Some important mineral fields are referred to in discussing the formation of placer deposits in Australia.Testing methods include boring by hand, with percussion rigs, with auger and pit digging drills, and by vibro drilling.Sampling errors are minimized by the use of correct techniques and equipment for boring, sampling and sample dressing. A hypothetical set of data is used to demonstrate the final process of evaluation, and somerelevant taxation provisions are discussed.

Environmental incidents involving mine tailings and waste rock inevitably become highly publicised and serve to damage the credibility of the entire industry. The recent serious incident involving a spill from a Romanian mine, was blamed for triggering æone of the worst environmental catastrophes in Eastern EuropeÆ. It is important to clearly demonstrate to the general public that these incidents are not representative of the industry as a whole. Where such incidents have occurred, the causes are generally related to poor design and/or construction, inadequate supervision and/or monitoring and maintenance, lack of independent expertise, inadequate risk identification and treatment and no provision to ensure that rehabilitation and long term management of the site occurs. Many people are unaware that these issues have been considered and provided for at the Martha Mine. Despite the fact that the first tailings storage facility has performed very well over fifteen years of operation, the long term safety and security of the tailings storage facilities continues to be questioned and debated by the public. The best way to address this is to provide quality information to enable a better understanding amongst the general public.

"In the civil tunnelling field, the use of tunnel boring machines (TBM) has now overtaken the use of conventional excavation methods (drill and blast / roadheader). This is due to a number of reasons, including the increasing availability and reliability of TBMs, the ability to deal with a wider range of face conditions, and the reduced excavation cost that TBMs can bring.Mining companies have spearheaded the advances in shaft boring by mechanised means, both in blind and raise boring. However, mining companies have been slower to adopt mechanised tunnelling.When contrasted with a conventional mining contract, there are good reasons why TBMs in mining applications are relatively rare. A conventional decline contract may have very little geotechnical information. The decline alignment can be subject to change as the tunnelling progresses. The infrastructure requirements are less for a conventional decline, and the sunk cost prior to excavation commencing is lower. Contract documents can be very simple.The history of TBM use in mining is reviewed and lessons are described. From the case histories and lessons learnt, the paper identifies ways that mining companies can maximise the potential benefit of TBM technology.We believe that despite the additional requirements for TBM declines, the cost and time advantage to mining companies is very attractive. This paper contains an account of some creep tests on electrolytic lead and some of its alloys. The stresses used in determining creep were 500, 350, and 200 lb. per sq.' in. The alloys contained silver, bismuth, tellurium, antimony and zinc respectively. All were castin vacuo, and tested "as rolled." Tests were done also on electrolytic lead which had been cast in air.The electrolytic lead contained 0.0005% total impurities.The preparation and vacuum casting of this lead have been described in a previous paper in this series. The preparation of the alloys, and the air casting of the electrolytic lead, are described in the next section.EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE.Every effort was made to keep the vacuum-cast specimens from contact with the atmosphere throughout their history.The ingots were stored eIther in a vacuum desiccator or immersed in heavy oil. The creep specimens were coated with vaseline except during rolling, etching and photography, which involved exposure to the atmosphere for about 45 minutes all told.It is not claimed that vaseline is a perfect shield against the intrusion of atmospheric gases. A current trend amongst producers is the increase in dewatering of iron ore fines (<0.5 mm), due to an increase in wet beneficiation processes used to upgrade lower quality ore deposits, increased water content in orebodies located below the water table, and increasing focus on transportable moisture limits (TML). Vacuum filtration is commonly used for dewatering of iron ore fines, and as with all filtration processes performance decreases with particle size. Significant improvements are possible with the use of filter aids, usually anionic surfactants and flocculants. Anionic surfactants reduce the surface tension of the associated water, which is then removed more readily leading to improved filtercake moistures. Anionic flocculants used correctly can improve cake permeability, in turn, decreasing cake formation times and increasing filtration rates. In addition to increased throughput, savings and benefits for producers can include: moisture limit penalties, improved handleability, along with energy and water savings.The effect of filter aids on two iron ore fines samples from the Pilbara region were evaluated using a lab scale vacuum filtration unit. The first sample showed a reduction in the filtercake moisture content by 2.3 per cent weight/weight (w/w) with the use of BASF’s Drimax® 1234. For the second sample a reduction in the filtercake moisture of 3.4 per cent w/w along with an increase in filtration rate of 20 per cent was achieved by using a combination of Magnafloc® 5250 and Drimax® 1239 NF, as both filter throughput and cake moisture were considered important by site.CITATION:Haskell, T, Dickie, S and Joe, Y, 2017. The Brukunga pyrite mine was operated from 1955 to 1972 to supply feedstock for sulfuric acid production in the South Australian fertilizer industry. Iron sulfide ore, mined by Nairne Pyrite Ltd, was finely crushed and concentrated onsite with the concentrates being sent by road and rail to Port Adelaide for roasting. Waste rock was dumped at two locations on the western side of Dawesley Creek and the tailings pumped to a valley-fill storage facility on the eastern side. Production of 1.5 Mt concentrate resulted in 3.5 Mt tailings and 8 Mt waste rock. The site has been administered by the South Australian Government since August 1977 and a lime treatment plant has been operated on the site since September 1980. Environmental issues arising from these operations included: diversion of Dawesley Creek to accommodate the waste rock dumps; dumping of low-grade sulfidic ore in waste rock dumps at the angle of repose immediately adjacent to Dawesley Creek; exposed fresh sulfide mineralisation in the quarry floor; tailings storage facility dam wall constructed by upstream up-lift using tailings and waste rock; an acid water pond sited on the tailings; and pollution of natural drainage. As a result, the minesite rapidly became a source of acid drainage and potential contaminants (sulfate, Al, Fe, Mn, Cd, Zn, and Ni). Various Government bodies have been responsible for considerable effort and expenditure in reducing the flow of acid seepage and contaminants into Dawesley Creek. Presently an estimated 60 per cent of seepage from the waste rock dumps, tailings storage facility and quarry is collected and neutralised prior to discharge into the creek. Tailings have been covered with waste rock, biosolids, neutralisation sludge and soil and planted with grasses, shrubs and trees to reduce rainfall infiltration. Monitoring of water flows, water quality and riparian ecosystems is on-going. Consultants have been engaged to develop cost-effective remediation techniques and a five-member Brukunga Mine Site Remediation Board was appointed to oversee remediation of the site and liaise with the community. Construction has commenced on the diversion of Dawesley Creek, and plans are being developed for the relocation of waste rock back to the quarry benches and upgrading of the neutralisation plant. The paper examines operations, environmental monitoring, remediation, research and community involvement with respect to current best practice.

Geometallurgy is a tool that, for more than a century, has been present in the implicit operations of mineral beneficiation. There’s a need to understand the characteristics of the material to be processed. This has led metallurgists to ask geologists what type of rock and mineralogy is entering the Beneficiation Plant and vice versa. The geologist needs to understand the beneficiation process in order to be able to carry out the production programming. The paradigm is whether geometallurgy can be applied to small-scale mining or if it is only aimed at large companies that invest millions of dollars to conduct studies. With this work, we provide an example of how geometallurgy can help improve the processes of a small mining company located in Ecuador (South America). We performed characterizations of geological and mineralogical and metallurgical tests in universities and the National Research Institute of Geological Metallurgical Mining. The origin of the theme is based on the fact that gold has been detected in the final tailings. The flotation concentrates meet the standards in terms of the content of economically profitable metals, but this isn’t the case with regards to the percentage of arsenic, which has hindered sales. The hypothesis is: conducting technical and scientific research will optimize the metallurgical process for the recovery of gold and concentrates. The referential framework is the mining geology of the Bella Rica District, current status of the Beneficiation Plant. In the theoretical framework there are parameters of the veins, comminution operations, gravimetric concentration, flotation, and cyanidation. The methodological framework contemplates the characterization of the gold ore, the chemical, mineralogical, textural, metallurgical analysis and the interpretation of the results. Thus, the design of a geometallurgy model of the deposit, with its main characteristics, is a conclusion that serves as a basis for the proposal of the optimization of the metallurgical process.CITATION:Lozada, D and Salazar, A, 2018. When xanthates or dithiophosphates are used as collectors in sulphide ore flotation, adsorbed species may be identified by gas chromatography of the volatile products formed during low temperature pyrolysis. For collector additions ,as low as 20 g/tonne of ore, pyrolysis of the flotation products usually gives' an olefin directly related to the particular xanthate or Aerofloat reagent used. The method is able to provide valuable qualitative and quantitative data relating to the extent of collector adsorption and the resulting changes in the hydrophilic or hydrophobic nature of the mineral surface.

