"The importers and manufacturers who import or produce products with packaging containers are charged a recycling fee in Taiwan. The amount of waste packaging containers used for calculating the recycling charge is based upon the amount declared by importers and manufacturers which might be underestimated. This study aims to estimate the amount of waste packaging containers generated by households in Taiwan and also explores its distribution. The sampling survey and ratio estimation are conducted for estimating the recycled amount; while the refuse sampling method for municipal solid waste composition is employed to estimate the un-recycled waste packaging containers. The estimated total amount of waste packaging containers in 2011 generated by households in Taiwan is 696,511 m.t., of which, 79.49% of the waste packaging containers were recycled and 20.51 % were landfilled or incinerated. This study shows that the amount of waste packaging containers declared by importers and producers is underestimated around 20%.IntroductionWaste packaging containers including iron cans, aluminum cans, glass bottles, plastic containers, paper containers, aluminum foiled paper packs are officially announced to be recycled in Taiwan. In order to create the economic incentive for raising recycling performance, associated manufacturers and importers are charged a recycling fee to subsidize recyclers. The amount of packaging containers declared by importers and manufacturers is used for calculating the recycling charge and recycling rate. The importers and manufacturers might underreport their producing (importing) amount to pay less recycling fees. Therefore, the estimated waste packaging containers based upon the amount declared by importers and manufacturers is usually underestimated. Related previous studies about waste packaging containers recycling in Taiwan are done by Hsu and co-workers [1-4]. Hsu and Kuo [1] estimated total production values of recycling and evaluated the performance of recycling performance based upon the estimated production values. Hsu and Liu [5] provided a cost analysis of recycling for waste packaging containers in Taiwan. Bor, Chien, and Hsu [2] presented a market-incentive recycling system for waste packaging containers in Taiwan. Hsu and Kuo [4] provided an amending mechanism for product charge and recycling subsidy in response to the social economic changes for waste packaging containers recycling. Lee and Hsu [ 6, 7] explored the distribution, fee rates, and collection rate of waste containers. This study aims to estimate the amount of waste packaging containers generated by households in Taiwan and also explore its distribution."

Microscopic point-count analyses, although time-consuming, provide detailed mineralogical information which is not obtainable by any other means. Such information can be invaluable for evaluating mill circuit behavior. In comparing two months of operation of a Cu-Pb-Zn sulfide flotation circuit, chemical analyses show that higher copper recoveries and concentrate grades were obtained from lower grade ore, but they provide no explanation of how the improvements were obtained. Quantitative micro-scopic analyses, on the other hand, show the following: 1. There was no change in the identity of the Cu-bearing minerals. 2. Increased copper recovery was achieved primarily by increased recovery of chalcopyrite middling particles. 3. The increased recovery of chalcopyrite middling particles also increased the amount of gangue entrained as locked particles. 4. Increased rejection of free gangue particles, particularly those finer than 25 microns in size, resulted in a net decrease in gangue content.

The Fairbanks mining district has produced in excess of 7.5 million troy ounces of placer gold and 250,000 troy ounces of lode gold since gold was discovered in the area in 1902. The Fairbanks mining district is in the northwestern part of the Yukon-Tanana Upland Schist Terrane, an area of approximately 240,000 square km that has produced in excess of 21 million troy ounces of placer gold. All lode gold production from the terrane has been from the Fairbanks mining district, and all of this production has come from high-grade gold-quartz polymetallic sulfide veins. Gold grains in the vein systems range in size from several microns to several millimeters. The veins are localized in a complex metamorphic rock assemblage which includes greenstones and felsic metavolcanic and volcaniclastic rocks, meta-exhalatives and metasediments. Gold occurs in the metamorphic host rocks in association with arsenopyrite and arsenic-antimony sulfides which occur in lenses and disseminations within the host rock. Gold grains occurring in the metamorphic host rocks range. in size from sub-micron to a few microns in diameter.

Onahama Smelter of Onahama Smelting & Refining Co., Ltd. has two green- charge reverberatory furnaces; the old furnace was constructed in 1965 and the new one in 1973. This paper discusses the use of oxygen-oil burners in a green-charge reverberatory furnace and also compares the copper loss in slag between the two furnaces at Onahama Smelter. During the past ten years of operation, no shutdowns of the old furnace were necessary and the smelting capacity was increased by 25% by the use of two oxygen-oil burners. These burners are suitable for a green-charge reverberatory furnace to in- crease the smelting capacity without causing an increase of the exhaust gas volume and refractory erosion. After two years of operation of the old furnace, a bottom build-up in the charging zone of approximately 50 centimeters was experienced, and this build-up has stayed at this level since then. In 1973, a new additional reverberatory furnace was put into operation. Copper content in slag of the new furnace was lower by approximately 0.15% than that of the old one during the first several months after the start-up. Investigations were then made on the effect of the bottom conditions in the charging zone on the copper content in slag.

ZrB2 and TiB2 are one of the most significant metal borides. They are being used in various industrial areas from space technology to nuclear industry owing to their physical properties such as high melting point, high thermal/electrical conductivity and low density. Present study was conducted in two main stages: Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) reactions and leaching. ZrO2, TiO2, B2O3 were used as starting material and Mg used as a reductant to produce ZrB2-TiB2 powders via SHS. Therefore, it was aimed to determine production parameters, leaching conditions and comprehensive examination of final product features. The majority of copper in the raw material migrates to the de-copperized dross that forms when the crude lead produced in the blast furnace is treated in the de-copperizing process. The de-copperized dross is treated in the electric furnace producing matte, speiss, and crude lead. The de-copperized dross also contains the silver. Therefore, it is important to improve the rate of silver migration to the crude lead. For this reason, the behavior of silver between the matte, speiss and crude lead phases was examined. At the same time, several tests to improve the percentage of silver migrating to crude lead were conducted.

