This bulletin presents a summary of available information regarding the sources of uranium, radium, and vanadium, the methods used in treating the ores, and the uses of the finished products. In particular the paper describes the ores found in the United States, giving especial attention to those characteristics of the ores and the conditions of their occurrence that affect mining and treatment. Whilst a significant body of research has been carried into air overpressure levels that arise as a result of the use of explosives, few published studies have actually tried to relate the movement of a quarry face to the resulting air overpressure produced. The aim of this preliminary investigation was to monitor a number of quarry blasts at two different limestone quarries. The first using multiple separately initiated deck charges in a multi borehole blast, the second using single column charges in a multi borehole blast.

THE importance of magnesium alloys as engineering materials has increased rapidly in the past few years. The most important properties of magnesium alloys are their lightness and strength, which result in their. extensive use in aircraft and automobile construction. Recent progress in the metallurgy of magnesium seems to offer hope of the production of the pure metal at a reasonable cost. The use of magnesium would doubtless increase greatly if it could be produced at a cost comparable with that of aluminum. AA preliminary survey of the magnesium-base alloys shows that the most promising from a practical standpoint are magnesium-aluminum and magnesium-zinc as binary alloys, and magnesium-zinc-aluminum as ternary alloys. The research reported in this paper is a preliminary study' of binary magnesium-aluminum and magnesium-zinc alloys, as an introduction to a series of further investigations.

The ventilation conditions at the underground coal mines are influenced; first: by the disturbances of the natural nature (barometric pressure, methane liberation, etc.), and second: by the disturbances caused by the production process. The major goal of this study was to determine the changes of the ventilation parameters, such as the flow, pressure and methane concentration around the longwall panel, particularly, along the longwall face due to the shearer operation (motion). It is well known from the practice, that the movement of the shearer influences the ventilation parameters around the longwall panel, including the gob area. Until now, these data were gathered in a single or multiple locations at the different time. However, only the simultaneous measurements of all of these values allow seeing the time dependent interrelationships between measured parameters. To be able to show these interrelationships, special experiments, described in this paper, were carried out by the author. These experiments were prepared and executed at the BUDRYK Coal Mine in Poland. During each experiment a simultaneous measurements and monitoring of the barometric pressure, air velocity and methane concentration at the different locations along the longwall face, were performed. The investigation was possible by using a special setup of instruments with a short sampling time, i.e., within 2 seconds. The monitoring of the absolute pressure was conducted by using the digital barometer µBar, developed by EMAG, based on the SETRA pressure transducer, model 470. The velocity of air was measured using the electronic vane-anemometers, developed by IMG-PAN. The methane concentrations were measured using methanometers as the part of the EMAG automatic gas monitoring system. The investigation data confirmed that disturbances due to the operation (motion) of the shearer at the longwall face have a local character. It could be also seen that a large diameter shearer (compared to the total cross-section area available for the air flow) is acting as the piston compressing the air (the overpressure) ahead of the shearer. This fact affects the methane mixing process and flow patterns in the vicinity.

"The spontaneous combustion of coal storage pile(Gangue Hill) is one of the seriously threat encountered in coal mining and storage. The dynamic accumulation of internal heat in coal storage pile(Gangue Hill) provides continuous heat-source for coal spontaneous combustion. Combined with the features and characteristics of coal pile storage, a technology of heat pipe(HP) is applied to enhance heat transfer. In order to prevent spontaneous combustion of coal storage piles (hillock) due to regeneration, a method using heat pipes to destroy the heat preservation conditions of coal storage pile(Gangue Hill) is proposed, which reduces the risk of coal spontaneous combustion and prevents coal fire. A theoretical model of Coal-Thermosyphon has set up to analysis the radius of cooling effect area quantitatively. An experimental equipment of the heat transferring in a set of heat pipe, which used to study the influence on coal pile temperature distribution, has been designed. Results show, the heat pipe has a significant effect on inhibiting the coal spontaneous combustion process by destroy the heat preservation conditions of the coal. Under the experimental conditions, the most obvious coal temperature decline appears at radius 20.0mm around the pipe, dropped from 45.8? to 32.5?, a decline of 29%; the coal pile temperature at radius 420mm from 12.9? to 12.4?, a decline of 3.87%. And the research offers an effective and new approach in its application and promotion for preventing and controlling in coal spontaneous combustion.INTRODUCTION China is one of a few countries which utilize coal as the major source of energy in the world, and is the one whose characteristic of energy structure is rich coal, deficient oil and lean gas. Relatively speaking, China is abundance in mineral resources. The coal, which is the fundamental resource in the process of industrialization, is the main energy in china. Thus China cannot alter the situation of coal consumption dominated a leading role in its energy structure in near term.A massive of coal gangue would be produced every year in China with the mining activities. And it’s estimated that almost 360 million tons gangue were dumped in 2003, accounting for 10 percent of the whole coal production. Huge numbers of coal waste piles have more than 2,600 seats, which cover an area of over 12,000 hectares. Worse more, the coal gangue still has an annual growth rate of 100 million tons. Toxic smokes and greenhouse gases are discharged directly and prolongly into the atmosphere due to coal gangue spontaneous combustion. Even worse, waste dump explosion cause massive losses and are able to endanger the safety of workers. For example, one waste dump of the NO.4 Mine of Pingdingshan Coal Group Co., Ltd. occurred twice of explosions in 2005, and about 3.13 million tons of waste rocks were thrown within the range from 100 to 300 meters, eight people were killed and 122 rescuers and miners were burned, and economic losses were estimated more than 3,000 million."

