Detailed description of the development of the FIOR process1 and, subsequently, other technical papers relating to the operation and start up of the FIOR plant2,3 are available in the technical literature. The Fluidized Iron Ore Reduction (FIOR) process plant constructed in the Matanzas region of Venezuela represents the first commercial application of this technology. The FIOR process was developed by Exxon Company during the 1950's and 1960's; and the facility in Venezuela was designed and constructed by Davy McKee with the plant start up in 1976. While there is a minority government ownership in the company, FIOR de Venezuela operates as a private sector company with the majority of the ownership being private capital.

The Occidental Oil Shale mining and retorting system for the production of shale oil has many advantages over the conventional underground mine and surface retort systems. For example only a portion of the oil shale is mined and transported to the outside, where it blends with the existing shale talus found on most of the slopes in the immediate area. The retorted spent shale is retained underground so that it does not become a surface disposal problem. The process consumes only minor amounts of water which is produced in adequate amounts in the retorting to fulfill all mining operations needs without outside supplies. Noise and dust levels are kept to a minimum with most of the facilities located underground. The exception being the generating stations and facilities as required to monitor air and water qualities, and last but not least, more than four times as much oil is pro¬duced from a given acre than from conventional surface processing. With the increased thicknesses as available on the government monopoly area this number could be increased by a substantial amount.

In underground mining operations, ventilation and water sprays are the common methods of controlling dust. In recent years there has been a proliferation of technical literature dealing with water sprays for dust control. However, guidelines for the design of an effective water spray system have not been presented to the mining industry. This paper reviews developments in water spray dust control technology and recommends guidelines for water spray systems to control dust in under- ground coal and non-coal mining operations. These guidelines suggest type, number, location and orientation of nozzles, desirable operating water pressure, and associated filtration system.

Introduction A computer program was developed for analyzing drum-type hoists before modifying an existing system or designing a new one. Its use permits the preliminary evaluation of a system before seeking technical assistance from mine hoist designers and manufacturers. The user-friendly program accepts a variety of data and analyzes hoisting systems for any balance state. The program can be used to calculate skip capacity to yield a desired production rate, solve for drum face width, select a permissible wire rope, estimate total horsepower of the hoist plant, and estimate annual power cost. Whether required for a large mining complex or for a relatively small operation, a hoisting system must be carefully designed to ensure the efficient, reliable, and safe flow of material. Because shaft sinking and hoist installation can total between 2.5% and 3% of the cost of opening a deep mine, proper hoist selection is critical. Today's mining engineer has at his disposal the most powerful design and analytical aid ever, the micro- computer. There is, unfortunately, limited software for the study of hoisting systems, unlike that for other materials handling equipment (Manula and Albert, 1980; Prelaz et al., 1964; Bucklen, 1969; Thompson, 1985). HOIST reduces a time-consuming set of calculations to a concise package of interrelated subprograms. A literature review revealed no common-user pro- grams to analyze hoisting systems, although at least four major hoist designers/manufacturers/installers have their own in-house programs. To provide a tool with which the mining engineer could preliminarily analyze a materials hoisting system or could check the calculations of a hoist contractor, a computer program was developed. HOIST was written in BASIC for the IBM-PC for ease of program adaptation and to en- courage field use on compatible systems. Details of program development are omitted, since the basic principles of hoisting analyses are relatively straightforward, simple, and readily accepted (Har- mon, 1973; Nordberg, n.d.; Adler, 1957). Program features, intended usage, and benefits of the com- puterized solution are emphasized over theory development and mathematical rigor. Background The mine hoist system that is selected and installed at a mine is the "lifeline" of that mine, with installations lasting 20 years or more. Thorough study is warranted to ensure that productivity demands are met at a minimum cost per ton. The increased cost of a large, powerful, high-speed hoist must be offset by increased production to justify its selection. To optimize this tradeoff, an extensive hoisting analysis should be performed. The analyses to properly size the skip (or cage ) , the drum, and the hoist drive are conducive to computerization, permitting rapid evaluation of changeable operating and design parameters, such as velocity, acceleration, state of balance, and productivity demand. The program is particularly useful in conducting sensitivity trials, such as investigation into the effect of change of productivity on skip capacity and on horsepower of the hoist drive. HOIST is currently limited to the study of drum-type hoists with cylindrical drum(s). However, only minor changes to the program would permit analysis of friction hoists and conical drum configurations. Model development and testing The program is based on accepted equations and physical relationships. Examples of manual calculations formed the basis for decision points and program branching. Data is input in the order that it would be needed if the problems were solved manually. The choices are arranged likewise. HOIST was developed in sections, with manual solutions performed to check program logic. The testing became more rigorous as sections were completed. Output from one section becomes input for following sections, as appropriate. The simplified flow diagram of HOIST is given in Fig. 1.

