The mining industry seeks to engage with and respond to stakeholders through open consultation processes during the various phases of a mining project (Department of Industry, Tourism and Resources, 2006). Two Australian Coal Association Research Program (ACARP) funded projects conducted in the Bowen Basin coalfields in Central Queensland investigated the use of a stakeholder panel for the evaluation of mine site rehabilitation. The panel members were drawn from the local and regional area, and represented neighbouring landholders, traditional owners, AgForce, local government, conservation groups and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) such as Greening Australia and the Fitzroy Basin Association. The approach of utilising stakeholders to establish rehabilitation criteria was proposed as an alternative to the established practice of assessing rehabilitated areas against a suite of quantitative completion criteria; eg >70 per cent vegetative ground cover or <5 t/ha/a soil loss. The basis of this approach recognises the reality that the definition of completion criteria has proved problematic over the last 40 years with no broad consensus reached on the suite, let alone the metrics; eg the exact cover level that will benchmark acceptance of the mine site rehabilitation.CITATION:Merritt, J L, 2016. This study examines the application of Landsat TM data to the identification of hydro- thermal alteration in the arid terrain of the El Salvador region of north Chile. Numerical reflectance values were extracted from the digital Landsat TM data for a variety of rock surfaces, including four parts of the El Salvador gossan, for each of six spectral bands. These reflectance values were analysed statistically in order to select the three spectral bands, combined as a colour composite image, that are most efficient in discriminating different varieties of alteration and for general geolog- ical interpretation. The most cost effective com- posite image for this area is a combination of bands 1,4 and 7 as the blue, green and red components respectively, with simple contrast enhancement. This image is superior to some much more expensive enhancement techniques and allows unambiguous identification of areas of hydrothermal alteration larger than about 50m. The Mineral Resources Audit is a five-year Program established to produce a comprehensive and objective assessment of the mineral resources of New South Wales, including prospective resources. The goals of the Program are to improve planning and land use decision-making; attract exploration and minerals related investment; help the Department to identify and fill gaps in knowledge; and develop methods to identify and quantify resource potential and prospectivity. To achieve the goals of the Audit it is necessary to assemble and enhance a large amount of information and it is necessary to spatially analyse this information using computer-based Geographic Information Systems (GIS) which allow the collection, storage, transformation and display of large quantities of spatial data. An extensive range of both map-based and textual data can be employed in spatial analysis and resources and geoscience modelling. In order to use this information, data sets have to be corrected and standardised. Many data sets need to be classified. An objective of the Audit Program is the spatial analysis of the State, region-by-region, and the release of cleaned-up multiple digital data sets as packages which include upgraded mineral deposit information, 'seamless' geological map layers showing lithology, structures and stratigraphy, and processed and classified geophysical map layers. These regional packages are important reference sets for the mineral resources industry and will assist delineation of regional exploration targets.

"A geotechnical centrifuge can characterise and model the interaction of tailings and fluids over very long time periods by accelerating drainage and consolidation processes. This technology can be considered an environmental ‘time machine’ for designing and evaluating tailings storage projects and verifying numerical models. The Broadbent G-18 geotechnical centrifuge (2 m diameter, up to 875 rev/min) and associated equipment is a unique facility commissioned in 2011 at UNSW Australia for applied research in low-permeability materials such as mine tailings. Two centrifuge modules are available: the permeameter module for characterisation and physical modelling and the strongbox module for physical modelling.This paper presents examples of geotechnical centrifuge applications for the: consolidation of slurries and dewatering design of earthen barriers compatible with tailings chemistry prediction of contaminant mobility. The specifications and capability of the UNSW Australia geotechnical centrifuge and associated instrumentation is also presented, along with preliminary analysis of the confidence intervals associated with permeability testing of a set of samples of varying heterogeneity. Drainage velocity through a mine tailings sample increases linearly with g-level in the centrifuge permeameter until tailings consolidation occurs. Alternatively, geotechnical centrifuge experiments can be designed to limit consolidation so as to quantify permeability changes that may occur with geochemical interactions between fluids and mine tailings or earthen containments. Reactive solute transport through mine tailings can be simulated at realistic solid:liquid ratios when chemical equilibrium is maintained during geotechnical centrifuge testing. Carefully designed physical models of tailings disposal tested at accelerated gravity can therefore provide a realistic evaluation of tailings consolidation and drainage and the potential for subsurface migration of contaminants from mine tailings over long time periods.CITATION:Timms, W and Anderson, D, 2015. An important problem in open pit mine planning is that of detennining the optimum ultimate pit limits of the mine. These limits are that contour which is the result of extracting the volume of material which provides the total maximum profit while satisfying certain practical operational requirements such as safe wall slopes. The determination of the optimum pit contour provides information that is essential in the evaluation of the economic potential of the mineral deposit. A number of optimisation techniques are available for determining this contour with the Lerchs-Grossman and the Network Flow methods being the most favoured. Unfortunately, direct application of these techniques to large ore-bodies may cause considerable difficulties because of the computational time and storage requirements. In this paper, we present a strategy for resolving these problems, and the associated pit design software PITOPTIM (incorporating a fast network flow technique) and a data reducer, BOUND. The results presented highlight the speed and power of the software package rivalling the popular Lerchs-Grossman technique. An application of the software for a sensitivity analysis is also presented and discussed.

