"When hard times strike in the mining cycle, sites tighten their belts and focus on lowering their unit costs. Lower unit costs can be achieved by reducing expenditure, increasing production, or by a combination of both. Faced with these requirements, site personnel must turn to areas where they can focus their effort for maximum return. For many sites, both in Canada and overseas, focusing on improving flotation cell maintenance is one of the areas where gains can be made for minimum outlay. Due to resource limitations and/or lack of equipment understanding, maintenance on many sites is only conducted on a reactive basis, once equipment fails. This paper will promote the idea that mineral processors should become more familiar with their equipment so they can ensure that the plant’s ability to produce is not compromised. By better understanding the flotation equipment and ensuring the critical components are maintained, it should be possible to unlock value in an operation. Flotation equipment inspections will be discussed in detail, including key items to look for during these inspections. Potential approaches for predicting wear and change-out time for flotation equipment components will be also demonstrated. An example of one approach used at a South African nickel site will be given.INTRODUCTIONWith metal prices decreasing and operating costs rising, concentrator operators are looking for ways to improve their bottom line. Lower unit costs can be achieved by reducing expenditure, increasing production, or by a combination of both. To meet the expectation of shareholders, mineral processors must turn to areas where they can get the best return for their efforts. One area where there is a large opportunity for improvement is in the maintenance of flotation equipment.On many mine sites, both domestically and around the world, it is quite common to see the philosophy applied of repairing equipment only once it has failed. Though some sites have advanced enterprise management systems and monitoring programs, in the authors’ experience, the decision on flotation equipment maintenance is rarely made on a proactive basis. Two common trends that are evident in the mining industry are that operations are under pressure to keep the plant producing, and maintenance managers generally have very strict budget targets to meet. In addition to these factors, few sites have a good understanding of the financial implications of running with worn or broken flotation equipment. Knights, Jullian and Jofre (2006) summarize this situation well, stating that the lack of correlation between some commonly used maintenance performance measures and key business drivers can lead to maintenance being seen only as a cost center (that needs to be reduced) rather than a tool for productivity improvement."

The recent evolution of the piling market clearly shows a growing demand for screw piles with soil displacement. The recently developed Omega Screw pile ful-fill these new expectations, combining the advantages of vibration-free systems and the behaviour of a displacement pile. The paper describes recent experience and new applications with this very promissing pile. Full-scale load tests were carried out in different countries as U.K. or Sweden. A very attractive and innovative piled embankment is also described, using geogrids in order to transfer the loads from the superstructure to non-reinforced Omega-piles.

Rockbursting around underground excavations continues to be a core risk for many deep mining operations. Numerous advancements in mine design, preconditioning, monitoring, mining equipment, exclusion zones, and ground support have significantly lowered the risk to mine workers. As mining continues in deeper, more challenging environments, a multitiered approach to rockburst risk mitigation, starting with mine design, is required. Both the overall mine sequence, for example, avoiding converging mining fronts, and local design “stick handling” can play an important role in risk reduction. Rockburst case studies dating back to the late 1990s up until 2024 are used to highlight risk factors and risk mitigation (tactical and strategic). Examples from several deep hard rock mines are used, generally in high horizontal stress fields (k ratios 1.5 to 2), and strong brittle rock (> 200 MPa unconfined compressive strength). Mining induced stresses as well as high in situ stress due to depth are discussed. The context is Canadian mining, which typically has highly mechanised operations, large openings and equipment. Examples from a narrow vein mine and shaft sinking are also given because neither environment is simple to mechanise, highlighting the need for other risk mitigations. A “sieve” analysis based on mine incident reports is used to show how a multi-tiered risk management plan can lower exposure to violent ground failures. A few incidents still make their way through the “sieve,” indicating a need for further improvements. Thoughts on future/ current developments, and their strategic importance are given. Ground support is the last line of defence. The proliferation of multiple styles of yielding tendons and support systems has made many choices available to rock engineering professionals. Despite the increased availability of dynamic ground support components, there are still difficulties getting clean load transfer to bolts, determining support demand, monitoring loss of capacity over time/mining, and evaluating true system capacity. Virgin development in deep high stress brittle rock can result in high strainburst exposure prior to any stoping operations. The mining process must reduce worker exposure to unsupported rockmasses. Successful preconditioning in a shaft sinking operation, the use of high early strength shotcrete, and mechanised equipment are also discussed.

