A wide-ranging series of experiments has been carried out on value minerals (sphalerite, smithsonite and hematite) and gangue minerals (quartz and calcite) to assess the properties of various commercially available vegetable and synthetic tannins as dispersants for these minerals in a finely ground state (<5 microns). Experiments to determine the dispersing power of each reagents on every mineral have been performed through sedimentation tests run first in water and afterwards in the presence of a collector having specific action on the mineral concerned. The tests have been extended to a wide range of dispersant concentrations, maintaining the pH and collector concentrations at the levels known to be the best for the flotation of the various minerals. By comparing the results obtained on each mineral, conclusions have been drawn on the possibility of using different classes of vegetable and synthetic tannins in the selective flotation of fine particles. These results have been related to the structure of the tanning compounds and to the surface properties of the minerals.

DuRing the winter of 1937, the writer visited a West Virginia stone quarry at which the overburden is stripped hydraulically. The quarry is in a bed of limestone, about 200 ft. thick, which outcrops on a hillside above a small river; the quarry face is 175 ft. high. The top of the stone is cut in all directions by erosion channels, which are filled with a tough, red clay. Some of the larger channels are 30 ft. deep and 8 ft. wide. The thickness of the clay overburden ranges from a few inches to 10 ft., the average being estimated as less than 3 feet. The topography of the district is rugged, and the hillside above the quarry face is not suited to the use of the usual mechanical methods of moving dirt. Until hydraulicking was started 10 years ago, the overburden was dug by hand labor, dumped to the quarry floor and transported to the dump in quarry cars. Cleaning deep channels was a slow and expensive process. When hydraulicking was started, the top of the quarry face was over 200 ft. above the level of the river. The pipe line was carried in a semicircle around the top of the quarry about 200 ft. from the face and about 50 ft. above it. As there is no adequate supply of water above the quarry, the water must be pumped from the river. As quarrying progressed the pipe line was moved until the discharge points are now over 300 ft. above the river. Water is pumped from the river by a four-stage centrifugal pump having a 5-in. intake and a 4-in. discharge. It is direct-connected to a 200-hp., 2300-volt, 1760-r.p.m. induction motor. At 1760 r.p.m. the rated capacity of the pump is 750 gal. per minute under a head of 600 ft. The pump is installed in a house of frame construction on the river bank, about 10 ft. above normal water level, which also houses the pump for the mill-water supply. Above the pumps are hoisting bays into which the motors are raised whenever the river reaches flood stage. An 8-in. suction line, equipped with a strainer and a foot valve, takes the water from a concrete sump at the edge of the river. The mining methods adopted in Japanese mines are less known to the mining world than those of other countries, owing to the geographical remoteness, but they present many features of interest to mining engineers. The Ashio copper mine is at the town of Ashio, in Tochigiken, about 109 mi. (175 km.) from Tokyo by the Imperial Government railroad. The area of the concession owned by the Furukawa Mining Co. is 5000 acres (5023 ha.). The mine was formerly divided into three, viz. Hon-ean, Kotaki, and Tsudo, which are distant 3 mi. (4.8 km.) from each other as shown in Fig. 1. However, in 1914, when the writer was general manager, the three mining plants were amalgamated into one with the result of simplifying the working projects and increasing the operating efficiency. The mine was visited by the Institute party in November, 1911, when K. Inouye was the general manager. Shortly afterward, the writer was appointed manager, and, in 1915, he was succeeded by Dr. K. Asano. At the end of 1917, K. Kibe became general manager and, after two years, was succeeded by the present manager, I. Sugimoto. For some time Dr. J. Kojima was acting general manager. It is necdless to say that the gentlemen mentioned are all members of the Institute, as is also Baron T. Furukawa, president of the company. Since the discovery of the enormous masses, called "kajika" or "bullhead" deposits, which the writer has described elsewhere,&apos; the mining methods have been varied to meet the different conditions presented by these deposits. The Ashio Ore The country rock of this mine consists of the middle Chichibian slate and quartzite into which has been intruded a post-Tertiary plagio-liparite neck more than 2 mi. in diameter, in the shape of an inverted cone which narrows downward to a relatively small diameter in depth.

