THE primary purpose of the loading plant is to transfer the finished product from the preparation machines to the railroad car, truck, or barge in which it is to go to market. Secondary purposes of the loading plant are: to prevent excessive degradation of sizes during loading, to reduce segregation as much as possible, and to prevent excessive quantities of very good or off-grade coal from entering any one car. Nonuniformity of consignments is one of the chief sources of com- plaints by consumers and coal merchants. A properly designed loading plant will do much to reduce complaints and ensure uniformity, not only from shipment to shipment but also in each individual consignment along the length of the car and in cross section. DEGRADATION IN STORAGE, LOADING AND SHIPMENT The object in loading is not only to handle the coal without breakage and segregation, but also to produce a well-trimmed load that will ride to its destination without spillage or breakage en route. The small sizes present in a car of prepared coal as received by the purchaser consist-of: missed small sizes not screened out in the preparation plant, breakage during loading, and breakage caused by handling en route. For domestic sizes of anthracite shipped from the Pennsylvania anthracite field to Atlantic coast cities, the dealers' lass because of breakage in loading and shipment amounts to from 2 to 5 per cent and for anthracite shipped to Middle West cities, the loss is 8 to 9 per cent. This difference is in part because dealers in the Middle West rescreen their coal more thoroughly than is usual in the East. One dealer handling Illinois No. 6 coal shipped from southern Illinois mines to Chicago reports an average size loss of 10 per cent when lump coal is unloaded with a fork. This runs as low as 5 per cent for carefully loaded coal and as high as 15 per cent for carelessly loaded coal.

Fire-brick stoves have become a necessary part of the modern coke blast-furnace equipment, and are also superseding the cast-iron pipe stoves in anthracite- and charcoal-furnaces. The brick stoves in general use are of either the Cowper or Whitwell type, or modifications of these bearing the names of those who invented the alterations from the original types rather than any real departure from then]. All these stoves have approximately the same valve-equipment and follow the same line of operation. The waste gas from the furnace enters at one port and burns in a single combustion-chamber, and the heated products are drawn through the various passe; in the brickwork to a stack of proper height to create the necessary draught. The last passes of these stoves receive a very small percentage of the heat from the gas, owing to their extreme distance from the combustion-chamber; and this chamber also suffers great deterioration in the attempt to force the heat into the farthest passes. At best, about 70 per cent. of the heat taken up is held in the combustion-chamher and the first down-pass of the Whitwell stoves. Mr. Hugh Kennedy, Manager of the Isabella Furnaces, Pittsburgh, Pa., who has had a large experience with the fire-brick hotblast stoves, was so strongly impressed with the fact that but about thirty per cent of the brick of the average stove were doing proper duty as heat-agents, that, after careful study and experiment, he had three 20- by 60-feet stoves constructed with a view of more uniformly heating all the brick. In these the general lines of the Whitwell stove are followed, with the blast-connections unaltered, but gas is introduced at the bottom of each pass, and outlets are provided at the top, so that the gases have a direct natural draught in each pass and the highest heats are obtained at the bottom instead of the top. The natural tendency being toward the reverse condition, the brickwork soon acquires an almost uniform temperature.

THE 140th meeting of the Institute will be held in the Engineering societies Building, 'New York, Feb.: 16-19, and one of the most important features, one which cannot be reduced to text in the TRANSACTIONS, will be the opportunity to renew old friendships and make new friends, to talk things over -to orient one's self in these troublous .times. There will be daily get-together luncheons for all, luncheons and dinners for specialized groups, an informal dance, the annual reception and banquet, and a smoker. And such a smoker! It starts with dinner at .dinnertime, shows signs of cabaret, turns smoker, and then goes entertainment-all for the price of one. This year one can stay long after 11 o'clock-there will be time and opportunity to amble around and meet everyone present. The formal program is rapidly rounding into shape. The annual business meeting will -be held on Tuesday morning and the banquet will be at the Commodore. The four Divisions and the various, Technical Committees are arranging their sessions. and scheduling for these a long list of significant papers. A .feature of the meeting will be a number of round tables on timely subjects.

