The No. 2 unit of the West Mill of the Bunker Hill & Sullivan Mining & Concentrating Co., which went into commission Apr. 17, 1912, is structurally a twin of the No. 1 unit, which was started Nov. 9, 1909. Up to the point where the ore enters the concentrating-de-partment, it follows precisely the process described by G. Cae-tani in his article entitled, Milling of Lead-Silver Ores,' under the heading, Preparation of the Mill-Ore. The process from this point forward, in the No. 2 section, is outlined on the accompanying flow-sheet. In describing it I shall attempt to analyze the products of each separate process. The constancy of the tonnage and the uniformity of the quality of the feed render this practicable. No. 1.—550 tons of feed, all having passed 30 mm., is washed into two 15-mm. trommels, 4 ft, in diameter, 60 in. long, 17 rev. per min., 1 in. slope, 3/8-in. gauge steel.

ALTHOUGH many elements reduce the tendency to porosity in steel castings, manganese, silicon, aluminum, calcium, titanium and zirconium appear to be most generally suitable for the purpose. The manganese and silicon contents are usually maintained in a fairly constant range. Sili-con-killed castings often are made to be sound with little or no addition of the stronger degasifiers. In many cases, however, it is more practical to utilize the stronger degasifying elements, aluminum, calcium, titanium and zirconium. Since they greatly modify the composition, shape, and distribution of the nonmetallic inclusions, and thereby the ductility, the strong deoxidizers must be used in such a way as to form the least harmful types of inclusions. As the reasons for failure always to obtain good results have not been obvious, an effort has been made to determine the mechanism of solidification of steels deoxidized to produce certain types of inclusions. Diagrams representing the mechanism of their formation have been constructed from the appearance of the nonmetallic con-stituents and have not only illustrated the limiting features of specific deoxidizing treatments with respect to inclusion formation and ductility, but have also indicated a relation between inclusions and resistance to hot tearing. Three different types of deoxidation treatment have been used for obtaining sound castings with relatively high ductility. The first method is to make and cast the steel under such conditions that deoxidation with silicon and a small addition of a strong deoxidizer assures soundness. The effective addition that will promote soundness without causing the formation of intergranular inclusions varies with the furnace practice and composition, but may be limited to about 0.025 per cent Al, Zr or Ti. Up to 0.10 per cent Ca and 0.15 per cent V are also used for this purpose. The inclusions in these steels are characteristically glassy silicates and round or irregular sulphides. UNDER sulfur in coal, is usually understood that form of sulfur which is combined with iron and known as pyrite. It occurs in the form of halls, lenses, nodules, continuous layers, thin sheets, or flakes, both in horizontal planes and vertical cleavage fissures. But pyrites also occur as very fine microscopic particles, or nodules, disseminated through the compact coal. This form has had but very little consideration. Finally, there is sulfur in coal in an amicroscopic form (not visible with an ordinary microscope), probably combined with the organic matter that exists -in tile coal. This form has had considerable attention from a scientific standpoint, but has probably not been recognized enough on the economic side. One or the other, or both, of these two latter forms may comprise the larger part of the sulfur content of coal, especially after it has been washed or otherwise prepared for use.

