"Foreword by Ren BryceSenior engineer, Freeport-McMoRan, Oro Valley, AZ, USAThe eighth annual Mineral & Metallurgical Processing Division (MPD) student poster contest was held in February at the national SME Annual Conference & Expo in Denver, CO. A total of 33 students presented their work at the poster competition. The competition started in January when the students submitted a one-page abstract for judging. In February, they prepared and presented a poster that explained their research. A panel of judges went to each student and listened as the students explained their research in five minutes.The students worked hard at their research and then set aside time to complete all the necessary steps to enter the competition. The MPD recognizes the effort required to enter and as a result, provides monetary rewards to all participants. The first-place winner receives $1,000; the second, $500; the third, $250; and the fourth through seventh, $200. All remaining students receive $100. All of the students also receive a complimentary ticket to the MPD Luncheon. As in past years, there are separate levels of competition for undergraduates and graduates.Graduate winnersKaustubh Shrimali won first place for researching “The influence of starch in amine adsorption by quartz in the reverse flotation of iron ore.” Venkata Atluri received second for studying “The effect of polysaccharides on bubble attachment at talc surfaces.” Jennifer Galvin placed third for investigating “A novel approach to alkali pug bake for the extraction of rare earth elements from monazite concentrate.” In the fourth through seventh places were Amy Richins, Sumedh Gostu, Brett Carlson and Chris Vass.Undergraduate winnersNestor Santa earned first place for exploring “Copper recovery from waste printed circuit boards.” Cassidy O’Connell received second place for conducting “Performance analysis of CMC in high talc copper sulfide flotation systems.” Catalina Vanegas won third place for examining “Cyanidation tests and pretreatments to recover gold from a refractory ore in Colombia.” Kylie Boyce, Michael Archambo and Pritam Sinha were in the fourth through sixth places.Everyone benefits from attending the student poster competition. The students are able to display their work to future employers, and industry professionals can talk to up-and-coming engineers. Next year, there will be another competition for more posters and networking. Come and enjoy the event and the posters."

"Mercury (Hg) is toxic and has long-term effect on the muscle tissues, the brain and the central nervous system functions due to its bioaccumulation and biotransformation effect. Hg pollution around the world is high and this has attracted much global concern such as the Minamata Convention on Mercury, held in 2013. For several years, mercury has been the chemical of choice for Artisanal and Small-Scale Mining (ASM) gold extraction, accounting for about one-third of the global mercury consumption. A greater percentage of this ends up in the environment through open burning of amalgam, spillage and indiscriminate disposal of waste. To break this wall of mercury pollution, it is very important for the mercury used to be recycled through the use of mercury retort units. This brings into the limelight, the Lantern Retort which tries to synergise the high conductivity of steel and the see-through effect of glass, thus, improving the amalgamation process. A research conducted on improving the original Lantern Retort arrived at an appropriate distillation length of 5.08 cm which was used in redesigning a more efficient retort. The improved Lantern Retort recovered about 98% of the mercury used. INTRODUCTION Artisanal and Small-scale mining (ASM) is an informal mining activities which employ quite simple tools such as pickaxes, sluice boxes, shovels, chisels, metal bars, mattocks and water pumps for mining and processing of gold ores. The artisanal and small-scale mining (ASM) sector has served as source of employment for many people in developing countries including Ghana (Aryee, 2001; Hilson and Potter, 2003; Amankwah and Anim-Sackey, 2004; Amankwah et al., 2010) and has provided a substantial amount of foreign exchange through its activities (Hilson, 2001; Styles et al., 2010). Hentschel et al. in 2003 estimated that about thirteen (13) million people are said to be engaged directly in the small-scale mining activities worldwide. However, an estimated 100 million people are said to depend on this sector for their livelihood mainly in developing countries. In China alone, a projected number between 3 and 15 million people are engaged in artisanal and small-scale mining activities (Hentschel et al., 2003), whilst in Ghana, it is estimated that more than 1,000,000 people are employed directly or indirectly in the artisanal and small-scale mining activities, with 10% being women (Amankwah and Anim-Sackey, 2004; Amankwah and Ofori-Sarpong, 2014). In Ghana, ASM gold production has grown from a low of 2.2% in 1989 to a high of 34% in 2014. This figure is estimated to increase with proper documentation. This indicates that the sector has made significant socioeconomic impact on many individuals and communities as a whole. Notwithstanding the above positive contributions, the sector has also contributed to negative impacts on human, aquatic life and the environment in general due to indiscriminate mercury emission. This ‘pollution wall’ needs to be broken, and several interventions have been put in place including the use of retort units like the lantern retort (Adjei et al., 2014; Amankwah and Ofori-Sarpong, 2014)."