One of the practical questions presented to the blast-furnace manager, with regard to which little help can be obtained from existing technical literature, is the manner of filling and blowing-in. This operation is often performed according, more or less, to traditions which have come down from earlier practice, and which, if not positively detrimental when followed with the large modern furnace, may at least be greatly improved, just as the running of the furnace itself, while in blast, has been improved. It is not necessary, as many of the old furnace-men believed, to make a lot of white or silver-gray iron at the start, or to spend many weeks, or months even, in bringing the furnace to its normal burden. It has seemed to me that the publication of carefully-recorded data of practice on this point may be interesting to the members of the Institute engaged in the management of blast-furnaces. The enlarged blast-furnace at the Durham Iron Works, Riegelsville, Pa., owned by Messrs. Cooper & Hewitt, of New York City, was first put in blast February 21, 1876, since which time it has made seven blasts, and is now running on the eighth. A description of the furnace-plant, together with a record of the fifth blast, was given in my paper read at the Chattanooga meeting, May, 1885 (Transactions, xiv., 130). After some of the early blasts the furnace-lines underwent considerable change, and I have thought best to accompany this paper with drawings showing the lines and the tuyere-arrangement (see Plates I. and II.), and to give also the following summary of the conditions and results of each blast. During the first and second blasts no coke was used, and the furnace ran very irregularly, showing a constant tendency to scaffold, which was attributed, in great part, to the small hearth and other defective lines. The large proportion of air required at this furnace is accounted for by the fact that the engines are defective, and do not deliver into the furnace the amount of air indicated by the pistondisplacement.

THE country rock of the Mavrovouni mine of the Cyprus Mines Corp. is hydrothermally altered, disintegrated pillow lava, with very little tensile strength ("short" ground). In places, especially when wet, it is heavy ground, though not extremely heavy except where movement has been caused by underlying or nearby stoping operations. Damage by caving from roof or sides of galleries is not sudden but progressively faster when the size of the cave increases as a result of the fall of small pieces. CEMENT AND CONCRETE LININGS During early operations, galleries in the country rock were supported by customary mine-timbering methods. Available timber, however, was of poor quality and of relatively high price, and replacements were frequent and expensive. Furthermore, the massive sulphide ore bodies required large volumes of fresh air for ventilation and cooling, and it was therefore desirable to provide smooth-lined galleries with low resistance for the introduction of air to the ore bodies. It was also desirable to eliminate hazards of fire in shafts and underground workings insofar as this would be practical. Cement and concrete were relatively cheap, and plans for using these in support of shafts, underground galleries, raises, and chutes, were developed steadily. Circular shafts with diameters ranging from 10 to 15 ft were adopted for all permanent shafts and airways. In places these were lined with concrete poured behind sectional pressed-steel forms especially constructed for this purpose. In other places, they were lined with precast-concrete blocks. It was found that such precast concrete of good quality could be produced on mass production scale and delivered at the mine from most favorable point of manufacture, at a cost of about 25 cents per cubic foot of concrete. This refers to prewar costs. As the use of concrete blocks in circular lined galleries was developed, it was found that there were very great advantages in the reduction of air resistance as compared with customary timber supports. After best methods had been developed, it was found that breakage and replacements were extraordinarily low, averaging only about 1 ½ pct per year during a period of about 15 years. Furthermore, it has been possible to reclaim for re-use a very large percentage of the concrete blocks from abandoned galleries. During the history of the operations precast-concrete blocks have been used for lining shafts, raises, ore chutes, galleries, and shaft stations, ranging from 3 to 16 ft id. The thickness of lining has varied from 5 to 10 in.; with I2 in. thickness in a few cases. Junctions of two galleries at angles ranging from about 30 to 60° are usually made of poured concrete behind sectional forms, or of a combination of poured concrete and precast blocks. By comparing two longwall operations, one begun in 1956 and the other in 1960, the author is able to demonstrate the increases in production and performance made possible by longwall mining. These achievements have been brought about by continuous development of longwall mining equipment and associated roof supports. Because of this progress, longwall mining is able to provide, under proper conditions, high production per man-shift, remarkable cost savings, dependable roof control, safe working conditions and truly continuous production. It may seem odd