Hydraulic cylinders a re used in several roof support systems, such as longwall shields and mobile roof supports, to provide critical ground control Many state-of-the-art hydraulic support systems operate at pressures as high as 7,000 psi to provide the necessary support capacities. Pressure in the upper stages of multi-stage cylinders can be intensified by a factor of 2 or 3 providing pressures of 20,000 psi or greater. A proper understanding of the operation of these high pressure systems is necessary to safely maintain and repair these support systems. Likewise, the performance characteristics need to be fully understood to evaluate the impact of design parameters on the capability of the support to maintain effective ground control. This paper examines the basic operating principles of state-of-the-art hydraulic cylinders and discusses relative issues pertaining to. (1) setting loads, (2) support stiffness, (3) yielding behavior, (4) errors in assessing support loading, and (S) hydraulic failure mechanisms and how to detect them

This U.S. Bureau of Mines report presents a study of three typical tailings samples as potential cemented backfill in underground mines. The testing series was unique in that the pulp densities of the samples were all above 75 pct solids. Test results included dry density; slump; percent settling after 28 days of curing; tensile strength after 28, 120, and 180 days of curing; and unconfined compressive strengths after 7, 28, 120, and 180 days of curing. The physical properties of the various test mixtures were further analyzed using linear and nonlinear statistical methods to produce correlations and mathematical equations. Physical properties were used to determine the influence of mix additives and as input for numerical modeling studies of backfill. The mathematical relations were used as a predictive tool in determining the suitability of various materials as backfill.

Perform laboratory tests to measure the vibration attenuation characteristics of off-road vehicle operator seats for various types of seat suspensions, cushions, and seat adjustment settings. Background A study was conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine the probability of whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure for a large class of off-road machinery operating in surface coal mines. The study determined that mere than 40 pct of off-road equipment operators were exposed to WBV exceeding the standard fatigue-decreased-proficiency (FDP) level defined by the International Standards Organization in its guideline ISO standard 2631. The tire-terrain interaction of a moving vehicle generates vibrations that are transmitted through the ve¬hicle suspension, cab mounting, and seat. The final point of transmission of vehicle vibration to the operator is through the scat. A seat that provides good vibration isolation and allows good vehicle control is of prime importance to operator safety and health.

Objective To accurately measure very low air velocities (0-100 ft/min) in U.S. large-opening underground metal/nonmetal mines. Background Hundreds of metal/nonmetal underground mines operate throughout the United States. They extract commercial products from deposits such as limestone, salt, and gypsum. Mining generates a wide variety of gases and dusts, such as silica, diesel exhaust, radon, blasting byproducts, and perhaps even methane. If these substances become airborne, they can adversely affect the health and safety of underground workers. Many metal/nonmetal mines have large cross-sectional airways that could be 60 times larger than an average underground coal mine entry. These large airways require adequate volumes of fresh air to dilute, make harmless, and exhaust the toxic and, at times, explosive byproducts. However, in some underground mine sections, air movement is barely perceptible. The technology of measuring very low air velocities will become increasingly more important for operators of large-opening stone mines in order to monitor miner exposure to diesel particulate matter. Conventional anemometers (e.g., vane) are capable of accurately measuring air velocities only above 100 ft/min. Thus, it was necessary to investigate other anemometry technology to detect low air velocities in the range of 0-100 ft/min. Two different portable ultrasonic anemometers were tested. Actual testing was done in an underground limestone mine with openings about 51 ft wide by 29 ft high. Ultrasonic Anemometers Vane-type anemometers are commonly used by engineering personnel throughout the underground coal mine industry. They work well in measuring air velocities >100 ft/min. However, a separate technology, e.g., portable ultrasonics, is needed to measure air velocities much below 100 ft/min at various places within the large mine opening. Laser-doppler technology was also considered for this application, but was ruled out because of its high cost and other technical limitations. With no moving parts, the portable ultrasonic anemometers are claimed to be accurate down to about 1or 2 ft/min. The first type of ultrasonic anemometer that was examined underground is manufactured by Gill Instruments Ltd., Hampshire, U.K. The U.S. distributor is IN USA, Needham, MA. The Gill Instruments Solent Volometer (figure 1) is a battery-powered, single-axis anemometer meant for measuring low to medium air flows up to1,999 ft/min. It uses the ultrasonic "time of flight" principle where pulses of high-frequency sound are transmitted along the air flow path and the time taken to reach the receiver is measured. The faster the air speed, the quicker the pulses reach the receiver. The second ultrasonic anemometer that was examined under-ground is manufactured by Airflow Developments Ltd., Buckinghamshire, U.K. The U.S. distributor is Airflow Technical Products, Inc., Andover, NJ. The Anemosonic UA-6 (figure 2) is a battery-powered, handheld instrument with digital display. It measures air velocity (0 to 9,999 ft/min) or volume flow, flow turbulence intensity, and air temperature. Neither device is considered to be intrinsically safe for use in underground gassy coal mines. A comparison of salient specifications of both instruments is shown in table 1. The total suspended weight includes the instrument (Gill) or instrument probe (Airflow) plus about 35 ft of connecting cable attached to the pole. This combination of instrument plus cable length allows two operators to measure air velocities up to about 30 ft above the mine floor. Figures 1 and 2 show how each unit would be attached to an extensible, graduated fiberglass rod in order to position the sensor probe at a certain spatial point (centroid of the quadrate) within the underground large opening.

