As a scientist and an engineer whose responsibilities include the consideration of air pollution and its control, I am frequently called upon to answer variations of two basic questions, These questions may I be set forth as: (1) How much air pollution does the coal industry cause? (2) How serious is the air pollution problem to the coal industry? At first these questions may seem elementary and almost trite, but serious consideration of them will show that they are technologically involved and I further complicated by the subjective base to which they must be evaluated.

Three electric arc furnaces (EAFs) were constructed by Union Carbide at Tubatse Ferrochrome (TFC) in1975. This plant was expanded to four furnaces at the East Plant in 1985 and the gas cleaning system was enlarged without taking flow dynamics into consideration. In order to improve competitiveness, TFC has increased furnace capacity, partially substituted coal for coke, and changed the charge mix. These changes increase the heat and dust load into the air pollution control (APC) system. TFC embarked on a project to improve the APC capacity by: ?Quantifying the required off-gas capacity ?Optimising the aerodynamic flow through the system by means of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) ?Converting the old Brandt Koyo top entry baghouses to bottom entry ?Upgrading the cleaning system ?Installing Gore-tex® ePTFE membrane filter bags The estimation of required off-gas capacity is traditionally done by rule-of-thumb methods such as specific extraction. A more elegant evaluation method was developed for simulating the effects of changes in charge mix on the furnace reaction gas volume and the APC system. Reaction gases are calculated by modelling the reactions taking place in the furnace and off-gas volumes are compared to both fan and baghouse capacity. This enables identification of bottle-necks in the off-gas system. CFD techniques were utilized to evaluate geometric imbalances and propose solutions to ensure optimal use of off-gas capacity. The system modifications were completed over several months and the modified equipment went into service in May2006.

1. Theory of Wet Dust Suppression Techniques Wet dust suppression is the utilization of a liquid for the control, reduction or elimination of airborne dust, or the suppression of such dust at its source. Effective control involves: a. The confinement of the dust within the dust producing area by a curtain of moisture. b. The wetting of the dust by direct contact between the particles and droplets of moisture. c. The formation of agglomerates too heavy to remain airborne, by combining small dust particles with each other and with the droplets of liquid. From the standpoint of economy, availability and safety, water is the ideal fluid. From the standpoint of effectiveness, however, it leaves much to be desired. As a result, a tech¬nique has been devised in which very small percentages of specially formulated dust control compounds are blended with water to greatly enhance its dust suppression qualities. The terms "dust control compounds, wetting agents and surface active agents" are frequently used interchangeably. Although dust control compounds represent a specific type of wetting agent, a great many wetting agents are far from satisfactory for dust control. "Wetting Agents" is a broad category which covers such items as emulsifiers, solubilizers, detergents, foamers, penetrants, thickeners, etc. Dust control compounds, on the other hand, are carefully formulated blends in which one or more special surface active agents have been incorporated.

A method of evaluating the possible effect of an industry on the environment is presented, and the method is illustrated by its application to a hypothetical problem. An analysis is offered based on an actual survey of four industrial sites in the Lydenburg area of the eastern Transvaal. The survey showed that there is a high incidence of potentially unfavourable conditions, and there is a distinct possibility that a topographically induced eddying motion will extend over the town and the industrial sites. This moving air could entrap air pollutants, resulting in high concentrations of pollutants over the town. It is concluded that none of the sites is suitable for industries that pollute the atmosphere.

