Twin bore running tunnels driven approximately 4,500 route feet by a Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) EPB Tunnel Boring Machine link the West Portal and East Portal on this complex Light Rail Project. One third along the way, the TBM arrives at the Beacon Hill Station which is the deepest underground “binocular” station of its kind in North America and then “walks-across” the station to be re-launched on the other side to complete the drive. This paper discusses briefly the layout and design considerations but then focuses more deeply on the approach by the Contractor to drive and supply the tunnel. The paper addresses the approach used to launch, re-launch and recover the TBM and touches briefly on muck volume control and monitoring plus settlement monitoring and the performance achieved. Also of interest is a unique solution to a difficult launch situation involving a secant pile tieback wall designed with several rows of double I-beam steel walers spanning the eye at the West Portal under the I-5 freeway.

How did you get into mining; were you from a mining town or mining family? Not at all. I grew up in northwest Kansas. I liked to hunt and fish, so I thought it would be fun to work for a company that made knives or guns. It seemed like metallurgical engineers would be something those companies could use, so I started in physical metallurgy. I got a summer job at the great Climax molybdenum mine near Leadville, CO shoveling muck onto conveyors. I was hooked. I loved everything about mining, so in the fall, I changed majors from physical metallurgy to mineral processing. For many years you actually discouraged young people from studying the mining disciplines. Could that be right? That’s true.

In recent years, tunnelling activities in Singapore have increased considerably with the construction of extensions to the existing sub-surface transport system, a deep tunnel sewerage disposal system, and tunnels for the laying power cables and other utilities. These tunnels are excavated through urban areas, adjacent to high-rise buildings, depressed road structures, beneath other tunnels, and buried services. Earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBM) have been used extensively in Singapore with great success. The risk associated with soft ground tunnelling, including tunnelling through Old Alluvium, can be minimized with an understanding of the geology, geotechnical parameters, and the tunnelling-induced behaviour of Old Alluvium (OA The purpose of this paper is to present some design and construction aspects of EPB TBM tunnelling through Old Alluvium.

According to the U.S Department of Energy (DOE), mineral processing activities including comminution (size reduction) uses 4% of the world electrical energy consumption. Such numbers reinforce the need to invest in energy savings initiatives in order to produce more using less. ENERGY EFFICIENCY OPPORTUNITIES AND CHALLENGES IN MINING OPERATIONS In addition, DOE, in its Mining Industry Energy Bandwidth Study, has identified huge potential for energy savings for the coal, metals and mineral industries. Even knowing the overall causes of energy waste and some potential tools for remediation, mining companies may struggle to apply such tools and get the desired results due to the following reasons: ? Limited staff ? Lack of accurate economic and investment analysis to justify energy savings projects ? Lack of knowledge to identify low or no-cost savings opportunities ? Internal competition for resources According to the workforce and talent management experts, the Talent Strategy Advisors, the demand for mining engineers is expected to exceed supply by 30% by 2013. Mining personnel are likely to be burdened with increasing and varied workloads with limited training. This will result in the need for automated and simple tools to support energy efficiency activities. Mining engineers will simply not have the time and resources to create such tools, collect and analyze the data to make decisions, and track results.

The North-South Bypass Tunnel is a new $AUD1.5 billion underground traffic route in Queensland, Australia, a project of the Brisbane City Council. The tunnel is approximately 5.2 km long, bypassing the Central Business District, and is adjacent to and below major buildings and services. Road tunnel alignment issues include the complex southern connections to the Pacific Motorway and the design of ramps to the east and the north. A review of road tunnel alignment criteria and accident data for Australian and overseas tunnels, similar to the proposed NSBT, are discussed. The key findings of this review lead to a rationalization of the traditional tunnel cross sectional width allocation. The road alignment design elements adopted for the NSBT are also discussed. The NSBT route crosses beneath the Brisbane River. Geotechnical investigations and hydrogeological modelling are described. The crossing has a fundamental impact on the alignment and the tunnelling methods. The tunnelling methods to be adopted and the tunnel support are described. The geotechnical investigations and hydrogeology analysis culminate in the selection of a single shielded TBM for the reference design. These outcomes are related to complex issues of hydrogeology and contaminated groundwater. These are discussed in detail.

