ALUMINUM alloys containing magnesium and silicon are susceptible to strengthening and hardening by suitable heat-treatments, and they constitute a class of alloys of considerable commercial importance. Generally, they contain these two elements in the proportions required for the formation of the intermetallic compound Mg2Si, or an excess of silicon; no commercial wrought alloys are made with an appreciable excess of magnesium. The reason for not having excess magnesium is obvious from the results given in this paper, since it is shown that excess magnesium results in a proportional decrease in the solubility of Mg2Si. This is the eighteenth1 of a series of papers from the Aluminum Research Laboratories dealing with the equilibrium relations in aluminum-alloy systems; most of the previous publications concerned binary aluminum-alloy systems; this is the fourth of a group pertaining to ternary aluminum-alloy systems. The work on this system was com-pleted in 1930, but the results were not published because of the pressure of other work. Hanson and Gaylor2, in 1921, presented the results of an extensive investigation of the aluminum-magnesium-silicon system. Their results indicated that an excess of magnesium over the amount required to form the compound Mg2Si caused a noticeable decrease in the solid solubility of Mg2Si in aluminum. A more recent investigation3 in these laboratories showed that the solid solubility of Mg2Si in aluminum was 1.85 per cent at 595° C. and decreased to 0.30 per cent at 300° C. The results of the latter investigation were used as the basis for the present work.

Occurrences and associations of natural tellurides are constrained by the relative fugacities of Te, in specific mineralizing environments. Some are rare (e.g., FeTe2) and others absent (e.g. MoTe , ZnTe) m nature because high f-Te2/f-S2 ratios are rare or unattainable , whereas others (e. g . , Ag2Te,HgTe) require lower ratios and are common. Complex and seemingly chaotic sulfide-telluride associations are, in fact, highly systematic and depend both on temperature and fugacity ratios. Some older sulfides act as buffers via reactions such as PbS + Te2 = PbTe + S2, thereby affecting the deposition and paragenesis of younger tellurides and the combined or uncombined mode of occurrence of precious metals. Thermochemical calculations of telluride-sulfide-oxide equilibria can have pragmatic value. The thermochemical approach tells us little about the Te "source", but is beginning to unravel the systematics of telluride mineralogy and controls at the precipitational end of the line.

SOME of the reactions and procedures upon which modern techniques in the production of metal powders are based were used for 2000 years by the ancients to reduce iron and other metals from their ores. Despite this, however, the art of powder metallurgy is relatively new and probably stems from the introduction of incandescent electric lamp filaments. Attempts to improve upon Edison's carbon filaments led to the production, in order. of metallic filaments of osmium. tantalum.. and finally of tungsten, which ha, replaced the others and is the commercial product of today. These metallic filaments were originally manufactured by the extrusion and sintering of a mixture of the metal or its oxide with a reducing agent which also served as a binder. The effect of alkali sulfates in promoting the sul-fation of nickel and copper in a bulk sulfide flota -tion concentrate by fluidized bed roasting has been studied in the laboratory, and it was shown that the various alkali sulfates promote sulfation to approximately the same extent. The sulfation of a mixture of synthetically prepared iron and nickel oxide and of nickel ferrite has also been studied. Nickel sulfation was promoted by high ratios of Fe:Ni and by the presence of sodium sulfate. THE work described in this paper was a continuation of earlier studies into the role of alkali sulfates in promoting the sulfation roasting of nickel sulfides1,2 in an endeavor to determine how the system was affected by the presence of compounds of iron and copper. The earlier work1 showed that, in the sulfation of NiO at 680°C, the reaction was limited by the formation of an impermeable film of nickel sulfate on the oxide surface. The relative effect of the various alkali sulfates in promoting nickel sulfation varied in the order: Li > Na >Cs > Rb > K A study of alkali sulfate/ nickel sulfate interactions at high temperatures showed that the promoting action was due to the fact that the nickel sulfate product layer sintered and agglomerated only when the more active additives were present. This resulted in the formation of discontinuities in the nickel sulfate layer so that diffusion of the sulfating gases to the NiO surface was no longer impeded and the reaction could proceed to completion. A similar explanation was used for the observation that sodium and lithium sulfates promote the oxidation of NiS to NiO at temperatures below 750°C since small amounts of nickel sulfate were formed during oxidation.2 It was of interest to study the effect of alkali sulfates on the sulfate roasting of a sulfide flotation concentrate which is typical of material treated commercially. In order to control temperature it is essential to roast sulfides in a fluidized bed and this technique was therefore used, although the batchwise operation of a small-scale laboratory reactor does not reproduce all conditions which prevail in full-scale continuous plant. The results obtained are therefore only comparative, and cannot be used for predicting the optimum conditions for metal extraction. The sulfation of synthetically prepared mixed oxides of nickel + copper and nickel + iron and of nickel ferrite was also studied to evaluate the relative effects of alkali sulfates with more complex systems. SULFATION ROASTING OF A SULFIDE FLOTATION CONCENTRATE The bulk sulfide flotation concentrate used in this work contained 7.92 pct Ni, 1.74 pct Cu, 35.66 pct Fe, and 31.28 pct S. The sulfide minerals present in order of abundance were pyrrhotite FeS, pyrite FeS2, pentlandite (FeNi)S, and chalcopyrite CuFeS2. Two samples described as coarse and fine were used. The coarse sample, which was a flotation concentrate (58 pct plus 300 mesh), was ground to 100 pct minus 350 mesh to produce the fine sample. Before roasting, the sample of sulfide concentrate was agglomerated by wetting witli a solution of the alkali sulfate (or water), thoroughly mixing, and drying at 110°C. This gave a cake which was gently crushed and screened, the -18 +100 mesh fraction being used for fluidized bed roasting. A similar-size fraction had been used by the authors in pilot plant work with a 4-in.