A liquid-Freon permeameter suitable for making routine permeability determinations on small plug samples is described. The instrument is characterized by simplicity of design and ease of operation, and can be assembled inexpensively from stock items of laboratory equipment. It combines the unique advantages of both liquid and gas permeam-eters while eliminating many undesirable features of both general classes of instruments. Precision and accuracy of the specific Freon permeability measurements compare favorably with results of conventional liquid and gas permeameters. INTRODUCTION The liquid-Freon permeameter described in this paper was designed and built for special investigations of the properties of petroleum reservoir rocks. However, its unique advantages over conventional gas and liquid permeameters make it eminently suitable for routine use in the core analysis of small plug samples. In general, gas permeameters are very popular because of their simplicity of design and ease of operation. However, apparent gas permeabilities are normally higher than true specific permeabilities unless special corrections for gas-slippage are applied. Since these corrections require two or more measurements at different internal gas pressures, much of the time advantage of the specific gas permeability measurements is lost. Liquid permeability measurements, on the other hand, require no slip correction, but liquid saturation of the sample is time-consuming and difficult to insure. Often, too, the saturating liquid must be extracted or dried from the plug before it can be used for another experiment. The liquid-Freon permeameter described herein retains the inherent accuracy of the liquid permeameter, while affording the speed and ease of operation of the gas permeameter. Freon-12 (dichlorodifluoromethane) is a haloge-nated hydrocarbon, immiscible in the liquid phase with water. It may be considered as an oil phase in laboratory fluid-flow studies. Like butane and propane, it is a gas at normal room temperatures and atmospheric pressure but can be liquefied at moderate pressures. Complete liquid saturation of a plug sample with any of these fluids can be easily achieved by condensing vapors in the sample and operating the permeameter at a pressure above the vapor pressure of the liquid. Freon-12 is superior to butane or propane for permeability measurements only in that it is relatively nontoxic and completely incombustible, and thus presents no fire or explosion hazard. Freon-12 is believed to be completely nonreactive with most petroleum-reservoir rock samples. It volatilizes immediately from a plug on depressurizing to leave a clean, dry sample suitable for subsequent experiments. Thus, the inherent risk of changing physical properties of rock samples by cleaning and drying operations between permeability measurement and subsequent experiments is eliminated. IN recent years, the damping capacity of metals has come to be recognized as an important index of certain types of structural change. In a number of instances, this property has proved to be particularly sensitive, but insufficient work has been done to permit a general inter-pretation. There is considerable question at the present time as to just what factors are responsible for the internal dissipation of energy when a metal is carried through a cycle of stress, and these factors must be ascertained if the value of the damping method as a metallurgical tool is to be determined. Since internal stresses are among the chief causes of dissipation of internal energy, or damping capacity, it was thought that a study of the changes in damping during the recovery and recrystalliza-tion of a cold-worked metal might throw some light upon the subject, particularly if the damping changes were correlated with other properties that are better understood. Probably more work has been done on the recrystallization phenomena of alpha brass than on any other metal, so this was chosen as the material for the present investigation. Damping measurements on brass have been made by Förster and Köster.1 They showed that the annealing of a brass that had been cold-drawn to 50 per cent reduction produced a rapid fall in the damping, a flat minimum occurring at approximately the temperature of recrystal-lization. The damping remained at a low value until grain growth was well under way and then it increased rapidly with increasing grain size. Köster and Rosenthal2 continued the work in greater detail. They pointed out that the damping decrease does not correspond to the hard-ness drop but occurs at a lower temperature, suggesting that the relief or redistribution of internal stresses has a large effect while the actual recrystallization effect is small. They also show the increase in damping at the higher annealing temperatures. Their curves are reproduced in Fig. 1.

Commercial production of heavy minerals from plant tailing streams is undergoing study by Syncrude Canada Ltd. When tar sand from an open pit mine is processed and upgraded to synthetic crude oil, heavy minerals can be recovered from the extraction circuit and can be upgraded to provide concentrates of zircon and titanium minerals. The titanium minerals concentrate, consisting of a mixture of ilmenite, leucoxene, and rutile, can be utilized as recovered or can be upgraded to synthetic rutile. With the construction of further synthetic crude oil plants in Western Canada a large reserve of heavy minerals will become available for production.

