In the early part of 1893, I had occasion to make for the owners a professional examination of the Rich Patch tract; and, with their permission, I present in this paper, omitting the commercial portions of my report, those portions which may be valuable to future students of that region. Location, Topography And Geology. The Rich Patch tract comprises about 9000 acres, located about 3 miles west of Low Moor, on the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, in Alleghany county, Va., and immediately adjoining the Low Moor property. In shape the tract is roughly quadrangular, being about 3 miles broad in a northerly and southerly direction, by about 6 miles long from east to West. Potts creek and Jackson river run along its northern boundary. It is drained by Hayes Gap run, Mill branch and Laurel creek, which flour north into Potts creek, and by Karnes creek, which flows northeasterly through the Low Moor property into Jackson river. The topography of the tract is shown by the accompanying map (Fig. I), and need not be described here. The valleys are cut down from 1000 to 1500 feet below the mountain summits, which generally reach an altitude of about 3000 feet above tide. The geological structure of the district is indicated by the geological cross-sections shown in Figs. 2 and 3. These sections show that the formations underlying the property extend from the Lower Silurian lin~estones up to the Devonian slates, including the numbers of the Paleozoic system of rocks as defined by the geological surveys of Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York, from No. 11. to No. VIII. • No. IX. Methods of fair payment for excavating, supporting, and concrete lining tunnels have been sought by various owners for years. Tunneling techniques have changed with the development of equipment-from the hand-mucking operation to the machine mucker and, most recently, to machine-boring; from tunnel supports using timber sets to steel sets to rock bolts and, most recently, to shotcrete support; and from hand-placing the concrete lining using wooden forms to pumping or pneumatic placing using steel forms. As tunnel construction techniques advanced, so did methods for payment for the work performed. The recent development of tunnel-boring machines, or "moles," is precipitating another change. These changes have led to some difficulty in providing proper payment for the various items of work for different types of tunnels. As a major construction agency engaged in water-resources development in the western states, the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation has long been aware of the need for clarification of payment provisions in tunnel construction. The Bureau has some 150 miles of tunnels completed on its projects and about 50 miles of tunnels under construction. In this construction, the Bureau has benefited by the advance made by contractors in improving the techniques of tunnel excavation. To assure that the Bureau has an up-to-date approach to payment provisions, the Chief Engineer recently established a "standard" method of payment for all types of tunnels. It is believed that this new method of payment will be equitable for all contractors bidding on various types of tunnels using the diversity of methods of excavation now available to them. These payment provisions provide for different quantities for excavated tunnels using the blasting technique or using machine-boring techniques. In this way, the contractors have a choice in excavation methods and an equal opportunity to be low in their bids. We believe this will be an incentive to all contractors to be as progressive as the development of new equipment economically allows.

CONTINUED progress in zinc metallurgy has been shown during 1933 by the adoption of new methods as well as the modernization of old processes and equipment, and by the initiation of new fields of activity for future advancement. The use of suspension roasting continued to grow as its advantages and adaptability became increasingly, apparent. The process developed by the National Smelting Co., Ltd., several years ago, of completely roasting on large sintering machines with utilization of the gas for acid manufacture has worked so successfully that an additional machine was installed during the year. At both the Swansea and the Avonmouth Works all of the ore for smelting is now roasted on the large sintering machines, thereby completely eliminating the old hearth-roasting furnaces. Work continued on obtaining partial purification of zinc ores from lead and cadmium by close control of conditions on the sintering machine, and in a few instances by chlorine additions to the ore before sintering. THE rapid increase in cost of discovering new orebodies by churn drilling in the Tri-State district has led to some attempts to lessen the expense by using geophysical methods. Electrical prospecting was tried three or four years ago, but no successful results were recorded. In 1926, the Federal Mining and Smelting Co. engaged the North American Exploration Co., of Houston, Texas, to make some tests with the torsion, balance. At first, it was thought that the most favorable conditions for discovery of ore deposits with the torsion balance would be in locations where the ore was known to occur at rather shallow depths, FIG. 1.