-diam fluidized bed reactor.' In this work it was found that the molar ratio of additive to the total iron + nickel + copper content of the sulfide sample should be adjusted to a value of approximately 0.06, as this was the optimum amount necessary for nickel sulfation. Experimental. The fluidized bed reactor consisted of a quartz tube approximately 60 cm long and 30 mm in diameter resting in a vertical tube furnace. The sulfide bed (30 g) was supported on a bed of -4 +12 mesh quartz particles 3 cm high, which rested on a sintered quartz disc welded to the tube. The temperature of the furnace was controlled with a variable transformer to give a final bed temperature of 680°C. The bed was fluidized with air or mixtures of air + 10 pct v/v SO2, at a total apparent gas velocity of 60 to 65 cm per sec at 680°C. The aim of instruction in a metallurgical laboratory is to make real the principles on which metallurgical processes and operations are based, and to foster the spirit of investigation. The materials with which experiments are carried out are ores, metals, and metallic compounds. The method varies with the end sought. A class may work as a whole, each member contributing his share to the solution of a problem, or the students may carry on investigations independently; the former exemplifies class-research; the latter, individual research. It is with a branch of the former, with special reference to ore-treatment, that the present paper deals. In smelting an ore by a well-established process, the result is shown by analyzing the products to see whether their compositions correspond to those calculated in making up the charge; by taking account of stock to show the distribution of metal in the different products made and the losses from dust and volatilization; by casting a thermal balance to find the distribution and losses of heat; and by making a cost-sheet to ascertain, as far as possible, the necessary outlay of money. In lixiviation and amalgamation, the mode of operating has to be varied to adapt a process to the individual ore. Here a number of tests become necessary. Each will consist of a series of experiments with one variable, in order to find the conditions under which the variable gives the best result; a summary of several tests will give the best method of operating. Working a number of charges with the best method will furnish the data desired for ascertaining the recovery of metal,

A study of the effect of various corrosive waters on five different types of cements indicated that those cements containing less than 5 per cent tricalcium aluminate were the most resistant to corrosion. INTRODUCTION Oil field experience indicates that some formation waters are excessively corrosive to some cements. A study has been made to determine the most corrosive waters and the relative resistance of various types of cement to these corrosive waters. PROCEDURE This study of the corrosion of cement was limited to an evaluation of the effect of various corrosive waters on five different types of cements. A determination was made of the types of cements which offer the greatest resistance to corrosion and of the chemical contents of waters found to be the most destructive to cements. The laboratory tests were conducted by immersing small cylinders of 20 samples of set cement in various corrosive waters. The initial mixing of most of the cement slurries was done using Tulsa tap water as the mixing water; however, a few of the slurries were mixed using a sulfate water as the mixing water. When the 20 samples had been immersed for a period of nine months, they were removed from their corrosive baths, inspected and photographed. The field tests were conducted by placing ten cement specimens, each contained in a screen wire thimble, in the gas anchors of insert pumps in wells in six different fields. The specimens were observed whenever it was necessary to pull the pumps and were returned to the 1aboratory when deterioration had reached a serious state. EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS In both the field and laboratory tests the resistance of the different cements to corrosion was determined by the condition of the samples and the number of samples of each that were in good condition at the end of the immersion period. Table I lists the various cements tested in the order of their resistance to corrosion with the most resistant at the top and the least resistance at the bottom. An analysis of Table I reveals that the upper half of the table predominates in slow set and sulphate resisting cement.: (low 3CAO.A12O3 content) while in the lower half the port-land and high early strength cements are in the majority. Of the last two the high early strength cements appear to offer less resistance to sulfate water corrosion. An investigation of the composition of the cements listed in Table I indicated that as a general rule the cements containing less than five per cent tricalcium aluminate will exhibit the greatest resistance to corrosion. The destructive action of various corrosive waters was compared by listing the waters in the order of those containing the largest number of samples that failed completely. These ratings are presented in Table II with the most corrosive waters listed first and the least corrosive last. Figs. 1 and 2 show the end views of cement samples which had been immersed in the baths of five per cent MgSO, water and the five per cent Na2SO4 water respectively in the laboratory. These .pictures are representative of the results obtained and present a pictorial evaluation of the corrosive resistance of various types of cements.

