Common practice for the preparation of permanent mold for aluminum casting is to coat the mold with a ceramic suspension to obtain a chemically stable interface with the aluminum melt. This practice serves two purposes: first, it helps the thermal regulation of the mold and second, it prolongs its life. The possibility of increasing the coating durability by applying it by thermal spray is appealing. Plasma spray of zirconium oxide based coatings was performed on H13 tool steel to study the coating’s thermal fatigue resistance. A unique dip test setup was used to characterize the thermal fatigue resistance of the coatings and of bare H13 steel. Observations of the failure mechanism bring an insight on the requirements of the coating to maximize its durability.

This paper deals with drilling and blasting techniques at the Phoenix mine, near Grand F1nks, B.C., which is now operated by The Granby Mining Company Ltd. The difficulties of open-pit mining through former underground workings are unique to this operation. Rock types are related to drilling conditions, and the methods used, or contemplated, to overcome the several difficulties are outlined. The equipment used is also mentioned. Finally, blasting techniques and costs are reviewed. Introduction T HE Granby Mining Company operates on open-pit copper mine and concentrator at the site of the original Phoenix mine, near Grand Forks in south-central British Columbia. The pit is a side-hill cut measuring approximately 1,000 by 2,000 ft., and covering a vertical range of from 4,550 to 4,950 feet above sea level. The mill is currently operating at 1,900 tons per day. A 4.5 to 1.0 waste to ore ratio necessitates the removal of some 15,000 tons of ore and waste per working day. "In Malaysia, there were two rare earths processing plants namely Asian Rare Earth (ARE) and the Malaysian Rare Earth Corporation Plant (MAREC) in Perak, which were operated until 1992 and were subsequently closed due to problems pertaining to disposal of large amount of radioactive waste. Recently, Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) has become one of the largest rare earths processing plant in the world producing rare earth elements (REE) in Gebeng, Pahang. The primary raw material is lanthanide concentrate (LC) which is imported from Mount Weld mine in Australia and shipped to Malaysia. LC is produced from lanthanide ore after mining and mineral processing. The ore has a lower impact than Bayan Obo, Mountain Pass and adsorbed clay deposits, given the small footprint of the mine itself and the remoteness of the location. The type of ore being mined (rare earth phosphates: carbonatite, monazite) may have higher thorium content than bastnasite ore from the Chinese or American mines but still far below radiation concerns. This paper was written to review the processing flowsheet at the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP), the environmental impact associated with the processing of the said ores and the sustainability of the operation.INTRODUCTIONRare earth minerals are one of a set of 17 minerals or chemical elements which consists of yttrium and scandium, as well as the 15 lanthanide elements (lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium, neodymium, promethium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, and lutetium). Despite their importance, rare earth minerals rarely exist in economically viable concentrations and they are usually difficult to extract. Rare-earth minerals create strong magnets when added to magnetic elements such as iron, and are useful for the production of electronics systems as well as electric cars. They are also used extensively in automotive catalytic converters, fluid cracking catalysts in petroleum refining, wind turbines, phosphors in colour televisions and flat panel screens, displays for mobile phones and laptops, rechargeable batteries, and various medical devices. The elements are typically split into two subgroups: the cerium sub-group of ‘‘Light’’ rare earth elements (LREEs) which includes La to Eu and the yttrium sub-group of ‘‘Heavy’’ rare earth elements (HREEs) which include the remaining lanthanide elements, Gd to Lu, including yttrium (Gupta and Krishnamurthy, 1992; Jordens et al., 2013; Trifonov, 1963). Scandium, however, when it is classified as a rare earth element, is not included in either the LREE or HREE classifications (Gupta and Krishnamurthy, 1992; Jordens et al, 2013). Half of the world’s 110 million tons of reserves exist in China while other sizable deposits are found in Russia, United States, Brazil, India, Australia, Canada, and Greenland. The countries known to be actively mining REE are China, Russia, India, Brazil and Malaysia (Hao et al., 2015). Among these countries, China has the largest REE production, accounting for more than 93% of global supply (Yap, 2015). The critical metal report (Moss et al. 2011) listed 14 economically vital raw materials that are prone to supply disruption and concluded that supply disruption would threaten the goal for cleaner transport and sustainable energy since rare earth metals are used in products using green technology, such as hybrid/electric vehicles, carbon capture systems, wind power generation, low-energy lighting, and energy efficient flat-screen displays."

