INTRODUCTION Rapid transit systems involving near surface tunneling in hard rock are becoming more numerous, especially along the northeast corridor of the East Coast. Tunneled systems are under construction in Washington, D.C. and are being planned for Atlanta, Buffalo and Baltimore. Near surface tunneling is defined for this paper as being that in which the crown is 100 feet or less below ground surface. For Rosslyn Station, the total cover ranged from 52 to 70 feet. The rock cover, however, ranged from 40 to 50 feet which is slightly less than the station height and about two-thirds of its width. Rosslyn Station (Fig. 1) is the only station excavated completely in hard rock in the Virginia portion of the 98.5 mile Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority's (WMATA) rapid transit system. The station site, oriented in a north-south direction beneath a main thoroughfare and flanked by multistory office buildings, was fixed by the need to serve a dense population center at a specific location and geologic conditions were a secondary consideration in siting. There was no previous underground rock excavation in the Washington Metropolitan Area of the size and scope of Rosslyn Station that offered a practical case history guide to the geologic conditions and excavation problems to be encountered. The Mount Royal Tunnel (MRT) is a 100-year-old railway tunnel located in Montreal, Canada. The tunnel is approximately 5 km long, 8.7 m wide and 5.5 m high, with a constant 0.6% grade. This existing tunnel will be used by the new Montreal light rail transit network, Réseau Express Métropolitain (REM). This requires the tunnel to be inspected, rehabilitated and made compliant to the recent safety standards. This paper presents the details of the structural inspection and rehabilitation of the tunnel along with the repair methods, addition of a center wall as well as the enlargement of the tunnel section.

The integrity of unconventional shale gas well casings positioned in the abutment pillar of a longwall mine could be jeopardized by longwall-induced deformations. Under such scenarios, the surrounding fracture networks could provide pathways for gas flow into the mine creating safety concerns. To provide recommendations for developing guidelines that ensure a safe co-existence of longwall mining and unconventional shale gas production, this study evaluates the impact of parameters that could affect potential shale gas flow into the mine in the event of a casing breach using a discrete fracture network (DFN) model. These parameters are evaluated using a conceptualized DFN realization that is representative of the fractured zone in the overburden, and the range of parameter variations is within values validated with field measurements. The results show that a decrease in fracture aperture (potentially due to longwall-induced stress in the likely vicinity of the breach location) reduces the potential gas flow to the mine by a significantly higher proportion. A 50% decrease in the aperture of the fracture that directly transports the gas from the casing breach location reduces the gas flow to the mine by over 70%. Similarly, changes in the fracture water saturation level significantly affect the gas flow. In all cases, the potential gas flow to the mine is higher if the casing breach occurs at an increased gas well pressure. These findings provide critical information regarding the impact of each of the parameters associated with gas flow in the event of a shale gas casing breach near a longwall mine and could help towards the development of guidelines to ensure a safe coexistence of both industries.

This paper will describe the copper concentrate slurry pipeline and pumping system between the concentrator and the port at Bougainville Copper Ltd. The operations of Bougainville Copper Ltd. are located on the island of Bougainville in the South Pacific. Geographically, it is the northernmost island of the Solomon Group but, politically, it is part of Papua New Guinea. Papua New Guinea is a United Nations Trust territory administered by Australia, having recently been given self-government, with independence scheduled for December 1974. (Fig. 1). The island is approximately 130 miles long by 30 miles wide, with the Crown Prince mountain range forming a spine along its length. The mountains in place are over 8,000 feet high with the mine located on the western flank at an elevation of 2,200 feet. Exploration on Bougainville for copper by Conzinc Riotinto of Australia (CRA) began in 1963 and by 1968, through geophysical, geochemical and diamond drilling methods, an orebody containing nearly one billion tons of ore grading approximately 0.48% Cu. and sane gold had been outlined. Bougainville Copper Ltd., the company operating the mine, is 53.6% wined by CRA, 20% mined by the government of Papua New Guinea with the public Folding the remainder of the shares. Correct face pressure is critical to safe operation of a closed face TBM. If inadequate face pressure is applied, this will lead to excessive ground movement, and may result in collapse of the tunnel face. Face pressure calculations are performed manually every few meters along the tunnel alignment. With the application of a 3D ground model, ground profile information can be extracted for automatic computation. This will significantly improve the efficiency and accuracy and is adaptable to changes in design parameters. This paper will discuss the development of automatic computation techniques in extracting information from a 3D ground model.