In order to overcome our reliance upon foreign energy sources for both crude supply and finished products, we must realize the goals proposed by Project Independence. In general this involves expanding production of existing and new oil, gas, and coal resources, utilizing and improving nuclear technology and the developing of new energy sources such as solar, geothermal, oil shale, tidal, wind and stimulation techniques. There is a continuing debate, both in the scientific community and the consuming public as to the potentiality of nuclear power generation being cost effective and environmentally and safety conscious. The development of new sources of energy does not occur overnight; it is rather a continuing effort in time and money to achieve the goal of providing energy to an ever increasing demand. The public has been accustomed to the availability of energy whenever and wherever it was needed. The era of "energy gluttony" has begun to fade into the realm of "energy awareness". Unfortunately, it required the action of another country to bring the picture that has been discussed many times in the past by energy suppliers into correct focus. Nevertheless, the public responded by conservation efforts to reduce energy wastefulness. Still, the demand for foreign importation of energy supplies is on the rise. What is our recourse? The largest known unexploited energy resource available in the United States is our coal resources. Moreover, the Department of the Interior has noted that 63 counties in Montana, Wyoming, and the Dakotas hold 60% of the nation's least expensive strip minable coal. This western coal is the most abundant and least costly Fossil Fuel in the United States. It is acknowledged that western coal is an important input in meeting the energy needs of our nation.

A significant portion of the piling industry has long felt relying on soil setup to gain the required capacity is a complexity that would rather not be dealt with. Instead, the pile are driven to the required capacity on the initial drive and the potential gain of capacity due to soil setup is simply considered an added bonus or safety factor. There appears to be an attitude that if one did not put in the energy required to develop the full capacity on the initial drive, then one should not expect to gain anything from Mother Nature for free. However, substantial savings in time and materials can be realized by properly accounting for setup. This paper will show the impacts and ramifications this rationale can have on required labor and material costs and illustrate a case history with significant soil setup and the savings realized on a project currently being constructed.

Many accidents occur in the mining industry as a result of the instability of material during handling and processing operations. Accidents due to dump point instability at stockpiles, and at spoil or waste piles, for example, occur with alarming frequency. Miners must be trained to be better aware of these hazards. Information on safe working procedures at stockpiles and surge piles is provided. Mine operators must review their training and operating procedures regularly to ensure that hazardous conditions are avoided.

A laboratory investigation was carried out on the characterization and beneficiation of sillimanite ore. Petrographic analysis indicated that the ore consisted of massive elongated sillimanite grains in a matrix of hematite, garnet, feldspar and silica. A procedure for estimating the percentage of sillimanite was developed using float-sink and magnetic-separation techniques. A liberation study was carried out to determine the level of size reduction required to achieve sufficient liberation while ensuring that gravity concentration techniques would be applicable. Laboratory testing was performed on the liberated ore to investigate the applicability of using wide-angle dense-medium cycloning to upgrade this ore. Initially, medium-only tests were carried out using various size distributions of magnetite and ferrosilicon as the dense-medium solids to evaluate the effects of operating conditions on medium segregation. Depending on the medium solids and operating conditions, either positive of negative differentials (difference between the relative densities of the underflow and overflow streams) were obtained. Based on these results, separation tests were performed to process nominal -1.2-mm sillimanite ore. The results indicated that sillimanite concentration could be obtained using a medium relative density that was much lower than would typically be used in a dense-medium cyclone separation.

On the more important mines it is almost essential to have a general plan of the surface. A special feature of this plan should be the indication thereon of a suitable arrangement of contour lines, either wholly over the surface of the property or at parts where may seem most useful. The importance of having these contours marked on the plan will be best appreciated by the engineer, in selecting the best available site for a proposed new plant, in locating a tramway, in connecting the surface with the underground workings to the best advantage, or in solving many similar problems that come within his province. The closer the contours are together vertically the better, the limitation being the trouble and expense of getting them on to the plan. They may range from five to fifty feet apart but a distance of ten feet will be found, in most cases, to be the most useful.In deciding the datum level from which these contours are to be measured, it is best to depart from the ordinary sea level datum, and use instead the highest available point on the property. This datum will be called zero and all levels will be reckoned so many feet below it; thus by a contour marked 160 on the plan, it will be understood that the level of the plane of the contour is 160 feet below the highest available point on the property. This system of measuring levels downward is readily suggested from measuring the depths of shafts from the brace or of excavations from the original surface.