Drilling fluids have changed over the years from water and/or water frequently mixed with local clays to scientifically com- pounded materials (mud). This change has occurred due to changes in drilling methods from percussion to rotary: depth maximum from 21 m in the first oil well to more than 9 000 m; and variety in types of well or hole to gas, oil, water, and mineral exploration. Environmental concerns about the composition of the fluid as to heavy metals and oil on the cuttings has recently caused changes in the materials used in the mud. The drilling fluid should perform the following functions (Darley et al., 1980): 1) Carry cuttings from beneath the bit, transport them up the annulus, and permit their separation at the surface. 2) Cool and clean the bit. 3) Reduce friction between the drilling string and the sides of the hole. 4) Maintain the stability of uncased sections of the borehole. 5) Prevent the inflow of fluids-oil, gas, or water-from permeable rocks penetrated. 6) Form a thin, low-permeability filter cake which seals pores and other openings in formations penetrated by the bit. In addition to these, the fluid should: 1) Not injure drilling personnel nor be damaging or offensive to the environment. 2) Not require unusual or expensive methods of completion of the drilled hole. 3) Not interfere with the normal productivity of the fluid- bearing formation. 4) Not corrode or cause excessive wear of drilling equipment. A number of industrial minerals, chemicals, and other materials are used as additives in the drilling fluid to accomplish these functions. Industrial minerals make up the highest percentage of the additives in a drilling fluid. Drilling fluids are classified according to their principal components: water, oil, and gas. If the major component is either water or oil, the component along with the suspension of solids, cuttings and additives is referred to in the trade as a mud. The largest use of some industrial minerals, such as barite and bentonite, is in drilling muds. For other materials, such as gypsum and limestone, drilling usage is only a small percentage of total demand. RAW MATERIALS [Table 1] lists the industrial minerals used in drilling fluids, their form, specifications, and uses. Each raw material will be discussed as to its mineralogy, physical and chemical properties, and the location of major deposits with respect to drilling fluids. Attapulgite Attapulgite is a crystalline hydrated magnesium silicate clay mineral, prized for its viscosity in saline waters. The particles are needle-like rather than the platelets common to most clay minerals. The specific gravity is 2.5 and the Mohs hardness is 1 to 1.5. Attapulgite is one of the materials sometimes referred to as fuller's earth. The major producing areas in the United States are southern Georgia and northwestern Florida. It also is mined in Spain, Senegal, the Republic of South Africa, Turkey, India, and Australia. Barite Barite is crystalline barium sulfate. It has a high specific gravity for a non-metallic mineral, 4.5 when pure, and is used as a weighting agent. Generally, the specific gravity ranges from 4.20 to 4.35. It is relatively soft with a Mohs hardness of 3 to 3.5 and is not very abrasive. Barite is inert, non-toxic, and clean to handle. Common contaminants are quartz, iron minerals, gypsum, and calcium carbonate. If there is considerable gypsum in the barite, it will thicken the mud. The major deposits in the United States are in north central Nevada, near Battle Mountain. The major producing countries, other than the United States, are China, India, Mexico, the former USSR, Turkey, and Morocco. The major deposits in India and Nevada, and some in China, are stratiform, commonly quite pure bodies in bedded sedimentary rocks.

