The hot-blast oven of which the accompanying plate gives complete details, was designed by the writer for the spiegel-furnace of the Lehigh Zinc and Iron Co., at Bethlehem, Pa. Members of the Institute who visit these works will have occasion to notice the large amount of zinc-dust in the gases, and the consequent dirtiness of both the hot-blast and the boilers. The zinc collects in a crust on the iron hot-blast pipes and leads to the frequent burning of them. A large vertical standing-pipe stove, a modification of the "Pleyer," thus gave considerable trouble by the burning of pipes and, on one occasion, the toppling over of a whole row. These inconveniences are avoided in the hanging-pipe stove under consideration, and less heating-surface has been found to be required to heat the blast to a given temperature. The construction of the stove is so simple and so plainly shown in the plate that it is needless to enlarge upon it. Each pipe rests in a box and is connected by U-branches with the next adjoining pipes. An iron sleeve is placed around the joint and tightened, as usual, with iron filings. In case of a pipe burning out, that particular section is cut off by the valves and the sleeves are broken. The pipe is then readily lifted out of the box and a new one is substituted. The whole operation requires only a short time and the section can then be at once put into use. The boxes supporting the pipes cover the whole surface of the hot-blast and are closed by iron covers rammed with fire-clay. Owing to the air-space around the U-pipes there is little loss of heat in the upper part of the stove. Each section as built has 280 square feet of heating-surface. The furnace is blown by a horizontal engine with 46-inch stroke and 48-inch diameter of blowing-tube. At 28 to 30 revolutions, the engine delivers 3000 cubic feet of air per minute, at a pressure of 5 pounds. When five sections of stove are in use, the blast enters the furnace at a temperature of 850" F. That is, there are over two cubic feet of air per square foot of heating-surface heated to that temperature per minute.

INTRODUCTION The Chord property was acquired in 1975 from Roy Chord, an early prospector and miner of the area. He had staked numerous claims on the southern flank of the Black Hills in the early 19501s, and by the late 50’s, many small open pit and underground mines had been or were in operation. By the mid 1960's small tonnages of high-grade oxidized uranium ore had been mined from the property. Starting in 1975, Union Carbide conducted a series of exploration programs to determine the remaining economic potential. The previously mined areas were re-examined in order to define additional oxidized mineralization. Meanwhile, a wide-spaced drilling program was initiated to determine the potential for deeper unoxidized deposits. Through the exploration program of 1979, measured minable reserves in excess of two million pounds of contained uranium had been discovered. GEOLOGY The Edgemont District is located on the southern end of the Black Hills Uplift. A succession of pre-Cambrian to Cretaceous Formations is exposed within the core and across the flanks. The uranium host is the lower Cretaceous Inyan Kara Group which is divided into two formations, the Lakota and Fall River Formations (Figure 1). The basal Lakota Formation rests unconformably on the Jurassic Morrison Formation and consists of fluvial channel sandstones

The transformation characteristics are found to resemble a similar binary alloy. The differences are due to the alpha iron particles. While strength properties of the isothermally transformed alloys are high, ductility is low, resulting in high notch sensitivity. The elastic modulus can be varied widely and correlates with strength. Abnormal grain growth sometimes occurs. A CONSIDERABLE amount of work has been done on the isothermal transformation of high purity aluminum bronzes using the methods pioneered by Davenport and Bain.' The first isothermal study of these alloys was made by Smith and Lind-lief,' but more recently Mack", " and Klier and Grymko5 have continued the work. In commercial aluminum bronzes, one or more