W. M. Bertholf—This is an excellent report of a well-conducted investigation, of sufficient scope to provide generally useful information. Some years ago we had occasion to test the Humphreys spiral on the middling from our table plant. The conclusions reached in this investigation come as no surprise to us. In certain applications it is virtually impossible to improve on the spiral from the monetary returns point of view even though its "efficiency" may be low. We have noted that in all successful applications of the spiral the feed is "classified," hence we were somewhat disappointed in the showing the spiral made on the Poplar Ridge coal, the only one of the four which could really be considered the equivalent of a classified feed. As was noted in the paper, however, this coal contained a considerable amount of middle and high-gravity material, apparently more than enough to make up for the theoretical advantage of small particles in these categories. Examination of figs. 3, 6, 7, and 8 reveals a general similarity of behavior for all coals except Black Eagle. Would the authors care to speculate on the reasons for the difference in the distribution curve for the sink 1.60 material in the washed coal of fig. 3 as compared to the others? This difference is particularly noticeable in the 8xl4-mesh size. Was there a "shape effect"? J. D. Price and W. M. Bertholf—The performance data on three of the coals studied appear to be typical, but there are certain departures from the general pattern in the case of the Poplar Ridge coal which are large enough to deserve special consideration. AT the Tulsa meeting of the A. P. I., the following reso-lutions, expressive of the policy of that organization, were among those adopted: RESOLVED, That we endorse the conclusion of the Federal Oil Conservation Board in its report of September, 1926, that the prevention of the waste of gas incident to the pro-duction of oil is of paramount importance in the conserva-tion and economical production of oil, and the president of the Institute is requested to appoint a committee of seven to devise and suggest to this board, or the executive com-mittee, such measures as will enable the industry, while continuing to meet the consumption requirements for pe-troleum and its products, to conserve in its natural state such reserves of petroleum as may not then be required for consumption. RESOLVED, That the president of the Institute appoint a committee of seven to formulate and recommend to this board or its executive committee, at the earliest practicable date, a program of legislation; Federal and State, to be advocated by the Institute giving sanction and effect to agreements by oil producers for the curtailment of produc-tion in pools where and during periods when there is over-production, having for their purpose the economical and orderly production of oil.

