"The accompanying tabulation gives the results of a series of operating tests on two types of small stokers. One was an inclined, natural-draft, moving-grate, overfeed ""hand-stoker"" fired and manipulated by hand; the other was. a horizontal, forced-draft, stationary-grate, underfeed, mechanical unit-stoker operated by an electric motor. These were installed as shown by the accompanying sketches (figs. 1 and 2) under horizontal return tubular boilers of a nominal rating of 150 bl.h.p. each.The steam load carried by these boilers was a rather typical heating load. It was fairly constant and of about 30 bl.h.p. throughout the summer months, with small variation between day and night. During the winter months the daily variations were dependent upon the outside temperature. The boilers were banked a considerable part of the night.As noted in the table, two kinds of coal were used. The size of one kind was run-of-mine and the other 11/4 inch nut and clack. Purpose: Marras et al. developed a technique to evaluate sincerity of effort during dynamic trunk motion performance. The validity and reliability of the technique have not been evaluated. Therefore, the objective of this study was to first determine whether or not a sincerity of effort measure correctly identified those giving a sincere effort in a blinded randomized control trial and second to quantify inter-rater and test-retest reliability. Methods: This article reports the findings of a two phase study. In phase one, the blinded evaluation, participants were randomly assigned to either a sincere or insincere performance condition. An examiner tested participants without knowledge of the participant's group membership. In the second phase, two examiners evaluated each participant twice to quantify inter-rater and test-retest reliability. Results: In the blinded phase the specificity was 100% and sensitivity was 90% for identifying sincere and insincere effort, respectively. Phase two results showed no significant difference in probability of sincere effort between raters or between testing sessions. Conclusion: A performance criterion that accurately identifies sincere vs insincere group membership during functional evaluations was identified. There were no significant differences between raters or between testing sessions. These findings indicate that this test is reliable and possesses good predictive validity in assessing sincerity of effort.

The system also provides normal communication between miners within a working section through the uhf coupler interface repeater.

Contract H0242013 was originally to evaluate through underground tests, water spray systems for controlling respirable dust at the face of a longwall plow. A number of difficulties were encountered which made such an evaluation impractical. The contract was modified to evaluate, in the BCR dust tunnel facility, the live factors believed to affect respirable dust levels. A 60-foot long; plow face mock-up was constructed in the dust tunnel, a facility with controlled airflow and dust concentration. Six types of nozzles were tested with the following parameters: two nozzle orientations, two levels of water pressure, two levels of airflow, and with and without simulated airflow through the gob. Of these factors, the most significant in reducing respirable dust levels was nozzle orientation, where the nozzle directed 45 degrees downstream resulted in 27 percent lower dust levels than those directed 45 degrees upstream (against the airflow). Following in order of effectiveness were the higher water pressure and the lower airflow. All nozzles tested resulted in similar dust reduction, i.e., the type of nozzle was the least significant factor.

This interpretation of the laws of Mexico has been pro oared from the best information available in Washington but is released subject to correction and amplification, if necessary, by the proper American diplomatic and consular officers, to whom it has been referred through the courtesy of the Department of State. INTRODUCTION Present-day Mexican mining legislation involves, not only the latest minim enactment (August 1, 1026), but many other enactments and regulations, principal among which are the Constitution, the Civil Code, the Code of Commerce, the Foreign Law, the Mining Tax Law, and. the Civil Jurisprudence of Mexico--the last-mentioned being based in Dart on Supreme Court decisions. Ere Mexican Federal Government is supreme in mining legislation because, among other reasons, a large part of the revenue of the Government must come from the fiscal control of the mines. All circulars, decrees, and rulings that affect the mines not only have their origin in the Central Government but are administered thereby. The Department of Industry, Commerce, and Labor is in control of all mines. Attention may here be called, however,

This paper deals with the second phase of an extensive research on coal-mine ventilation factors. A comprehensive report of the entire work is in course of preparation, but abstracts of the various chapters are being prepared in order to make the results public as rapidly as possible. Part 1 dealt with the resistance of unobstructed entries and was issued as Serial 2621 of the Bureau of Mines, in July 1924. Description of tests. After the resistance of an unobstructed entry to flow of air had been determined by tests in the Experiment mine, mine cars were; run into the test section in various arrangements and the increase in resistance was determined. The cars used were of the wooden type with loose end gate, and would hold about one ton of coal, level full. They were 7 feet long. 4 feet 2 inches wide above the wheels, 3 feet high, and had a cross-sectional area of approximately 10 square feet. The average area of the entry was about 57 square feet, the ratio of unobstructed to total area being about 17.6 per cent. The track gage was 42 inches and the wheel-base 20 inches.