Infrared spectroscopy, employing the internal reflection method in conjunction with solvent extraction techniques, was used to study surface reactions between aqueous potassium ethyl xanthate and both sphalerite and precipitated zinc sulfide each activated with aqueous copper sulfate. It was determined that reactions occurring on the sphalerite and zinc sulfide surfaces produce the reaction products ethyl dixanthogen and cuprous ethyl xanthate, some of which are ad¬sorbed on the mineral surfaces. According to infrared spectra showing the reaction to form these compounds, the ratio of cuprous ethyl xanthate to ethyl dixanthogen adsorbed is directly related to pH of the flotation solution.

Since 1955 Gaspe Mines has produced 144 million tonnes of ore, averaging 0.87% Cu, mined from two open pits and underground workings. In 1994, four exploration drill holes discovered a buried porphyry/skarn Cu-Mo deposit at depths of between 1000 m and 1700 m below the top of Porphyry Mountain. The mineralization and alteration associated with the Porphyry mountain quartz monzonite does not outcrop. A total of 19,500 m of drilling in 12 drill holes has outlined 200 million tonnes grading 0.73% Cu and 0.08% Mo. Mineralization occurs as veins and disseminations of chalcopyrite and molybdenite. Drilling and feasibility studies continue.

The presence of elements, minerals, or chemical compounds in materials at very low concentrations is becoming a constantly increasing concern for several segments of the Industry. Some trace elements or chemical compounds may be considered as hazardous, some are simply considered as undesirable In complex processes where they could be constantly recycled and end up as the major factor of decreasing quality for some valuable products. In some other cases, the presence of a trace element or mineral may be highly desirable because of its economical value: precious metals are falling into this category, they probably were the first trace elements to draw our attention. Tremendous quantity of money is spent for analysis at the trace level, also the analytical "tool" has been considerably improved during recent years, but still the sampling aspect of the problem remains obscur for many, and because of it, large quantity of analytical efforts become meaningless. Not only the absence of sampling strategies is badly affecting the representativeness of a large majority of samples, but furthermore for the same reasons, many laboratories are failing In their endeavor to prepare reliable standard reference materials. The reason of this failure has its roots in the unability to estimate effectively the sampling characteristics of the element, mineral, or compound of interest, not to mention the unability to perform precise and accurate complete analysis, so essential for the instrumental analyst (1). In this paper a strategy to perform a better sampling operation is recommended. SELECTION OF A PROBABILISTIC APPROACH AS SOON AS PRACTICALLY POSSIBLE It Is essential to differentiate probabilistic sampling from non-probabilistic sampling. As Illustrated in Figure 1, the sampling operation Is a selection process which could be performed In two different ways: I. A probabilistic selection process according to which all elements of a lot of material to be sampled are submitted to the selection with a same probability of being selected. 2. A non-probabilistic selection process according to which all elements of a lot of material to be sampled are submitted to the selection with different probabilities of being selected.

"The construction of 6.3 km long central part of 2nd metro line in Warsaw was completed in September 2014 (7 stations - out of which three 25m deep stations - built using cut and cover method; two single-track tunnels constructed using four EPB TBMs as well as a short NATM section with soil freezing below the existing road tunnel). Central section of the 2nd metro line was opened to public after verification and testing in March 2015. Design and build tender for the extension of this line in East (three stations) and West direction (three stations) was announced with total length of running tunnels – approx. 5 km. Detailed description of a very complex geotechnical context, different construction methods, challenges encountered and solved during construction and finally lessons learnt on this interesting project are presented in the paper. DESCRITPTION OF THE PROJECT Introduction The very first concept plan of the metro system in Warsaw was designed several years after regaining independence by Poland in 1918. In 1929, following the geotechnical survey, design works begun, but the economic crisis of the 1930s stopped it. After a few years of break, in 1938 a coherent concept of the metro network was proposed to be implemented in phases over the next 35 years. In total, construction of 46 kilometers of metro, including 31 km of tunnels and 15 km on surface, was planned. Unfortunately, World War 2 made the implementation of those plans impossible. In the post-war period several metro designs were elaborated, but none except one was scheduled for implementation. Construction of the 1st, 23.1 km long, North-South line commenced in 1983 and finished in 2008 (Sieminska-Lewandowska et all. 2009). Nowadays, Warsaw covers the area of 517 km2 and, according to year 2014 statistical data, the city has much more than 1.7 million inhabitants. Only one operating metro line is not sufficient for such a populated city. Up-to-date metro plan, shown on Figure 1, includes also 30.5 km long 2nd metro line. It’s route is divided into four sections: Western Section with the length of approx. 9.2 km and 9 stations, Central Section with the length of 6.3 km and 7 stations, North-East Section with the length of 7.7 km and 6 stations, South-East Section with the length of 7.1 km and 6 stations. The construction of the central part of the 2nd metro line in Warsaw was completed in September 2014 and its operation started in March 2015. The paper focuses on challenges encountered and solved and lessons learnt during construction of the central part of the 2nd metro line in Warsaw."