IN a recent study1 of the evolution of engineering education 1870 was taken as the initial point, as it is said to mark the transition from the poineer era in American engineering education to an era of rapid growth and consistent development. Prior to the founding of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1824, West Point Military Academy was the principal source of formal engineering training. In 1849 Rensselaer revised its program on the model of the leading French technical schools. Lawrence Scientific School was estab-lished at Harvard and Sheffield Scientific School at Yale in 1847. The University of Michigan pioneered in en-gineering instruction in the West, offering its first course in 1853 and awarding its first degree in 1860. Other important steps in -the progress of engineering education were the founding of Columbia School of' Mines in 1864, the opening of Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1865, and the founding of Cornell Uni-versity and the Thayer School of Civil Engineering at Dartmouth in 1867. From its organization in 1852 until 1871 the Ameri-can Society of Civil Engineers was virtually the only national society of engineers. In 1871 the American Institute of-Mining and Metallurgical Engineers was founded, to be followed later by the Mechanical En-gineers in 1880 and the Electrical Engineers in 1884. This expansion and diversification of the engineering profession was paralleled in the colleges, and by 1885 the plan of different curricula in the major branches of engineering was soundly established.

THE methods of handling the oil output of the mid-continent fields are not unlike those practised in other oil fields of the United States, and it is not expected that this paper will present any entirely novel ideas. Some features of the practice of handling this oil may be of interest, however. WOODEN CAGING TANKS Practically all of the oil sold to pipe lines and other purchasing agencies throughout the Mid-continent field is gaged from wooden tanks. Steel gaging tanks are slowly coming into use, and are preferable in many ways-leakage and evaporation are reduced, and the strapping and recalculation of capacities are unnecessary. The wooden tanks are slightly coned to facilitate tightening the hoops. The-sizes in, common use are 250, 500, 800 and 1600 bbl. The number and the capacity of the gaging tanks upon any producing oil property depend upon its production, and the facilities for disposing of the output. The 1600-bbl. size was the most common in the Cushing field, particularly during the period of flush production. The tanks are distributed over the leased premises in groups of two, three, and four tanks each, and these are filled from flow tanks, or through direct pipe connections with the heads of the wells. Flow tanks are merely temporary reservoirs to facilitate the transfer of oil from the wells to the gaging tanks. They diminish fire risk,, and are considered indispensable on small producing properties where .water is pumped with the oil, as they permit the refuse and water to settle out before the production is run to the gaging tanks.

ThE materials used in this investigation were furnished by the Aluminum Co. of America and consisted of high-purity alurhinum (99.995 pct) and two aluminum-magnesium alloys containing approximately 2 and 5 pct Mg. The compositions of these alloys are listed in Table I. The materials were received as hot rolled 3/8-in. diam rods and were made from the same heats as the materials which were previously used in this laboratory.'j3 The rods were cold swaged to 1/4-in. diam by 1 in. long, and then had two parallel flats machined over the gage length 0.085 in. apart. The test bars were annealed for 10 min at 700° F, and strained 1 pct in tension at room temperature. They were electropolished (80 pct acetic acid; 20 pct perchloric acid, 70 pct concentration) at a temperature of 60°F at approximately 20 v. A grid, transverse or square, spaced 0.2 mm apart, was impressed by rolling a fine threaded screw (128 threads per in.) across the flat surfaces. The depth of the grooves was less than 5 p. For final annealing and grain size control the specimens were enclosed in aluminum foil and sealed in Vycor tubes. Annealing conditions varied from 1 hr at 700° F to 5 days at 1050° F, depending on the alloy content, to give for most of the specimens a final grain size of about 1 mm. This treatment was followed by electropol-ishing as described above. For the test series presented in Figs. 4 and 5 round specimens were used instead of flat ones, and fine machining marks served as marker lines instead of the impressed grid lines. Electropolishing was omitted. The major advantage is that the spacing of the machining marks is only about 1 u as compared to the 200 u of the impressed grid lines, permitting higher precision in strain measurements. Unfortunately the strain annealing necessary for grain size control also resulted in some preferred orientation of the grains. The preferred orientation of three arbitrary specimens was measured by X-ray diffraction methods and the averaged results are shown in Fig. 1. The possible effects of the preferred orientation on the test results will be discussed later. The testing temperatures were 410°, 515", 725", and 940° F, with one exception in the case of the 5.1 pct Mg alloy. Since the solubility limit of this alloy is 520°F, a test temperature of 545°F was cho-se sen instead of 515°F. The selection of the test temperature was based on two considerations: 1) at 900°F and above, extensive grain boundary migration made it more difficult to measure grain boundary sliding; 2) at 400°F and below, there was so little grain boundary sliding that it was again difficult to make precise measurements. The stress was chosen to give a creep rate of approximately 2.7 pct per hr in connection with Figs. 2

