The Denali Prospect (147° 08' 20" W, 63° 08' 50" N) is located on the south flank of the Alaska Range in the Clearwater Mountains in south central Alaska. (See Figure 1). The mineralization was discovered in 1963 and surface explora¬tion began the following summer. Surface trenching and diamond drilling were used to locate and sample the mineralized zones. In 1969, an adit totalling approximately 1400 feet was completed. In 1970, a -15% grade decline approximately 1800 feet long was completed. Further diamond drilling was done along with both underground programs. Although much work remains to be done to properly evaluate the prospect, results from all the work to date are quite encouraging. This paper will consider the geology of the prospect and the surrounding area, some- aspects of the geochemistry of the sulfides, and the origin of the sulfide deposits. This paper includes data from this writer's Ph. D. dissertation, "Geology and Geochemistry of the Denali Prospect, Clearwater Mountains Alaska" from the University of Alaska and subsequent work.

The Illinois-Kentucky mining district has, since 1880, accounted for 80 per cent of all U.S. production of fluorspar. The ore deposits are of two types: vein deposits formed by fissure fillings along faults and bedding-replacement deposits formed by the replacement of strata at certain favored stratigraphic positions along minor faults and fractures. Fluorite is the chief valuable mineral in the deposits. Sphalerite and galena commonly are present in small amounts but, in some ore bodies, may form a substantial part of the valuable constituents of the ore. Calcite is the chief gangue mineral; quartz and barite Exposed strata range from Devonian are present in various amounts. through Pennsylvanian in age. Igneous intrusive rocks occur as mafic dikes and sills and intrusive breccia dikes and plugs. Structurally, the district is situated on a generally northwest- trending arch that has been sliced into a series of long, narrow blocks by normal faults that trend northeastward. The structural The localization of the ore deposits by faults and fractures, the association of fluorite mineralization with intrusive breccias, and various lines of petrographic and geochemical evidence indicate that the fluorite-zinc-lead deposits were epigenetic and deposited by solutions emanating from a deep alkalic magma.

A number of novel solutions have been proposed in recent years as alternatives to props and tie-backs in deep excavation support e.g. Adekunte (2008), Deschamps et. al. (2008), Adekunte et al. (2010) and Adekunte (2014). A number of these non-standard restraining solutions involve the construction of permanent or temporary vertical or raking buttress piles that are rigidly connected to the excavation support wall at regular intervals along the wall run. This paper chiefly focuses on the design and construction of twin-vertical buttress piles as restraining systems behind or in front of embedded retaining walls. The system essentially relies on the push-pull mechanism that develops between the twin piles, to maintain the overall stability of the excavation support. The paper’s main areas of concentration include; finite element modelling, geostructural design, construction procedure, instrumentation and monitoring that are associated with the application of twin- buttress pile systems. These are supported with project details of three recently completed high-end luxurious residential developments in Greater London, England, on which the twin-buttress pile system was used to restrain the excavation support walls for the basements on the sites. The mode of application of the system varies across the three sites. While the system was adopted as a long term solution behind the retaining wall on one of the sites, it was designed and constructed for temporary use in front of the retaining walls on the other two sites. Instrumentation and monitoring results from all the sites show the non-traditional system to be safe and effective, whilst having significant beneficial effects on construction programme, sequence of works and project cost.

IN most human endeavors a knowledge of the terrain is essential to the effective carrying out of projects, but no line of work is more dependent on maps than theoretical and applied geology. Maps of a kind do exist for all of the area of the United States, but most of them are crude affairs and of little use in engineering, planning, and scientific research. Topographic mapping in the United States was initiated on a national scale by the U. S. Geological Survey and the organizations that were merged in its creation to make base maps for geologists. Their work could not be effectively done then and cannot be effectively done now without maps that accurately delineate the earth's surface. The distribution of the rock masses that contain valuable mineral bodies, or that by their intrusion brought them into existence, is the first step in a study of the mineral resources of the nation. This work requires three-dimensional maps, that is, topographic maps on which the land forms are shown by contours.