"This paper presents a case history of evaluating the stability of a distressed earth bund and rectification measures carried out. A 5.45 km long, 7m high earth bund for drinking water storage was constructed in Andhra Pradesh. During construction of the bund following were observed – (a) a longitudinal crack at the downstream side (b) Bund on the downstream side along the crack settled to a max of 700 mm and (c) downstream rock toe level area raised by heave up to 175 mm. Investigation of the events made important contributions to the fundamental understanding of the behaviour of large earthworks of this type. It was found that the variation in subsoil strata was not addressed during the execution.After careful evaluation, stone columns were recommended as a suitable ground improvement technique. Stone columns were used as a reinforcement to improve the shearing resistance of foundation and in turn ensure stability. By using and applying advanced geotechnical engineering analysis tools and modelling techniques, earth bund and its foundation was analysed and examined against failure by slope instability. Stone column design was carried out using in-house computer program GEOSTONECOL and stability of earth bund was analysed using TALREN software. Earth bund construction was completed after ground improvement and is performing satisfactorily.INTRODUCTIONIn order to supply water during summer season, Government of Andhra Pradesh decided to construct a 7m high and 5.45km long earth bund summer storage tank. It was one of the largest earth bund summer storage tanks in whole of South India at the time of its construction. During construction, the earth bund has undergone sudden distresses. Investigation of the series of events occurred during construction has made important contributions to the fundamental understanding of the behaviour of large earthworks of this type. This paper presents the reasons for earth bund failure, slope stability assessment of the distressed earth bund and recommendation of stone column as a suitable ground improvement remediation technique.DESCRIPTION OF STUDY SITEThe characteristics of the original construction are briefly described as follows. A shallow cut-off trench was excavated below existing ground level at the centreline of bund as shown in Fig. 1. Below the base of the trench a cut-off grout curtain was installed. Upstream and downstream shell earth filling was carried out using Clayey Sand ‘SC’ type soil. At some locations, bottom of cut-off trench has reached as deep as 12m from the existing ground level."

An attempt is made here to collect together various reports and publications that are based on research supported all or in part by Contract No. H0155008 for the past two years. The subject matter deals primarily with the excitation, transmission, and reception of electromagnetic waves in mine environments. This contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines with the Office of Telecommunications supports the efforts of James R. Wait (Principal Investigator and Consultant to OT), David A. Hill (Co-Investigator), and various associates within the Boulder scientific community. The contributions of Samir F. Prior to 1911 the literature on melting brass by electricity consisted entirely-save for some suggestions made in patent literature but not actually worked out-of a few observations by farseeing men ' on the theoretical advantages of melting brass and other nonferrous alloys in electric furnaces. Roeber was the first to see and clearly state the possible advantages of the electric furnace in brass melting. The same factors tha.t make it desirable to manufacture special steels in the electric furnace rather than in crucibles, he declared, apply to brass as well. He pointed out the possibility of using larger melting units, of eliminating crucible cost, of readily controlling the purity of the product. and of nearly eliminating the loss of zinc. "The replacement of the • old crucible process is sure to come," he said; "perhaps it will come in two years, but it will, necessarily, in ten years .... The inevitable advance along this industrial line will have great influence in the metal world and will also provide, in large cities, a new kind of load for the central station." The years 1905 to 1910 may be termed the purely theoretical period of the development of the electric brass furnace, though the Conley furnace was tried out e:xperimenta.lly about 1910 and a few heats were made in an induction furnace. 2 In December, 1911, the American Chemical Society held a symposium on mineral wastes, at which Bassett s discussed the zinc· losses that attend making brass in fuel-fired furnaces.