elements are always added to refine the ß grain size and to improve the mechanical properties. The effect of these elements on the isothermal transformation has not been reported in the literature. No systematic study of the properties of isother-mally transformed aluminum bronzes has apparently been reported, although adequate information is available on their properties after more conventional heat treatments. The fact that a eutectoid alloy will reject face-centered cubic a during isothermal transformation at appropriate temperatures2'" warrants investigation of the properties of such structures. Another cogent reason for determination of properties is the fact that the modulus of elasticity of the eutectoid alloy varies widely with the nature of the heat treatment." Preliminary experiments7 indicated that a high purity eutectoid alloy would not give reproducible results in property determinations because of ex- cessive ß grain growth during heat treatment, a single ß grain frequently occupying the entire cross-section of a standard test bar. For this reason a commercial aluminum bronze containing iron as a grain growth inhibitor was used. The isothermal transformation diagram of the alloy was first determined. On this basis, the heat treatments necessary to produce representative structures were selected and the properties determined. Material A commercial alloy (Ampco Grade 20) of the following composition was used: Cu, 83.68 pct; Al, 12.31 pct; Fe, 3.68 pct; Ni, 0.28 pct; and Mn, 0.03 pct. This alloy proved to be very close to the eutectoid composition and may be compared with the accepted value of 11.8 pct A1 in the binary Cu-A1 system. Comparison is valid only because of the "negative replacement effect" of the iron? Since traces of excess y² are present, the alloy is slightly hyper-eutectoid. The material was received in the form of 3/4 in. round, hot extruded bars. Specimens of approximately ? in. thickness were cut from this stock and drilled to allow suspension in the salt bath. The structure of the as-received material varied from 5 to 40 pct a + y2* in a matrix of ß. The amount of a + y² present was dependent upon the ß grain size of the extruded material. There are many inconsistencies and gaps in available information concerning the mechanism whereby dodecylamine acts as a collector for quartz. The author compares the studies which have been made in correlating the contact angle with adsorption density on quartz over all pH ranges, and attempts to resolve some of the inconsistencies. In recent years much information has been obtained concerning the mechanism whereby dodecylamine acts as a collector for quartz. Fuerstenau,1 for ex- ample, has shown that adsorption density and zeta potential under some conditions, at least, can be correlated with contact angle and flotation rate. There appear, however, to be several inconsistencies and gaps in information available. One inconsistency involves trying to correlate contact angle with adsorption density on quartz over all pH ranges. Fuerstenau's correlation at a collector concentration of 4x10-5 moles per liter dodecylamine acetate and about pH 10 shows a contact angle of about 80 degrees occurring at approximately monolayer coverage. If Gaudin and Morrow's2 and Morrow's3 contact angle data for near neutrality (pH 6 to 7) are now compared with deBruyn's4,5 adsorption data on quartz in a similar pH range, it will be noticed that a contact angle of 38 to 40 degrees corresponds to complete monolayer coverage (at an amine concentration of approximately 10"3 molar). WHEN a new type of equipment revolutionizes methods of quarrying one kind of stone, producers of other kinds focus their attention on its potentialities in their particular fields. The purpose of this paper is to discuss the accomplishments of the wire saw in slate, to show its more limited attainments in other kinds of stone, and to point out the possibili-ties of much wider application. A wire saw consists of a 3/16-in. or 1/4-in. three-strand wire cable that runs as a belt and cuts the rock by abrasion. (Fig. 1.) The teeth of the saw are sand grains carried in the grooves between the strands.

