In this paper, it is briefly introduced that China's Ordovician limestone confined-water menaces coal mining and Ordovician water is prevented and cured to secure the safety of coal mining. The theory of "Down-Three-Zones" is presented on the basis of research and practice in recent ten years. The concept of "Down-Three-Zones" of floor water-eruption is described clearly. Finally, the principle and method of applying the theory of "Down-Three-Zones" are discussed. 1. An Introduction of Damage: China is rich in coal resources. The conditions of coal field geology are quite complicated. There is an area of two million square kilometre of Karst limestone in nine million six thousand square kilometres of territory. The resources of underground water are rather plentiful, but this menaces coal exploration. Sixty percent of coal mines in China are damaged by limestone confined-water in different scales, particularly coal mines located the Carboniferous-Permian coal fields of the Ordovician limestone distribution area of Northern China. Because there is the 500-800 metre thickness of Ordovocian limestone and the well developed Karst containsl plentiful water, Karst water can have more than 100 Kg/cm pressure. Limestone aquifers have only distances of several metres or several decade metres to coal seam, Karst water can enter the aquituge and even the coal seam, large eruptions often occur. For example, a mine of 3 million ton production capacity had an eruption of 2053 cubic metres per minute. This is the largest confined-water eruption which has brought enormous economic damage and threatened the safe production of coal mining. Therefore, the prevention and cure of Ordovician water has immense advantage to the development of the coal industry. There are several decades experience in the prevention of Ordovician water-eruption in China. The prevention of Ordovician water-eruption has two kinds of plans. 1) dewatering and depression: it refers to dewatering of aquifers as roofs of seam and depression of aquifers as floors of seam in mining areas. 2) comprehensive prevention under the condition of having water pressure in aquiters. Due to enormous water, electricity, equipment and lots of other factors, the former isn't used extensively, the latter tits to China's actual conditions and is used widely. I In an optical microscope, mild attack by cyanide solutions on various minerals can be observed by means of colour changes as well as etching patterns. However, the mineral may not be identifiable due to the coloured film. In some cases, a transfer algorithm between mechanical stages enables the surface-altered mineral to be identified in the SEM. A more severe attack may not be so informative, as it is not known whether the mineral attacked has been completely dissolved away. The leaching behaviour of some common minerals is described.

It is the aim of this paper to review recent research in understanding the role of cyanide in the elution of gold. Under conditions of severe pre-treatment (high temperatures and levels of cyanide), the dynamics of elution are determined mainly by the adsorption equilibrium and the flow conditions in the column. When conditions are less favourable for desorption, transport phenomena are rate controlling. The most important sub-processes of elution are the changes in cyanide, potassium and gold concentrations, as well as the change in passivation of the carbon surface. Mathematical models to simulate the various sub-processes are described briefly.The presence of an irreversibly adsorbed species such as AuCN on the carbon is determined mainly by the pH, temperature and the type of carbon. Cyanide in the pre-treatment step will convert the AuCN to reversibly adsorbed Au(CN)2. Competition between cyanide and Au(CN)z for adsorption sites will enhance the elution of gold, but plays a minor role at elevated temperatures. The most important effect of cyanide is its reaction with the functional groups on the carbon to passivate the surface for the adsorption of anionic metal cyanides and thereby promote the elution of gold. This passivation, caused by the degradation of cyanide, is strongly temperature dependent. Free cyanide in the elution step of an AARL elution is of lesser importance than the cyanide in the pre-treatment step. Elution without cyanide is possible only after cold acid washing, and has been proven on plant scale.

The Highlands Region of Papua New Guinea has 3 major national highways. The locations of these national highways are shown in Figure 1. The Highlands Highway begins at Lae City on the coast and passes through the Highlands towns of Goroka, Kundiawa and Mt Hagen. It terminates at Togoba approximately 10km out of Mt Hagen town. The Enga Highway begins at Togoba and passes through the towns of Wapenamanda, Wabag and Laiagam. It terminates at the giant Porgera Gold Mine. The Southern Highlands Highway also begins at Togoba and passes through the major towns of Mendi, and Tari. It terminates at Koroba station, near the Hides Gas Field. Two separate Feeder roads intersecting the main highway service both the Kutubu Oil Project and the Hides Gas Field. These national Highways play a very important role in the development of Papua New Guinea. Goods and services are delivered to the bulk of the population of the Highlands Region using these highways. Heavy machinery and equipment for the mining and petroleum projects of Porgera, Hides and Kutubu are transported using these roads.