The Coteau Properties Company's Freedom Mine is a surface lignite mining operation located near Beulah, North Dakota. As part of the mining process, Coteau removes and replaces thin layers of suitable plant growth material (SPGM) generally ranging in thickness between one and five feet. Historically, tractor-scrapers completed this work; however, rising tractor-scraper costs and increasing haulage distances sent Coteau in search of a lower cost method resulting in the acquisition of a backhoe/truck fleet in 1995.

Aerial photography is a recognized and integral part of the search for petroleum and for the metallic ores, but its application lags seriously; in the search for the industrial minerals This is, in all probability, a result of the relatively stringent economics of the various industrial mineral industries. The oil and mining companies (particularly the oil companies) can afford generous exploration budgets and thus can experiment with unorthodox approaches such as photogeology. The industrial mineral industry is more restricted, and up to now has relied on less sophisticated methods of exploration. The industrial minerals have been generally defined as those materials extracted from the earth that are neither metals, metallic ores, fuels, nor ground water. Any group chat must be defined in such a negative manner, by citing the things that they do not include, must in themselves be extremely diverse in character. This is truly the case for the industrial minerals; the full list of industrial minerals is incredibly long and tends to increase year by year.

Studies have been carried out with the High Pressure Roller Mill, HPRM, to produce calcium carbonate minus 10 micron. This paper presents the optimization of the specific grinding force of the HPRM system for a maximum energy utilization when limestone is ground. In addition, experimental tests of producing carbonate minerals using the HPRM as a pre-crusher are described in this paper.

Industrial usage of clays for current and new applications will continue to grow into the next century. The rate of growth will be highest in the less developed areas of the world. Transportation costs are a significant part of the delivered price, so the location of reserves and processing facilities for kaolin, bentonite, and palygorskite (attapulgite) are reviewed relative to serving these emerging markets. New value added applications will increase in the more developed areas which will require high quality raw materials, more sophisticated processing, and rigorous quality control.

In straight-talk fashion this paper sets forth fundamental differences between good project leaders and bad ones, on topics ranging from client relations, design management, and scheduling, to use of the whiteboard, and everything in between. Broadly applicable to all corners of project delivery, this paper will resonate with project leaders from around the world and help identify skills necessary to succeed in the management of underground facilities. A NOTE FROM THE AUTHORS This is a training document, and not really a “paper” per se. We have attempted to tackle some big and potentially complex topics using bite-sized paragraphs, each of which are intended to promote thoughtful introspection and dialog. So please feel free to skip around, or even set this document down while you reflect on your own personal experiences, tactics, and philosophies. We have found that providing examples of “what not to do” is oftentimes more instructive than simply listing “what to do”, hence the Good/Bad format of this document. Please note that “PM” refers loosely to anyone on the project management team not just the “Project Manager”. We also wish to preface this with the following cautionary statements: • The authors do not pretend to be the “Good PM” in all cases. In fact, we’re almost certainly the “Bad PM” for some. We aim to improve on those areas. • It has been said that “The only real training for leadership is leadership.” (Antony Jay) We all started somewhere, and nobody has 20 years of experience on day one. • Converting this text into some sort of prescriptive checklist would be a disservice to the evolution of project management. It is sometimes said that "mines are made, and not found". I rather doubt that the exploration geologist would be overly sympathetic to that statement, and, of course, like most one-liners it is only partly true. As an explorationist who has been involved in building his own company over the last ten years, and by necessity has become a financier, I can appreciate what real grains of truth are in that statement, however. Because technical people are seldom taught financing in their basic training, and because they are usually not involved in it until at quite a senior level in their careers, the whole field often acquires a certain mystique. The engineering professions have too often believed financing is the province of the accountant or financial executive and just as we in the technical world are often too quick to bristle if the latter try to tread on our domain, the opposite can just as easily be true. Unfortunately, this is another example of a compartmentalized individual, and that is one thing the successful financier cannot be.

This paper summarizes some preliminary results of the Illinois State Geological Surveys current investigation into surface subsidence resulting from coal mining in Illinois. The purpose of the study is to characterize-the vertical movements that may result from various types of underground coal mining. In general there is relatively little published information about subsidence from room-and-pillar mining as compared with longwall mining. The findings of this study, based on mining operations in a variety of geologic settings, delineate the magnitude, shape, and position of the subsidence profile. Comparisons of case histories of subsidence are based primarily on the extraction ratio and the general geometry of the mine (depth, panel width, and mining height).

