CAPTAIN JOHN H. BALLAMY John H. Ballamy, Captain on the Regimental Staff of the 103d Engineers, was killed near Fismes, on August 9, 1918. Captain Ballamy was born at Plymouth, Pa., in 1886 and graduated from the High School of that town in 1903. In the following year he began work as a coal miner, and at the same time began the study of mining engineering in the evening and any other spare time. He continued this diligent and energetic practice for many years. For sixteen years he continued in the employment of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad Company's coal mining department, first as a practical miner, next as rodman on the survey corps, of which he soon became chief, then draftsman and mining engineer in the company's office. In January, 1916, he was promoted to the position of district engineer in charge of mining engineering work. He became a member of this Institute in September, 1917. CAPTAIN JOHN H BALLAMY. Captain Ballamy's military experience began at the same time as his engineering practice. He was a charter member of Company A, Engineers, N. G. P., which was organized ten years ago. He saw service on the Mexican border as First Lieutenant of this Company, and remained in that position until November, 1916. In July, 1917, he was again called into service and was sent to Camp Hancock, Ga., with the 103d Regiment of Engineers. Before joining this regiment he attended a school for officers at Fort Sill, Okla., where he received special training in field fortifications. In December, 1917, he was commissioned Topographical Captain on the Regimental Staff, and in April, 1918, preceded his regiment by about six weeks to France, where he again attended an officers' training school. He rejoined his regiment on July 15, near Chateau Thierry and was killed near Fismes on August 9, 1918.

Several factors contributing to the loss of fibre during treatment are a function of the paragenesis of the veins. The occurrence, of magnetite from the cap rock within the veins prevents complete fiberization. There is a marked similarity between these veins and those in the Koegas-Westerberg area of South Africa.INTRODUCTIONAn investigation of the mineralogy of the Wittenoom Gorge crocidolite veins was undertaken in the latter part of 1962 at the request of the Colonial Sugar Refining Co. Ltd. It was anticipated that such a study might reveal the cause or causes of the lack of recovery of some asbestos during beneficiation. Some interesting features of the mineralogy and paragenesis of the crocidolite veins become apparent, but it is emphasized that the investigation is far from complete, as the study did not extend to the field occurrence.The samples examined were selected from the mill and from the untreated ore.GEOLOGICAL SETTINGWittenoom Gorge is situated on the Fortescue River in the Hammersley Ranges of Western Australia and is one of several gorges in these ranges, on the sides of which 'crocidoIite asbestos is known to occur. The Hammersley, Ranges consist essentially of a series of quartzites, shales, ferruginous quartzites and dolomites. These' rocks are part of the Nullagine Formation (Proterozoic) and are usually either horizontal or gently folded. In some 'areas small beds of riebeckite as well as crocidolite are known to occur interbedded in the sequence.Riebeckite is a monoclinic amphibole, the formula of which may be stated as Na2Fe2"Fe2" (OH) 2Si8O22, and crocidolite is a fibrous variety of this mineral. Flame cutting and welding is one of the major causes of fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines. On May 20, 2006, a flame cutting operation at the Darby Mine No. 1 led to an explosion that resulted in five fatalities. On January 22, 2003, another explosion caused by flame cutting at the McElroy Mine resulted in three fatalities and three serious injuries. On June 22, 1999, a flame cutting and welding operation at the Loveridge Mine caused a fire that resulted in sealing of the mine for an extended period. Finally, on March 19, 1992, an explosion at the Blacksville No. 1 Mine that was caused by welding resulted in four fatalities. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted a study on fires and explosions in underground U.S. coal mines that were caused by flame cutting and welding operations to determine the root causes of these types of fires and explosions. The methodology included interviewing mining personnel who perform flame cutting or welding operations in underground U.S. coal mines and visiting mines to observe these operations, and MSHA reports of investigations and accidents statistics were analyzed. The results were used to identify and compare differences between flame cutting and welding practices and techniques in small and large mines, Eastern and Western mines, low seam and high seam mines, room and pillar and longwall mines, and between experienced miners and new miners. As a result of this study, best practices and interventions were developed to reduce the number of fires and explosions caused by flame cutting and welding. This paper provides a summary of this work. In an inflationary environment the need for reduced cost is a daily concern of all industries. The Du Pont do Brasil "Expanded Pattern" method has proven to be an extremely effective means of reducing costs in mining, quarrying and construction operations. Over the past years much emphasis was placed on rectangular drilling patterns where the burdens are less than the spacing. The Expanded Pattern method combining rectangular and staggered patterns, was implemented in 1971 in Brazil after extensive trials in close collaboration with numerous explosives users and Du Pont do Brasil Technical Services Engineers. The best multiple row spacing-to-burden ratio (S/B) was demonstrated to be in the 2 to 5 range and the effective spacing to burden ratio (Se/Be) was found to vary from 5 to 11. These ratios are for the interior of the blast pattern and do not hold true along the front row of holes. Geological rock properties, hole diameter and inclination, explosives energy and loading density, explosives characteristics, blast pattern geometry, bench height and delay patterns along with type and size of digging, hauling and crushing equipment must all be evaluated for each and every operation. The integration of these interrelated parameters, together with sound blasting practices are the basis for the Expanded Pattern method. Color slides and documented case histories will be presented.