The Rise and Shine Shear Zone is a mineralised low angle deformation zone traceable for at least 7 km through biotite zone schist of the Dunstan Range, central Otago. Rocks from the shear zone obtained from recent drillholes are unweathered and facilitate paragenetic studies. There is a progression of mineral deposition from semiductile foliation-parallel shearing, to subsequent folding, and brittle fracturing. Sheared rocks are dominated by microshears containing fine grained hydrothermal muscovite and rutile that has recrystallised from metamorphic muscovite and titanite respectively. Euhedral pyrite occurs within segregations in the schist and is locally brecciated by the shears.   Arsenopyrite occurs within microshears and is intergrown with hyrothermal muscovite. Fractures within relatively undeformed schist are filled with ankerite, siderite, chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena and these veinlets also crosscut the microshears. Locally the schist is folded and zones of brecciation, silicification and vein deposition overprint the rock. Vein quartz and albite predominate and arsenopyrite and gold infill breccia matrix and crosscutting veinlets. Sulphide deposition began in the later stages of metamorphism with pyrite deposited in quartz-albite segregations. Subsequent shearing caused brecciation of some grains and accompanied deposition of arsenopyrite ¦ gold and rare sulphides along foliation-parallel microshears. Minor amounts of chalcopyrite, sphalerite and galena were then remobilised in ankerite veins that crosscut the shears. In areas of high strain, arsenopyrite was then deposited as euhedral grains in veins and breccias. Synmineralisation deformation caused the brecciation of some grains and gold was deposited infilling fractures in the arsenopyrite. The paragenetic sequence shows gold mineralisation occurred in two distinct sets of structures (semiductile and brittle) that formed at different times in the formation of the shear zone.

Ammonium nitrate-fuel oil (ANFO) explosives are unstable in hot, reactive sulphide-rich ground at Mount Isa. Under certain conditions associated with background heat, moisture, and chemical impurities from natural oxidation, ANFO composites in contact with hot ground disproportionate and the ammonium nitrate can undergo rapid exothermic reactions with sulphide.Reactions can occur in confined charges from prolonged contact with reactive sulphides, or by contamination with sulphide in loading. Partial interaction can result in misfires or premature detonation. Spilt, scattered and unpropagated explosive will undergo further reaction in sulphide-rich environments. ANFO-sulphide interaction is invariably exothermic and causes an irreversible chemical transformation of the ore.The heat generated during reaction may be dissipated, heating the environment, or rapidly accumulated to yield hot spots or areas in excess of 400°C. These can result in forced ignition of bulk sulphide and sustained combustion.Thermal analysis was used to define the critical conditions for ANFO-sulphide interaction and sulphide combustion.The occurrence of incandescent ore is attributed to the thermal interaction between exothermic hydrolysis oxidation, ANFO-sulphide, and combustion processes.Chemical agents and control methods have been developed to prevent ANFO-induced oxidation and combustion.

