The first mining in Western Australia probably commenced some 40 000 years ago when Aborigines arrived and began quarrying stone for tools and weapons, and ochre for decoration. The earliest documented mining by European settlers took place in 1850 on a small lead vein in the bed of the Murchison River, reported by the explorer A C Gregory. However, it was the discovery of gold in the Kimberley region in 1885 that first drew wider attention to the State's mineral potential.

Historically, most of the gold produced from Kalgoorlie has been derived from the gold and gold telluride Golden Mile lode systems dominantly hosted within the Golden Mile Doler-ite and to a lesser extent, Paringa Basalt. In more recent times the gold-quartz stockwork ore bodies within Unit 8 of the Golden Mile Dolerite at Mt Charlotte have become increasingly imp-ortant.Extensive low grade gold mineralisation has now been defined to the north and east of Kalgoorlie within rock units of the Golden Mile sequence not generally considered to be highly prospective.Two main types of mineralisation have been defined. The first comprises variably mineralised and altered quartz-albite porphyr-ies emplaced within talc-carbonated Hannans Lake Serpentinite (Mystery deposit). There is intense fuchsitic, pyritic and carbonate alter-ation of the serpentinite adjacent to the porphyry bodies. Gold mineralisation is assoc-iated with fine-grained disseminations and veinlets of pyrite and narrow quartz and quartz-tourmaline veining within the porphyry and adjacent fuchsite-carbonate rock. This paper aims to provide a brief overview of the Australian Coal Bed Methane (CBM) industry and more importantly the challenges to sustainable management of the industryÆs by-product, groundwater. In a country where water is scarce and having gone through one of the worst recorded droughts it is vital that this important industry be seen to be managing water in a responsible manner with the greatest environmental and social benefit. Benefits of the water from CBM wells can be enhanced through treatment to produce potable water for domestic or stock purposes, water for irrigation or aquaculture or lower quality or untreated water for industrial or mining purposes. Other options are re-injection of raw water or waste from the treatment processes or discharge to surface waterways. The critical change and difference between CBM projects and traditional oil and gas operations should be that where possible water is no longer disposed of via evaporation ponds with the dual legacy of waste of the water resource and an environmental contamination problem with the remaining salt and brine product.

LITHOPROBE is a national, collaborative research grogram with the general objective of understanding the teotectonic evolution of the North American continent through multidisciplinary lithospheric studies in carefully selected areas of Canada. Six transect areas are investigating Precambrian evolution, although only in two of these is the research well evolved. The Archean Kapuskasing Structural Zone in Ontario is confirmed as an upthrust slice of upper to mid crust exposed at the surface. The Late Proterozoic Keweenawan mid-continent rift is shown to be the deepest known rift on Earth and the Grenville collisional zone of Ontario and Quebec involves crustal scale imbrication and ramping of deeply buried rocks to the surface. Two transect areas are investigating Phanerozoic evolution. In the Newfoundland Appalachians the geologically defined tectonostratigraphic domains do not coincide with lower crustal blocks defined by seismic reflection data. The Southern Cordillera Transect in western Canada is examining the nature, timing and dynamics of the assembly of the Cordillera, and particularly the role of accreted terranes. Work in the eastern and central segments has extended the known western limit of the North American craton at least IOO km westward and crustal-scale ramps associated with metamorphic core complexes have been identified.

The Golden Cross is the first large precious metals mine to be both commissioned and closed in the æmodernÆ era in New Zealand. This paper discusses the life cycle of the Golden Cross mine, with emphasis on the closure process and post closure management.   The closure process has generally been very well managed, and successful, but in spite of that some on-going issues remain unresolved. Nearly nine years after the end of mining the mine owners are still actively managing the site, with no immediate end to that in sight.   The site has been described as atypical, due to the identification of a deep seated landslide below the tailings and waste rock storage facilities. However that should not be given too much emphasis when addressing the overall closure and post-closure management issues, which could well apply to other existing and future mine sites in New Zealand.   The Golden Cross can provide valuable lessons for other miners, and the issues arising at this site should be watched closely by the industry as a whole.