In order to control a chemical process by other than empirical, rule of thumb methods, two types of knowledge concerning the reactions involved must be available: (1) the thermodynamics of the reactions, and (2), by no means less important for efficient operation, the mechanisms and kinetics of the reactions. Information on the thermodynamic side enables the operator to decide upon initial and final conditions, whether heat must be added or removed from the system, whether the reactions proceed farthest in the desired direction at high pressure or low, etc. Knowledge of the mechanisms involves the determination of the individual steps by which an initial set of reactants, under given conditions, proceed to give the desired final products and kinetic studies upon which the mechanisms are based give the speed at which each of these reactions or steps take place. Thus thermodynamic studies of a reaction enable the operator to control the direction and extent to which the reaction can proceed, while kinetic studies enable him to control rates and thus the time efficiency of the operations. The thermodynamics set the limit to which the reacting system approaches; the kinetics tell how fast the system actually approaches this limit. The two types of information are complementary and not antagonistic even though in discussing the mechanism the introduction of thermodynamics is entirely needless and generally of no assistance, while in thermodynamic studies mechanism need not even be mentioned. Heterogeneous Reactions The thermodynamic side of metallurgical reactions has received much attention in the past; the mechanisms, relatively, very little. The main reason for our present lack of information on the mechanisms of these reactions lies in the fact that every one of importance is a heterogenkous reaction; i. e., the substances involved in the reaction exist in more than one phase, while, if we neglect the large amount of work which has been

Discussion of the paper of M. B. YUNG, presented at the Pittsburgh meeting; October, 1914, and printed in Bulletin No. 93, September, 1914, pp. 2451 to 2458. T. T. READ, New York, N. Y.-I might .point out that this paper of Mr. Yung's is on a field that is comparatively little known. It is not as well known as the Kochiu tin field, of Yunnan, which is probably the third . in tin output of the world. This field under discussion is considerably further west and the tin which is produced here is, according to Mr. Yung, of somewhat higher grade than the Yunnan tin, and is used by the refiners at Hong Kong to improve the grade of the Yunnan tin. Most of you know that the tin from the Yunnan is shipped to Hong Kong, where it is refined and shipped to Europe. Mr. Yung points out that the Fu Chuan deposits are entirely alluvial and not found in any veins. They .differ in that from the Kochiu deposits, which Leclere says are "nullement alluvionels; leur origéne filonienne est de plus evidentes." Granite is the country rock here; doubtless the tin occurred in veins in the granite, and the deposits have resulted from the disintegration of the granite. This is a country of strong erosive agencies. The country is semi-tropical, and the rainfall is heavy, so that one would naturally expect deep surface erosion of this kind.

The production of petroleum in Canada is relatively small in proportion to the amount of oil consumed. Production figures are given in Tables 1 and 2, which show that the production in Alberta for 1934 was more than for the whole of Canada in 1933. The production of natural gas for Canada is shown in Table 3, In Turner Valley, the largest producing gas and oil field in Alberta, seven naphtha wells from the Paleozoic limestone and one crude oil well from Lower Cretaceous strata were completed during the year. A theoretical investigation has been made of the forward combustion process using a one-dimensional linear mathematical model, taking into consideration the effect of the vaporization-condensation which occurs on the leading edge of the heat wave. This work involves the solution of five coupled partial differential equations. Besides the vaporization-condensation phenomenon, these equations account for conduction, convection, combustion, heat loss, diffusion and bulk fluid flow. For the one-dimensional linear model studied, the vaporization-condensation phenomenon does not induce appreciable change in the temperature at the combustion front; and its primary effect is to create a steam plateau and to increase the length of the heated zone ahead of the combustion front. This effect becomes more pronounced at lower pressures, higher porosities or reduced gas saturations. The peak temperature and the temperature profile on the leading edge of the heat wave stabilize after a certain period. The length of the steam bank remains practically constant, although the length of the water bank increases as the heat wave advances. INTRODUCTION The existence of the vaporization-condensation phenomenon in the heat-wave process and the important role played by the phenomenon have been recognized by several investigators. Kuhn and Kochl stated that steam plateaus were frequently observed on the temperature records of their experiments. The steam plateaus were attributed primarily to the vaporization and subsequent condensation of the interstitial water existing in the oil sand. Szasz2 suggested that both lighter hydrocarbons and water are vaporized on the leading edge of the heat wave, carried forward in the gas stream, and then condensed to create banks of oil and water. Martin et al suggested that the vaporization-condensation phenomenon is one of the main mechanisms of the heat-wave process, along with thermal expansion and viscosity reduction. Wilson et al. reported the existence of a steam plateau several inches in length in their small-scale tube-run experiments. However, this important phenomenon has never been taken into consideration in the numerous theoretical analyses by various authors. 