Fluid energy grinding, or jet pulverization, refers to the process of entraining solid particles in high velocity gaseous or vaporous streams and reducing their size by impact and attrition against other particles or some sort of target. Since all desired size reduction is not achieved in one pass through the zone where energy is applied, some form of classification is necessary to return oversize particles to the grinding zone for further size reduction. Applications Fluid energy mills have normally been used to produce products where the particle size is basically finer than 325 mesh. Products having particle size distributions with a maximum size of 4 or 5 µm, and with a high percentage finer than I µm, can be produced using fluid energy mills. More recently, some fluid energy grinding units have been applied economically to produce ground products with 1 or 2% coarser than 200 mesh. It is also possible to consider usage of a jet-pulverizing zone, without the usual integrated air classi¬fier, operated either in open circuit or in conjunction with a screen. Feed sizes to be delivered to the fluid energy mill depend on the material involved, the type of jet pulverizer used, the finished product size requirement, and the upstream process. In some units feed sizes up to l in. or larger can be accepted, but practical economics usually require the starting material to be -4 mesh or smaller and some pulverizers are typically fed at 20 mesh top size. It is not unusual to find feed materials at essentially -325 mesh when extremely fine products are needed, since capacities are improved with finer feeds. Conventionally the fluid energy grinding process has been used for relatively soft and nonabrasive materials. This includes very low¬melting-point and temperature-sensitive materials or coatings, since there is no measurable temperature rise during fluid energy milling. More recently, however, jet pulverizers are being used on highly abra¬sive materials such as silica, feldspar, glass, zircon, calcined alumina, coke, boron carbide, and similar materials. Since the primary energy application is by impact of particles against themselves, there is a low rate of wear resulting in a small amount of product contamination and in low maintenance costs. Usually the fluid energy pulverizer produces a more narrow particle size distribution than other mills provide, and this is useful where such a requirement exists. It is possible, within limits, to adjust classifi¬cation and other functions of the overall fluid energy system to vary the particle size distribution curve and thereby approach the broader distribution obtained from other grinding methods. By controlling the temperature, composition, and humidity of the fluid used, it is possible to incorporate other functions with the size-reduction process. These include drying or adding moisture, coating, mixing and blend¬ing, and even oxidation or reduction and other chemical reactions or their inhibition. The finished product is discharged in the fluid stream and is conveyed pneumatically to the desired point, where a suitable dust collector must be provided. Operation and Mechanical Features One of the earliest fluid energy mills is the Micronizer now manu¬factured by the Sturtevant Mill Co. Similar units are also manufac¬tured by Jet Pulverizer Co. and others. As shown in Fig. 81, the micronizer consists of a shallow circular grinding chamber with noz¬zles arranged at the outer periphery to discharge tangentially inward. Fluid (usually compressed air or superheated steam) is provided to the nozzles from a manifold at pressures normally in the range of 100-150 psig and at temperatures up to 800°F or higher, depending on the raw material, required results, and economic factors. The com¬pressible fluid expands to high velocity through the nozzles and gener¬ates a spiral flow pattern in the grinding chamber, and discharges

