For most geologists and miners the term asbestos refers to a group of highly fibrous silicate minerals that readily separate into long, thin, strong fibers of sufficient flexibility to be woven; these fibers are heat resistant and chemically inert, and possess a high electric insulation and therefore are suitable for uses where incombustible, nonconductive or chemically resistant material is required. The US Mining Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) specifically refers to the naturally occurring minerals chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos as asbestos if the individual crystal fragments have the following dimensions: length-greater than 5 µm; maximum diameter-less than 5 µm; and a length to diameter ratio of 3 or greater. Since asbestos has been identified as one of the ten most carcinogenic substances (a cancer-causing agent), it has become, for many government regulatory agencies, a major issue concerning banning emissions to the environment. Very few recent issues have caused as much concern for the crushed stone industry as asbestos. Complicating the problem is the fact that several federal and state bureaus have greatly compounded the confusion because each has become involved in the asbestos dilemma. Simple solutions to a very complex problem have been proposed by these various governmental groups. In addition to governmental bungling is the fact that public interest groups have been able to use federal and state laws that have been enacted with a strong environmental bias to foment even greater complexities. Such is now the state of the asbestos problem. No con- firmed health risk has been associated with low-level exposure, namely crushed stone in an unbound form; a methodology for sampling and analyzing for asbestos has not been developed; a precise definition of what is asbestos does not exist, nor does a concensus among the various government groups as to what course of action to pursue. Pure asbestos as it is mined for commercial purposes does not exist in the properties mined by the crushed stone industry. Where the six asbestiform minerals do appear (to date we've been referring mainly to chrysotile in serpentinite formations in Maryland) the amount of the asbestiform mineral present is generally quite small. They generally appear in scattered, miniscule amounts. In the case of Rockville Crushed Stone in Montgomery county, Mary- land, the chrysotile is less than 1/2 of 1% of the rock deposit. No health risk has been identified with such minute quantities of asbestos minerals. MSHA standards for the occupational health and safety of quarry workers are being met; and there is every indication that normal background levels of asbestos, throughout the surrounding countryside, are as high or higher than levels measured on roads where the rock is used in pavement or base. The problem and the controversy lie with improper terminology on the part of so-called public interest environmental groups, aided and abetted by some governmental agencies who, to be charitable, we can best describe as uninformed. The news media frequently has fanned the issue, unintentionally we'd like to think, by quoting these misinformed authorities and not bothering to question the facts or adequately report balancing information handed to them. It is much better copy to talk about an asbestos cancer scare, than to deal with rather mundane measurements and descriptions that are hard to understand. At the heart of the issue is the improper use of the word asbestos. Instead of being confined to the geological description of the six asbestiform minerals-chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, termolite asbestos, anthophyllite asbestos, and actinolite asbestos-the word asbestos is also wrongly used, but too-frequently to identify many other minerals that happen to have elon-