Groundwater flow in bedrock units is an important factor to be considered for most mining situations, both underground and open pit excavations. Characterization of the hydrogeologic system into which a mine will advance is an important factor for slope and entry stability, mine dewatering design, and potential environmental considerations including stream loss and water well damage. In addition, hydrogeologic characterization of bedrock is important for locating water wells and for groundwater contamination mitigation. Hydrogeologic characterization for a site begins with a desktop study and often evolves to include drilling, geologic logging, monitoring well installation, groundwater sampling, pump testing, and packer (Lugeon) testing. In addition to these methods of hydrogeologic data collection, downhole geophysical logging of exploration and monitoring well boreholes provides detailed information associated specifically with in-situ conditions of each hole. The basic suite of geophysical logging tools used for hydrogeologic characterization often includes Optical or Acoustic Televiewer (O/ATV), full wave sonic, gamma-density, fluid temperature, resistivity, specific conductance, and flowmeter. For many hydrogeologic settings, groundwater flow in the bedrock is dominated by discontinuities, or fractures, in the rock. O/ATV logging allows for determination of the frequency (clustering), orientation, and aperture width of in-situ fractures, while sonic logging allows for estimation of intact rock strength. Fluid temperature logging and flowmeter measurements provide insight with regard to potential groundwater inflow zones, and other tools provide information for geologic unit contacts. This paper outlines the process and benefits of using downhole geophysical logging for hydrogeologic characterization and provides generalized examples from industry experience.

The operation of an electrolytic refining tank house is an art as well as a science. If the electro-refining industry is to progress, a better understanding of the refining process is necessary. This would help to reduce the amount of training necessary to produce competent tank house operators who, in turn, would be able to increase both quantity and quality of the tank house product. To aid in understanding this process, quantitative relationships between the critical tank house variables must be established. The inherent major contributor to inefficiency in most tank houses is short circuits. By quantifying the effect of short circuits on each of the other variables in the system, as well as their effect on over- all system performance, better decisions regarding manpower allocation can be made. Current distribution under short circuit conditions, which has always been somewhat of a mystery, can be studied in detail. The relative importance of electrolyte balance, proper anode-cathode spacing, low contact resistance at points of electrical connection, and other system variables can be determined, With a better understanding of these variables, the steps necessary to increase current efficiency are more easily defined. Relationships between most of these variables are described in qualitative terms in the literature, but quantitative relationships between tank house variables have never been established. A realistic mathematical model of the tank house could be used to test the effect of variations in a single variable on other variables in the system, and thus define the quantitative relationships between tank house variables. It is not the purpose of this paper to establish these relationships, but to describe a recently developed model that can assist in their establishment. A computer program implementing this model has been applied to examine the effect of short circuits on overall current distribution. Some of the results are given here as examples of the utility of this program.

Here we read where the mighty Sampson removed the pillars from beneath the prison house causing the collapse of the structure resulting in his own death along with the deaths of the 3,000 Philistine occupants. Our problems at the Mi Vida Mine differ somewhat from those of Sampson of old, in that it is our aim first to remove the pillars and get out from under the back before the "house falls in" and, secondly, to remove the pillars without the lose of a single life or without even a single casualty. The importance of mineralogical and chemical characterization of fine particles in the fields of mineral and metallurgical processing is discussed. Emphasis is placed on electron beam analysis techniques including electron diffraction and energy dispersive analysis with special reference to the scanning trans- mission electron microscope. The correct choice of instrument depending upon particle size, composition and nature of sample is stressed and the analytica1 capabilities of different types of instruments are evaluated. Recent applications of electron beam equipment to processing problems are presented and the paper concludes with a review of new developments in the fields of surface analysis and micro-diffraction.

After World War I the character of my mining life changed completely. Before then adventure had been almost continuous but after the war there was lots of staying in one place, almost routine, between adventures. This was fortunate, as the life of a mining engineer is a wandering one at best, and it makes being married and raising a family a dubious enterprise. It would have been quite out of the question with the life I led before I got married at the end of the war The new sort of life made the "beaconing of adventure" intermittent. There were often long stays at home between wanderings which was fortunate as it changed the continuity of these memories. I must briefly summarize accounts of the more or less routine periods and concentrate on the occasional exciting episodes between. After a long visit with friends in Berkeley, Dorothy and I left for Arizona and three days at the Grand Canyon that were nearly too much for both of us. One beautiful day we started a short walk down the Bright Angel Trail. It was such a lovely bracing day that we kept on walking and enjoying the views until, just after noon, we reached the Colorado River. We were the only ones in sight so to enjoy the sunshine to the full we both had a good swim in the swiftly flowing river. So far, everything was wonderful. But when we started to climb back up the trail, rising nearly 6000 ft in ten miles we soon found that we had counted too much on our youth and endurance. We had to rest every few hundred feet and it seemed as though we would never reach the top. It was eight o'clock in the evening when we finally staggered into our room and collapsed. On the way to the Canyon I had seen John Greenway and Dr. Ricketts in Santa Barbara and they had little idea what would happen to them or to me. Before resuming his position as general manager of Calumet and Arizona and New Cornelia, Greenway must recover from the effects of the gas he had suffered in the war. Dr. Ricketts