This study investigated stratigraphic and structural causes of roof falls in room-and-pillar drift coal mines in nine mines in eastern Kentucky. A contract modification provided for remote sensing studies in the Dunkard Basin of West Virginia and Pennsylvania. Results of stratigraphic and structural studies of an earlier contract (H0133018) were applied to several new mines. It was found that similar rock sequences contributed to unstable roof conditions. Structure contour and isopach maps were found useful In projecting these trends together with fence diagrams. Using Landsat imagery, a direct relationship was found between lineament direction and the trends of rock jointing, roof fall zones, "snap top" zones and sandstone channels in the examples cited. It was found that, by analyzing lineament intersections, from 50 percent to 65 percent coincided with roof falls.

This report is one of a series based upon investigations made and being made within the Missouri River Basin in Montana by engineers of the Bureau of Mines , Albany Branch , Mining Division . These investigations are being made primarily to provide preliminary information to the Department of Interior agencies and to others concerned with planning the proposed Federal power developments within the Missouri River Basin. This report has been designed to permit public distribution of the factual data obtained . Virtually all known metallic -mineral occurrences and some nonmetallic mineral deposits within Fergus County were investigated in 1948. The investigations cannot be considered complete , however , because some long inactive mines or prospects may have been missed . Most of the old mine and prospect openings now are caved ; many are completely inaccessible . Many of the claims located years ago have been abandoned ; others have been relocated under different names and ownerships . Because of such conditions , much of the information regarding their development and operation necessarily has been obtained from available Federal and State publications , supplemented by information provided by owners and local residents .

"The Vanuatu island arc and its adjacent back-arc basins form part of the southern New Hebrides subduction system in the southwestern Pacific Ocean within a triangle defined by the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and Fiji (Meffre & Crawford 2001). The back-arc region east of the volcanic front is characterized by three structural depressions namely Vate, Erromango, and Futuna (from N to S), also known as the Coriolis Troughs. Earlier studies of lava compositions reveal the occurrence of highly evolved alkali-rich dacites as well as ankaramite basalts within the individual troughs (McConachy et al. 2005).Here we present the first mineralogical and geochemical analyses of hydrothermal fluids and precipitates (sulfides, sulfates, Fe-oxyhydroxides), sediments, and volcanic rocks, sampled during the "Coriolis Volcanism and Vents" (COVOLVE) cruise SO229 in July 2013 aboard the German R/V Sonne. The samples were retrieved during several ROV Kiel 6000 dives directly from the newly discovered active vent sites at the neovolcanic Nifonea Ridge, and from multiple sites at water depths ranging between 200 to 2800 m within the Vate and Futuna Troughs as well as from the shallow water Epi Caldera NNE of the Coriolis Troughs (Fig. 1)."

Coastal and marine mines affect the seabed?s biological resources, eg fisheries, when large volume wastes such as tailings are placed on the seabed, and by the extraction processes from marine mining. Worldwide monitoring of such effects for the past 30+ years now provides information to describe Best Practice design, construction and monitoring procedures. The critical environmental factors for submarine tailings placement (STP) are the selection of an appropriate deposition site and discharge depth, the deposition rate of the tailings, and the speed of biodiversity recovery to a sustainable ecological succession. These should be predictable at new sites using current modeling and experimental procedures. Prediction procedures are still needed to minimize potential destabilization of deposited tailings, and consequent biodiversity recovery setbacks. Comparable environmental information is needed from marine mining sites.

Land rehabilitation at Golden Cross is reviewed, 8 years after mine closure in 1997/98, from the perspectives of a Peer Reviewer (land rehabilitation) and a Regional Council Officer (Resource Consents compliance). Land rehabilitation items we discuss include: management of restored pastures, native plantings (on-site riparian and block plantings and off-site environmental riparian enhancement plantings), wetlands (on-site tailings lake and sediment ponds littoral zone plantings, and basement of the open pit; and off-site wetlands enhancement plantings), pine plantations on-site and on surrounding land, stabilization of the Tailings Lake Embankment (landslide) and Open Pit capping, capping of acid-mine-rock, stability of discharge channels, buildings and amenities, public access for recreation, educational uses, and future management of the site. Pest control has helped to conserve the rare and endangered HochstetterÆs (Leiopelma hochstetteri) and ArcheyÆs (L. archeyi) frogs, and a regionally significant stand of rare swamp maire (Syzygium maire) has been conserved and fenced.

