INTRODUCTION Shotcrete can be defined as spray-applied concrete with a maximum size aggregate in excess of 9.5 mm (0.375 in.). The concept evolved from guniting, which uses smaller aggregate and generally produces concrete with poorer physical properties. The larger aggregate used in shotcrete requires less water in the mix, while offering larger bonding surfaces, thus imparting greater tensile and compressive strengths. TYPES OF MACHINES Two basic designs of shotcrete machines in general use are the wet or prehydrated zero slump and low slump type, and the dry or nozzle hydrated machines. Fig. 1 shows a typical zero-slump machine in a con¬figuration commonly used for small-volume require¬ments. The prehydrated zero-slump machine mixes exactly proportioned batches in a sealed pressurized chamber. "Slugs" of hydrated shotcrete mix and com¬pressed air are sent through a distribution hose to the nozzle where the wet mix emerges as a spray. The spray is directed onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. The low-slump machine is similar, except that a thick slurry mix of aggregate is delivered throughout the distribution hose to the nozzle. Fig. 2 shows a typical low-slump shotcrete machine used in moderate-volume applications. The nozzle-hydrated shotcrete machine accepts a premixed "dry" (4 to 6% moisture) batch of aggregate and cement. A constant feed of this mix is directed by compressed air through the distribution hose to the nozzle. At the nozzle, water for hydration is introduced into the emerging spray. The hydrated mixture is di¬rected onto the rock surface by the nozzle operator. Fig. 3 shows a typical dry-mix machine. The major difference between the two basic machine designs is the consistency of the shotcrete quality. Pre¬hydrated machines have high degrees of consistency and produce high-strength concrete, resulting from their ability to produce exact mixtures of zero or low-slump concrete within the machine. Nozzle-hydrated machines tend to produce poorer quality concrete because of the difficulty in controlling the water content at the nozzle. Water input essentially is an art. An expert system is a computer system that performs tasks that are considered by most people to require human expertise. Since their functioning relies heavily on large bodies of knowledge, they are often referred to as knowledge-based systems. These systems can contain the skill and knowledge of an individual human expert or the combined knowledge of a group of experts. The knowledge embodied in an expert system can consist of specific facts, HSHA regulations, heuristics or rules-of-thumb used by the expert, and databases. The purpose of this paper will be to introduce the participants in the ?Increase Competitiveness Thru Innovation? session to expert systems. This introduction will enable the participants to better appreciate the balance of the papers to be presented in this session. These papers will deal with specific mining problems and a proposed innovative solution. This paper will discuss such topics as problem-solving paradigms, rules of inference, knowledge representation, and the structure of expert systems.

Located near Ely, Nevada, the Robinson Mining District has produced gold since 1868 from the Ruth? porphyry copper system. Gold occurs in at least seven different deposit types, including porphyry copper ore, silica-pyrite replacements along favorable horizons, fault controlled silica bodies, intrusive breccias, stockworks in bornfels and in retrograde skarns. In all of these the primary controls localizing gold ore are structural .preparation and permeable hosts. Indicator elements associated with gold are Ag, As, Te, and to a lesser extent Sb and Tl. Pb, Zn and F are peripheral to gold or with it depending upon position within the system. The district has produced 87,000 kg (2.8 million ounces) of gold thus far. An additional 19,300 kg (620,000 ounces) of reserves are established, and well over 31,100 kg (1,000,000 ounces) of reserves are anticipated. I

The leaching behavior of copper powders recovered from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) was investigated using electrogenerated chlorine and aeration in a sulfuric acid solution with added NaCl and CuSO4. Various parameters were studied to understand the mechanism of the copper leaching. When the current density increased from 0 to 0.1 A/cm2, the temperature from 30 to 60° C, agitation speed from 100 to 400 rpm, and the size ranged from below 75 to 150 µm, the leaching ratios of copper powders increased. The leaching kinetics were analyzed using a shrinking core model: 1-(1-X)1/3 = kt, and the leaching process was chemically controlled with an activation energy of 14.7 kJ/mol due to Cl- ion catalysis. The ratios of [Cu+]/[Cu2+] at various temperatures (30, 40, 50, 60 and 70° C) showed a periodic variation with the increasing of the leaching time. The redox potentials of the leaching solution and copper leaching ratios in different conditions were measured. The result indicates that dissolved oxygen achieved the dissolution of coppers and electrogenerated chlorine can promote the dissolution of copper powders and improve the reaction rate of kinetics in the presence of oxygen.