-CROSS-SECTION OF DUENWEG LEASE. therefore the first trial was made at Duenweg, east of Joplin, where some zinc ore had been developed at a depth of 130 ft. The gravity gradients at 61 stations on a tract of about seventeen acres indicated plainly one large zone of maximum gravity and a smaller narrow zone of minimum gravity. Fourteen churn-drill holes, half of which struck .ore, show that all the ore found was located outside the zones of maximum and minimum gravity. In the zone of maximum, gravity the limestone beds were closest to the surface, and the first chert beds encountered were at the greatest depth. The results (shown in Table 1) indicated that the gravity of the limestone was greater than the gravity of the fractured chert together with its orebodies, and probably also greater than the bouldery soil and clay on top of the limestone. Dense magnetite pellets were reduced in hydrogen-water vapor-nitrogen mixtures over a temperature range of 400° to 500° C at a pressure of 0.97 atm. The rate of reduction per unit area was found to be constant with time and directly proportional to the partial pressure of hydrogen at a constant ratio of water vapor to hydrogen. Water vapor poisoned the oxide surface by an oxidizing reaction and markedly slowed the reduction. The enthalpy of activation was found to be + 13,600 cal per mole. IN previous papers' ' details were given of the constructlon and use of an apparatus to study the rate of chlorine consumption and the rate of sul- fate and sulfur production when dilute aqueous chlorine solutions were allowed to react with pyrite and galena in acid solutions at or near room temperature. The reaction with pyrite was very rapid, and hence entirely transport-controlled in its kinetics, and produced only ferric and sulfate ions. A mathetnatical model of heal transfer in continuously cast steel slabs is described. The model, consisting of a unidimensional transient conduction equation and boundary condition equations, has been pvogrammed for computer solution. Temperatuve and solidification profiles calculated for a 6-in. slab, being cast under several conditions of secondary cooling, are presented and compared. Calculated solidification profiles are in agreement with reported expevinle~ztal values. For the mold zone, the predicted slab shell thickness can be described by: Resuilts of the study indicate that multibank spray cooling followed by radiant cooling should be employed when solidifying thick slabs with minimum surface temperature of 1600°F. Under these conditions, a 6-in. slab can be expected to solidify in about 8.3 min. Computer results also indicate that radiant cooling can replace spray cooling during solidification of the final 30 pct of slab with little increase in overall solidification time. CONTINUOUS casting has come to the forefront of the steel industry in recent years because of economic advantages resulting from increased yields and elimination of several processing steps. Considerable work, however, remains to be done regarding modifications to the process and operating procedures. Both a lack of operating plants in this country and the experimental difficulties associated with direct measurements on moving castings have made determination of solidification rates and temperature distributions difficult. An alternate approach is to mathematically simulate heat transfer in a continuously cast section, and then calculate the temperature distributions as a function of the controllable variables of the process. Simulation of heat transfer during solidification requires that a nonlinear mathematical problem be solved. As pointed out by Ruddle,' there are two mathematical approaches to the problem- the analytical approach and the numerical approach. While the analytical approach is certainly the more elegant of the two, it does require a number of inexact assumptions because of the complexity of the problem. For example, noteworthy analytical treatments of heat transfer in continuous casting have been developed by Savage Hills,3 and pehlke4 only by making one or more simplifying assumptions such as invariant thermophysical properties, constant heat-transfer coefficients in the mold, and linear temperature profiles in the shell. Simplifying assumptions such as these can introduce considerable uncertainty in the validity of results calculated with analytical solutions. Numerical solutions, which are considerably more versatile, appear to be better suited for solving solidification problems. Complex variations in the boundary conditions and variable thermophysical properties can be handled readily with this technique. Whereas numerical computations can be long and tedious when done by hand, results can now be obtained quite rapidly with the use of either the digital or analog computer. Several numerical models of heat transfer in continuous casting have been published. In 1963, Adenis, Coats, and Ragones published a numerical model used to calculate temperature distributions in direct-chill-cast magnesium billets. More recently, Donaldson and Hess 6 presented results obtained with a numerical computer model of heat transfer in continuously cast steel billets. In the present study, a model of unidimensional heat transfer in continuously cast slabs is presented. The method of solution on a digital computer is also included. Calculated temperature distributions and solidification profiles for various schemes of secondary cooling along with attempts to verify the model are also discussed. MATHEMATICAL MODEL The schematic representation of the slab continuous casting process in Fig. 1 illustrates that the slab passes through three distinct zones of cooling. Accordingly, the mathematical model consists of three parts: 1) solidification in the mold; 2) solidification in the spray cooling zone ; 3) solidification in the radiant cooling zone. Heat-Transfer Equations. The model was developed bymaking a heat balance on a horizontal slice of slab over the time period required for the slice to proceed from the liquid metal meniscus in the mold to the cutoff station. As shown in Fig. 2, the imaginary slice extends from the center line to the surface of the slab. As the slice moves downward, heat is conducted from the center line to the surface of the slab at a rate governed by the surface boundary condition and thermophysical properties of the metal in the slice. Union Minière du Haut-Katanga owns concessions for extracting copper and associated metals in the high plateau region of Katanga. The concession is about 188 miles long by 44 miles wide and has three principal areas: Southern area-The Prince Leopold mine is an underground operation from which a copper-zinc sulfide ore is extracted. The mine and associated concentrator are at Kipushi. Copper concentrates are smelted and converted to blister copper at the Lubumbashi smelter at Elizabethville.