Over the last three million years, porphyry and epithermal mineralisation in the Baguio Mineral District has been driven by calc-alkaline magmatism associated with the subduction of the South China Sea plate and the Scarborough seamounts beneath northern Luzon, Philippines. Coupled with extreme uplift and exhumation rates, mineralisation in the Baguio District has been responsible for the emplacement of over 922 million grams of gold. As one of the oldest intrusive bodies associated with the Baguio District, the Black Mountain Cu-Au deposit consists of at least five intrusive phases overprinted by potassic and propylitic alteration and sulfide mineralisation. Gold ore grades are low and molybdenum grades high with respect to other porphyry Cu-Au deposits in the Baguio Mineral District. An EXTENDED ABSTRACT is available for download. The smelting of concentrates and secondary materials has been subject to increasing challenges in recent years due to declining grades of feed materials, increasing impurity levels and ever more stringent environmental regulations. In addition there has been a growing focus on maximising the efficiency of energy usage and recovery of values. New opportunities have been created with rising metals prices and improved systems for the collection of secondary materials, giving rise to a need for more flexible process solutions.This paper focuses on a number of specific cases where a process solution has been developed using the Outotec« Ausmelt Process to meet particular feed material challenges and overcome limitations inherent when employing traditional pyrometallurgical processes.The first case involves the development and commercial implementation of a smelting process to recover values from zinc smelting residues typically deposited into dams as a waste product. The second case describes the application of the Ausmelt process for the smelting and converting of secondary copper feed materials, including e-waste. These materials contain a wide range of metals and plastics and need to be processed appropriately to maximise the recovery of values whilst avoiding environmental problems. The third case study covers the smelting of nickel concentrates containing elevated magnesia levels as well as nickel bearing catalysts with high alumina content, neither of which can be readily processed when employing traditional pyrometallurgical technologies. The Fortescue Metals Group story began in 2003 with a vision to establish an infrastructure project that would connect the stranded iron ore deposits of the Pilbara region of Western Australia with the steel mills of Asia. Following exploration successes in the Chichester Ranges using their new exploration model, Fortescue established significant iron ore resources at Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek during 2004 and 2005. By May 2006 the definitive feasibility study for mine, rail and port was completed, many of the key government approvals had been obtained, product development and market acceptance were complete and 1.07 Bt of total proved plus probable iron ore reserves were defined to support a 20 year mine life from the Cloudbreak and Christmas Creek deposits. Project construction commenced in September 2006 following a successful $3.2 billion capital raising. By April 2008, the mine and processing plant at Cloudbreak were completed along with the Herb Elliott port facility at Port Hedland and 256 km of heavy haul railroad linking the mine with the port. Mining of overburden commenced at Cloudbreak in late 2007 and by 15 May 2008 the first shipment of iron ore had departed for China. In the first 12 months of operation total shipments amounted to 24.6 M wet metric tonnes with weighted mean composition of 58.9 per cent Fe (64.4 per cent Fe calcined), 4.3 per cent SiO2, 2.0 per cent Al2O3 and 0.047 per cent P. Exactly 3.5 years between the Cloudbreak discovery hole and commercial production. The project success depended on many technical breakthroughs including a new exploration model, application of the surface miner as the main mining production unit, design of a new marketable fines product called æRocket FinesÆ, a highly efficient ædesandÆ flow sheet for upgrading of 2.4 per cent alumina run-of-mine to 1.9 per cent alumina Rocket Fines, 40 t axle loads for the heavy haul railway and a high capacity-highly automated port facility.

