There are no particular nor unique features of iron mining that are not shared in some degree by all mining ventures everywhere. There are, however, at least three problems that have acquired a special emphasis from a unique cause. That cause is the embarrassment of riches under which the industry is suffering. The most obvious' feature of iron mining today is the copious abundance of usable ore and its almost universal distribution over the face of the earth. By the term "usable ore" is meant ore that is amenable to reduction by the usual and conventional processes. Amidst this plenty, three problems become acutely emphasized: 1. The geographic location that will provide a mine with the best market opportunity. 2. The size of the orebody that will be required to' return the preproduction investment. 3. The geometry and configuration of the orebody that will permit quality control measures to be effectively executed.

Dewatering is a major operational cost at sane mines. Under certain conditions, costs associated with water disposal may continue beyond the productive life of the mine. For mines with mineralized waters, this is of special concern. Since 1974 experience has been gained from the examination of a number of closed underground metal mines that exhibited drainage problems. It was observed in certain cases, that had appropriate steps been taken prior to closure, that the resulting drainage problems could have been largely avoided. The pre-closure steps would have involved alteration to the "plumbing system" of the mines: i.e., the drifts and crosscuts interconnecting the workings of the mine. This could have best been accomplished by the placement of bulkheads and/or selective drifting. In addition to reconfirming that hindsight is 20-20, a lesson learned from these case studies shows that a relatively simple hydrologic evaluation prior to mine closure may avoid a troublesome and costly drainage problem.

Good morning, it is truly an honor to have been invited to speak before you today Before I begin my update on MSHA's activities, I?d Like t o quickly say a few words about the American mining congress and its mission in Washington, AMC is a national trade association representing most of the producers of the nation's metals, nonmetals and coal, we also represent the manufacturers of mining equipment and supplies and the financial and consulting institutions which service the mining industry. It is the diversity of our representation which gives us our greatest strength in our petitioning efforts, the administration and the members of congress know that an AMC position is the result of the careful consideration of a vastly diverse group of mining concerns. Our president, Al Overton, perhaps has the best description of AMC when he speaks of us as "the mining industry's eyes and ears and its collective voice in Washington."

The interface between precious metal miners and gold refiners has been an uneasy interface over the years. The reasons for this interface and its apparent uneasiness and lack of trust include technical factors, economies of scale, and cultural differences. Technical factors take two forms. First, concentrates, precipitates and sponge produced at the mine site are notoriously difficult to sample and a non-representative sample can be the cause of misunderstanding and distrust. Dore, however, is homogeneous and can be correctly sampled and analyzed. Second, the technology and chemistry of fine gold and silver production is complex and quite different from that of dore production. Most mining companies are content not to be involved with additional processing steps.

Renewed interest in the vast reserves of anthracite coal in eastern Pennsylvania led to the use of a numerical model for simulating the hydrologic effects of constructing an open-pit anthracite mine. The proposed mine would be approximately 1800-m (5900-ft) long, 1000-m (3300-ft) wide, and 300-m (1000-ft) deep. A two-dimensional, finite-difference, ground-water flow model was used to calculate ground-water seepage rates into the proposed mine, to evaluate the effectiveness of various deep-well dewatering systems, to calculate drawdown in adjacent wells and properties, and to estimate the capacity of the water-treatment plant. Site-specific values of pertinent hydrogeologic parameters were used in the simulations.

The adsorption of gold onto activated carbon in iodide solutions has been studied. The adsorption rates were determined as a function of temperature, salt concentration and pH as well as activated carbon concentration. A kinetic model was also developed for the adsorption. The adsorption rate was believed to be controlled by a mixed mechanism of film diffusion and pore diffusion, but the film diffusion had a major contribution to the overall rate. Experimental findings were in good agreement with the model developed. The apparent activation energy was found to be 14.9 kJ/mol.

According to Darcy?s law, the rate of filtration should increase with increasing pressure drop across a filter cake. In centrifugal filtration, the driving pressure is created by the centrifugal forces applied in the free water on the surface of a filter cake. However, the pressure drop can become negative when the free water surface disappears, which makes it difficult to achieve low cake moistures. In hyperbaric centrifugal filtration, this problem is overcome using air pressure to restore the pressure differential. In the present work, various mineral and coal fines have been subjected to hyperbaric centrifugal filtration tests. The laboratory tests show that the moistures of various mineral fines, such as copper and zinc concentrates, phosphate, talc, kaolin clay, and precipitated calcium carbonate, can be reduced substantially below that achieved by conventional centrifuges. Similar promising results have also been obtained with various coal fines in laboratory and pilot-scale test programs and in full-scale plant demonstrations.