An active list of permissible explosives was published in December 1936 as part of Bureau of Mines Report of Investigations 3324, under the title "Active List of Permissible Explosives and Blasting Devices Approved Prior to July 31, 1,936." This list included 170 brand names. Changes in the list that have been authorized to June 30, 1937 placed 35 additional brands of permissible explosives on the active permissible list as a result of tests, changes in brand names, or transfer from the inactive list. Ten permissible explosives were transferred from the active to the inactive list. The present list contains 196 brand names, one explosive having been placed on the list subsequent to June 30, 1937. [The supply of gravel spar and of acid spar is not well balanced. Gravel spar -- 85 per cent flourspar, 5 per cent silica -- gluts the market, whereas acid spar -- 98 per cent fluorspar, 1 per cent silica -- is somewhat scarce. Hence it is desirable to convert some of the gravel spar into acid spar. Knowledge of this condition prompted the Franklin. Fluorsrar Co. at Paducah. Ky., to enter into cooperation with the U. S. Bureau of Mines and the Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy to improve the methods of fluorspar, milling so that morn acid spar would be available. The fluorspar company detailed Mr. Omar Greeman for the work. During the course of the investigation, while Mr. Greeman was also doing work for a master's degree in the School of Mines? an extensive study was made of gravity concentration of fluorspar ores. Decrepitation by heat treatment was also given a laboratory try-out. A part of tie time was spent on flotation; these notes relate only to the flotation. The results of one of the flotation runs is appended. The test was made in a 500-gram mechanical-agitation machine. The sample was ground to 100-mesh in a pebble mill.]

Develop a cost-effective diesel aerosol sampler that can be used by industry and regulatory agencies to determine the diesel exhaust aerosol concentration in mine atmospheres. The sampler must be easy to use, wearable by mine personnel, compatible with current personal sampling protocols, and inexpensive. Approach The University of Minnesota (University) and the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) have developed and tested a prototype diesel exhaust aerosol sampler. The sampler, however, was complicated and expensive to fabricate. Consequently, the USBM redesigned the sampler to simplify both manufacturing and use, and the sampler was evaluated to ensure equivalency with the prototype. Background The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has recommended that "whole diesel exhaust be regarded as a 'potential occupational carcinogen,' as defined in the Cancer Policy of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration." In addition, the U.S. Mina Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has been directed by an advisory committee to establish a diesel exhaust aerosol standard and regulations to minimize exposure to diesel pollutants in underground coal mines.

The Bureau of Mines evaluated the hydraulic stimulation of a gob-degasification borehole to determine if this procedure would aid in degasifying a longwall panel. The stimulated borehole did not degasify the longwall panel as expected either before or after mining of the panel started. It reduced the underground methane emission only 11 pct, considerably less than the reductions effected by two unstimulated boreholes in the same panel. Some probable reasons for the reduced methane flow from the hydraulically stimulated borehole are very low reservoir gas pressure, location of hydraulically stimulated zones within the grouted casing, a casing break caused by lateral shifting, possible vertical movement of rock strata during caving, grouting of a 4-inch pipe blocking three stimulated zones, plasticity of shales, and possible hole damage by swelling of water-sensitive minerals. The borehole was also located between two second-mined areas, which may have allowed partial degasification of the overburden and the coalbed in advance of mining. Finally, a period of 3 months is probably not long enough for the borehole to degasify the overburden before mining.

? A roof bolter reaches for a lever while guiding the drill with his other hand. Since he's watching the drill and many of the controls look and feel alike, he hits the wrong control and crushes his hand. ? Six hours into the night shift, an ore truck driver dozes off. The truck plows over the berm and down into the pit. ? Fleeing a afire, a face crew sees smoke in the intake entry. Assuming the fire is ahead, they cross over to another entry, but soon encounter even worse smoke. These very different accidents have at least one factor in common: the human factor. The actions, decisions, thoughts, or perceptions of one or more humans contributed to the accident. These are just a few examples of safety problems researched by the Human Factors Group of the Pittsburgh Research Center, U.S. Department of Energy.