The normal method of preparing metallic alloys for commercial use involves the preparation of a melt containing the given components in the chosen proportions and allowing the homogeneous liquid mass to solidify in a mold of the desired form. The solidification is frequently accompanied by a segregation of the alloying elements in different parts of the casting. When the segregation is occasioned primarily by marked differences in density of the solid and liquid phases, it is termed "gravity" segregation. When the segregation conforms to a selective freezing in harmony with the teachings of the equilibrium diagram of the alloy system—i.e., the lower melting phases are concentrated in the regions of the casting last to freeze—it is often referred to as "normal" segregation. However, in many cases the lower-melting part of the system is concentrated in the parts of the casting first to freeze and the result in this case is termed "inverse" segregation. To complete the terminology of the subject, normal segregation in a single phase is usually called "coring" and the word will be used in that sense in this paper. Inverse segregation, particularly when the liquid phase is exuded or sweated out on the surface of the casting, is sometimes called "liquation." Unfortunately, some ambiguity has arisen from the use of this term and it is perhaps advisable to confine its use to the dictionary definition; namely, "The separation of two phases by heat sufficient to melt one but not the other." The gravity and normal types of segregation are both well understood and to some extent, are controllable by taking advantage of the most favorable cooling rate for a given casting condition. Inverse segregation has received considerable attention from several investigators but none of the theories offered seem to account in a convincing way for the many examples of this type. The observations made in the present work on segregation in single crystals, and in some other castings, tend to support one theory of the mechanism of inverse segregation and definitely to