Tmzsile tests were performed on Armco iron samples, at various ternpe.ralures and strain rates, ocer a wide range of grain sizes. Analysis of the data suggests that the plot of the lower yield stress, against d-1/2,where 2d is the acerage grain diameter, is not linear (as is often assumed) but is concave toward the d. axis over the range of d-from 7 to 53 . The different values of the parameters obtained by other workers can be explained, in part at least, by the observed curvature. This curvalure is shown to be consistent with a model of yielding based on dislocation pile-ups; however, the values of obtained by fitting our data to this model differ appreciably from the values generally reported. The equation proposed by Cottrell, viz.: is a plausible empirical fit to the experimental results. The purpose of this paper is to comment on the validity of the widely used linear relationship first proposed by all' and Petch and coworkers2"4 between ay, the lower yield stress, and 2d, the average grain diameter, for bcc metals, viz.: Many workers, see Refs. 2 to 7 and Table 11, have fitted this equation to their experimental results and have obtained acceptable fits over the relatively narrow range of grain sizes used by most of them. Indeed, in some cases, so few data points were available that any more sophisticated fit would have been irrational. In most of the interpretations,'-' oi is thought to be a measure of the friction stress accompanying dislocation movement, and ky was originally inter- preted as a measure of the dislocation locking but is now believed by Cottrell" to be a function of the dislocation creation rate. In the "unpinning" theories, k, is equated to where od is the unpinning stress and 1 is the average distance from the boundary of the grain where yielding is taking place to the nearest dislocation source in an unyielded grain. Other considerations (see, for example, Refs. 11 and 12) lead to equations with a similar form to [I] where different meanings may be attributed to the parameters. While there are doubts as to the physical significance of the parameters i and k, they continue to be used by many workers; interpretations of the variations in the behavior of ferrite materials following certain treatments, e.g., aging,'3 neutron irradiation,14 have been given frequently in terms of these parameters. Some theories of the mechanical behavior of bcc metals are based on this relationship. We have investigated experimentally the oy - d-'lZ relationship for Armco iron over a wider range of grain sizes and with more data points than those given in published results. The analysis of our data suggests that the oy—d-'" relationship is not linear but is in fact concave towards the d-'I2 axis. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION The experimental work was carried out on 3-mm-diam Armco iron rods which were prepared by wire drawing from 5-mm-diam rods. By annealing in vacuum at temperatures between 7000 and 1200°C for various times, grain sizes from 7 to 20,000 grains per sq mm were obtained, the grains in all cases being regularly shaped. Grain sizes were measured by lineal interceptand by area methods; only specimens with Amax/A values of 3 to 6 were used in the Petch-Hall plots (where A is the average area of a grain and Amax is the area of the largest grain observed). For all the specimens used, the number of grains in a cross section exceeded 50, which should be adequate to avoid grain size effects.'= Tensile tests were performed at 296", 219, and 17l°K, using

Even as the rational selection of excavation equipment requires a matching of machine performance capabilities to rock response characteristics, the functional features of transportation systems must be matched to the characteristics of the materials handled in order to secure optimum, trouble-free operation. In particular, ore passes and chutes must be designed for flow in order to insure controlled draw whenever a chute is opened. The alternative to quantitative design is, of course, the well known ad hoc procedure of freeing plugged ore passes, cleaning up spillage from flooded chutes, etc., after installation of the system. Since the voluminous empirical work sporadically undertaken through the years evidently had not led to reliable design methodology, it seemed worthwhile to attempt a rational and complete description of the movement of material through ore passes. The concepts of de- formable body mechanics applicable to gravity-induced flows of granular media or "soils" were involved. Accordingly, the mathematical theory of soil plasticity was adopted as a working hypothesis, and a two-dimensional laboratory model of an ore pass constructed in order to investigate the appropriateness of the theory. The general experimental strategy consisted of formulating the movement of material in ore passes as a boundary value problem in soil plasticity, determining the required boundary values of stress and velocity experimentally, and then using these data for the initiation of a theoretical solution for stress and velocity throughout the moving mass of material. A comparison between the theoretical and experimental constituted the test of the original hypothesis.