Introduction In October 1983, Rio Algom Ltd. decided to develop the East Kemptville tin deposit. This decision was the result of intensive geological and metallurgical evaluation work, as well as careful studies of environmental and marketing aspects. The property is located about 54 km (34 miles) northeast of Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, near the village of East Kemptville. Geology The geological setting is a granitic intrusive at the contact with metasediment. The tin mineralization is in the form of cassiterite (SnO2), which is about 80% tin. Sulfides are associated with the deposit containing silver, copper, and zinc, which are recoverable as byproducts. The mineralization is associated with quartz veins and greisen alteration. In the center of the deposit, the zones are so close together they have the appearance of a massive or porphyry type deposit. Ore Reserves The mine plan is based on 56 Mt (62 million st) at 0.165% tin. Up to the ninth year, mill feed will average about 0.2% and lower grade material will be stockpiled. In later years, the average grade will be 0.16% tin. A 0.08% cutoff grade is planned for the entire 17 years of production. East Kemptville is a relatively low grade tin deposit, and only a combination of favorable circumstances has made it economic. • The ore body is situated at, or very close to the surface, permitting mining by open-pit methods at a very low stripping ratio. • The tin occurs in relatively large crystals that allow for good recovery by gravity techniques. • It is ideally located in a well-settled area, with all essential infrastructural requirements already in place. • The positive and cooperative response from various governmental agencies involved are encouraging. Mine Plan The mine plan incorporates an initial pit, followed by three expansions to the ultimate pit. Mining will be at 14 kt/d (15,000 stpd) and will include 9 kt (10,000 st) of ore plus 5 kt (5,500 st) of waste and low grade. After five years, the mining rate will increase to 21 kt/d (27,500 stpd). It is planned to drill vertical 165-mm (6.5-in.) blast holes on a 6-x 6-m (20- x 20-ft) pattern. Bulk slurry explosives will be used to break the rock. Loading will be with hydraulic shovels into 70 t (77 st) haulage trucks. The trucks will deliver the ore to a 13 x 20 m (42 x 65 ft) gyratory crusher, where it will be crushed to 150 mm (6 in.). Secondary and tertiary cone crushers will be used to further crush the ore to 13 mm (0.5 in.). Process Design Tin extraction technology is practically unknown in North America, but Rio Tinto Zinc, which has a 53% ownership in Rio Algom, is involved in tin production in the UK. Rio Algom has used this experience and expertise in metallurgical evaluation work and in tin-related aspects of plant design. Mineralogical and metallurgical test work have been performed, both on laboratory and pilot plant scales. Mineralogical work was done largely in the UK, the laboratory test program was carried out at the Lakefield research facility in Ontario, and pilot plant work was conducted in Australia. This program has resulted in significant improvements in recovery and concentrate grades, over best projections that could be made before this work was carried out. Concentrating Process The concentrator is being designed to process about 9 kt/d (10,000 stpd). The first step is to reduce the size of the ore to -700 µm (-24 mesh) in a rod mill/ball mill grinding circuit. The ball mill will operate in closed circuit with high capacity banana-type screens. The mining business has numerous risks: equipment availability, labor disruptions, foreign exchange rate, etc., but one of the more important risks is assessing the geology. Improving the “intelligence” of geology can and will have significant positive effect on reducing mining risk and thus enhancing operational and financial performance. The use of the advanced Radio Imaging Method (RIM-IV) on coal seams and ore bodies can create useful two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) high-resolution images that provide mining engineers with additional intelligence to better plan and improve operations. Improved operational performance will reduce costs and enable mining companies to meet market and financial commitments. For the past decade the underground coal mining industry has been moving toward “super panels” in long-wall mining, and “super sections” for room-and-pillar mining. These mining conventions employ wider faces, longer gate roads, greater room-and-pillar density, and an increased scale in the amount and complexity of mining equipment. An obvious economy of scale exists: amortization of setup investments over greater volume of coal enables mine management to reduce fixed cost per ton. Restricted by equipment considerations, face widths have currently reached about 1,100 ft. Wider longwall panels are planned, with 1,400-ft widths, but this requires an incremental step in hardware that the original equipment manufacturers will soon bring to market. However, longwall panel length has not yet reached its limits, with some panels planned up to 25,000 ft. While longwall panel length is generally dictated by reserve size and extent, practical restrictions in mine planning also include seam thickness, ventilation requirements, or restrictions involving methane drainage. Super panels have certainly enabled the industry to keep pushing the limits of productivity improvement. However, important considerations in mine planning, now and especially in the future, will be driven in large part by geological factors. While larger developments improve productivity and capture economies of scale, the fact that super panels can contain at least four times the area or coal volume means that the probability of encountering serious anomalies is at least four times greater than with the “conventional” panels. Given the increased probability of encountering anomalies, improved assessment of geology is important for super panels and super sections. Proper due diligence requires a thorough and competent evaluation of a mining property and its ore reserve. Using improved geostatistical techniques is most important, and improving the base data for the analysis is equally important. The old cliché “garbage in, garbage out” certainly applies. Also, the quality of coal reserves is (or has been) declining, so, in the future, mining will be in deeper and most likely thinner seams—and these seams appear to contain greater anomalies that threaten efficient operations. To counter the impact of reserve deterioration, the industry is moving toward greater use of geophysical tools and services. Fortunately, tools such as the Radio Imaging Method™ (RIM-IV) system have been improved and can provide the industry with enhanced 2-D and 3-D images of coal seams and ore bodies. To identify and profile the best areas of a coal reserve, geologists, engineers, and mine managers need greater intelligence in the form of RIM-IV tomographic maps of longwall panels and room-and-pillar sections. These images have enhanced the understanding of in-seam features, which in turn has improved operational plans and performance.