An experimental induration facility has been developed and used for conducting iso- thermal tests and plant simulation studies on the thermal induration of iron ore pellets. The influence of time, temperature, lime content, ore type, shale content and particle-size dis- tribution (e.g. Blaine Index) is being studied in a continuing programme. The present paper deals with experiments relating to the first three of these parameters and illustrates the use of an experimental design suitable for statistical analysis. The relations between isothermal data and the results of complete simulation rests are discussed.

A Train Performance Calculator (TPC) is an essential tool in railway operations, as a means of acquiring quickly a precise measure of the performance of the system. Traditionally the TPC was used in the form of program for a large computer. By employing an efficient integration algorithm and tailoring the program to suit the computer system it is shown that it is possible to devise a TPC for a mini computer. The resulting low running costs and flexibility of operation makes this a useful design tool. This TPC was developed to study problems associated with a single track railway operation. It was applied specifically to study the railway operated by the Mt. Newman Mining Co. Limited in the Pilbara region of W.A. to transport iron ore from the mine to the port. The TPC was used to calculate the effects of changes to locomotive power, to train size, to the track and to the amount of traffic. Its accuracy was checked by comparing its performance with that of the actual trains.

From depths of 400 - 600 m, coal is transported by a conveyor in a drift or a bulk winder in a shaft, whilst men and/or materials are transported by a slope hauler or a cage winder. Assessment of the effect of alternative combinations on the key cost factors - output, capital, labour cost and construction time - allows the optimum choice for particular circumstances, there being no uniform solution.

Willemite (Zn2SiO4) is one of the main zinc carriers in several Neoproterozoic carbonate-hosted non-sulfide deposits ofNamibia and Zambia. Willemite commonly replaces sphalerite, but it may also replace the carbonate host rocks. Fluid inclusions, cathodoluminescence petrography and trace element geochemistry are crucial to distinguish between hypogene, high temperature and low temperature (possibly) supergene willemites. A global period of willemite mineralisation, extending from Cambrian to Lower Ordovician has been proposed for the southern hemisphere. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. Tectonic subsidence plots have been calculated for well, extrapolated-well and significant off-well (seismically-based) locations in the Vulcan Sub-basin and adjacent highs (western Timor Sea). The subsidence curves have been normalized to a common datum, the distinctive "near top Permian" marker, and corrected for sediment compaction, palaeobathymetry, eustatic sea-level change and loading effects.Four principal phases of post-Permian basin development are recognised and quantitatively described by integrating the results of the sub-sidence analysis into the regional (e.g. recent Ocean Drilling Program-derived) framework of the tectonic evolution of the North West Shelf. They are1. the Triassic-mid Jurassic Westralian Superbasin intracratonic phase,2. the late Jurassic-early Cretaceous North West Shelf rift phase,3. the mid Cretaceous-Palaeogene North West Shelf subsidence phase, and4. the Neogene-present Timor collision phase. Rapid Triassic tectonic subsidence occurred in an intracratonic setting, possibly subsequent to aborted late Palaeozoic rifting. Intracratonic sub-sidence mechanisms such as deep crustal metamorphism and/or intrustion and regional tectonic compression are invoked in addition to any post-rift thermal subsidence which may have occurred.

The excavation of sandstone of generally medium strength for the Liverpool Link Line by Dosco Mark 2A Roadheaders has demonstrated the versatility and good performance of road- headers in suitable rock formations. A description is given of the strata traversed by the tunnels together with descriptions of equipment and crews, excavation sequences, operating difficulties and the results achiev- ed. In addition tunnel construction is des- cribed for a difficult section where there was only O.Sm clearance between invert and a four lane vehicular tunnel below, and O.5m clearance between tunnel crown and a century old sewer above.

