Extensive rockfill cylinder testing was performed to determine the effect that aggregate size, aggregate moisture, Portland cement, fly ash and cement dispersant addition has on compressive strength of a cemented backfill. In this paper ætwo-level factorialÆ and æcentral compositeÆ designs were used to determine the single and interaction effects that each factor have on the overall strength. The results from the designwork indicated that the per cent of aggregate fines had the greatest influence on the compressive strength of the rockfill cylinders. From the factorial design results, a compressive strength estimation equation was derived, which enables the strength to be estimated, given varying input values.

For fully effective information to be obtained from exploratory drilling for coal, drilling programs should be planned systemati- cally in successive stages, on the basis of existing geological criteria and information collated during each stage. In this way, drilling can be executed with optimum economy, aided by auxiliary geophysical techniques wherever these may be appropriate. The object- ives of the programs must ultimately include an adequate assessment of mining conditions as well as thorough evaluation of coal quality. The first of these objectives is not always appreciated by both geologists and mining engineers engaged in supervising drilling pro- grams, often resulting in the need for more additional drilling and more expense than would otherwise be required. To achieve all of these objectives as effectively as possible, the drilling should be supervised by well qualified personnel experienced in working in a multi- dicipline, professional mining, geological and engineering team.

A central aim of rehabilitation is to ensure that disturbed land is returned to a post-mine condition that is safe, stable and self-sustaining. This paper describes initial results from a grazing trial at the New Acland open-cut coal mine in southern Queensland (-27.27 lat, 151.72 long) that aims to assess the sustainability and viability of cattle production from rehabilitated mined land compared to production from surrounding unmined lands (Newsome 2014). The grazing trial was established in 2013 by the Acland Pastoral Company, a subsidiary of New Hope Coal, on lands previously used for dairying, beef and crops before open cut coal mining of the Walloon coal measures began in 2002. The area has a mean annual rainfall of 640 mm. Subsurface fires are a common threat to coal mining, as spontaneous combustion of coal can potentially result in gas combustion and explosion. Fire-proof techniques, such as grouting, foam, or colloid injection, are not in a position to function ideally, due to the limited coverage and stopping the extinguishment substance from reaching the fire location. Liquid nitrogen, as a kind of all-submerged fire prevention or extinguishing method, can rapidly extinguish fires, thus preventing gas explosion and minimising extinguishment time. Injecting liquid nitrogen through boreholes is an important way during the period of mine catastrophe. But liquid nitrogen is not effective enough in infusion; technical issues restrict the development and utilisation of liquid nitrogen fire prevention and extinguishing technology. Immediate infusion of liquid nitrogen is usually associated with ‘air slug’ (the balloons and bubbles in the pipeline which hinder the flow of low-temperature liquid), which blocks pipelines for liquid nitrogen injecting. Another issue is that the pipeline tends to be damaged due to freezing, which undermines the injecting efficiency of liquid nitrogen and its application result. In order to solve the problems of the low efficiency and some other related field issues in liquid nitrogen perfusion, the ground–underground high efficiency liquid nitrogen injection technology were developed. Implementation of liquid nitrogen infusion techniques in Chinese coalmines achieved the goals of fire prevention and air-cooling. The technique presented in this paper is efficient in absorbing heat, and consequently, displacing oxygen and combustible gases. Field tests at Rujigou and Yangchangwan Coalmine justified the efficiency of the technique. By using this technique, there was no waste left behind, which may impede the subsequent production. The presented technique is of great benefit to the social, economic, and environmental aspects of mining operations, and will have broad applications in fire prevention for large-scale coalmines.CITATION:Zhou, F, Shi, B, Li, Y and Ma, L, 2015. I congratulate The Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy on its decision to hold its Annual Conference here in Western Australia. Western Australia, with its abundant mineral and energy resources, plays a key role in the Australian mining industry... and Western Australia will continue to figure prominently in this vital industry for many years to come. The success of our gold, iron ore, bauxite, mineral sands and other primary industries has enabled Western Australia to contribute significantly to Australia's export revenue and, therefore, to the nation's economic strength. The State's mineral wealth has also provided the impetus for a recent surge in mining related activity, including a dramatic increase in downstream processing of our raw materials. Billions of dollars worth of new project investment is either committed or awaiting final approval - and most of this new investment is a direct result of a healthy and vibrant mining industry. The North West Shelf Project - which has been providing natural gas for homes and industry in Western Australia since 1984 - has also played a key role in stimulating industrial development. The availability of abundant, competitively-priced gas from the North West Shelf has - along with the availability of other raw materials - made Western Australia a more attractive proposition for industrial investment. The company I represent, Woodside Offshore Petroleum, is operator of the North West Shelf Project on behalf of the Project's six Joint Venture Participants - Woodside Petroleum Ltd, BHP Petroleum (North West Shelf) Pty Ltd, BP Developments Australia Ltd, Chevron Asiatic Limited, Japan Australia LNG (MIMI) Pty Ltd and Shell Development (Australia) Proprietary Limited. The theme for this Annual Conference: "Excellence - the key to the continued success of the Australasian mining industry" is appropriate to the North West Shelf Project. A trial of an Adept Online Ore Sizer (OOS) was undertaken at the WMC Leinster Nickel Operation (LNO) in the first half of 2000. During this time the On Line Ore Sizer has been shown to be a robust and accurate instrument for measuring mill feed ore size. Data collected during the trial indicates significant variation in the F80 of the SAG mill feed. The effects of feed size on milling parameters such as mill weight, mill power draw and mill efficiency appears to be dependent on the ore blend treated. With some ore blends a weak positive correlation was found between ore size and mill weight and milling efficiency but with others no correlation is evident. It is believed that the OOS will become a vital piece of equipment in the future as LNO continues to optimises its milling circuit.