The Precambrian Eastern Creek Volcanics comprises spilitic basalts with interbedded sediments and tuffs which were extruded and deposited during Middle Proterozoic time. The rocks have undergone low-grade regional metamorphism.The Eastern Creek Volcanics are approximately 17,000 ft thick and have been divided into four units.The rocks were laid down in a geosynclinal basin elongate to the north. The main structural features are the northerly trending Mount Isa and Gorge Creek-Quilalar fault systems.Major east-west faults cause repetition of the sequence.Copper and uranium mineralization is known within the formation. Copper mineralization is confined to quartz-filled shears anp basalts. Nothing of economic importance has been found in the area though ore deposits have been found elsewhere in this type of environment.

Gold-bearing veins have formed at a wide range of depths throughout the uplift history of the Otago Schist. The earliest gold mineralisation occurred during the later stages of Mesozoic metamorphism. This mineralisation was characterised by diffuse wall rock alteration with greenschist facies metamorphic or retrograde metamorphic mineral assemblages, and gold occurs in this altered rock. Quartz veins formed in .steeply dipping extensional fractures associated with this mineralisation type strike north to northeast. The Macraes mine exploits this deposit type. The present northwest strike of the mineralised zone at Macraes is a result of post-mineralisation deformation of the schistosity-parallel mineralised shear zone which hosts northeast striking extensional veins. This combination of schistosity-parallel shear zone and steeply dipping northeast striking veins may exist elsewhere in Otago, and this deposit type is most prospective. Steeply dipping quartz veins formed during post-metamorphic un-roofing of the Otago Schist strike northwest to west and occur as clusters of near-parallel structures in east and central Otago. These veins consist mainly of massive quartz, although some prismatic quartz occurs also. Breccia fragments in veins are common and these are generally silicified, with some gold. Wall rock alteration is negligible, and vein margins are sharp. A set of middle Tertiary veins occurs in northwest Otago. Most of these also strike northwest and dip steeply, but some strike northeast. These veins contain abundant ankeritic carbonate as well as quartz. The carbonate pervades adjacent wall rock as veinlets, but gold mineralisation is confined to veins. Quartz is commonly prismatic and vuggy, and contains gold, which is commonly coarse grained especially in silicified breccia zones. Associated veins contain stibnite. This vein type formed close to the paleosurface (>2 km). Mineralised veins in Marlborough currently strike northwest, but these have been rotated from northeast strike during Alpine Fault displacement of Marlborough from Otago. Some of these veins were formed under late metamorphic conditions and are similar to the north to northeast striking veins in Otago. As in Otago, this type should be considered to be most prospective if they have associated schistosity-parallel shears.

Silver is one of the three major metals produced from the Broken Hill mines. The accurate determination of the silver in these ores, therefore, is of economic importance.With due appreciation of the divergence of opinion of many who are interested in the subject of the determination of silver, the writer has been prompted to present the results of some recent experiments on silver losses during cupellation and conclusions from these experiments in the present paper. The losses of silver in the fire assay for this metal are due to silver retained in the slag during the fusion or scorification of the ore, and to silver volatilized from, and absorbed by the cupel during the process of cupellation.The literature describing the results of experimental work on silver losses due to the above causes is extensive, and the general conclusion of these experiments is that the silver lost in the slag is small, but that lost by cupellation is larger and more variable.The term cupellation loss in this paper refers to the total cupellation loss, no distinction being made between the absorption and volatilization losses.Volatilization loss is shown by King to be 0.5% of the total cupellation loss and, as it is generally accepted among assayers as being only a small fraction of the cupellation loss (3) (5), it will not receive further consideration in this paper.The factors causing the loss of silver by cupellation and the precautions to be obs~rved to reduce the loss in this operation are described in (1), (2), (3), (4) and (5). Tertiary volcanic rocks make up a significant proportion of the surficial cover rocks of New Zealand, especially in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. Industrial minerals that are associated with or derived from the volcanic rocks include: amorphous silica, allophane, bentonite, diatomite, ignimbrite building stone, illite clays, halloysite clay, obsidian, perlite, pumice, sulphur, titanomagnetite ironsand and zeolite. Of these: bentonite, ignimbrite building stone, perlite, pumice and titanomagnetite ironsand have been mined and processed for 20 to 30 years, but many of the others require further characterisation of the resource and/or development of markets.   We have compiled interim mineral deposit models for halloysite clays in rhyolite and for zeolites in altered vitric tuffs. These models include geological and mineralogical attributes, which are linked to the underlying volcanic and geothermal processes that have produced the minerals and their source volcanic rocks. Halloysite clay deposits at Matauri Bay (Northland) have formed from hydrothermal alteration and weathering of rhyolite. Clinoptilolite + mordenite zeolite deposits in the Ngakuru area (Rotorua district) have formed from hydrothermal alteration of volcanic glass in lacustrine sediments and ignimbrite. Further refinement and application of these models will result in a better understanding of the mineralogy, localisation and origin of the deposits, with consequent applications in exploration and resource assessments.