The Montana Tunnels Mine was mined out to a depth of 900 feet at the end of 1999. The first signs of instability were recognized in 1996 along the upper slope area of the northwest sector when the pit was mined out to a depth of approximately 500 feet. To extend the life of mining operations, it has been proposed to extend and steepen the northwest highwall to a depth of 1000 feet. Slope stability analyses were carried out using the UDEC software program to assess the stability and deformation of the proposed highwall design. Back analysis of an instability in 1997 along the upper slope section and highwall deformation to date has indicated reasonable agreement with the observed mode of failure and displacement monitoring results. The results of detailed analyses of the proposed highwall design have indicated very limited additional deformation, further development of tension cracks is unlikely and large-scale instability is not expected to occur. A total of 40% of additional mining has been completed and ongoing displacement monitoring to date has confirmed very limited additional movement and no further tension crack development.

This is the second in a series of articles on microcomputers and applications in the minerals industry. The first article (ME, Feb., page 129) discussed microcomputer terms and concepts. This article will discuss software for geology and mining. The third article will cover plant, administrative, and geotechnical software applications. Introduction Geology and exploration are areas where computers have a natural fit. Large volumes of data need to be tabulated, evaluated, and made into maps and reports that allow geologists and management to make a decision on a project or mine. Until recently, the programs that performed these tasks were cumbersome and not user friendly by any stretch of the imagination. Learning time to become an expert in these programs typically would be six months or more. The computers needed to run these programs are expensive mainframes. Several years ago, the use of minicomputers became popular because of their lower cost. Programs were adapted to fit these smaller machines and became friendlier. With the advent of micros, many programs. were rewritten and used the screen capability more effectively, thus providing a real advance in user interface. Programs and Price The definition of micro, mini, and mainframe is becoming blurred. For the purposes of this article, micro refers to either an eight- or 16-bit computer, costing less than $10,000 and, more typically, under $5,000. Mini refers to a 16- or 32-bit computer that typically costs more than $25,000. Mainframe refers to a 32-bit or larger computer that costs more than $250,000. There is a large gray area between micros and minis, and minis and mainframes. Technology and prices are changing so fast that the traditional definitions have become almost meaningless and price has become a better guide. With the arrival of the minicomputer, costs for hardware began to fall, but the programs have tended to remain unfriendly. In some cases, the minicomputer acted as a front end to the mainframe. Cost of both the programs and minicomputers could easily run a minimum of $70,000. A total cost of $200,000 would not have been out of line. The average geologist and company would have a great deal of difficulty justifying such a purchase. The advent of the microcomputer has changed all that. For $3,500 to $5,000, one can buy a 16-bit micro and a printer. Plotters with six pens are available for $2,000 that will produce a 280- x 430-mm (11- x17-in.) map. For several hundred dollars, software is available to act as a word processor, an economic spread sheet, or to perform ground water calculations. In fact, some programs are available for free. Some of these programs are relatively easy to learn. In addition, programs are being developed daily that are easy to use. The San Vicente Pipeline Tunnel Project involves the construction of an 8.5-foot-diameter water pipeline in an 11 mile tunnel in San Diego, California. The tunnel is located in extremely variable geologic conditions of strong granitic and volcanic rocks, weak sedimentary rocks, abrasive conglomerates, and mixed face conditions. One reach of the tunnel is a 5,200-foot mixed face reach that includes Friars Formation Conglomerate overlying granitic rock. Due to the variable ground conditions in this reach, the use of a TBM was deemed too risky and the contract documents required drill-and-blast and hand mining methods. Although it was not required, the contractor elected to construct this reach using NATM methods. This paper describes the geology of the 5,200-foot mixed-face reach, the design evaluation, and the construction challenges faced on this project.

Geologic ore controls are usually interpreted and modeled from cross sections and plans, as they are critical to construct meaningful and accurate ore reserves models. The geologic boundaries are often modeled as two-dimensional surfaces or three-dimensional solids and used as hard boundaries to constrain the grade estimates. In many cases, the geologic model is the most important factor in estimating the mineralized tonnage predicted by the reserves model, since it is generally drawn to separate the volumes of mineralized and waste material within the deposit. Because geologic models are interpreted from widely spaced drill hole data, the accuracy of the contacts of the different zones modeled could be poor. The lack of accuracy in the definition of geo-logic zones can have a significant impact on a resource model. In this paper it is shown that the geologic interpretation can and should be checked for potential biases. In particular, an unbiased overall volume of the original drill hole information with respect to the resulting solids and codes assigned to the block model is sought. In addition, geostatistical conditional simulations can be used to simulate the geologic attributes modeled, thus providing an alternative view of the geology, and a measure of the uncertainty of the geologic boundaries. The simulated geologic model provides an assessment of the impact of alternative geologic interpretations on the over-all uncertainty of the reserves model. In the case study presented here, the uncertainty of the geologic model is quantified for a difficult-to-model, high-grade copper deposit in northern Chile.