Measurements of the heat effects on addition of various solid phases of InSb to a solution calorimeter have confirmed the existence of a new high-pressure plzase InSbQII), which was jormed at 37 kbar and 623°K. The heats of formation of InSbQ), InSbfl), and InSb(111) have been measured and the heats of transjormation of InSb(1) to InSb(1l) and InSb(Iii) and of 'InSb(ll) to InSb(iiI) at atmospheric pressure and 78°K have been determined independently. Other thermodynamic properties of these phases, the phase boundary InSb(i)/InSb(ll), and the relative positions of the triple points are calculated. The pressure-Dolume term is shown to be more critical than the internal energy difference in making the phase InSbQ) less stable than InSb(II) at high pressures. Observations on partially transformed specimens suggest that the transformation of' metastable InSb (III) takes place in the two steps InSb(lll) — InSbQI) and InSbQI) — InSb(l). The compound InSb can exist as several phases depending on the temperature and pressure. The phase InSb(I), which is a semiconductor having the zinc-blende structure, transforms into the phase InSb(11) at a pressure of about 23 kbar and room temperature.'-3 The phase InSb(II) has the 6 tin structure,4-6 is metallic, and becomes a superconductor below 2.lok7 An orthorhombic phase of InSb has been reported to occur above a pressure of approximately 30 kbar at room temperature.' This phase is also a superconductor below about 3.4k9 The phase InSb(I1) is retained at atmospheric pressure if it is quenched to 78°K under pressure,6,7 but tends to transform at higher temperatures and does so explosively above approximately 210ok,7 A value of the heat of transformation of InSb(1) to InSb(II) at 210°K and atmospheric pressure has been reported.' A concurrent publication'0 reports evidence for a new solid phase InSb(III), which was formed by annealing InSb above 58 1°K at 37 kbar, above 560°K at 52 kbar, and above 473°K at 65 kbar. Specimens of InSb(II1) had a superconducting transition temperature of 4.lo ± 0.1oK. X-ray diffraction patterns also indicated the presence of a new phase. In this communication, thermodynamic properties of the phases InSb(I), InSb(II), and InSb(II1) are reported and discussed. The phase boundary InSb(I)/InSb(II) and the relative positions of the triple points are calculated. 1) EXPERIMENTAL 1.1) Preparation of Specimens. Specimens of the high-pressure phases of InSb were prepared in a belt-type high-pressure chamber by a tichnique described in detail elsewhere.'' Charges of 0.6 to 0.8 g of Cominco semiconductor grade InSb were used. The temperatures were measured with a chromel-alumel thermocouple, the hot junction of which was within 0.5 mm of the specimen. The specimens were heated under a pressure of 37 kbar for 1 hr at 723°K (which is well above the liquidus) and quenched to room temperature. One set was annealed at 523°K and another set at 623°K for 20 to 24 hr. These annealing temperatures were chosen because 523°K was below and 623°K was above the temperature of the transformation of InSb(II) to InSb(1Tl) at 37 kbar.10 The specimens were then cooled to 125°K by passing liquid nitrogen through the jacket of the belt die before the

Charts for predicting the pressure to which natural gases may be expanded without hydrate formation have been prepared for gases of even gravity. Pressure-temperature curves for hydrate formation were established for gases having gravities from 0.6 to 1.0. These curves and the thermal behavior of the gases during free and adiabatic expansion were used to prepare the charts for estimating the permissible expansion of natural gases without hydrate formation. The problem was solved by L. F, Albright, W. T. Boyd, J. J. McKetta, G. Martin, P. Poettman. and A. P. Snyder.-, who are first-year graduate students in the department of Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering at the University of Michigan. This paper is essentially a summary of their results. Prediction of Conditions for Hydrate Formation in Natural Gases Each natural gas under a given pressure will form solid hydrates at a corresponding temperature provided sufficient water is present.1-5 The temperature of natural gases below about 5000 lb. per sq. in. decreases when the gases are expanded freely.6,7 This decrease in temperature may cause the expanding gas to enter the region of temperature and pressure at which hydrates will form' The final pressure to which a natural gas may 'be expanded without hydrate formation depends upon the initial temperature and pressure and the gas composition. This paper presents charts that give the final pressures to which gases of gravity 0.6 to 1.0 at given initial temperatures and pressures may be expanded without formation of hydrate. Hydrate-forming Temperatures and Pressures as a Function OF Gas -Gravity Experimental data of pressure versus temperature at which solid hydrate will form, provided sufficient water is present, are available for a series of gases.2,3 A method of predicting the pressure-temperature curve for a given gas composition has been reported.' The solution to this problem requires that these curves relating pressure to temperature be established for gases of given gravities.

SOME time ago,, a prominent engineer asked a representative of the firebrick industry to prepare a comprehensive paper on blast-furnace refractories. It was to have been the purpose of this paper to gather practical experiences from widely different sources, in the hope of determining what kind or kinds of firebrick were best adapted for certain uses. This engineer sent questionnaires to the large consumers of blast-furnace linings and stovebrick and received very detailed replies as to their experiences. These replies are conflicting, but, having been turned over to the writer, form the basis of this attempt to meet the request. Because of the impossibility of making final recommendations at this time, a few of the more interesting and commonly known methods of studying refractories are also discussed, as well as the more recent developments in this field. The first reply to, the questionnaire stated that good service was being secured from the linings. This satisfactory condition was attributed to the use of a very good distributor. The writer believed that manufacturers try to and do produce a good product and that the proper handling of equipment is of the utmost importance, if good results are to be secured. The type of bricks used was not mentioned. The second reply stated that good life was secured from the furnace linings, but that the writer had had soft-fired stovebrick crumble and, for that reason, preferred a hard-fired product for use in this position. The type of bricks used was not mentioned. The third reply stated that firebrick had crumbled from the mantle up; the cause was not known. The fourth reply stated that the stove linings were satisfactory. Hand-made furnace linings failed after 4 years' service so a steam-pressed lining was installed which was still good after 4 years of service. Consequently, a second steam-pressed lining was installed but this disintegrated at the top after the furnace had been in- blast 7 months. The firebrick manufacturer attributed this failure to the expansion of iron blocks that had been installed at the stock line to prevent erosion.