MINING operations in the Waihi mine began, under the present proprietorship in the year 1889. Previous to this, and as far back as the year 1880, the presence of reefs in the Martha Hill had been known, and surface working on a small scale had beencarried out, without any great measure of success. The only method of treatment in use at this time was the old system of light stamps, amalgamating tables and berdans, and recovery by this method being low, little margin for profit was left, so thatthe property in these days was not considered of great importance and work on the area was only carried on spasmodically by different owners.On the transfer of the leases to the present company, calcining, dry crushing, and hot pan amalgamation was adopted as the method of treatment, and this system was continued till the more modern cyanide process was introduced and applied. As themethods of treatment and gold-saving became more efficient with the application of more modern and scientific processes, the importance and future prospects of the mine became more and more pronounced, and mining on a larger and more comprehensive scale was gradually established.As in the case of ore treatment, mining methods in the early stages were not as far adv.anced as the adopted practice of today, and numerous shafts, levels close together in vertical height.

The article illustrates the Hydromill technology, as applied in urban sites, and its advantages in terms of quality of the end product, mitigation of the construction impact, and optimization of the logistics at the site. Also highlighted are the main features of the excavation equipment and slurry treatment plant. Two recent urban applications of this technology in Europe are briefly described, together with the forthcoming application to the Central Artery/Tunnel Project in Boston. Introduction The Hydromill technology has been used extensively in Europe in the last decade for slurry wall construction in urban environments. In Italy, this technology has been applied by Ing. Giovanni Rodio & C., Impresa Costruzioni Speciali S.p.A. in two large projects. The first project is the construction of Stations Darsena and San Giorgio of the first metro line in Genova. The second project is the "Cut-and Cover" tunnel for the railway link in Torino. Hydromill technology will be used for the construction of the Soldier Pile Tremie Concrete walls of the Boston Central Artery Tunnel Project, contract C14C2, Utility Relocation at Fulton Street.

Xstrata?s Lion Project is underway, with commissioning expected in the third quarter of 2006. The new smelter will utilize Xstrata?s patented Premus process, and the competitiveness of the Premus process is discussed.

Mineralogical analyses of carbonates in depyritized tailings and pyrite concentrate (from depyritization of the tailings) were completed as part of the tailings characterization for the Crandon Project, a massive sulfide deposit in northeastern Wisconsin. The mineralogical study was designed to determine the proportion of calcium and magnesium carbonates, and therefore the effective buffering capacity of carbonates in the tailings. The depyritized tailings are net acid consuming and will be stored in a surface tailings management area. The pyrite concentrate is net acid generating and will be used as backfill in the underground mine workings. The majority of carbonates in the depyritized tailings were ferroan dolomite containing 10 to 15% iron (by weight) and lesser amounts of siderite and magnesian siderite. The proportion of calcium and magnesium-rich carbonates corresponds to several independent tests of carbonate neutralization potential (CO3-NP) availability. The pyrite concentrate had less CO3-NP, indicating segregation of the carbonates during pyrite flotation. These carbonates reported higher iron contents, consistent with the relatively lower availability of CO3-NP in the pyrite concentrate.