In the southwest porphyry copper province, the virgin prospect with good copper mineralization cropping out has disappeared. Future discoveries will require an increasingly sophisticated arsenal of exploration techniques and concepts. One of the latter, stratigraphic analysis, is a technique which is often overlooked. A surprising number of exploration geologists still think of porphyry copper deposits as occurring wholly within intrusive bodies such as quartz monzonite or granodiorite. Disseminated copper mineralization, though genetically related to intrusive rocks, can occur within both the intrusive and the intruded rocks. At present, as much as 30% of the total copper produced from disseminated copper deposits in the Southwest originate from the intruded rocks rather than the intrusive. George M. Schwartz, in "Geology of the Porphyry Copper Deposits of Southwestern North America" points out that the host rocks at porphyry copper deposits include such diverse rock types as diabase, granite, limestone, dolomite, quartzite, skern, sericite schista, and others in addition to the more common monzonite, quartz-monzonite, and diorite porphyrys. Therefore, a porphyry copper can be defined as a disseminated copper deposit occurring either in or adjacent to a granitic-monzonitic-dioritic intrusive which can be exploited using bulk. mining techniques. The concept for a Mine Escape Vehicle (MEV) is motivated by the desire to enable personnel to evacuate a mine rapidly as the first and most desirable response to any underground emergency. Under a NIOSH contract, Raytheon UTD developed a conceptual design for a vehicle that coal miners could use to facilitate their rapid exit from an underground coal mine in the case of emergency, including fire or explosion. The vehicle requirements include the capacity to provide life support functions for a number of miners, operate in an oxygen deficient, low or no visibility atmosphere, and travel at speeds faster than miners can walk out of the mine. To develop the MEV concept, three primary tasks were identified and executed. The first task focused on developing a realistic concept of operations (CONOPS) and associated high level vehicle requirements. The second task identified and evaluated currently available equipment and technologies that could be applied to address the CONOPS. The final task developed a design concept that integrated the identified components for the five (5) MEV sub-systems to provide the foundation for future detailed engineering design and prototype construction. The resulting MEV design concept is centered upon retrofitting existing mine personnel carrier chasses with available, mine-worthy equipment capable of addressing the MEV requirements. This approach offers a practical and economic avenue to prototype development and delivery with minimum lead-time and risk. Furthermore, by integrating familiar and available equipment into the design and CONOPS, the resulting Mine Escape Vehicles should also be more readily accepted by the mining industry.

Martin County Coal Corporation operates three underground mines and two surface mines on Wolf Creek in Martin County near Inez, Ky. The original underground development was begun in March of 1970. The property being developed is leased from Pocahontas Land Corporation. The A. T. Massey Coal Company, whose offices are located in Richmond, Virginia, is the parent company and sales agent for Martin County Coal. Duke Power Company is the customer who will take all the production from the mines which ultimately are scheduled to produce 2,500,000 tons annually. The Norfolk and Western Railway Company built a 24-mile railroad into this huge reserve of low-sulfur steam coal. Four coal seams, all above drainage, are included in the lease. The Middle Coalburg and Stockton seams are being deep-mined now and it is in three mines that the diesel haulage equipment is used. Those of you who attended the AIME meeting in Birmingham last October or the Diesel Symposium in Pittsburgh in January of this year are familiar with the introduction of trackless diesel-powered haulage equipment into our Martin County mines. I made a presentation at each of those meetings which dealt with our first experience with Wagner Mining Equipment haulage units. These machines are sold exclusively by Lake Shore, Inc. whose offices are in Iron Mountain, Michigan.

The lawyer's role in underground construction, certainly for the past 20 years, has been principally that of the advocate in disputes resolution. Disputes in underground construction have been steadily increasing, making the lawyer a more prominent participant in the underground construction process. It is widely believed, however, that this is not a salutory state of affairs. It is our thesis that lawyers ought not be eliminated from the process, but rather that their role should be changed. They should function as prophylactics rather than as swords, i.e., they should be used to prevent or reduce disputes rather than, after the fact, to champion their clients' causes. a. Mr. Rubin is a partner in the New York law firm of Postner & Rubin. He has litigated and arbitrated numerous complex construction disputes. He has also participated in efforts to improve contracting practices on committees of ASCE and the National Academy of Engineering. b. Ms. Banick holds a BS in Civil Engineering from the University of Virginia and is a law student at New York Law School. She is a law clerk at Postner & Rubin.

To reduce the number of injuries resulting from fires on mobile, diesel-powered mine equipment, it is crucial to promptly suppress a fire once it is detected. The focus of this research was to determine the effectiveness of fire suppression agents. Large-scale tests were conducted using five different fire suppression systems based on: dry chemical, wet chemical, dual agent (dry and wet chemical), carbon dioxide, and water mist. Suppression nozzles were placed around the diesel engine where diesel fuel, engine motor oil, and hydraulic circulating oil spray fires were ignited. The results of this study can help mining companies and manufacturers by providing scientifically based data on the capabilities of the different fire suppression systems.