5 The purpose of this work was to study the thermal aspects of a linear heat wave, taking into consideration the vaporization-condensation on the leading edge of the wave, to determine the effect of this phenomenon on the temperature profile of the reservoir, and to investigate how this effect varies when other process variables are changed. THEORY We consider a reservoir of porous medium of cross-sectional area A, extending from x = 0 to x = L. This reservoir contains, aside from the solid matrix itself, a gas phase and a "combined liquid phase" which is a combination of two immiscible liquid phases — namely, an oil phase and a water phase. The oil present in the reservoir is assumed to consist of three fractions, a noncondensable gas, a nondistillable residuum, and a vaporizable oil fraction which may be present in both the gas phase and liquid phase. Before the heat-wave process begins, preheating has taken place and has imparted an initial temperature distribution T,(x) to the reservoir. At the start of the process, a stream of oxygen-bearing gas is introduced through the face at x = 0. This gas supports the combustion of the residual fuel and supplies the heat throughout the process. In order to develop a tractable system of equations, the model properties are postulated as follows: (1) the system is isotropic and homogeneous; (2) there is a uniform fuel content throughout the reservoir; (3) combustion takes place in a moving vertical planar region of infinitesimal thickness; (4) the temperatures of the fluids and the solid matrix are identical; (5) radiation is negligible; (6) the gas and liquid saturations are uniform throughout the reservoir and remain unchanged

The diffision coefficient for self-diffision of plutonium in the temperature range 350" to 440°C has been measured by using puZ3 as the tracer isotope. Autoradiopaphic techniques were used to inzlestigate the possibility of grain boundary diffusion, hut only evidence for volume diffusion was found. The least-squares fit of the data gives the .following equation for the diffision coefficient: The computer least-squares technique for fitting the nonlinear equations is outlined. DETERMINATION of the self-diffusion coefficient of the fcc 6 phase of plutonium is in principle a straightforward experimental task. However, the chemical reactivity, the intense @ activity, and the toxicity of plutonium put limitations on the experimental techniques. The technique selected included roll bonding for preparation of the diffusion couples and pulse-height analysis of the @-particle activity to determine the distribution of the PU tracer in the diffusion couples. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Couple Preparation. Cylinders about 0.5 in. in diam were cast from two special stocks of plutonium, one of which had been enriched in puZ3', as shown in the isotopic analyses listed in Table I. For each roll-bonded composite sheet, a cylinder 0.437 in. in diam and 0.190 in. thick was turned from each kind of plutonium on a lathe in a 98 pct He atmosphere. The two freshly machined cylinders were positioned face to face in a tube of commercially pure aluminum which had been sealed at one end by welding and the assembly was evacuated on a vacuum manifold overnight. The elapsed time between machining the faces of the plutonium cylinders and evacuating the loaded tube was about 15 min. After overnight evacuation of the assembly the indicated vacuum was 1 X 10"5 torr or better. The aluminum tube was then warmed and pinched off with a cold-welding tool. The pinched-off weld was also fusion-welded as an additional precaution against leakage of air into the evacuated assembly. The assembly was immediately heated for 30 min in a 250°C furnace and reduced in thickness by being passed through a rolling mill with rolls heated to 200°C. The rolling schedule (four passes of 100 mils each with a 10-min reheat after two passes) reduced the thickness of the assembly to 100 mils. The rolled assembly was allowed to cool normally in air. The rolled assembly was sheared at the edges and the aluminum peeled from the composite plutonium sheet. The elliptical sheet was about 0.060 in. thick and usually three 0.383-in.-diam disks could be punched from its central portion. The sheet was heated on a hot plate to the ductile low 0 range (140°C as measured by temperature-indicating pellets) before each disk was quickly punched. The quality of the bond in the disks was evaluated by metallographic examination of the scrap sheet adjoining the hole left by the punch. Only well-bonded specimens without oxide in the interface (as indicated by metallography) were considered satisfactory for further use. More than half of the specimens so examined contained sufficient oxide in the interface to be rejected. Diffusion Anneal. Each disk to be diffusion-annealed was wrapped in 1-mil-thick tantalum foil and sealed within a Pyrex capsule evacuated to 1 x 10~5 torr or better. This capsule was then sealed within another Pyrex capsule at a similar pressure. The diffusion anneals were carried out at temperatures between 350" and 440°C in Marshall furnaces adjusted to have a temperature gradient of not more than *1/2"C over a 5-in. length. This gradient was then further smoothed by using a nickel tube as a liner in the furnace. The liner was divided into three longitudinal cavities by a septum of nickel sheet to which two calibrated Chromel-Alumel thermocouples were attached. One thermocouple was used for controlling the furnace temperature by means of a Brown Pyrovane controller equipped with a Capaciline anticipation circuit; the second thermocouple was monitored twice daily with a Leeds and Northrup K-2 precision potentiometer.