"Peirce-Smith converters (PSCs) are extensively used in the copper, nickel, and platinum group metals industries. The typical converting operation involves lateral purging of air into molten matte through a bank of tuyeres. This blowing operation occurs at low pressure from the blowers, resulting in a bubbling regime that is considered inefficient from both a process and an energy utilization perspective. Inherent drawbacks also include recurrent tuyere blockage, tuyere punching, and low oxygen efficiency.Western Platinum embarked on a full-scale industrial evaluation of generating a jetting regime by using sonic injection. Prior to industrialscale tests, a numerical assessment to ascertain the feasibility of implementing sonic injection into a PSC was conducted. The work included flow characterization at high-pressure injection achieving sonic velocity at the tuyere exit. The 2D and 3D simulations of the three-phase system were carried out using the volume of fluid method together with the RKE turbulence model to account for the multiphase and turbulent nature of the flow.This paper discusses the key findings in understanding plume extension, velocity distribution, shear wall stress analysis, and phase distribution characteristics in the system. Plant trials are also discussed with reference to the commercial aspects of a full-scale implementation of sonic injection in the smelter."

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has collected pillar and span data at 34 stone mines in 10 states to develop pillar and roof span design guidelines for underground stone mines. Pillar, floor and roof conditions each contribute significantly to the overall mine stability. The roof may be stable for a century, or it may appear to be stable but fail with little warning. Clearly, an assessment of the mine roof is critical to the safety of these operations. However, up until now, the assessment of the mine roof came primarily from exposures in roof falls or portal areas. This provides only limited information, and a more proactive approach is needed to assess changing mine conditions. A separate effort was undertaken to examine the roof structure with the use of a borescope. Numerous physical and geologic roof structures were observed with a stratascope/borehole video camera. The objective of this work was to develop a technique of assigning numerical values to features seen within the mine roof and apply those values to formulate a roof stability evaluation. Such features as changes in color, grain size, and general lithologies are readily observed. Minor structures in the rock, fossils and fractures are also readily identified. Each feature may have a variable and site-specific impact on roof quality. A number of mines were visited and a series of holes were borescoped in each mine. The features identified in the roof were classified and potential for roof damage related to each feature was assessed. A process is presented that relates the structures and their locations to provide a numerical value, or roof quality index that can be used to assess roof stability.

The development of a noise attenuated compressed air driven fan is described. The fan, which employs the jet reaction principle, possesses blade extension pieces which penetrate into an acoustically treated annular chamber. The dominant noise source, namely the air jets, is thereby partially suppressed. In addition, the increased moment arm of the jets leads to an improved propulsion effect which contributes to the improved aerodynamic performance of the unit.A typical measure of the improvement of this type of auxiliary mine ventilation unit is a 4 per cent increase in efficiency and a 10 dB (A) drop in sound level for a fan duty of 0·5 kPa and 1600 litre/s. This degree ofattenuation corresponds to at least halving the loudness level, a subjective noise measure.

Before 1995, the smelting process at the Kennecott Utah Copper Corp. (KUCC) smelter consisted of Noranda reactors and Pierce-Smith converters. When considering expansion, it was decided that the existing process would not lend itself to a program geared toward processing the total output of copper precipitate and copper concentrate from KUCC mining and concentrating operations. During 1989 and 1990, several smelting options were evaluated. The final selection was the Outokumpu flash smelting process, coupled with the new Kennecott-Outokumpu flash converting technology. Facilities were designed and installed to process 1 Mt/a (1.1 million stpy) of copper concentrate, with the ability to expand to 1.2 Mt/a (1.3 million stpy). The smelter facility that used the Noranda technology was shut down in May 1995. The flash smelting furnace operation began in June with the flash converting furnace start-up a few weeks later.