"The tunnel sector is excavated into a rock mass heavily affected by tectonics, defined as a regional fault. The rock around the tunnel support undertakes the non – elastic deformation and gradually detaches from the rest of the non affected rock mass, moving inside of the excavated area and tending to fill up the whole space. The initial solution of using stiff support consisting in double steel ribs I12 with circular shape in the upper part and straight vertical pillars in the lower part has proved to be inadequate. Based on the calculations of the subsidence phenomena and a mathematical model, the proposed alternative support was provided by special circular steel ribs – SG-23 –that allows a limited rib deformation (by relative slip between the arch segments) in order to mobilize the contact between the rock contour and the inner face of the rib - not only for the deformed rib but also for the neighboring ribs. 1. INTRODUCTION Hydropower development of Jiu river in Romania, in the narrow gorge sector includes two diversion HPP and a small hydro plant that provides the minimum required flow downstream: CHE Dumitra , CHE Bumbesti and MHC Livezeni (Table 1. Hydropower parameters).The Livezeni intake reservoir is provided by a gated dam located 1250 m downstream of merging point between Jiul de Vest river and Jiul de Est river. The dam is equipped with three radial gates with flap gates with a span of 12 m each and the height of (6 + 3) m. The effectiveness of the grouting of saturated, fractured rock in the vicinity of underground workings depends to a great extent on the correct interpretation of the specific hydrogeological conditions at the site. During the planning of grouting operations, calculations of the hydrogeologic co-efficients and of the parameters of the isolating grout curtain(s) and the procedures for forming the curtain(s) must be based on valid hydrogeologic characteristics of the fracture system of the rock within each hydrostratigraphic unit (Anon., 1976). This chapter presents a discussion of the background information that must be collected for these purposes. Details of testing are presented in Chapter 3. The general design of new or the reconstruction of existing underground workings requires a broadly based organization having the expertise to develop a grouting operations plan once it acquires the necessary information. The needed information includes: 1) general information about the hydrogeologic section, 2) the engineering design of the underground workings, 3) the geology of the region, 4) the hydrochemistry of the ground water, 5) the hydraulic properties of the rock, 6) the characterization of all gases present, and 7) characterization of the rock's physical-mechanical properties which is necessary to avoid or control hydrofracturing . The geological documentation portion of the hydrogeological investigation is prepared based on the results of geologic mapping, geophysical surveys and on geo-exploratory operations at a regional and local scale. Geological data from the excavation of other underground workings in adjacent areas of the region is also included. Finally the results of site specific investigations in boreholes constructed at the site of the proposed underground activity are incorporated. A section of the preliminary report entitled "General Information about the Project Site" patterned after the parent STG guidance document on this subject must be com- piled based on the contents of geological reports and on the general construction plan for a new project or the plan for reconstruction of an existing operation. This section of the preliminary report must contain concise information about the conditions under which the planned grouting operations are to be conducted. The information must cover the geo- graphic, administrative, and economic subject areas also. Information about sources of electrical power, heat and water supplies, the presence and characteristics of local construction materials suitable for making grout (particularly clay and cement for the clay-based grout), transportation, and the status of communication lines and other services must be included in this section. Map scales for this section should be on the order of 1:25,000. The technical characterization of planned underground workings is presented in a project report chapter called "General Construction Plan for a New or the Restoration of an Old Operation. " The characterization comprises concise information about the purpose of the workings, the planned depths (for shafts) and the length (for horizontal and inclined workings), the inside and excavated diameters (for shafts), the cross-sectional area (for inclined and horizontal workings), and the face and mouth markers. If excavated underground workings exist in the region, then a concise description of them must be provided. The characterization of all excavations and all operational conditions must be specified. The location within the general structure of the proposed operation is specified. Flow charts must be included in this section that show: 1) the plan for opening the deposit, 2) the plans of the mining operations, and 3) the planned geological sections as they relate to the main workings. These graphical flow charts and appendices are drawn in scales of 1:2000 or 1:5000. 2.1 GEOLOGICAL CHARACTERIZATION The geological characterization of a site of proposed underground workings includes the following principal subject areas: stratigraphy, lithology, structural geology and a characterization of the status of fracturing. 2.1.1 STRATIGRAPHY AND LITHOLOGY A description of the geological section of the rocks to be intersected by the planned underground workings is complied on the basis of: 1) research data derived from core extracted from exploratory boreholes and monitoring boreholes, 2) the documentation and mapping of all natural out- crops in the region, 3) the data from all existing under-ground workings in the regions where operations are being canied out already, along with data from adjacent regions, 4) the data from surface and borehole geophysical investigations (standard and specially developed logging methods, and 5) regional stratigraphy. The geological description of the rock must express the maximum detail possible. The description provides the name of the rock, the granulometric composition (for fragmented rock), the composition and type of stratification, the drilling characteristics of the rock, a visual estimate of porosity and density for each stratum identified, the karstic