A new style of tectonic map based on age of folding has been prepared for the Canadian Appalachian region as part of the Tectonic Map of Canada Project. This style of map pro-vides a clearer picture of the tectonic history of the region than any meth-od hitherto attempted. Precambrian blocks that were relatively unaffected by Palaeozoic de-formation are distinguished on the Great Northern Peninsula and in the Conception Bay region of Newfound-land. K/ A age determinations suggest that these blocks were intruded and metamorphosed during Grenville orogeny. Other Grenville-like rocks, on Cape Breton Island and in New Brunswick, were more actively involved in subsequent Palaeozoic orogeny. Taconic orogeny, the first phase of Palaeozoic deformation, took place in Middle and/or Late Ordovician time and was accompanied by intrusion of ultrabasic rocks. Evidence of the -

This paper is primarily concerned with the exploration for massive sulphide orebodies. In a discussion of this type, it seems appropriate to establish a few definitions so that all parties may consider the same beast and its habitat. First, the term "massive sulphides", as used here, not only denotes a body of mineralized rock containing in excess of 50% sulphides by volume, but a mass of sulphides that respond as a conductor to the electromagnetic (EM) systems currently in use in exploration. "Disseminated sulphides" refer to all of those sulphide occurrences that respond to the Induced Polarization (IP) geophysical methods most commonly in use in porphyry copper exploration. This latter definition may also include the disseminated sulphide halos so frequently found associated with massive mineralization as well as banded and stringer sulphide mineralization. It is plain to see that these two end members of our definitions can easily blend into each other. The term "volcanogenic" refers here to any and all geologic processes that have their origin in volcanic activity. Thus we are concerned here with the exploration for massive sulphide ore deposits derived from and affected by contemporaneous and post mineral volcanic activity. Furthermore, most massive sulphide deposits are apparently formed in a submarine environment, deposited with extrusive rocks and sediments and/or chemical hot spring accumulations, then enclosed and protected by the addition of more volcanic and sedimentary material then, probably folded and deformed into one of their myriad of shapes.

"The Conservative Government 's budget proposals brought forward on December 11, 1979 have been withdrawn, but they are far from dead. On the contrary, a number of those budget proposals, especially the ones which would close loopholes and result in other technical changes being made to the Income Tax Act, should be considered to be alive and well.It is not unreasonable to expect the next government, of whatever political persuasion, to reintroduce many of these technical changes in the next federal budget. For that reason, last December's budget may have offered an interesting preview of what the mining industry and other taxpayers can expect in 1980. It is quite possible that some of these changes may be effective as of the original dates announced in the withdrawn budget proposals.This month, ""Tax Notes"" reviews the main pro visions of Mr. Crosbie's December, 1979 budget, with a primary focus on the changes that would have affected the resource sector.It must be emphasized that all of the budget proposals discussed herein have been withdrawn, that none of them are law and that any actual changes in our tax rules will have to be dealt with by the new Parliament that will be assembled following the February 18 election. December 1979budget withdrawnThe federal budget proposals brought forward by Finance Minister John Crosbie on December II, 1979 were withdrawn as a result of the defeat of the Conservative Government on a motion of non-confidence in the House of Commons on December 13. However, it appears quite possible that at least some of the proposals may be introduced into Parliament at a future date, possibly with retroactive effect.In a press release issued by the Department of Finance, Finance Minister John Crosbie stated that if the Conservative Government is returned to power, it will reintroduce all of the measures contained in his December II budget.Mr. Crosbie stated that all of the income tax measures contained in the budget would be reintroduced, effective on the dates indicated in the Notice of Ways and Means Motion tabled on December II. Some of the more important measures in December II budget, and their effective dates as indicated in the Notice of Ways and Means Motion, are discussed below.The December budget had also introduced or increased excise taxes or duties on gasoline, wines, cosmetics and photofinishing. If the Conservative party is re-elected, these measures will be reintroduced with prospective effect (i.e . effective as of new dates to be announced in the new budget)."