Laser coatings are used for a wide variety of applications. TiB2/Ni intermetallic matrix composite coatings were fabricated on Al-substrate by a high power Rofin Sinar Nd: YAG solid-state laser. The characterization of the coatings was carried out by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM/EDS) and X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Electrochemical study of the laser coatings in 3.65 per cent NaCl at room temperature revealed that with very high weight proportion of nickel the corrosion resistance of the coatings deteriorated due the presence of AlB10 phase. 50 wt per cent TiB2+50 wt per cent Ni laser coatings exhibited the highest corrosion resistance in test solution. Several thousand years ago, metallurgists discovered that by combining two relatively soft metals, copper and tin, they could make a new material, bronze, that was stronger than either metal separately. Bronze and other alloys show how different materials can be integrated to create something new and better. Today?s mining industry can likewise find benefit in an integrated approach to managing the external impacts it has through its waste materials and its use of water. Just as using bronze gave ancient nations an economic and military advantage, mining companies can gain competitive advantage through finding better ways to manage water and waste. Trends pushing this include: ? Environmental ? Regulations on water-taking and the quality of discharged water are becoming more stringent. Net zero discharge requirements are often imposed by regulators. Mining companies also come under pressure to manage environmental impacts of mine waste, including minimizing the area occupied by waste and seepage amount resulting from infiltration of water from a smaller surface area. ? Social ? Particularly in arid parts of the world, there are multiple possible uses for each gallon of water. Local residents do not want to see a reduction in supplies of water for agricultural, domestic, manufacturing and other purposes. They get suspicious about any potential impact of water being mixed with their water reservoirs if it comes from a mining site, even if it would be treated. Such suspicions may cause conflicts among the stake-holders and delays in project approval processes.

As a continuation of previous work, further tests have been carried out to recover silver from the residues obtained in a zinc jarosite process. Selective flotation has been performed with different reagents, and ?cleaning steps have been introduced to upgrade the silver concentrate. Leaching of crude residues, as well as flotation tailings, has been carried out with cyanide and thiourea. Finally, the different beneficiation methods are compared, and the industrial aspects? of their application are reviewed.

The assessment of blasting results under production conditions is extremely difficult. As a result, it can take months or years to establish objective and valid estimates of explosive performance in achieving rockbreaking goals. This fundamental problem often results in decisions related to the manufacture, marketing, purchase and use of explosives being largely swayed by calculated energies from detonation codes. However, these codes are by no means standardised. Different energies are given by different codes because these employ varying combinations of fundamental science and empiricism. After a basic review of code operation, important guidelines to dependability are given with reference to ICI’S state-of-the-art codes IDEX and CPEX. Distinctions are drawn between Ideal, Non-Ideal and Blasting Codes. Concepts of explosive energy are discussed in brief.

On Aug. 31, 2006, Tropical Storm Ernesto hit the city of Richmond, VA. The Battery Park area was hit particularly hard, as flooding forced an evacuation of the area. A large sinkhole collapsed a sewer line in the Battery Park area, blocking the pipe and causing more serious flooding. This article describes the fast track design, bidding and construction of an emergency tunnel to bypass the collapsed sewer. Innovative value engineering, tunneling and shaft-sinking methods and final lining design all contributed to the success of this project. The storm inundated Richmond, VA with up to 305 mm (12 in.) of rain that, in some areas, caused widespread flooding and damage. One of the hardest hit areas of Richmond was Battery Park. A major trunk sewer in the Battery Park area collapsed and caused local combined sewer and stormwater flooding. The collapsed sewer was a 2.4-m x 76-mm (8-ft- x 3-in.-) wide by 2.7-m- x 152-mm- (9-ft- x 6 in.-) high arch sewer that was constructed in the 1920s and later filled over with municipal solid waste and a soil fill cap to cur-rent elevations. A sinkhole was created in the area of collapse approximately 18 m (60 ft ) deep and 31 m (100 ft) in diameter. This caused the existing arch sewer to become blocked. As a result of this blockage, contaminated floodwaters reached depths in low-lying areas in excess of 8 m (25 ft).

Today, I want to challenge this audience by charging each of you to be a greater manager and superior engineer to manage and engineer our way through the 1980's and profitably overcome all the present and proposed government regulations. May of the present and proposed regulations will tax you and your company's management and engineering to the brink of physical and monetary exhaustion, but I believe we can succeed and coal can be America's answer to her hungry energy needs. To put our 1980's challenge into perspective, I want to give two great challenges we must overcome. First - We must improve on our process of compliance to new government regulations in the technical and equipment end of our industry. The Lord said, "Let There Be Light". MSHA said, "Let there be light in underground coal mines". Since that time, we have lived through an unmanageable and tremendously costly period of compliance.