The literature on four different topics is re¬viewed herein for purposes of mathematical mod¬eling of mine water inflow. The first of the topics reviewed is modeling of fissured or fractured ma¬terials; the second is general Darcy based flow models; the third is field methods for determining fracture flow properties; and the fourth is methods used presently for determining mine water inflows. The four topics are considered in the foregoing order. FRACTURE FLOW MODEL Two basic types of fracture flow models have been developed. The first type uses various tech¬niques for space averaging to obtain the equations. Systems are considered in which the porous media properties vary smoothly enough and the fracturing is sufficiently profuse and well distributed that the locally averaged properties are meaningful when viewed on the macroscopic scale. The final result is that a coefficient is used which is similar to saturated hydraulic conductivity and in many cases, simply is hydraulic conductivity. In other cases, the coefficient is apparent hydraulic conductivity be¬cause the response from flow in the fractures is more rapid than flow in the pore spaces. Faust and Mercer (1980) refers to this method as the contin¬uum approach. Some of the papers on this type of problem are by Duguid (1973), Verner et al. (1974), Owili-Eger (1975), Duguid and Abel (1974), duPrey and Weill (1974), and O'Neill (1978). Duguid and Lee (1977) also considered heat flow in the fluid and the porous medium. These papers all result in various types of computer programs. Some papers on this topic that do not result in computer programs are by Snow (1968, 1969) and Streltsova (1976). Some of the foregoing articles consider con¬solidation of the porous media and the resulting effect on hydraulic conductivity. Barenblatt et al. (1960) developed an analytical solution for fracture flow and discussed the time that is involved in the drainage process and the effect that fracture flow has on the drainage time. The second type of fracture flow model con¬siders the width of the fractures as a function of the pressure in the field. Faust and Mercer (1980) refers to this method as the discontinuum approach. This approach often requires two finite element programs that consider the stress in the material and the flow in the fractures separately. The pro¬grams are then linked to arrive at the final solution. Some of the articles that consider the interrela¬tionship between pressure and the size of the frac¬ture but do not use computer solutions are Gringarten et al. (1975), Narasimhan and Palen (1979), and Witherspoon et al. (1979). Papers that use a linked computer program between stress and flow are by Ayatollahi (1978), Gale et al. (1974), and Noorishad et al. (1971). Ayatollahi's program is primarily for the petroleum industry because it does not consider the effect of gravity. Ayatollahi assumes that pressure effects are very large in com¬parison to gravity effects. This assumption would apply only to very deep aquifers. Articles that consider fracture flow on a more applied basis are by Wittke et al. (1972), who con¬siders that the flow is entirely through fissures and negligible through the pores of the rock. Gringarten and Witherspoon (1972) developed type curves that may be used for analysis of fracture flow systems; the curves are based on the assumption that it is possible to distinguish between aquifers with hor¬izontal and vertical fractures and that it is possible to analyze the system as an equivalent anisotropic homogeneous porous medium with a single fracture with much higher permeability. INTRODUCTION The inelastic stress-strain behavior of rocks has urged engineers to seek for the possible application of plasticity to engineering pro¬jects such as tunnels, oil wells, dams, etc. for a long time. Early efforts in this direction have tentatively used the classical theories to solve some axisymmetric problems, in which the rocks were treated as perfectly plastic and nonfrictional materials (Talobre, J. A., 1957). Meanwhile, one of the fundamental assumptions is that the volume strain of elastoplastic material is purely elastic. Drucker and Prager (1952) developed a perfectly plastic and frictional model with a generalized form of Mohr-Coulomb law, which serves as both failure criterion and yield criterion. Although the associated flow rule gives unacceptably large dilatancy, this model is a very important step to deal with the frictional behavior