The growing popularity of platinum and platinum group metals (or PGMs, including palladium, rhodium and others) for a wide range of applications leads to some interesting issues for mining and sustainability. The uses for PGMs includes catalytic converters for air pollution control in vehicles, growing jewellery use, catalysts for various purposes (especially petroleum and chemicals processing), hydrogen fuel cells and many others. Given the growing importance of most of these PGM uses in more sustainable technologies or in making industrial processes more efficient, it is critical to understand the complex sustainability issues which surround platinum and PGMs. At present, South Africa is the dominant PGMs producer and holds about 88 per cent of estimated global resources, with important but relatively minor production and resources in Zimbabwe, Russia, Canada and the United States. Given the concentrated location of PGM resources, what are the likely trends in PGM mining with respect to environmental sustainability? That is, what are the costs in terms of energy, pollution, greenhouse gas emissions, water, land use impacts, social impacts, economic aspects associated with this globally important industry? This paper compiles and analyses a range of data on platinum-PGM mining, focusing primarily on South Africa. It synthesises a unique combination of data which relates typical production aspects such as ore grade and scale with sustainability aspects such as greenhouse, energy and water costs. The findings are critical in understanding the debate about the increasing environmental and social costs of some materials and technologies which are considered crucial for sustainable industries based on PGMs. Overall, the paper represents a valuable insight into the platinum-PGM sector, providing a range of useful data for understanding the environmental sustainability of this particular group of precious metals.

Models of the size specific processes of particle collision, attachment and detachment have been combined in a form suitable for analysis of a full-scale flotation plant. The model is based on a first principal approach to particle collection by bubbles. Parameters considered include particle size, bubble size, particle contact angle, energy dissipation, entrainment and froth recovery. Using data structures configured within an Excel spreadsheet using æLimn: The Flowsheet ProcessorÆ, the model has been incorporated into a description of the individual cells within a simple roughing and cleaning flotation circuit. Simulated feeds of varying particle size distribution, feed tonnage and varying mineral hydrophobicity representing different mineral phases are presented to the model to produce predicted final concentrate grades and recoveries. Practical techniques for measuring many of the parameters included in the model are now becoming readily available. However, relating the terms included for contact angle, energy dissipation, entrainment (ie water recovery) and froth recovery to measurable parameters in operating plants remain as continuing challenges for research.

The New South Wales coal industry is a highly mechanised well organised industry which has developed from an annual production of slightly less than 13 million tons in 1950 to over 33 million tons in 1969. Although continuous miners were not introduced into the mines until 1950, by Jillle 1969 the percentage of coal won by these units was 87.3. The paper describes mining conditions in the various coalfields of the State, their complexities and problems and how these have been dealt with. The introduction of fully mechanised long wall faces has presented a challenge which has been accepted and descriptions of systems in use are discussed. Major expansion of the industry is anticipated to meet the requirements of the growing Australian steel industry, for local power generation and to meet the increasing demands of overseas markets.