The paper discusses the background and theories of the conditions that led to the settlement of a Lovat TBM mining in an earth pressure balance mode on a recent project in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The settlement occurred independent of human error and caused the cost of the project to increase 50 percent. The project was mined in the highly congested downtown area in alluvial and estuarine deposits, 7.6 m below the water table with a prescribed contract requirement that precluded dewatering in deference to concern for foundations of adjacent existing buildings.

The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) has been conducting research related to unconventional gas wells positioned in abutment pillars associated with active longwall mining in Southwestern PA. The Ventilation and Explosion Prevention Team at NIOSH is working toward predicting and characterizing a hypothetical casing breach and its effect on the safety and health of mine workers, gas well workers, and the general public. An important aspect of this research is to distinguish coalbed gas from shale gas in the mine environment as an indicator of a casing breach. Another noncoal gas source exists in the region in the form of underground gas storage fields which also have the potential to migrate towards mine workings. During a potential gas breach, the addition of excess natural gas to coal mine environments will exceed the anticipated ventilation loading and can create a mine explosion hazard. A methodology has been developed to distinguish these gas sources. Gas samples from the three sources were analyzed by gas chromatography, and interpretive methods were applied to distinguish the populations graphically and statistically. Bivariate plots using the hydrocarbon index and the normalized molecular ratios showed that the sources occupy different regions of the graphs. All samples of non-coal gas contained under 2% CO2, and all coal samples included greater than this amount. A multivariate T-squared (T2) test analysis relating comparing data in pairs showed a low p-value (dimensionality parameter) and a high T2 test statistic for all comparisons, indicating that these sources are different and distinct gas populations. Ultimately, stakeholders from the mining and gas production industries can utilize this method to identify gas sources and a potential casing breach.

A new flotation collector, benzyl arsonic acid, was used for the flotation of ilmenite. ESCA, Auger spectroscopy, and chemical analysis were used to investigate the correlation between the variation in surface constituents and the flotation recovery of ilmenite. Experiments indicated that, as the ratio of surface Ti ions/surface Fe ions increases, flotation recovery increases. pH regulation with an inorganic acid was found to be effective in changing the ratio of surface ions, and, hence, the flotation recovery.

The Homestake Mining Company at Lead, South Dakota is one of the few remaining gold properties still in operation, in this country. The mine is relatively deep, with a bottom production level of 4250 feet, and a bottom development of 6200 feet. 4, 800 tons of ore are produced daily from three rather large, but inconsistent ore bodies; the dip of which is easterly at about 72 degrees, and the plunge to the south is about 30 degrees. The ore is, for the most part, a chlorite schist with large veins of secondary quartz and cummingtonite schist The ore is not continuous in any direction, but is localized at the ridges of the very intricate system of anti clinal folds. This property has been in active production since its establishment in 1876, except for a period during World War II. The incentive, or contract pay system, has been a gradual process that has been developed by the trial-and-error method down through the years. In looking over the old records, hand-shoveling was paid on an incentive basis as far back as 1916. Since this time, the contract system has grown until it now includes almost all types of underground work - except haulage and maintenance work

It is very seldom that a completely new project is initiated. Most projects consist of a new and different combination of proven techniques or a combination of proven and new techniques. The theme of my discussion today falls in the second category. Proven methods of water transportation and proven methods of bulk material handling were combined with some new techniques which resulted in a new market for the coal industry and a cheaper fuel supply for the power industry. In this respect I refer to the water transportation of coal from the West Kentucky coal fields to coal burning power plants on the west coast of Florida. Peabody Coal Company, Florida Power Company, Gulf Coast Transit, and Mid-South Towing combined their individual requirements and "know how' to make this project possible. I feel the results speak for themselves since it proves that coal can be mined in the West Kentucky coal fields, transported some 1,200 miles by river barge and some 450 miles by ocean going barges, be delivered to power plants on the west coast of Florida and still meet the competitive prices of gas and residual oil. The unique parts of this project concerns the storage and trans loading facilities for coal from river equipment to ocean equipment near New Orleans; the return haul of phosphate and it's trans loading from ocean to river equipment at the same facility and the use of large ocean going barges. In detail it works as follows: Coal is mined in West Kentucky and loaded into 1,500 ton river barges on the Green River. It is then transported some 100 miles to the mouth of the Green on the Ohio River, then 200 miles down the Ohio to it's convergence with the Mississippi, and then 900 miles down the Mississippi to the trans loading facility some 40 miles South of New Orleans. There it is transferred from the 1,500 ton river barges to 18,000 ton ocean going barges and hauled some 450 miles across the Gulf of Mexico to the Gannon Station of Tampa Electric at Tampa entailing a total haul of approximately 1,650 miles.