of geological materials. As a further step, Roscoe et al (1963) and Schofield and Wroth (1968) proposed a Cam-clay model, which accounts for the yielding before the material reaches a failure envelope and reflects the plastic volume strain as a strain hardening factor, and the open end of the Drucker-Prager envelope is capped by a family of yield surfaces, the envelope is made conforming with crit¬ical void ratio line. The proposed shapes of the cap have been based on experimental data and on convenience of mathematical descrip¬tions. Drucker, Gibson and Henkel (1957) introduced a spherical cap for soils, while in Cam-clay model the cap is semi-logarithmic yield function derived from the result of triaxial tests. DiMaggio and Sandler (1971) proposed an elliptical model for sand, in which the hardening function depends exponentially on plastic strain. Sandler et al (1976) used a plane cap model to express the behavior of a wide range of geological materials of which the nonlinear hysteretic nature is significant. Mizuno and Chen (1982) illustrated the physical mean¬ing of cap models and their adaption to finite element calculation. In recent years, Carroll et al (1972, 1980) have studied the com¬paction of porous materials under hydrostatic pressure and discussed the mechanism of the nonlinear response thoroughly. Analytical and numerical analysis of the hollow sphere model by Curran and Carroll (1979) predicted an initial yielding surface, dependent on the initial porosity, and showed a strong coupling between hydrostatic and deviatoric effects. All these main features from the abovementioned theoretical research are visualized by the experimental data on Boise sandstone (1984). The combination of such previous work would be logically the construction of a plasticity model for porous rocks which, following the tradition of assigning the name of birthplace to a special model, is called Cal-Rock model (Carrol, M. M., 1984). The results of triaxial tests along different loading paths reveal the compaction characteristics for deviatoric and hydrostatic stress separately. the fitting of the nonlinear stress-strain curves leads to a construction of yield surfaces. Moreover, an uniaxial strain test gives the strength envelope which is the critical state line. The whole model is composed in the frame of elasticity theory. The concept and representation of plasticity used here are in the spirit of Naghdi¬Casey theory (Casey and Naghdi, 1984 and 1984, Naghdi and Trapp, 1975). In order to find the way of using such a plasticity model in engineering problems, the stress field in a thick-walled cylinder of porous material is calculated. This is an axisymmetrical problem with plane strain, which is an idealization of oil well in an infinite medium. Because the constitutive relation is highly nonlinear, a numerical method has been utilized to obtain the solution. CONSTRUCTION OF CAL-ROCK MODEL (1). Elastic-plastic constitutive equations The basic assumption is that the yield surface in stress space depends on one parameter, namely the plastic volume strain, as the data on Boise sandstone suggested. The application of geophysical technology relative to the exploration, planning, and operation of coal mines is expanding. This is due to the trend of the industry to increase the size of operations, use of mechanized equipment and mining of more difficult coals, where unforeseen conditions can affect mine profitability. Coal is a good geophysical target because of its lower density, higher electrical resistivity, lower seismic wave velocity, and lower magnetic susceptibility in comparison to typical country rock. The more important techniques are well logging, high resolution seismic reflection, seam wave velocity, and radar. These methods can be used to map coal horizons, determine the physical properties of the coal, and identify mining hazards. The methods are not a pancrea however. Their use should be based on a careful assessment of their expected success and cost benefit analysis in comparison with conventional technology, primarily drilling, which none of the techniques presented should entirely replace. In general, the level of technology developed for geophysics surpasses their current level of application to coal problems. In some cases, identifying hazards in advance of mining using seam wave seismic in particular, the state of the art has been developed in Europe and is awaiting fruitful application in the United States.