A computerized heuristic model for an efficient and economic design of belt haulage networks in underground coal mines is discussed. The model is versatile, easy to use, and is valid for all mining methods singly or in combination. It may be used to design new networks or to analyze existing networks. The input data required are 1. maximum production rates from a section, 2. probabilities of production rates, 3. equipment costs, and 4. data necessary for network coding to represent different cases. The objective function is the "expected minimum cost per ton of coal hauled" while meeting production requirements. The output includes belt width, motor horsepower, bin size etc. and also values of operating parameters for each belt such as belt speed, effective tension, power consumption etc. A detailed account of the cost involved is also provided for each unit as well as for the entire network. Description of the model and an example of the design of a belt network in a mine with two longwall and four development sections are presented.

The provision of a suitable working environment in deep level mines requires the accurate prediction of the ventilation heat load. Mathematical models for predicting strata heat load have been under development since the 1930's and 1940's. Computer models for predicting this and other mine heat sources have been developed and refined over the last 20 years. Some empirical studies have occurred and there is an increased emphasis on the importance of underground studies. Any theoretically or empirically determined predictive method must of necessity make assumptions. Underground space with its irregular configurations and rough wall surfaces cannot be described by simple mathematical expressions. Some heat loads, such as machinery, may occur intermittently while others such as the influence of water evaporation are very difficult to quantify accurately. Current popular models for predicting mine heat load have been surveyed. In testing some of these it is often found that each estimates significantly different quantitative values for the expected load in a particular underground space under study. These differences are explained by the assumptions, simplifications and omissions implicit in each of these models. It would be easier to estimate conditions at any point if heat flow into mine air passageways could be described by simple equations with associated statistically-based confidence ranges. Use of probability distributions to indicate confidence ranges allows any heat level estimate to be expressed as a range of values with limits for maximum and minimum expected values. This approach allows many of the limitations of the popular predictive models to be overcome. A heat prediction method using this approach has been developed based on Monte Carlo simulation and tested on mine data from a number of operations. Heat flow levels which can be predicted by simple equations supported by probability distributions allow the engineer flexibility in adjusting a predictive model to the underground characteristics appropriate to the mine site under study. The influence of all heat sources present in the mine opening must be included. Prediction methods must be updated as mining systems and machinery change with time. Heat sources interact with one another and the system must therefore be understood in its entirety.

"Positron Emission Particle Tracking (PEPT) and the Discrete Element Method (DEM) are used to develop a probability based model for the power draw of a tumbling mill. Experiments are conducted using dry spherical glass bead charge in a laboratory scale tumbling mill, which is mounted with a torque transducer and tachometer to measure mill power. Particle tracking information from PEPT is used to reconstruct the motion of glass beads and infer the overall charge behavior, while DEM is employed to simulate particle motion and interaction, with collision mechanics calculated using the Hertz-Mindlin contact model. For both sets of data, the product of torque and average angular velocities in discrete cells are accumulated to obtain mill power. This method is found to be within statistical agreement with measured power for all tests. The information from both techniques is then used to develop a model for the power draw as a function of particle size, mill speed and volumetric filling. Predictions of the model match well with measured and calculated values. The model is found to predict mill power within close agreement with measurement and follows trends consistent with existing work on tumbling mill modelling."

AN older man looks back, perhaps wistfully, on a long and rather active experience, and possibly a popular and brief glimpse of some contrast between past and present may hold your attention for a few brief moments and prove useful. In the late nineties an engineer was .called on to de- sign and build two copper ore concentrating mills of 400 tons average daily capacity. There were larger mills than this at Washoe and elsewhere, but a 400 ton' mill was a large one as mills went over thirty years ago, and one might say a large mill of those days could crush a ton of copper ore in 216 seconds. In the mills I refer to steel construction and the conveying belts were introduced into the copper industry and rein- forced concrete came shortly after. Since then we in the West have ever been faced with a constantly de- creasing tenor in the grade of our copper ores and a constantly increasing demand for our product, and we have therefore been obliged to call for far larger castings and finished machines than were formerly used. The mechanical engineer has also enabled us to accomplish notable economies in power generation and distribution. Ore handling and crushing have been simplified and through the introduction of reagents to induce physical or chemical reactions, or both, our older methods have been vastly improved or even supplanted by new and better ones and our recoveries greatly improved.