Ear Mountain is an isolated mountain mass that rises abruptly from the coastal plain on the northwest shore of the Seward Peninsula. Geologically it resembles the more accessible Brooks Mountain and Cape Mountain areas to the southwest, being composed of a granitic core surrounded and partly capped by metamorphosed sediments. The occurrence of lode- and placer-tin deposits in this area has been known since the early 1900's, when the Seward Peninsula region was prospected extensively for both gold and tin. The Federal Bureau of Mines investigated the tin deposits in the Ear Mountain area during the 1953 and 1954 field seasons. The objectives were to delimit the areas in which tin minerals occur, as a guide to future prospecting, and to determine the amount of tin in the known prospects. Work by the Bureau of Mines included both placer and lode sampling.

Provide an environmentally compatible means of producing lead from galena concentrates that replaces the current high-temperature pyrometallurgical primary lead smelting process and supplies pure lead metal within present and proposed Environmental Protection Agency (FPA) and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) lead emission standards. Approach The U.S. Bureau of Mines developed an energy efficient and pollution-free leach-electrowinning method for use in recovering pure lead metal and byproducts from lead sulfide concentrates.

This report has presented a literature review of explosion proof¬ing of coal mine electrical equipment. The international "state-of¬the-art" is an extremely difficult definition to quantify but, from the preceding paragraphs, it is evident the international community be¬lieves that it is represented by the International Electrotechnical Commission's Publications. Five questions were set forth during the beginning of this report. Each will be evaluated in light of the preceding discussion. 1. Can Schedule 2G specifications on explosion-proof containers be substantiated? Literature was found in the three main problem areas, surface temperature, mechanical strength, and explosion transmission, to determine this. Surface temperature requirements are adequate except for equipment that can normally overload, and the required intern¬al pressure does afford some margin of safety. However, in terms of safety, gap dimensions are about ten times smaller than that needed. 2. Is it possible to replace the Schedule's design requirements with performance specifications? Two primary areas were determined as mechanical strength and explosion transmission. As was mentioned, for present flange and gap standards, the 150 psig requirement is adequate. Furthermore, it is the authors' opinion that the level cannot be re¬duced if the present gap requirements are retained. The Schedule now requires that 16 tests be run, but the literature suggests that only from three to six examinations are necessary. An explanation for this unique behavior is given, through means of an analogy, which should promote intuitive understanding of ground beds. The nonmathematical development of the text is complemented by an extensive appendix which describes the details of ground bed calculations. "Electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements show that grinding of quartz particles in air produces silicon-based (Si- and SiO-) radicals which decay with aging in air. ESR spin trapping measurements provide evidence for the generation of hydroxyl and possibly superoxide radicals from a suspension of fresh quartz particles. The hydroxyl radical generation potential of the fresh quartz particles decreases on storing in ambient air and on the addition of catalase, superoxide dismutase, desferoxamine, or DMSO. Silica-induced lipid peroxidation also decreases on storing the fresh particles in ambient air. These findings suggest that oxygenated radicals play a role in the biochemical mechanism of pneumoconiosis in general and acute silicosis in particular.INTRODUCTIONThis communication summarizes our electron spin resonance (ESR) investigation of the formation of oxygenated radicals by freshly crushed quartz particles in a cell-free aqueous medium, and its potential role in the biochemical mechanism of acute silicosis. This study was undertaken because the mechanisms by which the quartz particles exert their toxic action on cells and the process(es) by which these actions progress to fibrogenesis are still not well understood. 1-3 It is generally believed, however, that the action of quartz particles on the cell membrane is the starting point of the silicotic process. 1,4 Since the first step must involve surface reactions, characterization of the chemical structure of the surface of quartz particles has been the subject of several recent studies!-' For example, we reported that mechanical crushing of quartz under normal atmosphere generates silicon-based (Si• and SiO•) radicals which decay with time, and that these radicals are associated with a higher cytotoxicity of fresh quartz dust as compared to that of an aged dust from the same stock. 6,8 Independently Fubini and coworkers' have also reported on the formation of Si• and SiO• -type of radicals from quartz particles crushed under atmospheric conditions. Gulumian and van Wyk9 have reported that quartz particles react with hydrogen peroxide (H202) to generate hydroxyl (•OH) radicals. These authors9 suggested that this process might contribute to quartz's pathogenicity but the mechanism of the -OH radical formation was not clarified. Earlier, Gabor and Anca10 had suggested that the cytotoxicity of quartz particles might be associated with the generation of some factor or factors possessing the properties of a free radical and hence capable of promoting the peroxidative chain cleavage of polyunsaturated fatty acid moieties of the phospholipids in the cell membrane. More recently, Weitzman and Graceffa 11 reported that asbestos is able to catalyze the generation of -OH radicals from H2O2. Their later work12 indicated that lipid peroxidation might be one of the mechanisms of tissue injury by asbestos."