Introduction The US mineral industry in 1983 participated in the recovery from the recent recession. Compared with 1982, the value of raw nonfuel mineral output rose 8% to $21.2 billion. The $218 billion worth of goods processed from this crude mineral output represented a 9% increase over 1982. Even in real terms, these figures reflect growth. Demand for nonfuel mineral materials, of course, depends on the overall state of the economy, which steadily improved each quarter in 1983. Of particular importance to the mineral industry were surges in key mineral-consuming sectors such as construction and automobile manufacturing. New housing starts rose one-third, to 1.7 million units, while automakers turned out about 35% more cars (6.8 million) and 25% more trucks (2.4 million) than in 1982. These are significant increases, even considering recent trends toward smaller, lighter vehicles, and multiple-unit housing. A comeback for the mineral industry, however, is bound to proceed unevenly, particularly at the beginning. Traditionally, the industry lags behind the rest of the economy during a recovery, and some mineral products respond to overall economic improvement more quickly than others. This pattern has been repeated many times and the industry is used to it. Mineral executives know it is best to be patient and cautious during the first stages of an economic upturn. Many experts say that it may take extraordinary toughness, patience, and caution this time around. Steel Improves Raw steel production - a major indicator of both material use and mineral production - rose 14% to 77 Mt (85 million st), stimulating a 7% rise in domestic iron ore production to 39 Mt (38 million It). Still, the iron ore industry operated at less than half capacity, with most major mines remaining closed for part of the year. Iron ore imports dropped 24% to 10 Mt (11 million st), so demand was partly met by withdrawals from stocks. Despite the increase in steel production for 1983, output remained far below levels of just a few years ago. For example, 1983 production was still 29% less than in 1981. Raw steelmaking capacity actually declined about 10% during the year to 122 Mt (135 million st). The industry continued to cite steel imports, especially those from developing nations, as a major cause of domestic capacity loss. As long as steel production remains weak, steelmaking metals suffer. Domestic producers of bulk ferroalloys of chromium, manganese, and silicon operated at about one-third capacity in 1983, with six of the 19 companies involved being closed all year. The US mined no manganese or chromium, and very little nickel, although the country's only nickel mine did resume production in November. Molybdenum production, at 13.6 t (15 st), was only about one-third as much as in 1982. The major molybdenum mines, Climax and Henderson in Colorado, remained closed all year. To meet demand, molybdenum stocks were halved to 19 t (21 st). Mine shipments of tungsten, another mineral tied to steel production, dropped 30% to 1.1 kt (1,200 st) of contained metal. One of the most positive responses to the general economic recovery came from the aluminum smelting industry. By the end of the year, it was operating at about 79% capacity, compared to 59% in January. Nevertheless, the 3.3 Mt (3.64 million st) of primary aluminum produced represented only a slight increase over 1982. Total bauxite imports were about 27% below 1982 levels. Introduction In the same way that a blueprint communicates informa¬tion about a structure, a systems architecture should provide information that guides the construction and implementation of a computing system. Taking the blueprint analogy a step further, a plot plan can also show where, in the "bigger picture," a particular design fits (if in fact it does) and what a builder needs to know about the environment in which he or she will operate. In the context of business systems, a meaningful architecture should convey the following: • the primary purpose of computer-based systems rela¬tive to particular tasks or operations, • the relationship of the systems to each other and an indication of their interaction and dependencies, • the relationship of the systems relative to the organiza¬tion and its objectives, • indications of where IS/IT resources can best be allo¬cated to support the organization and • the overall context in which new systems and technolo¬gies can be assessed for both their impacts on current systems and on the organization itself. In theory, a well-designed systems architecture should allow an organization to focus its resources on those aspects of its business that matter most, thus, leveraging investments in information technology to a competitive advantage. In addition, the way that a computing systems architecture is represented should be un¬derstandable to non-IT staff, and it should be eas¬ily recognized by the people it supports. This pa¬per attempts to show that a meaningful systems model exists and that its applica¬tion to mining can achieve the desired results. The following discus¬sion is based on the au¬thors interpretation of a concept referred to as the computer integrated manu¬acturing (CIM) model, as developed by Allen-Bradley. An inherent strength of the CIM approach is that the model combines aspects of business-reporting structures with the manufacturing process itself. What results is a systems frame¬work that is aligned with relevant business processes and is, therefore, easier for non-IS/IT personnel to interpret. The successful application of the CIM model can be seen in a large number of both discrete and process-manufacturing facilities throughout the United States. This paper provides a brief overview of the CIM model and then describes how the model can be applied at a conceptual level to the mining industry. Finally, this paper proposes an extension to the CIM model that the authors believe will make it easier to understand and apply. CIM model As shown on Fig. 1, the CIM model begins with the most detailed levels of process equipment and works its way up to the highest level of consolidated financial reporting. Systems at each level are characterized by common attributes, users, time frames, etc., providing a clear picture of their interac¬tion. Further analysis of the relationships between systems and between levels provides insight into the opportunities for integration. Regardless of the industry or processes involved, the CIM model provides a framework in which the characteristics of systems and the data they manage can be predicted based on the nature of the business function they support. In general, as data moves upward from the lower rungs of the CIM model, it changes from de¬scribing the physical na¬ture of a process to describ¬ing its financial aspects (e.g., from productivity to cost). The time frame to which data applies also transitions from a very short duration, perhaps only milliseconds, to financial or regulatory reporting time frames that may span years. In a simi¬