A comprehensive study of the environmental conditions of the area affected by the Colfax and Cheswick Power Stations is of extreme importance to Duquesne Light Company. The residents in the valley where the two plants are located have complained for many years about the emissions from the Colfax Plant which is of the 1920 to 1930 vintage and which has a capability of generating approxi¬mately 200 Mw. They were extremely happy to hear that the Company had plans for shutting it down, however, they were extremely unhappy to hear that we were planning to build another even larger one to take its place in the same vicinity, namely the Cheswick Plant with a capability of 570 Mw. They had visions of a plant twice the size of the Colfax Plant and belching out twice as much smoke. A few of the citizens from that area were most vehement at the public hearings that were held by the Allegheny County Air Pollution Bureau for obtaining an installation permit. With two power plants already existing in that area (Duquesne Light Company's Colfax Plant and West Penn Power's Springdale Plant), the primary concern of the Allegheny County Air Pollution Control Bureau was that the Cheswick Station might increase air pollution levels beyond what they considered to be dangerous limits. It became very evident that the Allegheny County Air Pollution Control Bureau would be extremely reluctant to grant installation and operating permits unless they were satisfied that the new plant would not increase local pollution levels and that we were taking sufficient steps to monitor the emissions from our plants and also the ambient air in the general area. We concluded that an extensive air pollution monitoring program must be conducted in the area to determine the effects of the operation of our plants. Concern about environmental pollution goes back many centuries, but until recently most efforts to control it have been perfunctory and spasmodic, aimed largely at coal smoke and other visible pollutants. Air pollution is to a large degree a byproduct of our economic development, and scientific knowledge of the causes and character of such pollution is more extensive than the technology to handle the waste byproducts of our industrial civilization. The removal of all constituents foreign to the air from the effluents produced by an industrialized society is obviously impractical at this time. There is widespread difference of opinion regarding acceptable ambient air concentration levels for the Various pollutants produced by combustion processes, but there is basic agreement that the pollution of the atmosphere must be controlled and eventually reduced. The magnitude of the air pollution problem has been increasing rapidly because our expanding economy calls for an ever-increasing consumption of energy, and fossil fuels are a principal source of energy. For example, the consumption of electricity has been increasing at an average annual rate of approximately 8 percent over the last 10 or 1.5 years. Table 1 shows the estimated emission of the principal pollutants into the atmosphere in 1966. The approximately 90 million automobiles, trucks, and buses on American highways contribute the largest proportion of pollutants to the atmosphere, but that fact does not alter the growing problems of the coal industry. You will note that sulfur oxides, particulates, and nitrogen oxides are all products of the combustion of coal. Of these air contaminants, sulfur oxides are now receiving major emphasis in terms of research to develop effective means for control, Table 2 shows that the combustion of coal produces approximately 60 percent of the sulfur oxides discharged to the atmosphere. While the utilization of coal is the principal source of particulate matter, this is not considered as serious a problem as it was in the early part of the century because of technological developments that have produced sound methods for the removal of particulates from waste gas streams.

The highest recorded loss of life due to the collapse of mine workings occurred at the Coalbrook North Colliery in South Africa on 21st January, 1960. A total of 437 persons died when bord and pillar workings collapsed over an area exceeding one square mile The whole mass of strata from the 470 ft (143 m) deep seam to the surface being affected. Although the Coalbrook disaster was unique in its scale the problem of pillar failure, particularly in old workings, is by no means uncommon nor confined to recent history. Indeed, the collapse of large pillared areas was a regular feature of mining in the north of England in the early part of the nineteenth century. When a section of underground workings collapses, the air under the descending roof is compressed very rapidly. The pressurised air is dissipated subsequently at a rate governed by the leakage paths available. If the collapsing area is small, such as the case of a local fall of roof, then there will be little danger of an air blast. If, however, an extensive area collapses suddenly then the rapid compression of air will give rise to a pressure shock wave that will be transmitted through the remaining workings as an air blast. If worked out areas are connected to current workings via unstopped airways an air blast caused by pillar failure in the old workings will be extremely hazardous to personne1 and may cause extensive damage to equipment, perhaps even reaching to surface plant. At Coalbrook, the air blast blew out a wall in the surface fan house. Areas that are considered liable to sudden collapse may be isolated from current workings by the construction of stoppings. However, such stoppings must be capable of withstanding the 'hammerblow' effect of peak air pressures developed during the collapse. The work described in this paper was undertaken in order to determine the maximum air pressures that stoppings must withstand during a major pillar failure. The result has been a method of establishing peak air pressures that is quick and simple to use. Readers who are concerned primarily with the practical application of the method are advised to turn directly to the last main section of the paper.

In this work, a comprehensive field study was carried out to measure the background air quality status and identify the air pollution sources from opencast mines around a heritage site in India. Air quality modeling was conducted to envisage dust concentration due to existing and closed mines in the region. The air quality modeling exercise predicted that particulate-matter levels of PM10 and PM2.5 might increase in the ranges of 3.2 to 23.1 and 2.1 to 8.9 μg/m3, respectively, due to mining activities when some of the closed mines will be operated in the region without controlled emission. The predicted total PM10 and PM2.5 at the selected receptor locations were in the ranges of 86.39 to 194.89 and 34.82 to 99.55 μg/m3, respectively. Adequate measures were suggested to control air pollution from mining activities, and an intelligent dry fog system was designed to suppress dust emission efficiently from mineral processing plants and opencast mines. The developed system has special features for facilitating eco-friendly mining.

The main objective of this work was to quantitatively investigate exhaust emission levels, as related to maintenance (service) intervals, during the operation of diesel-powered equipment at an underground bauxite mine in Greece. Such emissions depend on a great number of parameters, including the type (technology) and tuning of the engine, the type of work performed as related to the engine workload, suggested maintenance intervals, the altitude, the temperature and the humidity of the atmosphere of the underground mine, the properties of the fuel, the operator's training and experience level. Necessary ventilation quantities were calculated based on exhaust gas concentration measurements, site specific relationships between pollutants and adjusted air quality indices. Diagrams comparing necessary and recommended air flow for several equipment groups featuring two engine types and for different maintenance intervals are presented.