Introduction This paper deals with the operations and plant of the Craigmont Corundum Project, formerly of Wartime Metals Corporation but now under the Mines Section of the Resources Development Branch of the Department of Reconstruction and Supply. Corundum is recovered by the re-treatment of an old tailing deposit at Craigmont, Ontario. Crude concentrates so produced are shipped to the plant of the American Abrasives Company, Inc., at Westfield, Mass., for final processing and distribution to the abrasive industry. The plant was recently described in a paper entitled Craigmont Corundum which was presented by the writer before the Chicago meeting of the A.I .M.E. in February, 1946. General The Project is located on? lots 4 and 5, concession XVIII, township of Raglan, Renfrew county, Ontario, near the village of Combermere, which is on Highway 62. The property is about 135 miles from Ottawa. The general area enjoys a pleasant climate with moderate summer temperatures, though the winters are rather severe, the mercury frequently falling to - 35 deg. F. The excellent boating, fishing, and hunting have made the district a favourite resort for tourists. Lumbering is the main industry. Some farming is carried on, but the soil is poor and much of the land is hilly and rocky. There are no other operating mines in the immediate vicinity, though several 'industrial minerals', including mica, feldspar, nepheline, beryl, socialite, and others have been produced in the area. The district is drained by the York and Madawaska rivers and is generously dotted with large and small lakes. The general elevation is about 1,000 feet above sea level, though numerous hills rising several hundred feet give a rolling appearance to the landscape.

Phosphate deposits are distributed widely over the earth's surface. Of the known areas of deposit, eight fields are of particular interest because of their vast reserves of high grade phosphatic material and the volume of their production that goes to the world's great consuming areas. These fields, in the order of their present economic importance, are situated respectively in Florida, French Morocco, Kola Peninsula of U.S.S.R., Tunisia and Algeria, Tennessee, Montana-Idaho-Wyoming-Utah, Ocean and Naru Islands in the Gilbert group, and in Egypt. The Rocky Mountain deposits have a comparatively low ranking in the phosphate trade of today, but this field contains one of the largest known reserves of phosphatic material, associated with which are recoverable trace minerals, which are of increasing importance in our national economy. The first discoveries of phosphate rock in the western states were recorded in Cache1 and Rich2 counties in Utah, respectively in 1889 and 1897. Mining operations were begun on these deposits near Montpelier, Idaho, in 1906. During the latter year geological studies of the phosphate beds were started by Weeks and Ferrier of the U. S. Geological Survey. These studies have been continued to the present day by a distinguished roster of the Survey's technicians. As a result of this systematic exploratory program, the Survey has published a series of bulletins, papers, and maps, which provide the mining public with a comprehensive study of the exposed

"The mining industry is currently facing challenges with declining feed grades and is struggling to find solutions to improve the project’s economic value. By means of pre-concentration, ore sorting aims to separate the barren material from the valuable ore to reduce energy consumption and tailings generation, while increasing the feed grade, concentrate grade, mill recovery, and revenue. In addition, ore sorting allows the modification of deposit geometallurgy in order to allow the creation of an optimal mill feed.This paper evaluates the applicability and challenges of ore sorting by utilizing the results from four different mines, and reviews them in detail. The mines include two underground and two open pit mines that are base metal and precioius metal operations. In order to understand the applicability of ore sorting in these operations, initial rock-by-rock test results and different types of assays (atomic adsorption [AA], inductively coupled plasma [ICP], and fire assay) are utilized. Using the assay results, the grade recovery curves for ore sorting are generated and they are further improved by using and developing an ore sorting algorithm, which is discussed in this paper. The application and evaluation of ore sorting in greenfield and brownfield properties will also be discussed.The state of the art ore sorting technologies for both rock-by-rock and bulk sorting are reviewed in this paper. The future technologies on the horizon, including different combinations of sensors, are explained. The sorting technologies include, X-ray transmission (XRT), X-ray fluorescence (XRF), colour, infrared, electromagnetic, and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS).IntroductionOre sorting is a sensor-based sorting technique introduced between the excavation stage and processing stage, where the unwanted waste is diverted to the waste dump and only the ore is sent to the mill for further processing. As a result, the quality of the material entering the mill is improved and the dilution of the ore is reduced. In greenfield projects, sensor-based ore sorting provides an opportunity to reduce the capital cost of the project and increase the return on investment (ROI). With most operations currently facing the challenge of finding a high grade deposit, having a sorting unit provides several advantages while keeping the cost at minimum."