An experimental and theoretical treatment of the depressing effect of inorganic electrolytes on the amine flotation of quartz is presented. Experimental data obtained for the amine flotation of quartz as a function of pH with potassium nitrate as depressant was used to test the models for the effectiveness of inorganic ions as depressants. The validity of commonly used assumptions are examined. The surface tension data obtained for dodecylammonium acetate solutions as a function of KNO3, concentration indicated that the collector adsorption on bubble cannot be neglected in the treatments, since this adsorption changes significantly with the addition of the inorganic electrolyte. It also indicated the possibility of significant changes in the specific adsorption potential of the collector occurring with the addition of inorganic electrolytes.

THE iron ores of the Marquette region are mostly extracted in open excavations; hence the process is more properly quarrying. Several attempts at underground work have been made, which have not, on the whole, been successful. The Edwards mine has been almost entirely wrought by candle-light. The slate ore pit, NO. 1, of the New England mine, is now worked in the same way, as is also the Pioneer furnace pit of the Jackson mine. The Champion mine was opened systematically for underground work, with two levels, 60 feet apart, and three shafts at distances apart along the bed of 200 feet; but this idea has been practically abandoned, the greater part of the ore in that mine being now taken out in open pits. Several other mines have occasionally worked underground stopes, but only temporarily; if such stopes could not be opened out to daylight, they have usually been abandoned. In brief, it may be said that no considerable amount of ore has as yet (1870) .been extracted underground in the region, and of that so mined very little has been taken out at a profit; and I may add that it seems to be the belief of the most experienced mining men that this state of things will hold for some time to come for reasons which will appear. Nearly the same remarks may be applied to the mines of the Iron Mountain region, Missouri, the ores of which are very similar in character to those of Marquette. Some of the New York and New Jersey magnetic deposits are wrought open, but this is the exception, underground mining there being the rule. The following brief sketch of the geological structure of the Marquette deposits will indicate some advantages of the method of mining employed. The iron-bearing (Huronian) series of rocks, are stratified beds, the principal ore formation being overlaid by a quartzite, and underlaid by a diorite, or greenstone. A mathematical model, which does not assume a priori that stratification exists, but was designed to test for the stratification was developed. The model segmented the reservoir horizontally into areas of common variance, then divided it vertically into strata (if strata were present). Next, trend surface techniques were used to determine the lateral extent and variation of each stratum. The model was tested on two reservoirs (sandstone and limestone) using porosity as the reservoir rock property. The sandstone reservoir contained approximately 60,000 samples from 2,000 cored wells, while the limestone reservoir had approximately 24,000 samples from 430 cored wells. Within the areas of common variance tested, the model was able to distinguish four separate lithological units or zones in the sandstone reservoir, four in the Marly section and seven in the Vuggy section of the limestone reservoir. INTRODUCTION To accurately predict the movement and production of fluids from a reservoir rock, it is necessary that the reservoir engineer have a knowledge of the rock properties and their distribution throughout the reservoir. For this study, a reservoir rock is defined as a solid containing interconnecting holes or voids which occur relatively frequently and are dispersed within the rock in a regular or random manner. The fraction of bulk volume that these interconnecting voids occupy is called porosity. The rock must also possess sufficient permeability to allow fluids to move through it and it may be composed of one or more strata or lithological units. A stratum or lithological unit as defined in this study is a body or volume of reservoir rock whose properties are so distributed that its lateral and vertical extent can be traced throughout or through a portion of the reservoir. Operationally, the existence of strata are question- able unless the variance within strata is less than among strata. Within the past few years computers have been widely used as a tool for calculating movement and production of fluids from reservoirs. Most prediction models require some type of a mathematical description of certain reservoir rock properties. In the past, most of these models have been relatively simple. Some have assumed vertical variation but no lateral variation, while others have assumed lateral variation but no vertical variation. In general, most of these models have not used functional relationships to predict reservoir rock properties as functions of