"INTRODUCTIONThis paper summarizes our recent investigations of the potential role of silicon-oxygen based free radical species in the biochemical mechanism of the lung injury caused by the inhalation of freshly fractured silica. The impetus for this study came from the following observations. Inhalation of crystalline silica is associated with the development of acute and chronic silicosis. Chronic silicosis is characterized by the development of sharply marked concentric fibrotic nodules in the lung. This occurs over a period of several decades with the development of progressive respiratory impairment. In contrast, acute silicosis is manifested by the filling of the alveoli with an amorphous lipoproteinaceous exudate within a short period after exposure, and rapid development of respiratory disability often leading to fatality. Most studies on the pathogenesis of silicosis have focused on the elucidation of cellular mechanisms of cell injury and the development of chronic silicosis. Because pulmonary responses to crystalline silica are distinctly different for · the acute and chronic silicosis, we hypothesized that the acute response is associated with some unique properties of ·freshly formed silica particle surfaces, due to the formation of some reactive chemical species caused by the rupturing or the silicon-oxygen bonds. In occupations involving drilling, tunneling and sandblasting operations acute silicosis can be correlated with this unique surface reactivity of silica. The formation or reactive species was demonstrated, using electron spin resonance (ESR) spectroscopy (Dalal et al., 1986; Fuibini et al., 1987; Hochstrasser and Antononi, 1972). Grinding of quartz crystals under ultra high vacuum (10-10 torr) leads to the formation of Si- and SiO• radicals and these radicals are quenched by exposure to air and other gases (Hochstrasser and Antonini, 1972). ESR signals have also been reported from micronized quartz samples that were evacuated at 413 K (Bolls et al., 1983). In order to find a more direct relationship of such radicals to acute silicosis, we made ESR measurements on quartz dusts freshly ground in ambient air and found- that indeed grinding under ambient environment leads to the formation of the Si• and SiO• type of radicals which decay on storing the dusts in air or in biological buffers (Dalai et al., 1986; Vallyathan et al., 1988). The Si• and SiO radical formation on grinding has also been reported by Fubini et al. (1987). In addition, we recently found that •OH radicals are generated in aqueous suspensions of freshly ground quartz (Dalai et al., 1988; Shi et al., 1988; Vallyathan et al., 1988). We have subsequently carried out detailed cytotoxicity and biological assays on freshly made as well as aged quartz dusts. As summarized below, the results provide new insight into the biochemical mechanism of acute silicosis."

