"Guideline Augered Cast-In-Place (ACIP) Pile Specification and Commentary11.0 GENERAL1.1 SCOPEThe Pile Contractor shall furnish all labor, materials, tools and equipment necessary for furnishing, installing and testing Augered Cast-in-Place (ACIP) piles as shown on the Contract Drawings and as specified herein.ACIP piles are commonly referred to by several other names. Some of them are trademarks or service marks owned by Foundation Contractors and some are names that try to describe the installation process. The term “cast-inplace” is sometimes replaced with “cast-in-situ,” especially in Europe. Some common names are Auger Cast Piles, Intruded Mortar Piles, Augerpress Piles, Augered Pressure Grouted Piles, AugerPile Foundations, Continuous Flight Auger (CFA) Piles, Grouted Bored Piles, Augered Grout-Injected Piles, Drilled or Augered Uncased Piles, and Uncased Cast-in-Place Concrete Piles. To avoid confusion, ACIP pile will be used exclusively herein.1.2 PILE CONTRACTOR QUALIFICATIONSThe ACIP piles shall be installed by an experienced Pile Contractor who upon request of the Engineer shall submit evidence of successful ACIP pile installation under similar job and subsurface conditions, including a job supervisor who shall have a minimum of five years of method specific experience.The proper installation of the ACIP piles is dependent upon the procedures used by the Pile Contractor’s field representatives and equipment provided. The Pile Contractor’s personnel responsible for the installation should have relevant experience with the auguring and pumping equipment, experience placing piles under similar site conditions (including restricted headroom if appropriate), in similar subsurface conditions, as well as experience handling the special grout mixes, admixtures, etc."

Tan investigation described in this paper deals with the development of high-temperature alloys of the Konel series over a considerable period of time at the Research Laboratories of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Co. The word "Konel" has been coined to designate a class of alloys which are essentially nickel-cobalt-iron with other elements added, usually in small quantities. Most of these alloys contain titanium, usually about 2.5 per cent. The main consideration related to strength at high temperatures but the thermionic characteristics of the alloys was also of considerable importance. It is, however, with the mechanical properties at elevated temperatures that we are herein concerned. Much attention has also been devoted to their age-hardening characteristics. There is little need to stress the utilitarian aspect of this subject, as it has been discussed frequently. Alloys exhibiting superior properties at normal or elevated temperatures rapidly find many suitable applications. There may be some question, however, as to what constitutes a "superior alloy, " or an alloy that may have good service possibilities at high temperatures. The problem is complex and various means have been employed to predict the useful life that may be expected of a material. In recent years the "creep limit" has been used as the best means of evaluation. Such tests necessarily are prolonged and hence collection of data is very slow. In a general survey of many alloys therefore the creep test is not desirable and recourse must be had to much shorter time tests in order more rapidly to select alloys which appear to show promise. For this reason the present survey has been made using the high-temperature tensile test and a bend test developed by Howard Scott.1 In the tensile test the conditions have been standardized for all tests, so that values obtained are at least comparable, one alloy with another, although the absolute values recorded merely indicate the mechanical properties at the given temperature under a definite rate of loading.

In open stope mining borehole deviation is one of the main factors affecting the blasting results. Though previous research has identified some actual deviation patterns, these studies are unable to relate the hole deviation pattern with the blasting results and therefore it is not possible to modify the design or take remedial measures based on the prediction of the blasting results. An alternative to the conventional method for borehole surveying is the in-hole probing techniques. With their inherent errors, it is important to evaluate these surveying systems under conditions of different mine sites. The lack of available assessment methods has limited the application of these techniques. In this paper some of the characteristics of the actual hole deviation pattern are discussed based on data from surveying production holes in six stopes. A method of predicting the blasting results is proposed by considering the borehole deviation pattern. Based on the prediction stope design can be modified or further surveying is carried out to improve the blasting results. The tolerable error is introduced to relate the surveying error with the drilling pattern and therefore it is possible to assess various in-hole-surveying techniques.

Knowing of your keen interest in this subject I consider it a great privilege that your program committee has asked me here to discuss the crushed stone segment of our industry approach to this important part of our daily business lives. As you are aware, crushed stone operations are present in almost every segment of the country wherever aggregates for construction projects are required. The tonnage of crushed stone produced is second only to sand and gravel - another source of aggregates - and this together with sand and gravel amounts to over half of the tonnage of all mined products in the United States. What is unique about this industry that will be of interest to all of you in analyzing how they have approached Public Relations? The fact that it is so wide-spread is of course obvious, but perhaps a more significant nature of this segment of the mining industry that has brought it more in the limelight of public interest and on a larger scale is the location of a large part of the quarries quite close into the urban area and population centers where you have the greatest demand for aggregate products.