The Ebor Volcano in northeastern New South Wales is an eroded example of a central-type intraplate volcanic-intrusive complex. It is of Miocene age (19-20 Ma) and has similarities to other central-type volcanoes in eastern Australia which may represent manifestations of sub-lithospheric hotspot activity. Thick lava flows are exposed around the Great Escarpment and are dominated by a tholeiitic basaltic suite, ranging from ol-tholeiite to qz-tholeiite to icelandite with ages of 19.2-19.6 Ma. On its western edge, the tholeiitic lava suite probably overlies remnants of basanite flows belonging to the Eocene (-48 Ma) Doughboy province, but elsewhere, minor alkaline basaltic lavas may be coeval with the tholeiitic suite. Several felsic bodies were emplaced into the volcano at -19.0-19.2 Ma and include subalkaline and peralkaline types. The Crescent Complex is a Miocene-age, strongly differentiated mafic to felsic intrusion in basement rocks and centrally located in pre-erosion reconstructions of the Ebor Volcano. It is interpreted to be a major feeder for the tholeiitic lavas based on age and composition. Evolution of the dominant tholeiitic suite proceeded from a parental ol-tholeiite magma, through qz-tholeiite, icelandite and small volumes of felsic rocks by fractionation of plagioclase, olivine, clinopyroxene and titanomagnetite, accompanied by enrichment of SiO2, F,FeO/MgO, alkalies and HFSE.

Unit cycles in mining have not changed for many years. Productivity increases over the past three decades have mainly been achieved by using larger and heavier machines. This investment in size has probably reached the point of diminishing returns and increased productivity in the future will have to be generated by other means. One way of achieving this is through automation of selected unit operations, eg dragline overburden removal, truck haulage, ground support installation and secondary breakage. Although, in the past few years, there has been significant progress in this direction, we are still a long way away from even partial automation - especially in hard rock mines. This paper addresses the technical obstacles facing mining automation; suggests ways by which these obstacles may be overcome and identifies the role of industry groups and research providers in this process.