25.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION The word "purchase" means "to obtain by paying money or its equivalent; to buy for a price." This definition is all too simple to properly describe the word "purchase." One should consider the basic objectives of purchasing-to procure the right material, of the right quality, in the right quantity, at the right time, from the right source at the right price. Here it should be noted that in purchasing it is recognized that the best quality or grade of materials may be the only grade to purchase for a specific job. However. there are other jobs where the medium, standard or poor grade of materials is the right quality, as the lesser grade will perform adequately. In some companies the purchasing department makes the decision as to the right quality, while in others this function is shared with other departments. Years ago in business the owners controlled the purchase of required materials and services by performing the task themselves. The owners obtained the type materials and services they needed and paid the price demanded. This function was performed along with all the other duties requisite to the owner of a business, namely, clerical, hiring and firing of personnel, financial management, etc. As companies grew in size, clerical duties were assigned to other personnel and the owner usually retained the purchasing authority. This same division exists today in many small companies. However, in the larger companies, the purchasing function has been assigned to a separate department. Importance of the Purchasing Function-The larger the company the greater the need for a separate department to perform the purchasing function. Today the purchasing agent for most larger progressive companies has policy-making authority. Therefore, it is reasonable for him to report to the president or vice president of his company. Studies of several hundred companies show the purchasing department head reporting to top management 87.5% of the time. This fact in itself is indicative of the importance of recognizing that effective purchasing requires a department staffed with specialists in the field of procurement with knowledge and experience sufficient to perform in today's complicated business atmosphere. In the manufacturing field it is a common axiom that usually half of the company's dollar expenditures are for materials. If a purchasing department functions properly and the right product or service is purchased and a savings accomplished, the contribution to the net profit of the company is much greater, as opposed to sale dollars, where only a small portion is carried forward to net profit. Thus, the importance of the purchasing department and the contribution it can make to the success of the company are obvious. 25.1.1-THE PURCHASING FUNCTION 1. Two integral components of the 30 CFR 48 training requirements mandated for new miners, newly employed experienced miners, and the annual refresher training of all miners are hazard recognition and prevention of accidents. In these categories, instruction shall include the recognition and avoidance of hazards present in the mine, and a review of accidents and their causes. Unlike instruction preparation for fact-based material, program development for hazard recognition places a particular challenge before safety-training specialists because they are often limited in their ability to adequately gauge the trainees' levels awareness prior to training. Further, they must also assure that the training is relevant, and it is presented in a thought-provoking manner. Computer-based instruction is particularly well suited for assisting trainers in developing hazard-recognition topics because it can be used in pre-training and post-training modes for assessment of training effectiveness, in addition to use as a presentation tool. Therefore, this paper will present a recent approach developed at Penn State to apply this technology for assessment and instruction of accident prevention through hazard recognition, with an application prepared for surface coal mines.

ISO 14000 series are voluntary international standards that address environmental management system standards, environmental auditing, environmental labeling, environmental performance evaluation, and life-cycle assessment. An environmental management system (EMS) is a facet of an organization's structure that addresses the immediate and long-term impact of a company's products, services, and processes on the environment. Many companies in the United States are taking a cautious wait-and-see approach before embracing ISO 14000. A few mining companies are reviewing the standards and using them as guidelines. The paper outlines the status, possible benefits to the mining industry, and options available to a company wanting to become involved in the ISO 14000 standards.

In processing heavy mineral sands, the low feed concentration and respective high value of the desired minerals require high capacity production and sharp classification/separation techniques to reduce the specific production costs. The allflux® separator, a new process system introduced to the heavy mineral industry, meets these criteria in an economical way. Its two-stage process, a combination of rising current and fluidized bed technology, allows the treatment of extremely high massflows in a single unit. Using concepts that have proven successful in processing concrete sands for many years, testwork in coal, iron ore, and heavy minerals looks very promising.

