, one at the base of the crystalline schists (forming the South or Lehigh Mountain), and overlying the Potsdam sandstone conformably; the other, near the line of junction of the calciferous limestone with the slates of the Cincinnati epoch. The mines along these two lines, following the topography of the country, were in place, richer and more permanent than those of the belts between, which were generally leaner. A peculiarity of these two lines of outcrop, and one to which I particularly desire to draw attention, is the occurrence of what I at first mistook for a highly altered slaty limestone, but which subsequent analysis proved to consist in great part of damourite (hydrated potash mica). GEOCHEMICAL investigation of trace elements in surface materials was begun near Ely, Minn., in 1953 along the basal contact of Duluth gabbro with Giants Range granite (Fig. 1). This article presents data on the distribution of copper and nickel in till and in stream sediments in the area and proposes an explanation for the types of distribution found. The Duluth gabbro, one of the world's largest basic intrusives, intrudes rocks which range in age from Keewatin to middle Keweenawan. Within the test area the gabbro is in contact with granite except for short sections where it is in contact with remnants of iron formation. Sulfide mineralization occurs within the gabbro, near and parallel to the basal contact for a distance of several miles. Schwartz and Davidson' have described the geologic setting of the mineralization. The sulfides, believed to be syngenetic, include chalcopyrite, cubanite, pentlandite, pyrrhotite, and minor amounts of bornite. They occur disseminated in the silicates and as small interstitial masses. The ratio of copper to nickel is about 3.8:1, based on 66 chemical analyses of rock samples from various outcrops (Ref. 1, p. 702, and Ref. 2). Test Procedures: With specified exceptions, all nickel and copper tests were made by the chromo-graph method,:' which measures the intensity of a colored spot formed by a reaction between the metal being determined and special reagent paper. The intensity is then compared to the intensity of spots prepared from samples of known metal content. Details of the test procedure are outlined in another article (Ref. 4, pp. 77,78). All soil samples tested in this investigation to date have been weighed on an analytical balance. However, a volumetric scoop designed to provide about 0.1 g of soil adds to the speed and ease of testing and has been found to give satisfactory results (Ref. 5, p. 531, and Ref. 19). The size of the samples used for the tests was 0.1 g. Whenever such small samples are used there is some question as to whether they are representative of the several grams in the field sample. Many repeat tests of the samples used in this investigation demonstrated that results can be reproduced within the limits of accuracy of the method without formal mixing beyond that inherent in screening the soil fractions. Furthermore, the 0.1 g is probably as representative of the field sample as the field sample is of its area of influence. Hawkes and Lakin (Ref. 6, p. 291), who considered the general problem, compared ground and quartered bulk samples of 500 g with 5-g grab samples. They concluded that "there is no significant loss in accuracy of data by substituting grab samples for bulk samples." The term soil implies somewhat different things to the geologist, engineer, and soil scientist.' For convenience the term as used in this article refers to unconsolidated material (the mantle) overlying bed rock. Sampling Procedure: Samples were taken at 100-ft intervals along north-south traverse lines across the gabbro-granite contact. The soil (till) samples were taken at an average depth of 1 ft, which was below the high-humus surface layer and into clean till. Samples taken at 1-ft intervals down to ledge showed as high a metal content at 1 ft below the air-surface as at greater depths and in two instances were slightly higher. The till at 1-ft depth did not appear to differ from material at greater depths. Total depth to bedrock has been tested at only a few points and where measured varied from 1 to 10 ft. Aerial Distribution Contours and Profiles: Plotting of copper, nickel, and cobalt content in contour form (Fig. 2) shows that anomalous amounts of these metal ions occur in till over and closely adjacent to mineralized areas of the gabbro. Contouring nickel content alone, or the copper content, outlines the same target area. Contours of the copper content provide a more distinct anomaly than nickel because of the higher copper concentration. The traverses are rather widely spread for interpolation; however, drilling has confirmed the target area essentially as shown.