The use of electronic detonators to improve fragmentation is becoming universally accepted. However their use in limiting peak particle vibrations levels is still in its infancy. Most of which is anecdotal, in that few actual scientific studies have been carried and published. This paper details the research work carried out at a limestone quarry in the County of North Yorkshire in Northern England. Here a series of blasts were carried out some used non-electric detonators whilst others used electronic detonators. The majority of blasts were carried out at the same burden, spacing and deck charge weight loadings. Initially, the key variable was the difference in detonator type and then leading on to using the electronic detonators at specific exact different detonator timing intervals. Later the study was extended to include double row as well as single row blasts.

Anglo American Platinum has adopted a strategy of best practice principles (BPP) for sampling, mass measurement, analysis, and metal accounting for more than a decade now. When new plants are designed, the most suitable sampling equipment and sampling protocols are implemented and material flows and plant layouts are designed around sampling strategies. A few years ago, a crushing plant for a high-grade matte stream was commissioned. The design called for the high-grade material to be crushed to 95% passing 2 mm, and the design allowed for a single-cutter primary Vezin sampler taking increments from a gravity flowing stream at regular intervals while filling a tanker for pneumatic offload at the base metal refinery. This was a single point of sampling and analysis that would measure the wanted output from the smelting complex and the input to the refineries. In addition, the design incorporated the functionality to collect increments in an ?interleaved? fashion from the Vezin sampler for internal precision checks. The metal accounting strategy for Anglo Platinum involves the ongoing measurement of all inputs, outputs, and stock levels for all operations for platinum group metal (PGM) and base metal (BM) content. Included are yearly stocktakes, usually done on 1 February, across the smelters and refineries (at least the base metal refinery). In the accounting period immediately following the introduction of the new crushing and sampling facility, a trend was developing whereby the absolute difference between the physical stock and theoretical stock (PGMs predominantly) increased for the two respective sites on an ongoing basis. The smelter showed an increase in physical stock compared to the theoretical stock (sender) and the base metal refinery showed an increase in theoretical stock against physical stock. Because of this anomaly, an additional stocktake was held in September for the period in question, and it was confirmed through the physical stock measurement results that the PGM accounting problem was indeed pointing towards the evaluation of the high-grade matte stream. This paper showcases parts of the process that took place to explain the poor accountabilities for the two sites. Previous results from the sampler ratification process (of the interleaved sampling design) were reanalysed, a physical inspection was carried out on the sampling system again, and the sampler performance was monitored (quality control parameters) for the period. From these investigations, it was found that airflows inside the Vezin introduced the sampling bias. A change in sampling protocol was introduced, as well as certain physical changes to the sampling equipment, to eliminate the airflow and thus the bias conditions significantly. The accounting period that followed the phased upgrading process showed that the accounting between the smelter and base metal refinery had been restored to within statistical limits (difference between physical and theoretical stock below 5% relative to theoretical stock). To reduce concentrate dewatering and drying costs, the Concentrator Division at Phelps Dodge Morenci, Inc. investigated available filtration technologies. Numerous methods were explored, including: drum, disk, belt, pressure, hyperbaric, and ceramic media filtration. An economic evaluation of the individual filtration technologies indicated the advantages of ceramic media filtration for Morenci concentrates. This paper discusses the technological development culminating in the first full scale application of ceramic media disk filters in North America. Low moisture contents are obtained at high production rates and greatly reduced operating costs.

It is proposed that a waste rock dump be constructed on slopes consisting of soft colluvium and weathered Chim Formation mudstone at the Porgera Gold Mine, in Enga Province, Papua New Guinea (PNG). Geolog- ical, geomorphological and geophysical investigations were conducted in support of geotechnical studies to assess the physical character of the 6km2 site. Geomorphological studies focused on the extent and nature of colluvium cover and landslide activity. Detailed ground traverse mapping resulted in classification and delineation of eight terrains and seven material types. Seismic refraction and resistivity profiling, combined with drilling, provided subsurface data. Results were presented as standard profiles, coloured contoured sections and plans. Subsurface features, including deep colluvial channels, buried cliffs, slump blocks and buried alluvial channels, were identified. Results of the combined investigations allowed designers to model the colluvium/ bedrock surface and identify critical areas of deep, mobile colluvium and weak bedrock. A design approach was developed which accounted for the morphology of landslide systems and distribution of colluvium types.