Within the industrial marketplace barium sulfate has an established role as a filler or extender pigment for use in a wide array of applications. The focus of this paper is to outline a number of these applications and in each one characterizes those features of barium sulfate which provide value. Following this is a discussion of the process techniques which have been used to develop value from a selected class of barite ores found in southern Missouri. It is appropriate to define some terms which may help in clarifying some concepts as presented. Use of the term barium sulfate refers broadly to the chemical compound BaSO4 Barite will generally refer to the naturally occurring barium sulfate ores and their properties. Barytes, whether bleached or not, will refer to barite ore made suitable for industrial applications.

"The paper presents dimensionless design diagrams for estimating the stand-up time of a tunnel face in saturated ground of medium-low permeability. The diagrams cover a wide range of ground parameters and apply to shallow tunnels (overburden less than two diameters). As the time-dependency of the face stability in water-bearing ground is associated with the consolidation process in the soil ahead of the tunnel face, the stand-up time is determined by means of hydraulic-mechanical coupled spatial stress analyses. The results presented are important for tunnel engineering practice, e.g. when estimating the feasibility of atmospheric interventions in the working chamber of a closed shield. INTRODUCTION The response of water-bearing medium-low permeability ground to tunnel excavation is time dependent. The time-dependency is due to a transient seepage flow process that is triggered by the excavation and develops slowly over the course of time. Experience shows that the short-term behavior the ground is more favorable than the long-term one: the deformations increase with time; the tunnel face may be stable initially and fail only after some time. The time over which the tunnel face remains stable is called the stand-up time. This paper investigates the time dependency of the tunnel face stability assuming that all time effects are due to consolidation rather than creep. This assumption is reasonable for shallow tunnels crossing water-bearing soils. In the problem under analysis, the unsupported tunnel face remains stable under the undrained conditions prevailing after excavation, but collapses before reaching the drained conditions prevailing at a steady state. The assessment of the stand-up time is important from an economical point of view for both mechanized and conventional tunneling through weak water-bearing ground, as a long stand-up time removes the need for face support or ground improvement works during standstills, thus saving time and money, while short stand-up times require hyperbaric interventions or the implementation of costly and time-consuming auxiliary measures."

While there has been continual improvement in the models for predicating deposition velocity and pipeline friction losses, the fundamental design philosophy for tailings pipelines has remained the same over the previous three or four decades: design the tailings pipeline to operate in turbulent flow without a deposit on the pipe invert for all expected process conditions. Recent improvements in the understanding of slurry pipeline flows allows for the design of pipelines operating with a deposit on the pipe invert, allowing the system to operate at moderate velocities for high flow rates, optimizing system energy requirements and maximizing pipeline wear life. Tailings pipelines are increasingly operated at higher solids concentrations where there is a greater likelihood the pipeline will operate in laminar flow due to the higher tailings slurry rheology. Historically, slurry pipelines have been operated in turbulent flow. We now know that laminar flow pipeline operation is possible as there are several operational laminar flow tailings pipelines. While our understanding of laminar flow slurry pipelines is not complete, recent research provides guidance on how to approach the design of these pipelines. New sensor technology has led to the development of an instrument that provides reliable indication of bed deposit height within a pipeline. This technology is particularly helpful in operating pipelines with a deposit and has application in better understanding the operation of laminar flow pipelines. Failure of tailings pipelines can result in consequent damage to surrounding structures and unacceptable spillage into the environment. Modern pipeline leak detection technology allows operators to better manage this risk by ensuring safe and reliable operation of tailings pipelines. This paper provides an overview of the each of the above advances in the design and operation of tailings pipelines. OPERATING TAILINGS PIPELINES WITH A DEPOSIT Tailings pipelines, and slurry pipelines in general, are typically designed to operate without a deposit on the pipeline invert. Meaning, the minimum operating velocity exceeds the turbulent deposition velocity. This approach has been adopted due to concerns regarding potential blockage of a pipeline operating with a deposit. Figure 1 shows a typical design duty envelope for a tailings delivery system as a function of solids throughput and solids concentration by mass. If the pipeline is designed to operate without a deposit at the lowest duty flow rate (4,480 m3/h), the operating velocity at the highest duty flow rate (6,590 m3/h) is about 1.5 times the deposition velocity. Considering that the pipeline wear and energy requirements are roughly proportional to the square of operating velocity, this results in an operationally inefficient system when the pipeline is operated close to the maximum design flow rate. Most systems tend to operate at maximum throughput after post-startup debottlenecking optimizations. Alternative Approach An alternate design approach is to ensure the pipeline operates without a deposit for the nominal flow rate and accept that a deposit will form when operating at lower flow rates. This results in the selection of a larger diameter pipeline, but there are significant benefits in terms of reduced energy requirements and lower pipeline wear.