THERE are a number of different types of power plants. Some use coal to generate steam, others use oil or gas either in the form of steam or internal combustion equipment, while still others avail themselves of water power as a source of energy. A general comparison of the relative power production with different sources of energy in the United States, for several different years is set up in Table 1. This table shows that coal was used to generate 85.6 per cent of the total heat power requirements of 1909, and only 59.2 per cent of the 1930 requirements. The increasing proportion of modern heat energy generated by the use of fuel other than coal is apparent. If coal is to maintain its importance as a source of heat energy, the necessity for its improved perform-ance, in which preparation plays an -important part, cannot be stressed too strongly.

INCREASING governmental control of human activities seems inevitable. Within the present generation railroad rates and the public sale of water, gas and electricity have been subjected to rigid regulation. The field of control is slowly but surely being enlarged, and it is the object of this paper to outline in brief space this tendency toward increased governmental regulation, as far as mineral resources are concerned. Our, dual form of government complicates the problem. We must deal not only with the powers of the Federal Government, but also with those of the individual States. In order to approach this question intelligently we must have some conception of the powers and jurisdiction of the States and the United States, respectively, over mineral lands and mineral production. Starting with the Federal Government we find it never owned any public domain within the States that formed a part of the thirteen original colonies and, for historical reasons, the same is true of Tennessee and Texas. The Mid-Western States were erected out of the public domain which was acquired by the United States through cession from the original States or by purchase from foreign nations. Congress early in the last century adopted a policy of leasing public lands containing lead deposits in a portion of this Mid-Western territory, but later abandoned that policy and disposed of such public, lands, mineral and non-mineral, outright so that they long since have practically all passed into private ownership and become subject to the general jurisdiction of the respective State governments. In the great public domain lying west of the Mississippi River, and in portions of some of the Southern States, the Federal Government adopted a new mineral land policy following the discovery of gold in California. (Acts of Congress of 1866, 1870, and 1872.) The mineral lands within these States, instead of being disposed of on the game basis as agricultural lands, as occurred in the Mid-Western States, were segregated from agricultural lands and sold under special laws intended to encourage mining, giving the miner the free right to locate and work these mineral lands without paying any royalty to the Federal Government. The heats of Formation of the compounds Sb2Se3, Bi2Se3, Sb2Te3, and Bi2Te3 and the heats of solution of tellurium and selenium in liquid bismuth have been measured in a liquid metal solution calorimeter. The heat capacities near the melting point, the heats of fusion, and the melting points of the two tellurides have been measured in a constant temperature gradient calorimeter. The thermo-dynamic quantities are interpreted in relation to the stability of the compounds and the nature of the solid-liquid transition. THE selenides and tellurides of several elements of Group VB of the periodic system are of interest because of their electronic properties. The compounds Sb2Se3, Bi2Se3, Sb2Te3, and Bi2Te3 are semi- conductors; they also have gained prominence in the fields of thermoelectricity and photoconductivity. However, little is known about their thermody-namic properties. As part of a research program on the thermo-dynamic properties of intermetallic compounds, the heats of formation of the compounds Sb2Se3, Bi2Se3, Sb2Te3, and Bi2Te3 were measured in a liquid metal solution calorimeter. The heat capacities near the melting point, the heats of fusion, and the melting points of the two tellurides were measured in a constant temperature gradient calorimeter. The results, in addition to their intrinsic interest as thermodynamic quantities, contribute to an understanding of the stability of the compounds and the nature of the solid-liquid transition. 1) EXPERIMENTAL 1.1) Materials. Samples of the compounds SbzSe3 and Bi2Se3 were prepared by melting the elements in stoichiometric proportions in evacuated Vycor capsules followed by quenchinn in water. This paper was prepared upon request as a contribution to a symposium covering the manufacture, properties, and uses of the important non-ferraus metals. In approaching a subject as broad as this, there is a natural desire to build up a comprehensive and finished production which shall constitute a dependable source of information on all questions properly belonging to this branch of metal technology. There are, however, a number of circumstances, apart from the mere routine of labor and thought involved, which operate rather effectively against the possibility of completing such .an ambitious program at the present time. First of all, as far as any public record of results is concerned, the commercial rolling, drawing, and forming of zinc with relation to changes of structure and properties—and this we consider to constitute the clement~ of metal technology—might as well be an unpractised art. We have never seen a published photomicrograph showing the structural characteristics of either hard or soft sheet or strip, although the structure of castings has been frequently described, and other coarse-grained structures resulting from hard-hammering and annealing have been reproduced. Thus, an author in this field must proceed to his task without much assistance from the literature, and the outcome can represent only a personal estimate of principles, facts, or findings, and not a summary or survey of progress in the entire field as determined by varied experience, practice, and settled opinion.