that the title of this paper is not simply "Longwall Mining" but instead "Progress in Longwall Mining." However, the word "Progress" definitely has its place in longwall mining. If it had not been for progress in the development of longwall mining equipment and roof supports, the longwall mining method would not be able to compete in production and performance with modem coal mining machines. The longwall mining method was practiced at the beginning of the century and there were several successful operations in coal fields in Illinois. In those early days of longwall mining, the coal was undercut by hand 2 to 2.5 ft at the bottom of the seam and packwalls were built in the gob to support the roof. The roof eventually subsided and the weight of the subsiding roof was used to ride the face and break the undercut coal. Utilizing natural weight to soften the coal face is still practiced in modern longwall mining; however, the packwalling method has been replaced by the caving method and the roof is now supported by yielding steel roof supports and forepoling steel headers. The purpose of these yielding-type roof supports is to provide a safe working area for the crew along the entire longwall face, to permit continuous mechanical mining across the prop free face, and to provide a strong resistance for the roof by forming an even breaking line at the gob for the roof to cave. Roof supports and associated forepoling headers should be kept as close as possible to the face in order to prevent a caving between face and supports, especially under friable roof. This means that the coal should be extracted in small slices, allowing only a narrow roof area to be exposed and unsupported. The coal planer with its relatively high cutting velocity of 75 ft per min provides such an extraction of coal and has proved its high performance under difficult mining conditions. Since 1951, several longwall faces in southem West Virginia and Pennsylvania which have been equipped with the coal planer and friction-type manual roof supports have been successfully operated. Compared to today's longwall mining, these longwall faces required such a large crew, primarily to handle the roof supports, that the actual high production per shift was charged with too high a labor cost, thereby decreasing the tons per man. Yet, even then the longwall faces outperformed the conventional mining system under the same conditions. In order to demonstrate the progress that has been made in the development of longwall mining, a comparison will be made between a longwall face in Arkansas which was installed in 1956 and a modemized longwall face started in 1960 in southern West Virginia. LONGWALL MINING IN 1956 The 320-ft longwall face was developed in a 32-in. thick coal seam near Greenwood, Ark. The method of mining the 320-ft coal block was the advancing system in which three entries on either side of the face were driven ahead of the advancing longwall face. The face was equipped with a coal planer and a Panzer conveyor; timbering was done with wooden timbers and cribs. The roof supports were set without any pattern. The crew to operate the planer and to handle the roof supports (timbers and cribs) consisted of 15 men per shift. During a period of approximately eight monthsof single shift operating time, the average tonnage produced in this relatively low seam amounted to about 263 tons of clean coal per shift. To show the development in the coal plow from then until now, it should be pointed out that the standard plow was used in this operation. The plow was equipped with rigid bottom bits which could not be adjusted if the plow started to climb, thereby leaving bottom coal to be recovered by pick hammers end causing delays in production. AT the 1902 May meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute, the, authors presented a paper on " The Elimination of Silicon in The Acid Open-Hearth," wherein they recorded a few typical examples of certain Siemens charges out of a very large number specially watched for the purposes of that research. The main deductions drawn from those experiments have been accepted in all the intelligent criticism during or after the discussion on the paper. One opinion, however, was rigidly held by all who mentioned the matter, with the single exception, perhaps, of Mr. Lange, and that was the necessity for the attainment and the maintenance of an abnormally high temperature in order that the percentage of silicon in the metallic bath might increase, or that an unusually large proportion of silicon might be retained in the metal. The original decision was ar-rived at on the results of scores of trials, and has since been the subject of frequent experiment. The authors still retain their opinion that although, naturally, a higher temperature will accelerate the (probable) action between the carbon of the steel and the excess silica of the slag, they then fairly proved, and have now abundantly confirmed the fact, that around the temperatures occurring in Siemens steel-making practice the chemical composition of the slag, particularly with regard to its acidity, is the factor which determines whether the percentage of silicon in the molten steel shall increase or decrease. In the discussion in 1902 Mr. Saniter called attention to Mr. H. H. Campbell's work, and in the reply the authors also mentioned that of Messrs. Winder and Brunton of 1892, the two