THE method of electrical mapping of oil structures to be described possesses certain limitations, as well as certain definite advantages. It, in common with other geophysical methods, is not a panacea for the solution of all subsurface geological problems. It operates on differences in electrical conductivity of the geological strata, whereas the other most-used methods operate on (1) differences in magnetic properties, (2) differences in gravimetric properties, or (3) differences in seismic properties. This modification of the resistivity method is therefore able to obtain subsurface information under conditions not favorable to the other methods mentioned. Where the other methods have been employed with ambiguous results it may act as a complementary method.

Reference should be made to the Index.A Brief History of Royalties1In the early days of mining in Canada, the tendency was to sell a claim for cash and to move on, using the stake to look for and stake more prospects. As prospectors became more sophisticated and Canada’s North opened up, the market for properties and the number of mining properties available increased dramatically. Speculation and the practice of consolidating several small properties into one large holding entity became common. In “hot” areas, the speculators2 could far outnumber the prospectors, many of the former having little or no prospecting expertise but lots of market and promotional savvy. However, to consolidate a number of small parcels into one large project can be expensive, and many of the parcel owners became interested in keeping a share in the project, rather than giving up everything. Speculators who were trying to consolidate small parcels wanted to minimize cash payments to parcel holders (usually they did not have much cash and preferred it flowing in their direction rather than away from them). Accordingly, non-cash transactions were developed to meet the aspirations of both owners and speculators."

This digital peer reviewed publication has been created as a vehicle for the sharing of technical information related to the science and technology of precious metals. Since 1976, the International Precious Metals Institute has championed the exchange of information of critical importance to the precious metals scientific and commercial communities through its various communications vehicles. This has included instructional videos, annual conference symposia, special topic committee meetings, regional seminars, and professional and student achievement awards. Due to the breadth of important topics related to all aspects of precious metals, it has been the vision of the IPMI to provide a publication available to the general public that would become a key source of pertinent topics containing high quality publications by experts in their fields of study. Historically, the IPMI has attracted world renowned experts in many fields (including Nobel Laureates Henry Taube, Ei-ishi Negishi, Robert Grubs, Professor Ben Feringa, and David MacMillan) in the dissemination of discoveries, inventions, and industry proven practices. Such information has a total value greater than the sum of its parts as seemingly unrelated innovations from distinct focus areas can be adapted to solve problems. If it does, frontal displace- ment occurs in the laboratory experiments, and oil INTRODUCTION Thc puposes of this paper are to present theoretical and experimental evidence for occurrence of macroscopic instabilities in displacement of one viscous fluid by another immiscible with it through a uniform porous medium and to compare available experimental data with some predictions of a theory of instability developed by the first author. The instabilities are referred to as macroscopic in the sense that spatially quasi-sinusoidal, growing fingers of the displacing liquid are formed, the width and peak-to-peak separation (wavelength) of which is large relative to a characteristic length of the particular permeable medium such as grain size. Visual models of two kinds have been used to obtain observations: displacement of oil by water-glycerine solutions through the flow channel formed by closely spaced parallel plates and displacement of oil by water with and without initial interstitial water through unconsolidated glass powder packs, employing the technique of matching indices of refraction. In all cases we have observed macroscopic instabilities or fingers under conditions predicted by the theory to be favorable for their occurrence. The phenomenon discussed here is not the production of streamers due to gross inhomogeneities such as permeability stratification of the porous medium. It is our object to show, on the contrary, that a quantitative prediction of finger spacing is possible in a porous medium known to be macroscopically homogeneous and isotropic throughout. The importance of the phenomenon in its influence on the configuration of oil and water with respect to oil production behavior was noted earlier by Engel-berts and Klinkenberg' who coined the term "viscous fingering". The Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral investigation of the 177,000-acre Secesh study area; most of the area had been proposed as wilderness. Bureau personnel mapped and sampled several hundred mine and prospect workings; 1,715 rock, soil, and placer samples were taken during the investigation. The study area is centered about 25 mi east-northeast of McCall, Idaho, in the Payette National Forest. Five mining districts extend into or are adjacent to the study area. There have been more than 3,000 mining claims located inside the study area, 884 are current. In excess of $17 million (historical value) in placer and lode gold has reportedly been produced from the Warren district alone. The study area contains gold, silver, copper, lead, zinc, tungsten, and antimony. At least six properties that would be in the proposed wilderness contain gold resources; more than 18 million tons averaging 0.038 oz/ton gold have been identified. Additional resources may be located at 4 other localities. The 4th of July mine is currently producing gold/silver/lead ore. Similar resources may be located on at least 3 other properties. Placer samples from the study area contained up to 0.34 oz gold/yd3 ($120/yd3). The samples are representative of relatively small occurrences and do not constitute resources; small quantities of gold may be recovered by recreational placer miners.