The purpose of this work was to develop and field test improved knee protection for underground coal miners working in low seam mines. In a previous phase of this contract (Sanders, 1982), experimental knee pads were developed and field tested. The field test revealed several design deficiencies with the knee pads, and suggestions for improving the design were made. The work summarized in this report, therefore, consists of modifying the design and method of fabrication of the knee pads originally describes by Sanders (1982), and of field testing the improved design. The new prototype was shorter and wider than the original design, and used a neoprene pass-through strap design rather than a cloth strap molded into the pad itself. The new prototype was constructed by slush molding a hollow bladder that was then filled with foam. Initial reactions to the pads in the field test were very positive. However, after two months, the opinions about the new prototype became less positive. They were judged, generally, to be no better or worse than the pads usually worn by the field-test participants. Problems were encountered in the field with respect to durability. Water seeped into the inner cavity of many of the pads and caused the foam to deteriorate. It was concluded that it would not be cost-effective or feasible to significantly improve upon current commercially available knee pad designs.

One of the most difficult and longstanding engineering problems associated with coal mining is the catastrophic failure phenomenon known as coal mine bursts (known in the United States as bumps). For more than 70 years, researchers and practitioners have attempted to determine whether this destruction observed underground is caused by stress conditions within the coal pillar or from distant seismic sources in the mine roof and floor strata. The role of confinement and the extent of failure in solid pillars and panels have also proven difficult to define. These are important issues, since control solutions need to be based on a fundamental understanding of the problem. Obsenations by U.S. Bureau of Mines researchers over the last decade have helped to clarify certain aspects of these issues. Microseismic sensors and geomechanic field measurements have located areas of excess energy release, identified stress conditions in coalbeds close to failure, and recorded the response of mine structures prone to bursts. In the present study, data available for a range of U.S. bursts were considered in an effort to evaluate both common and distinctive features. Although the attempt revealed little commonality, encouraging results were produced by categorizing coal bursts by source mechanisms. When a coal burst is thus categorized, differences in environmental factors-such as geology, stress fields, and mining methods-are highlighted, and viable control strategies are readily recognized.

Tailings dumps at Mercur, Utah, contain about $7 million worth of gold in 3.5 million tons of mill tailings assaying about 0.07 ounce of gold per ton. Commercial mining and milling at Mercur ceased in 1942. To determine whether improved technology was now available that might permit economic reprocessing of the Mercur dumps, the Bureau of Mines probed for a low-cost method that would be applicable to these tailings. A composite sample prepared for laboratory studies assayed 0.062 ounce gold per ton. About 10 percent of the gold occurred as a water-soluble cyanide. Conventional cyanide leaching dissolved 32 percent of the gold, and hot, strong cyanide solution dissolved 42 percent. Results were not improved by pretreatment with acids, bases, or oxidants. After expensive preroasting, gold recovery by cyanidation was increased to 65 percent. The simple procedures were ineffective, and more effective procedures were too costly for economical processing of Mercur tailings.

"During the past year, the Pittsburgh experiment station of the Bureau of Mines has been investigating methods for the quantitative estimation of carbon monoxide in blood. This work was necessary because reliable methods of analysis are of the greatest importance in the bureau's research work on prevention and treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning among workers in mines and metallurgical plants. Two of the methods considered involve color comparisons. In one of these methods, differences in tint can be noted fairly readily, while in the other, they are much more difficult to detect. The latter, however, is otherwise considerably simpler. It was decided, therefore, in studying the possibilities of this second method, to use the most sensitive eyes in the laboratory force.Preliminary trials.The method under investigation was the Haldane carmine determination of carbon monoxide in blood. The plain oxyhamoglobin of the blood in dilute solution is a pale straw color, when exposed to carbon monoxide it becomes a cherry pink. In the analysis dilute indigo carmine is added to oxyhsmoglobin until the solution matches in tint the carbon monoxide hemoglobin. The eye wanted, then, was the one most sensitive to faint pinks. But just how to select the analyst was not clear At first the Williams test scale, used in the Navy, was considered, but on con¬sultation with Dr. L. L. Thurston, bead of the Department of Psychology at Carnegie Institute of Technology, the following procedure was adopted.Instead of standard tests made up of all colors, only those occurring in the analysis were used. Solutions were prepared of the two hemoglobins, from which twenty-four different pairs were made up and placed in test tubes like those expected to be used in the analysis. One of each pair differed from the other in percentage of carbon monoxide hemoglobin by amounts varying from 2-1/2 per cent to 20 per cent. Each pair was compared in a box built in our own shop. This was 20 inches long and 5 inches square in cross section. One end was covered with ground glass. Just inside this glass cover were provided two slots, each the width of the test tubes used. The tubes to be compared were dropped into these slots through two holes in the top of the box. The device was placed before a window away from the sun, and so arranged that the light conditions were the same on each slit or opening. The person to be tested was seated before the box, and as the two tubes were placed before him side by side, he marked whether A (left) or B (right) contained the more cherry pink. This procedure was continued till he had compared all the pairs."