The iron ores of the Mesabi Range occur in a 340 to 750-foot thick, Precambrian cherty iron formation termed "taconite." For about 65 years, extensive natural iron ore bodies were mined, and the ores either shipped as a direct ore or processed by gravity methods to a shipping grade iron ore. Since 1956, magnetite taconite ores, occurring in magnetite-rich horizons in the Biwabik iron formation, have been commercially concentrated and agglomerated. The transition from natural ores to concentrating-grade ores is progressing rapidly so that, in the near future, a major percentage of the iron ore shipped from the Mesabi Range will be as iron ore pellets produced from taconite. Natural iron ores of the Mesabi Range occur in the Biwabik formation as trough ore bodies in elongated channels and as irregular and tabular deposits in fractured areas associated with faults and folds. Ore bodies range in size from a few thousand tons to hundreds of millions of tons and may occur in any part of the iron formation. In some areas of strong ore development, ore was formed from the hanging-wall argillite to the footwall quartzite. The natural ores and beneficiating-grade natural crude ores were formed by the oxidation of the iron minerals, magnetite, greenalite, stilpnomelane, minnesotaite, and siderite, to hematite and goethite and by the removal of much of the silica in the cherty quartz and in the associated silicates by leaching. The ores are believed to have formed by the oxidizing and leaching action of surface waters. Magnetite taconite ores occur as stratigraphic zones in the Biwabik formation where it contains sufficient magnetite to be concentrated profitably, by magnetic methods, to give a magnetite concentrate that is agglomerated into a high quality product. Unoxidized taconite has an extensive distribution away from and between channels of oxidation and leaching but only a part of the unoxidized taconite is of ore grade. Two general types of magnetite taconite ore occur: ( 1) magnetite taconite of the Main Mesabi Range, generally west of Mesaba, which is composed of magnetite associated with cherty quartz, greenalite, stilpnomelane, minnesotaite, and carbonates and (2) magnetite taconite of the Eastern Mesabi, generally east of Mesaba, composed of magnetite associated with quartz, cummingtonite, actinolite, ferrohypersthene, hedenbergite, fayalite, hornblende, pyroxene, garnet, and biotite. The Mesabi taconite is a metasediment derived from an iron- and silica-rich chemical sediment that has been regionally metamorphosed and, on the eastern end, additionally metamorphosed by the Duluth Gabbro Complex.

Discussion of the paper of GEORGE S. RICE and H. H. CLARK, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting, October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 94, October, 1914, pp. 2563 to 2571. NORMAN V. BRETH,* Pittsburgh, Pa.-It was my privilege to visit in the last two months on behalf of the U. S. Bureau of Mines 10 mines where electric shot-firing systems controlled from outside the mine are installed. I will describe briefly what I saw in some of these mines, which are located in Utah, New. Mexico, Oklahoma, Alabama, and Kansas. At a mine in Utah, 230-volt alternating current is used to fire the shots, which is taken from a small transformer in the substation. The shot-iring circuit is independent of all other wires and is tested for grounds every day. There are no lightning arresters on the firing circuit. Porcelain insulators are used inside of the mine, and glass outside. The switches are situated as follows: One in the substation, one in, the shot-firer&apos;s cabin, two at each cross entry; where the shot-firing circuit crosses the trolley wire a switch is placed on either side of the entry in series with the shot-firing circuit. The miners are checked in and out of the mine. The coal is undercut and is shot down with permissible explosive, the shots being connected in multiple. There are 75 to 110 shots fired each day. A great many times there are no missed shots. If not more than two or three are missed they are left until next day. The fan is kept running at full speed when the shots are fired. The shot-firing switch is closed only once and the whole mine is shot at once. At another mine in Utah, power wires are used for shot-firing circuits; 500-volt, direct current is used to fire the shots. The only sizes of wire used outside of the power wires are Nos. 8 and 14 B. & S. gauge. The return is connected to the pipe lines and track. Porcelain insulators are. used inside of the mine.

