There is an increasing need for reliable and comparable coal resource data and it is necessary to standardize the traditional classification procedures by quantifying the three basic evaluation criteria of economic feasibility, geologic assurance and recovery. For well documented deposits, geostatistical methods can consider- ably improve classification quality. A geostatistically based algorithm for classifying coal resources within the current Queensland and New South Wales codes has been developed. Application of the method in classifying resources from a number of seams exhibiting different structural characteristics is assessed. The method is found to give classification results which closely reflect the error associated with an estimate of resource quantities based on current sampling densi- ties. It requires a careful geostatistical analysis with emphasis on geological awareness. Resource category restrictions must be arbi- trarily assigned and remain constant for all deposits being compared. Engineering judgement is needed and interpretation may be required with isolated and peripheral blocks.

High-nugget effect vein-gold systems are generally considered to be one of the most challenging of deposit types to evaluate and exploit. To potential investors and mining companies, they are viewed as high risk because of the associated uncertainties in the grade estimate and general paucity of Ore Reserves at production start-up. However, despite the well-known risks, these deposits often have a grade upside that makes them potentially attractive. The reporting of resource grade is of importance and perhaps even more so is the reporting of the associated uncertainty attached to the grade estimate. The use of the grade estimate supported by a grade range is recommended to achieve more complete and useful disclosure. The definition of the grade range can be somewhat subjective, ranging from opinion based estimates through to data-based estimates and geostatistical conditional simulation. Whichever method used, the over-riding issue must be the provision of enough data of appropriate quality and full disclosure to the public of relevant uncertainties.CITATION:Dominy, S C and Edgar, W B, 2012. Structural mapping of pit walls can be performed using digital images and photogrammetry software, but the performance is limited by weather and environmental conditions including dust, rain and light. On the other hand, active sensors such as terrestrial laser scanners (TLS) and total stations (TS) suffer from vertical orientation bias and occlusions when persistent discontinuities dip at the same angle as the scanner line-ofsight. The recent development of the compact light detection and ranging (LiDAR) systems has made it possible to mount these sensors on unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) or drones which offer the potential to overcome limitations that are inherent in existing mapping systems. This study details the research involving integration and application of an advanced UAV-LiDAR system for structural mapping of a highwall. A state-of-the art laser scanner with an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and real-time kinematic global positioning system (GPS) was integrated on to a UAV. The system was first tested in a laboratory condition. Then the UAV-LiDAR system was employed to map a highwall of a coal mine. The planned flight trajectories tested the system at variable distances from the highwall face and at various speeds. The raw data collected from individual sensors were fused, filtered to remove noise, and segmented to produce a surface scan model. Finally, the point density and surface coverage were measured using the surface scan model of the highwall. The parameters were compared with equivalent measurements computed from a reference TLS data. The study demonstrates the capabilities of a UAV-LiDAR system to generate accurate and occlusion free data for mapping highwall geological structure with very quick and efficient flights in the field. The Kainantu area lies within the composite Scrapland terrane which is composed of Mesozoic metamorphic and intrusive units, overlain by Cenozoic marine sediments, volcanic and intrus-ive units and Quaternary fluvial sedi-ments.Four deformations (Dl, D2, D3, D4) are recognised within the Mesozoic sequences, which consist of greenschist to amphibolite facies schist derived from felsic to intermediate pyroclastic rocks and pelitic sediments. The second, third and fourth fold events are present in the Cenozoic sequence, and these rocks are broken by thrusts related to northwest trending D3 folds. South-dipping, possibly lystric, normal faults are recognised and may be related to uplift and exposure of the metamorphic rocks as core complexes.Known mineralisation in the area consists of gold and copper skarn deposits, porphyry copper deposits, shear-hosted gold deposits, epithermal vein deposits and gold placer deposits. Over 35 hard rock and 18 gold placer deposits are known within the area. Of significance are the Kathnell shear-hosted auriferous quartz veins; such structurally controlled veins may be more widespread than proposed prev-iously and offer a new exploration target.