An availability approach for determining the capacity of a major Bucket Wheel Excavator (BWE) system to be used in the Yuabaoshan Surface Coal Mine in China is presented in this paper. Based on previous studies on other BWE systems for delay times due to internal and external causes and a four-level maintenance and repair schedule, a model was developed, taking into account all random failures, to present a fast and simple solution to this highly complex problem. A procedure employing the Markov renewal theory for determination of the distribution of random failure times and failure rate of the whole system, as well as some other factors useful for calculation of the overall system capacity, are discussed.

Advances in borehole geophysical research for mineral assaying, and remote detection of mineralization away from the borehole. Nuclear activation measurement research has provided accurate in situ assays of economic metals with neutron-gamma activation, using a high resolution intrinsic-germanium detector. Although nuclear activation analysis is the present "best-hope" for obtaining in situ assays for some elements, gamma-gamma and magnetic susceptibility measurements can provide accurate assays for lead-zinc and magnetite, respectively. Borehole optical spectroscopy and x-ray fluorescence are being investigated as possible in situ assaying techniques for some minerals. More laboratory and field calibration research is needed before nonlinear complex resistivity (NLCR) can be routinely used as a quantitative assaying tool. Field tests have shown that variations in the local geologic environment can affect the quantitative accuracy of assay values from downhole NLCR measurements. Deeply penetrating borehole geophysical methods are increasingly being used for mineral exploration as drilling costs and exploration have increased. Borehole electrical measurements have been shown to be useful for detecting conductive orebodies that are not interesected by a drillhole. Hole-to-surface resistivity, and surface-to-hole time-domain electromagnetics are demonstrated to be particularly effective for defining mineralized zones in a massive sulfide environment. Borehole gravity meters and three-component magnetometers have been developed and should prove useful for defining geologic anomalies away from the drillhole.

More and more mining underground is being conducted using the longwall method. Likewise, many new surface mines use area or mountaintop removal methods. These methods can have a significant impact on surface and groundwater resources. The overall study of the effects on surface and groundwater from mining is referred to as the probable hydrologic consequences (PHC) determination of mining and reclamation. Collection and interpretation of information concerning groundwater and surface water quality and quantity, as well as detailed geologic analysis, is required to adequately define the impacts of mining. This paper discusses the present day requirements and methodology of preparing a PHC for a large mining operation in the eastern coalfields.

The use of EPB shields in the so-called mixed face conditions has set new demands to man and machine in EPB shield tunneling. EPB shields were initially conceived to drive in the pressurized closed mode in soft ground, whereas hard rock TBMs were designed to work in the unpressurized open mode. The present use of EPB shields in hard rock and mixed face conditions requires the combination of both technologies by finding best compromise solutions. This paper deals firstly with the geotechnical and mechanical interactions between machine and ground. Further on the critical points such as tool wear and tool replacement are exposed, together with a proposal of best solutions.

Surface dependent processes, such as froth flotation and flocculation, are important or potentially important techniques for combating some of the current major problems in coal preparation. In order to correctly apply or imporve a surface dependent process, it is of paramount importance to understand the interfacial phenomenon, especially the double layer properties, exhibited by the solid. The specific objective of this research was to determine the properties of the bituminous coal/liquid interface by an electrokinetic method, streaming potential, and to relate the findings, wherever possible, to the existing unit operations of froth flotation and flocculation. The electrokinetic properties of both the whole coal and its lithotypes were investigated. As part of the total investigation, the role played in the double layer by the reagents commonly employed in the surface dependent process was also established (1). These data will be presented at a latter date.