This presentation discusses NASA-funded research on the ability of hyperspectral remote sensing to map diagnostic acid rock drainage (ARD) mineralogy that adversely affects water quality within watershed and to determine the relative contributions of natural ARD sources of metals and acidity to that drainage. Ground-based reflectance spectroscopy, combined with water chemistry, is used to identify mineralogical and chemical variations throughout a watershed. Integrated with hyperspectral data acquired from airborne remote sensing platforms, such as the NASA Airborne Visible Infrared Imaging Spectrometer (AVIRIS) sensor, a methodology has been developed that should improve environmental assessments and tracking of impacts on and from drainages. Phase I of this project focuses on a drainage basin (Lake Creek), tributary to the upper Arkansas River in central Colorado, which is impacted by natural acid rock drainage from areas of high-sulfide hydrothermal alteration. This project builds upon research and inventory efforts by the Colorado Geological Survey (CGS) to identify hydrothermal alteration that is the primary source or is contributing to acidic and toxic drainage in Colorado. This presentation will cover ground and airborne hyperspectral remote sensing techniques and results and water analyses for seasonal high-flow and low-flow conditions in Lake Creek. Identifying correlations between mineralogy, especially mineralogy that can be identified through airborne remote sensing, and water chemistry is a key focus of this project. Of particular interest are low-pH iron phases such as jarosite, ferrihydrite, schwertmannite, copiapite, and transitional amorphous phases as well as AlOH phases from higher, although still acidic, pH environments which are observed to mix with the iron precipitates within the streams draining from the hydrothermal systems. Drainage in the Lake Creek watershed derives from the Grizzly Peak caldera (Oligocene), which exhibits extensive hydrothermal alteration. Alteration types include silicic, quartz-sericite, quartz-sericite-pyrite, advanced argillic, and argillic. By understanding the chemistry of a naturally impacted drainage and its relationship to the surrounding geology, the project goal is to allow more efficient and complete identification of such sources in mineralised terranes through remote sensing technology.

The volumetric method of estimating hydrocarbon resources and recoverable reserves is and probably will remain a dominant method in petroleum engineering. The method is technically very simple, but has one main problem: how to express, measure and properly handle the variable and complex uncertainty of each estimate. The computer age brought in the Monte Carlo Simulation method which enables correct arithmetic operation using data with specified probability distribution. However, several problems are still not solved uniquely and still exist. For instance, the determination and description of the distribution of single parameters, the determination of the degree of dependency between parameters (e.g. hydrocarbon saturation-porosity), and standard probabilist- ic definition of generally used categories (e.g. proved, probable, possible). Methods for handling these problems are discussed.

A background characterisation study was carried out in the Sangre de Cristo mountains, New Mexico, to: quantify naturally occurring contaminant loads from mineralised areas; define site-specific background concentrations; and to determine key factors controlling spatial and temporal variations in contaminant concentrations. The study included a comprehensive sampling and testing program (paste pH/EC, ABA, leach extraction tests) of soil/bedrock from mineralised areas (including erosional scars), and a ground water and surface water quality monitoring program in selected mineralised watersheds. Results demonstrate that high concentrations of contaminants occur naturally in ground and surface water draining the mineralised area of the Red River basin. The erosional scars were found to represent the major source of acid rock drainage (ARD) (~66 per cent) in this area due to: high rates of weathering and erosion, which continually exposes sulfide-bearing outcrops; and high rates of run-off as a result of high elevation and lack of vegetation. The scar material is generally very acidic (paste pH ranges from 8.5 to 1.5; average = 3.6) with highly elevated concentrations of sulfate and leachable metals. The composition and concentration of leachable metals vary significantly, not only between scars but also within a given scar. While all streams draining the various scar watersheds are highly acidic, each has a characteristic æfingerprintÆ of sulfate and metal concentrations. Most of the run-off from the scars infiltrates into alluvial debris flow aprons and reaches the Red River via groundwater flow.

Geophysical anomalies at Puhipuhi reflect both diverse lithologies and different degrees of hydrothermal alteration. Most significant is a strong negative gravity anomaly (up to 50 g.u.), encompassing but extending beyond areas of known alteration, which is modelled as a deep zone (up to 3 km) of reduced density in the host greywacke basement. This zone, interpreted as being due to alteration (at least in part), closely correlates with the extent of overlying basalt flows. The gravity data indicate that the most intense alteration occurs below the basalts and correlates with the location of previously inferred hydrothermal upflow zones. These observations suggest that the basalt may have acted as a cap rock to a mineralising geothermal system. Aeromagnetic data identify highly variable but typically low magnetisations in the basalts which suggests that alteration may have been contemporaneous with volcanism. These geophysical data at Puhipuhi confirm the locations of centres of known alteration and suggest potential exploration targets below the basalt cap where there is no surface manifestation of alteration. Further implications of these results are discussed in Locke et al. (1999).