Oxidized cobalt powder is known to have a magnetic hysteresis loop which is asymmetric with respect to the magnetization axis. The experiment described herein shows that the orientation relationship between the basal plane of hexagonal cobalt and the oxide which forms upon it at 400°C is {111}ux//{100.1 }co <110>ux//<11.O> This orientation relationship allows a magnetic interaction between the antiferromagnetic oxide and the ferromagnetic substrate which could account for the offset hysteresis loop. Oxidized nickel powder has a symmetrical hysteresis loop and so is apparently not influenced by any magnetic interaction between metal and oxide. The orientation of the oxide (cubic) was found to be identical with that of the nickel substrate when the oxide forms on a polished surface parallel with {111} Ni. IN 1956 W. H. Meiklejohn and C. P. Bean discovered that fine particles of cobalt which had been prepared in a certain way have a magnetic hysteresis loop which in a strong field is asymmetric relative to the magnetization axis.&apos; The cobalt powder exhibited this unusual magnetic property only after it had been oxidized in air or oxygen; it lost the shifted hysteresis loop when the oxide was reduced in hydrogen. X-ray and neutron diffraction&apos; experiments showed the presence of cobaltous oxide (COO) and hexagonal cobalt in samples exhibiting the biased hysteresis loop and specifically showed no indication of any other compound with the exception of mercuric oxide.* The magnetic hysteresis loop becomes symmetrical above the Nee1 temperature (paramagnetic state) of COO. Therefore, it was concluded that the anomalous magnetic behavior is associated with the influence of cobaltous oxide upon the metallic cobalt. It has been proposed that crystallographic coherency may exist between the cobalt and a plane of some antiferromagnetic material which has unbalanced spin distribution and sufficient magnetic anisotropy to hold its spin in the direction which existed when the specimen was cooled. COO has these properties. Therefore, Roth&apos; has suggested that cobaltous oxide may form with a {111} plane parallel and coherent with the basal plane of the hexagonal cobalt metal and proposed that, as consequence of the antiferromagnetic interaction between COO and the underlying cobalt, the magnetization direction in oxidized fine Co particles may be ro-lated from the easy c-direction.2 Such a relationship, he proposed, would explain the observed magnetic effect in oxidized cobalt powder. The main purpose of this study was to determine the orientation relationship, if any, between the basal plane of cobalt and the oxide which forms upon it. Attempts to produce a film of COO which was strong enough to be handled were not successful. However we did succeed in making a film of CoCo2O, which was strong enough to be removed from the cobalt substrate and mounted on an electron-microscope grid. Because of the close structural similarity of COO and CoCo2O, we believe the orientation relation found for CoCo2O, on cobalt probably also holds for COO on cobalt. The epitaxial relationship of NiO and Ni also was investigated. To date no shifted hysteresis loop has been observed with nickel powder. However, the similarity of atomic array in cobalt and nickel leads to the prediction that a {111} of NiO may be parallel with a (111} of nickel. Experimental Method Cobalt-Cobalt Oxide—A coarse-grained specimen of a (hexagonal) cobalt was prepared by allowing a large crystal of fee cobalt to transform slowly at 400°C. The crystal was then cut to expose a surface parallel with the basal plane. A back reflection Laue X-ray photograph showed that the 00.1 plane was within 2" of the cut surface. The surface was mechanically polished and then electro polished in 85 pet orthophosphoric acid after which the crystal was held for 30 min at 400°C in air. During this heat-treatment the surface darkened slightly due to the oxide film which formed. The film was not thick enough to give an X-ray diffraction pattern, even by a glancing-angle technique. Glancing-angle electron diffraction was not possible either, owing to the interference of the electron beam with the high magnetic fields which exist at the 00.1 surface of the cobalt. However, it was possible to make an electron-diffraction photograph of the oxide film by stripping it from the cobalt substrate using the method described later. By maintaining reference marks carefully, it was possible to preserve the orientation relationship between the stripped film and the substrate on which it was formed. The oxidized surface of the crystal was first covered with a 1 pet solution of collodion (cellulose nitrate) in amyl acetate. Experimental evidence is presented which confirnis the epitaxial relationship between the deposited silicon and the sapphire substrate. Four distinct modes of orientation relationships have been established. Parameters have been found where twin density is less than I pct. The early stages of&apos; epitaxy of silicon m sapphire have been examined by electron-microscope techniques... and mechanisms have been proposed. THE first report of the deposition of single-crystal silicon on sapphire (single-crystal aluminum oxide) was made at the American Physical Society Meeting in Canada&apos; by one of us and was subsequently published in the Journal of Applied physics.