Traditionally, cost effective gains in the capacity of material handling systems were a result of increases in equipment size. In general, the use of maximum capacity components in a system optimizes the production "costs per ton." The trend-"Bigger is Better" will continue in material handling equipment. Since it is rare for plant operators to lament an over abundance of screening capacity, one can safely predict that vibrating screens will follow this trend. Large Vibrating Screens - The Challenge Large vibrating screens represent a unique challenge for Manufacturers, Plant Designers, and Plant Operators. The inherent mode of operation for vibrating screens is self-destructive. More often than Manufacturers admit, Designers plan for, or Operators staff for, a vibrating screen succeeds and self-destructs. This is a problem. It can magnify with larger vibrating screens.

Environmental geologic maps of the Wilcox and Jackson-Yegua lignite belts of the Texas Coastal Plain delineate land areas on the basis of their natural characteristics. Criteria used to define map units include substrate, soil, topography, geologic process, vegetation, and land use. The maps are useful in planning and reclamation of lignite mines and in meeting the requirements of State and Federal surface mining laws. Specific applications include identification of land capability, recharge areas and geometry of aquifers, flood-prone areas, areas that may qualify for prime farmland status, and other areas sensitive to lignite mining.

Early history of the district is typical of many, particularly in Southwestern United States. The usual early Spanish influence was felt; Marcos de Niza, Coronado and Father Kino are most notable, but authentic records regarding Spanish mining activities are sparse. About 1769 the Indian village of Tucson became a Spanish settlement. During the next century prospecting attempts were largely interrupted by the Indian, Mexican and Civil Wars. By 1870 Tucson had a population of 3200 and by 1880 the Southern Pacific Railroad extended all the way from Los Angeles. Pyrometasomatic copper ore was first produced with some local direct ore smelting done during the late 1800s. By 1907, a rail line was built from the Twin Buttes mines to Tucson by the Twin Buttes Mining and Smelting Company. World War I was a very active period, with mixed copper, lead, zinc, gold and silver production. This came mainly from underground replacement and contact metamorphic deposits and from practically all portions of the district. Some of these operations continued intermittently until the 1929 depression.

Screening during the production of high-grade lump ore for blast furnace burden, particularly from recently developed ore deposits in Australia, South America, and Africa, has resulted in large tonnages of fine iron ore. Certain owners have decided to stockpile these fines until some later date; however, others have either sold these fines "as is" for agglomeration at the steel plant or have established their own pelletizing plants to produce a premium quality agglomerate. Normally these fines consist of the higher oxides of iron and the hydrated oxides. Unfortunately, grinding these types of materials in a wet process produces a slurry that is difficult to filter to obtain the requisite moisture level for the subsequent balling and indurating operations. The purpose of this paper is to review recent developments in fine dry grinding of iron ore and to discuss the various design and operating parameters involved. Although dry grinding of raw feed and clinker has been practiced in the cement industry for many decades, its significant application to the iron ore industry has taken place within the past ten years. Even though the basic concept of dry grinding has been borrowed from the cement industry, the successful application to iron ore grinding has not taken place without some difficulties. Consequently, the application to iron ore has required the solution of several unique design and operating problems.

The personal dust monitor (PDM) is a combined tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) respirable dust monitor and cap lamp, configured to have dimensions and weight similar to those of a lead-acid miner’s cap lamp battery. The Higgins-Dewell (HD) cyclone design operated at 2.2 L min-1 airflow has previously been reported to have low bias relative to the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) convention. Previous reports have described the PDM as meeting the NIOSH Accuracy Criterion. In order to avoid certain analysis anomalies encountered during these evaluations, a different method of establishing the PDM relative standard deviation was employed. Re-analysis of laboratory data for both the early prototype and precommercial PDMs indicates that the PDM still meets the NIOSH accuracy criterion, and that the precommercial PDMs are more accurate than previously reported.

Gold assays from production blastholes in the Mercur Hill Pit were used to delineate known ore zones and to determine how well previous exploration drilling defined these zones. The most important factors causing inadequate ore zone definition were: 1) inappropriate location of drill holes relative to the ore zones, 2) presence of stopes from previous mining, 3) sampling and assaying errors, and 4) smoothing of the ore zone boundaries during ore reserve estimation. Infill drilling strategies were evaluated to determine the efficiency with which a given drill pattern defined the known ore zones. A drilling strategy was developed which improved ore zone delineation when compared to techniques which maintained uniform drill spacing.