Alcoa of Australia operates three Alumina refineries in the South West of Western Australia at Kwinana adjacent to the South suburbs of Perth and at Pinjarra and Wagerup in rural settings 100 and 150 kilometres south of Perth respectively (see Figure 1). Alcoa's total alumina production is currently around five million tonnes per annum and this will increase to 5.5 million tonnes by early 1990. Further expansion of production is likely if current world aluminium demand trends continue. Alcoa's refineries utilise bauxite mined in the nearby Darling Range which is low grade by world standards having around 32 % by weight extractable alumina (by comparison Weipa bauxite yields around 55% alumina). This means that for every tonne of alumina produced two tonnes of solid wastes remain and therefore while we in Western Australia can boast of hosting the largest alumina industry in the world with around 18% of total world production we suffer from having the lion's share or 40% of the world's bauxite residues to dispose of. In its Western Australian setting the management of these residues in a manner which is acceptable to the community creates many challenges. These are primarily due to the mass and volume of waste produced, its chemical and physical characteristics and the environmental features of the local area including close proximity of neighbours, competing land uses and the presence of natural resources such as surface water and groundwater. In addition the trend towards more stringent statutory environmental controls and greater political and community awareness of environmental issues means that we must be able to demonstrate improvements that will reduce the considerable adverse impacts of past practices. Of course we must also try to keep the overall cost of residue disposal as low as possible to maintain our competitiveness with refineries which may have much smaller volumes of waste to dispose of and less environmental constraints.

The world steel industry underwent rapid growth from 1950 to 1970. Since that time, production growth has been relatively slow, with declining production in the developed countries and increasing production in some newly developing countries. Since 1970, Western World crude steel production has been static at around 450 million tonnes, with cycles around this level in a 100 million tonnes band.

The progress between 1983 and 1989 towards Management Guidelines for R16 was extremely slow and painful because protection of the mining heritage was a new function and administrative activity not referred to in any Queensland mining law. Also, until 2 December 1989 the Queensland political climate was anti-preservation. Therefore an understanding had to be achieved between John Hay, the Mines Department and the National Parks and Wildlife Service, to ensure preservation of the mining machinery in situ rather than being removed to a town site such as in Ravenswood.

The development of structural defects in the overburden material immediately behind a production blast was studied using surface and subsurface techniques. A significant increase in vertical and horizontal fracture intensity was recorded. The extent of fracturing into the highwall appeared to be dependent on the structural and petrologic characteristics of the various lithological units and the relative position of the explosive charges. A shallow zone of disruption to a depth of 10 m and extending to around 30 m from the newly formed highwall crest was recorded. Horizontal fractures in lower units of the overburden sequence were recorded at distances up to 50 m from the new highwall Face.

The coastline is. an incomparable stretch of sea coast known as Ninety Mile Beach. Two gas pipelines and two oil pipelines carrying hydrocarbons from thb'Bass Strait fields to the markets of Australia cross this beach. They cannot be seen as they are laid in trenching stretch- ing many miles out to sea and the beach was restored to its natural state. Even where the dunes were disturbed, suitable grass was sown thus consolidating the sand and preventing erosion. Ninety Mile Beach is but one of the many key.wildlife and recreational areas that our operations must be concerned with. Others include Westernport and Corner Inlet, but the one discussed in this paper in particular is the platform area of the Bass Strait itself. Never was the old adage "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" more meaningful than in offshore oil production. All are well aware of some of the events of the past several years that resulted in large and costly oil spills. Far less is known, seen or publicised about the measures and developments that are undertaken to ensure that such events do not occur. We also have well developed plans for response in the event of an emergency situation, which can be initiated with great rapidity. Our responsibility is to ensure that with the best of engineering technology and operating procedures, spills do not occur.

In stratigraphic orebodies, estimation of footwall and hangingwall location is often of more importance than grade estimation. Contoured grade estimates often produce smeared boundaries and the use of accumulations and thicknesses as variables re-introduces the original problem: location of the point at which the estimate is to be made. The paper introduces statistical and geostatistical techniques for the solution of the problem and illustrates the techniques with a case study from Mount Isa, one of the world's largest producing silver-lead-zinc deposits. Solutions for calculating variograms in orebodies of variable dip, strike and plunge are presented together with relative variograms for individual metals, metal accumulation and orebody thickness. Optimal methods for hangingwall and footwall location are introduced and illustrated with an example. Orebody boundaries are then kriged after which individual metal grades are kriged within the estimated boundaries. The boundary estimates are compared with manually interpreted boundaries and known boundaries in mined-out areas. Grade and tonnage estimates are compared in mined-out areas.