Discussion of the paper of E. G. Woodruff, presented at the Butte meeting, August, 1913, and printed in Bulletin No. 78, June, 1913, pp. 1001 to 1010. F. A. LINFORTH, Butte, Mont.:-I have not had an opportunity of reading this paper thoroughly, but I would like to call attention to the possible use of the contours on fault planes. It is obvious that if the contours of fault surfaces call be determined, we will be able to determine the axes of the hollows in the fault surface. It seems probable, and there are examples to point to the accuracy of, the assumption, that the axes of these hollows may be the direction of movements on the faults, and if that is true it will aid materially in locating faulted ore bodies or the shoots of ore on the opposite sides of faults. A few such contour maps of faults have been attempted on some of the faults of the Butte district, and those faults which are believed to have the nearly normal movement exhibit for the axes of these hollows a line nearly up and down in the plane of the fault, but in those cases where the throw is believed to bee nearly horizontal we find that the axes of the hollows are almost horizontal lines. In other words, the movements on faults, I believe, would be more nearly indicated by the larger grooves in the fault surfaces than by the small slickensides and minor hollows that are seen, so that contour maps might be valuable in geology in that way. C. W. GOODALE, Butte, Mont.:-I received a letter from Mr. Woodruff asking me to take part in the discussion of his paper, but I have not had time to give the paper any study. I can certainly add my opinion to that of all the engineers here that the topographic maps of the government are of great aid to the engineer. When I visit a new district, the first thing I do is to see if that district has been covered by the U. S. Geological Survey avid if topographic map has been issued. And I find that some of the younger engineers frequently come into my office to see if I have such maps. I know in some cases the reports made out by engineers contain copies of these topographic maps, or clippings from them. I am sure that. the topographic maps furnished by the government are of very great value to our engineers.

Edward Payson Mathewson EDWARD PAYSON MATHEWSON, President of the American Institute of Mining and Metallurgi-cal Engineers, was born in Montreal, Canada, Oct. 16, 1864, of Scotch-Irish ancestors. After preparation in private and public schools, he graduated from McGill University with the degree of Bachelor of Applied Science, in 1885, having specialized in mining engineer-ing and metallurgy. He spent the succeeding summer as a surveyor with the Canadian Geological Survey, being employed in the lake region of Ontario. The following spring he left Canada for Colorado, where he immediately obtained a position as assayer with the Pueblo Smelting & Refining Co. Within three years he became superintendent of the plant, and his success in this position brought him to the attention of the Guggenheim family, whose employ he entered in 1897. He was first in charge of their Pueblo plant, but was soon transferred to their refinery at Perth Amboy, N. J. During the succeeding five years he was in charge of important smelting operations conducted by the firm in Mexico and South America. In June, 1902, Mr. Mathewson accepted a position at the Washoe reduction works at Anaconda, soon thereafter becoming manager of the property. It is unnecessary to recount the improvements and enlarge-ments instituted at that plant under his management, until it became the Mecca of all metallurgists visiting the United States. The esteem in which Mr. Mathew-son was held, not only by the men directly under him, but by all his fellow citizens, was expressed in a send-off such as probably no other plant manager has ever received, when he left Anaconda in October, 1916, to accept the general managership of the British America Nickel Corporation, at Nickelton, Ont., Canada. Soon thereafter Mr. Mathewson accepted an appoint-ment as director of the American Smelting and Refining Co., acting as consulting metallurgist for the company and its subsidiaries. In November, 1919, he resigned this position and opened an office in New York City as a consulting metallurgist.