Mr. H. W. GEPP said he desired to bring particular attention to this paper. The underlying intention of the Development and Migration Commission when the paper was prepared was to place at the disposal of Australian miners and metallurgists the story of the development of tin metallurgy as it had been advanced in other countries, particularly Great Britain. They had very considerable resources of low-grade tin-bearing metals in the eastern coast of Australia particularly, and they need not anticipate that tin was going to remain at the extremely low price at which they saw it to-day. The Commission felt that it was most desirable to place 'on record, and make easily available, the story of the treatment of comparatively low-grade tin ores in other parts of the world.Arrangements were made that the technical staff at Australia House, in conjunction with Mr. H. S. Elford; should collect this information so that in due course, when Australia awoke to an interest in low-grade deposits, of which there were many throughout Australia, this story would then not,have to be gathered from other areas and other places of the world. The -paper was a contribution which would turn out to be of very great value. He suggested to the younger members that this thorough contribution could be made the subject of study so that they would be ready to assist in the developments which must come. Mr. WM. APLIN said there was one point in connection with the paper upon which he would like to speak. While at Mount Morgan he had occasion to test some highly pyritic tin ore by flotation, with a view to separating the cassiterite from the pyritic mineral.Instead of accomplishing that, it was discovered that it would be possible to eliminate as much as 50% of the total weight of ore in the form of a pyritic flotation concentrate, which would contain...

The use of Tunnel Boring Machines (TBMs) for tunnel construction of long tunnels in the Andes of South America has been of mixed success in the past due to a variety of reasons and key lessons can be recognized. A review of past TBM tunnel projects in the Andes has unveiled some interesting findings for different TBM tunnel approaches with both world records of progress as well as nearly in-completed projects with machines being abandoned. Key considerations for the use of TBMs for tunnel construction in the Andes include geological issues; (faults, rock type, rock strength, rock abrasivity, durability, groundwater inflows),depth of cover and the potential for overstressing/rockbursts, site access and terrain, portal locations, intermediate access possibilities, minimum tunnel size, support requirements, contractor and labour experience, and project schedule demands. TBMs offer highly recognized schedule benefits(high progress, no concrete lining) for a project if intermediate access adits are limited as well as hydraulic benefits for water conveyance projects. Minimum specifications for TBMs can be easily developed to suit the unique requirements of any project so as long as all factors are carefully considered. The overall conditions and factors associated with some projects may suggest that it is not appropriate to use TBMs due to a perceived high risk. Finally, access for geotechnical investigations by drilling in the commonly steep terrain of the Andes is typically difficult and often not impossible. Alternative approaches for geotechnical investigations for TBM tunnels including comprehensive mapping, high-resolution airborne electric-magnetics for delineation of possible fault zones, and rock block sampling is presented and discussed.

"Tintaya’s basic production line is copper concentrate, which has an important gold content. The process used is flotation; the objective of the metallurgical department is to obtain the best results in the copper recovery without neglecting the gold, using very specific reagents. Copper recoveries are considered high, nevertheless every day emphasis is placed upon increasing those recoveries. Regarding gold, optimum recoveries could not be achieved with flotation; and implementation of a gravity circuit was considered.According to microscopy studies, the coarse and very fine grains of gold in native form are lost to tails. The native gold due to its high specific gravity is concentrated at the underflow of the cyclone, remaining in the circulating load of the circuit. It reaches three times the concentration compared to the head grade entering the ball mills. This re-circulation generates very fine and laminated gold particles inside the ball mill, passing to the classification stage making a short circuit to the overflow of the cyclone.The very coarse gold particles as well as the thick flakes of gold do not react favorably to the conventional flotation process; thus studies that have included gravity separation have been conducted to increase the gold recovery. Part of the research included concentrating tables, jigs, and Knelson Concentrators. The Knelson Concentrator proved to be the best selection in terms of metallurgical performance and recoveries considering the throughput and operation conditions of the Tintaya Plant.The gravity concentration circuit with the Knelson Concentrator was commissioned in BHP Tintaya in October 1998, as per the flowsheet shown later on. Presently the global gold production surpasses any estimated expectations.Present efforts are directed towards showing the evaluation and optimization of the different parameters that govern the performance of the Knelson concentrator, as well as illustrating the difficulties and successes throughout the operating period.In the first year of operation 200 tons of gold concentrate have been produced with an average concentrate grade of 320 gramdton, having paid back in full the cost of the automated KC-XD- 48 Knelson Concentrator, the peripheral equipment, and the cost of the installation."