The U.S. economy grew moderately in the second quarter of 1985 with real gross national product (GNP) recording a seasonally adjusted annual growth rate of 2.0%, up from the 0.3% growth of the previous quarter but significantly below the 7.1% growth of the second quarter of 1984 (table I). Personal consumption expenditures grew 5.3%, with purchases of durable and nondurable goods rising 7.4% and 5.1 %, respectively; nonresidential and residential fixed investment--the two components of fixed investment--grew 11.8% and 5.6%, respectively; and Government spending rose 3.6%. However, these gains were tempered by a major decline in the growth of business inventories (from $19.1 billion to $8.3 billion) and the continuing growth of the net export deficit (from -$28.4 billion to -$33.3 billion). While the high value of the dollar compared with other currencies has been a major cause of the expanding trade deficit, its value, as measured by the monthly Federal Reserve Board (FRB) multilateral trade-weighted dollar index, has declined over 17 index points from its February peak to 140.94 in July. The July dollar value was still high historically. The rate of inflation, as measured by the fixed-weighted price index for GNP, remained low at 4.1%, down from 4.3% in the first quarter, and employment continued to grow at a rate sufficient to keep up with new additions to the labor force. Civilian unemployment has remained steady at 7.3% over the past 6 months. Industry Statistics The FRB recently revised its index of industrial production and changed the base year from 1967 to 1977,1/ The revised total index shows a 0.1 % higher annual growth rate between 1967 and 1984 than the previous index. In the slower growing or declining industries, such as metal mining, primary metals, and fabricated metals, however, downward revisions in the indices and rates of growth have occurred. The previous and revised annual rates of growth between 1977 and 1984 for several of the sectors of interest to the mining industry are shown in table 2.

The uppermost subsoil profiles of the Bangkok plain can be divided into four layers, namely: weathered clay, soft clay, stiff clay, and dense sand layers. The soft Bangkok clay is a normally consolidated marine clay with built-up preconsolidation effects and overlain by a weathered crust. Up to the present, a large number of full-scale tests on excavations and pile foundations has been made by numerous investigators. Based on these results, the available data are reviewed and evaluated. The results show that for test excavations, the excess pore pressures were overpredicted by the existing theories. The vertical and lateral movements in the excavations can be predicted by the bilinear and non-linear finite elements using appropriate modulus values. Relationships among probability of failure, safety factor, and safety margin of the excavation were also obtained. In the case of pile foundations, good agreement between the measured and predicted ultimate pile capacities were obtained for long piles. The adhesion factors ranged from 0.4 to 1.0 while the average skin friction factor was found to be 0.33. The ultimate capacity of the pile was also predicted successfully by using the Dutch cone data. For lateral deflection of piles, Davisson and Gill's theory predicted well in the low deflection zone while Poulos' theory agreed well in the high deflection zone. From the probabilistic analysis of ultimate pile capacity, the probability of failure was related to the central factor of safety. I. INTRODUCTION. THE facts is presented in this paper, based chiefly on recon¬naissance made, during the summer of 1903, by myself and my assistant, Mr. R.. C. Brooks, cover practically all that portion of Texas lying east of the 99th meridian. The work was undertaken for the University of Texas Mineral Survey, and was to have been extended over the entire State, but the sudden termination of the survey prevented even the official publication of the results already obtained. Most of the mineral resources of Texas were fully treated by the First Geological Survey, but the clay-industry was tit that time little developed, so that only a few scattered notes concerning it are to be found in the Survey reports. The extensive exploitation of the clay-deposits, however, has emphasized their commercial importance, and has also made accessible many facts of exceptional interest concerning their geologic conditions. The erection of new plants for the utilization of clay-products is usually preceded by more or less prospecting, which, by reason of the scarcity of outcrops, and the geologic and topographic conditions of eastern and southeastern Texas, is often slow and difficult work. This is especially true in the Tertiary and Pleistocene areas, where the structural conditions much resemble those of the Atlantic coastal plain, the deposits being mostly lenticular in form, and surrounded by beds of sand. II. GENERAL GEOLOGY OF THE CLAY-DEPOSITS. The accompanying sketch-map, Fig. 1, shows the location of nearly all the deposits examined, their relation to the geology of the State, and the type of clay found in each. The geology is based on the published work of Hill, Cummins, Tail, Adams, Hayes and Kennedy, but the boundaries have unfortunately not been determined over the entire region covered by the map, and, in many areas, are only approximate. It will be seen that the clay-deposits range from Carboniferous to Pleistocene in age, the older deposits being found in the northwestern part of the area, while those of Cretaceous and Tertiary age lie to the east, southeast and south. The Pleistocene clays are found in part in a belt along the coast, and in part along many of the larger rivers, where they often underlie extensive terraces.