This concern has manifested itself in four primary mechanisms of control -- (1) regulatory control through minimum standard setting by the passage of mine health and safety laws, (2) engineering control through design and operation of 'mines according to the best recommended practices, (3) medical control through periodic physical examinations, wearing personal protection devices, etc., and (4) legal and social control through workmen's compensation laws for occupation related health deterioration:-The respirable contaminants in mine atmo¬spheres are toxic and explosive gases, toxic and explosive dusts, diesel exhaust particu¬lates, radon progeny, etc. Perhaps the most important of all these and the most widely occurring in mine atmospheres is respirable dust, an inevitable product of fragmentation, a unit operation fundamental to all mining operations. In fact; the-most serious health hazard for workers in the mining and minerals processing industries is still the exposure to respirable dust, and solutions to the problem of respirable dust disease remain to be found.The 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act and its provisions for the respirable dust standards in underground coal mines are briefly reviewed. An overview of the research accomplishments in meeting the standards is presented. The current state of knowledge on the effectiveness of the standards and the new and emerging problems are discussed. A brief summary of the research programs of the Generic Technology Center on Respirable Dust is presented.In general, underground mines are becoming increasingly safe. As a result of strategic analysis in respect of the needs for air quality management a new advanced and holistic approach to air quality management process was introduced in the North West Province (NWP) of South Africa. The process is based on the principle of co-operative management. It involves both active participation of all Interested and Affected Parties (I&AP) and the holistic approach to solving problems with the underlying principles of shared ownership and sustainable development. The process consists of the followings phases: ? Industrial process quantification ? Quantification of impacts ? Formulation of the required control measures ? Definitions of certificate conditions ? Implementation of an adequate compliance management system at company level ? Ongoing co-operative air quality and system management with the strategic objective of continuous improvements The system has been successfully introduced in the North Province and proved to be an effective management tool and aids assurance of sustained environmental ability to cope with the pressure of industrial developments. The benefits and effectiveness are discussed using Hernic Ferrochrome as an example. Hernic Ferrochrome is one of the first companies, which successfully implemented this system.

Several heavy metal separation techniques are currently being developed for soil remediation at various Department of Defense and Department of Energy (DOE) Facilities. The majority of these techniques involve a wet process using water, PH modifiers or other compounds. The United States Naval Academy (USNA) has developed a dry process for heavy metal separation. The process uses air classification technology to concentrate the metal contaminant into a fraction of the soil. The advantages of this dry process are that it creates no contaminated by product and uses commercially available technology. The USNA process is based on using a Gayco-Reliance air classifier. Tests have been conducted with the system at the Naval Academy and the University of Nevada-Reno (UNR). The USNA tests used soil from the Nevada Test Site mixed with bismuth at a concentration of 500-1000 ppm. The UNR tests used soil from four DOE sites mixed with uranium oxides and plutonium at an activity level of 100-700 pCi per gram. Concentration of activities and volume reduction percentages are presented for the various soils and contaminants tested.

An air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) mobile system was evaluated for continuous stripping and recovery of cyanide (the AVR process) from process water at a gold plant site. The ASH unit performed exceptionally well as an absorber. HCN was removed from the gas phase in a single one second pass with an efficiency exceeding 99%. HCN concentration in the discharged gas phase was lower than 10 ppm, which provided for a safe working environment. The stripping efficiency, controlled by the Henry’s Law constant, exceeded 40% in one pass.

In this paper, an effort was made to get more in-sight about the parameters that can affect air sparging technique optimization. Numerical simulations were used in predicting the effects of different parameters utilizing Shell?s in house MoRes simulator. The case of using air sparging to remediate source zone is considered in this work. Different air injection scenarios using continuous and pulsed air injection techniques, with different frequencies and durations, were compared. The amount of MTBE mass removed from the saturated zone and arrived to the ground surface, through the vadose zone, was the main criterion while comparing different air injection scenarios. The simulations results showed that pulsed air injection is better than continuous air injection in removing the MTBE and that the longer the OFF time is the better the MTBE removal.

Jetbelt is the trade name for the air supported belt conveyor. It does not use troughing rollers. Jetbelt conveyors support the conveyor belt on a thin film of air. The belt rides in a steel trough which has small holes equally spaced along the bottom of the trough. Air comes through the holes under the belt, thereby supporting the belt. The air pressure is provided by a single centrifugal blower that creates very low pressure, between 249 Pa and747 Pa [10" and 30" water column], depending upon the tonnage being conveyed. The volume of air required ranges between .001415 m3/S and .00283 m3/S [3 and 6 CFM] per lineal foot of conveyor. Therefore, depending on tonnage being conveyed, a 304.8m[1000'] conveyor might require as little as 1.415m3/S [3000 CFM] or as much as 2.83m3/S [6000 CFM.]. (See Figure 1) Horsepower requirements can be less than troughing idler conveyors and considerably less than some other forms of bulk conveying. Savings are most significant in horizontal and down hill (regenerative) conveyor designs. Horsepower to lift material, of course, does not change.