"Countercurrent decantation circuits(CCD) are often employed in hydrometallurgy to effect solids-liquid separation in combination with a barren solution wash to reduce losses of valuable solution component(s) from the tails. Bechtel Corporation uses its BEMSIM flowsheet-modelling PC computer program to simulate a CCD circuit where the ""dirty"" wash solution contains significant amounts of soluble components. An algorithm successfully models this condition and is simplified to a single expression when the wash solution is a ""clean"" solution containing no solubles. The CCD calculation module is compared to operating data from uranium and nickel-cobalt CCD circuits.IntroductionHydrometallurgical process schemes have often relied on countercurrent washing methods to reduce soluble losses of valuable product in the tails. Commonly used equipment to effect this operation is a CCD circuit of N thickeners in series, where a slurry is fed to thickener I and a wash solution to thickener N; clear pregnant solution overflows thickener I and washed tails exit as underflow from thickener N. CCD circuits of this type are typically employed when the solids tend to slime heavily and where a filter is not economic.A typical CCD circuit usually employs from two to five thickeners and can employ either a ""clean"" washing solution of, say, pure water or else the hydrometallurgical circuit may generate a ""dirty"" barren solution containing an appreciable amount of soluble component which may be advantageously returned to the process as CCD wash solution. Various authors have treated the case for clean washing solutions (Svarkovsky 1977, Merritt 1970). For the case of dirty wash solutions, an algorithm has been developed to enable efficient modelling by the BEMSIM computer program, because the need for an accurate method to calculate soluble losses is required when performing an economic trade-off analysis of the value of product lost in the tails as a function of the number of thickeners."

Creation of 3D model of coal seams is a tedious and time consuming operation. Computer aided 3D solid modelling of coal seams can be performed in a fast and detailed manner. However, in case of having tectonically disturbed coal seams where faults may be observed, expert opinion is necessary to decide the geometry of the coal seam. The aim of this study is detection of fault zones with computers by using drill hole data. Firstly, a digital database is generated by using the drill hole data. Surface models of the layers are produced by applying triangulation method on coal seam roof elevations. The generated surface is divided into small squares and consequently dip and dip direction values are calculated for each square. Variograms for dip and dip direction are determined and maps showing the variation of dip and dip direction are generated by using geostatistical methods such as kriging and co-kriging. Examination of disconformities observed on estimation maps created by kriging and co-kriging clearly reveals the extension of faults. The method used in this study is applied to detect fault lines of a known mine field. 3D solid modelling of the coal seam has also been performed by using conventional cross-section method. The results of both methods were in good agreement. Identification of major faults by using the method introduced in this study could certainly simplify 3D solid modelling of coal seams.

"Data for underground mine-hoist ropes determined in the Ontario Special Rope Tests were obtained, encoded and analyzed statistically. Prior 10 refined statistical analyses, these data were subjected la characterization studies and preliminary analyses to allow trends to emerge that could be used to guide and facilitate the refined analysis. The data were characterized by determining distribution s for a wide range of variables including remaining strength, service life in terms of lime and hoisting cycles, outer-wire torsion values, elongation during tensile testing, diameter reduction, location of strength loss and the strength lasses associated with corrosion rating and lubrication rating , This paper describes the more important relationships between remaining strength (or, conversely, strength loss) as the dependent variable and some of the principal independent variables mentioned above.IntroductionBoth productivity and safety in underground mines could be improved if mine-heist rope Iife and reliability could be predicted more accurately . As a result, hoist-rope failure processes and their effects on rope life and remaining strength need to be quantified and related in such a way that improved retirement criteria can be developed. This is true whether the failure is incipient or actual or whether the failure mode is by corrosion , wear, fatigue or a combination of these factors."

At the same time, it is important that such competitive price must result in a fair price for the crude oil at the we1lhead. The factors of nearness to market, cheap pipe line transportation, and reasonable United States tariffs, all tend to make ?possible a competitive market and a fair wellhead price.

"The Pogo mine start-up milling targets of 2005 are vastly different than the targets of today. Improvements have been driven by unintentional design oversight, continual circuit optimization or optimization due to changing mineralogy. The more significant process improvements to date have occurred in the gravity, flotation and leach/CIP unit operations. Details of the significant improvements are presented along with the impacts to the process.INTRODUCTION Deposit Overview Pogo mine is located along the Goodpaster River, southeast of Fairbanks, Alaska. This deposit sits in the center of the Tintina Gold Province (Figure 1), a region of similar Intrusion Related Gold deposits in Interior Alaska, the Yukon and British Columbia Canada (McCoy et al., 1997). The Pogo deposit is hosted in a rock sequence of amphibolite-grade gneisses intruded by mid-Cretaceous granitic plutons and dikes, which in turn, were cut by and host the auriferous quartz veins of the Pogo deposit.The Pogo deposit is comprised of three distinct zones of auriferous quartz veins spatially adjacent to each other. These are the Liese Zone, North Zone, and the East Deep Zone. The Liese Zone consists of three stacked, massive quartz veins, designated the L1, L2, and L3. Vein thickness averages 3.0 m, with variations from 0.3–18 m thick. The North Zone mineralization is comprised of four veins with more consistent thickness, between 1 and 1.5 m. The East Deep deposit lies northeast of the Liese Zone ore body. It is separated by a post mineralization, quartz diorite pluton. The East Deep Zone is comprised of two stacked massive quartz veins with similar orientation as the Liese Zone."