"IntroductionThe accumulation of gummy and resinous deposits in consumers' gas meters began to assume serious proportions about 1917. As the trouble developed and spread in the years following, it manifested itself in several ways, which ultimately began to the expressible in distinctly economic terms, more specifically in terms of costs; in 1922 an organized and fundamentally based investigation of this trouble was begun. In an earlier paper*** a short statement of the occurrence and costs of the deposition was given and at the same time an analysis of the problem, as well as well as a general plan of attack, was presented. That plan included two general phases, first, a chemical study of typical was 1 quarry or 2 cosinous content , mauformly consituents, rmln and selected subjects; and secondly, a comparative survey of plants affected and sufficient therewith, attention being paid to construction, operation, meter conditions and related data. Two methods are presented to determine the mechanical shaft torque as a function of time for an induction motor. The methods are based on the motor equivalent circuit and use as input variables of the motor terminal voltage, line current, input power, and power factor. One method uses all four variables and the other uses only voltage and current. The test data deals specifically with continuous miners, but the theory could be applied to other mining machines driven by multiple induction motors. Results are given for the tramming, maneuvering, cutting, and cutting with loading operations and are in the form of a minimum, a maximum, and an average of the shaft-torque time function. The theoretical development and computer implementation are discussed for both methods.

"INTRODUCTION Considerable interest was shown .prior to and during World War II in the winning of metallurgical-grade alumina from anorthosite, kaolin, siliceous bauxites, diasporic clays, and other aluminum-bearing ores. Laboratory and pilot-plant investigations were made on many of these ores by the Bureau of Mines, and a series of reports on them is being prepared. This report covers the tests made on the application of the lime-soda-sinter process to anorthosite, which is a mixture of albite, NaAlS1308, and anorthite, CaAl2Si208. Extensive deposits of anorthosite occur in the Laramie Range in Wyoming and extend into Colorado; other deposits are found in New York, with outcroppings appearing in Vermont, Maine, and Labrador.Anorthosito can not be treated by the Bayer process for the production of metallurgical-grade alumina, because excessive losses of soda and alumina occur from the formation of sodium-aluminum silicate due to the large amount (50 percent) of silica in the ore.RESULTS OF INVESTIGATIONSSmall-scale laboratory tests supplemented by pilot-plant runs have demonstrated that the alunina and soda occurring in the Wyoming anorthosite from the Laramie Range can be extracted and recovered satisfactorily by the lime-soda process. It has been shown that liquors containing approximately 95 gram of A1203 per liter can be consistently produced at Na20:A1203 ratios from 1.75 to 2.27, and that these liquors can readily be desilicated and carbonated to yield high-grade alumina trihydrate of quality comparable to that essential for cell-grade alumina. The optimum results were obtained with Na20:A1203 mol ratio of 1.03 and Ca0:Si02 ratio of 2.14 in the sinter when calcined at an average temperature of 2,444ºF. for 25 minutes."

A very simple cold-bend test was devised and tested for evaluating thermoplastic jackets used on mine-power-feeder cables. A test sample is bent into a semi-circle whose radius is equal to the minimum bend radius recommended by IPCEA and then cooled to the, desired test temperature (-35°C). While at temperature, the sample is straightened by pulling the cable ends with a winch arrangement. The results show that of the jackets tested, those which cannot withstand the test literally burst when the sample is straightened.