THE Southeast Missouri division of the St. Joseph Lead Co. normally hauls and hoists over 5 million tons of lead ore each year. This ore is mined in the stopes and headings of 20 mines, hauled to a main line system, see above, and transported up to 6.4 miles to ore-hoisting shafts. Average haulage distance is 2.16 miles. A few years ago a distinguished mining engineer visiting this area for the first time remarked, "You do not have a mining problem; yours is a haulage problem." Its relative importance may be gaged by the fact that mine haulage represents about 25 pct of the total cost of mining ore, the most costly single underground operation. The Southeast Missouri lead belt is a mining district located about 65 miles south of St. Louis. This district is roughly 6 miles wide and 10 miles long. The ore horizon lies about 400 ft below the surface where most of the ore is mined from flat-lying beds of dolomitic limestone. This paper deals with the central part of the district, namely, that portion which contains a group of interconnected mines all in a central haulage system, serving four hoisting shafts. The two major hoisting operations are carried out at Federal No. 17 shaft and Leadwood No. 12 shaft. No. 17 accounted for about 70 pct of the ore hoisted in the district during 1950, averaging about 14,000 tons per operating day. The underground dumping and skip-pocket system at this shaft is similar to those of the other shafts except that it has two rotary dumps. The other ore-hoisting shafts have only one. It might be mentioned that waste rock is hoisted at still other shafts, hauled off, and dumped on the surface by trucks. The hoisting shafts are on a connected system of about 200 miles of underground 24-in. gage main line railroad. There is also the Bonne Terre system, with its own ore-hoisting shaft, which consists of 13.5 miles of 24-in. gage main line, located in the extreme north portion of the lead belt area. Smaller outlying mines such as Doe Run No. 12 and Hayden Creek operate on trackless or shuttle car haulage. In addition to the system of main line haulage, each contributing mine group has its own extensive system of stope or heading railroad. Trackless mining is making considerable headway in the Lead-wood and Desloge mines. Here the shovel loads into a shuttle car which in turn dumps into mine cars spotted on the main line track system. THIs old and once famous district played, through its enormous production of silver and gold, an important part in the history of the State of San Luis Potosi. According to a pamphlet prepared under the direction of the Governor of the State, Sr. Don Blas Escontria, and presented to the visiting members of the Institute during the Mexican meeting of 1901, this district is situated 20 km. east of the city of San Luis Potosi, in a range of mountains of moderate height, extending 135 km. N. and S., and 16 km. E. and W.; and the mineralized area hitherto developed is about 600,000 sq. m. The history of the district, as given by the record dated 1778, and formerly kept in the Sail Francisco convent, says that it was discovered in 1575 by Sr. Don Pedro Irarte, and adds that the city of San Luis Rey de Francisco de1 Potosi received its name (in allusion to the famous Potosi mines in Bolivia) by reason of the remarkable productiveness of its gold- and silver-mines in the first period of their exploration, during which they paid to the Crown, as quintos (the fifth part of the product), $97,000,000, as appears from the accounts of the royal treasury. The amount of the quintos paid during the " bonanza period " of 80 years was $72,000,000. The larger sum first mentioned probably represents a longer series of years. But either will suffice to indicate the great wealth of the mines. Statistics show arz increase in the average depth of wells drilled in recent years. As a corollary to this trend, drilling fluids have been improved in an effort to meet the problems inherent at temperatures approaching 500°F. Of importance are (1) deterioration of mud components and (2) the effect of solids on filtration and rheological properties. High-temperature, stable water-base and oil-bare muds are discussed. Those areas in which differences exist are pointed out. Results are based on data taken from the Fann consistotneter, rheometer and shear-strength measurements, static and dynamic filtration tests, methy-lene blue test for bentonite solids and specific heat measLrrenlents of muds. INTRODUCTION Higher well temperatures go along with the fact that the average depth of wells continues to increase. Recent data by Gardner&apos; lists 137 completions deeper than 15,000 ft for the first half of 1964 with a record second-half total of 167 wells drilling or proposed. In addition, there has been an increase in drilling for steam for power production or mineral recovery. In this application the depths are modest, but the mud may approach the critical pressure and temperature of water. Scearce and Magnon&apos; report drilling mud used at temperatures of about 700°F in the Salton Sea area of California. Most deep wells have been drilled with water-base muds. In recent years, however, there has been a substantial increase in the use of oil-base muds because of