Industrial grinding machines used in the mineral processing industries are mostly of the tumbling mill type. These mills exist in various types: ball, rod, pebble, autogenous, and semi-autogenous. Balls and rods are traditionally media shapes used in the tumbling mills. In resent years, as an alternative to balls, grinding charges with various shapes are being used. Cylpebs are slightly tapered cylindrical grinding charges with length equaling diameter, and all the edges being radiused. Cylpebs of equal diameter and length have 50% greater surface area and 45% greater weight than balls of the same material. In addition, they have 9% higher bulk density than steel balls, or 12% higher bulk density than cast balls. An important advantage of cylpebs over balls is that cylpebs produce narrower granulometric distribution due to their shapes. However, some discrepancies were found in the literature regarding the milling performance of cylpebs in comparison with balls (Chi, 2004). In recent studies, Chi (2004) has provided detailed information on cylpebs and has compared these to balls in relation to media mass, size distribution, surface area, and input specific energy. Ipek (2006) has investigated the effects of cylpebs and balls with equal mass and surface area on the breakage rate of quartz, using cylpebs and balls separately. Similarly, Lameck and Moys (2006) have investigated the effects of balls and worn balls on breakage rate of material using worn balls as grinding environment. However, no study has attempted to investigate the effects of grinding environment other than balls on the brekage distribution. As indicated by Prasher (1987), the breakage distribution function is independent of the following variables in ball mills: hold-up (Mika et al., 1967; Kelsall et al. 1969), mill speed and ball load (Herbst and Fuerstenau, 1972), media load and ball density (Kelsall et al., 1973), mill diameter (Malghan and Fuerstenau, 1976), and powder charge (Shoji et al. 1980). The aim of the present paper is to compare the effects of cylpebs and balls on the breakage distribution function of quartz with respect to same mass and same surface area. BACKGROUND Comminution as a rate process is called kinetic approach. Studies on the kinetic approach are reviewed by Oner (2001). Oner states that grinding kinetics are based on studies by Kolmogorov in 1941 and that Robert (1950) is the first to suggest this approach. Later, Melzak, Loeveday, and Reid have improved the grinding kinetics equation; and, Austin and Lynch have conducted two basic studies on the analytical solutions of these equations. Considering the results of studies comparing the size reduction mechanisms, it has been accepted that breakage constitutes of two operations. These two basic operations, first defined by Epstein (1948), are those of selection of material for breakage and the distribution of breakage material to particle sizes smaller than the initial size (Lynch, 1977). Epstein defined the two operations as: ? Pn(y), the probability of breakage of a particle size in the nth step of the breakage process. ? F(x,y), the cumulative distributions by weight of particles of size x<y arising from the breakage of a unit mass of a size y. Probability of breakage is called a selection or a breakage-rate function (Si). Characteristics size distribution after breakage is called a breakage distribution or appearance function (Bi,j). Due to the difficulties in representing particle size distributions mathematically and constantly, the batch equation based on particle size fraction is suggested. Thus, as is the case in breakage distribution and specific rate of breakage, the breakage parameters were defined by batch grinding experiments conducted in laboratories (Oner, 2001). When effective breakage occurs in the mill, the breakage of material with single feed size fraction usually fits first order grinding kinetics and the specific rate of breakage values can be calculated through the slope of semi-log plot. The values of the breakage distributions are deduced from the size distributions at short grinding times where there is mainly size 1 material breaking and only small amount of smaller sizes to rebreak (Austin et. al., 1984). B values can be calculated by using BII. [ ] where j is the top size of the charge, Pi(t) is the cumulative percent undersize of i th size interval at the short grinding time which gives no more than about 30% broken out of the top size interval. Cumulative primary breakage distribution, Bi,j, is also defined in an empirical form by [ ] where xi is the top size and Bi,j is the weight fraction of primary breakage products. The parameters F, ? and ß define the size distribution of the material being ground. On plotting size versus Bi,j on log scale, the slope of the lower portion of the curve gives the value of ?, the slope of the upper portion of the curve gives the value of ß, and F is the intercept as in Fig.1. Our paper attempts to summarize the various approaches used to recover Indium from these by-products. Some comments on production and price trends are included as well as our views on future availability.