"Standardization of the Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICPMS) method for gold in cyanide solutions was undertaken to provide a more sensitive method to quantify the gold content than the atomic absorption method standardized in 1994 (E1600). The gold concentration range covered is from 0.001 mg/L Au - 0.3 mg/L Au (0.00005 toz/t Au – 0.009 toz/t Au). Interlaboratory testing was carried out with the assistance of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) International on two committees to determine the within laboratory and between laboratory reproducibility. Three barren solutions from metallurgical operations were measured in triplicate to satisfy statistical requirements for Committee E1 on Analytical Chemistry of Metals, Ores and Related Materials. A synthetically prepared matrix representing the metallurgical processing solutions was used to prepare Youden pairs to satisfy the requirements of Committee D19 on Water. Results of the standardization program are presented. INTRODUCTION Analysis of process solutions for gold concentration requires accurate and sensitive analytical methods in order to manage process control and metallurgical accounting. Flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (FAAS) has been the work horse of the assay lab for this duty for decades. In 1994 the FAAS standard method was approved by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) (1). Six process solutions were collected and preserved by measuring the pH and adjusting to greater than pH 10, if necessary. Duplicate solutions were provided to eight laboratories in random order for analysis by FAAS covering the gold concentration range of 0.19 µg/mL (0.006 toz/t.) to 10.7 µg/mL (0.312 toz/t). A high precision method was used, which involved bracketing the sample with the higher and lower standards nearest to its concentration repeating readings three times and averaging the results. The optimum precision for the FAAS gold method was found to be at the 1.00 µg/mL (0.029 toz/t) and lower scope limit 0.3 µg/mL (0.009 toz/t) gold concentration. Since tailings solutions typically have concentrations below the lower scope limit, use of ICPMS was developed at Newmont USA Limited (Newmont) to assay the lower range solutions."

The Grant Town Power Plant is a nominal 80 MW (net) Waste Coal-Fired Electric Generating Plant which is located in northern West Virginia, approximately 15 miles southwest of Morgantown. The Steam Generator consists of two (2) Pyro-Power Circulating Fluidized-Bed Boilers (CFB), each rated at 400 000 lbs/hour @ 1,350 psig. Main Steam. The Turbine Generator is a single GEC Ahlstrom unit rated at 95 MW gross and 80 MW net. The Plant began commercial generation during April, 1993. The facility is owned by American Bituminous Power Partners, L.P. (AmBit), and operated by Mission Operations and Maintenance, Inc.

Serpentinite minerals are available in large quantities from asbestos mining activity. The granular or fibrous serpentite, at temperatures greater than 700°C, will recrystalize into olivine, forsterite and enstatite. These minerals have been used and studied for decades and are environmentally safe. The thermal process changes the composition and properties of the original mineral. Therefore, the substitution of the original mineral cannot simply be made and the applications for these new synthetic minerals need to be redeveloped. The two original mineral forms allow a wide range of new synthetic raw materials which can be adjusted to specific applications or custom needs.

A comparison study was conducted between an actual physical model and a numerical model based on the physical model of the block cave mining method. Results from the numerical analyses closely simulated the blocky behavior of the physical models, including bridging and interlocking of the simulated orebody during draw. The draw-down patterns and the rate of draw developed during numerical modeling also closely simulated the physical models. An unexpected result from the numerical modeling was the development of a zone of downward deflection which preceded the development of the zone of material movement.

According to a 2000 NIOSH report, about 100 million rock anchors are installed annually in coal mines in the USA. Most coal mines have conditions that are conducive to corrosion of the rock anchor and ancillaries (such as plates), yet the effect of this on the performance of the anchors has not been adequately researched and its effects are not understood or quantified in the USA. There is considerable research into corrosion in civil engineering applications on surface and underground but the corrosion of coal mine rock anchors is not necessarily the same because: ? In underground civil structures, water ingress is usually stopped as part of the construction process. ? Many rock bolts in mines are only partially resin grouted leaving part of the reinforcing member exposed to corrosive conditions. All cable bolts in coal mines are only partially resin grouted. ? Even when mine bolts are fully grouted, shrinkage cracks occur and the rock stresses can change due to adjacent mining that can cause the resin column around the bolt to fracture further under external shear or tensile stresses. Most coal mines therefore have ideal conditions for bolt corrosion.