technological advances in effective additives. The significance of this development was dealt with in considerable detail by Simpson and his co-workers.3 Additiona1 field data have now been obtained to indicate that oil muds are competitive in control, performance and cost with the best types of water muds for use at high temperaturc. This parallel offer of two very different fluid systems, each offering a similar variability in performance, cost and convenience, has created the need to evaluate the merits of these fluids under specified conditions so that the advantages and disadvantages of each can be weighed in relation to the over-all drilling program. This paper is not intended as a review of all the factors. Rather, it attempts to emphasize: (1) important condltions and facts peculiar to high-temperature drilling muds, (2) that more than one imposed test condition or testing method is necessary to describe the quality of a mud at high temperature and (3) that elaborate experimental precautions are necessary whenever laboratory data are used in selection of a mud for field use. WHAT IS A HIGH-TEMPERATURE DRILLING FLUID? For the purpose of this discussion, a high-temperature drilling fluid is any system so formulated or treated to economically minimize the effects of temperature on the properties of the fluid. Our experience in drilling fluids suggests that these effects become obvious for many mud materials at temperatures of 300F or higher. It is understood that hydrolysis of starches, depoly-merization of certain organic thinners, or irreversible chemical reactions (such as that of clay and lime) can affect filtration, viscosity and shear strength at less than 300F. However, the temperature level is not a serious point and in no way affects the precautions and techniques used in this study. An up-to-date review of the literature on high-temperature drilling fluids and the many variations was treated by Rogers&apos;in 1963. EXPERIMENTAL REQUIREMENTS TESTING EQUIPMENT AND PROCEDURES With the advent of deeper drilling and increased demand for temperature-stable drilling fluids, new testing equipment and laboratory techniques were devised for the evaluation of drilling fluids subjected to elevated temperature and pressure. While the equipment has not been standardized, it is in widespread use. Milligan et al. Qescribe a filtration cell for determining the filtration properties of drilling fluids at temperatures in excess of 300F. They showed the effect of variations in temperature and pressure on oil and water muds filtered in the 300 to 400F range. The dynamic filtration apparatus described by Simpson6 permits the study of the filtration properties to temperatures of 350F for drilling fluids circulated over sandstone cores. Watkins et al.&apos; describe the use of pressure bombs for studying the effect of prolonged periods of elevated temperature upon the gelation or solidification of drilling fluids. Chisholm et a1.&apos; describe the use of a modified cement consistometer adapted for use in drilling fluid evaluations. A similar consistometer is used in this study, although the application and data-recording method have been changed. The consistency of a mud sample is measured by timing the movement of a soft iron bob which is magnetically moved up and down in the sample container.* Changer in the time of travel and the temperature of the mud at that moment are plotted with a two-point Brown Elec-tronik Recorder. This chapter deals with the systems of laws by which governments regulate the exploration for and production of the minerals within their jurisdictions. It is a summary, restricted by necessary space limitations, of material assembled by the author for a forthcoming publication of the United States Bureau of Mines, "Summary of Mining and Petroleum Laws of the World." (Information Circular, 1959.) The present study is organized in three parts, dealing with (1) the historical background of these legal systems, (2) laws of the United States, and (3) laws of other countries of the world. The reader&apos;s attention is invited to the acknowledgments at the end of the chapter, which inadequately express the appreciation due those who have assisted in the collection of this material. Part I. Historical Development of Major Western Systems of Land Tenancy with Respect to the Ownership and Control of Minerals The use of metals in primitive societies was largely confined to the manufacture of weapons for self-preservation. The ruler&apos;s control over copper, then brass, then iron, was essential to maintenance of his own ascendancy at home and his group&apos;s position against neighbors who had access to similar metals. Ancient societies were thus characterized by the ruling group&apos;s ownership of minerals and metals. The Egyptian civilization, which emerged in the fourth millenium B.C. upon the agricultural subjugation of the lower valley of the Nile, was responsible for extensive development of the upper valley as a source of mineral wealth. The production of gold during the height of that civilization has been estimated at $30,000,000 per year, thus equaling the early placers of California and Australia. The mines of Egypt were the property of the Pharaohs and were