position. The object of this study was to develop a model which would predict lateral and vertical variations of reservoir rock properties. Since samples are usually available from only a small portion of the total reservoir rock, it seemed logical that if measurements from these samples were to be used to infer the properties of the actual reservoir, the data should be treated statistically as a sample from the total population (reservoir). Therefore, the model developed in this study to predict reservoir rock properties was a stochastic model. The model was tested using porosity (a macroscopic reservoir rock property) measurements from two reservoirs — the first, a sandstone reservoir from which 60,000 samples were obtained; and the second, a limestone reservoir with 24,000 samples. Several investigators have proposed methods to determine the vertical and areal variation of a reservoir rock property. Stiles: Dykstra and Parsons 2 and Suder and Calhoun3 have all developed waterflooding prediction techniques which assume vertical variation but no lateral variation. Stiles developed a method to segment a reservoir arbitrarily using frequency distribution. Law4 suggested that porosity has a normal frequency distribution and that permeability has a log-normal frequency distribution. THE pronounced and usually deleterious effects of sulphur on all ferrous metals and the resultant necessity for its control in metallurgical processes have stimulated many investigations of the system iron-sulphur. The data required for thermodynamic study of the behavior of sulphur in molten iron and steel include the activity and free energy of the dissolved sulphur and its heat of solution. Such data are also of theoretical interest since there is all too little information available concerning solutions of nonmetallic solutes in metallic solvents. It was the purpose of this investigation to attack the problem very directly by a study of equilibrium at several temperatures in the reaction H2 (gas) + S = H2S (gas) [1] K1 = PH2S /PH2 as where the sulphur is present in the liquid iron in amounts up to several percent by weight. Such a method of attack is not new since several careful studies have already been reported. It is planned, however, to extend the study to other metallic solvents and particularly to determine the effects of the various alloying elements on the activity of sulphur in liquid iron. This paper presents the results on molten iron-sulphur alloys containing up to 4 pct sulphur in the temperature range 1530°-1730°C. An investigation has been conducted to determine the nature of the crystallographic substructure of nickel and a 1.0 wt pct Ag-Ni alloy which had been undercooled 105°C prior to solidification. A rotating back-reflection X-ray technique and modified Weissmann diffractometer were used to orient single-crystal sections from these poly-crystalline ingots and to determine the substruc-tural features of these single crystals, The sub-grain size in the pure nickel ingot is 0.5 mm diam while the silver-doped nickel subgrain size is only 0.1 mm diam. The misorientation between adjacent subgrains is approximately 1 deg of arc in both ingots, and the spread of orientation of sub-grains about the mean orientation of the crystal is 5 deg of arc in both ingots. The addition of silver results in a stable impurity substructure which is preserved during isothermal solidification and subsequent cooling to room temperature. In the absence of silver the initial impurity substructure is destroyed by dislocation interactions which produce a secondary substructure which grows to a size five times larger than the initial substructure. THE process of undercooling a metal entails cooling of the molten sample below the equilibrium freezing point without the occurrence of solidification, i.e., by exercising proper constraint over the experimental variables contributing to nucleation in the melt. The current work of walker1 and Colligan Metal reports undercooling large continuous samples of nickel by imposing appropriate restrictions upon the parameters of solidification. The silver-nickel equilibrium diagram3 reveals the presence of a monotectic reaction at 1435°C. At this temperature the maximum solid solubility of silver in nickel is approximately 3 wt pct, but this solubility decreases with decreasing temperature and the solute is rejected as a silver-rich liquid phase at temperatures below 1435°C. Thus, the 1.0 wt pct solute should be held in solution during undercooling and solidification and subsequently precipitate as a silver-rich liquid phase at grain and subgrain boundaries following solidification during cooling below 1435. This assumes no solute segregation sufficient to cause the monotectic reaction. One would expect this second phase to inhibit grain and subgrain growth by retarding dislocation motion after solidification is complete. The effectiveness of silver addition in growth retardation of high-angle grain boundaries has been demonstrated by Colligan and suprenantS4 The principal [l00] dendrite growth directions in a 2 wt pct Ag-Ni alloy undercooled 53 all radiated from the nucleation site. A similar pure nickel ingot undercooled 59°C exhibited a random orientation of [l00] dendrite directions with respect to the nucleation site. Since undoped nickel ingots do not retain any evidence of the casting or solidification texture and silver-doped ingots do retain this texture, it is reasonable to assume that considerable grain growth has taken place in the pure nickel. These particular experiments were performed in order to reveal the differences, if any, in the features of the crystallographic substructure of undoped undercooled nickel and silver-doped undercooled nickel. 1) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Data are reported on selected specimens from two massive (approximately 260 g) undercooled ingots of nickel. One ingot consisted of electrolytic nickel and the other of this same material with 1.0 wt pct addition of high-purity silver. Powder patterns were taken of both the as-received and as-solidified materials; in all cases the reflections recorded were attributable to the individual elements nickel and/or silver. Fig. 1 is a. schematic diagram of the apparatus employed for the undercooling experiments. The equipment consists in part of a fused silica crucible for containing the charge. A fused silica tube encloses the system, which is covered by a brass cap to permit partial sealing of the inert atmosphere. This cap contains a hole through which a Pt-Pt 13 pct Rh thermocouple is inserted for temperature measurement. The charge is inductively heated under a purified argon atmosphere.

Fully a decade ago, demand for ground mica began to exceed supplies of scrap mica from manufacturing operations and of waste block from feldspar and sheet mica mining in the United States, with the result that in recent years the market has absorbed larger and larger quantities of mica recovered as a by-product from clay washing,1 as a joint product with kyanite12 and by grinding schists. So far, only schists that contain a large percentage of mica have been utilized for making ground mica, but already there has been a good deal of wishful thinking with regard to recovering mica as an aid to the prospective working of low-grade gold ores and ores of certain base metals. With wet-ground mica selling at $60 to $100 a ton and even dry-ground mica worth over $20 a ton, many ores that could not be considered as otherwise workable under present conditions will show commercial possibilities if they can be made to yield even a relatively small percentage of salable mica. An interesting paper might be written on the coming role of industrial minerals as joint products of metal mines. It is largely a matter of markets. Many years ago I watched the mess left behind the gold dredges in the mountains of Colorado and thought of the Denver sand and gravel operators who prided themselves upon their canniness in providing devices for catching gold merely as an incident to their regular business of selling what we miners classed as "tailings." Nowadays almost every milling or mining operation near settled communities finds use for at least part of its waste for road material or concrete aggregate and several eastern iron mines have gone into the crushed-stone business. Promoters now mention fertilizer "filler" as potentially salable at all the way from $1 to $10 a ton, or whatever is needed to cover costs of mining and treating the "ore" and leave the metal values as "clear profit." In emulating the pork packers in their efforts to utilize "everything but the squeal," mining engineers may go too far; on the other hand, they should not let

Uranium ores occur in the Lower Cretaceous Inyan Kara group of heterogeneously stratified fluvial and fluvial-marine sandstones in the Black Hills of western South Dakota and northeastern Wyoming. There are three principal mining districts, each in the ancestral and present drainage area of a major river partially responsible for stripping the region to its present topographic form. Primary minerals in the deposits are coffinite and uraninite with minor amounts of paramontroseite and haggite. The ore minerals coat sand grains and fill interstices of complexly cross-stratified sandstone along solution fronts similar to "roll" type deposits of the other districts. Minerals of oxidized deposits are typically carnotite and tyuyamunite with different proportions of secondary vanadium accessory minerals. Ground water was the transporting medium and deposition of primary uranium and vanadium minerals occurred in reducing environments produced and controlled by physio-chemical characteristics of the sedimentary rocks.

Applications of mathematical statistics to the field of exploration are still relatively new. There are two primary reasons why little has been published in this field. First, if one discovers an effective technique for exploration, he does not like to disclose it. Second, the geologist needs to work closely with a mathematical statistician, and the communications barrier between the disciplines is formidable. The authors, one a geologist and the other a statistician, were interested in the economic benefit which appeared to be possible in the inter-disciplinary area they call "geostatistics."