I am in hearty disagreement with the recommendation that geophysics should be done by cooperative work between a geologist and a geophysi-cist. That arrangement would be comparable to doing petrography by having a physicist at the microscope and a geologist sitting by his side. The interpretation of the geological significance of geophysical data can be done efficiently only by a physicist who has become also a good geologist or by a geologist who is also a good geophysicist. Less Well-trained Men The rank and file, composing perhaps two-thirds of the personnel of exploratory geophysics, is not, and should not be, composed of highly trained men. The routine, stereotyped character of the work and the impossibility of promotion of more than a few from these lower ranks even under the best circumstances justify companies in filling the bulk of these rank and file positions with men having only a bachelor's degree at the most. There can be a wide range of training for such positions, although certain lines of study are preferred for certain kinds of work, and different employers have different preferences. For work in gravitational and magnetic prospecting, first preference will be for men having geological training and second for men with civil engineering training. In seismic work, men with geological training are preferred by some employers for computers; physicists, electrical engineers and all whose technical education has covered radio circuits are preferred for the other technical positions. Collegiate training in geophysical prospecting brings no preference and by many employers is given a slightly inferior rating. One large company seldom hires men who have just graduated with a major in geophysical prospecting. This prejudice is based on the reasoning that much of what is learned in college is obsolete or obsolescent, that most of the techniques learned in college will have to be unlearned, because different from those used by the employing company, and that in the long run additional courses in basic physics, mathematics and geology are of more value to a man than the courses on geophysical prospecting. DISCUSSION [This discussion refers to the five papers beginning on page 23 and ending on page 74.1 L. W. Blau,* Houston, Texas.—I have had some rather sad experiences with forecasting. For example, I could not foresee 10 years ago my present occupation, and I do not profess to be able to look ahead 10 years and tell anyone what he will be doing then. The rates of sulfurization and desulfurization of calcium aluminate, silicate, and ferrite melts by CO + CO2 + SO2 mixtures at 1550°C are reported. It is shown that for melts 10 to 15 mm deep transport of sulfide ions within the melt controls the rate of sulfur transfer. The rate data from shallow melts, i.e., 1 to 4 mm deep, have been analyzed on the basis of a diffusion or a reaction controlled process and indications are that the both processes may play a part in controlling the rate of sulfur reaction. The rates of desulfurization of silicate XVEACTION equilibria between metals, metal oxides, and gases have received considerable attention in recent years. However, the understanding of and aluminate melts increase with increasing PCO2/PCO ratio in the gas stream, the effect being most marked for aluminate melts. The sulfide equilibrium data obtained from the present work are shown to be in accord with the results of previous studies. It is shown that carbon dioxide has a measurable solubility in silicate, aluminate, and ferrite melts. Consideration is given to the partial equilibria which control the directions and the rates of reactions occurring simultaneously in complex heterogeneous systems. the kinetics of heterogeneous reactions, particularly those occurring at elevated temperatures has not been improved appreciably. Almost all the metallurgical reactions occur in heterogeneous systems involving two or more phases. Although in many authoritative text books and original Papers the basic principles concerning the kinetics of heterogeneous reactions are clearly underlined, they are seldom used to the best advantage in kinetic studies, particularly those involving the metallurgical reac-

The response of beryl to sulfonate flotation was examined. The dependence of flotation recovery on sulfonate concentration, pH, and the absence or presence of various ions is also demonstrated. The response of quartz and feldspar to sulfonate flotation at various values of pH is given to. show the conditions necessary for selective separation. Finally, beryl was successfully concentrated from a natural ore using a technique devised from experimental observations on systems of pure minerals. With the possible exception of quartz, the flotation characteristics of silicate minerals are rather poorly understood. This is due in part to the com- plexity of the mineral systems themselves and in part to an insufficient amount of flotation data. The complexity of the systems arises from the wide range of chemical composition that the silicate minerals can assume. This is reflected in the variability of such physical properties as hardness and cleavage. Although the chemical composition of silicate minerals can vary considerably, a general grouping can be accomplished conveniently on the basis of the assemblage of SiO4 tetrahedra in all the silicates. That is, it has been shown that six basic groups can be obtained, depending on the arrangement of oxygen sharing between adjacent silicon atoms (or substituted aluminum). When all four oxygen atoms are shared, a framework structure such as quartz or feldspar is obtained. When three oxygens are shared, infinite sheets are obtained as in the micas and clays. When two oxygen atoms of the tetrahedra are shared, infinite chains are obtained, such as those in