There is nothing unorthodox in the situation in which the gold miners find themselves today. With wages and the prices of all materials required in the production of gold at the high levels characteristic of a period of prosperity, phony or otherwise, and with shortages of both men and machinery to contend with as well, the spread between the returns in paper dollars that must be accepted for gold in the United States and the cost of producing it is rather painfully small for most producers. The massive B(bcc) — am (fcc) transformation in Cu-Zn alloys has been studied isothermally by pulse-heating the retained ß phase from room temperature to the reaction temperatures. The transformation is found to occur only in the single-phase a region of the equilibrium diagram. The massive growth rate is of the order of 1 cm per sec and is constant at each temperature, usually after a delay time of some milliseconds. The delay time depends on the reaction temperature in C-curve fashion, while the growth rate increases monotonically with temperature over the single-phase range. The absence of isothermal massive transformation in the two-phase region does not arise from slow growth rates at such temperatures, but because the reaction cannot get started there. It is proposed that the massive transjormation initiates at small preexisting a particles which have rejected zinc into the surrounding 0 matrix. Only within the single-phase region can these particles consume the excess zinc during diffusion-controlled growth and thereby accelerate to the steady-state massive growth rate. The onset of massive growth marks the end of the delay time, and the growth rate then becomes interface-controlled. These isothermal transformation characteristics explain why the usual composition range for massive-kinetic studies by quenching is so limited. The same principles can be extended to more complex alloy systems by recognizing that the single-phase region in which the massive transformation can occur may not be stable with respect to phases not participating in the reaction. MASSWE transformations are now recognized as a regular class of solid-state reactions involving no compositional change (like martensitic transformations) and no shear displacements (unlike martensitic transformations). The name was first coined by Greninger1 in 1939 to describe the coarse grains of fcc a solid solution generated via a fast reaction from the parent bcc 0 solid solution in Cu-A1 alloys. However, some 9 years earlier, phillips2 had already described a similar transformation in the Cu-Zn system. The fact that the massive a formed as a single phase during drastic quenching from the 0 region of the equilibrium diagram signified that compositional changes were precluded. and the reaction was presumed to take place as in a one-component polymorphic transition by nucleation and growth. Phillips also observed that the occurrence of the massive transformation in the Cu-Zn system was extremely sensitive to alloy composition. For example. in a Cu-37.3 at. pct Zn alloy. the ß — am (am = massive transformation product) reaction was found to predominate and was not suppressed by iced-brine quenching from the 0 region. whereas at compositions greater than 38.3 at. pct Zn the massive reaction did not appear at all. Knowledge concerning massive transformations has bee11 substantially enhanced over the years by Massalski and his coworkers; an excellent summary of his papers and the current understanding of this type of reaction has been published recently by Barrett and ~assalski." he massive transformation product grows in roughly nodular form. often with irregular boundaries but sometimes with almost planar interfaces. The latter may have simple crys-tallographic indices relative to the 0 matrix. or the indices may be complex just as in the case of mar-tensites.'1 Little is known about the existence of orientation relationships between the massive and parent phases. A striking feature of massive transformations is that the massive units start almost exclusively at grain boundaries of the parent phase and frequently propagate on a broad front across matrix grains and grain boundaries of various orientations. Because of the rapid growth rate, it is thought that the interface motion is controlled. not by long-range diffusion. but by thermally activated atom jumps across the transformation boundary.