Faults cutting the Lithgow and Katoomba seams in some collieries of the Western Coalfield can be classified, on the basis of spatial pattern, into three principal groups: meridional swarms of closely spaced minor faults and associated joints, with throws of less than 0.5 m and with exceptional faults of up to 5 m; isolated interswarm strike-slip faults in the Lithgow seam and widely spaced strike-slip faults in swarms in the Katoomba seam; and low-angle normal faults associated with the Lidsdale-Lithgow seam split.Orientations of faults and coal cleats in the coalfield are presented on stereoplots and histograms, as a basis for an analysis of fault dynamics. The low-angle normal faults were found to have been formed only along the Lidsdale-Lithgow seam split, and before the high-angle faults. The origin of the high-angle normal faults in the meridional swarms is discussed and it is suggested that basementcover interactions must have occurred. This suggestion is supported by geophysical evidence. Low-amplitude monoclines in the coal seam, and the spacing of swarms 0.9 to 4.5 km apart, may be due to the underlying basement structure.It is clear that postextensional compressive deformation of swarms in the coalfield gave rise to shortening by minor thrust development, and probably also caused the synchronous strike-slip movement on pre-existing normal faults. There is evidence to show that isolated interswarm strike-slip faults in the Lithgow seam, and widely spaced strike-slip faults in the Katoomba seam, may have originated synchronously with such thrusts. The axis of maximum principal compression ('71) for the thrust event was inferred to be near horizontal and aligned approximately E-W. Recent rock mechanics measurements of the present day stress field indicate a similar stress configuration.

The Wolgan Seam of the Upper Permian IlIawarra Coal Measures of the Western Coalfield of New South Wales consists of high volatile, low sulphur, medium hard coking coal with high fluidity. This seam, 1·8-2·4m thick, in the Wolgan area, dips gently at 1°_20 ENE and lies at 160-440m below the deeply dissected surface of the western margin of the Blue Mountains plateau.A detailed study of the deposit has revealed that the Wolgan Seam consists of four main coal plies separated by three distinct stone bands. Each of these subunits is lenticular and displays individual physical, chemical and mineralogical characteristics which exhibit distinct spatial distribution patterns across the area. Most noticeable is the presence of long linear ESE-trending zones of low ash - high volatiles - high fixed carbon - high fluidity which delineate the major distributary pattern within the deltaic environment of coal formation.This seam contains some of the highest fluidity coal in the world.The Wolgan area, close to the western margin of the Sydney Basin, is characterized by:I. a regional, closely spaced, homogenous joint fracture pattern dominated by an orthogonal pair set trending 3400 and 0700, to which the face- and butt-cleat directions respectively of the Wolgan Seam are sub-parallel, and2. a more widely spaced, heterogenous, cross-cutting pattern of regional structural fractures. Zones of bad roof conditions are probably associated with these lineaments which are subvertical and trend in three majordirections, viz., 005°,035° and 115°.

Zinc-bearing materials containing chlorides and fluorides of alkali metals, such as electric arc furnace dusts, Waelz oxides, galvanising ashes, brass foundry and converter fumes are marginally attractive, both technically and economically, for processing by the Imperial Smelting Process or in a conventional zinc sulphate electrolytic plant. The EZINEX« Process allows the recovery of high purity zinc in cathode form from these materials, together with regeneration of the leach liquor. The process is based on a new electrochemical system which depolarises the anode reaction with reduction of the cell voltage, compared with the traditional sulphate electrolysis method. The electrolyte, based on a chloroammino complex, permits the recovery of other valuable metals present in the zinc bearing materials such as lead, copper and silver. These are recovered as a metallic cement, consequently improving the economics of the process.