"In dump leaching, the efficiency of metal extraction from ores is strongly influenced by the mechanisms of fluid flow. Particle size distribution acts as a fundamental parameter in the determination of fluid flow properties in packed ore beds. In this study, we investigated the particle size distribution in dump leaching by using image analysis technique. The results showed that the particles in the dump varied from smaller than 2 cm to larger than 200 cm in diameter. P80 was calculated to be 200 cm, which was significantly higher than the historical data used by the operation. P25, P50 and P80 were found to increase non-linearly with increasing depth towards the toe of the dump, suggesting the segregation of fine and coarse particles. The image analysis results were verified by applying the rock fragmentation models. The model with the Swebrec function was found to be in better agreement with the image analysis results. Future research will investigate the effect of particle size distribution on the behaviour of fluid flow.INTRODUCTION Fluid flow plays an essential role in the extraction of valuable metals using heap/dump leaching (Amos et al., 2009). The rates of the chemical leaching reactions and microbial activities determine metal concentrations in the leachates and therefore the efficiency of the metal extraction. The reaction rates are influenced by two fundamental processes: transport phenomenon and reaction kinetics (Bouffard & Dixon, 2001). The transport phenomenon refers to the percolation of fluids through channels and pores in a packed ore bed, which carries lixiviants and reaction products to/from ore surfaces by convection and diffusion. The percolation rate of the leaching solution is determined by the hydraulic conductivity of the packed ore bed, which is a function of the permeability and the degree of saturation (Guzman et al., 2008). Permeability, an intrinsic property of a packed ore bed, is strongly influenced by the particle size distribution of the ore grains (Bouffard & Dixon, 2001). Hence, the objective of this study was to investigate the particle size distribution in dump leaching."

The sub-level blasthole benching method of mining has been proved to be economical at Willroy Mines. How-ever due to the nature and attitude of the wall rock, this method is susceptible to serious hanging-wall dilution of the ore. Attempts to solve the dilution problem by various means were not satisfactory until long Stressteel bars were employed as rock bolts. The adoption of this de-vice does not require any special skill, and has become routine in the under-ground operation. Since the inception of this method, the dilution of the ore has been greatly reduced and the ov1!r-all costs of controlling this dilution are much lower. INTRODUCTION T HIS is a report describing the successful use of long Stressteel bars as rock bolts in preventing l1anging-wall failure and consequent dilution in open stopes. "Four deep-seated rockslide systems were investigated and are under surveillance by TIWAG (Tyrolean hydro-electric Company) since the mid-1960s after impoundment of Gepatsch reservoir began. These rockslide systems consist of several individual sliding masses (slabs) which show variable activity from zero to a few centimetres per year. The focus in this paper will be on the findings for the transient deformation behaviour of the Hochmais slab which is part of the “Hochmais-Atemkopf” rockslide system.The rock mass has slid over moraine deposits in the last post-glacial period and was in equilibrium (or slow to extremely slow moving, respectively) until the filling of the reservoir began. During the initial reservoir filling in summer 1964 considerable movements had been observed over a length of 1000 m accompanied with an activation of the Hochmais slab. Geological investigations, additional surface and subsurface measurement showed that the sliding mass is characterized by an en bloc movement and the deformation accumulates within a several metre thick shear zone located within the moraine. In contrast to the deformation characteristics for the first impoundment process (1964 – 1966) where the magnitude of deformation occurred during impoundment, the maximum amount of deformation since 1967 occurs during the drawdown of the reservoir. Based on long term measurement it can be shown that the magnitude of deformations per year correlates with the minimum storage level in the reservoir. Other external influences such as precipitation and snowmelt have no observable impact on the deformation characteristic of the landslide. On the basis of long-term data series it was possible to determine the factors of influence and to elaborate a conceptual mechanical model which describes the transient deformation behaviour of the Hochmais slab induced by the drawdown of the reservoir. The mechanical model considers the reduction of uplift forces in the highly fractured and permeable rock slab during drawdown as well as increasing seepage forces in the less permeable moraine material."