Lower transportation costs, improved handling and better utilization efficiency are some of the reasons that make low moisture coal product desirable. There has been considerable interest in the development of effective coal dewatering techniques to achieve this result. One avenue of considerable merit for enhancing dewatering processes is by modification of the surface chemistry of the coalwater slurry system by chemical means, resulting in better performance of existing equipment. This paper reports the results of an investigation of the utility of surface active agents in the enhancement of fine coal dewatering. A large variety of proprietary dewatering agents have been studied in relation to their efficiency in enhancing the dewatering of a number of Australian coals. Properties of particular coals that make them amenable to improved dewatering by particular chemical agents have been identified. Surface studies, including surface tension and zeta potential measurements as a function of surfactant concentration, as well as dewatering assessments, were used. Particular attention was paid to filtration, but the results could be applied to other dewatering systems.

Two versions of a radiometric-type caliper for measuring borehole diameter are described. One, based on the bow-spring principle, is suitable for percussion (exploration) drill holes. The other, which utilizes hemispherical wall contactors actuated by springs, is suitable for blast holes. Both utilize low-power radioactive sources and employ a scintillation detector to measure the "inverse-square law" response of the device to changes in borehole radius. The performance of the device is examined and examples of its use are illustrated.

The Douglas mineral sands deposit is located 75 km north of Hamilton in western Victoria, Australia. The deposit was discovered in the late 1990s by Basin Minerals Limited and purchased by Iluka Resources Ltd in 2002. Prestrip mining commenced in December 2004, with ore mining commencing in August 2005. Douglas is the first of several projects being implemented by Iluka Resources Ltd in the Murray Basin, with all heavy mineral concentrate planned to be treated at the companyÆs mineral separation plant in Hamilton. The mineralisation at Douglas lies along the south-eastern margin of the Murray Basin. It is hosted by marine Pliocene Loxton-Parilla Sands and consists of three discrete deposits; Bondi Main, Bondi West and Bondi East. The mineralised sediments dip at a low angle to the west and lie unconformably beneath a veneer of top soil (50 - 100 mm) and subsoil (up to 600 mm) and between three to 12 m of overburden. The barren overburden, characterised by high clay content (<53 ¦m material) generally provides a stark contrast to the sandy ore, which is between 1 m (parts of Bondi East) and 15 m (Bondi Main) thick. Both overburden and ore are removed utilising standard dry mining techniques using both scraper-bulldozer and truck-excavator combinations. All ore is delivered to run-of-mine (ROM) stockpiles before being reclaimed by front end loader into the processing plant. Grade control at Douglas is based around visual dig control aided by high precision survey, which enables accurate reference to the resource drilling and block model data. Vertical excavator faces, inclined scraper faces plus regular test pits and trenches provide opportunities for in pit mapping and sampling. This data is used to refine not only the resource estimate for Douglas but also the drilling, interpretation and resource modelling methods used for similar deposits across the basin. The foundations of the geological reconciliation process at Douglas are the in pit surveys undertaken each time the mining fleet has completed building a ROM stockpile. These surveys and the subsequent interrogation of resource models enable robust estimations of the heavy mineral content of the stockpiles, which are subsequently used to predict the daily input grades into the plant during their reclamation. Reconciliation of this daily data is then undertaken at the end of each month against metallurgical production data and plant balances. Learnings and results from the reconciliation process are used to further refine subsequent resource models and modelling methods.