Basic Oxygen Steelmaking (B.O.S.) commenced in Australia in December, 1962. Two 200-ton furnaces were installed initially at Newcastle with a 50-ton furnace coupled to a continuous casting machine added in 1967. In 1965, two 100-ton furnaces were installed at Whyalla plant and two 225-ton furnaces are nearing com- pletion at Port Kembla to commence oper- ations in 1972. Plant layouts in each centre differ due to changing circumstance and increasing knowledge of the B.O.S. process since 1962. Raw materials are a most important factor for good operation of the process. Most materials come from within Australia but some are imported. General operating practices are similar in each plant, although treatment of fume at Port Kembla will be by the OG (Oxygen Converter Gas Recovery) Process as against electrostatic precipitators in Newcastle and Whyalla. Special alloy steels as well as plain carbon steels can be made by the B.O.S. process. Production potential of the process in Australia has yet to be fully utilised with 45 per cent of steel production coming from B.O.S. In 1971.

The Porgera Gold Mine, west of Mt Hagen in PNG is a large open pit and underground operation currently producing gold at the rate of almost one million ounces per year. This deposit has produced some 8.8 million ounces to-date and has current reserves of 103.4 million tonnes @3.2 g/t Au. The Porgera Joint Venture has invested over $A1 billion in infrastructure in this project. Technical management of this operation involves the interrogation of some 700 000 metres of diamond drilling, some 50 000 blastholes per year, and very large volumes of laboratory, geotechnical, environmental and production reporting data. Over the past seven years this data has been consolidated into a single centralised, relational database which now acts as the single reference point for all the technical application systems used for surveying, grade control, production reporting, deposit evaluation and modelling. Data transfer to application programs and management systems is controlled by the centralised database, this process at times involving a two-way, real-time, binary data transfer. The benefits of a specialised database application include security and integrity of the data asset, ease of access, and performance in a multi-user environment. This replaced fragmented, inconsistent data sets stored inefficiently as individual, unindexed, variably formatted files associated with the different application programs. Most importantly, the database has allowed mine management at all levels to make timely, confident investment, cash flow and optimisation decisions as it provides the primary link between the deposit and operational data sets on one hand, and the application programs and management and performance measurement systems on the other. This paper discusses the economic value and importance of technical data in terms of the resource asset and the means by which this data is being managed and used at Porgera.

The integration of environmental and permitting strategies into development has become a routine part of doing business for the international minerals industry. Paralleling the development schedule with the environmental and permitting schedule is critical to ensuring that design recognises environmental constraints and that the environmental and permitting program has the right focus and achieves the objective of obtaining workable permits that reflect the project design. Regulatory issues including the law of and controls established by the country the project is situated in, the requirements of international financing institutions, international politics and the role of environmental groups and the particular precedents and processes established are all important issues that must be recognised and incorporated into the permitting program by the developer. Technical issues including collecting early environmental data during exploration, establishing hydro-meteorology equipment, baseline data gathering, and getting good environmental engineering information as a part of feasibility and design are also critical issues to the success of a project which are under the direct control of the developer. Finally tying all of these issues into a single integrated strategy under the direction and control of a nominated team is necessary to maintain focus and achieve results.

Enhance Fine Particle Flotation by Hydrodynamic Cavitation Difficulties in fine particle flotation are well documented. Microbubble flotation has been found to greatly improve the recovery of fine particles and in situ gas nucleation by hydrodynamic cavitation incorporated in the design of modern flotation machines has shown great performance in fine particle flotation and potentially in coarse particle flotation. In this presentation, we will provide an overview on gas nucleation by hydrodynamic cavitation and its role in fine particle flotation with focus on the progress made in our research laboratory. Hydrodynamic cavitation was achieved and the critical role of dissolved gases in the liquid was elucidated by visualisation in a high intensity agitation cell. The in situ gas nucleation on fine particles by hydrodynamic cavitation was identified by zeta potential distribution measurement in model systems. Gas nucleation by hydrodynamic cativation was found to effectively aggregate hydrophobised fine particles thereby leading to enhanced flotation kinetics. This is an abstract only. No full paper was prepared for this presentation.