"Advanced numerical models can be used to evaluate entry support systems in coal mines. However, these methods require specialized software and specialized skills to create the models and evaluate the results. Practicing support design engineers require a method to rapidly assess a proposed support system for a given geotechnical scenario. A prediction equation that can be used to assess roof support systems has been developed from the results of hundreds of FLAC3D analyses that were conducted during recent research. These models were validated against field cases and empirical design approaches and were found to adequately predict entry stability in coal mines. The understanding developed from the model outcomes was used to develop an equation to predict entry roof stability against large roof falls. Least-squares error analysis was conducted to find appropriate parameters for the nonlinear equation. The developed equation can be solved using spreadsheet software, allowing for rapid assessment of alternative support system performance in variable geological conditions. The performance of the prediction equation is evaluated against empirical design methods and against selected case histories of support practices at currently operating mines. Examples are presented that demonstrate the performance of the equation in variable geological settings. The stability factor (SF) prediction equation can be used as an assessment tool to assist in the design of coal mine roof support systems.IntroductionGround falls represent a significant proportion of injuries and fatalities in underground coal mines in the US. During 2013, ground falls were responsible for 4 of the 14 fatalities and 16.6 % of the 1,577 reportable lost-time injuries (MSHA, 2015). In addition, each year about 400 to 500 large roof falls are reported that can extend up to or above the bolted horizon. Large roof falls and associated ground fall hazards can be mitigated through improved support design.The research presented here particularly addresses the problem of large roof falls that extend more than 90 cm (3 ft) above the roof line of an entry and may extend above the bolted horizon. Smaller roof falls that fall out between supports or extend less than 90 cm (3 ft) above the roof line are excluded. These smaller roof falls can be controlled by appropriate surface support such as roof screen or other skin control methods. Also excluded are roof falls that are associated with an individual geological structure such as a slip of fault. Structure-related instabilities can be controlled by strategically locating individual roof bolts or other supports appropriate for the local situation."

Traditional batch flotation tests produce a limited number of data points from which to evaluate the kinetics of the process. In this research, continuous weighing of froth, from a modified circular flotation cell, using a computer/data acquisition system., has been coupled with chemical analyses from intermittent froth sampling. This combination has permitted the experimental data to be smoothed such that the flotation kinetic parameters could be determined with enhanced confidence. To demonstrate the procedure, a galena ore was floated to permit flotation kinetics to be investigated as a function of cell parameters. It was shown that the kinetic data of this lead flotation most closely correlated with the Huber-Panu three parameter model. In addition the results illustrated the effect of froth thickness, froth scraper rate and air flow rate on the cell performance, in terms of mass flow, grade and recovery.

In this process, copper and cobalt were recovered in metallic form and/or as their compounds, whereas iron was recovered as magnetic oxide or pigment. Abrasive grit material was produced using reduced final slag. The process stages involved carbothermal reduction in a DC arc furnace, granulation, leaching, chemical precipitation, selective sulfidizing roasting and product preparations. In this paper, the process stages were described as theoretically and experimentally whereas slag and products were characterized in detail.

NioCorp is developing the niobium/scandium/titanium Elk Creek carbonatite deposit. The probable reserve announced by the company in 2017 indicated significant niobium (0.79% Nb2O5), titanium (2.81% TiO2), and scandium (71 g/t), and is composed predominantly of calcite, dolomite, and ankerite. Niobium is mostly (80%) contained in pyrochlore with the balance in various Fe-Nb-Ti oxides, which also host most of the titanium. Scandium is primarily deported in dolomite, with lesser quantities in pyrochlore and biotite. The process flowsheet recovers separate niobium, titanium, and scandium products. Scandium is extracted from whole ore hydrochloric acid leach solutions using solvent extraction and is further refined through a re-leach and precipitation process. Scandium leach residues are treated in a sulphuric acid sulphation process to recover separate niobium and titanium precipitates as well as to solubilize the remaining scandium. Both hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid reagents are recycled within the flowsheet. This paper will discuss key bench and pilot test results of the niobium extraction and recovery circuits and will present a conceptual flowsheet developed by the project team for NioCorp at SGS Minerals.