THIS note gives comments on the paper by Kitaev et al on p. 68 of this book and compares results with those obtained by ourselves. We wish to say that the authors are to be congratulated on their sophisticated approach to an important problem and that it complements our efforts on flow maldistribution.1-5 It is our view that Eqs. (1)-(5) on p. 69 are impressive, but unfortunately with present day computers and computational facilities, it would be quite impractical to contemplate the numerical solution of these. Eq. (8) in the authors' paper, on p. 70, does provide the logical starting point for tackling flow maldistribution problems and strictly speaking this equation is more accurate than Eq. (1) in our paper in this book. We note in passing that there is direct experimental evidence to support the contention that our Eq. (1) is at least a reasonable approximation and one may question in a practical sense whether the refinement afforded by Eq. (8) in the paper by Kitaev et a/ is justified. While one must readily accept the appropriateness of Eq. (8) of Kitaev et al as a starting point, the subsequent mathematical manipulation by the authors is open to serious criticism. In order to solve this complex, non-linear equation Kitaev et al postulated irrotational flow, which afforded considerable simplification. One can argue simply on physical grounds that the assumption of irrotational flow is inappropriate, a fact which should be readily apparent on inspection of the flow fields shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of Kitaev's paper. It follows that while the starting point through the use of Eq. (8) is correct the results derived from this starting point may be suspect because of the erroneous nature of the irrotational flow assumption.

Continuous, steady-state laboratory flotation tests showed that the recovery of cha1copyrite from a naturally occurring ore, under conditions closely resembling those of plant practice, could be expressed in terms of a first order rate equation.Tests on full-scale plant flotation cells, using impulse tracers, indicated ideal mixing of the pulp in the cells.It was demonstrated that values of first order flotation rate constants can onlv be obtained from conventional methods of analysis in special cases.Analysis of a plant sampling campaign by the author supported a first order kinetic equation for two mineral species, and for the individual size fractions of one of these.The effect of stage-addition of reagents is interpreted in kinetic terms.

Cu-Au porphyry deposits are large tonnage low-grade resources dependent on processing large volumes of material. The ability to understand and predict comminution performance is critical, as it is frequently the rate-limiting step during processing. Parameters required from geometallurgical mapping and modelling of comminution performance are: A×b processing domains based on impact breakage variability, and BMWi processing domains showing grind response variability which lead to Mine throughput domains for a specific comminution circuit configuration. Due to the cost and/or large sample requirements of traditional comminution tests, insufficient data density and distribution of comminution indices commonly exist, making it difficult to model and map deposit scale variability. One method routinely applied to three dimensional domaining is to have an a priori zoning based on geological features (lithology, alteration, mineralogy, textures), and then apply to all material within a given domain the metallurgical values measured on a single sample or average of samples from that domain. The problem with this approach is that commonly the geological domains do not reflect comminution response, therefore compromising the quality of the average domain estimate. To resolve this problem an alternate integrated geometallurgical mapping and modelling method is applied to model and map comminution performance at Cadia East. This paper uses a data set of ~32 000 assay measurements and geological logging information, integrated with ~150 comminution measurements to analyse and develop proxy support models for comminution indices (ie A×b, BMWi, and throughput) based on inherent geological variability. Discrete downhole comminution processing domains are created, mapping orebody response while maintaining inherent variability.