A key aspect of seismic management for narrow vein stoping of the west zone at the Beaconsfield Gold Mine has been the development of a fully remote extraction method that does not require personnel access to sill drives within the orebody once stoping commences. Initially, sill driving within the reef is undertaken in a conventional fashion under geological control. Sill drives are developed at a vertical backs-to-floor height ranging from 7 - 12 m. This mining stage includes all activities prior to the commencement of stoping, after which no personnel enter the unstoped section of the sill drive at any time for any purpose. The key aspect of the remote mining cycle is the use of footwall drill drives paralleling the ore drive at a minimum separation of 6 m under survey control. These drives provide the platform for fan drilling of the orebody. Up to 20 m strike panels are blasted in a single shot using electronic blasting techniques. Ore is mucked from the extraction level sill drive using tele-remote loaders. Aerials for tele-remote operation are installed through boreholes from the footwall drive, negating the need for personnel access to the sill drive. Once mucking of a stoping panel is complete, a laser scanning survey instrument is used to survey the final void for subsequent design and production reconciliation purposes. The survey instrument is mounted in the bucket of the tele-remote loader, and is also operated remotely. Finally, tele-remote loaders are used to dump waste rock fill from the upper sill drive. A system of flags and cameras installed in boreholes from the footwall drive assists the operator in locating the live stope edge during the filling cycle, again negating the need for personnel access.

The Whitsunday Volcanics occupy most of the offshore islands from the Whitsunday Group, southeastwards through the Cumberland and Northumberland Groups, possibly extending to the mainland adjacent to Shoalwater Bay, a distance of 370 km. Some of the islands of this group are granitic, but preliminary Rb-Sr data indicate these to represent Permo-Triassic basement. Cretaceous volcanism is interpreted to have occurred during initial rifting prior to the continental breakup of northeastern Australia and subsequent development of the Tasman Basin.The volcanics comprise mainly lithic ignimbrites, with local development of inter-bedded surge and bedded tuff, accretionary lapilli tuffs, lithic concentration zones, and lag deposits. Isolated fluidual rhyolite and dacite domes occur. The deposits are considered subaerially emplaced. A Rb-Sr isochron age for volcanism of 110 Ma is determined from new data. The total thickness of the volcanics is unknown, but a minimum thickness of 4-5 km on Whitsunday Is. is suggested. Eruptive centres are inferred to be distributed throughout the volcanic zone. The volcanics are cut by numerous, dominantly near N-S, dykes ranging from dolerite through to rhyolite in composition.Chemically, the volcanics and dykes exhibit a continuous range of compositions from basaltic andesite, through andesite, dacite, to rhyolite, with minor more alkalic compositions. Phenocryst mineralogy in the silicic rocks is mainly plagioclase, augite, and Fe-Ti oxides, with less frequent quartz and hornblende occurrence. Sr and Nd isoptic compositions for volcanics and dykes are close to mantle values. These data are tentatively interpreted in terms of a lower crustal magma arc source separated from the mantle only a geologically short time prior to Cretaceous magmatism.

Gold mine production in South America was 247.3 tonnes in 1995 up from 156.4 tonnes ten years earlier in 1986. This represents a 58 per cent increase and amounted to 11 per cent of total world gold mine production. The major countries involved in order of production, were: Brazil (67.4 tonnes), Peru (51.5 tonnes),. Chile (48.5 tonnes), Colombia (24.1 tonnes), Venezuela (17.1 tonnes), Bolivia (16.0 tonnes), Ecuador (9.6 tonnes), Guyana (8.8 tonnes), French Guiana (3.3 tonnes) and Argentina (one tonne). The most dramatic increase was reported in Peru where production increased from 10.9 tonnes in 1986 to 51.5 tonnes in 1995, heavily influenced by the production from Minera Yanacocha which began operations in 1993 and produced 17.2 tonnes in 1995.With the reformation of the mining laws and the introduction of investment incentives in all the South American countries in recent years, dozens of major and junior mining companies began flocking into the area in the early-1990s to conduct exploration. A recent study undertaken in Brazil shows that an average of $240 million per year will be expended in this country during the period 1993 - 2010. Twenty-five per cent of this expenditure is expected to be made on gold exploration. Similar figures for Peru are $220 million total per year with 50 per cent for gold; $170 million per year in Argentina with 25 per cent for gold and $120 million ner year in Chile also with 25 Der cent for gold.

While sampling techniques used by the mineral industry continue to improve, sampling is still an area which is often neglected. It is often left to personnel who do not fully appreciate the significance and importance of sampling. Yet sampling and sample processing are of vital importance. There is little point in making major capital investments in the latest analytical equipment and spending considerable time obtaining the best analytical precision, if the sample provided for analysis is seriously biased in the first place.