Talc is an important industrial commodity due to its wide-ranging intrinsic properties; however, the presence of iron oxide hinders its industrial utilization. Herein, we report the purification of Pakistani talc through acid leaching assisted by chlorination techniques. Among various acids (i.e., HF, HCl, H2SO4, HNO3, H3PO4, Aqua Regia, H3BO3, and CH3COOH), HF was the most effectual, removing up to 67% of iron oxide at optimized conditions of temperature, 90–95 °C; time, 120 min; HF concentration of 5%; and at a pH of 1. In the second step, chlorination of the talc sample was performed separately by both wet chlorination and dry chlorination. Wet chlorination was carried out using KMnO4 and HCl in slurry phase which shown about 52% removal of iron oxide, whereas dry chlorination with CaCl2 at high temperature attained about 48% removal of iron oxide from talc sample. Further, the wet chlorination of HF leached samples was also performed under optimized conditions which showed up to 87% iron oxide removal. The original and treated talc samples were characterized by EDX and XRD analysis to monitor the changes in the elemental and mineralogical composition of the talc. It can be concluded that HF leaching followed by wet chlorination is an effective method for the upgradation of low-grade Pakistani talc ores.

INTRODUCTION The finding or acquisition of ore bodies containing 200,000 opt gold and greater is becoming more difficult. There are more investors and small heap leach operators who have or can raise the capital to make the investments in the large ore bodies. Echo Bay Mines' approach has been to regionally develop small ore bodies, two or three in the same geographic location, which when considered together contain over 200,000 opt gold. CONCEPT The "world class" ore body syndrome, which many large gold producing companies maintain, can restrict company growth if the finding or acquisition of these large ore bodies is not forthcoming. Another approach has been taken by Echo Bay Mines. The concept is to regionally develop two or three small ore bodies suitable for processing with portable equipment. The systematic scheduling of mining, processing with a single flexible processing plant using the same management/ operator team can reduce your overall investment. The initial selection of mining and crushing equipment suitable for sun11 open pit operations is essential. A very viable option in the mining sequence is to use contract mining/crushing/screening/agglomerating and stacking. This option also lowers your initial capital investment and increases the flexibility in mining as you move from one mining operation to another. LOCATION AND SEQUENCING One single small ore body of itself is not attractive enough for the large producer. The recovery of the initial capital investment, although very rapid, does not make a viable project. The only alternative is to find two or more small ore bodies close enough geographically to each other so that the same management/operator team can be used to run the operations as each is put into operation. Echo Bay Mines has regionally located several ore bodies ranging in recoverable ounces up to 100,000 oz. These small separate ore bodies, located within a 30-mile radius of each other, for planning purposes have been considered as one single ore body. The first small ore body has the initial burden to recover the capital invested in the office, laboratory, power plant and processing plant. Other capital investments such as water supply, access and haul road, fencing, septic system, pads and ponds are reoccurring at each mine site. The first small ore body must recover the initial capital investment in the movable structures as well as the reoccurring capital investment in the fixed structures very rapidly. A total capital recovery time of 6 to 9 months should be used as an economic decision point for both choosing which small ore body should be processed first, and what the plant design capability should be. The sequencing of the small mines is very critical. All the fixed structures mentioned above must be installed at the second mine site before the first mine has been mined out. The ideal sequencing will allow for only one month between shutdown of the first small mine and production from the second. SPECIFIC OPERATION Echo Bay Mines has completed the construction of the Illipah Mine located in White Pine County, Nevada, with this small mine sequence approach. The Illipah Mine is a 40,000 ounce recoverable gold ore body. This ore body met all the necessary requirements. This paper examines two comminution circuits on a hypo­thetical gold ore deposit with both small-scale (1,000 short tons per day) and large-scale (35,000 short tons per day) production rates. The most appropriate circuit is dependent on the highest economic performance with a combination of crushing and grinding equipment to achieve the desired product size. The selected circuit is dependent on costs associated with project cri­teria, equipment selection and ore characteristics. Factors influ­encing the selection of the comminution circuit require system­atic evaluation to optimize plant performance and maximize eco­nomic return. The small-scale circuit economics responded best to three-stage crushing followed by a single-stage ball mill. The large-scale plant favors a primary crusher followed by SAG milling and ball milling. The conclusions from this paper indi­cate that each project must be evaluated separately to determine the most economic means of reducing the size of the ore.