Scandium is extracted from whole ore hydrochloric acid leach solutions through solvent extraction, and is further refined through a re-leach and precipitation process. Scandium leach residues are treated with sulphuric acid to recover separate niobium and titanium precipitates. Both hydrochloric acid and sulphuric acid reagents are recycled within the flowsheet. This paper will discuss key bench and pilot test results (focusing on the scandium flowsheet) and will present a conceptual flowsheet developed by the project team for NioCorp at SGS Minerals.INTRODUCTION NioCorp is developing North America's only niobium/scandium/titanium project. The Elk Creek project is located near Elk Creek, Nebraska, and is the highest grade niobium project in North America and the largest prospective producer of scandium in the world. These elements are unique and valuable superalloy materials that are strategic and critical to many industries and national defense technologies. The project includes the Elk Creek Carbonatite (the Carbonatite) that intruded older Precambrian granitic and low to medium grade metamorphic basement rocks. Both the carbonatite and Precambrian rocks are interpreted to be unconformably overlain by approximately 200 meters (m) of Paleozoic marine sedimentary rocks of Pennsylvanian age. As a result of this thick cover, there is no surface outcrop within the Project area of the carbonatite, which was identified and targeted through magnetic surveys and confirmed through subsequent drilling. The available magnetic data indicate dominant northeast, west-northwest striking lineaments, and secondary northwest and north oriented features that mimic the position of regional faults parallel and/or perpendicular to the Nemaha Uplift."

"The problems presented by ice formation and interference with processes, structures and mechanical operations in the mining industry can be expected to increase sharply as more of our mineraI needs are supplied from the far north. A process of rapid ice destruction is presented which lends itself to the effective removal or penetration of ice. Suggestions are offered for applying the system to problems related to mining activity in cold environments. The system can be readily adapted to large-scale operation, the reactant components being transported in crystalline form and volatilized on site.IntroductionThe number of operational mines in northern environments, relative to the number of mines in the temperate zone, will increase in the years ahead. This is not surprising, because:(a) in the past, those mines closest to centres of commerce had minimum transport charges and hence were more economic to develop;(b) great centres of commerce were far removed from northern environments;(c) the exhaustion of ores and lowering of grades in temperate zones now offset to some degree the extra transport costs applied to northern ores;(d) the abundance of excess energy in the north in the form of oil, gas and hydropower attracts mining as a means to justify its development; (e) assuming that the frequency of mineral occurrence north of the 52° N latitude is no different than south of it, there are many deposits waiting to be developed.As a result of current and projected activity in northern environments, we are faced today, and will be increasingly so in the future, with mining problems rarely encountered before-problems related to below-freezing temperatures. Engineering activity in permafrost regions will increase as new mining ventures are developed north of the 52° N latitude, roughly coinciding with the -1.1 ° C isotherm in Labrador, the upper temperature boundary for permafrost."

Abstract A discussion of the difficulties involved in the production of a clean molybdenite concentrate introduces the paper. There is a brief description of the various methods for producing molybdenite that will fit marketing specifications, and it is shown how these methods are nor suited to the milling of ores containing small quantities of bismuth and copper. A process that was developed in the ore testing laboratories of the Bureau of Mines at Ottawa for the La Corne mill of the Molybdenite Corporation of Canada is described in derail and some results from pilot plant operation of this milling scheme are tabulated. A description of the La Corne mill, where the writer supervised the introduction of the process on a commercial scale, adds to the interest of the paper. In conclusion, there is a review of the conditions necessary for proper operation of the flowsheet. An attempt is made to show how the process might be satisfactory in other problems similar to that at the La Corne mill. Introduction The production of a molybdenite concentrate, free from impurities and high in grade, has been a difficult task when milling some types of ore. Whereas ordinary flotation techniques will produce acceptable concentrates of the baser sulphides, in many cases they will not serve in the treatment of molybdenite, for this mineral must be of optimum grade and purity to bring the best prices, or to find a market at all . Faced with the necessity of meeting stringent specifications, the mill operator has been forced to employ expensive processing methods, and to be satisfied with low recoveries, in order to make grade with his product. The most objectionable and common impurities found with molybdenite are: (a) gangue minerals and iron sulphides, which lower the grade; and (b) copper, bismuth, or antimony, which are deleterious in the final uses of the molybdenite products. It is difficult, and sometimes impossible, to market a concentrate with over 0.5 per cent of any of the latter impurities, or with a grade much below 90 per cent MoS2. Various methods, which have been highly successful in specific applications, have been developed to meet the problem of producing a suitable concentrate. All of them, however, have certain defects precluding their use when treating ores of a nature different from the one for which they ? were designed. The writer has developed a process for molybdenite ores having an objectionable impurity content. A description of the procedure involved, and of the La Corne mill of the Molybdenite Corporation of Canada, where the process has been adopted, should be of interest to flotation operators.