I. INTRODUCTION The object of this paper is to enlarge the field of settling velocities treated by me in my former papers, Close Sizing Before Jigging, and Sorting Before Sizing.' There seemed need of work both on coarser and on finer sizes. Messrs. A. Sidney Warren and M. L. Nagel undertook the investigation for the coarser sizes, from 12.85 mm. down to 2.05 mm. diameter. Their work, because of the closer spacing and because of the increased number of observations and consequent stronger averages, called for a revision of the former work. Messrs. G., A. Barnaby and Ralph Hayden undertook this part of the work, from 2.49 mm. down to 0.28 mm., which is near the limit of sifting. Their work covers the ground much more minutely and comprehensively than the former papers. There remained to be covered the portion of the field too fine for investigation with the sieves. This part, covering the range of grains from 0.48 to 0.03 mm., was undertaken by Mr. E. S. Bardwell. For it he used the elutriation method. II. THE FIRST, OR COARSEST, SECTION OF THE FIELD. The first desideratum in this investigation was a series of sieves for sizing the sands preparatory to making the tests. It became necessary, therefore, to decide on a sieve-scale for this purpose. A sieve-scale is a series of sieves in which the dimensions of the holes of the successive members form a series increasing by a. definite ratio. This paper is one of a series, describing current practice in diamond drilling for production at various mines throughout the United States. It describes the drilling and blasting methods, used at the Tennessee Copper Co., which started using deep-hole drilling for blasting in 1927, employing inde- pendent, rotation percussion drills with sectional drill steel. Since 1942 the company has employed diamond drills for deep-hole drilling. This method has now passed the experimental stage and promises to become permanent. The elimination of rock dust and safer working conditions for the drill crews are listed as the main advantages. The higher initial cost of equip- ment is the principal disadvantage.

Major activities of the Bureau of Mines Explosives Research Center during fiscal year 1966 (July 1, 1965 to June 30, 1966) are reviewed briefly. Part 1 summarizes significant accomplishments of the projects that were active during the report period. Part 2 presents short abstracts of the publications that appeared in the Bureau series and in other media during fiscal year 1966. Publications issued after June 30, 1966, are noted where pertinent in foot- notes but are not abstracted. The hazards to the public posed by abandoned mine shafts are well documented. As private development encroaches on previously mined areas, the potential for fatalities and serious injuries from abandoned mine shafts increases. The U.S. Bureau of Mines has conducted research into cellular concrete as a material for sealing these openings. The current work involves testing the characteristics of cellular concrete before and after it had been pumped or dropped from different heights into a simulated mine shaft. Cellular concrete was pumped vertically up to and subsequently dropped from heights of 18 and 37 m into concrete forms. Wet density measurements were made at multiple sampling points in the test circuit. Air content determinations and uniaxial compressive strength testing were conducted. Research results showed significant loss in air content and changes in the characteristics of cellular concrete during pumping or dropping from various heights. Recommendations on effective use of cellular concrete for sealing abandoned mine shafts are made.

"OIL EXPLORATION in Western Canada has produced outstanding results in the past few years. From such successes as Leduc and Redwater on the western plains, oilmen are now moving north in the ever-widening search for oil. They are reaching new frontiers and meeting new problems presented by this vast hinterland.One of the least known but most troublesome phenomena which will be encountered is permafrost. This term relates to a thickness of soil or other superficial deposit, or even of bed-rock at variable depths beneath the surface, in which a temperature below freezing has continually existed .for a long time. This permanently frozen ground affects, in many ways, oil exploration and exploitation. Seismic records are changed, pipe lines cannot easily be ditched into the ground, formation of wax is speeded-up in tubing and pipe lines, roads are difficult to build, and foundations of buildings and even of drilling 'rigs may require entirely new methods of construction.Permafrost underlies roughly one-fifth of the entire 'land surface of the world. It covers the northerly portions of Eurasia and North America. In the area that we are here concerned with, the southern boundary of permafrost extends south of east from about latitude 59°N. on the Pacific coast across the Rocky mountains, through Great Slave and Athabasca lakes, to cape Henrietta Maria, at the junction of Hudson bay and James bay (see Figure 1). Geologists generally agree that permafrost first appeared in the Pleistocene or Ice Age as the result of abnormal ground freezing."