India is targeting to boost its electrical capacity from 100 GW to 200 GW within the next 10 years. The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) has decided in2001 to take execution of the 800 MW Stage-II of the prestigious 2,051 MW Parbatihydrol electric project in Kulu district of the northern province Himachal Pradesh. Two parallel 30° inclined underground pressure shafts of 1.542m in length each will be excavated in different geological formations and lined with hexagonal concrete segments by a hard rock double shield TBM. That kind of heading will be a novelty to India and an innovative method for inclined pressure shafts. The 4.88m Mitsubishi DSTBM will be assembled underground on a swivelling steel platform especially designed for the launching as well as for the acceptance of the TBM in the upper cavern of each shaft. The hexagonal segmental lining system causes a significant higher job safety than an open TBM with conventional support. Each ring consists of four honeycomb segments with 20 cm thickness. After finalisation of the excavation a steel liner will be installed and concreted. The Joint Venture Jäger-Seli will perform the two pressure shafts as a sub-contractor for the Indian company Gammon India Ltd.

In Australia during the 1990s, Zeni Drilling took on several demanding shaft boring contracts. This paper describes the safety, operational, technical and environmental advantages derived through the implementation of mechanized boring methods for two of these projects. The paper first describes a 3-meter (10 ft) diameter access shaft blind bored from an underground location to 440 meters (1,444 ft) deep for a gold mine in Tasmania. The construction of a 5.8-meter (19 ft) diameter, 515-meter (1,690 ft)deep ventilation shaft for a longwall coal mine in New South Wales is also described.

The combined 75th Annual Minnesota Section of SME meeting and 63rd Annual University of Minnesota Mining Symposium was held April 9 and 10, 2002, in Duluth, MN. This year’s theme was “Keys to the Future: Imagination, Innovation and Technology.” The meeting consisted of plenary and technical sessions and a special General Manager’s Session. The technical paper presentations included concurrent mining and mineral processing sessions. In the General Manager’s Session, representatives from the region’s taconite operations presented the current status, concerns and future plans for each of their operations.

An atomic force microscope (AFM) was used to measure the surface forces between silica surfaces immersed in solutions of hydrolysable cations and/or sodium oleate. Hydrophobic forces were observed at the pH range where the concentration of the singly-charged hydroxo-complexes (CaOH+ or MgOH+) in solution is the highest. In the absence of oleate, the adsorption of the hydroxo-complexes was indicated by the disappearance of the repulsive hydration force. These results suggest that the hydrolysable cations adsorb on silica as singly-charged hydroxo-complexes. Based on the results obtained in the present work, a model for the adsorption of hydrolysable cations has been developed.

A conference on coalbed and coal mine methane was held March 27 and 28, 2000, in Denver, CO. The conference, organized by the Strategic Resource Institute, was attended by leaders in the coal mining and gas energy industry. The conference focused on the recovery of methane from coal beds as an energy resource and the removal and utilization of coal-mine methane (CMM) related to underground coal mining. The two-day conference discussed methane resources around the world, methods of recovery, methane markets, underground coal mining, health and safety issues and environmental issues related to methane. The consensus among the presenters is that the future looks promising for coal bed methane (CBM) and CMM.

Southern Copper Corporation (SCC) is one of the world’s largest copper companies and is finishing the modernization of the Ilo copper smelter. A single ISASMELTTM furnace will start smelting 1,200,000 tons per year of concentrate at the end of 2006. Three existing Peirce Smith converters are being upgraded plus a new one for converting the matte to blister copper is being installed. Two new anode furnaces and a twin anode casting wheel have being operating since January 2006. This represents one of the main changes in the process because the final product of the smelter is now anode copper instead of blister copper. A new oxygen plant, acid plant, and others facilities are in the ramp-up stage. This environmental project will ensure that the new smelter will comply with the environmental regulations of Peru by the end of January 2007. This paper summarizes the background to the modernization project, describes the different stages of the project including engineering, procurement and construction, describes the main areas of the new copper smelter and also the pre-operational testing, commissioning and start-up of them. This is a brown field project with a target of reducing as much as possible the production losses of the existing operation. This paper presents the details of the development of the Ilo Smelter Modernization Project and explains the main aspects of the new facilities, the products to be obtained and the associated facilities for their commercialization, including a Marine Trestle for bulk acid exportation.