In this paper, the performance of the Knelson Concentrator and of the batch and continuous Falcon Concentrators are compared. The units are based on different operating principles, and perform quite differently. The Knelson yields very high free gold recoveries over a wide size range of both the recovered and rejected species. It is less effective in recovering very fine (<15 μm) or very flaky gold, as encountered in flotation feeds, concentrates or tails. It is the preferred unit for gold recovery from grinding circuits. The batch Falcon is effective in the fine range, typically less than 37 μm for gold. Its recovery zone is quickly saturated when there is significant heavies in the feed. It works best as a pre-concentration unit, or when sulphide content is low. The continuous Falcon is a versatile unit which is capable of recovering fine heavies (density down to 5 g/cm 3), especially from coarser gangue.

The topic I would like to throw out for discussion this morning concerns the metallurgical solution management of operating a valley fill leach facility where ore depths approach 250 feet and deeper. We are currently beginning to experience solution transport times through our heaps on the order of 60 to 70 days as our heaps approach 250 feet. Incorporating a two-stage leach scenario, or solution enrichment, these times are nearly doubled. Concurrent with the increased solution transport times, the solution tenors being produced by our heaps are being diluted slightly as percolation occurs through the lower lifts. I feel the best way to handle these situations is to closely monitor solution application rates, and carefully manage ore stacking. Also, as heaps become deeper, metallurgical and hydrologic characteristics of the ore become inter-related, i.e. if channeling or preferential flow is taking place, lowering cross-sectional flow rates to older leach panels with help re­institute capillary flow while helping to prevent solution tenor dilution.

The present contribution examines the main components of a sustainable land reclamation program applicable to surface coal mines and the environmental threats that hinder the transition to sustainable land management. It compares the main ?waste streams? that cause adverse impacts to the environment with the so-called ?best available technologies and managing practices? that are proposed by organisations with high expertise in land management. Also, it addresses the environmental and socio-economic indicators that should be monitored in order to assess the results of the land management program and to allow remedial actions and continuous improvement. Based on the Greek lignite mines experience in land reclamation, this paper presents the common weaknesses of the land management programmes and proposes an improved communication scheme that moves things towards sustainability. This scheme is based on a more rational exploitation of the available economic resources and a constructive dialog between the mining companies, the local authorities, the state institutions and other stakeholders.

Mining has traditionally been seen as a relatively risky business. Exploration is expensive and the failure rate is high, while start-up costs commonly run to many hundreds of million dollars. To justify the risk and expense, the returns from successful projects must also be high. Accurate estimation of mineral resources and reserves is fundamental to the processes of optimising returns and managing risk in mining developments. Systematic development from initial exploration through a series of development stages enables expenditure and risk to be balanced. As a consequence, large scale modern mine are more akin to manufacturing businesses. This paper examines the life history of a mineral reserve estimate from the perspective of a large mining company against a background of modern estimation and reporting requirements. It will also touch on what constitutes, in the author&apos;s opinion, `best&apos; practice in reserve estimation, and how this concept can be spread more widely. This work describes the effect of the degree of energy transferred to the pulp, during the conditioning stage, on gold flotation fines recovery, grade and kinetics, with three types of frother (Dowfroth 250, pine oil and MIBC) and amyl xanthate as collector. Best results show an increase in 24% recovery and 50% in concentrate grade, depending on the intensity of conditioning and type of frother (better with Dowfroth 250). For low or intermediate energies (0.5-1.5 kWhlm3 pulp), the fine particles adhere to larger ones, increasing the recovery due to a mixture of carrier (pyrite, in this case) and autogeneous carrier flotation and at higher shear (2-3 kWhlm3 pulp), gold fine particles aggregate themselves. These phenomena are demonstrated by measurements of flotation rate, true flotation (flotation by actual particle-bubble adhesion), and by the amount of entrained particles. Alternatives for this type of pulp conditioning and mechanisms involved are discussed.