The Favona Underground Project is located approximately two kilometres east of Martha Mine Open Pit in Waihi, 150 km south east of Auckland, New Zealand.   The underground reserve of 354 koz Au contained in resources of almost 600 koz lies within 600 m of the existing process plant presenting an attractive development target in a challenging environment.   The Martha Mine Open Pit is surrounded by urban housing on the north western edge of Waihi township and the Favona Underground abuts residences on the eastern edge of town. Environmental, community and social licence aspects influence project strategies as the new underground mine extends mining in a town that is planning for closure of current open pit operations in late 2006.   The Favona Underground Project has successfully passed through a detailed feasibility study, the third stage of the five stage Newmont project appraisal system. Methodologies used in the feasibility study and parallel permitting draw on a high level of stakeholder involvement to streamline the development and permitting phases.   This paper discusses the project appraisal process and design innovation required for developing an underground mine adjacent to town.

Water retention, water loss and delay in tailings storage rehabilitation are major challenges for many Coal Mines. Work by Stewart, Backer and Busch in the early 1980s suggested that there were improvements to be made in tailings dewatering and density by the addition of flocculant. This prompted ACARP, in cooperation with Bulga Coal Management (Xstrata), to initiate a research project investigating the impact of flocculant addition on tailings deposition density, water retention and the tendency for tailings to form surface crusts suitable for subsequent rehabilitation. A polyacrylamide-based flocculant (200 - 250 g/tds) was injected into the tailings line immediately prior to disposal into the impoundment area. The flocculated slurry rapidly released clear water and created a beach due to the immediate increase in deposition density. The deposition density increased from 35 per cent w/w to 61 per cent w/w solids within 24 hours and continued to increase to 75 per cent, seven days after treatment. The water capture at the tailings storage facility improved by more than 90 per cent; water which would otherwise be lost from the circuit through retention and evaporation. The impoundment capacity had nearly tripled due to the improvement in initial deposition density from 420 kg/m3 up to 1163 kg/m3. Four weeks after disposal surface crusts were forming on the storage facility, suggesting that there would be less delay between cessation and tailings storage rehabilitation.

BHP Billiton’s Area C iron ore operation has been in production since 2003. During 2010, below water table mining in the Marra Mamba formation commenced and dewatered ore has been successfully processed through the plant.The ability to mine below water table material increases reserves. Pits can be dewatered using a combination of ex-pit and in-pit bores. Critically it is important to allow suffi cient lead time to dewater. For Area C, in-pit bores yield the most water which presents challenges in every day operations when mining around bores. Operationally there are steep learning curves in obtaining equipment, training personnel and setting up infrastructure. Core risks include lifting, refuelling and maintaining gensets. The pipework, extraction and re-establishment work can be very manual.The challenges include blasting, mining, stockpiling, processing, water balance and disposal. Maximising up time on bores whilst minimising impacts to blast practices have evolved. Blast practices now align bores to the edge of patterns. Protecting bores have evolved from stemming bores with rock and re-drilling to using gas bags which require no drills. Based on moisture and material properties, mining of dewatered material can be categorised into three groups:1. normal,2. sheeting, and3. sheeting and top loading.Ore can go straight to the plant ore to drying pads where it takes between one and three months to drain.Stock management of these piles is important to ensure efficiency of the plant. Rules have been established for blending wet material to maintain feed capacity and some modifications to plants have been made. Dewatering of pits poses a challenge for water use. Initially turkey’s nests were established to capture water and use for dust suppression. As water abstraction has increased methods of management include using exhausted pits for storage and evaporators. Managed Aquifer recharge and use in potable water are being considered. An over arching coordination of the capacity and use are required.Important elements in dewatering include:• capacity models,• capital,• long to short planning,• day to day coordination, and • water level monitoring and balances. Boliden's Aitik open pit mine located in northern Sweden, will expand yearly production from 18 to 36 Mt of copper ore during 2010. The expansion includes a new concentrator located 3 km off the pit, two new apron feeder crushers connected to the ore storages and concentrator with conveyors at a total length of 7 km. The concentrator has two lines with autogenous grinding mills and flotation each with a capacity of 18 Mt. Consequently the mine operation has to be expanded. To achieve this, there was several parallel processes ongoing; investments in new equipment, reorganisations, improvement projects in maintenance and productivity. The Aitik 72 project was started to coordinate productivity and mine planning activities. Initially the long-term strategic mine plan called for a total movement of ore and waste to increase from 40 to 72 Mt but has today increased to 89 Mt. Productivity projects have been focused on load and haul activities such as fuel economics (Renstr÷m, 2007), effective utilisation of trucks partly by increasing manning levels, improved dispatch and shovel utilisation focusing on optimal use of loader/truck fleets. The eco-driving projects previously reported have reduced fuel consumption significantly. This project is also a productivity project, as part of the fuel savings comes from minimising idle engine hours due to queues, break-downs, operator shift changes, etc but also from under and overloading. Effective use of truck fleets, ie transport of material, loading and dumping, thus excluding non-productive engine hours has been an essential motivator when deciding the size and number of new trucks required. This has resulted in a reduction of the investment with at least one but maybe two trucks. A third major project was to optimise shovels together with truck fleet by improving short-term, up to two weeks, detailed planning of drilling and shovel activities. Daily scheduled breaks for maintenance as well as planning of shovel utilisation, down to shift level are included in the production plans. KPIs and online production reports, based on real-time monitoring of drill rigs, shovels and trucks, have been an essential tool used regularly to engage and motivate mine production personal and information reporting to management. Several projects have already reached their goals. The projects will continue throughout 2010 to ensure that productivity targets are met.