The Mile Six pool is located on the La Brea-Parinas Cullcession of International Petroleum Co., Ltd., in northwestern Peru on the west coast of South America. The reservoir pressure in this pool has been maintained within 200 psi of its initial value throughout its history, and gravity drainage has played an important role in the production behavior. It has now produced 95 per cent of its estimated ultimate recovery. It is estimated that this interesting oil pool will ultimately produce 67 per cent of the initial oil in place and that the resulting residual oil saturation may be as low as 19 per cent of the pore volume (29 per cent of the hydrocarbon pore volume). An evaluation of reservoir rock and fluid characteristics and ultimate oil recovery is presented. INTRODUCTION This study of Mile Six pool was made to evaluate its performance according to latest available information. The production performance of this pool has been discussed in various articles in the past. and the reported behavior has been used as an example for application of computation procedures for gravity drainage depletion' and as an illustration of field behavior under gravity drainage or expanding gas cap drive. There have been wide variations in reported values of initial oil in place, reservoir oil volume factor. connate-water sauration, volume of effective sand, and ultimate recovery because of the paucity of reliable basic data. These various factors have been determined as accurately as practicable with the latest available information, and this evaluation is presented herein. The production history of Mile Six is an excellent example of gravity drainage depleion with effective pressure maintenance by gar injection. GENERAL Mile Six pool was discovered by cable-tool drilling in November. 1927. when well 1996 was completed in the Parinas sand. After slow development with cable tools and sporadic production. the pool was opened to continuous pro(iuction in November. 1933. and develpment was completed with rotary rigs. Pressure maintenance was started in December, 1933. by returning gas to upstructure wells. Most of the development was 'completed by 1937, but some additional wells were drilled in the period 1939-1947. and several old wells were deepened. A total of 46 oil and gas wells and 4 dry holes were drilled on approximately 7-acre spacing. Of the producers. 21 are now flowing. 2 are pumping. 44 are gas input wells. 3 are abandoned. I is a gas well shut in. and 15 are shut in because of non-commercial production or high gas-oil ratio. The locations of all wells are shown on the map of Fig. I. Total oil production on Dec. 31. 1952, was 30,867,373 bbl: cumulative gas production was 22,023,777 Mcf; and 26,410,946 Mcf of gas had been returned to the reservoir. These figures do not include oil and gas lost ill a blowout in January. 1940. GEOLOGICAL DESCRIPTION Mile Six pool is located on the northern end of a structural spur projecting from the La Brea-Negritos uplift.' The spur is probably a reflection of a basement structure. It plunges gently to the north, i broken into a complex series of fault blocks. and contain.; the Verdun Alto. Section Sixteen. and Mile Six pools. The Parinas handstone (lower Eocene!. which is the producing formation in Mile Six. occurs at an average depth of 2,200 ft in the pool and dips north and east at from 15' to 20". The pool covers an area of approximately 350 acres. Mile Six is downfaulted about 600 ft from Section Sixteen pool to the soutb. and a major fault forms its western boundarv. The north and east boundaries are formed by the intersection of the sand top with the water-oil contact which occurs at approximately 2.440 ft subsea. An original gas-oil contact probably existed at about 1.875 ft subsea. Fig. 1 presents the latest structural interpretation of the pool. and Fig. 2 is an isopach map showing thickness of the total Parinas formation above the original water-oil contact. The heavy lints of Fig. 1 are contours on the sand top, and the fine lines are contours on the fault planes. This type of straight-line structural map was developed 1)) International's geologists to reflect structural conditions where the bedding planes dip and have no curvature. 'The La Brea-Parinas Concession is highly faulted by normal fault.. The beds are flat wherever exposed. The Parinas formation is approximately 635 ft thick. and it is etimated that 62 percent II the formation is effective sand. The original oil zone was about 565 ft thick. Fig. 211 presents an electric log showing typical Parinas sand development ill Mile Six pool. The Parinas band in Mile Six i. a well-sorted. medium- to-coal-se-grained. cross-bedded sand with minor lenses of shale and small lenses and pockets of pebble conglomerate. The sand grains are subangular to rounded and consist chiefly of quartz with feldspars. biotite hornblende, and augite as accessory minerals. Because of faulting of the Parinas- formation to the east and north of the pool. there is probably l possibility of a significant, natural water drive in Mile six. The faults within the pool. as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2. are of smaller disI,laceInent and seem to act only , partial barriers to fluid movement within the reservoir. RESERVOIR CHARACTERISTICS Core analysis data are available from five wells. The data were obtained from three wells (Nos. 3401. 3586 and 3719) at the time of their completion and from well 1996 when the original liner was sidetracked and the well was deepened ill 1946. Data from well 2779 were obtained in 1943 from old cores taken when the well was deepened in 1934. From these core analyses. the average porosity was estimated to be 22.6 per cent. and the average permeability to dry ail. was estimated to be 780 and Measured productility indices varied from 3.1 to 71.4 B/D per psi differential. Specific productivity indices varied approximately from 0.1 to 0.3 B./D per psi per ft of sand.