INTRODUCTION South Coast Water District (SCWD) operates the Beach Interceptor Sewer Tunnel(BIST) in South Laguna, Orange County, California between Monarch Beach and Aliso Beach (Figure 1). The 10,200-foot long BIST houses a 24-inch gravity Techite sewer pipeline critical to the SCWD Sanitary Sewer Collection System. The original tunnel and sewer pipeline were constructed in 1954 and the sewer line was replaced in 1974.Periodic inspections by sewer pipeline maintenance crews documented deterioration of specific intervals of the tunnel. Rotting timber supports and rock falls in the tunnel as a result of the deterioration were endangering the sewer pipeline and a 731-foot section of tunnel located at Thousand Steps Beach was determined to be in immediate need of repairs. SCWD and consultants Hatch Mott MacDonald (HMM) and Tetra Tec prepared a Work Plan for emergency tunnel stabilization and pipe protection measures that was implemented in January 2007. Normal access to the beach and the section of tunnel requiring repairs was limited to public stairs referred to as Thousand Steps and, therefore, all materials and equipment needed for the work were transported to the beach by ocean-going landing craft. Additionally, the emergency repairs had to be completed without taking the pipeline out of service. Numerous environmental, logistical and operational requirements had to be overcome to complete the challenging emergency repairs. GEOLOGICAL SETTING The Laguna Beach area is located in the Peninsular Ranges of Southern California. The project area is located on the southwest flank of Niguel Hill along marine wave-cut cliffs and slopes. The tunnel was excavated in the San Onofre Formation, a marine deposit, characterized by abrupt lateral and vertical changes in lithologies that vary from boulder to cobble and gravel size breccias to medium coarse sandstones with gravel, sandy claystone and siltstone. The interval of the tunnel that required repairs is located within the San Onofre breccia, a moderately-to-well cemented, poorly bedded to massive unit with angular to subangular boulder and cobble sized clasts of schist. The sandy silt matrix of the breccia is composed of quartz, feldspar and schist grains (Figure 2). GENERAL TUNNEL DESCRIPTION The approximately 6-feet high by 6-feet wide 10,200-foot-long BIST was hand mined in 1954 at the base of the coastal cliffs. Primary access is through twenty-one access adits from public and private beaches. The tunnel is located in an easement that extends beneath private property with residential structures situated 50 to 80 feet above and horizontally in close proximity to the tunnel alignment. The following brief paper is intended, to apply to the concentration of the silver-lead ores at Broken Hill, New South Wales, generally, but more particularly to the process as applied to the ores in the Block 10 mine. The attached plans are similar inmany respects to those prepared, recently for the Block 10 company.Most of the information here given is already well known to those members who are conversant with the concentration practices of this field, but it is the writer&apos;s object to give just a few of those figures which he found difficult to obtain when first engaging in practical work. The points then to determine are:-(1.) The quantity and cost of water available for steam-making and ore-dressing purposes.(2.) The most convenient site for the mill.

This study aimed to produce magnesium oxide (MgO) particles with different properties from dolomite ore using an experimental procedure comprising four stages: sample preparation (S1), HCl leaching (S2), precipitation (S3), and calcination (S4). Three different base sources (NaOH, KOH, and NH4OH) were used as precipitant in the third stage to obtain magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)2] from a leachate solution, which was obtained in the second stage. Next, Mg(OH)2 particles generated by different alkali sources were calcined at various temperatures from 600–1000 °C for different durations (1–5 h). The effect of these base types on the properties of each product was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and wet chemical analyses. The experimental results indicated that each product was identified as periclase (MgO) mineral, which was produced with a specific surface area (SSA) of 4.49–44.54 m2 /g depending on the production conditions. The surface roughness of the MgO particles increased with increasing calcination temperature. SEM analyses showed that MgO particles produced at a temperature of 600 or 800 °C were amorphous, indicating that the process was not influenced by the base type, but MgO crystals were smooth when the calcination temperature was 1000 °C. Finally, it was determined from all experimental findings that MgO particles produced via the addition of NaOH have superior properties (such as higher SSA and lower surface roughness) compared with MgO particles produced with KOH or NH4OH as the alkali source. These properties led to great improvement of its usability in industry.