* This paper summarizes some of the work carried on in this area since that time, in addition to reviewing some of our earlier observations. The initial single-crystal deposits of silicon on sapphire reported were obtained on sapphire planes produced by cutting a sapphire rod perpendicular to its fastest growth direction, which is approximately 60 deg from the C axis. Direct correlations between the microstructure and X-ray data as to the single crystallinity as shown in Fig. 1 are evident. These deposits were identified as (111) silicon on the substrate oriented near the (1123) of sapphire. (Sapphire notations are designated according to the c over a ratio of 2.73.) WALTER DOUGLAS succeeded his father, Dr. James Douglas, as president of Phelps Dodge in 1916. Before assuming office, the new president had been assayer at Bisbee, superintendent of the Copper Queen, general manager of all the Phelps Dodge mining interests, and altogether had spent a full quarter of a century in various phases of the company&apos;s business. Energetic and imaginative, experienced and courageous, he had need of all these qualities before he surrendered the direction of affairs into younger hands, fourteen years later. For the period of his administration was one of sudden ebb apd flow, flush production, drastic curtailment, quick recovery, and near-disaster. In 1917, soon after Walter Douglas became president, Phelps, Dodge & Co., Inc., which had been formed in 1908 as a holding company, went through an internal reorganization for the purpose of simplifying the structure and changing it from a holding company to an operating company. The Rocky Mountain region is defined with some variations for different purposes or by different organizations. For oil and gas development, Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, northwestern New Mexico, and Utah are included in the order of their apparent importance. Portions of adjoining states, such as North and South Dakota, Nebraska, Arizona, Nevada, and Idaho, arc attributary to this region, but have little or no oil or gas production. Nebraska and New Mexico are considered separately (see pp. 412 and 415), and most of the discussion in this report will be confined to Colorado, Montana, and Wyoming. Utah has produced about 200,000 bbl. of oil from the San Juan and Virgin fields, which are isolated and shut in at present. The Clay Basin field in northeastern Utah produces natural gas and distillate, and the Farnham field in central Utah produces carbon dioxide gas. Other Utah areas of some interest are listed in Table I. The Cedar Creek (Baker-Glendive) field in southeastern Montana extends into North Dakota, but is listed under Montana. The other states are in the main wildcat areas, and exploration in 1944 was at a minimum. However, geological and geophysical parties are reviewing them for further testing. Oil production in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming was 459,000 bbl. more than in 1943. Increases of 713,000 bbl. in Colarado and 731,000 bbl. in Montana offset a loss of 985,000 bbl. in Wyoming. This was the first decline in Wyoming since 1938. Field production figures and state totals are given in Table I. Total drilling activities in these three states and Utah increased from 687 wells making 1,442,511 ft. of hole in 1943 to 916 wells making 2,245,803 it. in 1944. Wildcat drilling increased from 163 wells making 331,193 ft. of hole in 1943 to 171 wells making 389,144 it. in 1944. These figures include all drilling wells making footage, not starts or completions, and represent an all-time high in drilling. The year 1944 witnessed the greatest concentration of seismograph activity that the region has had. The Rocky Mountain Oil Scouts Association reported that in 1943, the previous peak year, 91 crew months of work were performed; in 1944, the time was 254 crew months. About 67 per cent of the work was in Wyoming, 18 per cent in Montana, and 12 per cent in Colorado. Twenty-three blocks totaling 400,000 acres were reported assembled in Colorado, and 161 blocks totaling 4,000,000 acres in Wyoming. Information about other states was not given. Fourteen unit agreements were approved by the Department of the Interior, as compared with 13 in 1943. The 1944 agreements were all in Wyoming.