To analyze the behavior of minor elements in the copper smelting process, the phase relations and the activities of arsenic and antimony in the miscibility gap of Cu-Fe-S-X (X = As or Sb) system have been determined at 1473K by the quenching method and the double Knudsen cell- mass spectrometric method, respectively. The experiments have been conducted for the charges in the miscibility gap with different mass%Fe/mass%Cu ratios with varying arsenic or antimony content. The activity measurements indicate that the arsenic activities in both the metal and matte phases show extremely negative deviation from the ideal behavior. The Raoultian activity coefficients at infinite dilution in the metal and matte phases are found to be almost constant against the charges in the miscibility gap, and they are 4.3 x 10-3 and 5.5 x 10-2 for the metal and matte phases, respectively. Moreover, the activity measurements of antimony show an activity value larger than that of arsenic but it still deviates negatively from Raoult's law. The activity coefficients of antimony at infinite dilution are found to be 1.2 x and 2.2 x 10-1 for the metal and matte phases, respectively. The vapor pressures of the predominant As, AS2, AsS, Sb, Sb2, and SbS species in the gas phases of arsenic and antimony, respectively, equilibrated with the immiscible solutions have been calculated on the basis of the determined activity coefficients and they are very small at less than 1 Pa, even when their contents in the metal phase are increased up to 10 mass%.

The microwave power absorption characteristics of iron oxides, including Fe2O3, Fe3O4 and Fe0.925O, have been studied by determining dielectric loss and magnetic loss distributions in 0.05-m-thick oxide slabs irradiated with 1.2-kW, 2.45-GHz microwaves. The results reveal that the dielectric loss is the main factor contributing to microwave absorption in Fe2O3 and Fe0.925O, while the magnetic loss dominates the power absorption in Fe3O4 below its Curie point. Uneven power distributions are observed in the slabs and this phenomenon becomes even worse at high temperatures at which the permittivity increases significantly. Quantification of power absorption in the oxides is of great importance for efficient and uniform microwave heating

The ignition of chalcopyrite and pyrite was studied using laminar flow furnace and thermal analysis techniques which were supported by XRD and optical microscopic examination of the products. In air, chalcopyrite and pyrite ignited at temperatures of 400-500'C and 500-600?C respectively. The phase assemblages predicted from thermodynamic analyses were compared with those found by experiment, and the onset of ignition was correlated against changes in the phase compositions. Pyrite and chalcopyrite ignited when pyrrhotite and intermediate solid solution formed thus opening up the structure and allowing ready access of oxygen.

A new method to process the oolitic high phosphorus iron ore for phosphorus removal has been proposed in this research. It is an integration of direct reduction and melting separation with carbon-containing pellets prepared using biomass char. Experiments of direct reduction were preceded using a tubular furnace and three parameters were investigated and they were reduction temperature, biomass char adding ratio(molar ratio of carbon to oxygen） and atmosphere. Results show that the optimum condition is of reduction temperature is 1373 K, biomass adding ratio 0.9, PCO2/PCO 1.0 and reduction time 15~25 min. Under this condition, the reduced briquettes with a metallization of 75.0~80.0 % and a residual carbon content of 0.69~0.11 wt% could be obtained. Subsequent melting separation experiments were conducted using a Si-Mo high temperature furnace. Results show metal with phosphorus content of about 0.4 mass% could be obtained from the reduced sample.

Environmental control is becoming more and more stringent. As conventional processes for zinc production are pollutant routes, alternative methods have become an important subject of research. In this regard, the leaching processes have aroused a considerable interest, namely the electrochemically induced approach. The behaviour of zinc concentrate ore in the leaching processesses is influenced by several parameters. Chloride concentration and leaching solution pH, time and temperature of reaction were studied in order to evaluate their influence on the zinc recovery. The efficiency of the leaching process for zinc extraction is performed by factorial design. The experiments were carried out by 23 and 22 factorial designs of the factors. Results show that all factors, except for the time of reaction have a significant influence on the optimisation process, within each experimental region.

This paper discusses modifications made to the original process equipment to overcome design flaws as well as future design changes currently under consideration.

Mineralogical and metallurgical scoping testwork were carried out to investigate the production of separate, marketable gold and platinum concentrates. The study utilized a flotation concentrate assaying approximately 5 wt% gold and 5 grams per tonne platinum. The gold-platinum mineralization was recovered from a placer deposit. Optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive x-ray analysis identified gold as zoned Au- Ag and Au-Ag-Cu alloys. Platinum primarily occurred as weakly zoned, variably magnetic Pt- Pd-Fe alloys. A combination of gravity and magnetic separations resulted in a gold concentrate grading 86.9 wt% Au (and 9.lwt% Ag) and a separate platinum concentrate grading 400 g/t Pt with recoveries of 94.5% and 96.7%, respectively. Magnetohydrostatic separation (MHS) using the Magstream 200 Separator indicated promising results.

Nippon Mining and Metals Company has an annual indium production capacity of 30 tons at its Saganoseki smelter and refinery. Lately, indium content in the. zinc smelting dust, one of the main sources, has been on the decrease while the amount of impurity in it on the increase. The present process at Saganoseki does not permit efficient elimination of a large. amount of impurity. Therefore, studies were conducted to improve its recovery process. As a result, a new indium recovery process consisting of leaching, solvent extraction and electrowinning has been developed. The new process was tested at a pilot plant and satisfactory results were obtained. This new process is discussed in this paper.