Regenerative hot-blast stoves are now in general use in all parts of the world, and are so well understood and appreciated, that I need not take up your time with an account of their history and introduction into the United States. My object in writing this paper is to give you a short description of a stove that is now being very favorably received and adopted here (see drawing). The stove was first introduced into this country in 1887 by M'Clure & Shuler (now M'Clure & Amsler), who have the management of the patent right in the United States. The English design had to be modified to suit the exigencies of American blast-furnace practice, which, in many respects, widely differs from our English experience. In the first place, the fire-bricks used in America expand to an extent unknown in England, and it became necessary to make special provision for this by increasing the number of cross-walls, and by leaving a space at the top of the stove through which the lining could expand. The expansion laterally was, however, more difficult to provide for, as the combustion-chamber in the center, being the hottest part of the stove, must necessarily expand more than the outer walls, and therefore tend to squeeze up the flue-openings. On first introducing these stoves to American ironmasters, a feel ing seemed to prevail that a " four-pass " stove did not utilize the whole of its surface. They also had an idea that the " two-pass " stove let the burning gas go before all the duty had been extracted from it; so that it was found neceseary to design a stove of a special character to suit their wishes. Hence the "three-pass" chimney top stove now before your notice, the advantage claimed for which is that each stove is independent, requiring no underground chimney flue or stack, and can be erected at a very light cost. The working of these stoves has proved to be very successful wherever they have been introduced.

(communication to the Secretary*) :—The phenomenon described by Dr. Ledoux, involving an apparently abnormal high temperature in the air-cylinders of compressors, has not been, so far as I know, discussed in technical literature. The common formula for the adiabatic compression of dry air does not account for heat suficient to flash ordinarily decent cylinder-oils, nor do the text-books include in their theoretical statements any quantitative consideration of the effect of leaks in the ideal machines which they contemplate. Recent studies on the determination of hydrogen in steel have shown that the hot-extraction method for removing hydrogen from a solid sample is preferable to its removal from a molten sample by vacuum fusion or by fusion in vacuum with tin. A number of techniques are available, however, for determining the hydrogen so extracted. They include: thermal conductivity, gas chromatography, pressure measurement before and after catalytic oxidation of the hydrogen to water and removal of the water, and pressure measurement before and after diffusion of the hydrogen through a palladium membrane. These techniques have been evaluated on the basis of initial cost, maintenance, speed and accuracy of analysis, and applicable concentration range. The results of this study showed that the palladium-membrane technique is best suited for routine use. FOR some time investigators have been concerned with the origin, form, and effect of hydrogen in steel. In such stdies', the analysis for hydrogen constitutes one of the most important phases. It is quite apparent that the results for hydrogen concentrations in a given steel are dependent on the method of obtaining the sample, storage of the sample until analysis, preparation of the sample, and analysis of the sample, including all the facets inherent in the calibration and operation of an apparatus for gas analysis. There are a number of means available for determining hydrogen. This is a critical study of some of the more common techniques in use today. In most conventional melting and casting methods, hydrogen concentrations of 4 to 6 parts per million (ppm) in steel are quite common. Because of the undesirable effects of hydrogen on steel there has been increased use of techniques such as vacuum melting,' vacuum casting, and ladle-to-ladle stream degassing, which lower the hydrogen content to levels on the order of 1 to 2 ppm. Therefore, the method used for determining hydrogen in steel must be sensitive and precise. In any analytical procedure for gases in metals there are two distinct operations—the extraction of the gas from the metal and the analysis of the extracted gas. To extract the gas from the steel, three methods have been employed: 1) fusion of the sample with graphite at high temperature; 2) fusion with a flux, such as tin, at a lower temperature; and 3) extraction of the hydrogen from the solid sample at a temperature below the melting point