In order to understand the effect of zirconium on properties of Ti-Cu-A1 alloys, Ti-Zr alloys were examined for the presence of ordering or compounds at the following compositions in weight percent: 24.1 pct Zr (lZr:GTi), 32.2 pct Zr (lZr:4Ti), 38.8 pct Zr (lZr:3Ti), 49.0 pct Zr(1Zr:ZTi). Alloys were prepared as 15-g buttons by non- consumable arc melting under argon atmosphere from Bureau of Mines titanium (Bhn 63) and Reactor Grade zirconium (Bhn 150). Weight losses during melting did not exceed 1 pct of the initial button weight. Prior to heat treatment, buttons were hot-rolled at 600" to 700°C to rods of about 6 mm diam. Contamination after hot-rolling was found to extend to a depth of less than 0.5 mm. Specimens for heat treatment were wrapped in molybdenum sheet, annealed in argon-filled quartz capsules, and quenched by breaking the capsules under iced brine. Annealing times were as follows: 700°C — 7 days; 600°C— 14 days; 575°C-1 and 2 months; 525°C-2 months; 500°C-2 months. Prior to heat treatment, all Ti-Zr alloys were vacuum annealed at 900°C to remove hydrogen. The reanneal of 575°C specimens for an additional month produced no observable microstructure changes. The results obtained by microstructure and X-ray diffraction are shown in Fig. 1, together with data of Hayes et al.' No other phases than a or P were found. Small amounts of retained P were detected by X-ray in the 49 pct Zr alloy. The data of the present investigation suggests that ß and a transus boundaries are at considerably lower temperatures than those of Hayes et al. CARL SCHOLZ, Chicago, Ill.-Mr. Young was kind enough to' allude to the development of a mine in which I am now engaged. Several months ago the Burlington Railroad decided to open a mine in the field Which they own in Franklin County containing some 15,000 acres .(6070 ha.) of coal, ranging in thickness from 8 to 12 ft. (2 to 3.6 m.). This proposition in itself is attractive to any mining engineer, but with the backing of a large company I saw an opportunity to do some novel work in the construction line, and for several months I have been investigating and working on the problem of developing what I hope will be the largest and best equipped mine in the State of Illinois. The shaft will be sunk at a place where the coal lies at a depth of 600 ft. (182 m.) and conditions both of the surface and of the coal are ideal in every way; the seam is almost level, and we had only 7 ft. (2 m.) of surface clay to go through. We are going to hoist by skips in order to reduce the rope speed. I believe that is a long step in the direction of economy, because we not only double the output of the mine by hoisting the contents of two cars atone time, but we reduce the proportion of dead weight. In our case there will be 20 tons of coal and 18,000 lb. of skip, or 55 per cent. net and 45 per cent. tare. That, of course, necessitates less than half the rope speed for the same tonnage, and we all know that speed means power and power means cost. Skip hoisting permits the use of solid-end gate cars, which is an advantage. The cost of these cars will be in the neighborhood of $250 apiece; They are well built, with roller-bearing wheels of the most up-to-date type, spring draw-bars, and refinements of-that character which are necessary to move the loads most advantageously.