SustainabilityÆs imperative of economic development in tandem with social advancement and environmental protection is widely accepted, but much debate remains about the practical implications for the minerals processing technologies and practices for the future. Experience in other industry sectors however suggests that sustainability can be a value-adding framework for innovation in processing technologies, business models and management systems. This position paper explores how sustainability can drive innovation in minerals processing, by reviewing pertinent ideas and experiences gained in non-minerals sectors. Sustainable innovations can generally be broadly ranked from incremental to transformative, with each category having its own typical improvement potential, timescale and technological and operational challenges. This leads to a æmud mapÆ for sustainable innovation in minerals processing with three distinct tracks: eco-efficient operations; sustainable plant design and sustainable processing. Competing models for the sustainable innovation process through either forecasting or back-casting, have in common the strong reliance on vision, perspective and competency, which in turn highlights the importance of sustainability frameworks. Such sustainability frameworks provide normative goals and option elicitation prompts to assist with the analysis of current processes and scoping of more sustainable alternatives. A comparative analysis of five prominent environmental sustainability frameworks revealed three cross cutting sustainability themes that challenge current resource processing technologies and practices. These are: fate of materials (zero dissipation of materials); compatibility of materials and processes; and materials intensity of industrial products and processes. Although the sustainability concepts presented in this paper have not been extensively road tested in the minerals processing industry, there is ample evidence that recent initiatives in the Australian resource sector illustrate the applicability of the proposed framework. It is therefore argued that more in-depth assessment of sustainable innovation concepts would be a valuable contribution to the sustainable resource processing theory and practice.

Selection of mining methods, stope dimensions and stoping sequences is usually based on comparisons with other similar orebodies or rocktypes. Rock mechanics principles assist the process, which can be further improved by application of rock mechanics' models - in particular, computer based stress analysis techniques. These models vary in capabilities and potential application but, basically, can be subdivided into techniques which only model the surface of excavations, and those which model the total volume to be analysed. To address the wide range of geometries, stoping methods and sequences, and geomechanical environments at Mount Isa Mines, a number of models have been developed. By presenting examples of their actual and potential application it is demonstrated that appropriate use of these techniques will assist in the determination of mining parameters and improve ore recovery. Examples presented cover sequencing in tabular and massive orebodies, location of shafts and shaft pillars, and backfill and hanging-wall stability. It is concluded that surface techniques are more appropriate for regional analyses and volume techniques are more suited to analyses of detailed, local geometry. The Chatree deposit is located in the central portion of Loei Fold Belt, which extends from Lao PDR in the north through centralThailand to Cambodia in the south. Epithermal gold-silver mineralisation at Chatree occurs as veins/veinlets and stockworks with minor breccia in volcaniclastic and volcano-sedimentary rocks of andesitic to basaltic andesite composition and Permo-Triassic age. This preliminary oxygen isotope study mainly focuses on vein quartz of Au-Ag bearing mineralization (Stage 2) and a few samples of late Stage 4 quartz ¦ calcite veins. Quartz from Au-Ag bearing mineralisation has oxygen isotope values ranging from 8.1 to 12.3ë with the lowest values generally occurring at the deeper level (140 m below the surface). The late barren quartz ¦ calcite veins (Stage 4) tend to have higher oxygen isotope values ranging from 11.9 to 12.0ë. The oxygen isotope composition of the Chatree ore fluids were calculated at 250¦C, 300¦C and 350¦C based on homogenisation temperatures of fluid inclusions. The calculated oxygen isotopic composition of the Chatree ore fluid ranges between -1 and 6ë that overlaps with both meteoric and magmatic compositions. This shift in oxygen isotope compositions may relate to processes such as water rock-interaction and/or mixing of meteoric and magmatic fluids. It is interesting to note that the lowest quartz oxygen isotope values are spatially more or less confined to the prominent structures in the centre of the major ore zones. These structures may have been acted as conduits for higher temperature magmatic fluids. The quartz oxygen isotope values increase outwards from the centre of the main ore zones to the margin of the pits possibly due to mixing of magmatic fluids with lower temperature meteoric water. Whole rock oxygen and hydrogen isotope studies are in progress to investigate isotopic trends in the wall rock away from the ore zone. The systematic variation of oxygen isotopes in quartz from the mineralised veins and adjacent wall rocks could potentially be used as a vector to ore. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. THOSE who have had occ.asion to sample a mine not infrequently find that it is impossible to take their sample cuts at regular distances apart, owing to the ground being close timbered, a stope having been taken out, or some other cause. When such is the case a tedious calculation becomes necessary in order to obtain an accurate result. A conscientious man will make the tedious calculation, but one who is inclined to be lazy, or who does not recognize the importance of accuracy, or has not the time, may be satisfied with either the arithmetical or weighted arithmetical mean result.There are two main systems of taking samples when the cuts are taken-(l) at equal distances, (2) at unequal distances. When the samples are out at equal distances apart there are three methods of computing the assay value :-1 (a) By Arithmetical Mean. The sum of the values and sum of the widths are each divided by the total number of samples, in order to obtain the value and width respectively, no allowance being made for the relative widths arid values. The result isabsolutely inaccurate, and should never be used under any circumstances.1 (b) By Geometrical Mean. The assay widths ie, feet %, feet oz, inch dwt, &c, are added together and the sum of these is divided by the sum of the widths.