The acidic and metal rich waters that are generated from acid sulfate soil (ASS) drainage can have damaging impacts upon ecosystems. The most obvious impact has been the discolouration of water and occasional fish kills. ASSÆs produce these acidic and metal rich waters when pyrite in soil is oxidised. Land management techniques are an essential long-term requirement to minimise the amount of pyrite oxidation. Acidic water that cannot be prevented through land management can be neutralised by other techniques. Powdered lime is the most common material in agriculture that is applied directly to soils and waters. Powdered lime can be expensive and if applied dry it may aggregate. Since the aggregated particles of lime are larger they could sink rapidly in the water column and not react. In waters with high concentrations of dissolved iron and aluminium the lime particles may become coated with a metal oxy-hydroxide precipitate, which will decrease its reactivity. A unique lime-dispensing machine, the Waterways Lime Spreader, has been developed to neutralise acidic waterways. The Waterways Lime Spreader can produce a solution rich in fine lime from larger limestone fragments. The current size of the machine means only 3.5 grams per second of limestone can be emitted. This output will neutralise low acidity waters, however, for high acidity waters the time for neutralisation can be long. More reactive chemicals such as hydrated lime or increasing the size of the machine will reduce this neutralisation time. The Waterways Lime Spreader is also capable of producing slurry mixtures if powdered materials are required. Trials with the Waterways Lime Spreader were undertaken in part of the Clothiers Creek catchment located in northeast NSW, Australia. A small drain with a water volume of 4 m3 was neutralised with crushed limestone to pH 6.9 from an initial pH of 2.6 and an acidity of 902 mg/L CaCO3 in 160 minutes. In comparison a drain with a slightly larger volume of 6 m3 that had an initial pH of 3.2 and an acidity of 753 mg/L CaCO3 was neutralised with hydrated lime to pH 11.8 in five minutes. The Waterways Lime Spreader has been used successfully to neutralise water from acid sulfate soils. It is expected that future applications of the machine may be for the neutralisation of acid rock drainage or acidified lakes.

Quantitative probabilistic ecological risk assessment has been used to evaluate the likely effect on fish diversity and abundance of filtered and bioavailable metals in streamwater affected by acid drainage from the abandoned and remediated Rum Jungle U/Cu mine in the Northern Territory of Australia. The water quality was determined using monitoring data from a gauging station on the East Branch of the Finniss River, downstream of the mine site, and modelled assuming a number of potential water quality management options. The management options ranged from no action, through some flushing options to full catch and treatment of contaminated seepage from the waste rock heaps. The computer code AQUARISK was used to undertake the analyses. Critical criteria for contaminant water concentrations at the site, derived from probability density functions of available fish ecotoxicology data, were found to closely approximate the regulatory trigger values for the contaminants of concern. Modelled predictions of reduced diversity and abundance were also in good agreement with in situ biodiversity measures. Based on a reasonable target of 67 per cent species tolerance for this heavy impacted site, it was found that none of the low cost options for wastewater management was acceptable. Combinations of two of the options approached acceptability. Both of the catch and treat options exceeded the arbitrary acceptability target well. This implied that the more expensive option of liming to pH 10 might be unnecessary at this site. Thus, the use of ecological risk assessment modelling has proven useful in undertaking cost-benefit analyses for this site. The approach provides a management decision-making tool that can be economically used to link expensive on-site environmental engineering options with site-specific ecological goals rather than the previous nebulous aims of æreduced contaminant loadÆ or æimproved biodiversityÆ that often resulted in excessive expenditure without achieving successful environmental benefit.

High-water rapid-solidifying material, called 'high-water material', is a new material developed by the authors over many years. The material can solidify nine times its volume of water into solid. The material is a fine kind of binder with special properties. The solidifying body of high-water material with water has quite a high early strength. The compressive strength of the material within three days can reach the same strength as conventional Portland in 28 days. One ton of the material can replace three tons of conventional Portland cement as binder. Some important achievements have been made in application of high-water material. In metal mines, based on the material, a new full-tailing cemented backfill technology has been developed. The characteristic of the new technology is that high-water material is used as binder and full tailing or alluvial sand is used as backfill aggregate. Because of the application of the new technology, major technical problems in backfill technology such as classifying of tailing, dewatering, transportation of pulp, low strength of hackfill body. environmental contamination and so on, have been solved.