There is a growing interest in the possibilities presented by the manipulation of metal powders, which justifies an attempt to summarize their character and potential value. A summary of this kind presents an opportunity for making a classification of metal powder products into several general types. Our present knowledge of the finer and more abstract aspects of many of the principles involved in metal powder technique is extremely limited. Any conclusions as to the ultimate value of the process will, therefore, for the present at least, be of doubtful value unless they are substantiated by its products. The number of such products is increasing. A study of their diverse and unusual characteristics; an examination of the methods by which they are made, and a consideration of the reactions that take place during their fabrication, in so far as we can define them, should afford as good an evaluation of this interesting development as it is possible to make at this time. A critical study of this kind results in a formidable list of special attributes, which apparently are characteristic of applied powder metallurgy. A comparison of these special effects with the end products and well defined limitations of the melting and casting process indicate that often they may very well be considered as being special advantages. They are subject, of course, to certain not as yet so well defined limitations of their own. Based on current products only, a necessarily condensed summary of the more striking special attributes of the metal powder process follows. Manipulation of Highly Refractory Metals The powder process presents a means of manipulating highly refractory metals, which cannot be cast and formed in the usual melting and casting process. Tungsten, molybdenum and tantalum are the classic examples of the adequacy of the metal powder process for meeting unusual conditions of this character. During the recent great depression in iron, little has been done in the magnetic separation of iron-ores; and previous to the present decade the art was in its infancy, so that there were few, if any, successful separators on the market, and but scanty practical data could be obtained as to the industry itself. Moreover, the recent development of the great Mesabi Bessemer beds, coincident with the intense depression in business, has discouraged active attempts to solve the problems presented in the crushing and separation of the refractory magnetites of the South. Experiments have been carried on, however, upon a practical scale in separating these ores magnetically, at the well-known Cranberry mines, in Mitchell county, N. C., with results which are encouraging. The magnetites of the Blue Ridge, in the South, have been known, and the soft ores of the region have been used in Catalan forges, since very early times. The original settlements in East Tennessee were made along the Watauga river by Daniel Boone, William Bean, John Sevier, and other stalwart pioneers; and this valley lies parallel with the " Cranberry " lead, which is undoubtedly the most celebrated and the most extensive deposit of workable magnetic ore in the Southern States. The evolution of the modern blast-furnace from the embryonic stages of comparatively few years ago, has been the work of wide praetiee and experiment. That much is still to be desired, the experience of every furnace-manager mill testify. Mr. Walsh's paper on "The Irregularities of the Blast-Furnace Process, and a Practical Way to Avoid Them" (Trans., xv., 419), proposes a new solution of the problem of interior lines, and one that has given rise to not a little speculation and controversy. The investigation described in this paper was undertaken to test experimentally the theory of Mr. Walsh as to maximum reducing capacity. Briefly explained, Mr. Walsh's views (outside of his claim for increased efficiency due to having the bosh wholly within the meltingzone) are, that a furnace of contracted stack and throat, on his lines. may equal in product one of considerably greater cubical capacity. The explanation offered for the theoretical greater capacity per cubic foot of his furnace is, that the increased tension of gases caused by passing through the small area mill promote transpiration, thus facilitating reduction and permitting more rapid driving. This alleged relation will appear from a hypothetical case in which a furnace, A, constructed on Mr. Walsh's lines, has but 1/x of the cubical contents of a furnace, B, of modern type; the two being equal in height. DURING the past three years the Surface Preparation Committee of the American Mining Congress Coal Operators' Committees has been collecting data on dewatering and drying washed coal, and on screening coal in representative plants in the Eastern and Central bituminous fields. Because of wide variations in bed moisture, such data can be compared only after deducting the bed moisture. It was found that practically every company used a different routine for moisture sampling and determinations. Some reported the moistures as total moistures, others as surface moistures, cur-dried moistures, or oven-dried moistures. For most of the reports it was necessary to esti-mate, from a consideration of the bed moisture and other data available in a given case, corrections to be made in order to obtain surface-moisture figures as a common basis for comparison. At any plant, and regardless of bed moisture, the percentage of surface moisture remaining in a product when the dewatering, or a given stage of the dewatering, has been completed, is the real measure of what has been accomplished. The descriptions and data given with Fig. 1 show that surface-moisture figures show relationships that would not be shown by total moistures. Therefore bed moisture should be deducted, or, if more practicable, the surface moisture of the. products should be meas-ured direct. A preparation engineer finds one per cent, or even a part of one per cent, of surface moisture a very important consideration in the results of his efforts to find the most effective and economical methods of reducing and controlling the surface moisture in his products within the required limits. Therefore it is important for him to have accurate measurements of surface moisture with minimum uncertainty as to whether they some-times include less than the surface moisture and at others all of the surface moisture plus an unknown part of the bed moisture.

OF the many items of information necessary to the successful management of the blast-furnace, few are more important than knowledge of the location and movement of the stock: line:—whether the furnace is full and has been kept so; whether the stock is settling regularly or slipping; and, if slipping, how often it has slipped, at what times, and how far at each time. To obtain these data, a man is sometimes stationed at the top of a pair of mechanically-filled furnaces, sim-ply to watch and gauge them by hand in the old-fashioned way. A more recent practice is the suspension of test-rods from ropes leading over pulleys to the ground-level, where the ropes are mound on small drums with graduated peripheries and provided with crank-handles, whereby the skip-man or some other person can quickly and conveniently gauge the position of the stock-line in the furnace. I believe the credit for this great improvement belongs to Messrs. McClure $ Phillips of Sharon, Pa., who were, as far as I know, the first to apply it, and who have a patent for it. The valuable indications gained by application of the Uehling pyrometer to the down-comer are not to be ignorcd; but the information thus furnished is somewhat indirect, and there is no scale for the translation of " top-temperatures " into " feet down." Moreover, this apparatus, as a whole, is delicate, and the cost of installation and maintenance is high. If the record furnished by the Uehling pyrometer is not in the most desirable form, the test-rods, on the other hand, give no record at all, except through the memory or notes of a man who, to say the least, is not gauging continuously, and who may omit to report an improperly low stock-line, if it be due to a fault of his own.