The relative influences of sinter mineralogy, sintering temperature, solid and pore macro- and microstructure on iron ore sinter physical strength are not yet fully understood. Whilst a range of analysis techniques have been used by researchers to evaluate sinter physical properties and sinter mineralogy, none have been able to directly link sinter mineralogy and physical strength under controlled conditions. CSIRO has developed a unique laboratory method to study the fundamental melting properties of fine iron ores in a laboratory furnace under a controlled temperature and gas atmosphere environment designed to simulate the industrial sintering process. Compacted tablet samples for a 0.41 per cent and a 2.5 per cent Al2O3 series were fired in a tube furnace at various temperatures, cooled, then tumbled using a modified Bond abrasion test apparatus to determine a relative tumble index (TI) at each temperature. Quantitative XRD (QXRD) analysis was then carried out on the tumbled samples and optical image analysis (OIA) was conducted on polished sections of a separately fired compact in each case. The amount of total SFCA was found to decrease with increasing firing temperature for both alumina series with the total amount of SFCA higher in the 2.5 per cent Al2O3 series compared to 0.41 per cent Al2O3 series samples. The increase in the amount of magnetite and hematite with increasing firing temperature was largely at the expense of a decrease in total SFCA. Overall, there was good agreement between the quantitative mineralogy determined from QXRD versus OIA for SFCA, hematite and magnetite. Qualitative analysis of high magnification images of the sinter correlated with both the OIA and QXRD results.

The high-shear colloidal mixer is generally recognised as the most efficient method of mixing cement based grouts. Only recently however has this technology been applied to the production of cemented rockfill (CRF) for use in underground mines in North America. Traditionally, paddle type mixers have been used to produce the cement based slurries required for the preparation of CRF. While considerable success has been achieved with these mixers, tremendous advantages are attained with the colloidal mixer. The combined effect of the highly efficient mixing action and the ability to mix low water/solids ratios, allows for reductions in the cement content for a given strength requirement. Cement can also be replaced by cheaper fillers such as flyash, resulting in further cost savings. Although large-scale dedicated CRF hatching plants are typical, there is a growing need for mobile plants capable of operating anywhere underground. The compact size and rapid hatching speed of high-shear colloidal mixers has allowed them to be incorporated into skid mounted systems capable of producing and discharging cement based slurries onto rockfill aggregate for the production of CRF. In many cases run-of-mine development waste can be used as CRF aggregate with these slurry plants thereby reducing the cost of waste rock removal. These relatively low cost portable plants have now allowed several mines to economically rccmer isolated pillars and realise positive returns on their investment.

The CSIRO ore classification scheme for Pilbara ores was used as a reference frame to target recognisable ore types/textures with potentially elevated phosphorus content for detailed analysis. Particles of each individual ore texture were separated from a Brockman high-P ore and each class was characterised using methods including XRF, XRD, EPMA and synchrotron-based XAS. Results were then correlated with optical microscopy and hand specimen identification to establish any relevant associated mineralogical phases and/or textures. This represents a more systematic approach to identification of high-P ore components based on particle and goethite type and texture. The information can then provide the basis for more targeted P-removal strategies factoring in the relationship between particle/ore texture and phosphorus deportment