Outokumpu Mintec started development of the pressure filter in 1991, and the first unit was delivered to Tara Mines Ltd. Ireland in 1992. The filter replaced a conventional disc filter and a thermal dryer. The replacement of the thermal dryer has improved both environmental and working conditions. The filter is currently dewatering 80,000 tons per year of lead concentrate, producing a cake with less than 6 wt % residual moisture.

The process of froth flotation as a means of upgrading the quality of coal by removing ash/pyrite and of separating selected mineral(s) from undesired gangue materials is certainly one of the most common unit engineering operations in use today. Flotation has been successfully practiced at the industrial scale for well over 50 years, and if anything, its use is increasing due to the ever decreasing feed grades of the coals and minerals being processed. Flotation, as a process, has also shown itself to be an extremely flexible process that lends itself well to a wide variety of solid/solid separations. Thus separations can involve very different particle sizes, particle densities, relative weight ratios of materials to be separated, etc., with surprisingly little modification in equipment and operating philosophy required.

Consider a typical blast at a surface gold mine in North America. For example, the low-grade area of Bench 4000 at AMAX Gold's Sleeper Mine (Winnemucca, Nevada). Bench 4000 is 20 feet high (=6m) , and blast holes are drilled and sampled on a 14 foot by 14 foot square grid (a4m x 4m). A representative blast includes between 50 and 150 holes, encompassing 15,000 to 45,000 tons of material (w14,000 to 41,000 metric tons).

It is becoming increasingly difficult to secure local aggregate resources that meet quality standards and local restrictions without conflicts with other land uses and environmental regulations. The successful integration of natural-resource information into land-use decisions is becoming increasingly important as the needs for both land and resources become more numerous, complex and urgent. Well-reasoned decisions about land-use are crucial to the Nation if infrastructure resources are to remain economically available. Provisions for uninterrupted future supplies of aggregate should be made using proper long-range planning that incorporate a multiple land-use program. That program would include identification and protection of natural resources, strategies that will permit development of resources according to future market needs and environmental considerations, and the beneficial reclamation of mined-out areas.

Although great strides have been made during the past two decades in the reduction of the severity of accidents and injuries in underground coal mining, the number of accidents resulting in disabling injuries and lost time has continued to increase. Looking ahead to the 1990s, the reduction of accidents and incidents typically found in these latter categories should be emphasized in safety training for underground coal mining. Loss control is an approach which shows promise for applications in mine safety training since loss-control strategies focus on the pre-contact stages of an incident rather than on the incident, itself. Applied to safety training, the heightened awareness of personnel to workplace hazards at the pre-contact stages should result in a reduction of accidents and injuries. This paper explains the concept of loss control and shows how it can be applied in the development of the needs assessment for miner training programs. An example, based on research conducted at the continuous-miner worksite, is provided.

An attempt was made to extract niobium oxide from ~98.5% Nb2O5 using solvent extraction processes. Nb2O5 is used as the feed material in carbothermic reduction processes aimed at producing high-homogeneity, super-conductor-grade niobium on a laboratory scale. The Nb metal used for superconductor applications requires a residual resistivity ratio (RRR) > 300, which in turn needs a stringent purity of Nb and allows impurities (substitutional and interstitial) in ppm levels only. In this paper, solvent extraction of niobium was studied under various experimental conditions, such as effect of different extractants, concentration of methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) in the organic phase and concentration of various acids. The concentrate was digested with hydrofluoric acid, with ammonium fluoride (NH4F) as a stripping agent. The extraction of niobium from low hydrofluoric- (HF-) bearing solution was found to be low. Thus, various concentrations of hydrofluoric acid and sulfuric acid, as well as hydrofluoric acid and hydrochloric acid, were investigated towards obtaining a maximum amount of niobium in the filtrate and a minimum amount of niobium in the residue. A McCabe - Thiele plot for extraction of niobium from the aqueous phase, HF-bearing solution using HCl with 85% MIBK in kerosene has been constructed to determine the O:A ratio and the number of stages of the process.

The Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center of the Mine Safety and Health Administration has developed the Mine Emergency Responsiveness Development (MERD) program to improve the reaction and response of mine personnel in mine emergency situations. The MERD program simulates problems that may be encountered in underground mine fires, underground mine explosions or surface mine accidents. Since its inception in 1982, the MERD program has been presented to MSHA, Industry, Labor and State Government Personnel. The program is extremely versatile and is easily adapted to suit various training requirements. It gives the participants the opportunity to experience some of the emotions, frustrations and successes of a mine emergency in a controlled environment without having to be involved in one. Past participants have indicated that this training has better prepared them in actual emergency situations through increased awareness and advanced preparation of plans and resources. In 1992, a Mine Simulation Laboratory, which simulates a coal mine and metal/nonmetal mine, was built to improve training for mine emergencies and prevention and fighting of mine fires. This facility has been included in the MERD Program to provide realistic and practical training for mine rescue teams and MERD participants in advanced mine emergency operations. This paper presents an overview of the MERD program.

Recent experiences within certain sectors of the international mining industry suggest an underestimation of the environmental risk associated with the design of mine waste management facilities. These experiences show that the technical and managerial challenge of responsible mine waste management is not always fully appreciated. Unfortunately, the image of the mining industry's environmental performance is negatively impacted by a relatively few number of failures. This negative view overrides the many positive contributions made by the majority of mining companies. The fact that these failures continue to occur to this day in both developed and developing countries is indeed remarkable, and indicates a degree of risk-taking approaching unacceptable levels. The design requirements for tailing storage facilities are, in many cases, more demanding than those of conventional water dams, because seepage of fluids which contain dissolved metals may pose a greater threat than the mere loss of water.

The economic application of real time computer control can be broken down into 2 broad areas of concern. The first would be in gaining the most efficient utilization of energy. The second would be in improved product quality. This paper will be primarly concerned with the first area of efficient energy utilization as that area has the greatest effect on costs and thus net profits. Most process control strategy attempt to achieve the greatest comminution with the least amount of energy thus maximizing efficiency. A more direct approach to energy control involves a total mine and mill energy management system. In most cases these systems have an ability to achieve a very short payback period with the greatest return on investment.

The Muruntau gold deposit is situated in the Kyzyl Kum Desert of Uzbekistan. It is currently being mined in the world's largest open pit gold mine with production believed to be of the order of two million ounces per annum. The open pit measures about 3.5 by 2.5 km and extends to a depth of 350m. The gold ore resource in the Muruntau deposit, including production, is about 170 million ounces of gold (Anonymous, 1996). This paper presents a summary of the deposit geology and its regional geological setting. Information used in this paper has been generated from observations made on two visits to the mine and its environs, and a review of the Russian-and English-language literature.

Adsorption of nonionic/anionic surfactant mixtures on kaolinite has been studied with sodium dodecylsulfate as the anionic surfactant and octaethyleneglycol mono-n-dodecylether as the nonionic surfactant. Synergistic interaction between these surfactant was found to cause adsorption of the nonionic surfactant with its hydrophilic chains protruding into the bulk, leading to substantial changes in wettability and dispersion characteristics of kaolinite. Similarly, hydrophobicity changes are observed also for silica particles upon adsorption of nonionic ethoxylated alcohols owing to possible changes in the orientation of the adsorbed surfactant molecules at the interface.

Electric logs and cuttings records from Zechstein 3 and 4 strata in boreholes in the British Sector of have been interpreted in the light of numerous cored boreholes through this sequence in north-east England. This interpretation shows that potash salts in the two cycles are thickest and most consistent in a belt 20 to 40 km wide parallel with and a few kilometres from the present basin margin, and are here generally similar in grade to those known onshore. The potash ores in both cycles are mainly of sylvinite in onshore areas, the layered Upper the Southern North Sea Potash of the fourth cycle being rather less variable but generally of appreciably lower average grade than the Boulby Potash of the third cycle. Potash salts in both cycles are highly variable in thickness and grade in basin centre areas where they have been grossly affected by diapirism of the thick second cycle salts.