Coeur d'Alene Mines is a precious metals producer which is dedi- cated to growth through it's exploration and acquisitions efforts. We foster and support these activities by providing our staff with long-term financial support, the encouragement to proceed with their projects and ideas, and a firm belief that we will be successful. Coeur's corporate headquarters are located in beautiful, historic Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Our main mining operations are Rochester, locate near Lovelock, Nevada, Coeur Mine,located near Wallace, Idaho, and Thunder Mountain, located in central Idaho. Our Ken- sington Gold project is located about 45 miles north of Juneau in southeast Alaska. We have exploration offices located in Reno, Nevada, and Santiago, Chile. At this time, Coeurd'Alene Mines produces precious metals from mines located in the United States. Our Rochester open-pit opera- tion, which is 100 per cent owned and operated, is located in Nevada. Presently, this operation produces 5.5 to 6 million ounces of silver per year and 60-70,000 ounces of gold. We move 65,000 to 70,000 tons of rock per day of which about 23,000 tons is ore. The ore is crushed, stacked on permanent heaps and leached. The recovery is by Merrill-Crowe. Although the average grade is rela- tively low, 1.4 ounces per ton silver and 0.012 ounces per ton Au, the operation is very low cost. Our cost of production is less than $4.00 per silver equivalent ounce. Rochester is anunusual operation in that the crushed rock stacks without much compaction and the ores are easily leached. The final height on our heaps will be about 220', and overall recovery will be about 55 per cent of the silver and about 85 per cent of the gold. Reserves at Rochester are expanding and are now adequate for at least fifteen years of opera- Tion.

The determinants of human behaviour are numerous and complex. Many scientific disci- plines focus on various processes which play some part in shaping the actions of individ- uals and groups. Behavioural science attempts to synthesise data produced by these investigations in an attempt to formulate principles by which people's thoughts, feelings and actions may be described, diagnosed, predicted and changed. While no comprehensive account of people and their reactions can be attempted in a brief paper a review of six principles does provide a framework within which managers can establish reliable knowledge applicable to all their subordinates and to themselves. This information may be used to arrange organizational environments and management practices which enable people to discover, release and increase their best intellectual, emotional and motivational capacities.

High chrome grinding media has been used in the mining industry for quite some time, as it often proves economical on a wear basis. However, it is unusual for an operation to change to high chrome solely due to its metallurgical benefits. KagaraÆs Mount Garnet operation made the change from forged steel to high chrome media after laboratory testwork indicated that copper grades and recoveries would improve. The outcome was remarkable with positive changes in pulp chemistry throughout the circuit accompanied by marked improvements in copper, lead and zinc grades and recoveries. Reagent dosage rates were reduced, often by more than half, and the grinding media wear rate dropped to less than a third of the wear rate of the forged steel media. The economic analysis showed that out of the total increase of revenue and savings from metallurgical improvements and reagent and media consumption reductions the metallurgical improvements made up approximately 73 per cent, the reduced reagents saved 25 per cent and the savings through reduced media wear contributing by just over one per cent. This indicates that the popular view of high chrome media only being trialled in the plant for wear economics is outdated and the focus of operations should be shifted to using high chrome media for the metallurgical benefits.

In the continuous casting of ultralow carbon (ULC) steels, free carbon is used to control the melting behaviour of mould powders. If the carbon is not completely removed during melting, it is enriched at the top of the slag pool. Liquid steel may come into contact with this layer because of the turbulence of the molten metal, resulting in its recarburisation, which negatively affects the desired product quality. Thus, a reduction in carbon input is desirable. For this purpose, SiC and/or Si3N4 with and without antioxidants were selected as melt-control additives to replace carbon in the mould powders. Thermodynamic calculations were performed to quantify their effect on the melting behaviour based on the chemical composition of a flux already applied to ULC steels. To experimentally assess the liquefaction behaviour, laboratory mould powders were prepared and annealed in steel crucibles closed with a lid. Crucibles were inserted into a furnace that was already preheated to selected temperatures between 900–1200°C for 10 mins and quenched to room temperature. Subsequently, the samples were mineralogically investigated. The results confirmed those obtained from the thermodynamic calculations. Si3N4, and SiC in particular, are suitable raw materials for delaying the solid-solid reactions of raw material components during melting. Owing to their stability at high temperatures, the necessary SiO2 content to form a liquid phase is not available, resulting in lower amounts of the liquid phase. The addition of antioxidants to delay the oxidation of SiC further reduces this positive effect. Attempts to decrease the SiC content without negatively affecting the melting behaviour resulted in a reduction in the CO2 emission by at least 27 g CO2/kg of mould powder when compared to the carbon-containing standard mould powder. These investigations revealed differences in the melting behaviours of granules and loose powders, which are related to their respective production processes.