of the steel. Fusion with graphite is the least-acceptable method. The blank in this method is higher and more variable than in either of the other two methods. The hydrogen fraction of the total gas composition usually is between 10 and 50 pct; thus, a larger analytical error is possible. The vacuum-tin fusion4 extraction of hydrogen is probably the most rapid method in use today; the extraction time is usually about 10 min. However, with this system a bake-out of the freshly charged tin for 2 hr is necessary and a change of crucible and a charge of fresh tin are required after each day of operation whether one or thirty samples have been analyzed. In addition, frequent checks of blank rates are required since CO and Na are continually being given up by the steel samples dissolved in the tin bath. The composition of the gas in this method lends itself readily to analysis; although the hydroge concentration may fall to as low as 50 pct, more often it is above 90 pct, thus allowing a more precise analysis (because of less interference from other gases). In 1940 ewell' published the hot-extraction method for extracting hydrogen from the solid sample, comparing analysis for hydrogen extracted at 600°C with similar analysis for the gas extracted at 1700°C by fusion with graphite. Good agreement for hydrogen was obtained between these two methods, provided sufficient time was allowed for extraction at the lower temperature. carsone obtained good results in his comparison of this hot-extraction method with vacuum-tin fusion. Subsequent work by Geller and sun7 and Hill and ohnson' has shown that steel samples should be heated to at least 800°C to effect the release not only of the diffusible hydrogen but also of the "residual" hydrogen that may be present as methane. Since the rate of evolution of hydrogene9l0 depends on such factors as sample size and composition, thermal history, and extent of cold work, a fixed extraction time is not possible. THE Coal Division holds its fall meeting in the Pocahontas coal field, at the West Virginian Hotel, Bluefield, W. Va., Oct. 9 and 10. The first day will be a busy one-two sessions for the presentation of papers and a dinner in the evening. Hon. E. Fudge, Assistant Undersecretary, Mines Department, and R. V. Wheeler, head of the Mines Research Board of Great Britain, will be the guests of the Division. Mr. Wheeler will discuss the British Mining Act as relates to the coal industry. George S. Rice, Chief Mining Engineer, U. S. Bureau of Mines, will present an account of the recent meeting at Buxton in England, of representatives of England, Germany, France, Belgium and the United States to formulate a plan and to correlate research work now in progress in the various countries. The second day the members will be the guests of the operators on a trip through the Pocahontas field. The work of preparation for the meeting is being actively pushed by committees headed by T. H. Clagett, R. M. Lambie and H. D. Smith, and a good attendance, both local and from the general membership of the Division, is anticipated. Because many will make the trip by car the principal automobile as well as rail-road connections to Bluefield are given here. The program for Friday, Oct. 9, follows:

THIS lecture can best begin with a statement of the chief conclusion: The metallurgical industry will find profit in supporting fundamental research on dislocations. This support should be done both in their own laboratories and in universities. My lecture consists of an exposition of the basis for this conclusion. The experience on which I base it is drawn largely from two fields in solid state physics—one field is transistor electronics and the other is dislocation theory. At present the relationship of solid state physics to technology is different in these two fields. In electronics without question, the physics has led the technology. In metallurgy, on the other hand, the technology in the form of metallurgical art is far ahead of the fundamental science. In transistor electronics, physics has suggested and can still suggest previously unachieved combinations of matter that will have new and useful properties; that is, the physicist can make specific predictions. The physicist can also have some confidence that the predicted devices will actually come into existence in a matter of months or years and that they will live up to the predictions. In metallurgy, the physicist cannot to a comparable degree make predictions and have the same hope that they will lead to something new and valuable. There are a number of reasons for this difference. The first is simply historical. Transistor physics is young. It may be regarded as dating from the announcement of the transistor, in which case it is about four years old, or from the first real control of semiconductors as materials (this was accomplished largely by metallurgists, by the way) in which case it is about ten years old. Metallurgical art, on the other hand, is thousands of years old. There is no doubt that the advance of this art has been and will be hastened by a good fundamental understanding of the quantum theory of atomic phenomena. It, is too much to expect, however, that theory will soon catch up with the lead that practice has gained in a thousand years, and that theory will then point out specific pathways to better materials. It