Abstract-Underground mines are typically extensive labyrinths that employ many people working over an area of many square miles; exten¬sive analysis of mine-communications systems has identified specific problem areas, in particular the excessive times required to locate key personnel underground, the inadequacy of existing phone systems in terms of capacity and privacy, and the inability to communicate with men on the move with wireless communications, as is taken for granted on the surface. A review is presented of the existing systems, the prob¬lem definition, and the various approaches that have been or are being investigated to solve these problems. Data on health-related illnesses and disease in the mining industry are scarce, and information on rates and costs is not readily available. Substantial amounts of research are being directed to addressing these issues, including work at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s (NIOSH) mining health and safety laboratories in Spokane and Pitts-burgh. This paper briefly discusses the current status of some miner health-related issues, including those involving coal dust, silica dust, diesel particulate matter, asbestos, noise, lead, welding fumes, and skin disorders, as well as research and other activities aimed at protecting miners from occupational illnesses and disease.

This paper is one of a series giving the results of metallurgical tests conducted by: the Alaska station of the Federal Bureau of Iſines, on the recovery of gold from the black sands of placer clean-ups. The data given in this report were obtained from tests on a lot of black sand from a property located on St. Patrick Creek, Fairbanks mining district, Territory of Alaska. This property comprises the Sagan Fraction and adjoining bench claims, and is being operated by J. A. Lillie. The sand ad already been treated at the mine by amalgamation. A sample taken by Mr. Lillie and assayed at the station showed that the gold still remain ing amounted to ll cents per pound. As this gold content was sufficiently high to justify further treatment of the same, 770 pounds were shipped to the station for testing. The reader will note that the gold content is given in cents per pouni, rather than per ton. This is in conformity with practice in the district in valuing black sands, as the quantity obtained at any one time is small, much less than one ton. . The sand consisted principally of schist and quartz, with very little ilmenite and garnet; and no magnetite or sulphides. Most of the gold present as contaminated with quartz, as the free particles of gold had been removed by amalgamation at the mine.

"IntroductionIn part 1 of this paper, the results of the experimental work in a wind tunnel under controlled conditions were presented. To understand the spatial and temporal behaviour of airborne dust under mine conditions, experiments were performed in the Lake Lynn Experimental Mine of the US Bureau of Mines. The mine airway experiments were designed to study the variations of ambient concentrations along the length of an airway, and the deposition rates and deposition velocities in an airway cross section. Other objectives of the study were to investigate the spatial and temporal behaviour of airborne dust with regard to air velocity and particle density, the size distribution of the airborne dust cloud as it travels in the airway, and the size distribution of the dust particles deposited along the airway. Other objectives of the study were to compare wind tunnel results with In-Mine results, whenever appropriate.Experimental ProcedureLocationA complete description of the Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine of the US Bureau of Mines (USBM) can be found in the US Bureau of Mines Information Circular 8911 (Mattes et al., 1983). This mine provides excellent facilities for dust experiments. The airway dimensions are similar to those of a coal mine airway. The mine has a drift (D Drift, see Figure 1) that extends almost 500 meters without interconnecting airways, stoppings, or bends. The D drift measures approximately 6m in width and 2,25m in height.The Lake Lynn Laboratory Mine· is ventilated by a variable speed, 75 kW (100 hp), 28,3 m3/s (60 000 cfm) blower fan installed on the top of the ventilation shaft. Air velocities of 1, 1,3 and 1,8 m/s, respectively, could be obtained in the D Drift. However, the temperature changes at the surface can cause small variations in air quantities and velocities underground. The low background dust level in the mine reduces the problem of sample contamination from other sources of dust. Extended periods of uninterrupted data collection can also be scheduled. Mine airway parameters which are important for the analysis include the dimensions of the airway and the ventilation data such as the air velocity, and the pressure loss in the drift. All these data were acquired during altimeter surveys which were conducted prior to each of the experiments."