Coal mining in the United States established a good safety record in 1939. The death and injury rates per man-hour of exposure to risk were favorable compared with most previous years, and the number of persons killed or injured in proportion to the quantity of coal mined was also lower than in any other year for which figures are available. Moreover, productivity per man-hour was higher than ever before. The number of man-hours of work performed increased 9 percent over 1938, but there was a slight decrease in the number of men employed. Reports from operating companies showed 539,375 men employed during the year, and the period of operation averaged 179 workdays per man. Man-hours of work numbered more than 678 million. Accidents to the workers resulted in 1,078 fatalities and 54,015 nonfatal disabling injuries, causing disability of the employee for more than the remainder of the clay on which the accident occurred. For each million man-hours of exposure of the employees to mining hazards the fatality rate was 1.59 compared with 1.78 for 1938, and the injury rate was 79.65 compared with 82.61 for 1938. Production of coal averaged 0.661 ton per man-hour compared with 0.637 ton in 1938. The weighted average length of the workday was 7.03 hours or virtually the same as the previous year's average of 7.04 hours. Measured in man-hours, the average period of employment per man was 1,257 hours in 1939 and 1,147 hours in 1938.

The distribution of sulfur in iron was found to be dependent upon the time and temperature of the treatment as well as the chemical composition of the sulfide. With higher temperatures, the sulfide phase spreads more extensively between the iron grains. A complete network, however, does not form until approximately 1300°C (2372°F), ot which temperature the dihedral angle approaches zero. Silicon has little effect on this change. Aluminum, oxygen, and manganese all modify the temperature of sulfide network formation to a higher value. The microstructures which result and have significance in relation to hot-shortness are discussed. SULFIDE inclusions in steel were recognized by metallurgists before the turn of the century. Considerable attention has been paid to them, and numerous studies have been made on the working properties of steel as affected by them. It has been suggested that ho t-shortness of steel is due to the presence of an enveloping liquid sulfide film at the grain boundaries of the steel in the range of the hot-working temperatures. However, several facts have been observed in commercial steels which do not seem to be completely consistent with this explanation: 1) the frequent absence of continuous films of sulfide as observed under the microscope, 2) the absence of hot-shortness in some high sulfur and resulfurized steels, and 3) the limitation of hot-shortness to a definite temperature range. The role that manganese plays in steel to eliminate hot-shortness is well known, but the theory behind it is still under question. Moreover, the effect of de-oxidizers such as aluminum and silicon, and the effect of oxygen are still not clearly known. In this study, the effect of heat treatments and of additions of manganese, aluminum, silicon, and oxygen upon the distribution of sulfide inclusions in iron was investigated. Both the as-cast and the heat treated structures were studied, using microscopic and autoradiographic techniques. Part of the results were interpreted in terms of Smith's' concept of microstructure. The Upper Freeport coal in the Freeport and New Kensington quadrangles, Pennsylvania, varies from a bony streak to a thick coal deposit often exceeding ninety inches, the "Double" or "Thick Freeport". Distinctive basal partings, a central bone layer, and a canneloid top bench may be present. The appearance of a sandstone roof, sandstone rolls, and bony coal at the top of the main coal bench can be anticipated in thin Freeport areas when basal partings are absent. When the two basal partings are present, a shale roof is normal. These effects are correlated with the original topography upon which the coal was deposited. The original depositional high areas tend to coincide with present structural highs. Preliminary data indicate that coal quality, in part, is affected by the deposi-tional setting. In "high" areas, a tendency exists for the main coal bench to contain higher percentages of fusain and mineral matter. Within limits, some-what higher ash fusion temperatures appear to correlate with paleotopographic highs. As a result of these findings, critical examination of the paleotopography and related sediments is indicated in other areas and other coals. The Upper Freeport coal is quite variable both in thickness and composition in the Freeport and New Kensington quadrangles of Pennsylvania (Figure 1). The coal horizon in these quadrangles is marked either by a thin carbonaceous shale bed or by a single bed containing a variable number of partings (binders). The complex coal zone known locally as the "Double" or "Thick Freeport" contains the Upper Freeport Coal Bed at the base; but in addition, it has an overlying bone layer and an upper coal bed occasionally capped with a canneloid layer. The "Thick Freeport" often exceeds 90 inches in thickness, whereas the normal Upper Freeport coal usually varies between 34 and 50 inches.