seems more probable that modern atomic theory will serve to interpret and organize information much as thermodynamics has done through phase diagrams. In this lecture, I shall emphasize an important feature common to both solid state electronics and to metallurgy. This common feature is the harmonizing principle that justifies discussing electronics and metallurgy as related topics in solid state physics. In both cases the important properties of the materials arise from imperfections. By imper- fections I mean deviations of the materials from perfect single crystals. The imperfections may be of many forms. From the point of view of utility they may be either good or bad, and a given type may be good or bad depending on circumstances. The technical material of my lecture will be divided into two parts. The first will be chiefly concerned with four types of imperfections in germanium crystals. The control of these imperfections makes possible the fabrication of useful electronic devices. A good example of such control is the junction transistor, which I shall discuss from this viewpoint later. The junction transistor, as some of you may have heard, can be used as an amplifier of electrical signals and in a number of respects surpasses what has hitherto been achieved with vacuum tubes. The second part of my technical material will be concerned with dislocations. For about fifteen years the theoretical physicist has had dislocations in mind as the most important kind of imperfection in metals. He has, however, until recently had experimental material of a highly speculative nature to back up his assertions. I am fortunate in the timing of this lecture to be able to describe some recent results that put dislocations on a far more definite basis than has been the case in the past. In fact there are now some experiments which reveal the characteristic properties of dislocations almost as clearly as experiments in transistor physics reveal the properties of holes and electrons, properties that I shall soon describe. It is this advance in the status of dislocations that emboldened me to make my initial assertion that the metallurgical industry will profit from supporting fundamental research on dislocations. Transistor Electronics In order to discuss imperfections in semiconductors, it is necessary to visualize a reference condition that may be regarded as perfect. In the cases of silicon and germanium, which find application in transistor electronics,' the perfect structure is the diamond structure shown in Fig. I. In this structure, each atom is surrounded by four neighbors with which it forms four covalent or electron-pair bonds. These bonds use all of the four valence electrons possessed by each of the silicon or germanium atoms. The electronic structure of the crystal is thus complete and perfect. A crystal of silicon or germanium with a perfect electron-pair bond structure would be an insulator, In order for electrical conduction to occur, it is necessary for imperfections to arise in the electronic structure. In this lecture, I shall discuss four possible imperfections whose symbols and relationships are indicated in Table I. We shall consider first, as an example, a crystal of silicon containing an arsenic atom as an impurity.

Some years ago, the writer described heat checks or thermal cracks that occur in die-casting dies.' The life of dies was considered in relation to. the casting temperature, the material used for the die and the heat to be absorbed by the die per unit volume of casting made. The mechanism of the action that results in thermal failure of dies was described. In the present paper the writer proposes to describe some additional observations in regard to heat checking, make one or two suggestions as to the method or methods for further attack of the problem, and give the results obtained on some work carried out along these lines. Importance of Heat Checking Heat checks in steel are the source of trouble in many industries besides that of die casting. Every shop where metals are subjected to hot working is searching for improvement and hoping for a cure. The development of a material of sufficient strength to be used as a die and yet devoid of the property of heat checking would be a godsend to many shops and many industries. The need for thorough study and research on the subject is evidenced by the wide variety of hot-working die steels on the market. It is peculiar, but true, that in practically every case the maker of the steel can give concrete evidence to prove his contention that his type of hot-working die steel is as good as or better than any other. A number of steel companies have several hot-working die steels from which choice can be made to fit a particular set of requirements. Possibly to expect one material to be universally the best hot-working die steel is unreasonable. In some hot-working operations, as in drop forging, the die must have great toughness to withstand the stresses developed; in other operations, as in hot piercing or punching, resistance to erosion at high temperatures, possibly defined as strength and hardness at elevated temperatures, is required. In still others, as in die casting, only sufficient hardness to resist scoring between moving surfaces is required, whereas the resistance to sudden changes in temperature must be at a maximum.