"Testing was conducted to determine the ability of foam to maintain roof coverage in a simulated longwall mining environment. Approximately 27% of the respirable coal mine dust can be attributed to longwall shield movement. Developing controls for this dust source has been difficult. The application of foam is a possible dust control method for this source. Laboratory testing of two foam agents was conducted to determine their ability of foam to adhere to a simulated longwall face roof surface. Two different foam generation methods were used; compressed air (CA) and blower air (BA). Using a new imaging technology, image processing and analysis utilizing ImageJ software produced quantifiable results of foam roof coverage. For CA foam in 3.3 m/s (3.3 m/s (650 fpm)) ventilation at 3 minutes after application, 98% of agent A was intact, while 95% of agent B was intact on the roof. At 30 minutes after application 94% of agent A was intact while only 20% of agent B remained. For BA in 3.3 m/s (3.3 m/s (650 fpm)) ventilation, the results were dependent upon nozzle type. Three different nozzles were tested. At 30 minutes after application 74-92% of foam agent A remained, while 3-50% of foam agent B remained. CA foam seems to remain intact for longer durations and is easier to apply than BA foam. However, more water drained from the foam when using CA foam which demonstrates that BA foam retains more water at the roof surface. Agent A seemed to be the better performer as far as roof application is concerned. This testing demonstrates that roof application of foam is feasible and is able withstand a typical face ventilation velocity, establishing this technique’s potential for longwall shield dust control. INTRODUCTION NIOSH personnel have visited many longwall operations at various geographical locations in the U.S., conducting benchmark surveys to characterize current operating practices and dust control measures in use. Sources of respirable dust generated from the longwall face have been identified as: intake (10%), stage loader (20%), shields (27%), and shearer (43%) [1]. Dust generated from the shearer, armored face conveyor, and the stage loader can mainly be controlled by water sprays and increases in ventilation air quantities, however, research has demonstrated limited effective controls for dusts generated by shield movements [2]. One possible approach to mitigating shield dust generation is to apply a layer of water or foam to the shield-roof interface. Once this interface is blanketed with foam or water, dust will be less likely to become airborne and contaminate the airways over the personnel walkways. Though water is an abundant and common dust control measure, roof applications have limited success because water is unable to remain in-place in adequate quantities for the necessary duration between application and shield advance. Past and current testing of foam for material properties has shown that it has longer applicability times, ranging from 10 to 60 minutes [3] and has shown better performance for dust control, ranging from 19-96% improved efficiency over water [4, 5, 6, 7, 8]. "Recirculation is prohibited in many coal mining countries because of the fear that the re-use of return air would allow the build-up of air contaminants at the workings. The incorrect design and location of a booster fan in any ventilation network can create unsafe condition due to recirculation. The current approach to investigating recirculation using simulation software requires manual effort which becomes tedious in a complex and a large network. An algorithm-based C++ program was designed to detect the recirculation in a booster fan ventilation networks. This program needed an input file prepared from output file generated by any ventilation simulator. This program created an output file for recirculation. This program demonstrated the strong capability to detect the recirculation in a sample network and a coal mine ventilation network. The outcomes of this program were documented in this paper. The proper utilization of a booster fan derives benefits to reduce the main fan pressure, leakage, and consequently ventilation cost especially with high resistance network due to deep and extensive working area in a mine. However installation of booster fan may create uncontrolled recirculation, if it is not sized and located properly with respect to main fan. STATEMENT OF PROBLEM The currently available ventilation simulation programs do not give much information about recirculation for the generated solution (fan pressures). The current approach to investigating recirculation using simulation software requires manual effort, i.e., traversing from node to node in the output network by the simulator while keeping tracks of all the nodes that form recirculation paths. This is an easy task in a simple ventilation network, but it becomes tedious and sometimes very confusing in a complex and large network. Moreover, the presence of multiple recirculation paths makes the manual effort more complex and difficult, especially in separating multiple loops that are connected together. Thus, there is a need for a more efficient program that will detect and quantify the recirculation efficiently, for the generated fan pressures. A program is developed to detect the recirculation(s) in a network."

Although the quantity of native sulphur associated with volcanism is large, production from such deposits represents only a very small percentage of total world production, This paper describes the location of the known deposits, the typical geology of these deposits and the nature of the sulphur mineralization. Methods of treatment are discussed and some comments are offered on the economic position of these occurences in world sulphur markets.

Early disseminated copper mineralization at Quebrada Blanca, Chile, accompanied 38 million year old quartz monzonite stocks and dikes. Early mineralization was followed by hydrothermal mineralization, mineralized breccias, and post-mineral faulting. After supergene leaching and enrichment, Quebrada Blanca was buried under late Tertiary gravels, and then partially re- exposed in Quaternary time. Based on work to date the orebody appears to contain more than one hundred million tons of plus one percent secondarily enriched copper ore, overlying several hundred million tons of protore averaging more than 0.5% copper. A source of industrial water appears to have been located. Pilot scale metallurgical tests, mine planning, and feasibility studies are in progress.