Mining of the zinc, lead and silver deposit at the Broken Hill Southern Operations site has been occurring for over 100 years. As a result of this, a significant amount of high-grade ore is now taken from narrow remnant pillars left between old stopes and zones of previously mined ground. Stopes have been filled with either hydraulic fill (also known as ‘sandfill’), cemented hydraulic fill (cemented sandfill), waste rock backfill or a mixture of these fill types.In the last ten years, there has been considerable success mining through narrow pillars where sandfill is exposed in the development face and/or walls using a ‘shell’ support regime, wherein a layer of bolted mesh is sandwiched between two layers of sprayed fibrecrete (25 mm fibrecrete, then mesh and bolt, followed by a final 50 mm layer of fibrecrete). Shell support is also used in very poor, broken, relaxed ground conditions and in areas filled with cemented fill (sandfill with a minimum four per cent cement content).The next stage of innovation has been to develop a technique for mining through old stope voids filled with uncemented sandfill, known locally as ‘contours’ (old cut-and-fill working), an activity where unconsolidated sandfill can run at the face and from the backs. The challenge is to prevent exposed sandfill in the face and the backs from failing before it can be supported.To achieve this, the Southern Operations mine has implemented a technique in which 6 m long spiling bars are used to strengthen and stabilise the sandfill in front of the face. The hollow steel bars are driven in around the heading perimeter in a closely spaced pattern then pumped full of grout. The bars and the grout stabilise the sandfill in front of the face, preventing it from failing into the drive during excavation and prior to further support being installed.A final support system consisting of shotcrete, mesh, bolts and steel girders is installed as excavation progresses. Both the initial and final support systems are essentially passive support systems designed for a low-stress environment (as the stress originates mostly from the mass of unconsolidated sandfill).This process is slow and labour intensive. Fifteen separate cycles of people/machinery are needed to progress one equivalent heading cut (compared to six for a standard fibrecrete- and bolt pattern-supported rock face heading). This slow pace introduces scheduling challenges, but the process opens up parts of the orebody that were previously uneconomical to mine.CITATION:Carroll, D, 2014. The tangible effects of leakage are presented graphically, and a technique for quantifying the leakage characteristics of a ventilation column using the æSolveÆ capabilities of a common spreadsheet is demonstrated. A case study of a working decline in Western Australia is used to demonstrate the potential for more realistic design of development ventilating systems, and for more cost effective management of the condition of the duct.

In May 1991, AZSA commissioned a new conventional Cell House. This paper focuses on the major improvements introduced in the design and the construction of the equipment, machinery and control. An effective control system together with good reporting and routine operation has resulted in quality control of the Cell House at the highest possible level. Consequently the monthly current efficiency consistently averages above 93 per cent with a total energy usage of 3000 AC kWh/t of cathode zinc. The new concept for the year 2000 and beyond is introduced.

This paper reports the advances made during the development of underground mine fill technology from circa 1960 to the present and, in particular, indicates where increased input from process plant metallurgists û mainly milling, but also smelting û can contribute to further advances. Fill types pertinent to the discussion are partially deslimed, partially dewatered mill tailings fill (uncemented, cemented) and paste fill. Pertinent process plant includes hydrocyclones, thickeners, filters, elutriation tanks, holding tanks, mixing mills, pumps and pipes. Control instrumentation is a critical component of each of the process plant units. The impact of smelter practice on filling is not considered in this paper, except to note that some smelter slags are, or have the potential to be, active pozzolans and when ground to the specific surface area of Portland cement can act as partial Portland cement replacements, a factor of economic and operating significance when Portland cement supply lines are considerable and/or tenuous. The important role of process plant metallurgists has long been recognised, with Thomas, Nantel and Notley (1979) including them as one of the many categories of professionals with contributions to make. With the ever increasing sophistication of mine fill practice and its ever increasing acceptance as an essential component of the mining/ milling/waste disposal process, the scope for contributions by the modern breed of highly educated, specifically trained process plant metallurgists is becoming ever increasingly obvious.

A trend towards mining more complex and economically marginal orebodies, often combined with increasingly tight product specifications, increases the number of variables which need to be considered in production scheduling. Linear programming incorporating integer constraints can be used to create production schedules which are practical as well as mathematically optimum. Factors which can be taken into account include variability in product stockpiles, targets for head or product grades, production of different material types, production from different areas, production targets for loaders, and dependencies between mining blocks. For each schedule an appropriate objective for optimisation must be chosen. Examples of objectives are: to minimise or maximise grade variation; to minimise waste movement; and to minimise movement by front end loaders. A staged approach to the implementation of computer systems based on linear programming optimisation is Proposed.