"The Michipicoten-Goudreau area, bordering on the northeast corner of lake Suferior, has had a tectonic history related to that of the geosyncline occupied by this lake. This basin has been a major structural feature in the Canadian Shield since at least late-Precambrian time. It has been extensively faulted and was the centre of great igneous activity in the Keweenawan feriod . Many of the faults, folds, dykes, and sills in the surrounding regions tend to head directly or indirectly into this basin. Some of the faults in the Michipicoten-Goudreau area appear to run under the eastern part of lake Superior just as the large Keweenaw fault in Michigan extends into the lake on the south side. Some of these faults may even be extensions of or counterparts of the faults on the south side of the lake. Another set of faults in the Michipicoten-Goudreau area runs nearly transverse to some of these major faults, and it is evident that in some places movement has recurred at a later time on faults formed in an early period.STRATIGRAPHYThe rocks of this area, with the exception of Pleistocene and Recent formations, are all Precambrian:"

"The mid-Cretaceous Seagull batholith intruded Mississippian sedimentary and volcanic rocks and Jurassic(?) granitic and ultramafic rocks within the Omineca Crystalline Belt in the Yuk on Territory near the British Columbia boundary. Leucoerotic fluorine- and boron-rich granites of the batholith exhibit many textural variations from aplite to pegmatite, but are dominated by a coarse-grained seriate unit and a fine-grained porphyritic unit.Four distinctive tin vein occurrences within and near the batholith are described, the most interesting of which is the MC showing of quartz-calcite-chlorite-cassiterite veins in intensely fractured zones of sedimentary and volcanic rocks. Three other showings occur within the batholith:J) the EC showing of quartz-fluorite-cassiterite-sulphide veins with prominent muscovite-illite alteration;2) the DU showing of quartz-hematite-fluorite-sulphide- sulphide-cassiterite with considerable manganese staining and sericitic alteration; and3) the VAL showing of quartz-tourmaline-cassiterite-fluorite-arsenopyrite veins with little associated alteration.Most cassiterite occurrences are within easterly-trending, vertical structures and all occurrences are thought to represent parts of a single system. These mineralogical and physical variations are apparently related to the distance from the upper contact of the batholith.For the Seagull batholith, Rb-Sr isotopic data give a 100±1.4 Ma isochron age that is concordant with the K-Ar model age from biotite of 101±4 Ma. Initial Sr isotopic ratios for the batholith are high at 0.712, indicating an old, sialic crustal source for this pluton. This initial ratio is similar to values for granitic rocks associated with tungsten deposits in the Yukon Territory. The high initial ratio for Sr, the high Si02 content, the high s/I index, the presence of normative corundum. leucogranitic composition and associated lithophile-tungsten mineralization demonstrate that the Seagull batholith is probably an S-type granitic body. This factor is significant to regional exploration jar tin and tungsten in the Canadian Cordillera."

"Abstract - This paper deals with industrial complexes such as: (1) a mine producing metal-bearing ore and a furnace(s)/converter(s) where the ore is melted into metal, either directly, or after a mineralurgical concentration; and (2) quarries producing the raw materials required for the manufacturing of cement and the kilns to which they are fed.Each mine or quarry operation results from the exploitation of a mineral deposit. This deposit is never homogeneous. The raw materials which are extracted from the mine/quarry can never be safely fed to a "process" such as a cement kiln or a metal smelter, because the devices involved lack the flexibility required to absorb a very inhomogeneous feed. Furnaces and kilns are known to be very sensitive, sometimes dangerously so, with regard to deviations from a certain ideal feed composition.The purpose of this paper is to present the conditions required to optimize the operation of such a complex, so as to maximize the production, the quality of the product, as well as the profit generated. Two key operations are involved: sampling (to know accurately the materials being dealt with) and bed-blending (to achieve the desired degree of homogeneity). The theories of sampling and bedblending have been developed by the author and presented in various books (Gy, 1992, 1998)."

319-type cast Al-Si-Cu-Mg alloys are commercially important due to their popular use in automotive applications. Artificial aging heat treatments are commonly performed in these alloys to achieve precipitation hardening and, therefore, improve their mechanical properties. The present work was carried out to investigate the effect of conventional (at a constant temperature, as specified by the standard T6 heat treatment regime), and non-conventional multi-temperature and interrupted aging cycles on the hardness, tensile and impact properties of two 319-type alloys (with and without Sr+ Mg additions). The results show that certain multi-temperature aging cycles have a more favourable effect in improving some mechanical properties than conventional cycles.