In recent years, U.S. regulatory agencies have placed emphasis on identifying and regulating asbestos dust exposures in the mining environment, with a particular focus upon industrial mineral deposits in which asbestos occurs as an accessory mineral. Because asbestos minerals form in specific geologic environments, only certain predictable types of industrial mineral deposits can potentially host asbestos mineralization. By applying a basic knowledge of asbestos geology, the costly and time consuming efforts of asbestos monitoring and analyses can be directed towards those mineral deposit types most likely to contain asbestos mineralogy, while saving efforts on the mineral deposits that are unlikely to contain asbestos. While the vast majority of industrial mineral deposits in the Western United States are asbestos-free, there are several types that can, in some instances, host asbestos mineralization, or be closely associated with it. These industrial mineral deposits include a few types of aggregate, dimension, and decorative stone, and some deposits of chromite-nickel, magnesite, nepheline syenite, olivine, rare earth elements, talc, vermiculite, and wollastonite.

The paper describes the main drive systems of an iron ore pelletizing plant and related important design aspects. It is shown how today?s drive systems provide the desired flexibility for the process and lead to high energy efficiency and system reliability. With respect to electric drives expansion projects have many technical issues in common with green-field installations. However, there are aspects where important, distinct differences occur. It is shown which considerations for selecting and sizing drive systems for such a plant as well as for integrating them into an overall plant control concept need to be taken into account. Besides the design of the drive systems a key aspect for such an expansion project is the network interaction. Harmonics levels at different points in the plant network need to be checked carefully with simulations during the design phase to avoid problems later-on during operation. The power factor compensation and the harmonic filtering of the new production line cannot be designed independently of the already existing plant. The paper highlights areas where problems could occur and which points need to be paid attention to when a plant is expanded.

The bioleaching of sulfide minerals involves a ferric attack of the mineral with the role of the micro-organisms being the oxidation of the ferrous-iron back to the ferric form, and the oxidation of sulfur, either via thiosulfate or polysulfides, to sulfate. The kinetics of bacterial ferrous-iron oxidation and the chemical ferric leach kinetics of sulfide minerals can both be described as functions of the ferric/ferrous-iron ratio. The independently determined bacterial ferrous-iron oxidation and chemical ferric-iron leaching kinetics have been successfully used to predict continuous bioleaching operations.

Mineral exploration activity in the US suffered through another depressed year in 1984. And continued strength in precious metals (and possibly industrial minerals) exploration failed to make up for declines in other minerals. 1984 offered little solace for the explorationist. But some new data on mineral exploration provided better statistics for analysts of US mineral exploration trends. The Society of Economic Geologists (SEG) published data from its survey of 1980,1981, and 1982 exploration by US and Canadian companies - 96 companies responded (Barber and Muessig, 1984). In addition, a Mining Engineering (April 1984 p. 345) article by Emerson and Ivosevic presented their data on annual exploration expenditures in the US for gold and for all minerals from 1961 through 1983. A review of 1984 domestic exploration and development activities reported in several industry journals indicates that almost 90% of those projects were directed at gold and silver deposits. Statistics on 1984 exploration expenditures are not available. But some industry observers believe that precious metals accounted for an even larger share of industry's exploration budget in 1984 than in 1983. This paper presents a virtual prototype for the stress analysis of cable shovel components based on combination of flexible and rigid body approach. The general mechanical system of the cable shovel is modeled as a multi-body system with rigid and flexible bodies. The relevant theories applied for the dynamic model are described in terms of Lagrangian multi-body dynamics and finite element method. A virtual prototype of the cable shovel is built in the Automatic Dynamic Analysis Mechanical System (ADAMS) environment, which allows visualizing the motion of general mechanical system and analyzing the dynamic stress of structural components of the cable shovel. An example is given to perform dynamic stress of durability analysis for the boom and handle. Attention of this study is devoted to the mechanisms of damage of the cable shovel and also the critical high stress areas.