The methods employed in dressing 'the tin ore up to the required percentage of purity depend mainly on the type of ore crushed.These may be briefly divided into two distinct classes-viz., q, free: milling ore and a complex milling ore. In the former the ore is practically free from the common metallic sulphides, such as pyrites, mispickel, blende, galena, etc., and 1!' clean concentrate of 70 per cent metallic tin can be directly obtained in one continuous act of concentration; in the latter, however, in order to get a good extraction, it is only advisable to primarily concentrate up to 30 to 40 per cent. tin oxide, the rest being the sulphides of the metals. This concentrate is then roasted, re-ground, and re-concentrated up to 70 per cent. metallic tin on a separate set of tables.In the complex milling ore the tin is intermixed very closely with the sulphides, so that it becomes necessary to collect all the mineral present in order to obtain clean tailings. Stamp mills are the most popular machines for the primary crushing in the district, but whether they are invariably the best for the purpose is rather an open question. No doubt for some of the very tough chloritic ores they are the most efficient, but for a brittle quartzose ore, such as the free milling proposition usually is, the writer thinks Oornish rolls would well hold their own, especially when the tin occurs coarse, as is so often the case with this class of ore. This paper examines the complex interplay of deposit characteristics, mining plans, tailings disposal techniques and rehabilitation requirements on planning for mineral sands operations. All component parts of this mining cycle are interdependent and cannot be evaluated in isolation when optimising a mineral sands operation. This is most evident when projects are large-scale or involve resources that contain complexities such as high slimes content, consolidated hard band materials, acid forming materials and radioactive materials. Projects located in environmentally sensitive areas add further to the need for more stringent planning. This paper describes the analysis techniques adopted by Hatch to evaluate mining and tailings placement options for a dredging and floating concentrator system. The principles and methods used in the analysis are applicable to any mining system involving the complexities listed above. The focus of this paper is on the reconstitution of mined material as tailings and the impact of this process on mining schedules and tailings construction and placement options.

The flowability of the caved rock masses in the sublevel caving (SLC) mining method is of great importance. During the blasting process of a SLC-ring, the caved rock mass in front of the ring is compacted. As a result of this compaction, the mechanical properties of the fractured rock masses change, for example void ratio, angle of internal friction and structure of the compacted material. The changed mechanical properties of caved rock mass and recent blasted material can influence the mobility of the material, which could result in blockage of the flow path of the material. The identification of the involved mechanisms in this process can be done after a series of tests in different scales. However, there is no available equipment for dynamic measurements during blasting, ie velocity and displacement of the burden and in the caved masses. This study focuses on the development and laboratory evaluation of a measuring system that can be installed in a borehole. The first trial was carried out in a pillar, where two blastholes had been drilled (9.5 m) parallel with the drift and two measuring holes (16.5 m) were perpendicular to the drift. Two measuring systems were installed in the measuring holes. Some preliminary tests were carried out to find suitable initiation procedures for the emulsion explosive. Applicability and robustness of the developed measuring system were also evaluated. In addition to these tests, an expandable cement mixture was developed to firmly anchor the measuring systems in the boreholes. The measuring system consists of an anchor, armoured cable in a pulling tube and a protective case. The anchor is equipped with uniaxial and triaxial accelerometers. A potentiometric measuring system for displacement up to 2 m is installed at the end of the pulling tube and connected to an extendable spiral cable. All sensors are connected to a data acquisition system (DAS). Both measuring systems have their own DAS to acquire data in case of failure of one of the systems. The measuring system was tested in laboratory conditions with impact velocity up to 10 m/s. The development of a softwood alternative to the hardwood chockpiece used to build the waste-edge breakers commonly incorporated in gateroad packs is described. The results of laboratory tests on softwood prototypes and two underground trials are presented. The results of the last trial suggest that a viable alternative chockpiece has been designed, offering advantages over availability of wood, weight and given reduced wood content, price.