controlled at their direction. Greek mining developed a different scheme of land tenancy which more closely resembled modem concepts. Ix estimating the investment-value of a mining-property or plant, the value of which decreases with operation, it is often necessary to know the sum which must be set aside periodically from earnings either to renew the plant at the end off its life, or to return the capital involved when the earning-power of the investment has ceased. In such cases it is manifestly incorrect simply to divide the total amount to be retired by the number of periods (usually years) during which the investment shall be active, as the sums periodically withdrawn have a certain interest-earning power varying with the length of time they are held and with the opportunities afforded for their investment. But though the interest may be considered to accumulate regularly year by year, yet the rules and tables for compound interest do not apply, owing to the addition of a fixed amount of new money to the total at the beginning of each period. Briefly stated, the problem of sinking-funds is, to find the amount of money which must be periodically set aside at a certain rate of interest, regularly compounded, to yield a certain sum in a given, length of time. In most practical cases the interest is compounded and the fresh amount added at the same time-usually once a year-and on this basis the problem may be solved as follows

The influence of modifications in the molybdenum, vanadium and, to a limited degree, carbon and boron content to a basic composition of 5 pct Cr, 0.75 pct Mo, 1 pct V hot-work tool steel composition, was studied in respect to hardenability, grpain- coarsening temperature, and tempering charactevistics. Tensile, impact, and fatigue pvoperties were studied for the most promising compositions. An alloy with a typical composition of 0.43 pct C, 4.97 pct CI-, 0.33 pct Si, 2.25 pct Mo, and 1.00 pct V uas found to offer the most favorable combination of properties in respect to high-strength applicntions when tempered at 1100°F. MANY 5 pct Cr high-strength steels are at present being manufactured in North America which fit well into the classification of the AISI-SAE system. Much interest has been shown in these materials as ultra-high-strength steels for use at elevated temperatures. The limiting temperature of use lies at the point where the steels begin to soften rapidly. Although a great deal of information has been made available in the past two years on the properties of selected alloys in this series, little information exists on the effect of systematically varying the ccntent of one or more elements in the 5 pct Cr-base alloy. This paper presents the results of an investigation of the effect of variations of the carbon, molybdenum, vanadium, and, to a limited extent, the silicon, manganese, boron, and niobium content of a 5 pct Cr steel to the AISI H-13 base analysis. Antropov, recently visited China and claims that this country occupies one of the foremost places in the world in reserves of tin, tungsten, molybdenum, antimony, iron ore, coal, and phosphates. Occurrences of economic value of chromite, nickel, gold, beryllium, tantalum, niobium, rare earths, and asbestos have also been reported. MINERAL RESOURCES Coal: The inferred reserves of coal are estimated at at 1,500 billion tons. A considerable part of the coal reserves is represented by coking coal, 80% of which is bituminous. Thicknesses of coal seams range up to 150 ft in the principal deposits located in northern and northeastern China. The total output of coal in 1958, 270 million tons, was produced by an army of 20 million people mainly in small mines operated by the agricultural communes. The specific conductance of FeOx,-CaO melts in contact with iron was found to decrease from 200 ohm-1 cm-1 for FeO, to 40 ohm-1 cm-1 for a melt containing 26.3 pct CaO at 1400°C. The temperature coefficient was positive at all compositions, but became smaller at high CaO contents. Current efficiencies for electrolysis increased from 2.5 pct in FeOx to 17.3 pct at the high CaO composition, indicating a change from predominantly electronic conduction to conduction with a substantial ionic contribution. It was shown that Ca++ ions as well as Fe++ ions carry the ionic current. A subsidiary investigation on the apparent effect of atmospheres of argon, helium, and nitrogen on the electrical conductivity showed that this could be correlated with surface temperature losses, which varied with the thermal conductivities of the gases and resulted in precipitation of metal by the reaction 3 Fe++ = 2 Fe+++ + Fe. The work described in this paper is offered as a contribution to the general fund of knowledge concerning metallurgical slags. Measurement of electrical conductivity and electrolysis are comparatively trouble -free methods for investigating molten materials, but, although these methods had been used for complex slags, it was not until the work of Bockris et al.1 that the approach of examining simple binary slag systems was employed, and CaO-SiO2, MnO-SiO2, and Al2O3-Si9 were studied. Two groups have performed work of particular relevance to the present investigation. Inouye, Tomlinson, and chipman2 studied the