Air tabling of zircon-rich non-conductor products containing quartz enables most of the fine quartz present to be rejected without a markedloss of zircon. The coarser quartz in the air table feed can be separated from the zircon by screening one or more air table products, the oversize products containing most of the quartz and little of the zircon. Air tabling, with or without screening, is more efficient than wet tabling alone for the removal of fine quartz, but not for the removal of coarse quartz. Practically all of the quartz can be separated from the zircon by using wet tabling in conjunction with hydraulic classification, or by using air tabling in conjunction with dry launder treatment, in which a degree of sizing takes place that is advantageous for subsequent air tabling.INTRODUCTIONBack-dune and inland beach sand deposits usually contain fine wind-blown quartz, and neither spiral nor wet table concentration, alone or in conjunction, makes a clean separation of heavy minerals from quartz. Many rutile plants recover rutile and zircon from a low-quartz, wet-table concentrates by means of magnetic and electrostatic separation; some rutile and zircon are lost in the table tailings. Other rutile plants, and two of the ilmenite plants in Western Australia, recover rutile or ilmenite respectively, from a spiral concentrate containing several per cent of quartz, and then subject the non-conductor product to an additionalgravity concentration process to separate the zircon from the quartz. Some zircon is lost in the additional gravity process, but all of the rutile or ilmenite in the spiral concentrate is, or should be, recovered as high-grade concentrate. The higher recovery of rutile or ilmenite by this treatment method is offset by the expense of drying part of the feed twice, as a wet process is usually used to separate the quartz...

INTRODUCTION On November 15, 1990, President Bush signed the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990. These Amendments cover many aspects of air pollution control. The provisions which seek to control emissions of "air toxics" may, however, be the most far-reaching and will potentially have the greatest effect on American industry. The Administration has estimated that by the year 2005 industry will be spending $6.7 billion per year on air toxics control. Meanwhile, the Business Round Table has estimated that the price will be far higher, up to $62 billion per year, depending on how EPA and the States implement the program. BASIC REQUIREMENTS Any "major" source of emissions of 189 air toxics will be required to install "MACT." The translation of this statement requires some definitions: •MAJOR SOURCE - A facility (a contiguous property under single ownership and control) which has actual emissions of 10 tons or more per year of any single one of the air toxics or 25 tons per year of any combination of air toxics. •AIR TOXICS - Congress has provided a list of the 189 chemicals on this list. Those that may be important to the mining industry are shown on Table 1. This list can be changed by petition or by EPA. •MACT - Maximum Achievable Control Technology is to be defined by EPA for each industrial source category. EPA says there are about 400 categories. The Act defines MACT as: "the average emission limit achieved by the best performing 12% of the existing sources ... for categories with 30 sources or more" or, "the average emission limitation achieved by the best performing 5 sources in the category." THE Agua Fria mine is in eastern Honduras at Lat. 140° 06' N., Long. 86° 36’ W. Danli, the seat of the local municipal government, is the nearest town. The property is approximately 44 miles east of Tegucigalpa, the terminus of a truck road from the Pacific coast. The mine lies at an altitude of 3300 ft. with surrounding elevations as high as 6000 feet. For 20 years the oxidized croppings of the Agua Fria vein had been worked intermittently when in 1927 an attempt was made to open the property. A shaft was sunk 300 ft. and considerable ore was blocked out, but before a mill could be installed financial difficulties arose and the mine reverted to the original owners. Erle P. Halliburton, of Los Angeles, purchased the property in 1934. At that time a careful consideration of all factors involved showed that air transport was the only practical method of moving the equipment and machinery necessary to commence production. The other alternative was by muleback, which required sectionalizing all equipment to a maximum load of 200 lb., and during the rainy season this type of freighting was subject to serious delays. It was decided to purchase a trimotor Ford powered by three Pratt and Whitney Wasp B motors developing 400 hp. each. There were several reasons for the choice: (1) this type of plane was available at a reasonable price, owing to its replacement by faster models on most of the airlines in the United States; (2) the ship was capable of carrying a pay load of 3000 lb. over the required distance; (3) since this airplane had been widely used there would be no difficulty in securing competent personnel or in purchasing spare parts. It was necessary to rebuild the plane for cargo service. The windows were removed and the fuselage was entirely covered. A hatch was cut in the top of the fuselage to receive heavy crane loads and pieces of freight that were too large or too long to go through the rear door. The seats were removed and the interior of the plane was lined with Duralumin sheets. A heavy-duty landing gear was installed and the floor was reinforced. The nearest site for an airport was two miles north of the mine. The necessary grading was done by a small track-type tractor with a wheeled grader, which was brought in overland.