The Bureau of Mines conducted laboratory studies on methods to increase the recovery of brine from slime produced by operating potash plants. The slime was comprised of 80 percent brine saturated with KCl and NaCl, and 20 percent solids. A variety of settling techniques, filtration methods, continuous centrifugation, and novel processing techniques were investigated. Vacuum filtration recovered 6S percent of the brine at 47 gallons of brine per square foot per day. Pressure filtration, on the other hand, recovered 74 percent of the brine at 40.9 gallons of brine per square foot per day. Centrifugation in a 6-inch-diameter continuous decanter-type separator resulted in 42 percent recovery of the brine at a treatment rate of 542 gallons of brine per day. Vertical drains proved to be the most promising novel debrining technique investigated. With this method, 45 percent of the brine was recovered in 3 days.

"Since its establishment in 1910 the Bureau of Mines has consistently recommended the rock-dusting of bituminous and lignitic coal mines as a preventive of widespread explosions. As with many other proposed innovations, the response to the bureau's recommendation has been slow; but during the past 10 years many coal mines have done some rock-dusting, even though probably fewer than 50 of the country's approximately 6,000 coal mines are thoroughly rock-dusted. Notwithstanding the inadequacy of the rock-dusting which has been done in most of the mines which have adopted the new system, numerous cases are at hand. indicating the well-founded basis of the bureau's claims regarding the effectiveness of rock-dust in stopping explosions. Very brief descriptions will be given of several cases in which explosions in coal mines of the United States are fairly definitely known to have been stopped by rock-dust during the past 5 or 6 years; in addition, several cases are cited in which explosions were stopped through the agency of rock-dust and moisture.A rock-dusted mine is one in which the floor, roof, and sides of every accessible working place, including haulage ways, airways, manways, and rooms and connections have an application of rock-dust - for instance, limestone - such that the incombustible content of the aggregate dust on those surfaces is over 60 per cent. The dust in these workings should be sampled at regular intervals to determine whether the incombustible matter in the coal-dust is less than the necessary minimum of 60 per cent; another application of rock-dust should be given when the incombustible percentage is less than 60. (As an example of thorough rock-dusting, see Bureau of Mines Information Circular 6578, 1932, which describes how rock-dusting is done in Alabama at a cost of 1.8 cents per ton of coal for a thorough application; Report of Investigations 3060, February, 1931, Rock-Dusting In A Pennsylvania Coal Mine; or Information Circular 6244, 1930, giving data, including costs, on rock-dusting in coal mines in New Mexico.)An explosion may be started by the ignition of gas, even when rock-dust is present; hence it is not correct to say that rock-dust will prevent an explosion of gas; however, if rock-dust has been applied to a working place which has present an explosive mixture of me-thane and air, and if an open light is used or a blown-out shot or an electric arc occurs, although there will very likely be an ignition and possibly an explosion, the rock-dust will certainly prevent ignition of the coal-dust nearby, and unless the general atmosphere has an explosive gas mixture, the rock-dust will stop propagation of the flame throughout the mine. In other words, if an explosion is started by gas or by coal-dust and the mine has been rock-dusted as defined, the rock-dust will prevent widespread extension of the explosion, unless the general atmosphere contains methane and air in explosive proportions.With these definitions clearly in mind, instances are now given where rock-dust has played a prominent part in the stopping of several explosions. No cases have been included where there was any reasonable doubt that rock-dust had taken a definite part in the limiting of the explosions."

Major problems facing the development of coal and gas resources of the Hartshorne Coalbeds include the complex distribution of minable and unminable coal, high methane content and bed pressure, faulting, variations in degree of dip, presence of natural gas fields in associated sandstones, and legal problems, caused by local geologic characteris- tics, in identifying gas origin. This Bureau of Mines study provides pertinent geologic information for long-range planning of subsurface coal and gas production from the Hartshorne Coalbeds. Pittsburg, Coal, Hughes, and Atoka Counties, OK, have approximately 1 billion metric tons (1.1 billion short tons) of Hartshorne coal in place. The methane resource of Hartshorne Coalbeds is estimated at 9.2 billion m3 (325 billion ft3) and varies with overburden and rank, These estimates were compiled from gas well density logs, coal-core data, out- crop measurements, abandoned mine maps, and the literature. The Hartshorne Coalbeds represent a valuable coal and gas resource which at present is contributing nothing to coal and gas production. This report discusses potential problems and serves as a reference for future exploration and development work. Recognition of these potential geologically related problems prior to development of this basin will reduce hazards and allow for an economic recovery of these resources.