conductivity of wustite as a function of temperature and of the addition of 5 mol pct of a number of oxides, including CaO. They concluded that molten FeOx in equilibrium with iron is a semiconductor. Simnad, Derge, and ceorge3 demonstrated the ionic nature of liquid iron silicate slags and also concluded that, although the conductivity of FeOx in equilibrium with iron is predominantly electronic in nature, there is a small ionic contribution. The work reported here on FeOx,-CaO slags consists of three main parts, namely, the determination of the specific conductance over a wide composition range, an investigation into the nature of the conductivity through current-efficiency measurements over the same composition range, and an attempt to identify the current-carrying ions, as well as a subsidiary investigation on the apparent effect of the nature of the inert atmosphere on the conductivity. EXPERIMENTAL Materials. The slags, varying in composition from FeOx to 27 pct CaO, were prepared by heating reagent- grade Fe2O3 in an ingot iron crucible with a suitable amount of CaCO3 and, in some cases, powdered iron, in air. This prefused material was then used for the runs. At the end of each run the cell was removed from the furnace and quenched by immersing the bottom half in water. After crushing, the slags were analyzed for calcium and total iron by the usual wet methods. The oxygen content was obtained by difference. Specific Conductance: Apparatus and Method. Fig. shows the experimental setup, with the conductivity cell and leads of ingot iron. The standard four-probe method for measuring high conductivities was used. In this, the potential drop across the unknown resistance is compared with the potential drop across a known resistance connected in series, i .e., same current through both resistances. Thus there are both current and potential leads to the center electrode and to the crucible, which acts as th other electrode. Both ac and dc circuits were available for the measurements; they have been described in earlier work performed in this laboratory.4,5 The geometry of the cell was such that the center electrode was equidistant from the bottom and sides of the crucible. This ensured that the current path was the same irrespective of the magnitude of the conductivity of the material in the cell. Cell constant were measured with KC1 or NaCl solutions, which have considerably lower conductivities (0.0013 to 0.25 ohm-&apos; cm) than the slags, and this precaution in design made sure that the determined cell constants applied to the cells with contents of any conductivity. The cell-constant determinations were made with the ac measuring circuit to prevent polarization. The four-probe method eliminates lead resistance but not the resistance of those parts of the center

In the summer of 1842 my father, William Firmstone, was engaged by Charles Jackson, Jr., of Boston, to examine the conditions in the Lehigh valley as a site for blast-furnaces using anthracite for fuel. In consequence of his report, he was further engaged by Mr. Jackson to build a furnace for him and his partners on the Lehigh canal, 2 miles above the mouth of the river at Easton. Work was begun in the fall of 1842, and the first furnace blown-in in 1844. The history of the works, therefore, from 1844 to 1887, when my own connection with them ceased, covers only four years less than the whole period of the rise, culmination, and commencement of the decline in the smelting of iron with anthracite in America, the beginning of which, in a commercial sense, may be put in 1839.&apos; Although this paper, as the title indicates, is concerned almost exclusively with the furnaces at Glendon, still what was done there was more or less influenced by current opinion in the district, and even reflects, to some extent, the changes in opinion and practice with mineral fuel the world over. No. 1 Furnace was built of red brick, on four piers, had three tuyeres and fore-hearth and tymp, as was universal with furnaces using mineral fuel until the introduction of Lurmann&apos;s cinder-tuyere. The dimensions and profile are shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The first hearth (Fig. 1) was of sandstone; all after were of fire-brick (Fig. 2). The profile was no doubt derived directly from Gibbons&apos;s furnace,2 for it appears from W. Firmstone&apos;s note-books that in October, 1840, he visited " Gibbons&apos; new furnaces building at Corbyn Hall," and I have an old drawing,

TONIGHT I want to speak of the current problems and the postwar difficulties facing American industry. American industry has done an outstanding job in adjusting its operations to wartime necessity. The national income for 1942 was nearly $120,000,090,000 and of this outlay approximately $55,000,000,000 went for war material. The enormity of the expenditures for war material is indicated by the fact that the expenditures for war purposes alone were greater than the annual gross national income in the period 1931-34. This tremendous production job in turning out a record output of war products was accomplished by industry in spite of a large number of restraining and hampering influences, and I want to mention several of the more important problems.