TROUGH washers were among the earliest methods used for concentrating ores; they are referred to by Agricola about the middle of the sixteenth century as already being used while the hand- operated jigging sieve had only recently come into use. For cleaning coal the trough washer apparently was first used in France and Belgium about 184.1. The early trough washers were intermittent and the refuse at least was shoveled out by hand. The invention of a continuous jig washer, by a Frenchman, Berard, in 1848, acted as a stimulus to coal washings in jigs and retarded progress in trough washing in the nineteenth century. Chapman and Mott 1 describe a number of trough washers developed in England and on the Continent from 1850 to 1900, such as the Bell and Ramsay, Ramsay, Bell and Green, Wunderlich, Scaife, McLellan, Lodge, Elliott, Blackett, and Murton. The later of these removed the refuse mechanically, either intermittently or continuously, but in ways that interfered with stratification. THE RHEOLAVEUR A Belgian engineer, Antoine France, is responsible for the development of means to remove refuse materials continuously from a trough washer, while preserving stratification and preventing the loss of coal with the refuse. The methods and equipment devised, which have become known throughout the world as rheolaveur, were initiated at the St. Nicholas mine near Liége, Belgium, about 1912. This installation consisted of two units to wash 20 to 8-mill. (3/16 to 5/16-in.) and 8-mm. to 0 (5/16-in. to 0), each having only two superimposed inclined troughs. The first few "Rheo" boxes on the top trough removed refuse directly and the remaining Rheo boxes discharged impure refuse to the lower trough for rewashing. On the lower trough the first few boxes removed refuse and the following boxes removed a middling product used for boiler fuel or other purposes. The overflow of both troughs was joined to form the washed coal product.

A pressure fall-off test on the injection well of a forward combustion project may permit us to calculate the distance to the burning front. In the mathematical description and analysis of test data, we have considered the effect of temperature on the thermodynamic properties of reservoir fluids. The temperature distribution predicted by Chu' for a combustion wave has been used in analyzing a field test. Numerical solutions were obtained by simultaneous solution of the flow equation, the continuity quation and the equation of state. Although this analysis conccntrated on isotropic systems, the results can be extended to systems having directional permeability. INTRODUCTION Conventional pressure fall-off tests have been used extensively to determine reservoir characteristics in gas- or water-injection projects.- such tests consist of injecting fluid into the formation at a constant rate until steady state is nearly achieved, then discontinuing injection and measuring the bottom-hole pressure as a function of time. A plot of pressure vs the logarithm of time (measured from the instant of shut-in) yields a smooth curve characterized by three distinct regions (Fig. 1): Region I reflects the permeability alterations in the vicinity of the wellbore; Region II reflects the reservoir characteristics further away from the wellbore; and Region 111, the characteristics in the displaced fluid bank. The curves in Regions II and III are straight lines! the slopes of which are proportional to the reciprocal of the flow capacity of the formation behind and ahead of the interface as shown by Eq. 1, respectively:

Cominco American has operated the Magmont Mine for 16 years as a traditional open stope room and pillar mine. Diminishing ore reserves and the discovery of high grade ore zones over 90' in thickness caused consideration to be given to hydraulic sandfilling as a method of ground support to increase pillar extraction and mine life. This paper will review the results of sandfill testing. Plans for underground experiments, and operational plans for the future will also be discussed.