Project Hobson involves the replacement of an existing 90-year-old above-ground sewer that crosses Hobson Bay in Auckland, New Zealand, and which is nearing the end of its economic life, with a 3 km long, 3.7 m internal diameter segmentally-lined bored tunnel. The $118 M project will offer several benefits to the owner, Watercare Services Ltd, and the local community:provide capacity to meet projected growth in the region,virtually eliminate wastewater overflows into Hobson Bay and the Waitemata Harbour, andremove an obtrusive visual feature and open up the bay for recreational purposes. The geology in the region is a sedimentary formation, which has been significantly influenced by volcanic activity; 49 volcanoes are present within 20 km of the nearby city centre. The geology along the alignment is dominated by two palaeovalleys which have been infilled with a combination of marine alluvium and volcanic deposits. Watercare Services Limited has elected to manage and share tunnelling risk through, among other key measures, the implementation of a geotechnical baseline report (GBR); one of the first uses of this type of document in Australasia. This paper describes the general principles behind the use of a GBR, the development of the GBR used in Project Hobson and some lessons learnt.

The Imperial Smelting Furnace operated by Sulphide Corporation Pty. Limited at its Cockle Creek zinc-lead smelter was recently equipped with tuyeres angled at 25 degrees instead of the usual 10 degrees. This change was prompted by the results of model studies undertaken by tha Research Department of Imperial Smelting Processes Limited, at Avonmouth in the United Kingdom, and by the favourable results of operating trials on the Cockle Creek furnace using bent-tip tuyeres to simulate 25 degree inclination. The use of 25 degree angle tuyeres has made it possible to operate with lower zinc values in discard slag and has improved hearth stability over a wider range of sinter quality and composition.

It is argued that the capture of par- ticles by bubbles is primarily caused by hydrophobic ("structural") attraction forces. Neither dispersion forces nor double-layer forces can account for hydro- phobicity, though the latter are known to influence the kinetics of capture. The recent experiments of Israelachvili and Pashley (Nature, 300: 341-342, 1982) with hydrophobic mica plates provide the first measurements of the range and magni- tude of hydrophobic interaction forces.

East Guangdong tin province overlaps the southmost part of the mesozoic magmatic arcof continental margin type in Southeast China and is dominated by mesozoic syntectic magmatism,which associated to tin mineralization. It is distinguished from Nanling tin province but quite close to NW Bolivian tin province in both tectonic and magmatic relations.Tin deposit's mostly of cassiterite-sulfide, cassiterite-silicate formations are localized along exsocontact zone of granitoid batholith or stock, boundary area of volcanic depression, or, within volcanic edifice. Petrochemistry studies show tin was concentrated as intermediate-acidic magma evolved by fractional crystallization. Xiling tin deposit of vein type related to extrusive... the lava dome was formed at T C 221-301 and at very shellow depth,seems to correspond to type A in classification for Bolivia tin deposits by J.N.Grant. Tashan tin deposit of dissemination type related to hypergene intrusive facies,with mineralization occured in endocontact zone of granite porphyry dykes is considered as porphyry type,which spported by H-0 isotope and gas-liquid inclusion evidences. It formed at T C 250-430, comparable to Bolivia porphyry tin deposits,but at a greater depth 1.3 3.0km.A model for known tin deposits in East Guangdong was worked out. A good prospecting perspective was revealed for the potential type of tin deposit in East Guangdong--subvolcanic porphyry tin deposit.

The ownership, policies, organisation, structure, market, financial considerations and communications of a large resource project vary significantly through its discovery, feasibility, development and production phases. The extent of these changes, from discovery in 1957 through to 1979, is examined for the Mt. Newman iron ore project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia and some of the factors that influenced it are detailed. This shows that only some of the influences are under the control of the mine owner/operator, despite their significant impact on the returns for the massive capital invested. The effect of the general business climate on the various phases is also examined.
